‘American Idol’ alums have busy month of album releases, tours

What are Matt Giraud’s Season 8 “American Idol” cohorts up to these days? Plenty.

Champ Kris Allen will release his album Tuesday, runnerup Adam Lambert is hot on his heels with a Nov. 23 debut, and Allison Iraheta drops her first disc Dec. 1. Not to be outdone, Danny Gokey’s label, RCA Nashville, released his first single on his Web site months before his album will hit stores in mid-2010.

Listening to their first singles reminded me how much variety — and talent — made up “American Idol’s” most recent season. Each wildly different tune is a potential hit, and there’s not a dud in the bunch. Here’s my take:

Tragedy has kept American Idol winner David Cook, at Casino Rama Monday, on an even keel

David Cook has had the highest of career highs and the lowest of personal lows in the past year.

After auditioning only at the last minute, he went on to actually win the 2008 American Idol competition with his distinctive rock wail.

Following the victory, he had 11 songs debut on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest number of new songs by one artist in a single week since The Beatles in 1964.

“It’s pretty incredible,” Cook, 26, said down the line from Milwaukee prior to a show Monday at Casino Rama north of Toronto, his final stop on a short eastern swing of Canada. “I refuse to wrap my head around that because it’s a little strange.”

David Cook feels ‘American Idol’ pressure

David Cook is part of an exclusive club — one that comes with 30 million potential fans and alums such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

He’s an “American Idol” winner and there are only seven others like him.

Cook has fared pretty well to this point in his post-”Idol” career.

His self-titled album sold more than a million copies, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard charts and producing the hit singles “Lights On” and “Come Back to Me.”

Cook followed the album release with an ambitious touring schedule that’s had him and his band on the road since February. He recently sat for a few questions.

X Factor: Sinitta reveals stressed out Simon Cowell is ‘comfort eating’ and hooked on Angel Delight

X Factor boss Simon Cowell has become hooked on Angel Delight as he struggles to cope with the backlash over Jedward.

He was so rattled by the row over the twins that he’s started comfort eating his favourite childhood pudding, according to best pal Sinitta.

‘He has a two-packet-a-day problem or habit ‘“ it’s his comfort food,’ said mum-of-two Sinitta, 41.

‘He walks round with a packet of cigarettes and a packet of Angel Delight. He will have a bowl of pink Angel Delight at home or even in the back of a limo.

‘It’s very 80s and he’s an 80s child.’

Why Simon Cowell is the real winner of X Factor

It was the moment that Simon Cowell ‘“ and the public ‘“ had been waiting for. The X-Factor’s self-styled Mr Nasty, and the one judge who had heaped constant criticism onto Dublin-born twins John and Edward Grimes in every single show, finally had his chance to kick them into touch last Sunday.

So when Cowell failed to eliminate the teenage singing sensation from Cardiff, known to their growing army of fans as “Jedward”, the horrified look on his fellow judges’ faces said it all. Was it a fleeting moment of madness on Cowell’s part ‘“ or simply another step in his grand plan to make even more money?

In the new music section of my weekly Target ads this morning, the four CDs with the biggest pictures are One Republic, Norah Jones, John Mayer, and Kris Allen (all $9.98). Smaller pictures are of Janet Jackson, Justin Bieber, and Leona Lewis.

Surreal that this is all starting to happen “in real life”. BTW, John Mayer looks like Kris’ older brother (if he had one) – same hair!.

Any predictions for most sales this week? I’m predicting John Mayer and that Justin Bieber kid. (because of the JoBro/Miley crowd) One Republic,Mayer and Kris are sort of from the same musical vein. It will be interesting to see if the AI 8 trend continues. (I’m hoping it doesn’t!)

Interesting that Danny seems to be starting his radio tour out in California, since that isn’t exactly the strongest country music market. But good luck to him, hope it goes well

They may also want the daylight and having been on a few shoots, (as an observer) these things take all day. I’m personally not digging the time change because it gets dark here in Los Angeles by 5:30 p.m. or so. Also, they will need alot of parking. Best to get there early. I wonder if Adam gets his own trailer? :)

Just got back from a workout listening to Adam’s new tracks. What a fantastic beat MP has and killer lyrics. WWFM has Adam’s great vocals and a beautiful song. fye is just plain naughty fun. The thing is these aren’t even the strongest songs on the album, IMO. It is no wonder RCA is pushing the album, they have long known what they have here. God, I can’t wait 7 more days!

  • gemini1

Wow, Conan sure helped LLWD. Can’t wait for FYE promo to start!!

I think it has more to do with his video. There weren’t any sales surges that night.(after Conan) Color me surprised that videos have any impact, but I guess they wouldn’t make them if they didn’t help. I guess people still watch those video shows.
It’s all very interesting to watch. I’ve never followed the charts before. I am glad that Kris is going first though.(single and album release, video, talk shows)It helps to give me more realistic expectations.

John Mayer and Norah Jones I expect to be the big winners. Norah Jones may seem like a dark horse but even though she’s never been a radio monster her last 2 CD’s sold INSANE numbers their first week. One Republic I dont think will be high at all. Their last CD barely sold 80,000 its first week and that was coming off of “Apologize” being a massive hit.

  • Eileen99

“Any predictions for most sales this week? ”

For Kris? At least 2. The iTunes pass I bought in May and the Walmart hard copy I’m planning to pick up for the Daughtry bonus track.

I agree with others that John Mayer and Norah Jones will be the top two. It’s hard to say how Justin Bieber will do, since he markets to the Miley demographic – he sells a ton of singles, but I don’t know that those same people will shell out $10 for a CD if they have 3-4 of the singles already.

Basically, I have no clue, however.

Regarding Simon & the X-Factor, wonder what he would have thought of David Archuleta as a child on Star Search?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6fKno0FVkY&feature=related

I also looked at Britney, Justin & Christina’s Star Searches and like David they all put a “growl” in their voice. None of their performances (to me) indicated “future star”, all seemed over rehearsed by (probably) over zealous parents. In fact, David was almost like a little Adam, had his “sexy” going on.

Well, he ain’t doing that for WYWFM, that’s for bloody sure. ;) I am curious as hell, tho. Now what I expected, and not really family friendly is it?! I would see that more for the AMAs. Like I know. I do not know.

Patty, yes, I said 11, not 8. lol I guess, as usual, I suck at numbers. I squee and flail and let YOU guys work on the numbers, he he

Man, I would give ANYTHING for Adam and Carrie to co-host SNL. Or for Adam just to be the musical guest, and a duet would cause palpitations. If Conan gave Kris a big bump (along with VH-1), it seems that the AMAs would do that for Adam, too. Or, you know, any promotion. Is anyone still curious about WYWFM playing twice on Open House Party? Cause I still am.

One thing more before I go to the GAP: Ryan mentioned Kris, Adam, and Danny on AT 40, but no Allison. Whassup with that? Someone tweet him (NOT ME, SORRY, I AM STILL WAITING FROM CLAUDE, MONTE, and RYAN TEDDER re: Master Plan).

Danny’s on live now at http://dreamcenter.org/dcLive/

Interesting that Danny seems to be starting his radio tour out in California, since that isn’t exactly the strongest country music market. But good luck to him, hope it goes well

It’s not too clear where they will be going. There is a station in the bay area that’s been running a contest for people to attend a breakfast event with Danny. I saw someone based out of LA who was all excited on twitter that she would be interviewing Danny on Tuesday. He may be making several hops around California, perhaps out west — including areas that are more country friendly. It’s also a media center, so there may be some interviews planned we haven’t learned about yet.

I’d guess the next stop will be midwest, as Danny’s due in Detroit for the Thanksgiving black-tie fundraiser, and then heading to WI. Not sure if we will get reports on the fundraiser performance — haven’t heard of any usual Danny fans who can pay the $1000/ticket for that one!

  • JosieX

steph, thanks for posting that livestream link. I am not usually up and around this early on a Sunday morning but happened to see this, and got to see Danny sing. As far as I know, this is the first time he has sung “It’s Only” live, it was cool to get to see that!

  • suebrody

Does anyone know about Open House Party airing tonight? I can’t bear to hear any of it except if Adam is on again. What a train wreck. Truly painful.

Hoping for some twitpics from Adam’s shoot. Guess will have to follow Twitter the Devil (because I never do ;) ).

  • gingerly

I wonder if Adam gets his own trailer? :)

If he wants to pay for it, he does. Hell, if he wants to pay for it, he could have two trailers. I think I’ve heard quoted that 50% of a video’s cost is paid for by the artist. I’m sure there’s variations, but I’d guess that’s a pretty standard figure. I’d think, however, that every time the demands are upped by the artist, they have to shell out more. Never fool yourself that the label isn’t in control and isn’t charging the artist’s account for every little thing.

suebrody, that is the format Adam is trying to hit. That is exactly the thing that I said wtf to when DC didn’t make it huge on that format. I actually don’t listen to much radio at all (except for a couple of stations that are very much not mainstream), but I did listen to HAC for a while when DC was charting there…actually he’s still charting there but in recurrency.

Anyhow, I won’t listen (you can’t even make me) to T-40, dance, rhythmic or any of those kind of stations. Not going to happen. That’s probably exactly why I’m not a fan of Adam Lambert. For me it’s not the voice, but how he chooses to use it. Blech for me.

The thing about Ryan not mentioning Allison is strange – if you go to the AT40 website there are ads for Allison’s CD and single all over the place. At40 is Ryan’s show so you’d think he’d mention the artist with ads all over the site.

John Mayer and Norah Jones I expect to be the big winners.

I agree. Although, I will admit that Norah Jones seems to have been “off the grid” for quite awhile now. Wonder if sales will suffer as a result?

This year’s release schedules (particularly those for Kris’ and Adam’s weeks) seem really packed. Is it always like this? I didn’t remember Archie’s and Cook’s looking so difficult last year. Maybe it’s perspective. :-)

ETA: No offense to Kris or his (state) kin, but imo, Little Rock would be a seriously ridiculous (not in a good way) place for that concert. Not that I’m a fan of the concert itself anyway, but I really believe Ark is not the place for it, particularly if the goal is to be broad promotion for them (outside of the AI stigma.) And, no this is not regional prejudice speaking, as I reside in that region. I just do not believe that would be optimal (or even advisable tbh.) Mileage…

Since McDonald Selznick Associates (MSA) released the above-linked news blurb on their website discussing the fact that Jamie King will be working with Adam, I’m guessing this information has moved a notch above the “rumor” level.

Here is a little clip of Jamie and Mel B. talking about Jamie’s involvement with the Spice Girls’ tour. They were both judges on a Bravo reality dance show and towards the end of the clip they start discussing the dancers on the show. The beginning part, however, gives you some insight as to what Jamie will bring to the table. I had to smile when Mel B. talks about Jamie being the one to tell them their “shoes are too high” or their “hair’s too big.” He may be just the guy to tell Adam “no f#$*ing flames shooting out of your head, dude.”

I always thought the movie would do well outside of the U.S. Action movies always do. People who don’t speak English can “enjoy” them as much as those who do *and* there are not many cultural or social barriers to explosions, violence, landslides, volcano eruptions and tidal waves. Everyone gets those things, unlike movies like When Harry Met Sally or The Informant, or “name your favorite movie with some actual interesting dialogue” where understanding of the culture as well as the language is really important.

