American Idol top 10 slotted into clear personas for the 2009 tour

They’re regular folks ‘” the guy who changes your oil, the mall girl with muffin top, your server at Applebee’s.

They’re regular, that is, until American Idol plucks them from obscurity so that we may dissect their every move, judge them harshly, hate them and celebrate them. Fun!

American Idol’s Top 10 contestants let us do it in person, performing Tuesday at the St. Pete Times Forum. The show was slick, corporately smarmy and pretty entertaining.

Lambert wants to see where the music takes him

“American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert says he’s seen more than a few admirers show up in eyeliner and painted nails.

“I think a lot of the lady fans like to paint their nails and do all the make-up and wear bright colors,” he says.

He says a lot of his fans are wearing T-shirts with the Egyptian symbol for the Eye of Horus in honor of a tattoo he has on his wrist.

“There’s a lot of other stuff, too, it really makes me smile when I see that; I think its cool,” says the 27-year-old singer who many predicted would win this season’s “American Idol.”

Lil Rounds: Backstage At L.A.’s Staples Center

Lil Rounds has been one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises of the Idols Live Tour for me, personally. She seemed to struggle on the program itself–with the judges’ backlash and often harsh critiques, with some sort of identity crisis, and with numerous showings in the dreaded bottom three–but since season 8 of American Idol wrapped, she has completely blossomed. It’s almost like she’s a different person. She’s performing with newfound superstar confidence, she’s doing choreography, she’s rapping (yes, rapping!), and she’s even rocking a fierce-as-Sasha stage outfit so glittery, I wouldn’t be surprised if Adam Lambert is just a little jealous of her rhinestone-studded tour wardrobe.

American Idol’ Champ Jordin Sparks Says, ‘Keep Paula Abdul!’

With Paula Abdul’s fate on “American Idol” still uncertain, sixth-season winner Jordin Sparks is hoping that someone at the show comes to their senses and decides to keep the judge around.

“I don’t know the inside scoop or anything, but I heard [Abdul's contract might not be renewed] and I was like, ‘Keep Paula!’ ” Sparks told MTV News while promoting her new album, Battlefield. “I don’t even care what’s going on, but she’s one of the original judges.”

‘American Idol’ Hopeful Alexis Cohen Remembered In Online Tributes

Shortly after the hit-and-run death of former “American Idol” auditioner Alexis Cohen on Saturday, tributes to the spunky singer began to pop up around the Web.

One of the first members of the show’s cast to comment was judge Paula Abdul, who’s in the midst of a seemingly contentious contract negotiation that might see her leaving the show. She weighed in Sunday night, tweeting, “My heart goes out to the family of Alexis Cohen. She showed great courage at ‘Idol’ and let’s all send our prayers to her family now.”

Exclusive Interview: Katee Shean of So You Think You Can Dance

Yesterday I had the pleasure of chatting with Katee Shean from Season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance and star/instructor for the new So You Think You Can Dance Get Fit DVDs.

Katee and I talked about how she became involved in the DVDs, the difference between teaching dancing to a DVD audience rather than dancers, and the surprising work out that left her so sore she was barely moving the next day. She also took the time to tell me about her thoughts on Season Five, returning to So You Think You Can Dance for the 100th episode, and that little thing called an Emmy nomination.

Charice Pempengco is a Filipino International Singing Sensation who rose to popularity through YouTube.

This discovery led to several television appearances including The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and then The Oprah Winfrey Show, stunning audiences and bringing both Ellen and Oprah to tears.

Oprah was so impressed by Charice that she called legendary music producer David Foster, who then, without hesitation, turned Charice into his newest protg. Since then Charice has appeared alongside many of today’s top stars such as Katharine McPhee, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bubl, Josh Groban, Alicia Keys and Celine Dion.

Comparing Adan to Kris”Look a text message” lol a way to to miss the stampede of overzealous fans that make the scene from the movie “Airplane” w/ the reporters seem lax..

