We Are Heroes Wins ‘ABDC’

The all-girl crew beat out the ever-so-sexy Latino salsa group, Afroborike, on ‘Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew.’

‘ABDC’ has pulled all the stops when it came down to choosing the ‘crew-testants’ of season 4.

This year they broke boundaries as finally a crew won that wasn’t a b-boy group. The competition was fierce as both We Are Heroes and Afroborike had a lot at stake and were certainly no stranger to the bottom.

Adam Lambert’s Upcoming Album: Bigger Than The Beatles?

OK, I know that an inflammatory blog title like the one above might create an outcry not unlike the hubbub that ensued when the Beatles’ own John Lennon declared that the Beatles were bigger than God. But here’s a fact: Only a few hours after being listed on Amazon, Adam Lambert’s pre-orderable debut album is already at #2 on the site’s Bestsellers chart…above Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, fellow Simon Cowell-affiliated reality star Susan Boyle (whose own debut comes out the same day as Adam’s, November 24), and–yes–the Beatles.

Concert Review: Michael Johns and Brooke White live at Chop Suey, Seattle, Washington, 9/24/2009

The team up was Johns’ idea, who considers White his favorite of the female contestants he competed against in Idol’s seventh season. White admitted the audiences have been somewhat small, but always enthusiastic. Chop Suey was exactly the kind of club she enjoys playing, as the close quarters allow for much greater intimacy with the audience. Seeming to hold true to the pattern established in the six dates they had already played prior to Seattle, the club was far from packed but those in attendance appeared thoroughly entertained. Johns agreed that performing in this environment for his dedicated fans was want he values most.

Randy Jackson on ‘America’s Best Dance Crew,’ Ellen DeGeneres, and his rampant use of ‘for me, for you’

On the flip side of that, how about people who say that you rely too much on phrases like ‘ for me, for you’ or ‘aiight’ or ‘pitchy’ ? Does it bother you when people say that? And will you try to shake it up with regard to those critiques in season 9?
That’s just a sound bite they edit together. And you get stuck on the words ‘dawg’ and you get stuck on those things sometimes. But what it really is, if you really listen to what I say and not listen to the sound bite [compilation] that happens at the end of the season, when we’re at the finale and they’re making fun of us, that’s where that comes from by the way. You can string together any reporter saying ‘What, what, what, what, what’ a thousand times and it sounds funny. And it’s hard being the first one to speak, I’ve got to tell you. Cowell the $100M man

Simon Cowell is about to become the highest-paid star on TV.

The “American Idol” judge who fans love to hate has signed a deal worth more than $100 million a year to bring “X Factor” — his “Idol”-like show in Britain — to the United States, the Daily Mirror newspaper in London reported.

Cowell will produce, but not appear on, his American version of the show.

The deal will also extend his contract with “Idol” — which had been due to expire — another two years. In total, Cowell will reportedly make $103 million by next fall, according to the British newspaper.

Oprah remains TV’s top earner, but her estimated $200 million income includes her entire empire.

Love the part of the Slezak interview with Randy Jackson where he asks him about “for me, for you.” Randy is so delusional he thinks that fans only notice he’s a broken record because of the end-of-season montages the producers put together.

Um, no, Randy, it’s because you really do say the same three things over and over and over and over again.

  • mgk

The Script released this song previously as like a B-side track in Germany. I found all that stuff out afterward

So Kris didn’t know. That sucks.

The Script released this song previously as like a B-side track in Germany. I found all that stuff out afterward

So Kris didn’t know. That sucks.

Wow, just when I was sort of forgetting that the record labels are evil.

I really don’t think the previous release is going to particularly damage sales or radio play in the U.S., since it was done abroad. But not telling him about it — extremely disrespectful, if you ask me.

  • http://www.twitter.com/halfie6 halfie

Of course, it really wouldn’t have mattered if they did or did not tell him.

Won Idol. Has contract. Must sing what he’s told.

  • BeckyMD

Is it bad that I spot Adam immediately in the pic of Kris’ interview?

  • suebrody

Lord, Randy. I cannot believe ANYONE told him that he was useful on the panel. Because aside from recognizing Adam’s talent (and so did Paula), what did he do this year? Oh, I know…NOTHING. He’s toast after his contract expires.

  • snuffles

I guess Jive didn’t tell Kris. Kris probably found out from the Idol blogs. It doesn’t look like Jive cared to prep Kris for the issue in the media because they assumed the fans wouldn’t find out.

You’d think 19 would learn to stop underestimating the fans by now.

  • suebrody

Is it bad that I spot Adam immediately in the pic of Kris’ interview?

No, it’s not bad, it’s surprising. There were NO other pics they could have used?!

