I know there are alot of upcoming Idol related Jingle Balls/Xmas concerts, but this should be a fun one for Florida fans. Kris Allen, Leona Lewis, Jason Castro and The Fray.

For Underwood, there’s no holding back on ‘Play On’

Here’s an excerpt:

“I wanted to get out of my comfort zone,” Underwood says. So she took familiar Nashville co-writers and added outside influences such as Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, fellow Oklahoman Zac Maloy (who once fronted the rock band The Nixons), Canadian singer/songwriter Chantal Kreziazuk and her husband, Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida.

“I’d take some other small element and bring it into our world to see what we could do with it,” Underwood says. “Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t, but I think it ended up being different and progressive.”

The pressure to match previous successes, she says, came with her second album, 2007′s Carnival Ride. “Everybody was cautious,” she says. “We took a step forward, but we weren’t trying anything crazy, right?”

Underwood doesn’t get too crazy on Play On, though she did cut a remarkably country-sounding track with Swedish producer Max Martin, known for his work with pop divas Britney Spears, Pink and Kelly Clarkson.

All indications are that Carrie’s new album will have a great first week. It is strong on all the retailer preorder charts — even some places where Country albums don’t do very well.

I’m really excited about Adam performing at the Steven Spielberg fundraiser. Great exposure to some big wigs and he will show a different side from the AI Adam.

It was filmed the day before the Tour ended, and you could see how tired they were and enthused. And I am going to say no with Pyro for FYE, but there will be a gazillion dancers. ;)

Wow, I would have ordered tix the *second* they became available for the Florida XMas Ball. The one in Boston (Worcester) is lame. Kris will be there, yes, but no one else I am interested in seeing (including Jordin, who bores me).

I don’t think this will be true for too much longer. FYE is getting radio play today and officially gets adds tomorrow. Also, just cruising radio station websites finds FYE listed here and there and 96.7 in Austin has a big banner in their Music on Demand section. I also noticed Allison’s single listed below. That made me smile.

Other articles re the ADL event have mentioned that Adam will be singing the national anthem. I know the hope is for Adam and Noa to sing “The Prayer”, their version being one of the most beautiful I’ve ever heard.

Mollee bugs the hell out of me, but I know she already has a large fanbase (of tweens/teens?). That’s why I didn’t pull it out onto the front page. It was filled with stale, stale news. Nearly all the collaborators Kris namechecked didn’t make it onto the album. And all that talk about tour, at this point, is worthless.

I realize it is a huge honor for adam to be invited to perform at the ADL event, but he won’t be promoting his single. So far, he only has two gigs scheduled to promote FYE. How is he going to sell the single if that is all he has, and those aren’t even scheduled for three weeks from now.

David Cook did perform in some “Jingle Ball” concerts last year, about 3, I thin k, as did Archie. Another uber-fan will probably have the precise number. One was acoustic. Another there was birthday cake for David and Neal and Andrew came out in a Santa suit. Guys were weaing elf hats. fun times. and I think Cook met Ryan Star through one of these.

Ashley Tisdale is Jewish and has performed in Z100′s Jingle Ball. I think there are a number of artists/bands who have performed at Jingle Balls because it’s not seen/billed as a Christmas event, but more of a Holiday one.

Yes, DC did performed at the WCNI Jingle Ball last year. He also did Miracle on Peachtree for Q100 in Atlanta. Kelly has done them as well as has Carrie.

sue, I realize performing at the AMA’s is huge, but that’s not for another three weeks. Since they’ve decided not to promote TfM at all, I would assume it was for the purpose to promote FYE. So far, we have not heard anything else scheduled, especially since it goes for sale, possibly tomorrow.

I believe Archie did more than 10 Jingle Balls last holiday season. At least over the past few years it does seem that Jive uses them for Idol promo more than RCA. Cook did these three:

I think it kinda of is more of a Jive thing than RCA. RCA artist also do Jingle Balls, but Jive artist do lots of them. I think Cook did like 3 last year, and Archie more than 10. Jordin also does lots of them. Daughtry not so much. So yeah, my guess is that the two labels do it different.

I don’t think its a huge deal if Adam doesn’t do these Jingle Balls. DC did maybe 2 or 3 last year, nowhere the amount Kris has planned and he still did fine with album sales. I remember Kat and Bo Bice doing a bunch of those types of shows and it obviously didn’t help them. Jive seems to be huge on them right now though. He’s got more of these planned than actual national promo which I’m not all that enthused about.

None of these shows Kris has planned are happening like right now. RCA is probably going to ramp up airplay for Adam behind the scenes. Light On didn’t really have any airplay when it went on sale on iTunes either.

mmb, I hope so. I was disappointed when they decided not to promote TfM. As it was, the song leaked from Europe, got two short segments on ET, then zilch. I’m sure they will be treating FYE differently, but that doesn’t mean I’m not worried. They sure don’t believe in giving us much info on the happenins’ with Adam. BTW, mmb, you should join us on Planet Fierce when you have a little time.

I really think that Adam has an exclusive with the AMAs in regards to performing his debut single, hence I don’t think that there will be much out there for 3 weeks. And if you look at it context wise, Kris has only done a couple of small concerts, so far, and not much else in the way of visible Promotion (radio interviews being the exception) and hasn’t his single been out for more than a month.

Based on what I have gathered from going to radio sites this morning Adam is getting a bunch of ADVERTISING for his new single…and from what little “streaming” I do I’ve heard the DJs talking about his new song. This is a real nice, slow but steady, way to introduce him outside of the AI bubble.

I think for Kris, Adam, and Ali that the majority of the Promo will be as their album drops….if you “show and tell” to early the audience will get confused if the album isn’t there for them to purchase.

