‘Idol’ champ eyes long-term success

Barely six months after being crowned the winner of “American Idol,” David Cook has released his self-titled debut album.

The Missouri native (no relation to the author of this article) described the recording process as “squeezing a year’s worth of work on a record into 2Â ½ months.” But he’s very happy with the result.

“It’s a very accurate definition of where I’m at, where I was and where I want to be,” he said.

Cook sticks to his rock roots on the release, eliciting help from ex-Soundgarden member Chris Cornell to write the lead single, “Light On.”

Week Ending Nov. 16, 2008: Teens On Top

For the first time in nearly a decade, teen acts hold down the top two positions on The Billboard 200. Taylor Swift, 18, opens at #1 with her sophomore album, Fearless. David Archuleta, 17, bows at #2 with his eponymous debut album. This is the first time that teen acts have held the top two spots since January 1999, when Britney Spears, then 17, bowed at #1 with her debut album, …Baby One More Time, the same week that *NSYNC peaked at #2 with its eponymous debut. Two members of that boy band were teenagers at the time: Justin Timberlake, 17, and Lance Bass, 19.

Just a Minute With: “American Idol” David Cook

LOS ANGELES (Reuters Life!) – It’s been six months since David Cook was crowned the latest “American Idol” but after a summer “Idols” group national tour, he had only six weeks to put together his debut album.

Cook, 25, who was working as a bartender while trying to break into the music business, talked to Reuters about his self-titled album, which was released this week, and his hopes for the future.

Q: How different is this first album from the David Cook we saw on “American Idol”.

David Cook Would Like To Give You A Warrant T-Shirt For Christmas

Following in the footsteps of his runner-up David Archuleta, American Idol champ David Cook has shared the contents of “his iPod” with USA Today. This is mainly worth noting because he has Warrant lead singer Jani Lane’s version of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” on there, and Lane’s version of the chestnut isn’t all that bad, actuallyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ it’s a gloomy-then-peppy cover that I will bet cash money was inspired by Joey Ramone’s version of “What A Wonderful World.” (Ramone, it should be noted, is not on Cook’s iPod, although Sevendust is. Sigh.)

Will David Cook become a Grammy darling?

If, as many music gurus say, David Cook is “American Idol’s” new rock superstar, that means he’s the new Chris Daughtry. That means David Cook could be nominated for four Grammys soon, just like Daughtry. Right?

Entertainment Weekly gives the new disc a B grade, adding, “If you’re expecting Daughtry 2: Post-Grunge Boogaloo, well . . . you’re about right. Cook is clearly built in the guy-linered mold of that earlier Idol alum, though his debut owes just as much to the expert hands that craft it, including producers Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) and Brian Howes (Hinder, Chris Cornell). They give David Cook’s clutch of bombastic verse-chorus- verse rockers an impressive melodic sheen, one well suited to Cook’s husky, expressive vocals.”

American Idol Daily: King Cook

The first day of “Idol” champion David Cook’s post-show career began with a very positive sign: His album debuted in the top position on the iTunes top albums chart à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ sweeping aside not just his Season 7 opponent David Archuleta but also the formidable marketplace powers of Taylor Swift, the “Twilight” soundtrack, Beyonce, Britney and Nickelback. Idol Nation anxiously awaits the arrival of hard numbers on both Davids’ sales with upcoming charts, but in the meantime this bodes well for a singer who less than a year ago, in the opening days of the top 24, was given less a chance of winning than the guy who worked the backstage coat room. He was the singer whom judge Cowell dismissed out of hand, saying he had zero charisma.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ winnerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s debut a feast for the ears

The man who was not originally going to audition for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is probably now thanking his lucky stars. David Cook, who auditioned in Nebraska with Bon Jovià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Livinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ on a Prayer,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was initially there only to support his brother à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ who was not as successful at making it to Hollywood.

It was down to the two Davids in the last week, and as it turns out, the one with a rocker style and rough voice won it all and took the title as the seventh à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner. David Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s self-titled debut album portrays a wide variety of music styles and instrumentals, all of which are enhanced with his rock sound and husky voice.

David Cook: ‘David Cook’

As the first full-on rocker to win American Idol, David Cook turned to some of his heroes for help with his first post-Idol album, which actually is his second solo album (he released a CD called Analog Heart in 2006).

A pair of producers who know a thing or two about sleek rock records – Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) and Brian Howes (Hinder, Chris Cornell) signed on to help Cook get an album quickly assembled after his underdog victory over David Archuleta last spring..

