The American Idol callback auditions continue today in Nashville

Adam Lambert tells Australia’s Dylan Lewis that he’ll be releasing an acoustic CD in November/December that will be a combination of acoustic recordings from Glam Nation and the international radio tour earlier this year.

“There is going to be an acoustic CD, I don’t have an exact release date–probably around Thanksgiving time–November December,” says Adam, “We went around Europe and here [Australia]  the earlier part of this year, and we did a lot of promo so I had Monte my guitar player and my drummer at the time and we did very stripped back versions of the songs, and we got our hands on some of those recordings. We also recorded some of the stuff from the actual Glam Nation tour, so it’s going to be a mix of both.”

‘Glee’ Music Producer on ‘Rocky Horror’ Episode: ‘Why Can’t a Girl Be the Transvestite?’

With another themed episode of ‘Glee’ just a day away, fans of the 1975 cult classic ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ are in a tizzy about Tim Curry’s iconic Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite, being portrayed by actress Amber Riley, a female.

“They’re up in arms about that. But, really, why can’t a girl be the transvestite?” ‘Glee’ music producer Adam Anders tells PopEater. The show, he contends, “is about inclusion.”

Riley, who plays Mercedes Jones, will perform ‘Sweet Tranvestite’ in the episode dubbed ‘The Rocky Horror Glee Show.’ John Stamos has been quoted saying he was supposed to take the Frank-N-Furter role, but FOX balked at the idea of the former Uncle Jesse in fishnets and a corset.

So, How Sanitized Is Glee’s Version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show?

But in order to perform Rocky Horror’s libido-forward oeuvre, the show does make a few concessions, the biggest of which (spoilers ahead) is casting Frank-N-Furter as a female. Mercedes (Amber Riley) plays the sexually omnivorous doc, (the role made famous by Tim Curry in the film), which makes her sweet, but no longer an actual transvestite. (When Frank-N-Furter belts out her introduction, she now hails from Sin-sational, Transylvania, rather than Transsexual, Transylvania.)

Shankman thinks he was specifically sought out to help tone down the musical’s racier elements. “Everything I touch turns ‘family,’ no matter how risqué it is,” Shankman says. He directed the movie-musical Hairspray, a squeaky-clean version of the Broadway show based on John Waters’ film. (“There was a lot of subversive stuff, a lot of racial stuff in the original film,” he says. “You never really feel any of the ugliness of it in the movie I made.”)

Oh, and nice try by the producer of Glee asking why a girl can’t be a transvestite. Let’s see- because the first thing you picture when you hear RHPS is Tim Curry in garters? Is Amber Riley dressing up as a man in it or something? I Just saw the pictures and the answer is no, so how in the world can she be a transvestite?

  • jpfan

That’s one hell of a real estate listing. It manages to slam Taylor Hicks and outs Kelly as a lesbian. Not your run of the mill stuff at all ;)

  • Kirsten

“They’re up in arms about that. But, really, why can’t a girl be the transvestite?” ‘Glee’ music producer Adam Anders tells PopEater. The show, he contends, “is about inclusion.”

What a load of crock. Sure, females can be transvestite, but news to Glee: female transvestites dress like men. Amber is dressed in a corset and fishnets and last time I checked that’s something a female is more likely to wear than a man (who is not a transvestite or going to a Halloween party). I think that if Amber had been dressed in the male equivalent of a corset and fishnets, then people might not be commenting as much and the show would have been forward thinking and “about inclusion”.

You don’t get to accuse the show’s critics of not being open to female transvestites when what you have on your show is a female who is decidedly not a transvestite. Just admit it that Fox wasn’t going to let you have a transvestite of either sex and Amber needed a role.

  • lucy

Ah, Cold Heart. My favorite song from Elliott’s (very good) second album. … I could definitely get into an album that had that vibe prominent.

  • Jx223

Danny said on the Bella Bash video that he and his label are working on putting out “fresh, new material”. I am interested in hearing more about that. Maybe not too long from now he will release new music that’s not on his album “My Best Days”. (Like maybe an EP) I am also interested in hearing more about the Christmas song he has recorded.

  • Elliegrll

That Glee story is just offensive. They could at least try to come up with a good cover story. As Kirsten said, nobody would blink if the actress was dressed like a male, that would be both a sign of being inclusive, and neither Fox or the usual bigots would blink an eye.

  • Hazehel

Sure, females can be transvestite, but news to Glee: female transvestites dress like men.

