Idol Headlines for 11/14/11

Constantine Maroulis will perform as part of the Williamstown Thetre Festival Gala. More info HERE.

Ryan Seacrest tweeted that he will be premiering a new song from Nikki Reed and Paul McDonald.

Nigel Lythgoe announced the audition cities and dates for So You Think You Can Dance 9 via twitter: Jan. 5 FOX Theatre, Atlanta, GA; Jan. 13 at the McFarlin Memorial Auditorium in Dallas, TX; Jan. 23 at the Manhattan Center in New York, NY, Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City, UT; and Friday, March 2 at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.  They will all go up on  Fox.com/dance soon.

Cute exchange between Idol’s Lauren Alaina and X Factor’s Rachel Crow. Lauren tweets, “@iamrachelcrow just want you to know. I think you’re amazing and my whole family is rooting for you!”  Rachel tweets back, “@LaurenAlaina I just want you to know that i adore you and feel so blessed to have met you. Thank u <3 I want u to come to a show can u?”  Oh…and Rachel tweets, “Simon does the funniest impersonation of @ScottyMcCreery it cracks me up.”

Lauren Alaina performs in the Los Angeles “snow” at the Grove Tree Lighting!

Lauren sang Blue Christmas and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree at the Grove Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Hollywood last night.  Extra’s Mario Lopez was there, so expect at least bits of it to end up on TV.

Jennifer Lopez – Backup Dancer/Boyfriend – All Smiles On Road Trip

TMZ has obtained a photo of Jennifer Lopez with her new BF — and backup dancer — Casper Smart … taken while they were traveling in Europe.

According to our sources, Lopez and Smart spent the first few months as “just friends” — flirting, talking and just hanging out — but lately they’ve been touchy-feely in front of JLo’s other dancers.

We’re told the mood of rehearsals has shifted — she’s a lot more focused on Casper … who is 24. Jennifer is 42.

‘AGT’s’ Daniel Joseph Baker Debuts Fierce Original Song at Yahoo!

Daniel Joseph Baker–or “Daniel Josephine Baker,” or “this generation’s Liberace,” as judge Sharon Osbourne affectionately dubbed him during his tragically all-too-brief run on “America’s Got Talent”–was really the only reason to ever watch “AGT” other than Prince Poppycock. Oh, how I grieved this season on that horrible night when this peacocking piano showman, unabashed Gaga obsessive, and potential Trevor Project posterboy was voted off the show (ironically the same night that Poppycock returned for a guest performance). The Fierceness was gone from “AGT” forever.

Dancing’s Cheryl Burke: Rob Kardashian Is Not Distracted By Kim’s Divorce

Cheryl Burke, a two-time Dancing with the Stars champ, feels a little rusty being in the semifinals. “It’s been a couple seasons since I’ve made it this far, so I have to get used to it again!” she tells TVGuide.com. “But I’m very excited to be back and to have a shot at another final.” Burke and Rob Kardashian will duke it out for a spot in the final — with three dances — against J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff, Ricki Lake and Derek Hough, and Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. “I think it’s going to be close,” Burke says. “J.R.’s gotten amazing scores and he is amazing, but every single week, it changes. I think it could be any of us making the final and I just really hope it’s us.” See what else she has to say about preparing for the semis, doing three dances and if Kardashian really name-drops USC as much as it seems.

‘DWTS’ Contestant Hope Solo: We Have No Game Plan

Dancing with the Stars contestant Hope Solo and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy have come up with a unique strategy for their upcoming dance — they don’t have one.

“We have no game plan,” Hope confessed during a rehearsal last week. “We’re taking it one day at a time.”

The reasoning behind their new improvised method comes from trial and error.

Carrie blogged this morning. She started off talking about Mike growing a mustache for the Predators’s Movember campaign to raise awareness of men’s health issues. She’s donated to Mike’s team and encouraged us to do too. She is NOT a fan of stache, as you can see from the comment she made on Mike’s Movember page:

When can you shave? Your wife would like to kiss you again! You’re looking quite creepy Mr. Fisher!

She also gave an album update. She recorded 3 more songs the week before the CMA Awards to bring the total up to 9 and will record 4-6 more in early December before it’s all in producer Mark Bright’s hands. She’s also doing more writing this week and will write up to the last minute. They are picking out a lead single. She says she’s got some really rocking songs and the album has a lot of tempo so she’s trying to lock in some great ballads.

I was a little more excited when she was using the word “folky” in connection with her album because I really don’t want a bunch of “Undo It”s on the new album. I’m hoping some of the uptempos have got the more acoustic sound she was talking about favoring earlier this year.

Funny thing is, people think Simon has such a “great eye for talent,” yet he would have passed on Scotty. The show was better off without Simon this year.

  • Anonymous

Yeah – don’t understand why anyone thinks Simon is funny when he does that – it’s not an impersonation, it is simply mockery by a petty person.