It doesn’t make any sense to promote the lead-off single now, when they’ll be promoting BOTH the single and the album in a few weeks. (Aside- just because Adam isn’t out performing it everywhere, doesn’t mean it isn’t currently being promoted/pushed for radioplay) From what I’ve seen, when most artists drop lead off singles, and there’s a big radio push to get airplay right away, but they don’t make the major TV rounds performing the single until the week of the album drop. I know there are some exceptions when the single itself is debuted on TV, rather than on the radio, but even then, it’s usually just that one TV performance debuting the single, and then the rest of the talk show rounds are saved for the week of their album drop… that’s what I’ve observed anyway.

Since I can’t make the edit function work, I’ll add that, as many times as it has been said, TfM wasn’t recorded to promote Adam other than in an oblique manner. It was always all about the movie and the release of the single and the video was more of a “gift” to Adam’s fan base. Unless the demand escalates when the movie premiers in 2 weeks the song will just be another Track on the album and will probably not be issued for adds to the radio station. Sony and columbia pictures who forked over the cost for the song and the video don’t seem to be too worried about re-couping their money (and, as a session singer, Adam’s money isn’t on the line) because they blasted the video all over the net and are now giving it away on I-tunes.

Just re-read this quote again from Brian Mansfield’s article. You know, Carrie, that’s nice that you think you guys sound great together, “point blank”, but that’s not really news to the fans that read fan reports, saw you two singing GYOW, etc. Tell us something we don’t know, like why did y’all pick VH, and why that song? Wow. I think the falling off the wagon was actually drinking the milkshake with Oreo cookie bits. Which I can kind of understand since she’s got a ton of promo to do in the next few weeks and, as the article said, she’s got a lot of dresses she’s got to continue to fit into. She’s slim but she doesn’t look like she’s starving to me.

I just want to say that I don’t think anyone should worry about Adam not doing Jingle Balls. They are very much marketed towards the tween/younger teen age group and I don’t think they are going for that with Adam. He is edgier than that obviously. My 14 year old niece went to the last few jingle balls in NYC and told me this year she isn’t going b/c she has “outgrown” that music. She is getting more into classic rock and indie rock and BTW is a big Adam fan. So I think its merely a matter of positioning. I for one am glad he is not doing Jingle Ball because I see it as very young and poppy and would not really help him get the audience that he wants. As always, JMO.

Since Carrie Underwood is now traveling overseas (was in Singapore today/yesterday (date line makes things hazy) promoting her new album for radio play, I was wondering who from the country music/cross over scene is BIG outside of the US. Do any country artists play to big crowds in large venues, and does their music get big play? Or is there a “country music” crowd that has developed in Asia and Europe?

I find this really, really interesting and haven’t found much info on this through google (but I’ll keep looking). I know at one point there was a cowboy hat wearin’ shit kickin’ mini culture in Japan, but anywhere else?

And last year when DC’s album dropped, she went to WalMart in her pajamas to pick up a copy at midnight. She apparently wrote a blog to her fans mentioning his album drop, too. Hee.

I don’t know about Asia, but I think in Europe no country star is big. Taylor Swift is getting airplay now, but far from being able to large venues.
I’d say Shania Twain was the country star with the biggest impact in Europe.
I wish all the best to Carrie, but after listening to her album I just don’t see it being played in Europe.

Why would his management book him to perform for a group of listeners in one radio market at a time when millions of people will see him on the AMAs? They wouldn’t, because as long as he continues getting the kind of offers he’s getting, they won’t fill his schedule up with things that will get minimal exposure. I could see if they wanted to repay a favor to KIIS in LA for example, but otherwise, no need. Between TV, magazines and RCA pushing for radio airplay, Adam will have plenty of exposure.

I follow both of them pretty religiously, obviously David more, and while I knew they were chummy I never knew they were this close lol. I do remember thinking after reading her blog she wrote after his brothers death they might have been closer than I realized. I know there were a couple of reports that they stayed pretty close together while in Disney for the AI Experience thing and he always called her his greatest mentor. Really sweet. I suspect they grew closer over time. This business is rough so I’m glad he had her to lean on his first year in.

I looked it up. Archie performed at 11 Jingle Balls. He also performed at the Holiday of Hope Tree Lighting ceremony and the Cedars-Sinai Road To A Cure Gala. Not to mention the appearances at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and DisneyWorld Christmas Parade.

Just to correct the impression that Jingle balls are always geared towards teens. That’s not true. It depends on the venue used. If held in House of Blues the audience trends much older and the line-up will be much different than those marketed to teens. The line up for one of David Cook’s Jingle Ball’s last year was Colbie Caillat, Natasha Bedingfield, and Gavin DeGraw.

For the WNCI Jingle Ball in Columbus, Ohio, the Rock band “Staind” played after David Cook. Cook performed Hunger Strike (with Andy Skib), Mr. Sensitive, Barbasol, Life on the Moon, Heroes, and Permanent. That’s not what you’d call Disney-like, teeny-bopper fare.

The AMAs won’t get him airplay. And almost everyone does those Jingle Balls. Lady Gaga was all over them last year. No one is bigger than them, especially a new artist like Adam who wants airplay.

I think Adam will end up doing these types of promotions. He may already be lined up for some, we just haven’t heard about them yet. Jingle Balls have really established artists performing at them, as well as, newbies like Kris and Adam. I think the AMA’s performance of FYE is limiting some of those venues, but most of them seem to be in December, so I’m sure we’ll hear announcements soon.

AMA is good and all that. But radio is still important to introduce songs to music buyers. In one of AMA producer’s video blog, even he said more radio airplay leads to more sales. It’s just simple statistics. So Adam still needs to work with radio stations, region by region to expand his fanbase. Also AMA or gig as big happens like only once a year, while radio spins impact in a daily if not hourly base. AMA may push FYE up in the chart, but Adam needs airplay and radio AI to sustain the position.

Count me among those very anxious (but not worried) to find out about what future promo Adam has in store. It makes sense with the AMA thing that he isn’t performing the single before then. I can see him speaking at some top market radio stations in the next week or so. But then, I’m hoping the big push (similar to Kris) is with more national coverage on talk shows. The Thanksgiving timing does make it a little more difficult to schedule appearances, especially in the few days right after the album release date (talk shows on vacaction, etc.) But hopefully there are some good plans in the works that we just don’t know about.

