Blake Lewis sounds off on ‘Idol,’ digital music

All this time, we could have shopped for another label deal, gone out on tour. So now 19 Records, kind of our middleman, is helping us out with tour support. ["A.I." producer and 19 label executive] Simon Fuller said at the end of the last season of the show that they’re behind me and want me to be successful, and he’s proven a man of his word.I’m working on a new album at my home studio in Seattle now. It’s not a Blake Lewis record. It’s a production record – Orchestral Drive-By. It’s like Massive Attack meets Zero 7 meets Glitch Mob, which is the best hip-hop out there right now.

Q: Ever think of writing an “American Idol” tell-all book? With your frank attitude, I think it could be a good read and would sell well.

A: If I ever do, I’ll give you credit. But the person I think should do that is Sanjaya Malakar. I was very vocal about him, didn’t think he should be on the show. But he’s a great kid. And his life story is super shocking. I can’t tell you why. I’ve burned him enough already. Trust me, though. It’d be a New York Times best seller. *

Camile Velasco rubs it ‘pon her belly with new debut album

FIVE YEARS AGO, Hawaii residents were overcome by the hype surrounding “American Idol” when two of their own became finalists in the televised popularity contest disguised as a singing competition.

That would be with Up Above Records, a hip-hop indie label that plans to release her full-length debut in early 2009. The lead single, a cover of Bob Marley’s “Guava Jelly” produced by Stephen Marley, hits the Internet on Tuesday.

“It’s gonna be available on iTunes, (so) I’m really excited,” she said. “I got to go out to Jamaica … in Tuff Gong’s studios, at Bob’s house, recording in a room with Stephen, just me and him.”

And you can double that risk again for the dubiously lucky ones who get the record deal without getting the crown. How hard is it to get out from under Simon Cowellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s shadow if you were, say, Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s second favorite of the season?

SONY MUSIC TURNS TO DAVIS FOR HIT$

Clive Davis is quietly reasserting his power at Sony Music Entertainment.

Many had assumed the 76-year-old legendary producer was gently being shown the door after an executive suite shuffle in April stripped him of his chairman and CEO role at the BMG Label Group.

However, Davis has turned what was initially perceived as the token title of chief creative officer into a hit-making and face-saving role for artist-development-deprived Sony Music.

And this week Oscar winner and former “American Idol” contestant Jennifer Hudson’s 217,000-selling debut, was good enough for No. 2 on the Billboard charts.

Now, according to several sources inside Sony Music, US label group boss Rob Stringer has asked Davis to talk with the heads of Columbia Records and Epic Records about working on projects for some of the artists on their labels.

Stevens, who is now a senior at the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t feed me any cool insider anecdotes or shocking insights. Jennifer Hudson at Chicago Film Fest

Last week I reported that the Chicago International Film Fest had lost Common, who was originally scheduled to receive an award at the Black Perspectives Tribute on October 18th. That left them with Sidney Poitier taking home a Lifetime Achievement Award, which is fine, but might have left the attendees, who fork over $150 a pop to be there, feeling a bit shortchanged.

Well, now theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve added Jennifer Hudson, who gets an Artistic Achievement Award (yeah, they have to make up names for the awards to make it flattering but not bogus). If she really wants to wow her hometown crowd, she should sing a number or two.

Way to go Archie!!! That is huge!! Here is some extra information about the venue/event c/o Archuleta Fanscene

The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays will battle for the right to represent the American League at the World Series when the best-of-seven ALCS gets underway on Friday at Tropicana Field Tomorrow night (Friday, October 10th) starting at 8:37 PM on TBS. During the 7th inning stretch Jive Records recording artist, David Archuleta, will take the field to perform his rendition of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“God Bless Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for an expected capacity crowd. In 2007, the Rays added four new video boards to Tropicana Field. The main video board in right field is 35 feet high and 64 feet wide, making it more than four times larger than the previous board. This ProStar video board from Daktronics will provide the video content from David Archuletaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s live performance.

Why doesn’t Archie clue us in on these things during his blogs? He doesn’t like to spoil a surprise, I guess.