I hope Kris’s single does really well. I guess we’ll know after the radio station adds (is that tomorrow?). I still Heartless on mix in Boston, but no LLWD yet.

  • brie200

I realize I might get jumped on for this, but what is the big freaking deal that Adam’s release is available for pre-order and out selling those other albums. I get it, but shouldn’t the test be whether or not the album stays there for more than a day or two? If the pre-order was just made available in the last few days then it stands to reason that all those people who received emails saying it was now available to order would then rush to do so. I mean, even Jason Castro had the same effect when Amazon emails went out saying his album was now available to pre-order. It might not have gone to #1, but I didn’t hear the collective Idol world freaking out when he was sitting pretty in the Amazon bestsellers with many of the above artists. But it’s like as soon as it’s Adam all of a sudden nobody in the history of the world has ever been a bigger star. Too much hype. Just let Adam’s music speak for itself. I’m not anti-Adam, but the over the type hype is ridiculous.

  • suebrody

According to Brian Mansfied (posted on Idol Chatter blog):

“American Idol” winner Kris Allen’s debut single, “Live Like We’re Dying” picks up enough Top 40 and Hot AC spinsto enter the American Idol airplay chart at #51. Allen’s versions of “No Boundaries” and “Heartless” are also on the Idol airplay chart.

    By Dan MacMedan, USA TODAY
Kris Allen’s Live Like We’re Dying makes the highest debut on this week’s American Idol airplay chart. According to MediaBase, Allen’s debut single picked up 180 spins, enough to put it at #51 on our chart. He enters the Mediabase Hot AC chart at #63 and the Top 40 chart at #93.

    Woot, Kris!

ETA: Brie, it’s a big deal for Adam’s album because it’s being pre-ordered ALL OVER THE WORLD and there hasn’t been any promotion for it yet–no single or leak, no press, no picture, no cover photo.

  • Valentin432

Too much hype. Just let Adam’s music speak for itself.

You have way too much comon sense for the idol world.

  • glamatheart

I hope Kris’s single does really well. I guess we’ll know after the radio station adds (is that tomorrow?).

I’m very confident that Kris’ single will do well. LLWD is a really good, catchy song so once it gets some more airplay, it should take off.

I do remember not liking Cook’s LO when it first came out and being really worried since it seemed like it never got any airplay. In time, of course, everything turned out fine. IMO, Kris is in a better position because LLWD is a better song.

  • Renina

    1. I see Randy is as delusional as ever. He gives “valuablew critiques”? PLEASE

    2. That adam lambert article would be ridiculous if I didn’t know the writer. She’s an adam fanatic so I expect this sort of crap from her. I am also one who is tired of the over-hype. It’s gotten to a point where I can’t even hear the name ‘adam lambert’ without wanting to scream.

    3. will there be a post on Danny Gokey? he gave a concert/show last night and I saw the videos and it was pretty good.

ETA: Brie, it’s a big deal for Adam’s album because it’s being pre-ordered ALL OVER THE WORLD and there hasn’t been any promotion for it yet’“no single or leak, no press, no picture, no cover photo.

But there has been quite a bit of press for Adam before this quiet period. Brie is absolutely correct, in my view, that the real meausure is longevity, not how fast it spikes up the chart.

Look, it’s good news that it spiked quickly, there’s no denying that. But it’s not enough to make any definitive conclusions about anything.

  • will

Of course, it really wouldn’t have mattered if they did or did not tell him.

Won Idol. Has contract. Must sing what he’s told.

But if he had been told, he probably wouldn’t have sung it EXACTLY like The Script singer, and would have made more of an effort to “make it his own.” It sounds like he was under the impression the original track would never see the light of day.

And why does he keep saying it was only released in Germany? That’s far from the truth.

  • brie200

Okay, I get the all over the world bit re: Adam. But my gut still says that shouldn’t the hype wait until it’s been more than a few days? Like I said, I expect the hardcore fans both here and worldwide to scramble to pre-order the first few days it’s available. Then what? Of course it didn’t need promotion those first few days when so many people were already signed up with Amazon to be alerted the second the thing went to pre-order. These were the people who were going to buy the album no matter what, not casual fans IMO.

  • http://www.planetfierce.proboards.com rowenaaine

If the pre-order was just made available in the last few days then it stands to reason that all those people who received emails saying it was now available to order would then rush to do so.

Hi brie200. I think part of the excitement is no emails went out. When people signed up for the email notification, it was on the page for the Hi-Fi recordings pre-Idol album. Obviously a mix-up on Amazon’s part, but no emails went out yesterday. It was solely word of mouth, and reached #28 on the Japanese Amazon top 100 chart in addition to #2 on the US chart.

