Daltrey: Contemporary Music Lacks Lead Singers

Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who, says there aren’t many contemporary singers who could “lead” a band, and he partially blames shows like “American Idol” for it.

“A lot of the new people they choose on shows like ‘American Idol’ and things like that — I don’t ever hear lead singers, ” he said. “They always seem to choose to pick people that are great singers, fabulous singers, but they’ve never got the voice that makes a great lead singer.”

First Look: Adam Lambert as Mentor on ‘Majors & Minors’ (Exclusive)

Show producers are staying tight-lipped on when Lambert’s episode will air, no doubt to ensure the Glamberts keep tuning in, but his presence is already being touted as a highpoint of the show’s inaugural season. Says Evan Bogart: “[Adam] specifically wanted to work with the kids on stage presence and delivering the right performance. Guarini finds ‘Chicago’ is right place for him

“A friend had told me about this show in L.A., so I auditioned for it. No one at the time knew anything about ‘American Idol’ or what it would mean or become, ” Guarini said. “I saw it as a chance for me to use the skills I had developed and get some attention that might accelerate a career as a singer and actor.

“History is written, and no one can know what would happen if I had gone to Broadway in 2002 instead of to California. ‘American Idol’ provided a rocket shot that propelled me to national fame. The 10 years of working steadily since appearing on ‘Idol’ have been a blessing.”

‘The X Factor’ breakout Drew Ryniewicz on her surprising Justin Bieber cover

Who came up with that arrangement of “Baby”?
I came up with that all by myself. My mom and my dad are not musically inclined and I don’t have a vocal teacher currently. So I came up with that arrangement all on my own in 20 minutes or so.

So that’s you playing the piano on the track?
No, I found that track online. I don’t play instruments. [ED. NOTE: According to a rep for the show, The X Factor producers refer some contestants to a web site where they can find suggested tracks with which to audition in front of the judges.]