Ideal situation would have Adam’s TV media blitz ramp up the week before the album release, but that would trample on a lot of Kris promo, and it may not work, schedule-wise.

Well, according to some, doing Jingle Balls is the modern equivalent of the now illegal payola. Labels can no longer pay radio station (legally) to play certain artist’s songs but labels can definitely scratch the radio station’s back by having their artists play (for free) at these Jingle Balls, in exchange for the radio station being, shall we say, open to playing that particular artist’s songs.

So, with regard to Adam, I think we know he can get air time on entertainment shows and basically get the 19 machine to promote him on TV, but so far, he is still unproven on the radio and RCA may decide that they will use the radio station Jingle Balls to promote him to the largest markets or the markets where he may need more support. Either way, if it’s good enough for the likes of Alicia Keys and Kanye (who were doing Jingle Balls last year), it’s probably good enough for Adam.

Jingle Bells are also good ways for singers/bands to polish their act and for a new band to get used to performing together before hitting their “real” concert tour. And as somebody said earlier, the networking can pay off–that’s how Ryan Starr ended up opening for DC.

This is not a “Jingle Ball,” though it is sponsored by a radio station (WXLO, Fitchburg, MA. It’s the “XLO Acoustic Christmas Concert.” It doesn’t seem to be aimed at teens.

Boston’s Kiss108 has the Jingle Ball (with Jordin and 5 other acts so far). I’m sure the info is on their website. Kris or other acts could be added to this show, I think they sometimes add acts as showtime nears. The thing is, I don’t know if LLWD has been added to that station’s playlist or not, and wouldn’t that influence the booking?

As for Adam not needing Jingle Balls, people like John Mayer and other big names play these Balls, so I don’t think it’s a question of being too big or famous. Adam’s people might have something else in mind, though — or he may end up being added to the lists, also. If nothing else, I think he would probably have fun on twitter with the name “Jingle Balls.” lol

Concert review…

David Archuleta And Demi Lovato Dazzle At Final Show Of Joint Tour In Atlantic City

First up was Archuleta. Unfairly dubbed the opening act until several shows were abruptly postponed (Oh, Disney!), Archie made the most of his impressive 50-minute set. He’s a bit of a minimalist when it comes to showmanship ‘” not a bad thing. He skips the flash and gimmicks many singers use to cover up their shortcomings and gets right to the meat of performing live ‘” actually singing, and doing so damn well.

Backed by a four-piece band, he went through songs from his self-titled debut album like ‘Touch My Hand,’  ‘A Little Too Not Over You,’  ‘Don’t Let Go,’  and the surprisingly swaggerific ‘Your Eyes Don’t Lie,’  where he allowed the crowd to take over the whistling since he’s ‘not the best’  at it. After the performance, he asked the crowd what they were for Halloween and mistook someone yelling out that they were candy corn as ‘Mandy Moore.’  Those small engaging moments with the audience made Archie’s show even better. Not only did we get to see his amazing talent, we got a feel for who he really is: sweet, funny, and a real charmer.

One of the biggest highlights from his set was a bare-bones cover of OneRepublic’s monster hit ‘Apologize.’  Archie sat at his piano, spotlight fixed on him, and belted the tune with his smooth, haunting voice. Idol fans might recall season 8 winner Kris Allen’s version from the show ‘” David’s slaughters his, and buries the original right next to it.

The Jingle bally things that have been done in the Phoenix area always have some pretty “big” names and the singers are usually geared to the young adult crowd…the 20′s and 30′s bunch. I think Tokyo Hotel played last year and the year before it was Lenny Kravitz. So these things vary from locale to locale and radio station to radio station.

I’ll bet my dogs (whom I love totally) that Adam will be on a New Year’s eve telecast, will get some National TV station Christmas gigs, will be on AOL music, will be featured on MTV and VH1. I am sure he will do some Big market “dance music” gigs like LA, Chicago, and New York. I don’t think Adam will be sitting on his hands.

Tess, I recall few weeks back, that Ryan Seacrest did a twitter request for everyone to name 3 persons they wanted on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, and I know he was bombarded with Adam and Lady Gaga requests, so hope springs eternal for that

I just downloaded for free the smaller screen versions (720P and 480P) of TfM mv, and they are stunning. In some aspects, I can see why they didn’t want the mv before TII. For one, it is way too long for a movie trailer. Actually, I can’t think of any other reasons, nevertheless, Adam is absolutely gorgeous in the video. The bigger version, 1080P, is even more stunning with the sound off, cuz for me, the singing was not synching very good.

I listen to this station quite a bit. The only AI peeps I’ve ever heard them play are Kelly, Daughtry and Jordin. I believe they also played Crush during its heyday as well.

This station also hosts a Jingle Ball each year at the St. Pete Times Forum. This year, I know they’re having The Fray, Jordin, Sean Kingston and 3OH!3. I’m not sure who else will be there.

ETA: Oh, and this is the station locally where we can hear Ryan’s syndicated show in the afternoons.

I definitely don’t think Adam is “above” doing Jingle Balls. He is not above doing anything at this point. And I won’t speak for Jingle Balls in any other city, but the Z100 Jingle Ball in NYC definitely seems to gear to a younger audience. That is all I am saying.

This quote from the Houston Chronicle Entertainment blog says it all for me about Carrie….she is the perfect “ice Princess” in the “ice castle”. She has a beautiful voice but I always feel like she is holding something back…just not letting herself “thaw” and let loose with the “hot” woman who “might” reside within.

Even though my attachment to country music is pretty slim I’ve listened to enough stuff from the “great” country ladies to feel just a tad let down by Carrie. I just want her to “let loose”…to stop being a little lady when she sings and turn into a WOMAN. The video for Cowboy Cassanova totally turned me off….it made me feel like I was watching a bunch of 12 year olds trying to act like Western bar maids…and it just didn’t work for me.