  • suebrody

But there has been quite a bit of press for Adam before this quiet period

IMO, press is not enough. RCA needs to get going on the “adamstorm.” JMHO. Maybe it’s just that I’m chomping at the bit.

I’m really interested to see how Kris’ single does. I don’t think he has gotten enough press from Jive so far. Oh, I don’t know. I’ll just sit back and wait.

  • washpd

ETA: Brie, it’s a big deal for Adam’s album because it’s being pre-ordered ALL OVER THE WORLD and there hasn’t been any promotion for it yet’“no single or leak, no press, no picture, no cover photo.

Is this a joke? There has been plenty of press. He was on the fricking cover of Rolling Stone. The album has been highlighted in more than one major media compilation of highly anticipated fall albums. He got a huge platform on a reality show that gets about 25 million viewers every week. He has done countless interviews during the tour where he talks about the album. No press? No promotion? I don’t think so.

Also, while these numbers for Adam are certainly a good early indicator, it is important to remember that Amazon represents a fraction of all music sales, and being whatever number on the chart there for a day or two (which is all we have at this point) really does not mean much.

Good to see that LLWD charted, even with the somewhat slow burn release Jive has going for it. I’m interested to see what happens this week.

If the pre-order was just made available in the last few days then it stands to reason that all those people who received emails saying it was now available to order would then rush to do so.

I think the reason most people are perhaps overly excited is that Amazon did not send out e-mails in the US as far as I have understood. Plus it has been available for less than 24 hours starting on a Sunday.

True, the music should be allowed to speak for itself but I think it just caught a lot of people off guard, hence the flailing.

ETA: I also think (well, I suppose I could say know) that a lot of Adam fans are desperate for some actual news (aka new music, single leak, whatever) and are grasping for anything at the moment. I’m sure most of us know that one day of Amazon preorders isn’t that big a deal and that time will tell whether it will sell well. But it is fun to go with the flow and the flailing – it ain’t that deep ;) .

  • BeckyMD

If the pre-order was just made available in the last few days then it stands to reason that all those people who received emails saying it was now available to order would then rush to do so.

Based from yesterday’s thread, lots of people knew about the pre-sale here in MJ’s blog and haven’t got any email from amazon about it.

  • kt_cle

Actually, I don’t get the whole ‘pre-order’ thing at all. First time I ever did it was when I bought Kris’s iTunes pass – and that was because of the other content that came with it. In general, when I want new music, I’ll buy it and download it when it’s released. If I want the physical CD instead of just a download, I guess I can see the temptation of pre-ordering if it gets you the CD a few days earlier than everybody else. But in this day and age of different retail outlets getting different versions of CD’s with different bonus tracks, I’m a bit leary of throwing my money down before I know which version of the CD I want to buy.

In Kris’s case, I will wait and see what version I get from the iTunes pass, compare it to other versions out there, and may consider buying a 2nd (physical copy) depending on how bonus tracks play out. But it would completely defeat the purpose for me to do it now “sight unseen”.

Am I missing something about this whole thing?

  • brie200

I stand corrected on the emails then, but even still Adam fans found out the album was available and acted accordingly. It’s great that it went to #1 and all, but I guess I just don’t see it as the amazing feat that others do. But I’ll leave it alone just by saying that I think the expectations for Adam’s album are a bit overinflated. Yes, I think he will do well. But he’s not one of the biggest musical stars this world has ever seen…not yet. Maybe he’ll get there, but right now he’s still an ex-Idol trying to make it like every other ex-Idol.

  • http://www.twitter.com/halfie6 halfie

But if he had been told, he probably wouldn’t have sung it EXACTLY like The Script singer, and would have made more of an effort to ‘make it his own.’ It sounds like he was under the impression the original track would never see the light of day.

I really doubt that. It may be true that he would have sought to change it up more, but he has nearly no influence over such decisions. If the suits want Kris’ voice over The Scprit’s music, that’s what they are going to get.

  • JJ123

Brie, it’s a big deal for Adam’s album because it’s being pre-ordered ALL OVER THE WORLD and there hasn’t been any promotion for it yet’“no single or leak, no press, no picture, no cover photo.

I’m pretty sure the same thing has happened alot with idol releases. I remember Daughtry and Taylor Hick’s CDs doing extremely well on amazon preorders….and yes even better than a Beatles release that came out the same day as Daughtry’s and a couple weeks before Taylor’s ( I followed very closely that year). It really isn’t that big of a deal at all…and there was all so no cover art or CD titles yet back then either. I didn’t follow too close last year but I imagine that Cook’s and Archuletta’s CDs also had huge rankings in preorders. No need to nitpick exact standings I’m just saying that preorders and chart rankings aren’t much to get excited about yet….it’s all in sustained sales that makes or breaks the success of any CD. I mean Daughtry’s latest knocked out Michael Jackson from #1 in sales for the first time after his death so a bunch of headlines made reference to them being more popular, with a question mark of course…..but yeah I love me some Daughtry but I’m not delusional enough to think they’re more popular than Michael Jackson haha.