Of course I caught the Pacquiao fight, I’m half-Filipino. I didn’t watch the first two rounds or anything before that because I was scared of Cotto so I missed Ramiele. Dammit! Not a good way to have a relationship with my future second girlfriend after Allison accidentally dedicates Friday I’ll Be Over U to our strained relationship :P .

This year’s release schedules (particularly those for Kris’ and Adam’s weeks) seem really packed. Is it always like this? I didn’t remember Archie’s and Cook’s looking so difficult last year.

Hm, let’s consider the pack that The Davids dropped against last year. Archie’s album dropped with Taylor Swift and T-Pain. And David Cook’s album dropped against Beyonce and Nickelback. Yeah, lightweights for sure.

  • jms

How can Little Rock even remotely beat out NYC and LA given their population? Even the entire state of Arkansas doesn’t have as many people as the city of LA.

    Hardly anyone is voting.

  • gingerly

I listened to Ramiele sing the National Anthem. I thought she did a very nice job. It wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t need to be. I was very happy (and no part Filipino for me but I will always have a soft spot for her) that she didn’t try to break into vocal Olympics. That always ruins the song for me. I just never view that song as a chance for people to show us everything (and more on occasion) that they can bring.

On a different subject, I would think that if L.A. or New York want that concert more than Little Rock, they will vote accordingly. It’s as simple as that as far as I see it.

  • weareallinnocent

Well, SashaB, thank you. As I said, “I didn’t remember…” And, apparently, I was right, I really didn’t remember!

Sorry to have offended you. I’ve never really watched these things too closely (or at all) until last year, and apparently I didn’t watch it all that closely even then. Glad you’re on the ball though! LOL

But I will distinguish Archie dropping with Swift and T-Pain, as really not facing any genre competition. Cook either, I guess, except for that Nickelback crap that I hate to even have (my guy) Cook loosely associated with. :-) I guess it’s all in the perspective. Lady GaGa during Adam’s week is a bit much for me… particularly when I’ll be buying both. Ha!

Isn’t San Diego Adam’s hometown? I mean, I know it is a large city and it would be hard to really get the community support like a smaller town like Little Rock, but behind all those cities? Show some hometown pride for him lol!

I was at the San Diego concert and they had HUGE hometown pride for Adam, even though he hasn’t lived there in eight years. I would imagine they’re not too worried because they know that he will be playing in multiple Southern California venues soon enough. Also, the voting takes your zip code (unless they changed something from the first day), so all the suburbs are logged in as separate cities.

2012 has already made $225 million worldwide. These are Fri & Sat totals.

I always thought the movie would do well outside of the U.S. Action movies always do. People who don’t speak English can ‘enjoy’ them as much as those who do *and* there are not many cultural or social barriers to explosions, violence, landslides, volcano eruptions and tidal waves. Everyone gets those things, unlike movies like When Harry Met Sally or The Informant, or ‘name your favorite movie with some actual interesting dialogue’ where understanding of the culture as well as the language is really important.

A friend of mine went with seven of his friends (they are in their 20s and 30s). He said they all loved the visuals. He said he wouldn’t mind seeing the movie again just for the visuals. I asked if they sat through the credits. He said they heard TFM half-way through and left, altho he did say there were people who were still sitting. He also said the song started playing immediately when the movie was over.

I’ll be going next week when everyone else is at the Twilight movies, and I will be sitting throught about five min. of credits.

Many of the Lambert fans want absolutely nothing to do with this concert. For some fans, Kradam should have ended right after the KISS medley.

This is supposed to be the winner’s promotion so the best thing is for the winner’s home town to win the contest. Let the concert go where it will be most appreciated.

  • steph6449

steph, thanks for posting that livestream link. I am not usually up and around this early on a Sunday morning but happened to see this, and got to see Danny sing. As far as I know, this is the first time he has sung ‘It’s Only’ live, it was cool to get to see that!

JosieX, as far as I know, this was the first time Danny has sung his single live for a public audience. Nice that he could do it in front of an audience that knows him and would appreciate the message of the song.
Probably a big audience, also, that is a very large church. The pastor has some ~8000 twitter followers, I think.

  • gingerly

so all the suburbs are logged in as separate cities.

The way I read the rules (and yeah, I did) was that if you’re within 50 miles of a big city, you will count for that city. So me being in a suburb of Chicago would count me for Chicago. However, me being in a suburb of Chicago, if I put down New York, it would still count Chicago. Now I don’t know if I could go find a zip code and lie about it. I honestly only voted once before seeing the hoops they wanted us to jump through and decided I really don’t care if I see them or not.

There’s a holiday global pay-per-view cable Christmas show with former American Idols’ on Dec 5. Also featuring original songs, the two-hour concert will be shown live from the Lincoln Theater in Los Angeles and made available worldwide via cable pay-per-view for $5.99 (if ordered in November, $7.99 in December).

Called “American Christmas Live,” it’s described as “a chance to spend a magical evening with 12 ‘American Idol’ finalists as they perform holiday songs.”

Alexis Stone Lopez, Brandon Rogers, Chekezie, Haley Scarnato, Lindsey Cardinale, Nikki McKibben, RJ Helton, Sundance, Trenyce, Jasmine Trias and Nikko Smith are listed as performing.

It’s in an article that spells Kris’s name wrong, but cool for the Idols!!!

  • kt_cle

How many zip codes in LR as opposed to LA or NYC?

Not sure about that, but I believe the contest is set up so that the zip code entered has to be within 50 miles of the metro area chosen. If you vote for a city, you will see a message that says “you and XXX others have demanded a concert for CITY. I voted for my city, and the XXX others was about 150. To see how far out of contention we were, I voted for LR and the number was 1440-ish. I haven’t tried NY yet to see how close they are.

ETA: I just tried NY and it said ‘You and 1475 others have demanded…’ Very close!

You have to give your email address when you vote. I tried voting twice for my city using the same email address and the XXX number of other people did not change. I think it is one vote per email address per city.

Fwiw I saw 2012 last night and it was fun! Didn’t even seem overly long to me. 2 plus hours of staring at john cusack is worth the price of admission imo. Adam sounded great in the theater. Of course everyone left as soon as credits started rolling except for me (my husband abandoned ship and said he’d wait for me in lobby – he thought I was nuts) and another group of women. So if you were at the 7:30 kips bay show I saw you there listening!

Someone asked for real time numbers for the “Rock My Town” concert contest. At this moment, NYC has 1475; Little Rock has 1447; Los Angeles has 769. Those are the top three cities so far. You can change your location if you don’t live in one of the major cities (I voted in Little Rock metro area) so you aren’t tied to your zip code for a dinky town like I live in that wouldn’t stand a chance. I could, however, go to Little Rock. So, go vote if you want them to come to an area you are willing to travel to! There’s even an option for worldwide. I haven’t tried that since I won’t be traveling outside the country for it, but maybe some of you might.

You know, I have been thinking about all our hand wringing over airplay. It just occurred to me that I have not heard John Mayer, leona Lewis on my local stations. • Eileen99

“Has it had any effect on album sales yet??”

I am not really watching those numbers that closely right now, so maybe someone else knows. The iTunes pass has been on sale forever, so to me, the pre-sale stuff isn’t that interesting until the album drops. There was not the usual pent-up demand for Kris’ album, since people have been able to order it (in the form of the iTunes pass) all along, so I don’t find that all too intriguing.

The singles sales, though, and presumptive correlation to the promo activities and adds/spins/airplay does float my boat, on the other hand.

Since Adam hit #1 on Amazon on the first day, the lowest the album has been is #15 with one exception [#15 for 1 hour, #14 for 2 hours #11 & #12 for less than 48 hours]. For 1 hour, after the iTunes Deluxe album was put on preorder, The exception: FYE CD dropped to #25 for 1 hour, but then returned to #8. My guess is this was the effect of some order cancelations from people who decided to by the iTunes Deluxe instead.

I kinda feel like I should defend this guy, because I totally understand what he was thinking.

I can’t emphasize this enough, people in the industry have no idea about fandom. At all. The few fanboys/ girls and geeks there are out here are so busy trying to hide it from the non-fanboys/ girls that they wouldn’t dare say anything to those who don’t understand.

To most of the industry there are normal fans, dangerous stalkers, those weirdos who’ll wait in line for a long time for something, and Wil Wheaton. That’s pretty much as deep as it gets. Anyone who falls outside of one of those groups doesn’t exist.

He just thinks he’s throwing out something for the normal fans to wonder about, and the line waiters and the Wil Wheatons to research and fawn over. These people don’t quite fit the dangerous stalker profile, so they might as well be unicorns. He can’t really comprehend their existence.

Once you’ve been around enough performers and celebs you become numb to it. Why the heck would someone want to follow around another insecure kid who’s never even released and album? Damn reality TV taking away our jobs….and so forth.

I watched 2012 too’ ¦nice movie, a Titanic 2.0. I got misty-eyed (shallow, huh?) at certain scenes. People applauded a couple of times’ ¦not bad for a ‘flop’ movie. We stayed UNTIL THE VERY END together with 8 others. I’m beyond shy to sing along with Adam’ ¦and so was my backup singer, a few seats behind us. (Don’t care if the cleaning crew was there.) I don’t expect a big jump on TFM sales after that. Nobody will know it’s Adam singing without his gorgeous face on screen.

Just from what I’m hearing, the majority of the people are leaving after the movie, so they may hear a couple of minutes of TfM. So, I agree with you, I don’t expect much movement in sales. I don’t think that was Sony’s intent anyway. However, this does not negate the opportunity Adam had in making this soundtrack for a hugely successful movie, nor the future opportunities ahead for Adam.

I assume John Mayer will outsell Kris, especially the 1st week. Mainly because, well, he’s John Mayer — he has an established track record and a strong fanbase. But it’s interesting — at this moment, Mayer’s current single (Who Says) and Kris’ single are side-by-side on the iTunes chart (Mayer at #53, Kris at #54) (Leona Lewis’ current single, “Happy”, is at #34). Mayer and Kris are also side-by-side on Mediabase’s Live Hot AC chart, with Mayer at #21 and Kris at #22 (Kris is still increasing in spins, while Mayer is decreasing). Kris is WAY ahead of Mayer on the current Top 40 radio chart though — at #38, compared to Mayer at #65. Where Mayer has the biggest advantage on the charts is in the AAA market, where LLWD isn’t even being played.

Mayer’s album Battle Studies is currently #13 overall on iTunes. Is that the album that is dropping this week — or an older one? But while Kris’ album is #16 on the iTunes pop charts, Mayer’s isn’t in the top 25. Maybe they don’t list it as a pop album???

PS – Susan Boyle is well behind both Adam (#10) and Kris (#16) on the iTunes pop album chart. She’s #24

If he/she was so in the dark they wouldn’t be on Twitter.

I can’t emphasize this enough, people in the industry have no idea about fandom.

And this is why contracts are as thick as books. People have no common sense and need everything spelled out for them.

They are on Twitter for the same reason everyone in the entertainment industry is. It fuels the little tiny narcissist in the back of his psyche, and makes him feel in touch with what’s “cool” and “hip” right now. How else is he going to satisfy his ego if not with that RT from Ashton Kutcher?