Carrie was kind of shy and buttoned up on Idol, and I think she still is more that way than many would expect her to be in her position. I guess time will tell whether her having the personality she does will get in the way of her being a really really long-term country legend or not.

That would NEVER happen. Adam and 19/RCA are way too savvy. Adam was on Ellen for 5 minutes (phone call) and Oprah for 5 minutes (Skype). No performance, and not even in STUDIO! He will promote himself wherever possible, as he should.

Well I have to say I disagree with that bloggers assessment of Carrie’s new album but I am not a fan of Taylor Swift, I do not like Kelly Clarkson’s current album, I think Adam’s two singles have been disappointing to say the least. Different strokes. The four songs I have heard from Carrie’s album have all been fantastic so I expect the rest of the album will also be great.

That would NEVER happen. Adam and 19/RCA are way too savvy. Adam was on Ellen for 5 minutes (phone call) and Oprah for 5 minutes (Skype). No performance, and not even in STUDIO! He will promote himself wherever possible, as he should.

i, too, am of the mind that adam’s team is wayyyy to forward thinking to let a possible opportunity like this be sloughed off… everyone – everyone in the game now is scrambling and hustling to keep themselves out there, front and center, to stay commercially viable and relevant… the jingle balls, especially z100′s at madison square garden, are considered big ”gets”, with stars new and established scrambling to find a way to get on the bill… and who would turn down an op to play msg… it’s still one of the most storied places to have on your resume to have played ;)

I for one do not agree with this reviewer one bit. I think Carrie sounds fantastic and invokes the most emotion on this Album then she has previous…Though I may agree the Kelly,Adam and Miranda Lambert are putting out exciting musical ventures I do not agree that Brooke White or Taylor Swift have. I find it contradicting to say that the music is lazy and and uninspired and she sings without emotion then to say it will probably sell millions and produce many single hits. If you sell millions of an Album and it spawns multiple single hits then to me someone is being inspired, someone feels the connection of Carrie’s singing and interpretation of songs and someone feels that it is good enough to shell out money for it. She is doing something right..and I for one get it.

Hm, the Houstin Chronicle has been hit and miss. And while they gave Fearless 2.5 stars, this was not because of Taylor’s inspiring song writing and it really wasn’t the best of reviews either:

Joey Guerra decided a long time ago that Carrie is a soulless Barbie and there’s pretty much nothing she could do that would make him write a review about her that doesn’t have that slant. There’s a few writers that will never give Carrie a chance and he’s one of them. I’m all for constructive reviews whether they’re positive or negative but Guerra and a few other writers aren’t going to give Carrie that so they don’t rate consideration from me.

I think the emotion of Carrie’s singing on a lot of songs on her new album is unmistakable, like on Temporary Home, Mama’s Song, What Can I Say, Look At Me, and Someday When I Stop Loving You. The most awesome thing about it is the way she changes up her voice to suit the mood of the lyrics. There’s a lot of really cool stuff going on and IMO the album shows how much she’s grown as an interpreter. There isn’t a lot of storytelling on the album but what Carrie does with the 3 stories of Temporary Home is amazing IMO. Everyone knows she can belt but the revelations on this album IMO are the ones a lot of us started seeing on her tour last year: how incredibly gorgeous and emotive she is when she holds back on the power and lets the subtlety and nuance of her voice come through.

I think Carrie does struggle to find a whole album full of songs that live up to her talent and it must be a crazy process with everybody trying to get a credit on her album. I definitely don’t think all the songs on Play On live up to her abilities but IMO 4 of the ballads are her career’s best and she brings something really special to all of them. There’s only 1 or 2 songs I’m not big on.

The girl’s in a good place in her life now – that comes through really clear on the album. It’s not going to make for a flashy album because that’s not the kind of girl she is. She’s an old soul and that’s never going to excite the Guerras of the world. I can live with that.

I think Lindsey Cardinale (from Carrie’s AI season) and David Cook are her closest friends from AI so it makes sense she’d say what she did about David. She used to be really good friends with Anthony Federov too but I think they’ve drifted somewhat. She was friends with Bo too.

I don’t really care what about the reviews and I like Play On a lot. There’s only 1 or 2 songs that I don’t like, compared to Carnival Ride (I didn’t like 3 or 4 songs in that album)

I live in Houston and don’t go to the Chronicle for my music reviews. Or reviews of movies or anything else for that matter. I go there for basic local news, weather updates and classifieds. :) Their entertainment/lifestyle/arts division has always been seriously lacking. JMO, for what it’s worth. Anything the Chronicle has outside of hard news worth reading usually comes from other sources.

Maybe I don’t “get” twitter, but it just seems like such an ego-driven thing. David Archuleta Shows No Sophomore Slump on Christmas from the Heart

Thanks to Archuleta’s stellar pipes, the season is merry and bright.

While a holiday album is still a rather curious choice for an artist’s sophomore project, especially when the debut performed respectably like David Archuleta’s did, traditional Christmas songs are actually a pretty great match for the American Idol alum’s vocal range.

So perhaps, it really was a genius move after all.

But the proof’s in the singing, of course, and Archuleta showcases tremendous diversity whether he sticks with tradition on the string-laden opening cut “Joy to the World” or gets a little experimental on “Pat-A-Pan,” which is basically the French equivalent of “The Little Drummer Boy” tale. And while the thought of someone from American Idol singing in French might seem rather cringe-worthy, Archuleta actually pulls it off convincingly.

I’m not an Adam fan, but I think it’s exciting. Sure, a slot on Ellen was always a given, but the fact that Ellen has been confirmed likely signals that the rest of the TV promo schedule should be confirmed soon. I expect to see news on the rest of Adam’s promotional line-up, aka morning shows, late night shows, etc. to start dribbling out soon. That’s pretty exciting for Adam fans.