Some scans from a Blender article on David Cook posted on ONTD. It’s a must read, particularly the part on his interactions with the bar patrons. =P
I also like that his goal is to sell a million. So refreshingly modest and non-delusional. I hope he meets and exceeds his goal by tons of records.

  • sma11ie

David Archuleta will be appearing on Vh1à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Top 20 Countdown on Saturday

WTG, Archie. I wonder if that could mean he’s the number 1 video? Is that likely? What’s his ranking now? I haven’t watched the VH1 count down in a long time, but I vaguely recall them inviting artists on the show who reach #1. I personally think they did a great job on his video, and it’s super-cute, but that would be super surprising to me, since established artists get huge budgets, explosions, stunts, and big-time directors on their videos.

  • ozarka

No, sma11ie. The voting for the week he appears doesn’t happen until November, so his being a guest has nothing to do with his ranking. It has more to do with Jive paying the big bucks to get him on the show. I’ve seen Natasha Bedingfield and Robin Thicke as guests there these past two weeks and they were no where near the top of the list. But wouldn’t it be something if Crush were Number 1 that same week he’s on?! It will be airing just 4 days after his album has been dropped. Crush is currently number 3 on the countdown.

  • jpfan

Vh1′s countdown is determined by votes so AI people always do well there. Because if there’s one thing AI fans know about, it’s voting. They usually get people releasing albums that week on their countdown so it’s just good promo.
And if Cook can sell a million, he’ll be the first AI winner in three years to achieve that. Jordin’s getting really close but it hasn’t happened yet. Even a “lowly” million is a tough number to reach these days.

  • psnax

Some scans from a Blender article on David Cook posted on ONTD.

So the end of that article says DC is off to London. Wonder what he was doing there … good article, refreshingly different.

  • Trina

If Clive hated DC so much do you think he would have given him a U2 song to sing F2 night? I suppose it’s possible he had more dire motives for doing so but I don’t know. When I heard Clive was picking a song i pictured him picking some schlocky cheesy overdone song to screw him over, but U2? I thought that was pretty impressive and made me restore a tiny bit of the old geezer even just for one night.

  • sma11ie

I want to see Archie’s bit on VH1. I’m guessing it’ll show up online somewhere– Archies, can I count on you guys to link here on MJ’s when it does?

And if Cook can sell a million, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be the first AI winner in three years to achieve that. Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s getting really close but it hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t happened yet. Even a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“lowlyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ million is a tough number to reach these days.

I think million is a reasonable goal for DC in this day and age. Jordin’s definitely going to get there soon, and DC’s not saying he’s aiming to get there within a year. As as been rehashed a bit in the DC threads (hee, those are fun), rock tends to move more records than singles, so I think in that sense, DC’s album sales trajectory will look a bit different from Jordin’s. Jordin’s three singles have been doing amazing, and IMO, the rest of her album’s not that great, so I think her album sales are pretty remarkable.

I can’t believe how excited I am about seeing DC on ET and Archie on VH1! Except for the couple radio interviews (just voice) of Archie and like a couple super-short vlogs, I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve seen the Davids. Miss them! Can’t wait till all their promo ramps up in November.

That’s a great article on Blake in Philly.com. I’m glad he admits that the album was only 70% of what he wanted accomplished because it was rushed. Talk about ADD. I think he gets a bad rap for being a jerk or whatever, but I think he’s just incredibly frank. I really enjoyed him on the show whenever I actually watched that season, and I wish him well– I just hope the second album is better cuz I’d actually buy it!

  • CFIdolsfan

I don’t follow sports as much, but I have to say that, as someone who lives in the Tampa Bay area, I am excited about these playoffs! This has never happened before to the Rays, so we’ll see how they do. It awesome to know that Archie will be singing.

On another note, with all due respect to Phil Stacey’s music site, they don’t always list all the great events he is scheduled to appear at, like tonight: he will be making his 5th appearance at the Grand Ole Opry. I will leave the link for the schedule. You can also hear the broadcast on Opry radio. The link for that is below as well. The hours given are ET, I think, so they would be 1 hour behind in Nashville. I recommend tuning in early so you don’t miss either of the 2 times that he will be on. They will also often interview the artists scheduled to appear before they perform. Also, Phil will be part of the celebrations for the 83rd birthday of the Opry, so it will be a busy evening for him with that and the Opry performances.

