‘X Factor’: What the ‘American Idol’ Alums Think of Simon Cowell’s New Show

Among the 12 million viewers who are watching The X Factor every week is a select group of people who know better than anyone what the contestants on the freshman series are experiencing: the American Idol alumni, who have gone through a very similar experience themselves. (According to an insider, a few Idol grads even tried out for X Factor year, among them: season 6’s Lakisha Jones and Haley Scarnato and season 7’s David Hernandez.)

What do the Idols like about X Factor and what do they hate? What were their expectations for the new Fox show and what do they think of the judges they know personally, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul? The Hollywood Reporter polled a number of former finalists to see what they thought of the newest talent competition series on the block and discovered that Idols have a wide range of opinions.

Carrie Underwood Gives Advice to Lauren Alaina About Family and Love

If anybody can understand the whirlwind life that Lauren Alaina has been thrown into since her run on ‘American Idol,’ it’s the show’s fourth season winner, country superstar Carrie Underwood. “It’s been really hard because I’m gone away from home all the time,” Alaina tells Taste of Country of her post-’Idol’ life. “I asked Carrie how she handled it.”

“She was like, ‘You know, you just have to remember that they love you no matter what. They’re your family and they’ll always be there for you, and it makes it really special when you get to go back and see them,’” Alaina continues. “It’s very true because when I asked her that, I was just starting out, right after the show had ended. Now when I get to go back and see them, it makes it 10 times better, when you get to see your family and they’re excited to see you.”

Keith Urban To Undergo Throat Surgery

“Keith Urban is set to undergo throat surgery later this month, to remove a polyp which has developed on his vocal chords,” a rep for the country rocker said in a statement to Access Hollywood on Thursday. “The surgery, an out-patient procedure, while minor, will require complete voice rest followed by an undetermined period of recuperation that will require the postponement of the ‘All For The Hall’ benefit concert.”

“Although Urban has had to substantially scale back his appearances requiring multiple songs, he will be honoring his pre-existing one-song performance commitments leading up to his procedure at the end of this month,” the rep’s statement continued. “All other appearances will be rescheduled in the new year.”

‘X Factor’s’ Stacy Francis: Perez Hilton Has Teamed Up With My Abusive Ex Against Me

“It hurts my feelings, because it’s a lot of lies he’s writing,” Francis tells The Hollywood Reporter after Wednesday night’s performance show.

“And I also found out that my ex-husband was tweeting him,” she continues. “And he’s the one that gave him a couple pictures of me and the fake CD that he put up that pretended I had a CD out — I never did; it was a demo. He’s getting all this stuff from my ex-husband and that was my abuser so it’s very disappointing.”

Kelly Clarkson ‘Stalking’ Adele For A Duet

“I always think it’s healthy to have a lot of stuff out there, and there’s room for everybody, because everybody is so different, especially all the women right now in the industry,” Clarkson told MTV News. “We’re all very different from each other, which I think is good. It keeps it not boring.”

We have to agree: The “Mr. Know It All” singer is anything but boring, recently telling the U.K.’s Guardian: “I want to punch Adele in the face! She is just too good.”

THREE OAKS – Matt Giraud laughs as he begins to dispel a bit of “American Idol” lore.

Giraud, who finished fifth during Season 8 of the popular Fox television show, auditioned on a whim in Louisville after traveling there to offer a friend moral support – or so the story goes.

“Well, I actually was going for myself, too,” Giraud says by telephone from his home in Kalamazoo. “I know it would be a more interesting story if I was just going for a friend, but when I found out they were going I asked if I could come along, too. I planned to audition all along, and I ended up making it through.”

Melanie Amaro Calls Simon Cowell a ‘Big Teddy Bear’

Melanie Amaro saw the less-than-warm and fuzzy side of Simon Cowell when he initially told her she would not be moving forward on The X Factor, a decision he quickly reversed and apologized for.

But she’s seen his soft side, too.

“On camera, he’s like this big tough guy, but when the cameras come off, he’s a big teddy bear,” she tells PEOPLE of her mentor, 52. “He’s so sweet and he’s loving and he’s hugging and he’s kissing. And he’s just like, ‘You’re awesome!’ ”
