Idol Headlines for 09/29/09

Developing story in the Philippines… Katy Perry was scheduled to have a one-night concert in Manila at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds, along with Boys Like Girls opening for her, on October 3rd. Due to extenuating circumstances (i.e. the recent Ondoy Typhoon devastation) the concert has been pushed back to the 17th of October. Proceeds from the rescheduled concert will go to benefit victims of Typhoon Ondoy by way of the Red Cross. But the best part of the story is that David Archuleta will be joining them! Final confirmation is still pending.

I was wondering, there’s been some comparison between Kris and Adam and how they’re doing in pre-orders. Adam’s pre-orders are definitely a really cool potential sign of the interest in him, but how much do Kris’s pre-orders mean given that I would think that a lot of the really dedicated fans, who are now ordering Adam’s album, would probably have ordered Kris’s album a while ago with that itunes pass thing? Or are the numbers not really comparable somehow? I’m only asking because all these articles are making comparisons and I don’t know how much the comparisons really mean.

It’s not a banner. It’s an small icon placed amongst about 20 other icons of other singles on the “what’s hot” list.

You need to click on the ‘Singles’ button to see it under ‘Music’.

You get Kris’s album w/ the iTunes pass, which is why I bought it. You don’t get the single, however, which is why you either have to buy it or don’t have it. As far as I know, you don’t get any singles; you have to wait till the actual album is released in November. Wonderful news that he is starting to get airplay!

I am glad the Post picked up the Adam’s pre-sales, since they dissed him during the Tour, if I am correct.

ETA: Duh, I didn’t realize the Post article was yours, MJ. Kudos. Clearly, you were not the reviewer who hated on Adam.

Kris ITunes pass INCLUDES his album. It does NOT include LLWD. So I woul definitely think his amazon.com numbers are at least slightly impacted by the fact that a bunch of people not needing to pre-order the album on there since they already know they will be getting it with the ITunes pass.

Meanwhile, LLWD is going back up the charts. At 4 p.m. yesterday (Pacific Coast time), it was at #23 on pop and at #58 overall on Itunes. This morning, at 7:30 a.m. (Pacific Coast time), it is up to #19 and #43, respectively.

The iTunes pass definitely includes Kris’s album. That is why the comparisons between Kris’s and Adam’s Amazon pre-orders are meaningless and misleading. Kris’s numbers on Amazon are not “slightly” impacted by the iTunes pass. They are majorly impacted by it. His album, through the season pass, has been available for pre-order since the finale. Adam’s obviously has not.

Whether it will include the single is another story. It still hasn’t been added to it yet, although there is a small banner on one of the pages advertising Kris’s season pass saying that a new single has been added.

No, it’s $9.99 on amazon.com. It dropped when the barnes and noble price dropped.

And I’m sure Kris’s pre-sales are smaller than they would have been b/c of the iTunes pass. However, as noted, this does NOT include LLWD, so if you want the single now (or didn’t get the pass; I don’t think it’s available anymore), you have to buy the single.

Awww…it is impossible to not smile when you open up the Amazon link and see David A’s smiling little elf face. He was my Mom’s favorite and she was disappointed that his cd was so pop – she will love this though. His voice sounds just beautiful.

Ugh, just can’t see Ryan succeeding Larry King. Larry has a warmth and geniality whereas Ryan seems kind of cold and calculating, and also Ryan has little knowledge of politics or world affairs that I know of. Ryan’s okay on Idol and ET but I think he has his limits. When he hosted the emmys that became very clear to me.

I will take John King over Ryan any day. Ryan was so bad when he interviewed the Idols (or Kris last week, for that matter) that I think he should stick w/ his day and evening jobs. And I am not a Couric fan. I vote for King.

Can anyone recommend a site that discusses the ins and outs of the airplay charts. I know virtually nothing about Hot AC vs top40 and what the difference is between them.

I believe that was because Adam’s album was in the top 10, and had a sales velocity change (dropped from #2 to #3) and that triggered someone to do a price check. After it was back to market price, it went back up to #2.

It doesn’t matter what the listed presale price is, Amazon charges the lower price at the time of shipment anyway. Most regular Amazon buyers know this, but some Idol fans may not. IMO Idol fans are pretty sharp and I bet a lot of them knew the price would drop.