Daivd Cook band member leaving is not a new thing and I am sure a new member would be chosen..Him being on the August 7th thing the label put money into him the current cd sales are losing some steam and a new one is on they way probably so why not have his name out their more on tv..I can can guess thier is a very high possibility that Dc will be on Ai next few years .

Jive maybe a good fit for Kris Allen they seem at least in some cases to be more into developement of artist then w/ Ai brand make money fast and now..(fast and now does give a new meaning to pimping though)

From “Lambert wants to see where the music takes him”

Like most of the finalists, he looking ahead to the end of the tour and the release of his album, a mix of all styles of music.

“It will be a diverse collection of pop, rock, jazz, blues, ballads and everything,” he says.

First time jazz and blues were on his list of genres. Maybe that the Memphis influence.

Forget any talk about him becoming a Broadway star. He toured in “Wicked” and performed in other stage productions before “Idol.”

“Now I want to be me,” he says. “I don’t want to play a character. I want to see where the music takes me.”

This is the first time that I have seen Adam say that he just wants “to be me.” and not play a character. That is so nice to see vs. some of the prior comments about getting to wear costumes and dress up, and getting to act like a rock star.

Hopefully, by the end of the tour he will be completely comfortable being himself and not feel like he needs to play a “character” anymore.

  • suebrody

I can’t wait to see Adam “rock star” Lambert. He has stated that he likes to dress up and act like a rock star. Now we’ll get to see how that turns out. Not that I mind seeing him in the Tour vids right now. ;-) I am beyond excited about his forthcoming album…

  • Vada

    dreamy acoustic winner Kris Allen

Ok, the writer for Tampabay.com was half right. Kris is dreamy, but his set is not all acoustic. It is half electrified, which makes me wonder if she didn’t cut out early?

  • weareallinnocent

^^No, she probably just fell asleep, hence the “dreamy” part. LOL j/k

Writers choose shorthand catchy over comprehensive. Readers like that. :-) Plus, sometimes just playing an acoustic guitar qualifies as “acoustic.” I’m not sure anyone denies that his acoustic Heartless cover won the competition for him, so there’s that too… Finally, I don’t know about most folks, but “acoustic” is what makes him “dreamy” to me — same goes for David Cook. Love me some acoustic Dave…

    Ok, off to dream…

  • LisaE

I have no idea who the kid is, but a 12 year old is opening for Leona Lewis? Seriously? Did she get any say in that? That just seems really weird. She needs to exert some control over her career.

That is so nice to see vs. some of the prior comments about getting to wear costumes and dress up, and getting to act like a rock star.

The costumes, losing himself in the “rock star persona”…that is Adam. It’s what comes naturally to him. He’s not acting during WLL, he’s definitely feeling it. Just because he’s a nice guy off-stage doesn’t make his on-stage persona any less real. Just a different side of him.

Simon Cowell picks Shaheen Jafargholi to support Leona Lewis

OK…the Mom in me is going Looney Tunes again. Here we have an apparently nice and sweet 12 year old who Simon is going to shove out into the “music” universe so that the kid will burn up like an overbright star tends to do.

A source said: “Simon is convinced Shaheen can be a global superstar.”

Leona’s tour is planned to include 14 months of concerts, with the choreographer of Jacko’s London O2 arena gigs also on board.

The stress of a world tour and 14 months of it is damn hard for anyone, but a 12 year old kid. But then, Simon sees a few more million flying into his pocket so damn the “harm” it may do and full speed ahead.

I’m not saying that this kid doesn’t deserve his chance to shine…but I think that nice and slow and “turtle-ish” would be much more appropriate than turning him into the rabbit trying to win the race.

  • Squirrely

Shaheen didn’t impress me much when he sang at MJ memorial. I agree it is odd to have him touring with Leona Lewis.

  • Q3

Shaheen is a BGT runner-up. So it’s another Simon Cowell cross-promotion.