Cook got to write with Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace and Norway’s Espionage

David Cook – David Cook

- After winning American Idol in May, David Cook had a lot riding on his impending album. He had just won over squeaky-clean teen crooner David Archuleta and had to prove to the public that he was a true rocker. He also had to deal with the constant comparisons to that other à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ who can growl his lyrics, season five contestant Chris Daughtry.

Does Cook deliver? Yes. Is he up there with Daughtry? He can be, eventually. Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s self-titled debut is a solid work. Although some songs could be grated a bit more to give them a harder edge, Cook does have people who voted for him who maybe arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t ready for an all-around hard rock record.

‘Idol’ champ David Cook keeps rocking on new album

NEW YORK (AP) – When he was on “American Idol,” David Cook – as cool as a cucumber for much of last season – fought back tears after performing for a studio audience that included his brother Adam, who’s fighting brain cancer.

It was a moment of raw emotion, winning Cook the sympathy of viewers who’ve also been touched by tragedy.

Cook’s tears have flowed more freely in private. The 25-year-old rocker, who won the Fox competition in May, fueled his anguish over Adam’s illness into the gut-wrenching ballad “Permanent,” one of 13 songs on his namesake debut album.

After recording the track in two takes, “I actually called my dad and wept openly for about 10 minutes,” he says.

David Archuletaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first-week record sales rank him third among runners-up, 10th overall

Archuleta sold 183,000 copies of David Archuleta, according to Billboard, placing him second for the week, behind Taylor Swift, who sold 592,000 copies of her debut.

Those 183,000 copies place Archuleta behind just Bo Bice, whose record sold 226,976 copies in 2005, and Clay Aiken, whose Measure of a Man sold 612,859 copies in 2003 and remains the reigning champ of runners-up, according to numbers compiled by MJà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Big Blog. Archuleta just beat Katharine McPheeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s early 2007 self-titled debut, which sold 115,761 copies. That makes his debut the best in three years for a runner-up.

Album reviews: ‘American Idol’s’ new self-titled albums

Seems only apropos that the two finalists — both Davids, mind you — who duked it out at the end of “American Idol” earlier this year would release debut albums within a week of each other. But while “American Idol” devotees are liable to snap up both CDs, they represent different ends of the pop spectrum.

With veteran producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) on board, David Cook delivers unquestionably heartfelt renditions of the 13 songs that appear on his debut, though much of the album still sounds like so many other mainstream modern rock discs that clutter the landscape.

Underwood shows her command of, and joy for, the stage

Despite her small stature, former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood knows how to own a stage.

The blonde powerhouse of a singer delivered an energetic and sometimes sentimental performance Wednesday night to a crowd of screaming fans at the E Center in West Valley City. The event included at least four costume changes and a mix of ballads and rock-infused melodies.

Her opening act, Little Big Town, also joined Underwood for a lively version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.” The group, which became well-known about two years ago, gave a powerful 45-minute introduction to Underwood with songs such as “A Little More You” and “Boondocks.”

Kristy Lee Cook on the Move?

Kristy Lee Cook came to prominence this year as a contestant on “American Idol,” and her rejuvenated career as a country artist presents a bit of a travel problem.

Kristy Lee is from Oregon, and the air travel to and from Nashville can chew up plenty of time. As a result, sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s looking for a place in Music City, though sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not buying.

Why Country Not Only Survived but Thrived

If you tuned in to the CMA Awards on ABC last week to catch performances by young country stars Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley and Sugarland, or by veterans Alan Jackson and George Strait, you are not alone. This year’s telecast of the country music awards was seen by more than 34 million viewers. You might have seen the September telecast of last summer’s CMA Music Festival, too — the only festival of any musical variety that is broadcast on network prime time. If you’re not sure who or what the “CMA” behind those events is, you’re not entirely alone in that, either. But the Country Music Association, based in Nashville, is marking its 50th anniversary this month.

McEntire, Clarkson thrill at Alltel

Country singer Reba McEntire and pop singer Kelly Clarkson shared the stage for a fun night of duets when their “2 Worlds 2 Voices” tour came to Little Rock’s Alltel Arena on Saturday.

Before the curtains rose, McEntire’s voice sang loud over the auditorium before Clarkson joined in on a cover of The Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” giving the crowd just a sneak peek of what to expect throughout the night.