Well, well, well!! I just noticed something. Disney Dreaming’s website, which is linked in the headlines above, has added a picture of David to their banner. Hehehe! How sweet. He was never there before! I’m tickled pink.

I thought it was weird myself, HOTHOTHOT. I was looking for the Carrie U. thread and came across all these random posts. For a minute there, I thought I clicked on the Headlines Thread.

Really, it just means Adam is getting a ton of media coverage without putting effort into it. Great buzz can mean great sales-usually.

IDK – I tend to agree that this may be just what they wanted – free publicity, essentially. They don’t have to put any money out there, but he’s getting around in the media (similar to how SuBo got a lot of headlines right after she skyrocketed in the Amazon pre-sales.) The significance of the Amazon chart for Adam has never been in the sales numbers, but in the media marketing for his album. What we’re seeing today in the news is why I was squeeing when he climbed the charts.

If anyone has purchased an idol album for more than $10 they have been out right robbed. Every album has dropped to $9.99 before release date and that is what they have sold for when initially shelved at the retail outlets. In fact, many of the albums have dropped to $7.99 for Black Friday and the weekend.

Actually, that is why pre-sales are typically pretty bogus. The “in” crowd knows how the game is played and will pre-order, whenever, just to be able to “forget about it” and just wait for their CD (which will ship at the lowest price, regardless). Non savy shoppers will breathlessly wait for the “lowest” price and will then pre-order.

Amazon and I-tunes DO NOT IMPACT each other. People who buy on I-tunes wouldn’t be perusing Amazon for a hard copy of a CD. They purchase, exclusively, for a digital copy. So, saying that the I-tunes pre-sell has impacted Kris’ Amazon sales is being a little OTT. One doesn’t impact the other.

Besides, we will never be able to compare any I-tunes presell of Adam and Kris (and blessedly so) because of the pre-sale for Kris. Just like we could never compare AI releases from the two because we were never privy to the “during the season” sales.

So, everyone should just bask in whatever sales success Kris and Adam have without regards to each other and more about their success compared to other current and relative “newbies” in the recording business.

I tend to agree – the friday single release definitely hurt initial sales, imo. Fri and the weekend would be the slowest sales days on itunes, and people are looking for the new music on Tuesday (they get the emails, banners on the itunes storefront, etc.) So now people outside us blogging like crazy in idol-land actually know about it

I think there is a definite strategy in the timing of the pre-sale release. Kris’s was released a month ago and around here (this blog) people have been asking why Adam’s wasn’t up yet. I truly believe they waited as long as possible/necessary to reap a maximal harvest from the buzz. Furthermore, if the rumours are correct we’ll see a marketing campaign starting soon, which will further fuel the fire.

Granted, as late as Sunday morning I predicted that the presale would not begin until the promotion had begun because that would increase the chances of the rapid rise on the charts that we’ve seen, which would give the free publicity and interest. So, the actual timing of the release has me a bit surprised but I’m pretty sure they got the effect they were hoping for.
Actually, now I think the best thing they (RCA) can do is to lay low for a while, let the media run with the charting stories, come Thursday let the 2012 promotion (assuming TFM is part of it) kick in and run its course for a while (again assuming that TFM is released as a single), and then release Adam’s album single in the second half of October and go all out with the promotion at that time. I think the buzz right now and even more if TFM comes out as a single with a video will be enough to propel some decent presales without oversaturating the market.
Naturally, I know nothing about these matters …

lob - I agree with this. I think this makes a lot of sense for promotion. Reap the most bang for the buck.

IMO – RCA will promote Adam as it needs to. Free publicity = don’t need to do a thing – just let it ride. If the publicity push is needed (or more of it is needed), then by all means they’ll do it. But why throw money out there when its not necessary, at least at this early stage in the game.

And I do think it WILL be needed, along the lines of what lob suggests above. As Sunn said, no one can sell an album with NO publicity.

I’m with those that say RCA is right to lay low for a bit. I suspect they have a big promotional push planned, but want to let the 2012 roadblock go first and see what (if anything) happens for Adam. 1) I firmly believe that the “adam storm”, to the extent it exists today, is being fueled exclusively by die-hard fans. Those folks aren’t going anywhere.