He’s not just any 12-year old kid. He was part of the Michael Jackson tour cast and sang at his Memorial. Here some more info about him:

  • Adamdebomb

I think Shaheen will be fine. He seems to thrive on the attention, doesn’t let stress get to him-he is like a mini Adam Lambert, and performing is what he seems to love to do. Even if he is no longer around in a few years, he will have had this tour and brief time in the sun. Go for it Shaheen!

Yes, playing a “rockstar” is role-playing to a certain extent. But it’s different than playing a role in a musical that someone else has written for you. He’s performing on his own terms without the filter of a written part.

LOL. And back in the 80′s when Jon Bon Jovi and co. were spraying a bottle of Aqua Net into their hair each night and pulling on their leopard print spandex, they were still essentially being themselves. Even while being a fashion “don’t” in a ridiculous costume.

Okay, so I don’t actually care if Adam is or is not playing a part. I just like making fun of Hair Bands.

  • colette

The 12-year Shaheen’s audition is here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVU4IkzMNIo

As Simon would say SO-RRY — I just personally hate the idea of taking a 12-year old out of school, away from his peers, and pushing him into a major tour. He’s a good singer, but he hasn’t even hit puberty!

And attention? Sure, all little hams love attention. But the buzz gets very, very intrusive very fast.

I may be in the minority here, but I feel like the road is littered with the warped and shattered dreams of many juvenile “stars” pushed by their overly ambitious parents into transient celebrityhood. Not always, but too often it ends badly for the children — who become the main breadwinner in the family, and who have a very hard time making the transition into adulthood once out of their kid years.

It doesn’t surprise me that Simon is happy to exploit the child star craze, any more than it surprises me that he’s happily exploited the psychologically ill-equipped Susan Boyle and her instant stardom. But it does make me gag… :tongue2_tb:

  • lulwut

A source said: ‘Simon is convinced Shaheen can be a global superstar.’

This sounds familiar. Is Simon already recycling his scripts?

Maybe, like what Kelly did during her Breakaway period. But that’s very organic just like any process of superstardom. She’s not fresh out of a talent show.

There is a big difference between playing a broadway character….someone else’s lines and a musical that doesn’t have anything to do with who a person is and “real life” where you get to “play” with your own persona.

Adam doesn’t want to be a character in Hair, or Wicked, or the 10 Commandments. He wants to dress up as Adam Lambert and entertain the crowds. Dressing up and being a “broadway character” don’t have anything to do with each other.

Adam doesn’t have to act like a rock star. From this tour, he is a rock star, the fans are treating him like one, and the articles are calling him a rock star. MJ don’t know if this has been posted or if this is where I post this but:

Found this interesting take about the Adam Lambert song in the 2012 movie. from Billy Masters of Windy City Times.

    http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/gay/lesbian/news/ARTICLE.php?AID=21948

Sometimes intriguing casting happens behind the scenes. For instance, getting chosen to sing a song in a film can be quite a coup. And we can tell you exclusively that Adam Lambert has signed such a deal. Roland Emmerich has produced and directed such blockbusters as Independence Day and Godzilla. His latest project, 2012, is due out Nov. 13 and is one of those star-studded end-of-the-world flicks’”with a Mayan or two thrown in for good measure. Lambert just went into the studio to record a track for the flick’”and Emmerich was impressed enough to consider using it for the closing credits. Bravo!

This is the most detailed thing I found written on the matter besides the blog post from the drummer from Meatloaf.

Closing credits, impressive. I hope Adam’s track makes it. I wonder if that tune will be leaked before the movie comes out. It seems everything Adam seems to surface, one way or another. I also wonder if it is good, it can be released as a single.

From the David Cook Yahoo interview:

Now he plays a few times a month, largely depending on his tour routing.

So, does this explain his seemingly non-sensical tour route? He’s played Iowa, with a population of about 3 million, something like 6 times, but hasn’t ventured into northern New England or Upstate NY more than once (hasn’t even played Boston), has been all around Alabama, but not in it (population 4.6 millionish), has only 1 date scheduled for Arizona (pop 6 million)… Is he really using the tour as an excuse to try out new golf courses? :devil_tb:

  • Q3

Lambert just went into the studio to record a track for the flick’”and Emmerich was impressed enough to consider using it for the closing credits. Bravo!

