But the show’s overseers have recently loosened the creative reins, or at least given the appearance of doing so. Both “Cook” and “Archuleta” offer previously forbidden glimpses, however brief, of the artists’ actual personalities: Cook is Chris Cornell as a Midwestern bar singer; Archuleta seems to be made entirely of fluffy unicorns and Skittles.

But both “David Cook” and “David Archuleta” are better albums than the tone-deaf show souvenirs most contestants are routinely saddled with.

I went to the last SYTYCD show of the tour in Tampa tonight and it was great. I’ll do a recap later, but I just have to say a few things.

- Spense is amazing. She was not able to go to the show tonight, but she did get tickets for our (huge) group coming from Orlando, and not only that, but gave me and Sarah-friend #1 her front row seats since she couldn’t go.
- Twitch was injured and not able to dance. He said he injured himself LAST NIGHT. DAMN IT. They pretty much just cut all of his dances, except that Thayne did the Russian Trepak with Joshua.
- Courtney cried just about every time she was on stage. It was sweet.
- Mark is even HAWTER when dancing in person. OMG. That’s all I will say because anything else could quickly devolve into “did I just say that out loud?” type information. Heh.
- Courtney & Gev are A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E.
- Joshua & Katee dancing together = Love. That is all.
- Will, in the opening number, looked DIRECTLY at me and grinned. Set the stage for the rest of the night. I could not wipe the cheesy grin off my face.
- Chelsie H is really, really pretty and really, really good live. She cried a lot too. She and Mark are just great dancing together.
- I WISH I HAD A BODY LIKE CHELSEA TRAILLE’S.
- I was not complaining about Thayne’s perma-smile, because he’s actually very cute, and did a really good job filling in various spots in the show. And he also smiled that not-so-annoying smile at us – a couple times.
- Gev also smiled and waved at us. (I’m telling you. Spense is awesome. These were totally OMG seats.)
- Sarah-friend #1 got LOTS of pics. If they turn out well, I’ll put them in a photobucket for everyone to see.

Idol-bashing L.A. Times blogger is now a fangirl

Whoa- Ann Powers, who used Cook as one of her prime examples of “Flyover Rock”, has been Cookified? Her article/review is the most positive and sympathetic that I’ve seen so far. And her favorite song is A Daily Anthem, the one song on the album David wrote himself. I feel like I’m in some alternate universe, she speaks so highly of him, his talents, and his cowriters. Never underestimate the power of the Cookie to win people over, even if they think they can’t stand him to begin with.

USA Today seems to be predicting that Cook will be the lowest-selling Idol winner evah!

Yes, and Ken Barnes at USA Today also said this about Cook’s prospects with TOML in comparison to past coronation songs:

David C. is likely to surpass Taylor on this list (that should happen in a couple of weeks), and he might have a shot at Ruben and Carrie, but picking up another 360,000 downloads to beat Kelly has to be considered an outside possibility.

The rainbow sailed past Kelly two weeks ago, and will easily surpass Clay’s single this week (in addition to crossing the Platinum barrier either this week or next). That will make TOML the highest-selling coronation song ever, based on Ken’s attempt to equalize the apples/oranges comparison of physical vs. download sales. And Dave did it in less than 6 months. Kelly and Clay have sold their totals over 5-6 years (Kelly released AMLT in 2002 and has sold an additional 160K copies since 2006).

TOML isn’t close to done yet, and I actually still think LO may have longer legs than many are predicting. But we’re a long way from knowing whether any of the S7 contestants will be successful commercially. That’s just not something that can be judged by a few singles or first-week debut album sales.

I think they wanted to give the two perspectives. That one saying that and Tom Vickers saying it will be a hit.

Hey, my kid downloaded Touch My Hands today. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the only song on David Archuleta she likes even though she realizes the lyrics are kind of lame.

Sorry, nothing personal, just that I think ALNTOY is a really cool song and it has being selling really well with out promotion, so I guess just IMHO is a great choice for the next single…