2) If (and who knows, but if) RCA’s plan is to release the single in late October, while letting TFM do the heavy lifting early in the month, then it probably makes sense to spend less now and go for a blow-out in a few weeks.

3) No one should read too much into my comment about RCA doing the “bare minimum”. I was only suggesting that the less they have to do, the better. I still assume that they will be doing plenty (only not necessarily on the timetable that we may desire).

Marketing….timing is everything.

It is about 60 days until Adam’s album drops and, as yet, it is not completed and has no title and the cover-art isn’t complete because the title isn’t chosen and the title can’t be chosen because all the songs aren’t complete and chosen…and around and around we go. Heck, Kris’ album is about 50 days out and nothing really substantial is known about it yet, either.

I am sure Babs has had her album in the can for many moons now….geesh, she’s had over 3 years to work on it, so marketing now is a very good thing since the album is finalized (and yet she is just now working the talk-show circuit).

I think fans are really being over anxious right now. Why start a big I-tunes and purchase site campaigns when there is NOTHING concrete to sell…if the unthinkable happens and the album has to be delayed that would be real egg on the face for everyone. Personally, I think a good 3 or 4 week campaign is ultimate…a BIG blast is always much more impressive than a lot of little skirmishes. Besides, its the off-line stuff that will sell the albums considering that an online community is less than 25% of actual sells.

Come November we will have print media, on line media, visual media doing there thing. Do it too early and the “in store” shoppers will forget what they heard about Adam’s or Kris’ albums. Time it right and they will be chomping on the bit come the end of November. Patience is a real virtue…but everyone seems to forget that Halloween and Thanksgiving come before Christmas.

60 hours!! Are you serious? Unless I get some news by the end of the day, I may have to resort to making origami swans again. A dark period in my life that I would rather not revisit.

But seriously, I’m not at all sure about the 2012 promo featuring the song. Also, unless the producers plan on releasing the song as a single fairly soon, I don’t see how Adam marketing comes into the film’s efforts.

I don’t understand why so many people are upset at RCA? Y’all do understand that they are a HUGE label and have more than one artist on their roster? They cannot devote 24/7 to adam lambert, and the truth is that there are artists: David Cook, Daughtry, kelly Clarckson, and others who take precedence over Adam. I’m sure that when the time comes RCA will give Adam all of the attention he deserves, but for now I think people just may have to sit tight. Reality….

CD’s, for the average purchaser, are not “thought out, months in advance gifts”. People will purchase their personal digital or hard copy CD when an album first hits (if they are a fan) but for MOST people CD buying is usually reserved for stocking stuffers or last minute gifts or for people you don’t know what to buy for. The biggest push for CDs should come mid December….that is when the sales are the largest and the prices tend to climb a bit.

How many people really put in pre-orders for hard copy CDs anymore. Once upon a time that was a big thing….not anymore. With a Target or a WalMart on every friggin corner in this country it ain’t that hard to purchase a CD when you want it. It isn’t like the old days when you had to be first in line to get a CD at your local record store….in fact there aren’t a lot of local record stores anymore. Most CDs (at Christmas time) are impromptu purchases that are more likely to come by CD placement at the check-out counter or nice big stand alone displays with a beautiful and eye-catching poster. Now, I’m sure jive and rca know that and are hopefully working on that.

If I were RCA, I would let the movie take on the pr duties this week, then start the buzz about the single after the movie buzz starts dying down. (especially since they also have some “shooting up at Amazon” and “big charity donation” buzz to go along with that.)

There is a *long* time to go before the holiday buying season is over, and that’s when they really really really have to put on a big push to get the casual fans and the new listeners to buy.

If they let the single name and content leak now, that pr and the free movie et al pr they’re getting this week will just step on each other.

They have weeks and weeks to go when they need to keep Adam in the world’s thoughts, and to do that efficiently — because if they don’t do it efficiently the money comes out of Adam’s pocket! — I think it’s by far the better course to just let one piece of pr dominate at a time, at least until those closing weeks.

