Lee DeWyze worked ‘Jedi mind trick’ on RCA to let him record his own songs

“The truth of the matter is, I’ve always put myself out there and hoped for the best, ” says the winner of American Idol’s ninth season, who releases his album Live It Up Tuesday. “Whether it’s deciding to go on the show or just every day life, for me, it has always been the way my life is. I always tell myself, ‘Things will work out; just think positive, and just throw your hands up in the air.’ That’s kind of what I did for a long time, so that song speaks true to me.”

But if mere good fortune got him through Idol and into the recording studio, he needed more than that to become the rare Idol act to write nearly his entire first album after the show.

“It was a Jedi mind trick with the label, ” says Lee, who co-wrote 10 of 11 songs on Live It Up, including Sweet Serendipity.

Giving V for the ‘X’ judge job – Waiting for Simon’s call

But the biggest guessing game of the moment is: who will Simon Cowell pick to judge what could be the biggest talent contest of all: “X Factor.”

Paula Abdul seems out. She’s fronting a new CBS dance show set to start early next year.

Mariah Carey is headed for maternity leave just when Simon would need her.

At the moment, there looks to be a backstage battle heating up between Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger — last season’s champion on “Dancing With The Stars” — and Cheryl Cole, the British pop singer who is already a judge on the show’s UK edition.

Scott MacIntyre visits Nashville, works on his book

Scott MacIntyre spent most of last week in Nashville. While the former American Idol finalist scheduled some songwriting sessions during his first trip to Nashville, and sang the national anthem at Saturday’s hockey game between the Nashville Predators and the Chicago Blackhawks, he spent most of his time in Music City focusing on business.

“There are a lot of irons in the fire, ” Scott told me shortly before Saturday’s game. ‘I’ve been in meetings solidly — Wednesday night when I got in, then all day Thursday and Friday.”

Scott hasn’t been in the public eye as much this year as he was during 2010, but he has been keeping busy — busy playing concerts, releasing his Heartstrings album, working on a book scheduled to come out next year and making public speaking appearances.

‘American Idol’ star rolling

Constantine Maroulis plays the lead role in a musical so willing to make fun of musicals that one of the characters is referred to on stage as “Waitress No. 1.”

The least I can do, then, is make fun of lunch-with-an-actor stories by announcing right up front what he ordered at Pegasus: saganaki, followed by pastitsio. Unlike his mother’s pastitsio, it came with a red sauce. Maroulis said it was good.

Also, so I don’t have to cleverly work it in later, this is what he wore: A black jacket with more than the average number of zippers, a blue shirt open to the fourth button, a long silver pendant, skinny black jeans and black work boots.

I thought he looked cool, and so did the girl on the sidewalk in Greektown who called out, “Are you Constantine?”

Former ‘Idol’ Fantasia, back from the brink

Fantasia Barrino doesn’t want to talk about the night in August when she tried to kill herself.

To her, it’s done. It’s over. It’s old news.

“I’m moving on…. I just want everybody to know that I’m good. I am human. So because I’m human, that makes me just like you, ” the Charlotte-based R&B singer told the Observer in a recent phone interview.

Couples Watch: Jennifer & Marc Catch a Show in Vegas

After attending the Latin Grammy Awards Thursday night, Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony made a quick change and ran across the street to catch the late-night performance of KÀ by Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Katie Waissel track ‘released in US’

Katie Waissel has lent her vocals to a track that was released in the US last week, it has been revealed.

The X Factor contestant sings on the new album by South Carolina musician David Reed, although show rules state that contestants cannot hold a current recording contract, reports The Sun.

Waissel avoided disqualification from the ITV singing competition in September after it emerged that she was already signed to Chamberlain Records. Simon Cowell’s lawyers reportedly fought to get the 24-year-old out of her deal so she could participate on the show.

Dancing’s Derek Hough: Show’s Focus on Jennifer’s Injuries Has Been “Overkill”

TVGuide.com: Her injuries have taken over your packages the past few weeks.
Hough: It’s kind of a shame because we have a lot of fun together. We laugh and joke around. I’m always being dumb and weird. But with her injuries, that’s what they’ve been showing. But I don’t want people to get the impression that that’s all that goes on. It’s a minute package out of a 30-hour week.

Glee’s Chord Overstreet on the Gwyneth Episode, His Future With Quinn & Why He Won’t Get Naked

Glee’s newest hottie, Chord Overstreet, was out at the launch event for Lotus Cars on Friday, so we took the opportunity to grill him on all things Glee, including his future with Quinn, working with Gwyneth Paltrow, that GQ cover and why he won’t show us his goods in Playgirl.

As far as his relationship with Dianna Agron, he’s playing coy. “There’s some tension, some drama, that happens here and there. There’s some good fun stuff. I’m basically talking without giving away any storyline, ” the bespectacled star told me.

But he wouldn’t talk about his costars’ “borderline pedophilia” magazine cover at all…