Contracts aren’t what you think they are. I think fans are used to coming into contact with the areas of the industry that are populated with the Wil Wheatons of the world…genre TV and film. Not every show is run like the X- files, and not every film or video shoot is treated like the next Batman.

Money and ego trumps all in this world, and the industry is just now coming around to dealing with how to curb spoilers and fights on social networking sites while not hurting the bottom line or hurting the people who make that bottom line.

How in the world can Kris outsell John Mayer? I rather see Kris milking from Mayer and hopefully the Bieber kid. Kris certainly will get some of their fans buying his music.
He appeals to both demographics. But I don’t see anything negative for Kris releasing on the same day with them though they might both outsell him.

I’m pretty sure iTunes classifies John Mayer as rock, I know they have in the past. When looking at iTunes though the overall chart is more important. IMO John is like Norah Jones and Josh Groban, he doesn’t need huge airplay to generate big sales.

I seem to recall reading that Disney and Dreamworks have started instituting rules about Twittering for it’s people. Yes, they want to get people interested in, get some buzz going, whatever. But giving away spoilers and saying things counter to what the studios want, not of goodness.

And then there is the whole thing where false information and rumors start with people claiming to be in the know, claiming to have seen shoots, information, whatever.

So all this Twitter from the shoot? Could be real, could be fake. There is a reason they say pics or didn’t happen. I remember during the tour, someone decided to prank ontd_ai be telling them exactly what they wanted to hear regarding Kradam. On the other hand there was that teenageer who Tweeted about Adam’s TfM MV shoot, and despite some…interesting language choices, was telling the truth. Though the moostach and “little dots of hair,” was funny. Which she later said was a 5 o’clock shadow.

So my stance remains, Twitter is mostly the devil. Helpful for cyberstalking and information, also annoying and a source of mis-information.

The roll-outs of Kris and Adam couldn’t have been more diametrically opposed. RCA seems to be banking on the big bang theory of the AMA performance. I really do hope it does – I’m loving this fascinating look into the marketing side of the music business.

Not really sure they’re banking all on AMA, but I have the feeling they see the AMA performance as the starting point of their ad campaigne. In this instance, can’t cut him a break. He gave away too detailed of information. He should have kept it generic, that he could have done and it would have been fine for Adam and fine for his conveying whatever information he felt needed to be shared. Becuae unless he’s living under a rock, and/or a moron, he should know that people have fans of all varieties. And again, unless he’s a moron or living under a rock, than he knows that American Idol is the most popular TV show in America and has been for years, so their top tier people get a lot of interest on them right after their season on the show. Granted Adam is not, contrary to what some may feel, really that big of a deal in Hollywood, still the show is a big deal and everyone knows that and knows there are crazy fans associated with it. I mean they’re not Trekker level of known crazy, but yeah, it’s a known phenom.

Well I hope that RCA’s strategy pays off, because from I can see they have nothing planned until 11/22, so they have yet another week of non-promotion, and all the promotion starts after 11/22 the day before the album drops. Very different strategy than the longer, very intenstive roll-out for LLWD, where there has been a lot for weeks on the ground, doing the radio stuff, concentrating on that. And slowly building the radio’s spins up, and then adding things like the MV first, than the national performance on Conan, a few days before the album drop. Which have resulted in increased sales for the single, days before the album is released. Which is good, as singles can help sell albums. So I think this puts the album in a good place as well.

I am well known to be less than pleased with RCA’s thus fan non-existent FYE promotion, and the resulting crappy sales singles, so I won’t go into that again. But suffice it to say, I do think RCA is taking a big gamble. And one that I think is actually unnecessary one, because I think they could have also done all the stuff with radio that has been done for Kris, for these past two weeks leading up to the AMAs and then continuing the higher proflile promotions from there to keep up momenteum. As it is, FYE the single has no momenteum at all, and yet that’s all leading to the album dropping.

As you said, we’ll see if RCA’s risky and unncessary gamble will pay off. I sure hope so.

It’s possible that we’re underestimating Kris. However, Mayer is likely to move a lot of numbers in his first week, though, given his status and fanbase. He’s an established act in a time that favors established acts. And Norah could well be on the radar; she hasn’t been active in a while, but she has really broad name recognition and the kind of fanbase she has probably helps her cause more than hinders it.

How can Little Rock even remotely beat out NYC and LA given their population? Even the entire state of Arkansas doesn’t have as many people as the city of LA.

    Hardly anyone is voting.

I think NYC has about 4500 votes. Boston is 5th, but it ain’t happening for Boston. I want it to be in NYC, b/c I can go there and b/c I think it will get lots of coverage and will be a neutral site. OTOH, at that point, I don’t really care. IMO, this is more about Ryan and the advertising company than Adison (I don’t even like calling the Adison anymore).

As you said, we’ll see if RCA’s risky and unncessary gamble will pay off. I sure hope so.

I don’t see it as a gamble at all. They are concentrating on album sales right now. They’ve got a good handle on how many pre-orders are already there for the album. They know how much Adam sold during the idol season. (Probably much more than the pre-orders.) People buy CDs as presents for Christmas. The best way for them to get those CD sales maximized for the holiday season is to remind people of the Adam they saw on idol. The performer!! So they’re using the time to design and rehearse great live performances that will be seen by millions of people. Many of whom will remember him from idol and buy. And hopefully many of whom will think “how cool” and buy the CD for themselves or as a present for others.

After the holiday selling season is over with, they can concentrate on radio promos (that reach a smaller audience) and work on boosting radio play if it’s still necessary.

  • leome

Kris has had that iTunes pass available for months,

I think some people are overestimating the pass. The first week it may have gone to top 10 on itunes, but it started dropping fast and it disappeared from the charts after a couple of weeks.
Maybe when we have the album’s digital numbers we may be able to estimate, but I don’t think that will change much. Regardless, I believe Itunes pre-sales may be bigger than Amazon pre-sales based on past numbers we’ve had in the past.

  • suebrody

BTW, I don’t know if anyone is doing specific Kris promotion, but MIX 104.1, Boston’s HAC station, is doing a big promotion for John Mayer–meet the Mayer of Boston (get it? play on Mayor Menino; not funny, I know). The winner gets a trip to NYC, I think, to meet him. They are also playing his news single. I have yet to hear LLWD (they are also playing Leona Lewis), but I don’t know if they added it or not. If not, I am surprised because they hosted Kris prior to LLWD and also played Heartless a number of times (the studio recording, not the one on KA).

I think both Lewis and Mayer’s album sales will be BIG.

Kris is unpopular winner, as Jordin was. But his CD has more HAC than pop sound. It sells more. So, i would expect him to have sales of first week somewhere between Jordin’s and Cook’s. But also, in my opinion Kris’s record is much weaker than Cook’s was. It sounds very bland to me. Wall of sound.

  • Kirsten

50 hasn’t left the number 1 pre-order album on Itunes since it first came available.

Rap albums open big and 50 cent will probably win the week. But, he’s been doing something different this time around. He released digitally this week and will be releasing CDs next week. So, he will have burned through his iTunes pre-orders this week. People are watching to see how this works out for him.

Meanwhile, Norah never has a presence and always opens big. She can do 400K in the dead of January. John Mayer also always does well. He’s on the top of the AAA chart and that is a chart that can move units.. And don’t count out that Justin kid. He’s got singles all over iTunes and his album only has 7 or 8 songs on it and will be selling for $7.99 (or maybe $6.99). Total impulse buy. Especially to “complete my album” and get the last couple of songs the kids don’t have already at a discount.

It’s so hard to predict this year.

  • seriously

Kris is unpopular winner, as Jordin was. But his CD has more HAC than pop sound. It sells more. So, i would expect him to have sales of first week somewhere between Jordin’s and Cook’s. But also, in my opinion Kris’s record is much weaker than Cook’s was. It sounds very bland to me. Wall of sound.

Season 6 I voted for Blake because Jordin didn’t do it for me. Well since S6 I have completely turned against Blake. Not necessarily because of ADD or HOV but because of his personality. S7 I voted for Cook because he sucked me in with his voice. Season 8 I voted for Kris and while I do think his album is weaker then Cooks I still perfer both there albums to FYE. But Kris is a weaker winner IMO and YMMV.

John Mayer and OneRepublic are both categorized as Rock by iTunes. OneRepublic’s album is not available for preorder, but they have been releasing a song a week, like Carrie. The songs aren’t burning up the overall iTunes chart, but they’ve have been in the top 100 songs. They hold the #1 and 2 spots on the rock songs chart. John Mayer’s single is at #4 on rock. His preorder album is at #2 and 6 on rock, and his last studio album is at #8. OneRepublic’s first album is at #24 rock. JM’s album is at #12 and 34 on the overall album chart. He also has a slew of appearances happening surrounding his album drop, including a live concert broadcast on Tues. night. JM’s last studio album sold 300k its first week.

There is definite interest in both albums. I’ll be shocked if Kris outsells John Mayer the first week, or overall, for these albums. I’m a big fan of Kris, but he’s not the superstar yet that John Mayer already is. One Republic could go either way, I think, since 2nd albums generally seem to be hit or miss successwise for any artist, its been a year since they were in the public consciousness much, and their new single isn’t a megahit at this point. I do think that Jive’s strategy with releasing Kris’s album the same week as their’s is to capitalize on fans of JM and OneRepublic also deciding to pick up Kris’s album when they’re buying albums already. David Cook fans assume that that why he was paired with Nickelback last year, and it seemed to work. Hopefully it will give Kris a boost too.

  • Truthiness

. They are concentrating on album sales right now. They’ve got a good handle on how many pre-orders are already there for the album.

How are they concentrating on album sales? By totally not promoting the single and doing absolutely no promotion of the single or album before 11/22?

It’s not like going out and doing radio promotions and working on getting radio play the two weeks before the album drops, hurts the album. The only thing it does is raise awareness of Adam’s music, his single and his album coming up for sale soon.

So yes, maybe they have good handle on pre-orders, but there is no reason not to try and increase the album sales, by increasing awareness of the single or album. If they think they have a good base for one group. Groovy, but imagine selling more singles and possibly albums, if they promoted them both more. Because right now the spins and audience impressions for FYE are very low, so unless you’re a fan of Adam’s, you’re not going to really know he has a single out there, and so, won’t buy it. Because nothing promoting the single gets in the way of album sales, it just increases the chances of the album doing better.

There is no good reason that I’re read yet to not to promote the single before the album drops.

So yes, it’s a risky, unnecessary gamble by RCA in ignoring the single for two weeks and hoping everything after 11/22 will help the album and single sales.

How are they concentrating on album sales? By totally not promoting the single and doing absolutely no promotion of the single or album before 11/22?

Instead of having Adam spend his time doing radio rounds to boost the single, they’re concentrating on creating performances and rehearsing with a live band. These things don’t happen overnight. Adam’s big thing, is PERFORMANCE. If his performance isn’t stellar for the AMA and darn good for the other shows, he’ll lose sales. If his performance is great, they’ll pick up more CD sales. A hit single sells mostly singles to people that don’t already know the artist. Adam’s fan base is very diverse and I’d hazard that most don’t listen to Top 40 radio. The way to reach his existing fan base and the best way to interest new people in him is to do it visually because Adam is as much about his visual performance as he is about his music.

  • Truthiness

So if not expected to win against Mayer or Jones, which we’ll see in a week.