We’re only in the barest beginnings of the promotional period for the album yet — still nearly two months out, and nearly *three* months out from the end of the holiday gift-buying season. If you rush it, you will lose the people who don’t start paying attention until closer to the actual sales date — *and* closer to the holiday-buying dates! — and, I would think, gain very little, since the folks who are eagerly awaiting this information now are going to buy Adam’s album anyway.

suebrody, I think the iTunes issue with Kris’s new single not being offered via the Pass is just a typical iTunes snafu. They have numerous glitches on their site all the time. I’ve emailed them, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the song has downloaded to my account before I ever hear back from them. It’s incredibly annoying, however.

But seriously, I’m not at all sure about the 2012 promo featuring the song. Also, unless the producers plan on releasing the song as a single fairly soon, I don’t see how Adam marketing comes into the film’s efforts.

True, we don’t know if TFM is going to be used heavily in the promotion of 2012 and we do not know if it will be released as a single either. But fact of the matter is that Adam’s name and the song title are featured prominently on the movie poster. Now, Adam Lambert is not exactly a well-established artist or household name to the majority of the potential moviegoers. Perhaps he will be in a few years, but now he is not. So why on earth would his name be featured on the poster if they were not going to use the song for promotion?
That’s why I think it is likely that TFM will be part of the 2012 promotion.

Not sure whether or not the song will be used in the promotion, but the prominence of Adam’s name on the movie poster was probably part of the studio’s contract with 19/RCA. For RCA to “lend” him to another label, there would have to be some additional incentive other than just financial.

Aww I just heard an advertisement for Kris’s concert in Napa Valley on my local radio station in Albuquerque. It’s not the first time I’ve heard the ad, but it’s the first time they’ve mentioned Kris along with the other performers!! Sounds like a killer concert and my radio station is giving away a complete package – flight, hotel, concert, spa visit…and other luxuries. Nice.

Prior to today, for Kris’s album they were combining Kris, Daughtry and SuBo. Adam’s release has taken over the Daughtry slot and I bet in a few days, Allison will take over the SuBo slot.

Does anyone else find it strange that Jive would send Kris to London this week. I think I remember Kris saying he will be there a week. How many days does it take to record one song and why did he have to go all the way to London since he has a whole album to get together by October 15. It seems a waist of time this late in the process to throw away a week of time on a single recording. Then the fact that we have gone a whole day without a tweet from him. Allison was able to tweet from Sweden so Kris should be able to from London. There must be something more planned than just a recording session.

Is it just one song he’s recording? It kind of sounds like Kris is working heavily with Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner (Also produce the Script). He said in the VH-1 article, “We got a couple different producers on the album, but there’s a couple songs that [Frampton and Kipner have produced]. And I’m actually going to London to work with them again.” That made me think there were going to be additional songs produced by them in addition to LLWD and the other song mentioned by Kris in the Slezak interview. Am I just reading it wrong?

OK, that Eg White dude has worked with some really good British acts. Lots of blue eyed soul. That’s more like it! Because I ain’t been impressed with what I’ve been hearing so far.

Eg White sounds cool. I heart “Chasing Pavements.”

I looked up as many Titanic trailers as I could find on youtube to see if ‘My Heart Will Go On” was included. Answer? Not in either the 30 second US TV spot I found or the full-length US trailer. But yes in the German trailer.

You will notice in the US trailers that the movie was released Dec 19, 2007. (IMDB says it had its US premiere in LA on Dec 14th, and was released in Japan on Nov. 1 and the UK Nov. 18.) Wiki says that Celine’s song was released Dec 8 in Australia and Germany, but not till January everywhere else. (And that’s weird to me, that Germany got first dibs on the song even though the movie didn’t show up there till Jan 8, 1998.) Obviously, people would’ve heard the song by the time it hit radio, except in Germany, where the song may’ve already been a hit before they saw the movie.

So… No clue if that’s the way movie moguls always do things or if they’ve changed their strategies in the wake of iTunes and youtube.

Aww I just heard an advertisement for Kris’s concert in Napa Valley on my local radio station in Albuquerque. It’s not the first time I’ve heard the ad, but it’s the first time they’ve mentioned Kris along with the other performers!! Sounds like a killer concert and my radio station is giving away a complete package ‘“ flight, hotel, concert, spa visit’ ¦and other luxuries. Nice.