And why does he keep saying it was only released in Germany? That’s far from the truth.

He never actually said “only” in Germany. It may have been the only place that came immediately to mind. I don’t get the impression that he is being dishonest…more just that he really doesn’t know much about it and is trying (unsuccessfully) to not say the wrong thing. It’s entirely probable that Kris wouldn’t have known which songs he was given to look over were or were not released previously (esp if he never heard before). It was NOT really fair of them not to make make it known to him. Of course, maybe they didn’t think it would become a big deal.

Oh well, something for future Idols to think about (and do their own asking….lots of bases to cover).

Hmmm… I guess we’re reading different articles because the thing I like the most about Lyndsey Parker is that even though she loves her some Adam she is (and has always been) very respectful to Kris.

Conversely, American Idol winner Kris Allen’s first single, a catchy cover of the Script’s B-side track “Live Like We’re Dying,” has already premiered to largely positive reactions–but his own debut album, which comes out November 17, is still surprisingly only at #132 on the Amazon chart. While it’s safe to assume that Kris’s album will enjoy a stellar first sales week in November, and will probably even enter the Billboard chart at #1, it doesn’t seem to have the same pre-release buzz as Adam’s right now.

  • BeckyMD

Thanks for the info about Hick, Daughtry and Davids. There ain’t many ‘real’ promotion on Adam and his music, so Amazon’s pre-order is problly the only outlet for our flailing :D

After the Adam buzz, Kris is on #2 at shaker and mover list and its general position moved up too. I’m not saying the former caused the latter. But I couldn’t come up other reason for Kris’ album raising in this period. His album can be pre-ordered since Aug 23rd but didn’t make to as high as in Adam’s case. But of course, this comparison is only a fact and not an indicator for anything.

  • ggdoorsfan

i agree with brie – both your comments… longetivity and staying power will be key, after the base has done their part in leading the initial charge to pre order… for example, david a’s xmas album was released to amazon usa, as well as worldwide – back in august, in much the same fashion – no cd cover, no announcement, no snippets or single released, and within hours it was at number 10… it’s fluctuated in and out of the top 100 in the overall bestsellers list since, but it’s remained very competitive on the holiday chart, and tops the opera/vocal charts there…

no way to really know what the actual pre order numbers are…the pre orders from domestic sites will be factored into the first week’s sales for soundscan, and amazon’s percentage of cd sales ranges anywhere from 8-10 percent for the us market, much smaller than itunes and big boxes like wal mart who sell much higher percentages of cd’s… every sale counts though, but i’m looking at amazon more and more as an indicator of popularity, not a be and end all how one might expect to see the cd received and sell in the bigger vendors and on itunes…

good luck though to adam, and all the ex idols releasing in the upcoming weeks… it’s real world time now, and all these folks deserve our best support out in the mainstream music marketplace.

Not only did Danny do an 11 song set for over an hour but he told the audience that he would be in the studio Tues and Wed recording 5 singles and that his producer for his upcoming album is the same as Carrie Underwood’s. That is huge news if Danny is working with Mark Bright. He is the producer of all three of Carrie’s albums and several of Rascal Flatts earlier albums. Looks like Danny will be cross-over country/pop. Have not seen any videos yet but the tweeters from the concert were quite impressed. He stayed after the concert to meet fans.

That’s great for Danny. Looks like he will be the biggest success out of S8 (j/k – too soon to tell) – but still, not a bad start.

    Adam’s album hit #2 within 7 hours.
Kris’s album is #123 now. It’s available on amazon since 25sep and the highest number of it doesn’t even break #110…..

  • fanaround

I think this is exciting news for Adam, even if it’s marginal overall. We live outside the US, and people here were really talking about it, some because they are mad that they don’t have a US Itunes store acct and can’t order Kris’ single, and so they worry they won’t be able to get Adam’s album right away, or Kris’ (which is also selling well on Amazon). They are having it shipped via Amazon.

On Kris and not being told about the Script release, he sounded sort of angry – the other quotes sounded happy though which made me happy. I don’t know enough about the industry to know if he had a right to expect to be told that, but it was on Youtube for crying out loud! I guess it’s some kind of warning in a way to watch out…They should at least help him get a smooth answer to the question going if this was sprung on him like he says!

  • colette

Kris is getting NO HELP from his record company on his single or his CD. Or none that I’ve seen.

Jeez. Is it a conspiracy? Do they want him to fail so they can pimp Adam more, who clearly doesn’t need much help?

    I’m very disappointed….