But what number is expected for Kris? 119k like Jordin’s opening? 280k like David’s? I personally do NOT expect Kris to move 280K. But is 119K a reasonable number? Or does the economy get taken into account for his numbers and he adjusted that is 100K?

  • suebrody

I *still* want to know why we heard WYWFM last night on OHP. Is it b/c it’s the next single, it’s a substitute, they just want to drop another single before the album drops, they want to get it ready for the GMAs, or they are just testing the waters? If they are doing a video for FYE, they haven’t given up on it, and I am not in any way hand wringing, but I did expect a little bit more promotion for FYE. I have yet to hear it on our CHR or HAC stations (tho apparently it gets played occasionally–very occasionally–on KISS 108, our CHR station). I do not think a few visible radio interviews (particularly NYC, where they are playing FYE) would be a problem, honestly, BUT I AM NOT QUESTIONING THIS. Doesn’t seem as if the video will be finished before the album drops, which is kind of a bummer. Clearly, RCA is going for the album sales, NOT FYE’s sales.

I think WYWFM is a much better choice for a single. It’s certainly easier to bring to day-time TV, and you don’t need a band. I think you do for FYE. That is what is most interesting to me–where WYWFM lands in the FYE landscape.

ETA: Can you let me know what artist is playing what (e.g., is Monte the drummer? The lead guitarist?)?

Radio play is integral part of a record release. I do not see how you can deny it. Sooner or later RCA has to push radio play for FYE. ITA with Kirsten’s post about ways to sell CD.

Here’s my questions-Do you think Kris’ rollout has been that much better from Jive?

  • erinnthered

Truthiness, I’m sorry, but I really think you need to try and see this from a different perspective. They don’t see things the same way as “the rest of the world.” And yes, they use they phrase. Most of Hollywood could give two shits about some runner up from a reality tv contest, and are not and never will be “fans.” This is their career. For some, it’s nothing more than a job. They don’t think about it at home any more than you think about your job.

AI is not a “big deal” to anyone. The kinds of things that are “big deals” in the industry are the kinds of things that don’t get much of an audience, but speak to the industry. Half the people who work in TV couldn’t name the top 10 shows on the air, and those that they can name, they usually haven’t seen! They may just watch one episode or look up some random facts so they know enough to schmooze with the right person at a party.

Also, Trekkies are not seen as crazy. lol. Saying you’ve seen the OST is totally de rigueur in certain circles after the reboot. STNG though? Totally lame. It’s so stupid, but true!

  • jms

Radio play is integral part of a record release. I do not see how you can deny it. Sooner or later RCA has to push radio play for FYE.

Yes. But maximizing audience impressions of a single song to an audience that is not his core fan base will only sell singles initially. Therefore, it makes sense to maximize sales of the CD for holidays and when you’ve got that all organized, start pushing the single. And if the single starts back tracking on radio plays, step in then. But slow radio growth is still growth and will be what’s needed for long term success. It doesn’t have to happen overnight. Album sales won’t take off to the non core fan base until they’ve heard and liked more than one song.

  • suebrody

I *still* want to know why we heard WYWFM last night on OHP.

I think the DJ just liked it. They can play anything they want on that show.

But he called it the “world debut” and he played it twice. FYE got calls and did not get a spin. Just seemed a bit surprising to me. Not complaining, as I like WYWFM better and it sounded great on the radio, IMO.

  • oceana

Yeah I wouldn’t underestimate Norah Jones, the reviews of her 4th cd look favorable and there seems to be anticipation for it. She sang her new single on Letterman, and I saw her on some show in the last month singing with some other people but I can’t remember what it was, actually I think it was country music she was singing. Anyway I wouldn’t call it “easy listening” music, but she has a lot of fans and sells well, I wouldn’t say she’s off the radar, it just depends which wave length a person is on, there are lots of levels of radar and they often don’t cross each other.

Wiki describes her music as “an adult contemporary vocal jazz [album] with a soul/folk/country tinge” …. which about sums it up I guess, lol.
“She has sold more than 16 million albums in the US, and over 36 million records worldwide; altogether, she has sold more albums than any other female jazz artist during the 2000s.”
    No slouch there, lol.
According to Billboard.com, her new album “appears to be a departure from past offerings, as she will forgo her signature jazz sound and embark on more contemporary rock.”
Her single is already available on itunes, I didn’t realize that.
(“Easy listening” music is also described on wiki.

    1. Adam’s single is FYE.

    2. RCA has not released WWFM as a single and isn’t pushing it for airplay. It was picked and an played on House Party ‘” and they opten pick up album cuts on House Party.

    3. The music video is FYE, AMA is FYE, FYE is the single.

    4. Sony/RCA is very happy with Adam’s sales and I do know people at RCA Records.

    5. Singles do not make money ‘” albums do. Adam is selling Albums ‘” that is a good thing.

    6. MP and WWFM were released for immediate download on AO.com to drive album sales.

i am in the corner that thinks Kris is being underestimated too. His Itunes pass will do VERY well. Look at what he sold for singles. He probably did that well for the pass b/c it was after the win and peeps were excited. Plus, as the tour went through the summer, more peeps got interested and bought it to get more of him. I think he could do better than Cook and way better than Jordin. In addition, he has been pushing his single for 6-7 weeks and done alot of promo. Add to that this week of promos, he will do really well. The underdog story will rise again and he will make headlines.

More like we’ll find out in two weeks if it was.

Wow, I’m sure RCA’s strategy goes beyond the next two weeks. Radio promo may be after the television appearances. As everyone keep saying for the other idols, give them some time.

I also expect Kris to do very well. The Itunes pass will have made a huge difference for those that voted for him in the finale. I expect him to sell between Jordin and Cook’s numbers. Probably closer to Jordin, because I think Cook’s fan base was much larger.

  • happygolucky

I personally think Kris doesn’t have a snowballs chance in he’ll of selling more than Cook. For 2 reasons his album is not as strong and he lacks the fanbase.

  • Truthiness

Instead of having Adam spend his time doing radio rounds to boost the single, they’re concentrating on creating performances and rehearsing with a live band. These things don’t happen overnight.

They don’t happen overnight, but they don’t take all of his time for weeks at a time. Not as if Adam hadn’t done promoting for 2012 in there, so clearly he had the time and energy to do things other than get ready for the AMAs.

Adam’s big thing, is PERFORMANCE. If his performance isn’t stellar for the AMA and darn good for the other shows, he’ll lose sales.

What? So Adam can’t be sold just by his voice, he has to have people see him to buy his music? And again, why make the AMA this make or break performance? Why not cushion that with trying to get radio play and promoting that way first, because none of that gets in the way of the album doing well.

A hit single sells mostly singles to people that don’t already know the artist. Adam’s fan base is very diverse and I’d hazard that most don’t listen to Top 40 radio.

The point is to move beyond Adam’s fanbase, which yes, is what singles do, so if getting singles on Top 40 is needed to move beyond Adam’s base, and it is, then why not promote the single as much as possible to get that needed exposure there? And certainly the song FYE was designed more to Top 40 than seems to be Adam’s base who seem to prefer TfM. So again, why not promote to the radio audience it’s targeted to and get people’s interest with a single? And maybe to an album sale later. This doesn’t just have to be done via visual peformances, unless one really thinks that Adam just doesn’t have a radio friendly voice.

Kris was known by just as many people as Adam and he’s been out promoting his single on the radio, getting spins that way, and started doing live performances starting with Conan on Friday. Granted it won’t be the spectacle of the AMAs, but after the AMAs, there is nothing for Adam that isn’t just like Kris’s lower key TV promotions.

So bottomline, if I understand this argument, is that Adam can’t sell on the radio for his singles or album without a visual performance to start with to people who don’t know him. So because of that, RCA is right to ignore trying to get him radio play for his single, which could expose Adam to audiences who don’t know him and who he needs and is targeting, because instead it will all start and be predicated on one big flashy visual performance. Which Adam needs and can’t sell things without.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com/ CindyM

That would be a Kris Storm scenario. But Kris’ fans are just expecting a Kris Drizzle ‘“ just reasonable expectations.

Fan’s expectations don’t count here, only what everyone else in the world is expecting. Kris is the American Idol winner, I expect he’ll be judged that way. I personally, don’t think he’s going to have a problem.

  • bcr107

That would be a Kris Storm scenario. But Kris’ fans are just expecting a Kris Drizzle ‘“ just reasonable expectations.

lol that basically sums me up. I’ve always maintained Kris is going to duplicate his performance on Idol and be slow and steady with sales…so I don’t expect a big opening week at all. I hope I’m wrong.

  • Trina

Also about Norah Jones, her last album came out in 2007 and her album before that came out 2004, and the one before that 2002 so her being off the publics radar is nothing new and she still sold over 400,000 her first week with the last one. Obviously with the decline in CD’s/economy I think she’s going to sell a lot less but she’s still seen as a huge seller due to her core fanbase.

I think some people are overestimating the pass. The first week it may have gone to top 10 on itunes, but it started dropping fast and it disappeared from the charts after a couple of weeks

Yes THIS. I have no clue what the pass sold the first couple of weeks and it may have sold a ton, but I wouldn’t use it being available for “months” as any barometer. If it was a constant presence in the Top 100 albums, then I would agree, but not when it hasn’t been seen at all.

But what number is expected for Kris? 119k like Jordin’s opening? 280k like David’s? I personally do NOT expect Kris to move 280K. But is 119K a reasonable number? Or does the economy get taken into account for his numbers and he adjusted that is 100K?

For me, even with the decline in the economy I (personally) would be disappointed if he sold Jordin’s numbers or less. He managed to sell more of NB its first week than Jordin did with her coronation single so I’m hoping he can top her even if its not by a whole lot.

The bottom line is we don’t know what’s going on. Truthiness, you have no more knowledge on what is being planned or what they have ADam working on than the next person. No one does. Adam isn’t limited to only visual performances, his voice is stellar. However, no one can deny that he loves the visual aspect of his performances. Adam also seems very hands-on in every aspect of his record, video and presentation. He’s also never been known to be a slacker. Everyone has praised him for his work ethic and involvement. There’s a plan, we don’t know it.

So bottomline, if I understand this argument, is that Adam can’t sell on the radio for his singles or album without a visual performance to start with to people who don’t know him.

No. I’m saying that albums bring more $$$. The best way to sell albums during this holiday season is to find the idol fans and remind them of Performer Adam. Single growth on radio comes after that and is necessary for long term success. But for now they want to get albums sold for the holidays. Growing his audience now, will sell more singles than albums so they will work on that later.

I’m thinking at this point we just have to agree to disagree. So won’t be posting about this again.

edit: but we’ll argue about it anyway

  • suebrody

Thanks, gemini and CindyM. I am going to write down the members of the band for future reference…I still do not know who is in Kris’s band except for Cale and some not particularly good drummer, apparently, per the LLWD performance on Conan.

Maybe we can all agree it will be interesting to see the strategies playing out over the next few weeks, whether or not we feel they are wise. I’m enjoying the education.

LLWD just moved up to #21 on the HAC this afternoon, and #49 on iTunes singles. Kris is holding onto #47 on Top 40 by his fingernails.

  • Eileen99

    Kirsten:

Which formats typically play the most holiday music, and that should be gearing up here shortly, correct? Does this affect adds over the holiday season? Would it be harder to compete for adds until after the holidays are over, or do stations continue to add new songs while mixing in the Christmas stuff?