However, Country music is where Dianaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s heart is, and sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s thrilled to be making an album in that genre right now. Just when these à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ thought theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d escaped Simon Cowell, along come the critics and the musical mavens, many of whom were critiquing and clucking about the craft long before most of these talents were born. One of the cultural gripes of the moment is the way the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ style pervades performing today. Young singers with little life experience belt their hearts out while making little emotional connection to the material.

    Where Sabrina Sloan is now:

The title The Princess and The Black-Eyed Pea, premiering this month at San Diego Repertory, should provide a clue that this musical is no ordinary adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale. It’s set in the heart of Africa where a princess from one kingdom (played by former American Idol contestant Sabrina Sloan) must overcome many obstacles to win a contest engineered by a queen (played by Tony Award winner Lillias White) that will land her the hand of the prince she loves (played by Josh Tower).

“We have adapted the show to a culture that perhaps it wasn’t intended for, but the underlying love story is what is universal,” explains librettist Kirsten Childs. “It’s been delightful finding the areas where the actors recognize the defining cultural meanings in the piece, and they can play off them.” Childs was invited to join the project this past summer by Andrew Chuckerman, who wrote the score with Karole Foreman, when the idea was no more than a collection of songs. “I really loved this collaborative process because it opened both of us up to new ideas,” says Childs. “Andy is a force to be reckoned with, because he deals with the dramatic spirit of the show in his music. It complements the heart and soul of the performers, which imbue the story with a magical quality.”

Childs, best known for the musical The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin, is also enjoying working with director Stafford Arima. “Stafford sees everything; he’s got 360 degree vision. He understands the process, and he listens to everyone in the ensemble, so we’ve had wonderful sessions.”

Hey, MJ, get a load of this… Now the LA Times is referencing mjsbigblog…

David Archuleta debuted on the Billboard Top 200 in the No. 2 position, selling 183,000 copies, putting him second only to country/pop phenom Taylor Swift. Over at the always comprehensive and authoritative Idol destination MJ’s Big Blog, they have rounded up an impressive array of statistics on where the Chosen One’s debut places him in Idol launch history. According to their stats, 183,000 places Archuleta third in the first week sales of second place finishers (behind Clay Aiken and Bo Bice) and 10th in all debut weeks (a category led by Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard and Carrie Underwood, his figures just edging Jordin Sparks out of the top 10.

MJ also points out that Archuleta’s numbers are at least 25% more impressive than they seem at first glance, given that album sales are off 24% this year from the same week last year. Archuleta’s single “Crush” is also just 10,000 downloads shy of making platinum on the digital charts.

When next week’s numbers are released, expect a giant pile-up between David Cook, Swift, Nickleback and Beyonce, all fighting for the top slot. Tonight the Idol champion sits at the No. 2 slot on iTunes top albums listings, just below Nickleback.

You’re famous MJ! Of course, much of the credit goes to Kirsten.

Oh, I’m going to get a big head. (Psst…MJ, make sure that there are only green M&M’s in my dressing room from now on! LOL).

I couldn’t produce these stats unless MJ provided the awesome site and, of course, there would be few stats without the amazing work that Nevada has done over the years. I wouldn’t be surprised if she is the source of all Idol stats from Seasons 1-4 and most of the hard to get stats from all seasons. I am in awe of her investigative and organizational skills.

I have no sources, so Ken Barnes and the leakers at various sites also deserve mucho credit. And 2m over at Pulse for his stats. I better shut-up or this is going to be a longer list of acknowledgements than Archie put out.

BTW, official numbers have leaked. David Archuleta moved 182,927 in his first week.

    Yahoo – Lefsetz

Or if you want the SoundScan numbers:

    2 ARCHULETA*DAVID DAVID ARCHULETA 182,927 999 197 183,124

Why is one 182K and the other 183K? Sorry I’m a little confused about the numbers.

  • soundscene

Street violations. Billboard is counting albums bought prior to the official release date when stores like Walmart or Target put the albums out early (they’re not supposed to).

    2 ARCHULETA*DAVID DAVID ARCHULETA 182,927 999 197 183,124

    2=Ranking
    182,927=albums sold this week
999=percentage increase/decrease since last week (999 is the max number. The field overflowed. Actual precentage would have been 95,802%)
197=albums sold last week (street violations as soundscene noted)
    183,124=total albums sold to date

LOL Kirsten… but still Congrats and credits for MJ for her awesome blog….

    PS.

In Archie ´s defense his liners were 2197 words long….

