McCain is winning as ‘SNL’ host

John McCain wasn’t as much of a draw as his running mate Sarah Palin, but his appearance on last night’s Saturday Night Live still helped the late-night show soar to new heights. The installment that featured a special appearance by McCain and his wife Cindy à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ along with Tina Fey as Palin and host Ben Affleck à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ averaged a 9.0 rating/20 share in 56 local markets metered by Nielsen. That’s the second-highest performance in overnights for SNL since December 1997, second only to Palin’s appearance on Oct. 18 (10.7/24) which featured Josh Brolin as host. Last night’s telecast opened with McCain and Fey’s Palin hosting an infomercial for QVC. Unlike Palin’s appearance from two weeks back, McCain made a lot more jokes at his own expense, as well as his competitor’s. American Idol winner David Cook was the night’s musical guest.

Rock and Comedy show goes on despite rain

Blackanthem Military News – Bo Bice and his band start their set in the FOB Delta MWR Theater Room in Halloween masks.

FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA, Iraq – Soldiers on this FOB who braved the rain and mud were treated Halloween evening to tunes and laughs.

Bo Bice, best known from season four of “American Idol,” and Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling, best known from “The Howard Stern Show,” are touring Iraq as the “Rock and Comedy Tour” sponsored by Stars for Stripes.

Bice echoed the sentiment. After being “raised Marine” – his father and brother were both in the Marine Corps – Bice also struck up a friendship with the widow and daughter of Staff Sgt. Jimmy Arroyave, a Marine who died in Iraq.

The mother had taken her daughter to an American Idol concert and wrote Bice a letter saying his music had helped her get through her father’s death. Bice said he called them to say thank you, and after they spoke a few times the mother and daughter sent him a bear made out of Arroyave’s uniform.

Bice said he kept the bear in his studio while recording the song “American Blood,” which he dedicated to service members who have died in the war on terror.

“This is a life-changing experience,” said Bice, introducing the song. Currently on his second tour for deployed troops, he said he’d come back as often as he’s allowed. “I can’t wait to come back next year.”

Review: Carrie Underwood at the Erwin Center

Elvis and Priscilla were there. Betty Boop and Marilyn Monroe, too. I even saw a few dozen Tony Romos. Carrie Underwoodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Halloween night concert at the Frank Erwin Center brought out more characters than an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ audition.

There may have been more costumes than cowboy hats in the audience, but à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢sà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ country queen stayed true to form. Her powerhouse pipes were spectacular and her dazzling stage presence could be felt all the way up to the top row of the mezzanine.

Carrie Underwood will perform at the Pan Am center at 7:30 p.m. tonight. The popular country quartet Little Big Town will be the opening act.

You may remember Carrie Underwood from the fourth season of American Idol. After winning over some pretty rough competition, Underwood proceeded to become a multi-platinum selling artist and has won three Grammy awards, as well. She’s had several number-one hits on the Billboard Country Charts, including “Before He Cheats,” “Jesus Take the Wheel” and “Wasted” (all from her first album Some Hearts). Her current single, “Just a Dream,” is #21 on the Billboard Country Charts.

Reba, Kelly mesh talent at concert

On Friday, the Bryce Jordan Center hosted two generations of superstars.

Billed as simply “Reba + Kelly” for their “2 Worlds, 2 Voices” tour, country legend Reba McEntire and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson performed a two-hour set of duets on Halloween, trading verses and teaming up for the choruses on most of the songs. They played an almost equal selection of songs from both of their catalogs.

The combination of Clarkson’s technical ability and McEntire’s emotional performance made for a surprisingly good show, though it was already clear Clarkson is a step above her American Idol peers.

Mourners celebrate lives of slain Hudson relatives

Mourners in Jennifer Hudson’s childhood church Sunday listened as the second-grade teacher of the entertainer’s slain nephew read aloud from journals written by his classmates à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ including one who lamented that Julian King didn’t live long enough to become president.

With three of Julian’s classmates standing by her side, Carmen Williams of Gunsaulus Scholastic Academy remembered the 7-year-old as a smart boy who liked to tell knock-knock jokes.

“When Julian raised his hand, he had that enthusiastic light in his eyes, and he always à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ always à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ had the right answer,” Williams said.

Crime scene too much for Jennifer Hudson

As Jennifer Hudson stayed sequestered in her grief Sunday night and other family members attended a memorial service for three murdered relatives at her childhood church, New York friends told us Hudson has not been able to go inside the home where the tragic killings took place.

AMERICAN IDOL – COWELL EYES POLITICAL MOVE

AMERICAN IDOL judge SIMON COWELL has been so inspired by the theatrics of the U.S. election campaign, he plans to change the way British politics is covered.

The music mogul has been fascinated by the lead up to Tuesday’s (04Nov08) vote, admitting that Americans have a talent for bringing glamour to politics and making high-brow debates accessible to the public.
And Cowell is determined to change the way political messages are delivered in the U.K. – insisting he could create a TV show to help revitalise Britain’s “tedious” political culture and lure a new generation of voters to the ballot boxes.