  • Kirsten

Kris is holding onto #47 on Top 40 by his fingernails.

    Top #37.

Which formats typically play the most holiday music, and that should be gearing up here shortly, correct?

AC is the most dedicated spinner of holiday music and they start the earliest. CAC and Country also do their fair share. HAC and Top 40 should start spinning up soon. It gets more and more concentrated the closer you get to Christmas. It gets tougher to add spins or stations. You just have to hold on and hope that your song is fresh enough and high enough that it gets the surge post Christmas to support your album.

EEEK! No!!! Don’t remind me. I have to turn off the radio completely and stop going to stores to avoid the-little-drummer-boy-that-makes-me-want-to-slit-my-wrists.

More like we’ll find out in two weeks if it was.

Nah. 2 weeks is too early. I guess it depends on what a person sees is important. Slow and steady wins the race to me. There’s no point to opening up big and then dropping off until the next album comes out. I think RCA is handling Adam fine. I’m not concerned at all, and I don’t think there’s any doom in sight. Adam hasn’t started any promotion. It seems like its going to start after the album is out. I have no probs with that, but it sounds like you do. Personally I’d rather have Adam have a long successful career than be a one hit wonder.

I think WYWFM is a much better choice for a single. It’s certainly easier to bring to day-time TV, and you don’t need a band. I think you do for FYE. That is what is most interesting to me’“where WYWFM lands in the FYE landscape.

Personally, I prefer FYE to WYWFM, but I think WYWFM has a better chance at radio play. Especially since its a P!nk song.

So Kris should do better than Jordin’s opening of 119K, so 125K? 150k?

There’s a plan, we don’t know it. Until we do, this has gotten tiring.

And see what I find tiring is people saying there is a plan, and then trying to explain bad numbers as part of that. I find that much more tiring personally. But different strokes and all.

  • BestAI

We don’t know the numbers of Adam’s album sales, but apparently they aren’t too shabby. Otherwise why would RCA invest so much on his band and performance/tour director. So far that we know, Adam has some pretty experienced guys in his band. They don’t come cheap. Then the company/director who is putting together his performances and tour. They are quite reputable and again, not cheap. If Adam’s album sales were dismal, or even mediocre at best, RCA wouldn’t put forth this much revenue in Adam.

I’m not going to set my expectations too high on Adam’s sales, but I’m also not going to sell him short. I think his sales are pretty good even considering his songs haven’t been promoted, and he hasn’t had the airplay (due to no promotion).

  • k0ka

I think the bottom line is RCA is ignoring FYE radio play for now. And it might be a mistake. Though, they have sent the song for adds, so i would assume they want it to be played.

It is not like RCA has only one person that is responsible for everything Adam related. And the person can’t work with radio stations because the person is in AMA rehearsal. :) They have a department to work with radio stations and push radio play for a song.

  • cookcricket

IMO, the iTunes pass was something new and different on itunes, unusual and a little hard to understand. I personally do not think we can count on it to have sold in high quantities after the finale. Perhaps it picked up some sales over the summer when people figured it out.

Someone said it was heavily advertised on the show. Can someone be specific on how this was done? Thanks. :)

  • Eileen99

#37 on Top 40. Yeah, oops, sorry Kris.

So if I understand the Christmas impact, we should start to see adds progressively decline overall as stations make room on their air for the Christmas songs.

    Okey dokey. I’m ready.

  • tinawina

Personally I think RCA is pushing the song behind the scenes, but PDs aren’t biting yet. It would be highly unusual to not push the song at this point. He should be doing a promo blitz in a few weeks anyway, so we’ll see if things pick up then.

I do think they’ll probably rely on his idol notariety to help sell albums through Christmas, and hope the single takes over in January. That said, if the single is going to be in any position to help then, they have to push it now. It has to have some momentum going into the Christmas freeze. So like I said, they are going to push it (and probably already are) IMO.

  • jms

They have a department to work with radio stations and push radio play for a song.

lol true. and given the number of adds that FYE has (32 in two weeks) compared to FIBOY (9 in more than 4 weeks), I suspect that is happening.

  • Izzie2

Personally, I prefer FYE to WYWFM, but I think WYWFM has a better chance at radio play. Especially since its a P!nk song.

I understand your thought process, as WYWFM is 100% a Pink song. But IMO…just wrong to have someone else singing it. I am more than disappointed that so many of the songs on FYE are trying to copy someone else’s sound/vibe. But I guess RCA is trying to sell music….

  • Sassycatz

Instead of having Adam spend his time doing radio rounds to boost the single, they’re concentrating on creating performances and rehearsing with a live band. These things don’t happen overnight.

This is what I’m interested in. Considering all the bells and whistles that this guy may need for a tour, what kind of tour will he have? It’s not just him and a band with a few roadies, I’m guessing. As such, he’ll need venues that can handle “bells and whistles.” He’ll definitely need to hook up with an established artist because going on a solo tour would mean much smaller venues and a lot less personnel and support.

  • girlygirl

I honestly don’t know how either Kris’ or Adam’s albums are going to sell. But I think it’s clear that all these radio interviews, the concerts he’s done, his appearance on Conan and the release of the LLWD music video have earned Kris some new fans outside the Idol bubble. This is the 2nd straight weekend that LLWD has jumped on the iTunes singles chart after some sort of appearance or promotion by Kris. Right now it’s sitting at #49 overall — that’s up by nearly 40 spots from where it was 2 days ago. I am assuming that Adam will get a similar kind of boost once he starts doing his promotional stuff. I do hope that RCA isn’t going to ignore the smaller promotional things like local radio interviews and concerts.

  • Eileen99

Here’s a short radio clip of Kris on AT40 yesterday introducing LLWD. Ryan sets it up that there have been 4 American Idol winners to make the AT40, and they’re about to have a 5th (sounds like he knows LLWD will be on AT40 next week). Kris tells Ryan “Play the dang song”.

This is what I’m interested in. Considering all the bells and whistles that this guy may need for a tour, what kind of tour will he have? It’s not just him and a band with a few roadies, I’m guessing. As such, he’ll need venues that can handle ‘bells and whistles.’ He’ll definitely need to hook up with an established artist because going on a solo tour would mean much smaller venues and a lot less personnel and support.

I also think he’ll be touring with another established act. Especially since RCA just hooked him up with Jamie King who directed/choreographed Madonna’s Sticky/Sweet tour, Britney’s Circus Tour, Rhianna’s 2009/2010 tour, he was nominated for an Emmy for his work with Prince. He’s no slouch. It makes me think that something is and has already been in the works for touring. I’m sure you can’t just call up Jamie King at the drop of a hat and have an arrangement in place that fast. I just wish I knew who he MIGHT be touring with and when.

  • leome

Personally I think RCA is pushing the song behind the scenes

Me too. Most things happen behind the scenes. Those radio interviews we see are nice and all, but that’s not what makes a single a hit and not what makes most stations play a song.
I think it’s possible RCA expected the single to better than it’s doing now, based on Adam’s buzz and the song being dance/pop which is what’s hot now. But it’s been a slow one. And this is the time for it to start climbing fast. The album will need a hit single to keep selling after the first few weeks.
The song had many test spins in the first week, and most of those stations haven’t played it again since then. Why? It didn’t test well? I think it’s possible.

  • Sherena

What does it mean when a song doesn’t test well?

  • gemini1

Kris was known by just as many people as Adam and he’s been out promoting his single on the radio, getting spins that way,

LLWD was at # 77 on the overall charts on the twelth day after it was released to iTunes.

FYE is beating LLWD in overall adds if you compare the first two weeks after release.

FYE and LLWD have similar spin totals if you compare the first two weeks.

Truthiness: How did going around and giving a few radio interviews help LLWD? It wasn’t doing ANY better at two weeks out. Do you have any facts to back up that LLWD was doing that much better than FYE at the two week mark? If not, I guess Jive did a pretty poor job also and those radio gigs didn’t help.

  • HappyDaisy

What does it mean when a song doesn’t test well?

See the thread on the apparent contents of the Adam video. If the music/singing won’t sell it, maybe bare bums will?

ETA: Not a fan of the FYE single. The other three Adam songs I’ve heard so far are much better.

  • tinawina

Sherena, lots of radio stations do their own customer surveys and/or focus group testing for new songs. Its not just all Rate The Music surveys. If the numbers on a song come back terrible, they won’t play it. Of course, there is no way of knowing if that is the case here. It’s still early.

  • anovich

Here’s a short radio clip of Kris on AT40 yesterday introducing LLWD. Ryan sets it up that there have been 4 American Idol winners to make the AT40, and they’re about to have a 5th (sounds like he knows LLWD will be on AT40 next week). Kris tells Ryan ‘Play the dang song’ .

    http://www.box.net/shared/6ckd4xat2u

You don’t need to download ‘“ just hit play.

Yay Kris!!!! This is funny. And isn’t AT40 like 2 weeks behind the charts, so Ryan would know that Kris will be in the 30s in the next few weeks on his show. And this promo is also great because AT40 is played almost everywhere.

  • lovingadam

    Adam FYE, today on amazon.com

    No. 1 in Rock
    No. 6 in Pop
    No. 6 in Bestsellers

  • gemini1

This is the 2nd straight weekend that LLWD has jumped on the iTunes singles chart after some sort of appearance or promotion by Kris. Right now it’s sitting at #49 overall ‘” that’s up by nearly 40 spots from where it was 2 days ago. I am assuming that Adam will get a similar kind of boost once he starts doing his promotional stuff. I do hope that RCA isn’t going to ignore the smaller promotional things like local radio interviews and concerts.

Same answer here. The video and Conan appearance seemed to have a huge effect. Those radio interviews and concerts had him 40 places lower and moving out of the top 40. ( He was down to #145 on Oct. 15.) Then bam! It seems that the video and Target type adds have had the biggest impact thus far. If RCA is doing a bad job, then so did Jive.

  • tinawina

The video and Conan appearance seemed to have a huge effect.

For Cookie last year, he would get a mini ITunes bump every time his video aired on the Vh1 countdown. That happened for both songs.

  • Eileen99

“FYE is beating LLWD in overall adds if you compare the first two weeks after release.”

Gemini – I’ve commented on this statement before, and am not going to debate again except to say you are comparing Kris’ adds before his official add date with Adam’s adds after his official add date. You’re comparing apples and oranges. Very misleading.

  • unique28v

And see what I find tiring is people saying there is a plan, and then trying to explain bad numbers as part of that. I find that much more tiring personally. But different strokes and all.

I don’t think Adam’s numbers are bad. lol I guess that is where people disagree. I don’t think he’s in trouble at all. Its waaay too early to say one way or the other.

  • JohnM

Allison is performing at the KIIS.FM Jingle Jam in LA on December 5!!

It turns out that she apparently won’t be playing the Jingle Ball concert itself — rather, she’ll be playing at a pre-show festival in the afternoon:

    http://www.kiisfm.com/pages/events/jingleball09/village.html

It says “Performance from Allison Iraheta and many more…” Don’t know if that means she’ll be the headliner for the afternoon or she’s just the first one they’ve scheduled — hopefully she’s the headliner. I guess that would make her the big fish in a small pond as opposed to a small fish in the evening concert’s big pond.