Kris has had a bazillion promotional appearances while Adam’s has not been on anything. Kris has been on all the big evening shows, including Ellen and morning shows, while Adam only had a couple of mornings after the finale. We are excited that Adam is finally getting to promote his single.

So I know Adam is doing GMA 11/24 and I’m pretty sure Letterman 11/25. As he’s in New York and doing the promo thing, will he do Regis and Kelly and maybe one of the other morning talks around then? It will be interesting to see FYE as done on morning shows, or like Regis and Kelly. And last time Adam and Kris were there it was acoustic, but assuming both will show up with their bands this time. Hmm. This will be interesting.

I hope to @god that Adam does get to go back on Oprah, but again, will be interesting to see FYE and Oprah. I hope I get the chance, I think it would be fun.

Eh, I think Kris’s parents tweeting is cute. I don’t think Adam’s parents tweet, but Kris’s parents are very supportive of Adam on twitter and that’s sweet to see. Adam’s brother is pretty funny on twitter. I know Kris’s brother is on twitter and was going to release some tweetvids from backstage on the tour. That I think is a bit weird, but I haven’t seen the vids, so maybe they’re cool too.

As far as the bubbletweets go, I don’t think Adam or Kris ever seemed as into them as Matt and Danny did. Most of the time they seemed to go along with them, rather than initiate them. Even the infamous “beep beep beep” bubble tweet was in response to the twitter barrage they received from kradam fans after Kris wasn’t in one of Matt’s bubble tweets, right?

I dunno, I agree that it makes sense for them to remain private for the most part, but maybe some parents just have more outgoing personalities, and like to engage fans too? As long as they don’t cross the line into being too chummy with fans or turn into self-promotion, I think it’s all in good fun. The safest way to go is of course to keep the account protected, but I’m not gonna go so far to say that those with the unprotected accounts are exhibiting bad judgment. Of course, they may exhibit bad judgment when/if they tweet something inappropriate, but until then, an open twitter account doesn’t signal anything terrible IMO.

I am not sure how Kris will do on Letterman (will the dry humor go over?), but he was awesome on Jimmy Fallon. Has he been on Conan? I think Adam will be pretty amusing everywhere and will probably change it up. On Oprah, he seemed to me like he was a kid who had just gotten a new bike. :)

No idea about Kris on Letterman. As far as I know, it hasn’t been scheduled, but hey, could totally happen. As for it being funny? Not sure. I happen to be one of those people that do think Kris is funny with a good dry sense of humor, and thought he was good with Jimmy Fallon, less so with Leno, but I put that on Leno (or as I like to call him, yawn and fawn) . I can see Conan’s humor and Kris’s really meshing well and Kris being his dry humorous self. For some reason I don’t see Kris being as funny with Letterman. Just something about their senses of humor probably not gelling. Obviously YMMV.

I wouldn’t count on Kris or Adam getting an interview slot on the last-night TV shows. Music acts usually get interviews only if they have done something “newsworthy” (like when Kris won AI) or if they are extremely famous/popular (Madonna, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen). So, I would expect that on Letterman and the Tonight Show Kris and Adam will get only a performance slot at the end of the show. That’s all Kelly Clarkson got the last time she was on the Tonight Show. Still good exposure, though, even without an interview.

I know I heard on the news recently that studies have found that Twitter is actually used more and is more popular with “older” people and that younger people tend to use other types of social networking.

The thing about Kris as a guest on any show is what questions can you ask him that we haven’t heard ad nauseum, ie how’s the new record going, what’s life like now post Idol, what about Adam, Adam, Adam?
I hate when they put him in that position where he literally has to either justify his winning over Adam or prattle on about what he feels even now about Adam’s “crush” or what more can he tell us about Adam in general. As I recall, Leno interview was mostly Kris talking about Adam.

There’s just not much there to talk about with Kris, I’m afraid.

Adam, on the other hand, has all sorts of stuff — the Details shot, the Michael Jackson movie, the “controversial” album cover, the Drake breakup (though I hope they don’t go there), the glittery people who now surround him, the 2012 stuff, the AMAs. Not only is he a great guest he has plenty to talk about.

I disagree. There was the tour, and just his experiences with that. There is his single they can talk about, his album, recording it, how that was. The craziness of fans, blah blah blah. I mean what do celebs usually talk about when on these shows? Their upcoming offering of music, book, movie, whatever, and whatever personal stories they feel like telling. It doesn’t have to be some rehash of what they’ve done lately and so for that reason, somehow Kris would come up short.

Kris is just like most other celeb guests, has a product to push, can tell cute/weird personal stories. And he does have a great dry sense of humor, so he can do so in humorous ways. Well sometimes. I like Kris, but sometimes he can mumble and not connect as much with people. But that was on tour or after the show, he was exhausted. He really is a funny guy in his own right, imho. It’s just subtle.

So I personally want to just dial back whatever I said and just put it in the salt mines of rumorville, cuz man, did I dislike that elephant chick.

Anyhew, didn’t mean to start some heated debate about late night talk show performances. Yikes! Was just happy that Adam might be on Letterman, and happy about the other apperances for him like Ellen that have been confirmed, want more to happen, because I know there are a lot confirmed for Kris already, so I don’t have to worry about him there. Oh and again, I don’t worry about how Kris will come off on these shows, because I personally think that a vast majority of the time he acquits himself very well. So I look forward to seeing Kris do the talk show circuit as well.

Actually I said that I will find it funny for the height difference (what? I will) AND that I think that their senses of humor will mesh well. So that I think that Kris will be funny with Conan, visually and otherwise. I’m not typically fond of simple visual lulz, but once and a while I indulge.

I never liked Letterman funny so I’m ok if Kris/Adam doesn’t guest there.

Before everyone gets too excited about these night time “talk show appearances” it isn’t the norm for a musical guest to be invited to sit and shoot the shit with the host unless there is a specific reason (winning AI). Most of the time (like with Allison) the Idol is only there to perform their single and maybe to exchange a hello, how are you. Even some shows like Today and CBS this morning the singing guest just sings.