Wow! I hope that this is true and that it ends up on the credits. I was wondering how Emmerich would use a song by Adam in a movie since he typically uses melodramatic classicial-electro fusion scores and no vocals in his films. Credits make a lot of sense.

My guess if it is good, it will be released as a single before his album release and before 2012 opens. And it looks like plan is to release Adam’s album in mid-November which ties in perfectly with 2012′s 11/13/09 worldwide release date.

  • Squirrely

Hope Adam’s track can be used even just for the closing credits (people usually are leaving during closing credits, right?)

Yeah but if the song is good I usually stick around a few seconds longer to hear it. Also with movies these day the credits usually have some extra’s in them – like Iron Man for example- that more people tend to stick around to see if something comes up.

  • isisdagmar

You know maybe if this all pans out the song will be an x-tra track on his album for Itune’s download. Good marketing ploy.

    From today’s Arkansas Times:

This is part of a long article about “Bests” — Best Cake, Best Museum, Best authority among local judges on the Gunfight at the OK Corral, etc.

Best Kris Allen career move. ‘They kind of have some stipulations on what they’re supposed to do with these songs and so they have to write the words a certain way and it’s supposed to have this nice feeling. To have your first single be something that you weren’t a part of writing, it’s a little bit weird, but you can’t complain.’ That’s what Kris Allen had to say, soon after becoming ‘American Idol,’ about ‘No Boundaries,’ the so-called ‘coronation song’ on ‘Idol’ that he was obligated to record as his debut single. Of course, what he was really saying is, charged with writing an inspirational ballad, the ‘Idol’ songwriters pooped out tripe they tried to pass off as filet mignon, and woe is me, contractually speaking, if I complain. The song continues to haunt us on the radio, but mercifully, after audiences received the song unenthusiastically in the early dates on the Idols Live! Tour, ‘No Boundaries’ ‘climb mountains’ and ‘weather hurricanes’ no more. As we saw last Saturday (see review this issue), it’s been replaced by the infinitely better ‘All These Things I’ve Done,’ by the Killers. Now, if Kris can keep ‘No Boundaries’ off his debut album, fit in several triumphant anthems like ‘All These Things’ and stay out of the John Mayer/Jason Mraz ghetto of inoffensive pop, he’ll be on his way.

Well don’t know if anything is 100% reliable but Billy Masters is a respected columnist. You can go to Wikipedia and there is a whole section on him. So he is no slouch or Perez Hilton.

Quote from Wikipedia: “Masters’ style is more light hearted and comedic than most gossip columnists. However, he has broken a number of stories that have been picked up by mainstream publications.” “Masters is often quoted on Page Six of the New York Post, and is frequently featured in such publications as People, Entertainment Weekly, the Village Voice, US Magazine, Playbill, etc. He is a regular guest on radio and television talk shows.”

This could be an interesting way they could “test the waters” on Adam’s potential international appeal and success. But the song would have to be great and would have to be chosen. (but if I where 19/RCA I would do my best to make this happen, especially given that the producer is interested in the song on some level)

I would think that Sony will make sure there is a tie-in. Even if only a piece of Adam’s song is used at the very end of the credits. IMO Adam’s theatrical style is really suitable for both an End of the World theme and Roland Emmerich, and the song might just fit really well.

I also wonder what Meatloaf has to do with all this. Since his band was at the recording session with Adam, perhaps Meatloaf wrote the song?

If Adam’s song is chosen, and if it is good, and if it is original and plays for the first time during the movie, it can be considered for an Oscar. No credit would go to Adam…it would be the songwriting team but it would be impressive, nevertheless. Not counting my chickens just wishful thinking.

And oftentimes the “song” for the movie is inserted into the DVD release as a video done by the singer. So good things could happen. I can only hope.

