You're saying the NPR dude had higher hopes for Cook. So that means that his reaction to the final cut is less valid? He should put an asterisk next to his review with a disclaimer that it's an Idol album, so it's okay that he was disappointed?

He has a right to feel however he wants. My point is that he speaks like someone who doesn't understand the Idol machine. I thought it was funny. I thought his take on Idol was naive. It was like "OMG, I thought Cook was going to change everything!" Uhm, NO.

Not the best review ever for me. Like I said, I prefer the reviews from critics who are familiar with Idol and understand how it works. That's just me, though.

Haha, the clips they played were so awesome that it was hard to pay any attention to that guy droning on negatively about the album in that odd reading voice of his.

I actually had to listen to the NPR review twice to realize he was saying anything negative because the clips were so awesome. It's always a good thing when the music can speak for itself! It's interesting that a lot of the negative reviews are based on the reviewers having high expectations of David. It's flattering but a bit unfair. Kind of like how Simon used to treat Carly. However, based on the music I've heard on NPR, I'm not sure that they would have given a good review of the album under any circumstance. I think the fact that they took the time to review David's album was the best we could hope for. In the end, I see it as good publicity.

I will go and listen to the full review tomorrow so I know what the hell Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m referencing.

LOL. I wish some of the album reviewers would do the same.

Having said that, the NPR critic didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t attempt to just critique the music. He brought Idol into the discussion. He said that after watching David on Idol, he hoped heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be a different kind of Idol. My point was that if this particular critic understood how Idol worked, he wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have been so disappointed.

That's interesting. I don't think it's wrong of him to bring up Idol. It's like Bo Bice. Loved him on the show. Hated what they did to his first album. That doesn't change the fact that it sucked, though. And I'm not saying Cook's album sucks.

You're saying the NPR dude had higher hopes for Cook. So that means that his reaction to the final cut is less valid? He should put an asterisk next to his review with a disclaimer that it's an Idol album, so it's okay that he was disappointed? Sounds to me like the NPR guy had an honest reaction.

But if a music critic is reviewing an album, why should it matter how the Idol machine works when evaluating it? Certainly, we may cut our faves some slack for having to throw something together, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the job of a critic. Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re evaluating the product, not the process.

Well, I think the process is part of the work. In my opinion, the best critics understand that works don't exist in a vacuum. This is not about cutting David slack, it's about understanding that works of art, be they music, paintings, movies, are influenced by the history and culture that produced them.

I've been reading these reviews these past couple of weeks, and the best reviews, be they positive or negative, have come from people who watch Idol, and understand how it works.

Thanks for all the great links! Both the CNN and MTV interviews with DC were cute and fun to watch. I loved the beginning of the CNN interview.

So I saw these things posted here earlier and wanted to come back to watch, and was baffled (for a moment) that these headlines were for 10-19-08...

mj, I know you're busy these days. :)

Also both of these posts:

If NPR dude believed it was possible for David Cook, coming off an Idol win, to make the next great alt/rock album, then he hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a clue as to how Idol works, and I think thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s true of a lot of these music critics reviewing the album.

LOL. You know? Not to mention David Cook himself telegraphed what he was about big time. If you listened to his previous work (and listened to his interviews) you heard someone who loved radio friendly, lyric centered, 90s influenced, anthemic rock. He did the same thing as his previous albums with better production - in a few months while on a grueling tour. With idol à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“play it safeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ people all over him. Who could be surprised/disappointed by the result? Only if you werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t paying attention, imo.

Are FTW!!! Thanks!
Just one question, when these reviewers are saying that DC is Daughtry 2.0, what's their excuse, are they crunched for time?...Ah, well whatever will be will be.

I use reviews as an indication of whether the music I'm listening to is of any worth or not, but ultimately a good/bad review won't be enough to sway me from listening to something bad if I want to listen to it for some reason, or vice-versa. And I doubt the majority of the people even bother to read reviews in the first place.

Hahaha, Cook being Daughtry 2.0? I call Daughtry Nickelback 2.0, myself.

I havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t been following the reviews. I have no idea how either of the Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s are doing.

Because I'm an obsessed little girl who has too much time on her hands (or simply no motivation to do any real work), I've read nearly every professional review of Cook's album that I can get my hands on. The reactions are all over the spectrum, although I'm just happy the majrity of fans are taking the album well. :)

I see your point. But I don't think that "fair and balanced" is part of the job of a critic. It's all about opinion.

At the same time, if you're a critic and just following the lead of other critics, then you don't really have an opinion. You're a lemming.

I haven't been following the reviews. I have no idea how either of the David's are doing.

I didn't listen to it either. What I mean is, if even "copying" is not a problem for (at least some of) them, having a bias against or for an Idol alumni certainly wouldn't be either. Those who don't "go with the flow" doesn't necessarily mean they're just gonna be perfectly "fair and balanced".

^Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re assuming critics really do their job LOL. After AMGà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s review came out, so many of them just pick out a part of it, and re-write a little as their own review, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s laughable.

Some critics do their jobs. Some go with the flow. Like I said, I didn't listen to the NPR thing. If he's coming from an indie/alt rock bias, that doesn't make his opinion wrong. If he copied someone else's review, then that's lame. In the end, it's all a matter of taste. Reviews have little impact on success.

I love Jackson Browne, too. I think he's one of the best lyricists in rock (or pop or folk-rock-pop, whatever you want to call him) ever. I do like "My Opening Farewell" better sung by Bonnie Raitt, but then, I like her "Angels of Montgomery" better than John Prine's, and he wrote it, so... But the lyrics of "Fountain of Sorrow" and "Late for the Sky" and "Opening Farewell" are just gorgeous. I love DC to bits, but if he can write lyrics like Jackson Browne some day, he will be doing very, very well.

Meanwhile, they are obviously completely different types and from completely different eras. Jackson Browne has singer/songwriter/70s written all over him. Still love him, though. I'll just see myself out, humming, fountain of sorrow, fountain of light, you've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight...