I would never want to predict who will be the biggest success from Season 8. Odds on favorite is Adam, followed by Kris; however, I do think Danny and Allison have a shot as well. If Danny’s music is good, and working with Mark Bright does give optomism to his fans, I think he could do quite well. I also wouldn’t count out Allison either. I wish them all success. I do have to admit the most buzz is definately Adam.

I’m sure Kris will get the promotion he needs. For some odd reason the single was released Friday instead of Tuesday as originally reported. However, they probably planned a promotional push for him from Tuesday and couldn’t move it up. If no kind of promotion happens by tomorrow then I might be willing to join you. However, for now, I believe that the promotion will come.

Kris and Adam aren’t on the same labels, so Adam’s promotional budget will not benefit from Kris being buried (if any season 8 contestant would benefit it would be Allison, since she and Kris are both with Jive).

Jive has arranged Kris on two of the biggest radio stations to promote his single. He has done several interviews (MTV, EW, popeater and other radio interviews) after the single debut. I won’t call that NO HELP.

Adam is not getting promo from RCA on his single or album. Although his album was listed at some must-have picks. Those are free promo not sth arranged by RCA. We don’t even know the name of his first single yet. Hopefully they can finalize it today (as rumor says) and we can hear some scoop.

This is my first year following AI on the internet, although I watched all the other seasons on TV.

Does this happen every year: “(Insert record company name) is screwing (insert favorite Idol name) because they won’t (promote them / give them good songs / avoid releasing their album at the same time as (insert five other huge established artists names))”?

    It is very, very amusing.

    Yes :)

  • Studio57

I’m pretty sure the same thing has happened alot with idol releases. I remember Daughtry and Taylor Hick’s CDs doing extremely well on amazon preorders

I am positive someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think itunes was in existence in Taylor/Daughtry’s season, was it? If it was it was probably the first year.

And you can’t even compare to last year because as someone pointed out to me earlier, the Davids’ pre-order hit Amazon the week after the finale, not three months later when most of the fan base dwindles down.

Having said that, I also know that Amazon is pretty small potatoes, but it might be a good indicator of how Itunes will be. I pre-ordered the CD on Amazon for my friend because she doesn’t have an Amazon account or an Ipod and wanted me to get it for her. I will be getting mine off Itunes.

Kris is getting NO HELP from his record company on his single or his CD. Or none that I’ve seen.

    You probably haven’t been around.
He’s getting LOTS of help from his record company. Z100 debut, he went on KIIS (the largest CHR stations), he was on OHP (which means spins in many different radio stations), he was on Billy Bush (another syndicated radio show)… In terms of radio I don’t think it’s possible to do much more than that. Jive is doing their thing. Radio airplay is more important now than first week sales, imo.

To me, that suggests that now that Kris’ single has dropped, more people are interested in his album.

Kris’ album started doing better when Adam’s album was made available for pre-order on Amazon. I think that’s more the reason than the single.

  • mgk

Kris is getting NO HELP from his record company on his single or his CD. Or none that I’ve seen.

I do think it was wrong of them not to tell Kris that the song was a cover, but it’s still a good song for Kris. IMO, they should have made sure it was taken off of YouTube, and this wouldn’t have happened. Pretty much no one had ever heard of it, so his team probably didn’t think media people would ask him about it. I think the YouTube thing was an oversight. It should have nothing to do with Adam. They’re on different labels. (Thank God!)

I still think the song will be a hit. Just wait until it picks up more spins and a banner is added to iTunes. It’ll take off.

Kris’s album is #123 now. It’s available on amazon since 25sep and the highest number of it doesn’t even break #110′ ¦..

Kris has the iTunes Pass that’s been available forever, so it’s not surprising that his Amazon ranking is pretty low.

  • Mary102

I am positive someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think itunes was in existence in Taylor/Daughtry’s season, was it? If it was it was probably the first year.

itunes was definitely around during their season – I remember thinking that AI should have jumped on the itunes bandwagon then to have the singles on the show released on itunes (which they didn’t do until S6 or S7 – forget which one).

I agree that, although Amazon is not the “whole market share” – one positive about it is “free” publicity – as in, a lot of people shop around on Amazon, and just seeing an album near the top of the list may have people asking, hmm, who is this Adam Lambert with his TBD album?

  • girlygirl

Does anyone know anything about this (I saw this on ontd_ai.com)…?

“ON ADAMOFFICIAL A POST SAYING A TIME FOR MIRACLES SNIPPET HAS BEEN LEAKED/PLAYED ON THE RADIO:

“My friend said this morning he was listening to 92 Pro FM (In Rhode Island) and the radio host people were talking about Kris Allen, then they started to talk about Adam and they played a clip of TFM…He said it was only about 8-10 seconds of a verse, and they stopped right before it went to the chorus. It sounded like “hard Queen, Aerosmith-ish” and “I don’t know how amazing it will do on mainstream radio though, it was kinda heavy”, and he said something like “I think it will either be HUGE or a big mess”……..”

