Kelly Clarkson on Her Dark Side, The Vanilla Factor, and 10 Years of Being Miss Independent

“I think a lot of singers get into this business for the wrong reasons, and people see through that, ” Kelly muses over the phone as she prepares to board a transatlantic flight to, ironically, an “X Factor U.K.” taping. “I think they want to be really famous, and it’s like, if you want to be in the music industry, that shouldn’t be your goal. Your goal should be to make music. I don’t want to be the most famous person in the world; I just want to make enough to pay my band, and to live, and then I’m good. I don’t have this desire to be this huge megastar. I just love singing, and that’s it. And I think a lot of other people get lost in the rest of it.”

Kelly Clarkson on Making Peace With Her Label, New Album: ‘It’s About Putting All That Crap in the Back’

“It’s so funny, anytime you give them a choice, my die-hard fans always pick something from My December, ” Clarkson says the following morning, still nursing a mild hangover. “But that song, it means a lot to me.”

As it should. It was that song from that album which pitted Clarkson against then RCA Music Group head Clive Davis and the entire major label system, a, er, sobering experience no doubt. At issue: the singer’s desire, perhaps even intrinsic need, to write her own material and not to feel like a pawn in the pop game. A ballsy move for any artist but especially so for an American Idol winner.

Crystal Bowersox Makes Her Acting Debut on Body of Proof: “I Was Pretty Insecure”

For her acting debut on Body of Proof, Crystal Bowersox says fans will be surprised, but not necessarily because she’s playing a character with a rap sheet or acting opposite famous series star Dana Delany.

“I think the mug shot is the gnarliest of all, ” she tells TVGuide.com. “I took the mug shot myself in a hotel in New Jersey so I’m pretty proud of that.”

Fans will meet the rougher and tougher side of American Idol’s Season 9 runner-up when she guest-stars on Tuesday’s episode (airing at 10/9c on ABC) as Zoe Brant, a woman serving 4-7 years behind bars for assaulting her drug dealer. Zoe comes under some intense questioning by Megan Hunt (Delany) and Det. Bud Morris (John Carroll Lynch) because they suspect she may not be over her anger issues after the woman in charge of her therapy group is killed.

From ‘Boss’ to ‘Glee, ‘ Do Any of This Season’s TV Shows Get Politics Right?

A number of old series have delved into campaigning this fall, as has Kelsey Grammer’s new drama. Only occasionally do they rise above broad parody, though.

Perhaps to brace us for what promises to be an exceptionally brutal 2012 presidential election, scripted television has taken on politics in a major way this fall. Campaigns are everywhere on TV, from established sitcoms (Glee, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation) to newcomer prestige dramas (Boss).

Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Comments: ‘I Didn’t Mean it in a Selfish Way’

After Monday’s Dancing With the Stars, two Maksim Chmerkovskiys appeared backstage.

Having publicly called out the judges for what he deemed was unfair criticism, one Maks seemed to regret possibly offending his fellow pros. The other Maks was clearly reveling in the raucous his comments caused.

“I pride myself on the fact that I’ve never changed, ” he says. “I think I got smarter… but the integrity is still there. I’m very clear in what I stand for.”