The trouble is that women dressing like men isn’t in the bit surprising nowadays. After all, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent took men’s clothings and turned them into women’s fashion wear (Chanel’s tweed jacket and Yves’ Le Smoking), and there is a long history of women dressing in men’s clothing – George Sand for example (a woman despite the name she chose, had affairs with many famous men like Chopin) in early 19th century, Marlene Dietrich and many others in the early 20th century.

Transvestism is really only worth talking about when it is done by men.

I think that if Amber had been dressed in the male equivalent of a corset and fishnets

I have a hard time thinking of a male equivalent of corset and fishnet though. Perhaps a stereotypical gay man image, but a woman as a bear would just be ridiculous rather than shocking, in gay S&M wear she wouldn’t look that different in female S&M wear (and I don’t think Glee would go for that). The only thing I find disturbing about female aping men is female bodybuilder – they just look kinda gross.

    Tell that to Glee then.

I would have loved seeing John Stamos in the role. Glee, you wussed out big time. Lame.

Danny always has something cooking, lol. Although I remember his definition of “soon” from news on his signing- it was different from mine!

I wonder if it could also just mean he’s working on his new album and it will come out sooner than the usual 2 years? You never know.

  • Mary102

Frankly, I don’t think anyone on Glee could have possibly handled the Frank-N-Furter role. With few exceptions, most of the Glee cast, while very talented, are very bland and milquetoasty (Rachel, Finn, Schue, etc.) – especially for RHPS.

Stamos might have worked, or NPH, or some other special guest star, but that’s about it.

Still I’ll watch this week’s ep just out of curiousity.

ETA: (sotto voce) Adam would have made an awesome Frank-N-Furter ;-)

I just posted an article from TV Guide about toning down Rocky Horror for Glee.

  • windmills

Now I’m going to complain. Easton Corbin, Jerrod Niemann, The Band Perry, and Chris Young are CMA nominees who’ve had breakthrough years and they’re relegated to being PRESENTERS?! It really pisses me off that they can’t even give these people an abbreviated performance slot. I know Gwyneth and Kid Rock are more established and bigger ratings grabbers but I officially would rather have dumped those 2 spots and given them to the newer acts who are actually nominated.

As unnecessary as the ACAs are I really hope Easton, Jerrod, The Band Perry, and Chris get to perform there at least.

  • Q3

‘Glee’ Music Producer on ‘Rocky Horror’ Episode: ‘Why Can’t a Girl Be the Transvestite?’

This is a totally offensive article. They should have

If GLEE wasn’t going to do RH with respect, then they should have come up with a different Halloween theme.

What’s the difference between casting a man as Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Richard Chamberlin showing up in drag on The Drew Carey playing the transvestite “mother”?

But if they were going to have a women play the part, then they should have at least cast it as someone more suitable to the part.

Stamos might have worked, or NPH, or some other special guest star, but that’s about it.

I love NPH but he is not right for Dr. Frank-N-Furter. They need someone who is more domineering, commanding than NPH can be. He is just too nice.

Of course, maybe NPH is the right person to play Dr. F in this Disneyfied version of RHPS.

At least they could have put together a better story!

It would make her look like a dominatrix and not made sense at all.

Since they GLEEed the whole thing up perhaps they could have just dressed her as a guy, in is a tux and made her a female cross-dresser like Julie Andrews in Victor-Victoria. But done it so well that it was hard to tell it was her. And kept it as a surprise for the show.

  • girlygirl

I would think Danny’s simply talking about his next album, but I guess he could put out an EP first

  • Jx223

It seems like the CMA’s like to really focus on a select group of country artists. The same big names, with a few exceptions. They don’t seem right now like they really want to focus that much on the newcomers. During the televised CMA music festival, this year, there was hardly any newcomers that were shown performing on that show. It was mostly the same people being shown performing again.

I would be happy if Danny got to present at the CMA’s, but I wouldn’t really be surprised if he doesn’t get to be a presenter for that awards show.

I think the ACA’s might end up doing a better job of showcasing the newer artists in Country music.

I would think Danny’s simply talking about his next album, but I guess he could put out an EP first

I think that Danny might have been talking about possibly releasing an EP. His album is not that old about 7 months. I’m not sure if he would put out a 2nd album soon when his first album is not that old.

It seemed to me like he was talking about putting out some new material soon. I think that might be in the form of an EP.

  • lorismile

he could put out an EP first

I think more artists will go the EP route in the future, IMO.