If Kris is in London for a week, they they are probably doing more than 1 song. I wonder if Kris will also be working with Danny O’Donoghue and Mark Sheehan when he is in London.

Is it just one song he’s recording? It kind of sounds like Kris is working heavily with Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner (Also produce the Script). He said in the VH-1 article, ‘We got a couple different producers on the album, but there’s a couple songs that [Frampton and Kipner have produced]. And I’m actually going to London to work with them again.’ 

I only like ‘Mercy’ and I really love One Republic/Ryan Tedder’s cover of it.

I enjoyed the whole thing, but I also love Amy Winehouse. (They both remind me of Dusty Springfield and I have nearly everything Dusty recorded.)

Listened to all the listings some are pretty good. I actually think “Sad song” is one of the weakest songs on the album. There are two or three songs that would have been better 1st singles. IMHO Overall liked it. May (heavy underline of may) buy it

I just looked on Amazon and it is true, Adam is now number 1! Wow. Beating out Babs and all the other legends in the list is amazing. Imagine when his music actually hits the airwaves, I have a feeling there is going to be a media blitz!

Now I could be wrong so please don’t shoot me…but I think the difference is no one not even RCA announced that Adam’s album was available for pre order. I think David and Clay had official announcements prior to there number one pre order rankings. (and there is some talk that David was only number one in the MP3 chart. if people are talking about his pre idol album.) Regardless it is nice, psychologically very satisfying to see.

I hope this strong presale for Adam holds up because these sales will go into his first week’s sales and Idol alums usually peak in their 1st week of release.

A strong presale on Amazon is usually a very good sign but it can also be fueled by having a lot of very passionate fans. I am amazed by how quickly Adam hit #1 because he didn’t have the huge YouTube numbers that SuBo had, and he hasn’t released anything. People have heard both SuBo’s lead single and her CD title track.

Susan Boyle had an amazingly strong presale. Thankfully, she is fianlly fading! But I think she will take #1 for week of 11/24/09. Unless we get a ‘miracle”.

FIANLLY! Thank You Suenigma! So David Cook’s album did go up for preorder right after the finale. That’s all I wanted to know. Someone was on EW today saying his pre-order was only a couple of weeks before the album came out. I gotta say though, I think it was a good idea to do the pre-order right after the finale while his popularity was still riding high.

Listened to all the listings some are pretty good. I actually think ‘Sad song’  is one of the weakest songs on the album. There are two or three songs that would have been better 1st singles. IMHO Overall liked it. May (heavy underline of may) buy it

I agree about others being better singles. In a way, Sad Song seemed more in line with A.D.D.’s sound. I’ll definitely be buying it, but then, I am a sucker for retro.

Are you weary from being wary of Amazon? I would be weary too, trying to wade through their records. And I’d also be leery of using any data about Amazon pre-sales as an indication of overall success.

And much as I dislike Clays’s music, if Adam had Clay’s level of success in terms of numbers for his first album, I’d be beyond thrilled.

But I will say, Amazon’s music section and share were even smaller then. I remember the days when music and video were first added to Amazon. Oh the olden days…when Clay was relevant as well. Time waits for no one and there are only 86 blah blah blah thousand seconds in a day!

We are not talking, at least not me, about overall success. I am happy that after 3 days on pre-order without any promo he got to number one. That ´s it.

Well I havn’t pre ordered anything yet but I plan on buying the album.. and I am sure there are a lot of other people who have yet to show there interest on any form of chart.. Congrats Adam.. YEAH!!

Oh no, Amazon actually is very big…depending the parameter you’re using. But for music, it’s not a majority share of the market in the US. It does still have a substantial enough presence in the music and movie worlds, and around the world. In books of course, it still dominates.

So while iTunes might have the largest share of online music in the US (or all music purchased at this point) Amazon still does a very good business with their music.

So while I totally agree that gives no real indications of Adam’s future success, still it’s not NOTHING. It’s still a fairly cool thing…for now. And as a fan, I’m pretty happy about it. Even realizing the realities of the situation.