So I will be surprised if these guys get a real sit down 10 minute “bit” with Letterman or Conan this go round. Maybe when they become more of a household name they’ll be invited back.

Just remember Cookie on SNL just got to sing. No skits, no bits, no talky stuff…that is the norm.

Agree with CindyM. Backstories on downalbum tracks are way too insidery for mainstream shows like Dave/Conan. They are much more likely to ask him about LLWD — which, frankly, is better for Kris anyway even if it’s old news to his invested fans.

Yeah, the bookers for these shows are typically locked in mortal combat. There are unwritten, but well-understand rules about these shows that people in the industry all know. Deals are brokered, negotiations commence, but I don’t think it’s based on geography. There are exceptions of course, like if you’re Julia Roberts or Angelina Jolie, I think you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want.

Love Letterman & Conan, wouldn’t watch Leno if you paid me (and I think that 10 pm slot is now pretty useless anyway). I adore Chelsea Handler, but her show is just too small right now. She still gets a lot of “c” and “d” level guests, so that’s not really the goal for Kris or Adam right now.

Um, yeah. There’s plenty to talk to Kris about. How about — his album, how he put his band together, is the band going to have a name, whether they have worked out details of his tour, the Elle magazine photo shoot, how does he like living in L.A., etc. It’s not like these interviews are long — at most, Leno or Letterman talks to each guest for 5-10 minutes.

His interview with Leno was actually very funny. Jay asked him about prposing to Katy and what Katy’s father’s reaction was to the idea of her marrying a guy who had dropped out of college in order to go on Idol.

If that’s the backstory, Kris would probably be better off if the host of the show doesn’t know it or ask about it. The goal is to get new people to be interested and buy the music, expressing that your frustrated with your record company and felt you had to compromise for your album isn’t really all that uplifting and positive. It’s cool for the Idol bubble to know, because we’ve already grown to know Kris and the other contestants, but for those that aren’t as familiar with them, it might not come off well.

Thanks, I got that directly from Adam Official. There not always on the ball over there. In fact, they have the GMA concert listed as 11/25/09 and I thought it was supposed to be on 11/24/09.

The TV Shows are probably scale which is around $800, I think.

I apparently stand corrected on the Kris appearance on Leno. Guess it did not hold my interest.

Back before Leno “retired” from late night to accomplish his mission of ruinion NBC’s 10:00 pm timeslot for good, the relationship between these two shows was very contentious. Some of the bad blood can be seen in that movie about the Late Night Wars that was on HBO like 10 years ago or something.

Some people in Hollywood can get away with doing the same promo on competing shows, but most cannot. Leno’s in a funny spot now, as most of the networks aren’t letting their tv stars appear on his 10:00 pm show. So, he’s probably begging for some recording artists! Heck by May, he’ll probably be interviewing AI’s 4th place finisher.

I think Kris is an interesting and endearing person who has no problem whatsoever coming across well on tv. I just tend to agree with others who don’t believe they’ll be much talking for Kris or Adam on the late night appearances. Let’s face it, they’re not Springsteen, they’re the musical act that plays for the last 5 minutes of the show. But, to maximize the promotional opportunities of these types of shows, that’s all they really need to do. They just need to make sure they do their job well in those 5 minutes.

I don’t understand the empty theater theme they are using.

I’m glad, for Adam’s fan’s sakes, that his site is becoming better. As AI’s Season 9 begins, you’ll need that outlet more. Just as DCO is a support system for Cook fans.

I know I was hoping David Cook would end up on Letterman since I always preferred him. But, I also knew, since Cook was on Leno a number of times, that his chances for getting on Letterman were very slim indeed. And, since Leno — during his Tonight Show reign — had the higher ratings that was probably okay with 19E. But, of course, now that Leno is no longer a factor, Cook might get a booking after his next album comes out, especially if Letterman’s ratings continue to beat Conan’s. 19E will work harder to get him on there. It’s about ratings, not loyalty.

As someone mentioned before, Conan didn’t write for Letterman. He was his replacement. Conan wrote for “The Simpsons” and “SNL” before being picked from almost total obscurity to replace Letterman once Letterman defected from NBC to CBS when he was passed over for the “Tonight Show” gig.

Performers do both all the time ‘“ they have a L.A. media run and a N.Y. media run. If you notice, it’s very common for a personality to do “Regis & Kelly” in the morning and either Letterman or “The Late Show” (now Fallon) at night. The L.A. shows (Ellen, Ferguson, Kimmel, Leno and Tonight Show) will spread the appearances around with (my guess) Ellen and Conan having first pick.

Same goes for NY with the View, R&K, Letterman, Fallon, the morning news shows and even Rachael Ray. Of course, Oprah’s in the middle and anyone would be happy to fly to Chicago for that.

They will saturate, but try not to over saturate with probably three appearances on each coast.

Sorry, this is one of the stations at yes.com. They pit two artist’s new songs against each other, and tonight it’s Adam’s FYE vs Ryan Star’s Breathe–it’s called Hit or Miss. It’s good, but of course I have to side with Adam. I think it’s in Detroit.

Woohoo they added FYE to my local station KPEK in Albuquerque!!! I’m listening to it stream on the station website right now! Why this is more exciting to me than the others, I have no idea, but I’m enjoying the crap out of it!!!

So: I saw on yes.com that WDVD in Detroit, MI has a nightly contest where they pick two new tracks (maybe from new artists, too? I dunno) against each other. The listeners call in with their favorite. Adam was pitted again Ryan Star, and Adam won. The djay said that typically the American Idol wins (heh) and that is why he expected Adam to steamroll his way thru Hit or Miss for the next couple of weeks. Oh, and b/c ppl preferred it. 8) I obviously did not vote, but I was curious as to who would win. I don’t know if Breathe is Ryan’s first single or not, but Adam was victorious.