  • Q3

Two good new things in the the Adam Australian Interview posted above by Cindy —

More details on the Acoustic EP — Adam said that the Acoustic FYE EP is a combination of live performances from Europe with Monte and LP and from the GNT tour. And he said it was a CD that would be out around Thanksgiving. That is the first time anyone has said it would be a CD!

Also, when asked about Enter Sandman he said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if it reared its metal head again.”

  • Lucy1234

Not sure what Danny meant when he said the plan was to work on fresh new material but whether it is an EP or an album, I am happy because that means his label and Danny are planning another project. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later and it does look like he may not be going with a 3d single from his album. I’m glad he has recorded a Christmas song which we know will be real soon.

  • Q3

Shankman thinks he was specifically sought out to help tone down the musical’s racier elements. “Everything I touch turns ‘family,’ no matter how risqué it is,” Shankman says. He directed the movie-musical Hairspray, a squeaky-clean version of the Broadway show based on John Waters’ film. (“There was a lot of subversive stuff, a lot of racial stuff in the original film,” he says. “You never really feel any of the ugliness of it in the movie I made.”)

What he refers to as “ugliness” in the original John Waters Hairspray is what made the movie meaningful and campy fun. Mocking racism is “ugliness”. That makes no sense to me. Baltimore in the 60′s was segregated and the cultural context of Hairspray was an important part of the original movie. What’s next — Shankman presents, “Mississippi Burning – the Musical”.

I am still puzzled why a male Bi-Sexual Transvestite is considered too racy for Glee — but a cross-dressing women is OK. Seems like a double standard to me. It is OK for a woman to be a Sin-sational bi-sexual.

Is there a rule book somewhere — OK to have gay characters on Network TV, but they can’t actually ever have sexual contact. It is OK to have transvestites on Family Guy because they are actual 2 dimensional characters. (Also on Fox, Prime Time.) You can have a cross-dresser on a prime time drama, but not a comedy. You can have a female dominatrix on Fox Prime Time (Bones episode) but not a male dom on GLEE.

Really, looks to me like it is more of the same. Close to no limits on sexuality of women but very tight limits on sexuality of men.

  • sr4mjc

And he said it was a CD that would be out around Thanksgiving. That is the first time anyone has said it would be a CD!

I really hope so, he sells better physically than digitally. And I know quite a few people who would love this as a stocking stuffer.

  • Indigobunting

It seems like the CMA’s like to really focus on a select group of country artists. The same big names, with a few exceptions.

Just like radio does :( I believe in paying dues, but come on, Miranda’s “Only Prettier” is still hanging in there? Good artist,Awful song, IMO.

In all fairness, pop does the same thing-focus on the big names- they just rotate on a more accelerated basis.

I think the ACA’s might end up doing a better job of showcasing the newer artists in Country music.

I think and hope so too.

More details on the Acoustic EP — Adam said that the Acoustic FYE EP is a combination of live performances from Europe with Monte and LP and from the GNT tour. And he said it was a CD that would be out around Thanksgiving. That is the first time anyone has said it would be a CD!

  • Q3

RCA seems to be quite prolific getting Adam’s music on the market, ie Deluxe album, dance remixes, acoustic EP (or CD?). Great for his fans!

Yes, there is a lot of Adam product. I am not sure I have the complete list of FYE album versions — a new one yesterday — UK Tour Edition. France FYE releases in a week. There is a new IIHY CD releasing in Germany this week. But the last thing the US got was the two-track IIHY Remixed – digital only – August 13th.

I’ll be happy when we get some of the promised new stuff and a few things they have not been released in North America or anywhere:

    - The best song from FYE — CLYG — released in UK and EU. Not even available legally as a digital track in the US. So to get it you have to by an import or download illegally.

    - Voodoo, DTRH, Master Plan only released in North America as digital tracks.

    - Suburban Decay never released or heard by the public.

    - FYE Glam Box and FYE Tour Edition – only available in North America as imports. Even the UK got the FYE Tour Edition this week.

And, of course, there is the GNT Concert DVD that RCA says they want to release if Adam approves.

Seriously — I just want one US Platinum Glam Box with everything in it — on CDs and DVDs.

Which is why the movie you made was junk while the original was genius, in my opinion, Mr. Shankman. But whatever.

And I kind of love you most of the time, Adam, and I don’t have anything against stuff that comes out sweet and inoffensive. But no need to refer to the Waters’ biting edge as “ugliness.” It happened to be, you know, reality. Except I don’t know what I would’ve done with a melted TV.