  • BeckyMD

I would think that Sony will make sure there is a tie-in. Even if only a piece of Adam’s song is used at the very end of the credits.

I sometimes sit through the whole credits to see if there is extra perk. Yah, there are usually more than one song for the credits. I think it’s still very impressive even if Adam’s song is just used at the very end. If the song is chosen, I won’t move my butt until I hear Adam’s voice coming from behind the big screen.

ETA given the budget and genre of the movie, I guess it’ll also be released on IMAX where the sound system will be great. Imagine embracing and bathing in Adam’s voice…

Sunn, Adam mentions his international fans quite a bit. People must have told him the interest is out there. This is why he talks about his album having a world-wide appeal, and at least one track is supposed to be for his international fans. I hope Adam has a good selling album, because he said he really wants to tour outside of the US (as well as touring in the US, that is).

He may not know it but “Mad World” is in heavy rotation on radio in the Phillipines. They are also playing Kris’ “No Boundaries”. :( Sorry Kris, but they like NoBo in the Phillipines!?!

    CathyMK:

So, does this explain his seemingly non-sensical tour route? He’s played Iowa, with a population of about 3 million, something like 6 times, but hasn’t ventured into northern New England or Upstate NY more than once (hasn’t even played Boston), has been all around Alabama, but not in it (population 4.6 millionish), has only 1 date scheduled for Arizona (pop 6 million)’ ¦ Is he really using the tour as an excuse to try out new golf courses?

If so he’s doing a crappy job! Quick…someone forward him the link for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail!

I should research this before posting, so with the caveat that I’m not sure about this, I believe that the Academy disqualifies a song that only plays over the end credits. So it wouldn’t be eligible for an Oscar, sadly. The rules about songs are always in flux, though. In fact, the scuttlebut is they may eliminate the Best Song category altogether.

Hey fellow posters I only posted the Billy Masters column to let people know that there is some credibility in the speculation of Adam having a song in the movie 2012. Talking about Oscars and performing at them is putting that proverbial horse so far out in front of the cart. I would be happy if the song Adam recorded is used in the movie.

Mraz and Mayer are both respected, multi-platinum selling artists. Kris should consider himself lucky if he ends up in the same “pop ghetto” as them. I’m much more worried about him ending up in the bland “pop ghetto” that includes Nick Lachey, Britney Spears, and all of the other Jive sound-alikes. Seeing Cage the Elephant and Apocalyptica on the list of Jive artists does give me some hope though.

This years rules include a way to eliminate the category in a year with no good songs.

In a bold move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently decided to place more rigid qualifications for its Best Original Song category. Academy voters will now rank songs and only those that average an 8.25 out of a scale of 6-to-10 will make the cut. If no songs average that score, then the Academy will skip the category for the year.

    Official Academy Rule:

    “II. Original Song:
An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. There must be a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually presented) of both lyric and melody, used in the body of the film or as the first song in the end credits.”

Of course, right now, all we have is a song that was recorded that might be in 2012 and might be used over the end credits.

One of the reasons I like to watch the Oscars is to see the songs performed live! I sure hope they don’t get rid of that category. I know this is all rainbows and puppies talking here, but it would be terrific if the 2012 song was nominated and Adam could perform it on the Oscars. I know, I know and the yes, tooth fairy does exist!

I thought I had read that the reason Bruce Springsteen’s song from The Wrestler didn’t get nominated this year was because of a rule disqualifying songs that only play over the credits. But if what you posted is the current rule, that’s obviously not the case.

Will the reason Bruce’s song did not make the Oscar’s is because it did not receive the 8.25 rating. There was big controversy because it did not make the cut especially since it won the Golden Globe. The rating thing lends to the Idea you could rate a song purposely low in order to make sure it does not make the cut if you feel that it would compete with you.

Giving studios with bigger pockets a possible up on this category.

One of the security guards we talked to before the show in Tampa last night said that 10 people got to meet with Adam prior to the show and actually eat dinner with him. I remember Adam mentioning in a recent interview that he wanted to do that with his fans. I’m glad he got his chance. Just sad we didn’t get our chance to meet him after the concert.

