‘American Idol’ winner gets stage legs on tour of ‘Heaven I Need a Hug’

The winner of the second installment of Fox’s top-rated “American Idol” comes to Milwaukee this weekend to prove that he’s more than just a singer.

Ruben Studdard stars with Robin Givens in “Heaven I Need a Hug,” on Saturday and Sunday at the Riverside Theater.

“I try to keep myself as busy as I can, because, you know, you have to work while you’re young,” says the 29-year-old Studdard.

This play is preparation for the 30th anniversary revival of “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” he’ll be doing next year.

“I just wanted to get the opportunity to get some legs, some stage legs, under me,” he says of this theatrical endeavor……

Daughtry gets all the basics right

The former ‘Idol’s’ performance has appealing if generic songs, a strong voice, singalongs, and a tinge of dark mystique.

Ben and Sophie Ulene had trouble elaborating on what drew them to the Daughtry concert Monday at the Orpheum Theatre.

“I liked him on ‘American Idol,’ ” was all Ben came up with beforehand, referring to singer Chris Daughtry, the 2006 “Idol” fourth-place finisher who fronts the quintet bearing his name. The group has this year’s biggest-selling album and, as of Sunday, three American Music Awards. Beyond that, Ben only shrugged………

Kelly Clarkson breaks away from expectations

It may seem odd to start with the very last song Kelly Clarkson sang at the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday but in considering that tune you come to appreciate both where she’s been and where she’s going.

“Since U Been Gone” is the Kelly Clarkson song that practically everyone knows, a near-perfect single with just enough crunch to feel like rock, and a chorus so irresistible that it’s impossible not to sing along……

Daughtry Looks Gift Idol In The Mouth?

John Mayer gives AI alumni props

I present to you my 5 favorite tracks of RIGHT NOW.
They’re great. Not “actually” great, as in “I expected them to suck and I’m reluctantly giving it up” great. Just stand-out pop music of today.

Tattoo – Jordin Sparks – I don’t really know who Jordin Sparks is as an artist, but the song is great. All people want is a melody and some words they believe are actually coming from the heart of the singer, and even though I’m sure it’s not self-penned, I buy it. It gets me. Mission accomplished.

Over You – Daughtry – AMA well deserved. High five.

One of the other songs that John Mayer lists by Sara Barieilles “Love Song” is one of my new favorite songs. Just downloaded it the other day- LOVE it!

    “DARK MYSTIQUE?!?”

I’ll come back and write more in a few hours, when I’ve picked myself up from where I fell down laughing.

MSNBC likes to attack Fox networks/talent and misrepresented him. He said:

While he thanked the English creator of the “Idol” format, Simon Fuller, Daughtry noted that he was an artist before he entered the show.

“The show didn’t make me who I am. It just gave me an opportunity to show everybody else who I was,” he told reporters backstage

  • Lu

I guess I see it differently. I think the show DID make him who he is. It’s all a matter of interpretation. Fact is no one would no who any of these people are without idol. Even with the full quote, I dont agree with the comment. JMO

  • Kirsten

MSNBC likes to attack Fox networks/talent and misrepresented him.

LOL. I think that MSNBC has bigger fish to fry than Fox “talent”. Heck, they would have more affect by smearing a politician or some other country or the new Wiggle. I’ve seen lots of positive press on MSNBC about Fox network shows (they do a nice recap of House every week and their weekly reviews of AI are quite fun to read), so I don’t think they have sacrificed their journalistic integrity just to satisfy their irrational hatred of all things Fox.

Besides. Everybody gets taken out of context sooner or later. That’s why you have to watch out for the soundbite. Just wait until the ladies of The View call Chris “ungrateful”.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The show didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t make me who I am. It just gave me an opportunity to show everybody else who I was,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he told reporters backstage

I’m confused. I thought Daughtry was a band consisting of 5 people. Didn’t they all win those AMA awards? Or is Chris suddenly a solo artist? Did he play all those instruments on the album too? Write everything? I bet he even produced the album and even designed the cover (he used the camera timer to take his own photo…the blurs are him running from spot to spot).

See, hear and decide for yourself

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I think what Chris means was that the show didn’t dictate the style of music or the type of artist he was going to be. I believe him. I believe that he was a derivative, paint-by-numbers rawker before Idol, and he’s much the same now. Unquestionably talented, but not particularly creative.

  • Ladybug

I understand what Chris was trying to say, but probably could have phrased it better. He should have just left off that “make me who I am part” and it would have sounded appropriately grateful.

Enlighten me a bit, and not to diss Mr. Daughtry accomplishments, but what did the band who went on stage with him actually have to do with that recording? My feeling is, he should have walked onstage by himself and then thanked all those who actually recorded that album with him and given props to the current band that tours with him performing those songs.