I think Simon does have a good eye for talent.  Music is subjective and he doesn’t like country music.  Scotty hasn’t proven himself yet anyway.  He was a popular winner in the country market and was bound to sell a lot out of the gate.  It remains to be seen if he can keep selling once the idol win rubs off and another winner is crowned.

  • Anonymous

Wow!  The accolades bestowed on Adam are amazing and he really deserves it after that Queen performance.

  • Anonymous

I think Simon does have a good eye for talent.  Music is subjective and he doesn’t like country music.

Lots of A&R and other label executives have to deal with artists who are genres that don’t appeal to them, but that’s not an excuse to over look talent.  Simon Cowell’s deficiencies in this area are well known, especially in the UK.  He has a long history of ignoring artist who don’t produce the type of music that he likes.  I think that Will Young is the perfect example.

  • ptebwwong

I agree Simon usually has a good eye for talent. But that doesn’t mean he is correct all of the time. He said no to Daughtry at his audition. He did not want Kelly Clarkson in the top 24 & didn’t even remember her. Think about what would’ve happened if Randy & Paula did not say yes to both Daughtry & Kelly. So he has made mistakes.

Scotty’s doing well now. I agree time will tell how well he does. Personally, I think TTWG was a bad single to choose. However, I think if his label makes the right choices for his next singles he could potentially have a few hits off of the album & could get close to platinum which is a feat now. Last year, there was a total of 16 platinum albums or better. So if he could get platinum, it will be great. Also, remember having a great first album does not mean anything. Look at David Cook. Great first album, but his 2nd album hasn’t sold well especially considering he took so much time in between both albums.

  • mmb

Wow. That Irish news article is great

  • ptebwwong

Lots of A&R and other label executives have to deal with artists who are genres that don’t appeal to them, but that’s not an excuse to over look talent.  Simon Cowell’s deficiencies in this area are well known, especially in the UK.  He has a long history of ignoring artist who don’t produce the type of music that he likes.  I think that Will Young is the perfect example.

I agree that Simon does sometimes overlook artists or genres. But I also, think sometimes Simon just doesn’t know what will work. Example: Simon thinks the Stereo Hogzz were great & a band that could be very marketable & unique in America. He forgets that bands & groups usually don’t work well in America unless you’re rock like Coldplay or in country music. There are reasons that a there are few bands or groups in America. They usually don’t work in genres outside of rock or country in America. Countries just have different tastes like the UK still like boy bands. Sometimes I think that Simon doesn’t realize if it hasn’t worked it America for a long period that it won’t work no matter how talented the artists.

It’s like Melanie on XF. Is she good? Yes. But all her song choices that Simon has given her make me think she will not fit in with the current music industry. Pop music is so beat-driven now. Unless Melanie follows Leona Lewis & has a monster hit like “Bleeding Love.” She has a good voice, but she won’t be an Adele. Simon needs to give her less ballad type songs. She needs to start singing some uptempos or she will never be marketable enough for Simon to claim she’s worth 5 million or be a star.

  • Blower

I think i’m the only one who found his Scotty’s impersonation was funny and not a big deal at all.

    This from Scotty McCreery.net fansite.

Scotty is performing for the students of Burlington High School today from about 11:30 to 12:45.

Burlington won the honor by collecting the most toys in a Toys For Tots contest among area high schools, conducted by country radio station FM 106.1. From the area high schools that entered, FM 106.1 confirmed five finalists -  Burlington, South Milwaukee, Kewaskum, Greendale and Waukesha West high schools. The local U.S. Marine Toys For Tots Foundation collected the toys and about one-third of the nearly 10,000 toys came from the Burlington High students.

    Good stuff!

Simon doesnt need to be making fun of Scotty, hes a jealous, petty person Scotty is a great role model for his generation, both kids are, and Simon making fun of him in front of one of is kids is just uncalled for, makes me like the man less and less.
I enjoyed XFactor UK much better, the US XFactor looks like a circus compared to it.

  • Anonymous

yeah I don’t think Simon Cowell has a good eye for talent at all and yes that is long documented.  Even before  idol/x-factor/wherevers got talent this is the man that told Louis Walsh to get rid of the ONLY guy in Westlife that can actually carry a tune!

what simon does have is an eye for the music BUSINESS.  He knows you can make a career out of a decent sob story or that tween girls will lose their minds for a band of pretty boys.

bringing adam into this (because I am a glambert) Simon recognised ROF might scare the bejesus out of some folks (commercial awareness) but never once recognized that it was one of the greatest performances ever from an idol contestant (lack of awareness about actual talent).  He applauded the commercially safe Mad World and eviscerated the bold, original* and truly creative Ring Of Fire!

*please save me the ‘rof was not original, dilanna did it first’ stuff. the musical arangement might have been the starting point, but vocally they are WORLDS apart.

what simon does have is an eye for the music BUSINESS.