  • Truthiness

FYE is beating LLWD in overall adds if you compare the first two weeks after release.

FYE and LLWD have similar spin totals if you compare the first two weeks.

Really? and going to Eileen99′s excellent point, what are the adds for Kris after his offical add date and spins for the first two weeks. And what were Adam’s adds after his offical add date and spins for the first two weeks?

And again, after offical adds to that it’s apples to apples.

  • http://legan0.tripod.com mama2dasha

Is anyone listening to OHP-it’s on now.Any idea if they will play Adam again tonight?

  • ladymadonna

RCA is absolutely working FYE behind the scenes. Major labels don’t send the debut single from their most high-profile debut artist for adds without a team of busy little radio reps on the phone daily to every PM in their territory. I’m not sure why they don’t have Adam making the rounds yet, but I’d be very surprised if that doesn’t kick-in soon. This single has to start building momentum going into the holiday freeze, or January is going to be a scramble.

It’s definitely possible that callout had been weak thus far – an initial flurry of test spins but no subsequent support on those stations is sometimes an indicator that a song is not testing well. But it also could be a lot of other things. It could be that there are too many similar songs in rotation right now, and the palylists just need to clear out a bit before PDs take another look at the song. It could be that the jury is still out on Adam at radio, and stations are waiting for a Big Daddy like Z100 or KIIS-FM to pick it up before they follow suit. This song might just be more of a slow-burner than we expected. Who knows. It’s early.

I checked my notes from last year and it looks like the holiday slow-down really started to hit the week of 11/9, and gradually impacted overall AI until the week of 12/21. David Cook’s total AI dropped by more than 10 million during that period, despite the fact that ‘Light On’ actually managed to grow during the holiday period, though at a much slower rate than it was prior to the freeze. TOML, which was at the top of the AC charts by November, really took a hit – its AI dropped from ~40 million AI before the holidays to less than 4 million by Christmas. Then it rebounded and was back up to almost 30 million AI by the first week of January. So yes, the holiday freeze is real and can be insurmountable for some songs, but it does hit CHR and HAC less than other formats, and I’m certain Jive and RCA are planning for it.

gemim1, ITA with this and with similar posts by jms and CindyM.

And I always enjoy reading your posts, Truthiness, but I think you are dead wrong on this issue. JMO. The single was released only 3 weeks prior to the album and the way it was released makes me think RCA was focusing not just on allbum sales, but on its Collector’s Edition album sales. The subsequent exclusive release of WWFM on AO only strengthens that belief. Adam had a limited amount of time to promote the single before the album drop, no MV to help the single’s sales, TFM promotional work to do and an AMA performance to prepare for – all in three weeks’ time. I really don’t believe – as gemini said – a few radio promotions would have made that much of a difference in the scheme of things.

Adam’s been a busy boy, with his red carpet events, his TFM press obligations, his “hot list” parties, his band selection and AMA planning, not to mention the video shoot that is happening today. Again, we’re talking about three weeks. And during that time, the spins and adds have steadily grown without any promotion from Adam, at a rate that is not that far different from what Kris experienced, with promotion!

I don’t think the incremental difference between the current level of radio play for fye and what that level might have been if radio promotions had been done would have translated into some astronomical number of album sales. I truly believe the AMA performance will have a much greater impact.

ETA: I also believe Adam will begin promoting the single after the AMA’s and the album’s release.

  • erinnthered

I don’t think Truthiness was saying the dude was an Adam fan, but that he must be a moran if he doesn’t know how things work. Unless of course this is his very very first shoot and has never been involved with anything involving any sort of celebrity.

    LMAO!

    No, you don’t understand.

Think about your job, and your politics, and your lifestyle. Then think about those times when you’ve encountered someone who has had no experience with something that is an every day thing for you, and how skewed their view was of what you take for granted. This is you. You have a skewed view of what it’s like in this world.

The only difference between me and that guy is A) he’s getting paid right now, and B) I’m a geek who likes to argue to strangers on the internet…actually, B is a tautology.

Here’s a fact you may not be aware of…the majority of “sets” and “shoots” never see the light of day. Ever. They never get released. Even to DVD. Maybe they see one or two festivals, or screenings, but mostly not even that. If they’re lucky, a small cable network will buy the rights. A huge chunk of the rest never take off. You may have heard of it, but probably forgot it five minutes later. Music videos are a large chunk of both of those types.

These women are not stalkers. They would never be classified as stalkers. Stalkers are mentally ill people who believe they have a relationship with you, and will do whatever they have to do to keep that alive. These women don’t believe they are friends with Adam. They are just entitled, delusional fans.

Never thought the guy was an Adam fan. lol. The guy probably never heard of him before a few weeks ago, and like any other person he encounters with a fanbase, he thought he’d throw out a nugget and see if he could get some love for it.

Most fans tend to be very respectful, and I’m sure this guy thought that Adam was like any other minor celebrity with those dedicated, but respectful fans who would stand there for hours if their guy would just smile at them.

  • SashaB

See the thread on the apparent contents of the Adam video. If the music/singing won’t sell it, maybe bare bums will?

LMAO. Well, it worked for Britney. Why not. Funniest comment I’ve read yet.

And I absolutely believe RCA is working those PDs hard. I agree with Tinawina.

Once again: FYE is beating LLWD in overall adds if you compare the first two weeks after release. It is NOT a misleading statement. In fact, Adam is more than double what Kris’ was. In one week we can compare the three week totals-that will probably be more equal.

Truthiness: How did going around and giving a few radio interviews help LLWD? It wasn’t doing ANY better at two weeks out. how many adds did FYE get the week of its radio release? IIRC, LLWD had about 40, which i thought was unusually high. if FYE did more than that, that’s great.

anyone know adds info. for allison?

I think he could do better than Cook

Yeah, just had to add to the chorus of “um, no” in response to this prediction for Kris. I’m usually a fudger, qualifying everything and never giving an absolute, but for this, I’ll go on record with a “no frickin’ way in hell.” Feel free to feed that back to me if reality proves me wrong. :-)

BTW, to be clear, I expect great things for Adam (eventually), but I would not even predict this for him at this point. Internationally? Maybe. But more than likely (see, there I go… ;-) ) not US.

Make no mistake though, I do fully expect the sales for both to be very good, and very close, with the better first week going to Kris.

  • gemini1

    Truthiness: Apples to Apples-

    LLWD- 1st two weeks(after add date)=39
    FYE- 1st two weeks(after add date)=34

    LLWD- 3rd week(after add date)=9
    FYE-3rd week (after add date)= ?

Also, LLWD’s 1st week was at 32 which actually counted two weeks worth of adds. (one before the add date) So, it’s still not apples to apples because we are comparing 3 weeks to two weeks.

Like I said, I expect FYE and LLWD to be very close in adds come late Tuesday.

    Woohoo… Nice for 2012:

Moviegoers said give us the apocalypse now as Sony’s end-of-the-world epic “2012″ topped the weekend boxoffice with a heaping $65 million in opening domestic coin.

Directed by Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day”), the effects-filled actioner cost $200 million to produce. But with a $225 million worldwide haul from simultaneous openings in 105 foreign territories, the more than 2 1/2-hour tentpole delivered a planetary payout on that investment at the high end of pre-release projections.

“2012″ opened roughly similar to Emmerich’s personal best debut with “The Day After Tomorrow,” which rung up $68.7 million over the first three days of 2004′s four-day Memorial Day weekend en route to registering $186.7 million in total domestic boxoffice. The helmer’s last pic — 2008′s “10,000 B.C.” — bowed with $35.9 million and grossed $94.8 million overall domestically.

Opening audiences for “2012″ skewed 52% male, with 55% of patrons aged 25 or older.

FYE is #47 on HAC now. As it rises do certain stations automatically pick it up when it hits certain chart positions? I’m wondering if there will be some auto adds because it went from in the 50′s to the 40′s.

  • suebrody

Good questions, jms. I have no idea how this goes, but WE WANT TOP 40, FYE. Do it. Get there. (Okay, we will wait till after the AMAs, but only if we really have to. We would rather not.)

Hey, Erinnthered, I’m glad I made you chuckle. :) But I do think I understand what I mean. I live in LA and I work in a service industry that caters to the “stars.” So from my perspective, I can’t imagine anyone living in Los Angeles who works in an industry that deals with celebrities not understanding how things work. If this video was shot in Kansas, I would think your point was valid.

Also, it’s an assumption that the dancer “probably never heard of Adam” until three weeks ago. AI is a huge show, the LA radio stations were talking about Adam. He’s been on covers.

This dancer probably had to audition for the gig. The dancer may run in the same circles as Adam since Adam did stage work in Los Angeles. Too many variables to say where the guy was coming from when he tweeted.

To cut to the chase, you may be 100 percent correct, or I may be, or the truth may be somewhere in the middle. It really doesn’t matter. It’s not that important. It’s just a tweet from a dancer.

  • Hazehel

So Kris should do better than Jordin’s opening of 119K, so 125K? 150k?

I would be very surprised if Kris actually gets more than 100K the first week. Remember that CD sales have declined year by year, and although I don’t have the number, I wouldn’t be surprise it fell by 30% since Jordin’s season (if anyone has the actual number do let us know). As far as I can know, Kris’ No Boundaries and Jordin’s This Is My Now sold about the same number (~270-280K), but when you consider that single downloads have actually increased in the meantime, Kris may not have done as well as Jordin. I have already given my prediction for Kris which is 60-80K, but I hope to be proved wrong because I do like Kris.

BTW, to be clear, I expect great things for Adam (eventually), but I would not even predict this for him at this point. Internationally? Maybe. But more than likely (see, there I go’ ¦ ) not US.

I do see Adam doing much better than David Cook internationally, and possibly better eventually in the US as well if his material is good enough (but I should say that I don’t like most of what I heard from his album so far). I think one very important thing for Adam to do right is to get the right image, and in that regard I think he made a misstep in his choice of CD cover. He can be as outrageous as he likes, but he really needs to present his image with some care. One example to think of is Boy George – his appearance in the 80s was so far from normal but yet somehow he still managed to be mainstream enough to appear in an episode of the TV show The A-Team. He looked strange but not silly (Adam looked a bit silly in that picture), outrageous but unthreatening. He didn’t frighten the horses.

  • JohnM

jms: Oh, also all of Allison’s adds are on Top40 format stations. She doesn’t have any in HAC. Don’t know if this is on purpose by Jive or if her single is that unsuited to the HAC format.

I’d imagine both. I’d think they’re pushing it only to Top 40 because they know it’s not very well-suited to HAC. I don’t expect it to get any HAC adds unless it really catches fire on Top 40.

Hazehel: I would be very surprised if Kris actually gets more than 100K the first week.

Totally agree. The way things are going these days, I think 100K would be great.

I don’t know that it’s particularly unusual – pros have been shooting David and the band throughout the entire tour. Most seem to be independent concert photogs or else they’re on assignment from the local newspaper. You’re right that there have been a lot in this last leg – we’ve seen great shots come out of the Dallas, St. Louis, and Windsor shows just this past week.

If anything I’d guess it’s just Dave picking up a reputation of being a great live show and a great shoot. I know the St. Louis photographer and the Dallas photographer were talking about how good David was to shoot over Twitter – in fact I think the St. Louis guy went to the Pageant show mainly on Rachel’s recommendation. I haven’t seen any indication that these photos have anything to do with 19/RCA (beyond just standard tour PR).