  • vanjess38

A lot of people bought Kris’ itunes pass and that is the reason why his Amazon ranking is low.
There are others who would rather wait and buy it when it drops but again, looking at where he came from, it’s gone up more than 600% as girlygirly said.

That adam lambert article would be ridiculous if I didn’t know the writer. She’s an adam fanatic so I expect this sort of crap from her. I am also one who is tired of the over-hype.

You feel the same way I did when I read the OTT comments by Slezak and Jim C. concerning Kris’s single. That was over-hype also. I expected that sort of crap from them just like you did from Lyndsey. It’s the AI bubble, Kris and Adam both have their “fangirls”.

last week Kris’ album was number 900-something on the amazon chart ‘” this week it is up to #123. That is a jump of more than 600%!!!

Nah, Kris’ album was like 700ish before Adam’s album went for preorder yesteray. So the jump was soly because lots people ordered Kris’ too when they ordered Adam’s, it has nothing to do with Kris’ single which dropped a week ago and barely had any effect on Amazon ranking last week.

I’m sure they’ll put an ad for Kris’ single on ITune this Tuesday and we’ll see it bounces back on top 100 songs. But what will sustain its ranking is radio spins. Otherwise when the ad’s gone, it will freefall again.

It definitely does look like Mark Bright will be producing Danny’s album and I think that’s great news. I love Danny and am happy for him. I enjoyed the videos from last night’s concert, including “I Can Only imagine”.

The speech before “My Wish” didn’t bother me. It’s Danny’s way of connecting with the audience and the audience was made up of a lot of his fans/a lot of people who were there to see him perform.

The fans seemed to enjoy the speech, and once Danny starts doing some tours, more events he’ll probably keep interacting with the audience like that. It’s not for everyone, but his fans/ a lot of people that will go and see him perform won’t have a problem with it, will understand that’s his way of interacting with people. I could see him still having pretty good turnouts at concerts and events, regardless of whether or not he will normally give a speech during his sets.

Danny looked like he really enjoyed himself, and so did his fans, and I am happy to see that. I definitely am excited and interested to hear his first single, and see what happens when his album comes out.

If Kris didn’t know the song was released before he cut it then he could have thought it was a demo and that could explain his exact duplication of the original.
But I think he needs to be aware that the song was released as a B-side in a lot more places than in Germany. Although The Script’s market has been mainly in Europe and Australia so far, their music – if not LLWD – has been released around the world, raising the awareness of some fans everywhere. As someone pointed out the other day the EP which contains LLWD can be purchased in the States on Amazon.

Lyndsey Parker needs to refresh her rock history. Misquoting John Lennon doesn’t do her credibility much good.

I’m very tempted to send this question to Lyndsey: Now that Adam is bigger than the Beatles, we can expect him to change the course of music history when, exactly? Since his actual album comes out in November, I’m thinking we should pencil that in for sometime round about Christmas. Lyndsey should probably start writing up that column right now. The lead time will give her a chance to do a little quote checking.

I’m very tempted to send this question to Lyndsey: Now that Adam is bigger than the Beatles, we can expect him to change the course of music history when, exactly?

This is why I cringed when I saw that headline. As she admitted herself in the first line of her article, she seized on a momentary ranking position on Amazon to make an OTT hyperbole statement likely to rile up anyone who doesn’t already love Adam.

I get that it was totally a joke, but it was gratuitous and unnecessary. And apparently some people are taking her seriously, which is great for her blog hit numbers, but yet again OTT praise for Adam generates an ugly backlash in her comments.

sorry, but a couple of radio interviews and a rave from EW is not the kind of promo that sells lots of albums. he should be out there performing it on lots of TV shows, there should be pop-up ads about, etc. things so fast now in Pop Culture Land that it’s very hard to catch up if you start running behind.

He’ll be performing on lots of TV shows and do all that stuff… when there’s an album! The album promo will kick in October. Now it’s single promo, which is done on radio stations.

  • Mary102

I get that it was totally a joke, but it was gratuitous and unnecessary. And apparently some people are taking her seriously, which is great for her blog hit numbers, but yet again OTT praise for Adam generates an ugly backlash in her comments.

Oh, I won’t even TOUCH the yahoo comments! First, having to go through 10,000 pages…plus, there are so many hateful comments on that board. Ugh. Just staying away, thank you very much!