Some great news for a popular SYTYCD alumna:

This is from Levine Breaking News:

“MGM has compiled most of the lead cast for its accelerating remake of the 1980 musical “Fame.” Kherington Payne, Kristy Flores, Paul Iacono, Paul McGill, Naturi Naughton, Kay Panabaker, Collins Pennie, Walter Perez and Anna Maria Perez de Tagle have joined.”

I always thought Kherington had star quality. She reminded me of an MGM musical star.

WOW…to think a year ago DC ( like any red blooded 25 yr old guy) would have jumped at the chance for a 3 way with two porn stars….now the poor guy is running in the opposite direction as fast as he can…..LMAO!!!

Geesh getting propsitioned by porn stars….what’s next….a dance re-mix of Majik Rainbowz…….:)

  • grrrr

Plus, Jenna Jameson’s pregnant with twins…so an even more weird-ass threesome, if that’s what the chick meant by dropping her name.

Y’all zeroed right in on the Archie mention, but no one’s mentioned the funny easter egg caption on the cover pic.

    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m trying to figure out what à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“call à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹em in now!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ means too. Kirsten?!?

I got nothin’. Cook’s Mediabase ads continue to mystify me.

they’re going to show David singing right?
and if they don’t i can tell you right now tbs’s site will have it.. just go to http://www.tbs.com and click on the MLB playoffs logo at the top, and then when u get to the page, look for the “hot corner” and watch!

  • cruzceleste

LOL I bet the raiting are going up for this game… so many Archies watching the game just to see were David is sitting… btw HE is sitting behind home plate, wearing a Tampa Bay tshirt…lol Go David!!!!

  • cruzceleste

Just saw it, I liked it, but IÂ ´m not from USA so what did you guys think….

  • terps

I l really iked it, my only complaint it I thought it didn’t need as many runs as he had in it.

  • Aladdin88

I thought he did a great job with it. It’s not an easy song to sing and he did it right on pitch with no music. The crowd seemed to really like it, too.

  • idolfan86

    archie sounded great as always.

  • Davidx2

I was afraid they weren’t going to show it but they did…I think he was awesome! :clap_tb: He looked so adorable in his Tampa Bay jersey with “Archuleta 08″ on the back! :mrgreen_wp:

BTW, he did look like he got a haircut. :razz_wp:

cruzceleste….I’ve been looking and don’t see him sitting behind home plate???

Looks like he inspired TB at least to get a few hits. But I’m still rooting for Boston since my boss’s nephew is the Boston Catcher/Team Captain.

  • cruzceleste

^^Funny part my hold family now knows that I have lost it, when he started singing everybody called my name to let me know he was on… hehehe I guess I can ´t be a closet Archie anymore….

BTW Davidx2, sorry I alreay change the channel, only was watching for the Archuleta, and House MD is on USA…

Sorry to post teo times, from the Tampa Bays rAYS PAGE:

It was a party 11 years in the making, with ESPN analyst Dick Vitale and “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta among the notable attendees.

A season ticket holder, Vitale was on hand with his family and will throw out the ceremonial pitch in Game 2 on Saturday. Archuleta, meanwhile, sat with his brother and father, clutching the words to “God Bless America,” which he was set to sing during the seventh-inning stretch.

The young singer sat several rows behind home plate, eyes wide and grin even wider.

“This is my second baseball game, and the best seat I’ve ever had,” said Archuleta, a first-timer to the Trop. “This is so exciting.”
To those like Morales, who sat and patiently waited through 10 consecutive losing seasons, it was more than that.

    How cute is he???

  • Davidx2

Here’s an excellent video of David’s performance:

Edit: Oops…sorry! I didn’t see that one was already posted.

  • JOJOSIE

Terps. I’m with you, nice voice, nice pitch but more runs than I like. Why do so many singers do all those runs?( Because they can). Archie would sound great singing it just plain like it was written IMO, but what do I know.

  • Grammie Kari

Kherington Payne does have a special Hollywood type of look. Maybe Sandra Dee?

Glad to hear David is having success!