To most of the industry there are normal fans, dangerous stalkers, those weirdos who’ll wait in line for a long time for something, and Wil Wheaton.

LOL, but why you gotta bring poor Wil Wheaton into this?

  • suenigma

I do see Adam doing much better than David Cook internationally, and possibly better eventually in the US as well if his material is good enough (but I should say that I don’t like most of what I heard from his album so far).

OK, this is me just speculating, and I am sure that I will be proven wrong, but I am not convinced that Adam is going to do all that great outside of the US and Canada. What seems cutting edge to us, is in fact just a tired retread of what is already being done in Europe (Tokio Hotel, Muse, Temper Trap, Mika, etc.). Hell, in Europe the second wave of Glam Rock is already long passe. Internationally his take on the genre just really isn’t all that unique – although his vocal skills certainly are. Kelly Clarkson is great, obviously, but she is not exactly outside of the box musically, and she has thus far been the only true international Idol success. She represents true American Pop Rock, and I think that that is partly why she has been embraced. People want their Queens and Bowies from Europe, and their Bruce Springsteens and Britney Spears from the US. Am I totally out to lunch? LOL.

I agree 100%. RCA’s been pretty useless lately, so anything Cook is attracting now is totally about him.

Well…that wasn’t really my point – I have zero concerns about RCA’s support of Cook. I simply meant that the photographers presence didn’t appear to be a part of any special label project. Earlier in the tour there had been one or two dates where a professional camera crew was recording live footage – there was speculation that it was for a live DVD or something but nothing has materialized. I was just saying that I think these recent photos have just been local/independent and not engaged by the label.

  • wellhesback

Damn I wish RCA would put out a live CD from Cookie’s show or a deluxe DCTR before he puts out DCTR # 2. Oh well, if wishes were horses…

In other words, when you’re photogenic, photographers are gonna wanna take your picture? I actually am more excited by the possibility that the professional photographers flocking to Cook concerts are representative of a grassroots word of mouth mini-phenomenon than I would be if we found out it was an RCA sanctioned type thing. Time will tell. I’ll say one thing, it’s not as easy as it looks. I thought DC would come out like gangbusters and quickly sell multiplatinum like Daughtry and Carrie, but I overestimated what would happen. Six months from now, a year from now, three years from now, it will be interesting to see how it all works out for all of them.

    Stop, I can’t take it … arrrr … lol … I wish …

Okay, I found the spin information. FYE has 855 total spins. 386 in HAC and 398 in Pop. (for two weeks)

This is information I found from earlier posts:

“According to Mediabase, LLWD had 92 spins the week ending Sep-24 and 275 spins (148 HAC, 127 POP) the week ending Oct-01.”

“LLWD has yet to hit 200 spins on Pop radio after 2 1/2 weeks.”

Does anyone have the numbers at two weeks for total spins for LLWD to make an “apple to apple” comparison?

    Oct. 19 (numbers for 10/12-10/18)

Kris’s LLWD went for adds last week. It currently gets 799 spins last week (294 in HAC, 496 in Pop, 1 in Active and 8 in Rhythmic)

    Oct 26 (numbers for 10/19-10/25)

Kris’s ‘Live Like We’re Dying’ went for adds two weeks ago and received 1323 spins (HAC:487, Pop:812, Rhy:24).

Therefore, in ts first two weeks after its official add date, LLWD received 2122 total spins.

I think your wrong on this one. Adam is different than Tokio Hotel, Muse, Temper Trap or Mika. Adam can sing a lot more than Glam Rock, he’s one of he most versatile and talented singers alive. One of Adam’s greatest assets is his uniqueness and his refusal to be categorized as one thing. I believe from the day Adam signed with RCA, they had some idea about his appeal to an international audience. For them to bring in some of the best producers, song writers and choreographers in the business to work with him, they have to have a sound reason to do it. RCA is not doing this out of the goodness of their tiny, little, cold hearts, they must have seen some good numbers on his presales. I think the European Market is important, but his biggest seller will be the Asian Market. It’s going to be interesting to see how many albums are sold in Japan and China.

  • soverymel

IMO the fact that Kris’s official add date was weeks after his single was premiered on radio and Adam’s official add date was only a couple days after after his single was premiered on radio makes them apples and oranges.

If you compare their spins chronologically from premiere day, Kris gets the shaft because his song wasn’t up for adds yet.

If you compare them chronologically from official add date, Adam gets the shaft since he only got a few days of radio to play to build up interest.

So while this will of course not stop anyone from comparing because that is what we do here, it’s really not a fair comparison for either of them.

  • leome

This is what I found on pulse for LLWD, 16 days after the premiere (the correspondent to FYE today’s update)

    Total: 373 (+26)
    Pop: 186 (+13)
    HAC: 187 (+13)

    Aud: 3.304 (+0.484)

The number if spins isn’t that different, but there’s a big difference in AI

  • jersey

LOL my head is spinning! Some insist on using add date, some on using premier date. I’m going with soverymel, it’s apples to oranges no matter which you choose. People will always choose the numbers that reflect better on their favorite. Nothing wrong with that! Glass half full and all.

  • leome

Add date or premiere date both reflect better on LLWD, so I’m not sure it matters that much.

I get what you are saying bridgette12, and I hope that it turns out to be true, but honestly it sounds a little like an RCA Press Release. I’m not convinced that the rest of the world will be buying what RCA is trying to sell them. Based on what I have heard of his album thus far, Adam Lambert’s music is not unique, organic and/or cutting edge, sorry. He is an excellent singer, yes, but he is also a very polarizing singer (and I don’t mean because of his lifestyle, I am referring strictly to his voice).

  • Kirsten

Therefore, in ts first two weeks after its official add date, LLWD received 2122 total spins

That doesn’t work. It was available for spins the day it was released, just like FYE. I’m comparing the first two weeks because they were spinning LLWD the first two weeks. How did going around and giving a few radio interviews help LLWD? It wasn’t doing ANY better at two weeks out. Do you have any facts to back up that LLWD was doing that much better than FYE at the two week mark? If not, I guess Jive did a pretty poor job also and those radio gigs didn’t help.

If you want to go back and find out how LLWD after it’s first poor week, go ahead. I just remember that LLWD has had rough start, like FYE with both have different roll-out issues. And that the sales for LLWD were poor for the first week and yes, IIRC, it lost to it’s second week, like -2000 or something like that. And that after that, that the increased spins, and yes as part of that, promotions brought it some gains and last week it had an increase of 40%, IIRC, and it stabalized and wasn’t going into the 100s and had some increases with the MV, had some increases from Conan so that it’s made jumps of like 40 places in the iTunes chart in the past few days. And the spins are going the right way, up. Though perhaps more modestly than before. But it’s building momentum to his album being available in just two days. Oh and EEEEEEE. I’m so excited! I’m peeved I have to do corporate training crap Tuesday and Wednesday so I won’t get to enjoy. Stupid corporations, don’t they realize I need real time Kris fan flailing? If they schedule me for something like that on Adam’s drop date, I’m calling in sick.

Sorry to digress, distracted by my peevement. So yeah, increased radio play, and presumably as part of that, did seem to stabalise LLWD and it’s doing better. Not great, but than neither is FYE. The sales of either suck ass. But I’ve always been one to counsel patience for LLWD, and it seems to be paying off. So I’m find with that for FYE, but I would like to see more effort put to that to help it grow. This is clearly YMMV on the last one.

That doesn’t work. It was available for spins the day it was released, just like FYE.

Add dates are when labels push for songs to be played. Take a look at Daughtry’s new single. It was released with the album, but it got very few spins before it’s add date. Then, suddenly, WHAM! Last week, it got a boatload of adds and very good spincreases.

So, should we state that this new Daughtry single (“Life After You”) has been out since July 14th and is performing badly for a song that has been out for 18 weeks? Or should we say that it’s doing very well for a song that went for adds last week? I would go with the latter.

We can’t compare apples to apples because of the add date. Add dates mean label push. Or at least it does under normal circumstances.

If FYE starts doing better than LLWD at the same number of weeks post add or LLWD starts doing better than FYE at the same number since release, then we can state that one is doing better than the other. Other than that, it’s just WAGS.

I say Kris Allen does better than Leona. I don’t think she’s going to do that well, actually.

While I don’t think Kris will win the week, and I guess somehow this is okay and that it will be okay that it will be okay if he does less than Jodin’s 119K. Which I always thought he would be lucky to make 100K, but I thought was okay, but only for him, it appears.

  • gemini1

There doesn’t have to be a winner here. Although, I’m sure some fans will always want that in varying degrees. The point I was trying to make is that both singles seem to be underperforming from the numbers last year. We’ve discussed the factors contributing(or not) to this decrease to death.
However, LLWD and FYE seem to be performing about the same at two weeks and we can look to LLWD to see that it has taken time and some tv exposure to make it into the top 40. (and the battle has just begun for LLWD) I’m thinking the video and the Sunday newspaper ads have had a huge effect.
I’m just trying to look at comparisons. If FYE is doing badly, then so was LLWD. If RCA sucks, then so does Jive. If it takes time for LLWD, then it will for FYE.

Oh, and wellhesback, the reason I joked that sunchick’s exclamation needed another ‘N’ is because my name is spelled Erinn, with two ‘n’s. j/k :)

We can’t compare apples to apples because of the add date. Add dates mean label push. Or at least it does under normal circumstances.

You mean Jive wasn’t pushing LLWD the first two weeks? But, what about those radio interviews and gigs Kris was doing?
Those first two weeks Kris and Jive were doing promotion. The spins have to make some kind of difference. It was at least a start to help the spins after the add date. We can’t just pretend those two weeks of spins didn’t happen.
At two weeks LLWD had 5 more spins than FYE.(including the extra pre-add week thrown in) At 16 days (where we are at now) FYE is doing better on the iTunes charts than LLWD was.
It still looks pretty equal to me. No one has to win or get screwed by the add dates.

  • Kirsten

However, LLWD and FYE seem to be performing about the same at two weeks and we can look to LLWD to see that it has taken time and some tv exposure to make it into the top 40.

Yes, it does take time. I’ve said that for weeks. Very few songs vault up the charts with four digit increases a week and even then, it takes several weeks to get to the top. What you like to see is that a song has a positive spincrease at a rate that will actually go somewhere. And you need adds to help with that as well.

I don’t recall LLWD getting any TV exposure prior to moving into Top 40 (it did that last weekend). TV exposure should help to move units, but I’m not sure if it will drive airplay (it might increase requests and increased sales might be taken as a sign by program managers that the song is viable. Anything is possible).

Kris didn’t do any gigs in the first two weeks. He didn’t even do very many interviews. He released the song on Z100 on Monday. Did some press in New York and did is album cover shoot. Then, on Friday, he did an interview with Ryan on KISS. The next day he went off to London to record some more of his album and was there for at least a week.

He didn’t start doing radio interviews and gigs until after he got back from London. Kris didn’t finish recording his album until Oct 15th. Then he really started promoting the single in earnest.

That’s why I highlighted the word time in my previous post! I never said it didn’t take time. This is my first year to follow the charts like many other posters on this board.
I do think the video and Sunday ads have helped LLWD jump 40 spots in the last day. I don’t think Conan had that much of an impact.

