Lin-Manuel Miranda to Close Out Broadway Run of ‘In the Heights’

After a Broadway run of more than two and a half years that included four Tony Awards and a Grammy, the hit musical “In the Heights” will close on Jan. 9. “It’s the right time, ” one of the producers, Kevin McCollum, said Wednesday, citing the implacable economics of Broadway. “If we ran another year, it wouldn’t make sense.”

The “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks, who joined the cast in August, will be leaving as planned in mid-November but Lin-Manuel Miranda, who created the musical and originally starred in it, will be returning to the lead role of Usnavi for the final 19 performances. A movie version is also in the works, scheduled to begin shooting in 2011.

Kid Rock on Steven Tyler’s ‘American Idol’ judgeship: ‘I think it’s the stupidest thing he’s ever done’

“I think it’s the stupidest thing he’s ever done in his life, ” he told the magazine, in an conversation to be published next week. “He’s a sacred American institution of rock ‘n’ roll, and he just threw it all out the window. Just stomped on it and set it on fire.”

“I think whoever’s advising him, ” he continued, “we should bring back the guillotine, or whatever they call that thing. And if it was himself, he needs some serious counseling. I love him to death, but I gotta speak the truth.”

“Our home still takes my breath away”

I noticed a story on the web this week marking the one-year anniversary of the Extreme Makeover build we did for the Cowan-Brown family in Bunker Hill, Indiana. Here’s what the builder, Paul Schwinghammer (what a great name for a builder!) of Hallmark Homes said: “A day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t thought of the experience of helping the family and organizing thousands of eager volunteers. It was a humbling testament to how giving Hoosiers are.”

Man, that’s always what I love to hear and I was equally stoked to read Heather Cowan’s (the mom) quote: “Our home still takes my breath away. I never would have sat down and described this as my dream home. It is much more than my dreams!” I remember this show was a great build and I really liked having singer David Cook join us on site. I dug into my iPhoto and grabbed a few pics from this episode’s special project to help celebrate this anniversary!

Foster’s song struck chord with Johns

Singer Michael Johns and producer David Foster happened to be working in Foster’s Santa Monica recording studio when Foster’s director friend, Michael French, came in to tell them he had finished his feature film on Vancouver athlete and activist Rick Hansen.

The chance encounter resulted in the acoustic version of the Foster-penned hit “Man in Motion” that appears on the movie’s soundtrack.

“It was one of those happy coincidences, ” says Johns, the Australian-born singer who started working with Foster after appearing on TV’s American Idol two years ago. “David and I were actually working on another project and the director came in.”

Foster is an executive producer of French’s movie.