I wouldn’t agree with this either.  I want to say that Simon knows pop culture, which is why he’s backing One Direction, even though they aren’t as talented as some other acts from X Factor, but I don’t think that’s totally true either, since he doesn’t seem to understand the culture in the US.

I think Simon realizes what will sell, at least in the short term, but he is not a long term thinker.  He’s also more about molding acts into what he wants them to be (an example would be Lakoda Rayne being told that they should be a country pop group, instead of truly recognizing raw talent and developing it.  If you look at his history as an A&R executive, he had a few legitimate acts, but he also worked with a lot of novelty acts.

I don’t think that anyone in the public knows the real Scotty and Lauren well enough to consider them “role models” (I consider “role models” people who one knows in real life and who are examples for how one conducts their own lives).  I think that both appear to have certain qualities that are admirable and to be respected, but that’s very different from being a “role model”.  I consider looking to any celebrities as “role models” as totally inappropriate, and IMO very misguided to encourage any children to look to celebrites for this purpose.

    bringing adam into this

I don’t take anything that Simon says in his capacity as a judge/mentor seriously.  Simon says a lot of things just because there is a camera in his face, but that doesn’t mean that he is being sincere, or showing how he really feels.  In this capacity, Simon is trying to make sure that certain contestants stay on the show as long as possible, while others leave, which is why StereoHogzz were the best group performing today, and why he took the time to make fun of Paula Abdul saying that Kris Allen isn’t afraid to shop in the women’s department.

Simon’s history in A&R, as well as who and how he has promoted from Pop Idol, and the X Factor speaks volumes about his ability to spot talent, and how he operates as a record executive.

Thanks, Fullmoon, for posting the link to John Kearns’ article.  The phrase that stuck out at me was “androgynous beauty,” because you don’t often see it applied to a man.  Especially by another man.  Or maybe it’s a US thing. We seem more freaked out by androgyny stateside.

Sometimes I think that Simon doesn’t realize if it hasn’t worked it America for a long period that it won’t work no matter how talented the artists.

Simon’s perspective may be influenced because his biggest musical success right now is coming from a boy band that’s actually pretty big in the US right now.  At least, they sell out arenas — even if they aren’t getting any radio play.  They’re called Il Divo.

I can’t for the life of me figure out what the appeal of One Direction is, beyond the hair.  Which, come to think of it, was the major selling point of the Beatles back in 1964.  Maybe we underestimate the power of hair in pop culture.  I don’t think the One Direction will do that well in America, because we’re kind of sticklers for harmony in our vocal groups.  But I don’t think that, just because there haven’t been groups in a while, a vocal group couldn’t catch on.

There were enough fans to fill seats for a Glee tour this last summer.  Judging by itunes sales, the Warblers might have been able to do their own tour.

But, the question, as it is for other Glee actors and AI, X Factor and The Voice alums, is can they separate themselves from the television show, and release original music as themselves that people will support.  The Glee tour is like the AI tour, people will support it because they like the television show.  I also wonder if people would support IL Divo if they were releasing original music.  At this point it’s not like their albums have sold a lot.

IL Divo and Susan Boyle are the type of acts that Simon does well with.  He understands manufactured acts, and he seems to do well with novelty acts, but not real musical acts.

I don’t know the best way to word this, but I don’t think that he could ever launch careers like Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry or Will Young.  Like I said, he is pretty focused on short term success, and has had some of his best work with novelty acts.  I don’t consider what he has done with Il Divo or Susan Boyle as as examples that he knows the music business.  At times it doesn’t seem like that’s his focus.  His focus seems to be on pop culture, and not really developing musical acts.

  • Anonymous

Simon knows the business..Simon doesn’t care whether it’s long term or not.  His focus is on the $$$ they bring in and that can be a huge sum, like in Boyle’s case because she made more than a lot of long term people can.

“Never lets fame get to his head” – how long has he been famous? “Doesn’t party” makes him a better person? Sounds like a dull boy, if you ask me.

But, Simon doesn’t promote her based on her music.  With her, as it is with a lot of his acts, it’s more about the cult of personality, and the music doesn’t come into play.  That’s why I can’t say that he knows the music business.  I wouldn’t put him in the same category as someone who develops musical acts, and really understands musical trends, and not just social trends.

Seriously. This is such a fun vid to watch.  Clearly all were having fun.  Tons of fun and joshing.

Some people aren’t into partying.  Doesn’t make us boring or dull. Trust me on this.

Simon is a jerk, he knows it. Man does he ever know it. But, he plays it to the hilt!!

I actually really like Il Divo. Can.Not Stand. Boyle. She gives me the creeps, and I don’t like her voice. IMHO

Loving the attention Adam is getting in Ireland, and on to the world. Megastar indeed!!!!

Are we talking about Johnny Cash here?… J/K.. :) .. what you said could just describe Adam perfectly .. or Kris’ fans would say you just talk about Kris.