LMAO! Those writers need something to write about and get hits for. Amazon sells less by far than iTunes for digital (tho Amazon is my choice). As far as physical units, it’s not much either. Why would you order from Amazon and wait 3 days after it’s released. yeah some people get physical units a day early even, but my experience has been waiting. And I live in the Chicago metro area. It’s been the same for people I know who live all over the country, metro, suburban or rural. If you want an album the first day it’s out, it’s best to drive to the store and buy it. Here’s some info.

You also must put text before the hashtag. In other words, you can’t start your line with the hashtag item. Also, Twitter considers it spam if you put more than one of the same hashtag items in your tweet and will not count it.

Wal-mart is still the 800 lb gorilla of cd sales market share. It’s the biggest retailer in the world. They own the market share of pretty much any product they choose to sell. Fun fact: on the day that Wal-mart opened their meat counters in the new “Super Wal-marts” it instantly became the largest meat retailer in the world. (I hate walmart with a burning inferno, so I’m ashamed that I know that.

Amazon is indeed the largest online retailer in the world. They do not have the biggest market share in cd’s, because of the people who buy physical cd’s, more than half purchase those in a physical store (again – usually effin Wal-mart).

Of physical cd’s, Amazon’s market share is probably in the 10% area (which is actually quite good if you’re a retailer of any sort). I have no idea what that means for actual units moved in a given time period though.

So, the question is still out there. Did any of the other idol’s debut album hit #1 w/o any promotion or announcement?

I look at Amazon as a random sampling. There are also other outlets selling the album, and I hear they are doing well too. I’m optimistic. Cautious, yet optimistic.

Amazon has dominated the e-tailer space for years now. In terms of profits and market share and even end over end, profitability. All of that being said, it’s shares of various market shares and products, does vary. So a more useful measurement would be comparing the market shares for music in the US, and other major consuming countries. So not just the share of music overall, but break-out US; JP; FR; GB; etc., shares of their market. For example, while the Amazon share of the music market may be 8% (just a number I seem to recall) it’s market share may be 20% in JP (totally made up number, I have no idea anymore). I mean, just saying.

And yes as evidenced by here, flail as we might, most Adam fans here seem very aware that this metric of Amazon’s is a nice thing, but an indicative thing..

There is NEVER any huge announcement or promotion when the Idols albums go up for pre-order on Amazon. I think it is just heavily invested fans like us checking in everyday and then spreading the news within the fandom. In any event, it was a cool feat for Clay, Cook, Adam, and, I believe, Archie to accomplish.

What I like about what is happening with Adam is that the fans are now trumpeting the feat to the mainstream media, which is in turn providing Adam with a great deal of added publicity. Make hay while the sun shines.

Sort of like what was done with Cook’s Billboard accomplishment:
“One week after being declared the winner with a record-breaking 56 percent of the nearly 100 million votes cast, Cook rewrote chart history when 11 of his songs debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart ‘” the highest number of new entries in a single week by an artist since the Beatles in 1964.”

Ultimately it wasn’t quite as impressive as it sounded, but he got lots of great PR from it.

The September 2008 weekly average was 6.74 million units
Assume September 2009 album sales down 20%
Estimated September 2009 weekly average of 5.4 million units
Amazon has apx. 18% market share of CD albums
So Amazon should sell about 972,000 CD albums a week in September

The #1 spot varies widely in number of units. Monday during business hours is usually the highest numbers, but even that is a small hourly number. A strong album presale is usually equal to about 100,000 total units. Whitney Houston just had a 300K unity first week based on a really stong presale that lasted 40 days and a #1 opening week. In other words, Amazon matters but a few days doesn’t amount to a lot.

Well, to be fair, the album only hit #1 after all those articles today. That’s promo and announcement, even if not official.
Anyway, I don’t remember any announcement for David’s album. I think I read it here on MJs.

For Cook (who also hit #1), there is really no comparison because his album was put up just a few days after the finale IIRC — when popularity was at an all-time high. In my meanderings of old forums, the info about pre-orders seemed to be getting passed along by word of mouth (or blogs like MJs) because I don’t even know if it was even official yet that he signed with RCA. I recall that that info took a few days/weeks to be confirmed. In fact, some peeps on TWoP were not ordering on Amazon because they doubted the info because so little had been finalized yet (i.e., label, producers, etc.) But as I said above, you can’t really compare because Cook’s album was put up on Amazon RIGHT after the finale.