And I too am not a huge fan of teh OTT praise, despite the implicit “jokes” about it.

    soverymel:

This is why I cringed when I saw that headline. As she admitted herself in the first line of her article, she seized on a momentary ranking position on Amazon to make an OTT hyperbole statement

I cringed when I saw the headline too, albeit for a different reason. She writes a popular music blog. To use a hugely famous quote from one of the seminal figures in popular music and get it wrong is pretty sloppy.

Honestly, I wish Adam all the best in the world. He’s a charming, funny, brave guy and just because I’m not a fan of his music doesn’t mean I wish him ill. But at this stage of the game silly hyperbole (as opposed to useful, interest-sparking hyperbole *g*) isn’t helping him.

ETA: Chipmunk: DId you read her article past the title?

If it is critical to quote Lennon accurately, then what Parker meant to say is that Lambert’s popularity falls somewhere between Jesus and God. Not quite as pithy a headline, but at least it’s accurate now.

For those who wish to tear down Kris by comparing Kris’s ranking on Amazon pre-orders chart with Adam’s, let me kindly remind you that this is the first opportunity Adam fans have had to order his album. Kris’s fans have been able to order his album through the iTunes season pass since the finale. You cannot possibly compare what their actual total pre-orders are at this point based on the little information you have.

Well I took Lyndsey’s article for what it was….her first sentence alone cancels the OTT hyperbole of the title, because it was all a bit tongue in cheek, to me anyways

I still chuckle at her fangirlsm though.I cant wait for the lolzy snark from her comments though, like HWC’s classic snark on Cantiello and Slezk yesterday. Still lollong from that thread :P

  • Niall

Jive hasn’t done anything wrong or different with Kris. He won’t be on the major talk shows until the week or two prior to his CD release. They aren’t going to blow their wad the first week a single is out on iTunes. If his song isn’t going anywhere six weeks from now then we can assume Jive didn’t buy him a hit like they did for Archie and Jordin, and people will then be free to complain about the lack of illegal activity on Kris Allen’s behalf.

  • Squirrely

Does this happen every year: ‘(Insert record company name) is screwing (insert favorite Idol name) because they won’t (promote them / give them good songs / avoid releasing their album at the same time as (insert five other huge established artists names))’ ?

Every year. Somebody should write a blues song: “Somebody Done Did My Idol Wrong”. Of course, no blues songs would ever get sung on American Idol, but…

These kids are caught between a rock and hard place. Normally, a new artist records a CD on the cheap and is over the moon if it sells 100,000 copies. The Idols have big budgets, obscene money spent on singles, and videos, and radio station promo ($500,000 and up per song), so the only way they can even break even is to sell a million copies. Of course, they don’t know what they are doing so the odds of recording something even remotely creative are next to nothing. So the record label takes the blame.

Taylor fans like to complain that RCA screwed him, but I’m not sure that he didn’t say “hell, no” to singles and music videos. He’s a saavy guy and understands that this is a bottom line business. He may have been smart enough to know that he was never going to be the next Brittney Spears and that the money to foolishly attempt to push anything he would ever record to radio would be wasted. He also knew that every dime RCA spent was ultimately coming out of his pocket. He never did the single. Never did the music video. Never did the radio payola. And, instead of playing radio station concerts for free, put together a legitimate tour that sold well and probably even turned a profit, even with a full band. This top 40 game is high stakes poker and everyone (labels, producers, songwriters, etc.) are gambling with t he artists share of royalties.

    Did someone already post this?

“I am unbelievably moved by the generosity and resolve of my fans, who have donated beyond what I could have ever expected to help students around the country,” said Adam Lambert. “Although I was on tour during the length of the competition, I frequently checked in on the challenge progress and was so amazed to see the number of donors and total amount donated continue to rise and rise.”

While I am very familiar with Lennon’s quote, I only took Lyndsey’s play on words to mean that Adam was beating out all the Beatles’ remasters that are on the top 100 chart. Not that he’s becoming “bigger than Jesus” anytime soon – although I realize by implication that’s what hardcore Beatles’ fans are reading. I thought it was cute, albeit too OTT.

Squirrely, Yom Kippur is a day of atonement and reflection. It is not a day for celebration. ETA: So you wouldn’t say “Happy,” IOW.

Jordin Sparks new single SOS (Let The Music Play ) goes for adds at Pop radio tomorrow and though it is not getting much play or selling that many downloads yet in the US it is doing very well in the UK. it is up to #14 on their itunes chart . Jordin will be going over there in October around the 13th for some promo. she has one thing at least confirmed on that date.

i am looking foward to Jordin’s appearance on Suite Life On Deck October 23rd . it should be good exposure for her as it has really good ratings according to this.