Salling is the only one in the cast that could have pulled it off- but only visually- even autotuned to within an inch of his life he doesn’t have the chops. But he DOES have that alpha male thing going on ( like Adam heehee).

This doesn’t suprise me about Glee- I just said the other day they have no problem with Santana and Britany making out in their cheerleader uniforms on the bed, but so far Curt has remained a neutered gay.

As far as aan Adam CD- the only thing I would be interested in at this point would be a DVD from the tour. To be fair, they should be focusing on the nominees at an awards show. The nominees are often the big names. I’m talking about the spots that went to non-nominees. Even Jason/Kelly but it’s ridonkulous that Jason didn’t get nominated anyway so I give that one a pass.

With country acts TV performances usually depend on whether you have a hit or you’ve got so much buzz from critical acclaim that one of the late night hosts wants you on. Like David Letterman was one of the 1st guys to have Jamey Johnson on even though he didn’t have a hit at the time, just because of the critical acclaim. In primetime it’s usually about having a hit song people will recognize which is why the CMA Music Fest went the way it did. There was an article about it and Josh Turner basically spelled it out. He said having a hit is what got him a slot on that show. The networks don’t want to take a chance on something less known because they don’t want to risk people tuning out or not catching something they’re familiar with when they’re flipping channels.

My thing is Easton, Chris, Jerrod, and The Band Perry all have really recognizable songs. You’ve already got your core of big names who’ll get the ratings, I wish the new ones with the breakthroughs were getting the chance. Anyways as far as the ACAs I think there’ll be that same network pressure to have people performing who have the hits but it’ll also really depend on who’s available to perform.

  • Tess

Nope…me too. I don’t watch the vids anymore unless it is a new song that he does for an encore. I still try and catch the interviews because I adore his real persona, but watching about a 100 concert vids of the same song to delve into nuances…not my cup of tea.

I play Adam sporodically when I have my music in the background or I am driving for long distances…but I like to fall back on my 30 year old Pink Floyd, etc. Those songs I never tire of.

. I am probably the only Adam fan that is done with FYE and ready for the new era.

No, you aren’t alone. I would like a high quality of the acoustics, especially if they are tweaking them in production. But I can see where RCA is coming from about not releasing SW here. ONLY if they can keep schedule though, even if Adams seems pretty firm on the spring/summer release. We know how things get pushed.

I couldn’t hurt and if you can get thousands of Cook fans to commit to buying a concert DVD, it might happen.

I’d be interested, but the problem is the tour is over. Where’s the footage going to come from?

  • Q3

I am sure that you are not alone. But I want the rest of the FYE stuff and the new album tomorrow.

    For FYE —-

I am most interested in the FYE Acoustic EP. I would love to have high quality stripped acoustic performances of some of these songs. And in getting the missing songs on CD.

But I am also interested in the live concert DVD because I am not a fan of the production on most of the tracks on FYE — Adam’s vocals are buried or muddied in places — sometimes by Adam singing in a back up vocal track. And I really want to have a produced version of the live FYE concert.

And the VEVO footage is on a whole different plane from the fan vids on YT.

The director was Doug Spangenberg of Space Monkey Studios who does great work.

The crew was all pros with 11 cameras and 9 operators.

The Director of Photography, Jonathan Bregel wrote this on his blog, “Doug likes to mix formats when he shoots concerts for various effects so we shot with 6x Canon 7D’s, 1x Panasonic HPX-170, 2x Panasonic HVX-200’s, and 2x GoPro HD-Hero cameras.”

The also had special sound recording equipment in place for this concert.

They finally have Adam picture as a “coming soon” on the site but this VEVO concert was originally slated for a September release. Wonder when it will be released.

I’d be interested, but the problem is the tour is over. Where’s the footage going to come from?

David did have at least one of the concerts in that latter part of the tour filmed with professional cameras. He wouldn’t say what it was for. However, I don’t think it would make sense to release anything at this point.

  • Q3

JMHO on concert DVDs. I am surprised they have not issued one for Carrie. I will believe there is an Adam GNT Concert DVD when they announce they are releasing it. But until then, I continue to believe that there is a chance it may not happen.