Ughhh. How can the Jonas Bros be so successful? Have you heard them sing? Same with Miley.

  • HoldMe

Yea Jobros are bad, were insanely awefule last yr on idol. Miley sings better then Taylor Swift who is huge and laughable spears. Music isnt about voice or good songs anymore, just crappy computerized nonsense-
i know ur all in denial but every description of adams album=crappy computerized club nonsense-tho he’s suppose to be a rock god from him singing 1 rock song

  • Sherena

Adam sang a lot of rock songs/ put a rock edge on songs during his run on the show, but he’s indicated that he’s going to go more pop/dance on his album, which is a smart decision if he wants to succeed long term outside of the AI fanbase.

As for Taylor Swift–she has a terrible voice, but she shouldn’t be included in the same category as the JoBros, because she can really write. And that’s the only reason she made it– she slowly gathered attention and built a fanbase from her self written songs. Otherwise she wouldn’t have been given a chance in the industry. As for Britney… she was one hell of a performer. Still is–can’t dance as well as she used to, but has charisma in spades.

Thanks for posting the concert box scores. This set looks pretty good except to Utah. Also, I’m surprised that they didn’t do better in Tulsa since it’s so close to Arkansas and the only one Little Rock concert — sold out in 1 hour.

The show should start in about half an hour. Any word about what happened to Adam last night? I wonder if Sarver was instructed to remain mum about the whole thing. I have a feeling they are going to sweep all this under the rug.

I thought M&G was right after the show, unless they are doing this before because of the weather. And wha’ the heck is that red thing Adam is wearing?

  • Q3

Looking at the tour schedule and ticket sales to date, I am really puzzled why there are so few concerts in the South. Looks to me like they could have put another show in the South. There are only two concerts east of the Mississippi River to North Carolina and south of Cincinnatti and Columbus, Ohio: Memphis (on the river) and Atlanta.

    Atlanta is sold out.

Memphis had to be at least 85% sold out.

Since AI viewership is concentrated in the South, I really wonder what they were thinking. And why there isn’t a show in Alabama or New Orleans?

There are a couple of other odd omissions – Houston and Las Vegas.
But there was a show in Tulsa.

I also wonder what Meatloaf has to do with all this. Since his band was at the recording session with Adam, perhaps Meatloaf wrote the song?

Meat Loaf probably doesn’t have anything to do with the song. He’s always at Rob Cavallo’s house (where Adam recorded the track) because Rob is producing his new album.

  • BestAI

  • Kirsten

And why there isn’t a show in Alabama or New Orleans?

Because Alabama only shows up when they have an Idol?

    S4: 11,004 : $493,458 : Bo Bice
    S5: 13,041 : $616,183 : Taylor Hicks
    S6: 3,775 : $243,397 (38.9% of tickets available were sold)

They only visited New Orleans once, when George Huff was on the show (it’s his hometown)

    S3: New Orleans: 4,891 : $218,091

The did visit Bossier City, LA in S7.

That Tampa Bay review is pretty condescending(while trying too hard to be witty) in my opinion to a lot of the idols…I would have respected her opinion had I not come across a YT tube of the writer singing with her band (Super Secret Best Friends–what?!)….she could be on AI…as one of those horrible auditioners who think they’re all that.

  • jms

I thought M&G was right after the show, unless they are doing this before because of the weather.

The idol’s days start early (somewhere between noon and 1pm I believe) with Press before the show (5 idols are selected in a rotation, but I believe they’ve had Adam do every one so far), M&G before the show, some idols also go outside to sign autographs. Then showtime. Then post show M&G and I think more press. Then outside to sign autographs. Then back to hotel or onto the next city. Plus, they try to fit in things like special visits for publicity (Graceland, Ford car bit). On top of that Kris, Adam and Allison are also trying to write and record their albums so they get even less sleep and usually don’t get days off when the others do.