Would’ve voted for FYE though. Much more catchy and interesting, to me. I liked Breathe well enough but it was rather bland.

I don’t know how fair these contests are. I mean, the songs aren’t even in the same genre. Seems to me that, previous fanbases aside, pop fans would vote for FYE and rock fans for Breathe. It’d be more interesting if they pitted songs that are similar in sound against each other.

Well, you know, I am not sure if perhaps the djay was being somewhat facetious, but if listeners thought the song sucked, I am sure they wouldn’t have voted for it. I like Breathe, but I like FYE better (okay, I like TfM better, but that wasn’t a choice ;)). Oh, and the listeners heard FYE and then Breathe, voted, then the djay replayed part of FYE and Breathe. It IS interesting that they pitted Ryan, who sometimes opens for Cook, vs Adam. I wonder if they knew this?

Music performers typically don’t get a sit-down unless they have done something “newsworthy” (Kris winning AI) or they are extremely famous/popular. Paul McCartney got a sit-down on the Tonight Show, while Kelly Clarkson (an American Idol who has sold a lot of records) just got to sing. Kris won’t get another sit-down; David Cook didn’t get one the second time he was on the Tonight Show, just a musical performance.

Adam is a newbie, so I doubt Letterman will talk to him. Sting was on Letterman last week and even he didn’t get a sitdown. Same for recent guests Roseanne Cash and Kings of Leon.

According to The Late Show website, standby tickets for each day’s show go on sale at 11:00; tickets are available for purchase until noon (unless they sell out sooner). The show is then taped later in the afternoon.

Here’s my take: Adam delivered what he promised, a danceable single that pulls from several generations of pop music. “It’s dance music, with, like, a glam-rock shuffle beat, in the style of T. Rex, Rock and Roll Part 2, songs like that,” Adam told Ryan on the show.

Produced by Dr. Luke and written with Claude Kelly, For Your Entertainment walks the same fine lines that Adam did during his time on Idol. You can hear echoes of ’70s glam-rock and ’80s synth-pop as well as more contemporary styles. Its decadent imagery (pain, pleasure, fallen angels) is overtly sexual without being explicit. And while the song’s breakdown gives Adam plenty of room to show off his vocal chops, he never goes overboard within the main body of the song. This is much closer to what I was expecting — and hoping — to hear from Adam than Time for Miracles was. I’ve got to think it’s going to meet just about everybody’s expectations for him, including mine.

“I feel like this is a good dress-up song,” Adam told Ryan after the song played. Ryan’s reaction? “Totally stands out — really stands out.”

See, I’ve got a friend who works on the show and hooked me and my man up with tickets!! I have to be in NYC for a wedding that week anyway sooo….I’m so friggin excited, and came here to shamelessly brag, now that the news has leaked. As far as I know, he’ll only be the musical guest, but my friend said (GASP!) “bring a digital camera for photos; I’ll try to bring you down after…” I get a little weak-kneed thinking about what THAT might mean….

So, for those of you in the New York area who may try to go–the show airs on the 25th, but it films on the 23rd. I was told to show up at 5pm–taping lasts from 6pm-7pm. But I’m on an extra special friends ticket list just for extra special people like me : ) (Brag brag brag) which means I get to bypass the line, so if you’re not you may have to show up earlier–not sure how that works.

I know I’m being unbearabley showoffy, but I just can’t contain the flailing, I’m sorry. I’m practically jealous of myself! But if it makes it any better, I promise to give a full and detailed report afterwards!!.

By the way, my friend said things are always subject to change, so none of this info is etched in stone–don’t hate me if its wrong–I’ll be miserable enough for all of us!

I think Carrie does struggle to find a whole album full of songs that live up to her talent and it must be a crazy process with everybody trying to get a credit on her album. I definitely don’t think all the songs on Play On live up to her abilities but IMO 4 of the ballads are her career’s best and she brings something really special to all of them.

I don’t know if you’re still around to see this windmills. But I found this a very interesting comment. And if Carrie really does put together an album by looking for songs that live up to her talent, then that could explain why Mr. Guerra feels the way he does.

When I hear interviews with the artists I love about their music, I hear passion for songs come through. Ones that they picked/wrote because the lyrics touched them or made them laugh. Ones that they picked because the melody wouldn’t leave them alone. Lots of reasons. But always about feeling the music. They take their talent and then apply it to the music that they love. Some of the songs may show off that talent. Many won’t. But they all were created from the heart.

If an artist looks for songs that live up to their talent, then they aren’t starting from the heart. That doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t attach the songs. But the music selected and vibe of the whole album turns out different. Maybe that is what he senses. Not saying it is. And I have no idea what Carries album is like as I haven’t listened to it. I just found the concept of how an artist chooses songs and what the end result might be to be a fascinating idea. Now I wish I could make a list of both my favorite and least favorite albums and interview all the artists so I can do a study of it.

..so basically it’s that iTunes sucks ass inside out (Project Runway reference) than? okay.

Like, I’m seriously raging right now. What the fuck kind of fail is this. It’s three weeks until his album release, he really needs that single on ITunes RIGHT NOW.

iTunes is running a massive ad for “Carrie Underwood Week,” including her new album, singles, and an artist playlist where she picks 16 of her favorite songs (including tracks from artists as varied as Dolly Parton, New Kids on the Block, Black Eyed Peas, etc.). She picks David Cook’s Avalanche as her #10 track, and in the commentary says “This is my favorite D.C. song!” But just last week during the taping of her Holiday special she said Lie was her favorite. All I can say is yay Carrie for not being able to make up her mind and pimping two different DC songs!

Okay, kids, well I am throwing in the towel. Keep up the iTunes watch. Am not feeling hopeful. Happy I got it at AO, at least.

I downloaded that off of Adam’s official site the other day (does that count for his sales?).