By the way, important tip for Adam, Krsi and Alison fans: If there is ANY change in the release date or any details of the release, including actual delivery date to your house, etc., Amazon will send you an email asking you to confirm that you still WANT the album even with the changed dates/details. A number of Cook fans complained last year that their pre-orders got cancelled by Amazon because they didn’t respond to the emails. This almost happened to me until I saw a post from another fan who alerted me that I should pay attention to the email.

Well to me this is not relevant. All it means it was a great accomplishment for Clay and David too. It does not take away that it is any less of a wonderful achievement for Adam. It is mostly the news pundits that are saying it is an amazing accomplishment and indicating that it is not something that happens often. None of the journalist acknowledged that it has happened prior. It did well enough to get Cook his first platinum record, sell the most for an AI winner’s song, and is still played frequently on radio. So, as someone once said, never underestimate the power of the magic rainbow.

LOL I think I remember that, but I think that was when the single was released. Amazon sent emails about it, turned out they send many of those emails. But that was the peak of fanwars.

I think this shows Adam will have great first week sales, no doubt about that, just like David and Clay. Even if Amazon doesn’t translate in many units, it shows the big interest and buzz.
But I know Cook was ahead of Beyonce and Nickelback on Amazon and Itunes (and overall digital albums) and still sold less than those two overall… it doesn’t really translate into a #1.

umm… except for the fact that at the time the preorder went up TOML wasn’t that popular of a song, even with the idol fanbase. A lot of people were dissing it and the cheesy lyrics.

I think Tony said yesterday Clays became available for pre-order on July 4th.

Yes, it came available about 4 days after Clay’s Rolling Stone cover which had an issue date of July 10th and a newstand date of June 30th I believe. Looked it up yesterday.

LOL. The constant parsing to make sure that the bragging rights for Adam’s Amazon accomplishment as one-of-a-kind is kind of hilarious. Yes, yes, pjd, Adam is officially the first (deep breath) Idol runner-up who had no charting single out who reached #1 on Amazon matter of (two) days all without any official announcement or discernible promo (except for media which picked up his reaching #2) and who had the pre-order for his album put up on Amazon on a Sunday and not right after a finale. (ETA: and not right after his Rolling Stone cover just came out. Heh.)

The accomplishment is to be lauded for sure and Adam has already had a few “first evers” for an Idol, so I think he’s doing great under any calculation. And all of these accomplishments bode well for a strong opening and eventual strong career. But the constant ratcheting up of any Adam-related story into the “only Idol to ever . . . ” spin just invites eye-rolling IMO.

I just gotta say I agree with those who say David Cook is their favorite Idol twitterer. Since I added him, he has made me laugh more than anyone else. I also really like Archie (and I wasn’t a fan of his during season 7).

I really, really hope David starts trying out some of the new songs live, otherwise I think we all might bust waiting for the next album!

Yes, a lot of people online didn’t like the Magic Rainbow lyric, but that eventually became a term of endearment as TOML proved itself to be a tough little song that just won’t die! It sold 1.2 million copies, reached the top 10 on a bunch of Billboard charts, stayed on the Hot 100 for 20 weeks, and was (and still is) played on a variety of TV shows and events. You don’t achieve all of that without some popularity, LOL. TOML was a success by anyone’s standards.

You should check Cook out. You won’t be sorry. And I don’t think people were pre-ordering David Cook, the Record (DCTR) based upon “Time of My Life.” They were pre-ordering based upon what he did with “Hello,” and “Billie Jean,” and “Always Be My Baby” and “The World I Know.” They were pre-ordering based upon his Idol run and the Billboard explosion afterwards. And, they were pre-ordering based upon crowd pleasing tour performances.