  • BlooregardQKazoo

I think the show DID make him who he is.

He’s saying he’s the same guy and playing the same type of music he did before AI. The show didn’t transform who he was as an artist although it gave him a professional career, money, etc. He wasn’t an indie rocker or metal guy who went Nickleback to make it according to Clive’s plan post idol. He subscribed to that Live type sound beforehand. Plus the quote shows him thanking the show and fans for the opportunity to pursue his dream.

LOL. I think that MSNBC has bigger fish to fry than Fox à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“talentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

They have a history of attacking AI and 24 b/c those shows make Fox a juggernaut. All AI season long they’ll promote any crackpot who believes the show is rigged and never question the lack of any credible evidence or will milk every Antonella or Corey Clark scandal
more than even the tabloids. Yet you never see Fox rip NBC’s star show Heroes when its down. Those shows make Fox extremely profitable and NBC would like to destroy them. That’s a business reality.

‘Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m confused. I thought Daughtry was a band consisting of 5 people. Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t they all win those AMA awards? Or is Chris suddenly a solo artist? Boy you Taylor fans are never gonna get over Chris’s success. If you love Taylor’s music, Chris’s triumphs shouldn’t interfere w/ your enjoyment of it or prompt you to belittle Daughtry. Taylor doesn’t care and isn’t badmouthing Chris for going 3x platinum and such. He has a life and is happy.

I was only stating an opinion and how I interpretted the quote. Incidentally, I’m not a “Taylor fan” and I do have Daughtry’s cd AND I like it. I was merely making an observation and was not badmouthing or belittling anybody. Sometimes it appears to me that some of the former idol contestants forget where they came from and this, to me, appeared to be one of those times.

“Enlighten me a bit, and not to diss Mr. Daughtry accomplishments, but what did the band who went on stage with him actually have to do with that recording? ”

IMO, while the current band members (except Chris, of course) didn’t record the album – because of time constraints of putting a band together post-Idol – all five band members have been busting their butts touring non-stop all year promoting this album. It would be a slap in the face for only Chris to accept the awards, because without the touring and promotion that these guys have been doing, the album would not have been as successful. The entire band should enjoy the awards that it reaps.

So, if I don’t buy into the conspiracy theory that MSNBC is out to destroy Daughtry, I’m a loon? I guess I should go alert the real news agencies that MSNBC has a smoke-filled back-room where they cook up stories to make Fox look bad. I bet they had something to do with Keifer Sutherland getting arrested for drunk driving. Anything to destroy the competition.

MSNBC isn’t the best news agency in the world and they can get a little tabloidy, but I doubt they have any special vendetta against anybody. Otherwise, they wouldn’t give any favourable press to Fox shows and they do.

Seriously, if I was a half-crazed Taylor fan, shouldn’t I be helping to beat the MSNBC-is-a-FOX-hating-journalistic-sleazeball-organization drum since they’ve printed their share of unfavourable comments about Taylor (including being the ones that ripped the “Taylor is a Diva” comment out of the Tabloids and putting it into the mainstream press)? The press will run with any sound-bite that is juicy. They don’t care what show you are on.

Everything doesn’t have to be a fan war. Sometimes somebody calls “bogus” on a conspiracy theory just because they don’t buy it.

As for the “is Daughtry a solo artist or not” thing, I think he should just pick a story and stick with it. I know that the vast majority of the accomplishments of Daughtry are due to Chris’s talent, but if he wants to be a band, he has to share the glory. Plus, the journalists love that Bull Durham carp and will tear you apart like wolves if you deviate from the script (which we have just witnessed with that “quote out of context”).

  • jpfan

Prediction: this story goes nowhere. Since Chris had the good fortune to get the shocking boot, he can be more ungrateful.Plus he’s correct. He has been the same rawker dude from the beginning and didn’t really change much while on the show. The hint of arrogance only helps the rocker image. So, it’s all win, win IMO.

  • poporange

I do appreciate your perspective on this, and agree. The only caveat I might add would be a question of authenticity. This band did not record the album. Chris Daughtry did with other musicians. (And all, I might add, quite talented). I think when awards are given for the MUSIC (not the artist), then a little honesty is in order.

I fully appreciate the band Daughtry’s contributions to the success of the album “Daughtry.” Not knocking that at all.

    Winner Daughtry’s party problem

Singer Chris Daughtry apparently had trouble getting into a party
Though he was one of the big winners at Sunday night’s American Music Awards, Chris Daughtry had trouble getting in to the show’s swanky after-party, according to reports.

People.com says the former American Idol star and his entourage were denied entry to the VIP bash which was being held on the top of a parking structure in downtown Los Angeles.

Luckily, the awards host Jimmy Kimmel came to Daughtry’s aid, having a word with security to help the star get in.