I am very concerned about this as well. Im afraid that our impatience might actually hurt his sales numbers…Im not sure if all this preorder stuff counts toward his initial weeks’ sales or how any of this crap works…they may just be technicalities, but they do matter…my only consolation is that Adam advertised it on his twitter (twice for the single actually) but other than that, what gives? If the song does well on itunes then radio stations have to play it by default like that Owl City song (which I absolutely adore and learned about through this blog so thank you :)…
but Im still worried LOL. maybe someone should tweet Adam and ask him what HE wants us to do rather than what his label wants us to do and is advertising for…just to be safe I guess I mean we all want him to do well.

No he announced it on Ryan Seacrest Radio Show…But he actually said Monday Nov 2

I must have missed that. Oh well, in that case, it sucks big time.

iTunes glitches like this happen all the time. It takes time for them to label and index everything, get keywords and searches working, etc. I can’t remember a big new release day without some kind of iTunes conspiracy theory. And not just for AI tracks – spend any time at all over at Pulse and you’ll find Britney fans and Bey fans and fans of every other artist up in arms at some point about how the fact that their artist’s new single is losing sales because iTunes screwed up. It all comes out in the wash.

Maybe Adam’s single was not scheduled to drop at iTunes today. The single is available for sale through his official site, and you can bet that RCA will be reporting those numbers to Soundscan – they are going to want every unit accounted for for publicity purposes. If it was meant to be listed at iTunes I’m sure it will be soon enough, and there will be plenty of people ready and willing to buy it as soon as it’s available.

Carrie has a big banner on the home page and the Country page. She’s the only one with a banner on the Country Page. They even have a “Carrie’s Favorite Albums” section and David Cook is on it, hmm.

ETA: They also have a “Carrie’s Favorite Movies” and “Carrie’s Favorite TV Shows” section in the Country page. Craaaazy!

Allison has a thumbnail in the “What’s Hot” section of the Music page and the “New and Noteworthy” section of the Pop page.

Well Adam gets tons of Tweets, and lots of them are nuts, so why would he be looking at them? He might assume that his single was going to be out and that was all he needed to do, and frankly that’s all most artists would do or expect. Not like most of them are going to keep an eye on the iTunes software or whatever, to make sure it’s doing it’s job. I think it would be weird if Adam was anxiously sitting by something that loaded iTunes waiting for his name to show up. I would kind of worry about Adam if he did that.

I think that he trusts his company to make the single available as soon as they can, considering it’s money for them. I don’t think he’d think that either his company or iTunes would screw up, so that he would need to keep an eye on them. Probably not his first assumption.

Dumb question, but don’t you think most of the fans have ordered the single off AO? Will there be a lot of people (established fans) ordering off iTunes? While the single is getting great radio play already, it is probably too soon for the general public to be seeking the song out. I guess my question is, is it really expected for FYE to have huge opening iTunes sales at this point? I mean the single, not the album.

His voice is amaaaazing in the muse song!!! Love muse to death, but he is a better vocalist. The album is really eclectic, there are rock and dance songs, ballads, middle of the roads. Great!

Exactly my thought (and worry). I wanted to wait for the single to be on itunes and buy it then because that is the most visible and highly trafficked site for buying new singles.

I’m really afraid that the core fanbase won’t be able to move FYE up the itunes chart much, especially now that the song STILL isn’t available, because they’ve already bought it on AO. ARGH! Very frustrated with this marketing strategy. Why wouldn’t RCA want the bigger exposure of having the song on itunes rather than the stronger push on AO (which only big fans who would have bought it anyways will know about).

Aftermath has a serious early 80′s vibe.

Wow! Definitely impressed with what I was able to hear. NGL I was worried by some of the some descriptions (looking at you Loaded Smile), but getting to hear these helped to ease that. Can’t wait.

WOW….I absolutely adore Music Again and Soaked….. and several others. This is going to be a GREAT album! So eclectic!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE It!

I know I am going to like the whole album, biased or not. I am happy to be able to hear Adam’s voice, loud and clear. Can’t wait until we can hear the whole songs.

Holy crap – just listened to snippets of the snippets (at work, no headphones so really couldn’t play them all the way through) and I am STOKED! He sounds beautiful! I feel a lot of tension melting away just knowing that the songs are good.

I want it now, though!

Is there a way to have the snippets play one right after the other without stopping?

I am absolutely loving the album, all 30 sec snips of them.

His voice sounds absolutely gorgeous on some of the ballads.

And this album is the ultimate in eclectic. About the only thing he doesn’t do is rap! (Need to buy Rihanna’s album for that. I heard a third single off her album this morning and she is really going for a different sound this time around.)

I’m really loving all of the snippets with the exception of Strut. Just not feeling that one.

WOW!! Like totally wow!! If I have to buy multiple albums to get all additional tracks I’ll be doing that so fast your heads will spin. I can’t believe how awesome most of these sound. There were only 2 that I kind of shrugged at. LOVE the production of the album. Even with all the different types of music the production really makes it feel cohesive.

Fave 3:
1) Music Again – which totally surprised me as I didn’t expect to like this one
2) Fever – love what he did with this
3) Soaked – OMG Matt could have so totally written this song with Adam in mind.

Other things:

-While I didn’t like the opening to the Aftermath clip, it got good sounding fast. Given Ferras was on the writing team I have faith when I hear the whole thing I’ll love it.

-Sure Fire Winners – laughed at some of the lyrics. So totally Adam (eg. “born with glitter on my face”)

I didn’t really care for the pink one I think it’s the one am not feeling yet. It’s the one called Whataya Want From Me. Fever sounds like it’s going to be awesome to dance to. There’s only 2 that am not feeling, but might like more with the whole song. The other one is If I had You, the rest I really love.

Some adds. Some just playing it. It didn’t have an add date for HAC, but HAC stations added it anyway. Today is the day for Pop adds and he should get a lot.

His voice is amaaaazing in the muse song!!! Love muse to death, but he is a better vocalist. The album is really eclectic, there are rock and dance songs, ballads, middle of the roads. Great!