Regarding Cook concert DVD — please do not throw things at me — but I am skeptical. I only saw Cook live twice — shows #2 and #3 so very early on — and I am sure that the show changed over the course of the never-ending Declaration Tour. IMO David is much better live than on his CD. But his concert had very little visual excitement — it was more of a sonic experience. The artist who have successful concert DVDs tend to be theatrical artists — Bowie, Madonna, Pink. They could have inexpensively produced a Live Concert CD and if they got it out early in 2009, I bet it would have sold. Not so sure now. And I think that it is too late for a concert DVD.

I have seen the GNT concert live a lot of times — it is visually exciting, and although it is on a small scale, it has a lot of theatrical elements. There are the lasers, visuals and lighting effects. Costumes, dancers and each number is staged. It will make an interesting DVD and might actually sell. One other advantage is the Adam is selling about 50% outside of the US now — and Concert DVDs are stronger sellers in Asia-Pacific and parts of Europe vs. the US. So that might tip the scale on this one.

jamaica168: David did have at least one of the concerts in that latter part of the tour filmed with professional cameras. He wouldn’t say what it was for. However, I don’t think it would make sense to release anything at this point.

I bet enough DC fans would love to have some of that footage as bonus material on a CD or DVD to accompany his sophomore album. They should make that one of the bonuses at one of the big boxes or at i-Tunes.

MJ — since it was posted by RCA on AdamOfficial.com vs. a fan or media poll/petition, I though it was different. Please delete if that was out of line.

That’s a great idea! Low cost- not the big risk of a full DVD, which, I agree, it is a bit too late for that now. The only concert DVDs I have/have watched are John Mayers’ and Ben Folds, and neither artist has that much “visual excitement”, but they’re great concert DVDs… IMO.

PLEASE no links to polls or petitions on the blog.

MJ, I’m confused– my comments that were deleted were part of a conversation about threads on official sites relating to tour DVD interest, and did not link to polls or petitions…? I don’t care that they were deleted, I didn’t say anything of interest, haha, but just a bit confused to see some conversation deleted.

An acoustic Adam CD is really the only thing I would feel I NEED to have. While I would probably buy the concert DVD, it’s not something I’m hugely interested in—I have seen a lot of video already, and I have never been that big into concert videos of any kind (I have a few, but they just sit there; I never really watch them).

What they should have done for Cook (long ago) was put out a live CD, although maybe it’s better to wait until after the second album when there is more material. It could be a double CD, if those would sell in this economic climate. I don’t know.

The ship has definitely sailed in regards to a concert DVD for David Cook. No need to get more cash out of his fans from product from the Declaration Tour IMO. We’re saving up for DCTR2 and the second tour. As a side note, many of the tour stops were very visually stimulating, facilitated by the venue, but they were in the second half of the tour.

Reminder, this is the last week to donate to Race for Hope on behalf of David Cook’s team, if you feel so inclined. Currently, donations through his team stand at $151,720.74. Well done, Cook fans. :)

I really hope we get the Adam concert DVD! Though I’ve seen and DLed a ton of youtube vids, none of them come close to doing the show justice. I mean, technology on most personal cameras just can’t capture the sound and visuals of the live show.

Granted, even pro footage won’t COMPLETELY match the live experience, it’ll still be a lot better than even the best YT vids. So I would GLADLY fork over the money for a great tour DVD! Plus, they already have the VEVO footage from an awesome show in Indianapolis – seems like a no brainer.

Last we heard before this came up at AO was that Adam had to ok the footage and edits first, and that that might have been holding up the process, especially since he’s overseas, not to mention a notorious perfectionist, lol.

But still hope it can happen! (fingers crossed)

Hey Cook fans who may be more informed. Who is this @614michele (Michele Coss) that David retweeted and is now following? She has one follower and it’s David!

    This is what he retweeted:

@thedavidcook HEY, pass it on — Lee DeWyze’s new single “Sweet Serendipity” is available TODAY on iTunes and Amazon!

ETA: okay, he’s not following her anymore– I swear he did for a minute and I didn’t hallucinate it! He must’ve done it on accident when retweeting and unfollowed… in other words, NEVERMIND! Haha.

  • wordnerdarchie

smallie, he’s not following her, she’s following him?

  • Trina

Looks like just a regular fan who tweeted him and he re-tweeted. That was sweet of him to pimp Lee though!

Chick-fil-A could do a lot worse than having Kris as their main spokesperson. ;)

    .

Yeah, they filmed his show at the Showbox in Seattle, a venue several of the bands he credits as influences played early in their careers (Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc). It was a great show too, good crowd and Dave was in top form. I really wonder what happened to that footage.
