Phillip Phillips, The Lumineers, And The Mumford-ization Of Pop – The incessant shopping trips start to make your life feel like a single, unbroken stream of home-furnishings-related commerce when you reach a certain age and all your friends get married. So I’m not sure when or why I was in a mall parking lot with my wife when I first heard “Home” on the radio this year. What I do remember is that the song struck me as slightly unusual for WNCI, the local top-40 station we were bumping on that particular Macy’s trip. The chorus reached to the heavens on the strength of acoustic guitars, arching choral harmonies and a relentless 4/4 thud maintained by kick drum and stomping feet. The earnest lead vocal was a robust tenor accented with folksy tremble and weathered beyond its years like distressed denim. The chorus went like this: “Settle down, it’ll all be clear / Don’t pay no mind to the demons that fill you with fear / The trouble it might drag you down / If you get lost, you can always be found / Just know you’re not alone / Because I’m gonna make this place your home.” This had to be Mumford & Sons, right? – Read more at Stereogum

Phillip Phillips Calls His Own Shots on Debut Album – “That was the biggest thing, man,” he tells Rolling Stone, referring to his outside-the-box vision for The World From the Side of the Moon, due today. “I wanted to have a lot of freedom on the album.” It’s rare that winning a singing competition gives an artist the power to call his own shots. But thankfully for Phillips, Interscope head Jimmy Iovine had mentored the singer on Idol, and had witnessed firsthand his knack for turning left-field decisions into melodic gold. The two had what Phillips describes as a “good talk” about the album, after which Iovine gave the singer free rein. “He had a lot of trust in me,” Phillips says. “I felt really good about that. He wanted me to make the album I wanted to which I thought was really awesome of him.” – Read more at Rolling Stone

Phillip Phillips looks at life beyond “American Idol” – Q: How do you plan to transition from “American Idol” winner to a mainstream music career? A: “It’s pretty funny that you mention that because the majority of the people I meet don’t even know that I was on ‘Idol.’ It’s really cool to hear that. When I go home, people ask, ‘What’ve you been doing? I’ve heard your song,’ but they don’t even know that I’ve been on ‘Idol.'” Q: Would you do anything differently next time? A: “It’s still early, but I’d definitely want a little more time to do it. But that’s really about it, because three weeks is just really quick, and also I have just so many other things going on. … It was very kind of stressful and hopefully for the next record I’ll have a little more time.” – Read more at Reuters

Carrie Underwood On ‘Nashville’: ‘We’re Not That Scandalous’ – Underwood might have some acting in her future. Though vague on the subject, she promises there’s something very different in line for her in the new year. It’s “something really different that would be out of my comfort zone, a really wonderful thing to put on my ‘I did that’ list,” she said. Before that she will spend time doing much more familiar activity, touring, with another 40 dates added to her spring 2013 itinerary. It makes for a lot of time on the road, but for Underwood it’s fine – it means people are interested. “Everything is going extremely well so far for the next leg. Nightclub to ‘Glee’ Star You Don’t Pay … You Don’t Get In – “Glee” star Amber Patrice Riley threw a childish self-important temper tantrum last night at a NYC nightclub — all because the club refused to supply her 30-PERSON party with an arsenal of free booze — this according to the nightclub in question. In case you missed it, Amber went off the rails on Twitter last night when WIP nightclub put the kibosh on her party plans — writing, “Never in my life have I dealt with such disrespect. That club @WIPNewYork on Vandam street, they are CROOKS and LIARS!” FYI — WIP nightclub is the place where the infamous Drake vs. Chris Brown brawl went down earlier this year. – Read more at TMZ

Chris Colfer has all the luck – Turning a screenplay into a book seems like kind of a backward adaptation. Oh, it totally was. It was really a very unique process. I wrote the screenplay, and the way the screenplay is formatted compared to the way the movie was edited is completely different. There are many scenes that were cut — well, there were many scenes that had to be cut because we couldn’t afford to film them. – Read more at Metro.US