  • Eileen99

Gemini, I think you are misremembering the timeline between LLWD being played on Z100, and the add date, which ushered in the promo interviews & appearances. After premiering LLWD, Kris flew to London where he was still recording his album. If you go back through the archives you’ll see much handwringing that he was too busy recording to promote the single properly. Go through the headlines threads and you’ll be able to figure out when the interviews and concerts started with Kris. Kris debuted LLWD then basically disappeared off the radar for 2 weeks except for a few twitpics featuring him stumbling across Abbey Road and eating kangaroo.

If you want to compare spins for the two singles which had completely different circumstances surrounding their first couple of weeks following the radio debut, then do it. It seems like an unproductive exercise to me, but go for it. What really matters for both is what happens from here on out. FYE needs more adds and obviously more spins. The few stations it’s being played on aren’t enough, obviously. LLWD also needs more adds to move up the charts further. Both singles need to continue to be worked.

  • erinnthered

Eh, I’d say Conan has a bigger impact than the video. More viewers for Conan – even on a Friday night – than for VH-1. YMMV

  • Eileen99

I see Kirsten and I have basically posted the same comment. And with that, I’m done on this topic, JFC.

Now looking ahead to tomorrow’s adds.

  • Eileen99

I agree with Erinnthered. Conan > VH1. I think it was played only a couple of times this weekend but goes into the regular rotation on VH-1 tomorrow. Kris will be on VH1 next weekend promoting the music video, where I expect it will be featured on the Top 20 countdown. LLWD was also featured on AT40 with Ryan this weekend, where it was the breakout song – I’m sure a whole lot of people heard it this weekend, maybe for the first time.

  • bridgette12

“I get what you are saying bridgette12, and I hope that it turns out to be true, but honestly it sounds a little like an RCA Press Release. I’m not convinced that the rest of the world will be buying what RCA is trying to sell them. Based on what I have heard of his album thus far, Adam Lambert’s music is not unique, organic and/or cutting edge, sorry. He is an excellent singer, yes, but he is also a very polarizing singer (and I don’t mean because of his lifestyle, I am referring strictly to his voice).”

Yes, Adam is polarizing because of both his lifestyle and singing style. Adam don’t need everybody to like him or his music. He just need a very small percentage of the world’s population, to buy his music. I think it’s a matter of opinion whether something is unique, organic or cutting edge, because everybody don’t think alike. The same things that made Adam popular on the show and the tour, will also make him popular with a broader audience. When you see him perform, you don’t forget it, because it’s usually memorable. That’s the main reason I am drawn to him and his music, because his live performances is even better than his recorded performances. I love hs album and can’t wait to see how he rearranges the songs when performing them live.

  • Eileen99

One last comment because I am apparently insane.

    No, nevermind.

Girlygirl – do you have the correct link to that AT40 voting thingie?

  • ilovekrisallen39

I don’t know how to link things, but if you go to i-tunes and Look for Allison’s cd it’s playing snippets of her Album and it has the snippet that Daughtry co-wrote for her album. So you can listen to it. Doesn’t have Adam or Kris’s thou.

    From Los Angeles Times:

You could talk about self-worshiping John Mayer, or you could talk about:
(Irfan Khan / Los Angeles Times)
Cutie pie “American Idol” Kris Allen. Both are releasing albums this week. If you are looking for McSoulful crooning, Mayer is your pre-packaged tugger of heartstrings. If you want something more adventurous, new and not yet full of itself, definitely go with Allen. (Tuesday)

    ETA: deleted per mj’s post.

    Except…

At least that seems to be the case for Allison…although, not much going on there. I’m starting to think they always intended to push her only in the Latin market.

  • Sassycatz

Two of Simon Cowell’s prodigies have new albums this week. ‘X Factor’s’ Leona Lewis releases ‘Echo,’ and ‘American Idol’s’ Kris Allen puts out his self-titled album. Who will win this battle of the talent-show winners?

How in the heck did Kris Allen get to be Simon Cowell’s prodigy? I’m not sure the man has even spoken to Kris since the finale, if even then.

  • tinawina

Perhaps. Conan may be a bigger audience, but its not necessarily a HAC rock music buying audience. The Vh1 countdown crowd may be more target rich for someone like Kris. YMMV.

I guess Jive did a shitty job at first also!

Jive played with the hand they were dealt. Kris had to finish recording the album. You can’t ship an album that’s not finished. Jive knows that it takes a while for a single to get up the chart. They probably wanted the song to have radio support when the album dropped.

RCA chose to drop later. They either don’t feel that radio support is necessary when this album when it drops or they thought the song would climb faster (like a more established artist’s might). Or possibly, they had difficulty choosing a single or the release got tangled up with TfM’s release. Who knows?

I’m not criticizing either label, but I sometimes wonder what they are up to. Jive has chosen to take the more established strategy of single releases, so it’s likely seeing fewer people wondering what they are up to. People can just say, well, that’s what labels do (except for that sneaky Friday release to iTunes for which they received a lot of questioning about because it was not standard procedure).

  • erinnthered

(except for that sneaky Friday release to iTunes for which they received a lot of questioning about because it was not standard procedure)

It crossed my mind that that might have been a sneaky test of the size of Kris’ hard core fanbase. Didn’t we (at mj’s) know about the release date a few days ahead of time? It would be more important to know that than to worry about first week sales, given their strategy.

  • gemini1

Jive played with the hand they were dealt. Kris had to finish recording the album.

I agree. And Adam has been busy, also.

BTW, I truly wasn’t being sarcastic. I am thrilled to hear that RCA is not behind on promotion. It’s good news to me. No sarcasm!

Jive had that weird Friday release, crappy single cover, and didn’t put up a banner. Allison’s roll-out has been strange and a complete failure so far.

RCA has had just as many problems-not to mention the iTunes craziness.

  • CathyMK

So, the Boston Globe finds Kris’s album unadventurous, and the LA Times recommends it as more adventurous than John Mayer, someone who reinvents his style every few years. This is why I don’t usually pay attention to reviews.

One recommends Red Guitar, with Kris’s most heartfelt emotions and metaphorical lyrics, the other likes Alright With Me, a fun pop confection. Sounds to me like an album that has something for everyone.

  • Truthiness

Well let’s try posting this again (stupid network issues)

He didn’t start doing radio interviews and gigs until after he got back from London. Kris didn’t finish recording his album until Oct 15th. Then he really started promoting the single in earnest.

But here’s what strikes me as different about that first lack of promotion for Kris, is that it won’t be the three weeks leading up into his album release on Nov. 17th. The single was dropped and when he had time, Kris started promoting it and he had weeks to do so before his album released. Unlike Kris, Adam wasn’t spending time after his single dropped finishing his album, the album was already wrapped up by that point. The only thing Adam has been slated to do these past few weeks has been 2012 stuff and general Adam stuff. And nothing scheduled to promote the single, but at it’s initial drop.

Anyhew, I know there is nothing any of us can do to change RCA or Jive’s actions, and certainly we probably all know each other’s stances by this part. But this was a new piece of information for me, so it interested me enough to comment on.

Anyhew, like what the LA times had to say about Kris, not so happy with the Boston Globe. And a lot more people out there like Red Guitar than I do. For me, “I Need To Know,” is most quintessentially what I like about Kris Allen. But hey, different strokes n’ all.

Oh and I saw that link on the side of the LA Times about the re-issuing of Space Jam Air Jordans. Man that bring back some good memories. I loved my Bulls in the ’90s. So good. sigh.

    Or even this?

Lots of yummy professional pictures lately, and a great review from Dallas, but seriously David doesn’t have face melting guitar skills. Neal certainly has them in spades, however. David has a face melting voice and eerrmmm ass :D

It’s splitting hairs at this point and ultimately doesn’t matter – a bounce is a bounce regardless of where it comes from. But I have to agree with Tinawina. Based on timing and longevity of the bump I think where LLWD is sitting now is more a result of the VH1 countdown premiere and AT40 than Conan. A Tonight Show bump would have been visible through the night and morning, and would have been shorter-lived. Kris didn’t really start to move on iTunes until after VH1′s Sunday re-run (there’s also one on Tuesday) and Ryan’s show being syndicated out to its 50O+ stations. I think you guys will find VH1 a surprisingly good sales driver – Cook’s singles and album consistently saw a bump every single time either of his videos appeared on the top 20 countdown. I suspect it will be the same for this year’s crew.

Holy crap. I’m supposed to be asleep, and I just got hit with the ginormous time suck that is watching DC’s “banter” videos on YT. Gah!

I forgot how much I liked him as a person. I’d love to hang out with the guy. I just wish his music was more my style.

LOL, not good for Mayer, but nice for Kris. Although I’ll probably pick up Mayer’s album too.

(The link just takes you to the entertainment page. I didn’t see the review)

  • jms

LOL That’s all they had to say about Kris vs. Mayer? Kris wasn’t full of himself yet? Not a reason to buy either IMO. But then they aren’t advising buying either one. They’re just saying if you’re going to talk about one of the guys, talk about Kris. Rolling my eyes here. What’s the point of even putting this on their website?

  • 4Msrmyn

“Alright With Me” is the single I’m stuck on right now. Kris’s live performance of LLWD was outstanding. The way Kris sang it on Conan was sounded better to me than on the one I heard on the internet. I was just stunned. When he was finished I thought “perfect”.

  • jersey

I disagree, jms. They are saying that Kris’ cd is more adventurous and the music isn’t full of itself. Definite dis on Mayer, but comparing Kris in a favorable light to Mayer could never be a bad thing. Mayer sells a ton of music. And the point about putting it on the website is to get hits; which is the reason most things are posted.

  • carmine2008

Can I rant here? Supposedly, Kris’ album will be released on Nov. 17, which is a few hours from now. And yet, I still have no idea if it will be released here in my country (The Philippines) at the same day as it does in the U.S. Darn. I hope I wont have to wait a few days more than the rest of the world — that would be too much.

    Wish me luck tomorrow. :(

Hey, I’ll take it. Kris Drizzle!

  • Mtlfan

yes, comparing Kris in a favorable light to Mayer is quite good.

    Yeah Kris Drizzle!

anyone has a link for this morning Kris interview?

  • cookcricket

Did anyone else here hear Adam’s WDYWFM on Elvis Duran this morning? I was a little unsure of their conclusions. One dj liked the words. One said they definitely liked it better than the “2012 song” and FYI.
They talked about playing it w/o letting folks know who was singing it. It was an interesting conversation. Two women callers called in and both liked it. One said it had an 80′s sound the the dj agreed.

  • 4Msrmyn

cookcricket-I didn’t hear the song, but find the dj comments nice to know. I wonder if Whataya Want From Me might really be the second single from Adam’s album. I looked at the Mediabase spin chart. For Sat. 55 spins and Sun. 20 spins.

  • maturin

So late to the party that the cleaners have left but you guyz! The comments on Cook’s concert photos and paens to his uh, rearview just cracked me up.

And oh my word did I just pontificate on Cook’s ass?

His ass is a thing of beauty to me, and any diminishment thereof would be a tragedy of Global proportions.

I actually can still remember the first time on the tv they did like a 360 revolving camera thing and I was like oooo, that booty. And that was when he was still dressing from his distressing “Last Week’s Laundry” collection.

    *is ashamed* too