    ‘PATHETIC’ LA MUSIC BASH

THE American Music Awards at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles Sunday night were a fiasco – and not just because someone had the dumb idea to have Beyoncà © sing her hit “Irreplaceable” with country band Sugarland. The after-party in the adjacent parking lot was “a total mess,” our spies said. One music industry insider who has gone to many award shows and after-parties said, “The door was being run by a woman who was nuts – she didn’t know anyone and would literally ask people like Chris Brown, ‘What do you want?’ when they approached her and her many security guards. She wouldn’t let Chris’ friends in and refused entry to Fergie’s manager. There were also problems with Will.i.am, but the sad thing was that, when you finally made it past that door beast, there was no one in there – just Chris Daughtry. It was pathetic.” A rep for the AMAs didn’t return our calls.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

But the articles ARE ridiculing him, so Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure what your point is.

These are two articles that will very likely not go any further. Remember the “Taylor is a diva because he wants to go to the bathroom by himself” story? THAT one eventually wound up on almost every entertainment blog, on more than a few local newspaper websites, AND on MSNBC.com. There were others. Meanwhile, while I’ve seen the occasional negative story about Chris here and there, I’ve never, ever seen a negative story about Chris take on a life of its own. If you can point me to an example that proves me wrong, I will happily eat my words. I mean, seriously, and I realize that this is just the way the media works and I’m not exposing some big conspiracy theory here, but if it had been Taylor who had been turned away at the party, or Taylor who had been used as an example of why a party was considered “pathetic,” it’d be in more places than two small articles. And it’s not a comment on their respective talent. It’s a comment on how the media targets certain people. It fascinates me.

    That’s the difference, IMO.

Look, I’m not trying to be a conspiracy theorist and in no way am I suggesting that Chris DESERVES negative press. I just think it’s an interesting commentary on how the media creates superstardom when, apparently, Daughtry isn’t considered a superstar within his own circle (meaning musicians). And I think it’s interesting how the media designates winners and losers. I’m not being bitter, but at the same time, I don’t really feel like I’m pointing out anything shocking. It all just amuses me.

I mean, seriously, and I realize that this is just the way the media works and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not exposing some big conspiracy theory here, but if it had been Taylor who had been turned away at the party, or Taylor who had been used as an example of why a party was considered à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“pathetic,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be in more places than two small articles.

Actually, I think Taylor would be lucky to be written up at all at this point.

But really, I think it was just a short period of time, and maybe 2 stories that got blown out of proportion, and I think that was because Taylor won AI, so that made him a flash point and it got worse when it was clear that he was an underperformer by Idol standards.

Daughtry is at a high point of his own, personal media cycle. If he sells fewer records next time out, or bombs on tour, the backlash will arrive.

  • Lu

But the articles ARE ridiculing him. So, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure what the difference is.

    Yep – they sure are.

    From Hits Daily Double:

    Jostling for top debut will be Jive/ZLGà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Idol-winning Jordin Sparks (125k-150k)

That’s kind of where I thought she’d be.

  • ealbino

Holy moly.. I really thought Jordin would do better numbers than this prediction..

Jostling for top debut will be Jive/ZLGà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Idol-winning Jordin Sparks (125k-150k) and Capitolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Mr. Kidman, unh, Keith Urban, with a greatest hits collection (125k).

  • jpfan

Of course, that’s a prediction. She could go higher/lower but they’re usually in the ballpark.

  • ealbino

Really jpfan? With a song almost in the top 10 in the country I thought for sure she’d do over 200k. Oh well, shows you what I know. I still can’t figure out why Kimberly Locke doesn’t sell when she’s had two or three AC hits..hasn’t she?

  • jpfan

Believe it or not, huge hits on the Top 40 chart doesn’t mean you’ll sell albums. Timbaland (who has five #1s) has an album that hasn’t gone platinum yet. The problem for Jordin and Blake is they don’t seem to have very big idol fanbases.

  • ealbino

jpfan..You’re right.. Look at Rhianna..I hear her every hour and she hasn’t gone platinum either..

    61 RIHANNA – GOOD GIRL GONE BAD 13,648 14,739 -7 799,878

  • Anne67

The problem for Jordin and Blake is they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem to have very big idol fanbases.

jpfan I think you are right on the money with this statement.

  • Kirsten

Look at Rhianna..I hear her every hour and she hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t gone platinum either..

Rhianna is a good example of somebody who is a single artist. She does very well on the radio and downloads, but never seems to match that success with album sales. Some say it is because she releases an album almost every year, but it may be that people just like a single or two and are happy with it.

Another Idol that had big success with a single that was not matched with album sales was Mario from season 4. He had a top 10 hit, but his album sales were very disappointing (his opening week numbers were 11,812). Some suggested that might indicate that his song was pushed by the record company, not fan interest.