Thanks. And street violations? Sounds like you should get a speeding ticket or something.

    From FOD:

Next Single Will Be A Little Too Not Over You!

FOD has learned from a very reliable source that David Archuletaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s next single will be A Little Too Not Over You!

Jive decided last night to switch the next released single from Touch My Hand to A Little Too Not Over You.

David is currently working with Jeff and others to conceptualize the video for ALTNOY! The video for Touch My Hand was all planned out, so the team is very busy switching gears right now.

    Are we deliriously happy?! YES!

Our lovable source said that he is very happy about this: ALTNOY is a happy song and yet still a nice contrast to Crush, and best of all, David co-wrote it.

    Fans make a difference.

    .
My wish has come true…. Jive I love you!!!!!

  • Davidx2

A much better choice, IMO. :clap_tb:

I am not surprised that ALTNOY will be DA’s next single. It is doing so well on the charts. Wow, I heard it here first.

CathyMK- I watched that CNN video of Cook’s and although it said one of the highlights was that Cook and David get a long, I didn’t see that in there anywhere.

Also, has anyone watched the Miley Cyrus video on CNN where Ellen asks her repeatedly about whether she has a boyfriend. She is such a teenager. Huge difference between her and DA’s interview!

  • ealbino

    Yay for ALTNOY! :clap_tb: :jittery_tb: :drunk_tb: :thumbup_tb:

A Little Too Not Over You!!??? Wow, this is great news! Good move, Jive!! :)

  • sma11ie

LK08, it’s in the print article. They edited some questions out of the video.

CNN: All this talk about you and ["American Idol" runner-up] David Archuleta being mortal enemies is absolute garbage, isn’t it?

Cook: It is. David is one of the most unassuming, down-to-earth people I think I’ve ever met. It seems like he has no idea he was even on the show, let alone did well. And I find that really endearing. He’ll be the first to congratulate you. He seems to just appreciate every moment

“A Little Too Not Over You” is #14 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. That means it’s verging on hitting the Hot 100.

“A Little Too Not Over You” is a better song than “Touch My Hand,” not that it necessarily matters.

  • cheese

ALTNOY is the one which reminds me of OSAAT, which I hate. It sounds, I don’t know, girly. Oh well, I like both songs more than I like Crush. (“Touch My Hand” is guilty pleasure song #1 in my house right now, lol)

I wish Jive could pick Cook’s next single.

  • abbysee

Way to go Jive, that’s a smart move. It’s a better song, even though I love TMH too, it’s just that I find myself singing “I just can’t figure it ouuuut……tell me wiiiiiiiy. Yep, great next single.

  • frogcooke

lol cheese, I always love me some TMH, actually my station just played it 30 minutes ago hahaha.

Do you think Dec will be the second single? Seems to be doing good on itunes.

Actually Running reminds me to OSAAT… but I like Running the better…

Is not that TMH is bad, I sing alone every time it appears in my iPod is just that it seems like is targeted to us his fans more than to produce new buyers… IMHO…

some intresting news at least a rumor that Jordin might no longer be with 19 Management though still with 19 Recordings and Jive .

    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi

THE SPARKS ARE GONE: Simon Fuller’s 19 Entertainment has terminated its management relationship with Jordin Sparks. The 19 Recordings label will continue as Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s record company with its joint venture partner, Jive Records. (11/20p)

  • smartcookie

I wonder what in the world that means. I always did think it was odd that it took so long for Jordin to sign a contract. Maybe they (or her dad, or 19M because of dad) always planned for her to part ways after the first album.

  • cruzceleste

^Wow, that is some rumors… well Good Luck for Jordin.. IÂ ´m not her biggest fan but she seems like a nice girl…

19M has been making some really odd decisions lately. I mean, I could get how maybe they wouldn’t sign Archie because they wanted to concentrate on one new person from Idol a year (and that would be the winner), but cutting her after 3 straight top 5 CHR hits? That’s just stupid.

Like smartcookie said, maybe this was planned from the get-go–and Jordin and her Dad wrote into the contract that they would have an “out” in a year. If that’s the case–smart girl. 19M is great if they’re focusing on you, but terrible if their attention is elsewhere.

I’m sure there will be plenty of offers coming her way. She should join Archie at Azoff–they’re doing so well that they just acquired a new management company and now have John Mayer under their umbrella.

  • Michelle

How odd. It’s not like Jordin is doing badly. I wonder who broke up with who?

  • leome

Maybe they’re looking into the future and not the present…