Yes. That’s just what the UK political process needs. Simon Cowell telling one contestant that he’s not prime ministerial enough because he looks like a bush baby while telling the female candiate to lose weight. As for the debates? He’s seen better points made over beers in a Bulgarian Biker Bar.

Does Simon Cowell do his homework? Despite all the glamour, the US voter turnout in the last presidential election was 56.69%. It hasn’t been above 60% since 1968. In 1996, it actually dipped below 50%. The UK has dismal voter turnout, but it’s generally batting better than 60%. I would be surprised if the voter/viewer ratio on AI is that great either. I guess the one “improvement” he could offer is to let people vote as many times as they like.

Voting in developed nations needs some kind of kick in the pants, but I’m pretty sure Simon’s efforts would have results more in line with a kick in another part of the anatomy.

(theres some bits about jason in there too)

    heres some snippets:

“I don’t take anything personally, unless it’s about my family,” he said. “But how long are they? Like, how many pages?” See? Even he’s concerned about the amount of paper it’ll take to print the booklet! “My problem is, it’s either one line or, like, 300 pages,” Archuleta continued. “I completely ramble, even in my interviews or just explaining things. And I didn’t want to forget anyone! Gives you something to talk about, I guess.”

Turns out Archie had to turn in his Thank Yous before all the songs were finished. Hence, the omission of JC Chasez’s name. “It was, like, so last-minute,” he said. “We wrote that song a few days before the final deadline.”

What else can we tell you? His favorite song on the new Cook album is “Life on The Moon”

But as we were leaving, Archuleta yelled out one final thought: “Hope you like the album! I don’t mind if you make any little critiques, I understand the job.”

So there ya have it, Archie fans. A little liner-notes follow-up to show there’s no hard feelings…right?

Aww, see, it wasn’t just wishful fan thinking– Archie was thinking DC would make it into a skit that would work the AI angle as well! The SNL folks really missed out not using DC, IMO.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

OT, I know and I apologize. But I am watching this week’s AI Rewind. They are cutting the contestants down from 12 to 6 in this episode. I just want to say that I am really sorry they have chosen to mash these episodes together the way they have. So much is being cut out and although I thought this wasn’t one of my favorite seasons, I’m finding I really enjoyed much more of it than I had remembered. I wish they were doing the whole rewind. They even edited Jennifer’s “Circle of Life” performance and I remember getting goosebumps over that. Such a shame.

  • gingerly

I actually think Cook was better served distancing himself from AI. I think if that angle was played up or if he was introduced as “the American Idol” lots of channels would have been turned. I know it was played up in the commercials, but who really pays attention to commercials unless you are looking for something specific? I’m delighted at the number of comments on the EW site indicating that they didn’t know he won American Idol and they thought only pop singers won.

While it could have been very funny (and lord knows, that episode was in need of funny), I’m happy the way it turned out.

I think if that angle was played up or if he was introduced as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“the American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ lots of channels would have been turned.

I agree completely, and was thrilled that his introduction was simply, Ladies and Gentlemen, David Cook, with no AI tag in sight, allowing viewers to give him a chance. On the other hand, I also think SOO highly of DC’s incredible ability to charm that I feel that perhaps a brief little skit highlighting his wit and humor after viewers already saw the first performance might help him make a deeper impression– kind of like, the progression of I wonder who this doof is and he sounds pretty good, to, oh, wait, he won AI and he’s funny/witty/charming/not-a-douche? To: let me listen more closely to his second song: WOW, this guy’s awesome, I should check out his music!

This might be just my own imagination going wild/wishful thinking, but I mean, it seems there were those impressed enough to Google him after SNL to find out he was on AI, but I’m sure there were more who were impressed with him, but didn’t remember to look up David Cook after the show, and having a funny skit could’ve helped them remember DC better. I dunno, these points are all moot, I know, but at the end of the day, I’m just glad the boys rocked the house and seemed to make a good impression overall!

  • caringgirl

Aww the part about archie saying hes weird. There is nothing weird about Archie at all. If there were more kids like him at 17 this world would be a better place, IMO!!

Now , Im off to listen to the cookie snippets of the cd again.

  • gingerly

One of the best things about Archie (and come to think of it about Cook) is that they totally know who they are. They don’t apologize and they do find humor in themselves. For Archie, as Cook has referenced so many times, that’s particularly awesome. He’s only 17 and can be self-depreciating about himself. He doesn’t think less of himself but knows who he is and can find the humor in it. May we all be so lucky at twice his age.

While I’d have loved to see Cook in a skit, I’m hoping he will get another go at SNL and be able to do one then. Had he done a skit with Archie in it, well it would have not been funny for everybody. Enough said.

  • soundscene

Some more love for Archie and Crush:

Make no mistake, American Idol is a schlock factory, musically. But when the show gets it rightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ i.e., when the artists that launch careers off it are melded with the right materialà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ it’s so, so right. Case in point: David Archuleta’s Crush, his debut single that conjures up irresistible hooks not heard since the days of ’80s power ballads gone by. Cougars of the world (and everyone else): Give in, put it on repeat and start crushing already.

  • ShariG

Love Cook’s comment about winning the Lottery of Life. LOL It has been a magical year for him, no doubt. I am hoping that he comes back to SNL as the host one of these days. He would be great.