Loser – seen as underperforming for Idol Winner

Given Jordin’s even poorer performance (Idol winners in the past have debuted between 239K and 416K in the past, putting Jordin 100K behind the pack to begin with), it will be interesting to see if the press eviscerates her. Given that her album was released during what is widely called “The Biggest Shopping Week” in the US (it’s usually not quite the biggest), the amount of effort gone into this release (successful single and video released prior to album) and the fact that she is the ruling AI, 125K-150K can hardly be called anything other than disappointing numbers when they are less than half that of last year’s “loser” winner.

But, sales are a marathon, not a sprint, so she could do better later and she does have the Christmas buying season to help her (she’s been quite steady on single sales). If her record label invests in a few more singles for her, she could still pull her numbers around. It will probably not be easy to hit the standard 1 million sales which are expected of Idol winners, but it’s still possible. Plus, the press might go easy on her because she is, in case you haven’t heard, only 17. (another saving grace may be that the press might be tired of talking about Idol winners that don’t do well).

  • hoodathunk

I think it’s time to reassess what is expected of Idol winners. Record sales are down across the board. Winning AI is less of a novelty now than it was the first 3 or 4 seasons.

  • Desdemona

(another saving grace may be that the press might be tired of talking about Idol winners that donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t do well).

I wish! I don’t think they’ll EVER get tired of badmouthing Taylor Hicks. And Ruben. :(

  • Lu

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s saying heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the same guy and playing the same type of music he did before AI. The show didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t transform who he was as an artist although it gave him a professional career, money, etc. He wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t an indie rocker or metal guy who went Nickleback to make it according to Cliveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plan post idol. He subscribed to that Live type sound beforehand. Plus the quote shows him thanking the show and fans for the opportunity to pursue his dream.

Right. He was a member of Christian rock band who went Nickleback – and it’s working for him. He made a really good cd but if he were the same guy playing the same music, he’d have signed with a Christian label and he wouldn’t be rolling up the top 40 music charts… again, jmo.

    Jostling for top debut will be Jive/ZLGà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Idol-winning Jordin Sparks (125k-150k)

    Ruh roh…

  • Chicago-sally

Boy, they’re still dogging Kelly. When will they give her a break? So the album didn’t sell as big as her previous CDs, but d***, whose does? Most artists have a bad CD, down sales, it’s part of the music life.
    Go Kelly!

  • xoxoyc

I still think Jordin will do okay. The thing to remember about her is that she didn’t have this phanatical voting fanbase the way most AI winners do. She did enough to stay in the game and pull out the win at the end so she isn’t going to have a huge fanbase to go out and buy her album the first week.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she comes in a little higher than HDD is predicting though- Black Friday makes things awfully unpredictable in the end.

  • chewsday

    mj,

Maybe Taylor’s name will be out there in the near future. According to the audio blog he left at thhq today, he has some gigs lined up in December. He didn’t give any specifics, though.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I think it’s very possible that Jordin’s sales will be modest in the beginning, and then grow as she gains fans amongst the general public. She could do very well in the end. Or not. :) . Time will tell.

The thing with Taylor, is that once his fanbase bought up the album, his sales were pretty much over. He just didn’t connect with the public beyond Idol-watchers.

Which in the grand scheme of things isn’t a bad thing for him. He’ll earn a nice living from his loyal fanbase, so it’s all good. Along the way, that fanbase may grow larger. It will be interesting to see what he does with his next album.

  • snuffles

I think Jordin COULD grow if her JIVE is willing to be patient and invest in her. That remains to be seen though.

If she get’s a 2nd single (with video) then it means her label really believes in her. If not, then it means they’ve written her off.

  • xoxoyc

The second single thing is not necessarily a sign of label support. Katharine got a second single as a follow up to her modestly successful first single. They shot a video and everything yet the song got no support from the label.

They may throw a second single out there and expect it to sink or swim on the merit of Jordin winning AI.

I think what the lower sales from both Taylor and now Jordin is proving that is the days of guarenteed album sales from winning AI are over. The labels are actually going to have to put out some money from promotion to get a return on investment.

  • snuffles

I heard that McPhee had to pay her own money for that music video because the label was reluctant to release another single. I could be wrong but I swear I read that somewhere.

But I agree, AI guarantees nothing. Everyone can’t be Carrie or Daughtry. But that’s the problem with major record labels these days, they don’t invest in artist development. If an artist doesn’t hit it big immediately, they get kicked to the curb in short order.

If you take Jordin out of the context of ridiculous AI expectations, those numbers are excellent for a debut artist. But AI wants another Carrie or Kelly Clarkson. Me thinks Jordin is gonna start feeling the AI freeze soon if her album doesn’t have legs.