Well, I don’t know how the Adam/Cook/Clay stuff got started, but per my post above, some of it is because fans will ask whether any other Idol besides their fave has ever done XXX before — to which they will, of course, get responses. Alternatively, they’ll say I wonder if any other Idol has done XXX before or say this has got to be the first time that any Idol has done XXX ever — to which they’ll get responses. The thing is that this blog is not a fan board for any one particular Idol so when someone mentions that their fave is unique because of XXX, inevitably another fan with encyclopedic knowledge about their own fave is gonna feel compelled to tell them if that is not the case. It’s just the nature of this blog and, of course, the Idol fandom in general.

So I just got to my home pc, and looked at my itunes and email, and still no real PR for Kris and his single Even in the New Music Tuesday email – nothing. So, it makes me think that by premiering the single on Friday (not the norm) they missed out on actually getting any mention in the new music Tuesday emails. Am I missing something?

It is just CD Album share, not total market share, as I wrote. Data is from Neilsen and from NPD Research.

I used reports for April through August (post Circuit City closure).

Total music market share for Amazon is 11% and growing because there digital business is growing and their share of the remaining physical media business continues to grow (although units are dropping.)

I can’t find any information of their market share of pre-sales but it must be very high — it is core to their business model and is something they used to gain strategic advantage vs. Target and Walmart.

Actually, I’m really surprised at the insecurity I see in some of ALL the Idols’ fans. Anything you say that applies to Adam fans also applies to Kris fans, and Allison fans, and Gokey fans. It really gets tiresome, no matter who’s doing it.

Ya know, I’ve watched AI since season 1. I’ve enjoyed all the ups and downs of it. Some of my favs have won, and some have lost. I’ve dealt with it.

I absolutely love DC. Watched him closely last season and was so happy when he won.

But, I hadn’t found mjs til season 8. OMG, what a difference. Because of this blog, I knew Adam would not win by the time it was down to 3. I still watched until the final moments. I had to get up and walk away. I got over it.

I don’t care about all the technicalities, the numbers, etc. I have total faith that Adam will be a star. He just has that IT factor. I really like Kris and a lot of the other Idols.

I’m not a *flailing* fangirl. I sit in my chair and read this blog and (smugly) say to myself…it’s ok, he’s going there. I have total confidence in Adam. I do get a bit excited at times, when there is news, and I’ll admit that.

Why do I feel this way? Because I just *FEEL* it. That’s all I can say about it. I’m calm about it. I have a good friend who watched AI and feels the same as I do, and maybe even more. And, she has never seen any of the blogs or websites that promote Adam. She just knows. And, she keeps me centered and supports me. Plus, she’s the only one I can talk to that understands, except for the peeps here.

Sometimes, I wish I didn’t know as much as I do, but I still am addicted to this blog. It has totally changed my way of thinking about Idol. That could be a good or a bad thing, I don’t know.

What I do know is that Adam has never disappointed me. I can honestly say that there is not one song that he has sang that I don’t like. I might love some and just like some. That’s understandable too.

I really think Kris is going to find his own place in all of this and go places, as will Allison, Matt and Danny. I wish only the best for the rest of the crew. I would never say anything bad about any of those kids. They have worked hard and they deserve some recognition.

One last thing about being on mjs blog. I have found some new and wonderful music by being here. Am listening to Muse right now, for the umpteenth (?) is that a word? time and I am totally addicted.

The “Daily Anthem” from the Philippines was taken from the wings and the “Lie” and “Billy Jean” performances seem to have been taken directly from the venue feeds (and yes, they are *gorgeous*). It won’t work to take one artist’s sales units and chart rank on Amazon and use it to estimate another artist.

Amazon may sell 25% of Babs album but only 12% of Paramore’s new single.

Wal-Mart sells a lot of Top 10 and Country, and the non-explicit hip-hop/urban titles. But iTune rules the Alt Rock, Explicit and tween/teen markets.

Then throw in the fact that all music retailers do special promotions. So Borders may only have a 2% market share of US Music, but they sold about 6% of the Twillight soundtracks last year because they have a very strong Twillight customer base and did special promotions and parties for the album.

We won’t know the Adam’s numbers until December when the first week’s sales are reported. Although we’ll get some idea when RCA/19 fianlly releases his lead single for the album. But what matters is if he can sell to non-Idol fans — and we won’t know that for 2+ months.

Just like who know what will happen with Kris’s or Allison’s — no one.