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/05/11/disney-channel-orders-more-the-suite-life-on-deck/18461

A ratings juggernaut since its September 2008 premiere, ‘The Suite Life on Deck’ ranked as TV’s #1 series among Kids 6-11 and the #1 scripted TV series among Tweens 9-14 for all of 2008. Since then, ‘The Suite Life on Deck’ has enjoyed smooth sailing with original episodes holding a commanding lead in the timeslot (Friday 8:00 p.m.), ranking as TV’s #1 program among the key kid demographics, virtually doubling runner up Nickelodeon among Tweens 9-14 (1.7 million vs. 878,000), and defeating it by a whopping 58% among Kids 6-11 (1.9 million vs. 1.2 million). In addition, ‘The Suite Life on Deck’ is #1 in Total Viewers (4.1 million) on all cable, outperforming #2 rank (Fox News and Nickelodeon) by 24%, or an impressive 800,000 viewers. Premiere to date, ‘The Suite Life on Deck’ improved its primary Friday 8:00 p.m. time period, surpassing year-ago averages by 32% in Total Viewers, by 46% in Kids 6-11 (1.9 million vs. 1.3 million) and by 55% in Tweens 9-14 (1.7 million vs. 1.1 million).

Good for him for making an honest apology and for not getting defensive.

I was just gonna post an inquiry here about that, and as usual, commenters at MJ’s came through the the answer already. Dude, I grew up in NY and I knew Yom Kippur is a day of atonement, but I never knew you can’t say Happy Yom Kippur! Makes sense though. I learned something new, and I see DC did as well. Didn’t check the twitter replies to DC– was he really torn apart for that? Yikes. It was an honest mistake. Glad he apologized. I wonder if Andy or Ryan Star said anything to him…?

Avalanche is one of my favorite singles after Permanent, Lie to Me, and My Last Request, so I hoped that would be the next single released. It’s very radio friendly, IMO.

I think it’s a beautiful song and starts great, but it’s one refrain too long for a great radio song. The last third of the song just starts to drag and repeat itself. Also, I’m unconvinced of this rumor.

  • tierbee

In David’s defensive it’s reflex to wish someone a happy holiday. Heck we say happy Memorial Day, Happy Labor Day ‘“ what’s so happy about those holidays’ ¦.

LOL, really – do people even know what those holidays mean? Of course we have HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY and I’m still not sure what we’re happy about ;) . MJ commented in the Adam/Amazon thread earlier that the quotes sounded familiar. I think this article is recycling quotes from right before tour and adding the Donorschoose.org. I think Adam is probably subject to the whims of the record company just like every other contestant. Some choose to play along and fight for small artistic victories along the way, some choose to fight at every junction and risk no promotion for the album from a pissed off record company and some choose not to fight at all.

I would imagine that Adam falls into category 1. The short time frame for the recording of the album requires major cooperation between artist and label and I imagine that Adam knows that.

So, she’s putting together a band – great. I think that is the right direction for her :) . Also nice that she gets a bit of time for fun – all work and no play must be even worse when you’re a teen. It will be very interesting to see what direction she’ll be pushed in by Jive – I will want to check out that single when it comes out.

ETA: and thank you for the Good Friday link but it did make me wonder why we say Long Friday. I always thought it came from German, but apparently not. Ah well, it’s not that important.

I guess “Long Friday” is used in all Nordic languages? At least it is in Swedish and Finnish in addition to Danish. As a child I always thought it was called “Long Friday” because you couldn’t really go anywhere… Everything was closed; so the day literally was looooong :)

Yup, don’t forget the Catholics. More than in theory.

I think David Cook was merely aknowledging Yom Kippur to his friends and fans. I’d give him a break.

Guess so. Well Danish, Swedish and Norwegian are really similar so that’s not surprising – but Finnish too? Huh. I couldn’t help but check it out and Long Friday actually comes from old English “langa frigedà ¦g” (adopted around year 1100-1500, makes sense). So, I guess the English speakers strayed more than we did  .

Sorry MJ if this “appropriate naming of religious holidays”-theme strayed too far from the original Yom Kippur tweet from David Cook.

“Taylor fans like to complain that RCA screwed him, but I’m not sure that he didn’t say ‘hell, no’ to singles and music videos. This top 40 game is high stakes poker and everyone (labels, producers, songwriters, etc.) are gambling with t he artists share of royalties.” HWC

So you’re saying you believe Taylor Hicks pocketed most of $1,000,000.00 contract, instead of using it for promotion, videos and singles? But, he did pay out of pocket for a profitable tour? In essence you’re saying Taylor Hicks was able to do whatever the hell he wanted to do with the contract he won as winner of American Idol. Interesting. I just am a little skeptical that he could wield such power. I certainly don’t know the inner workings of the “biz” or what the contracts entail. I read that Taylor Hicks refused to work on his album while touring. Perhaps, TPTB just washed their hands of Taylor after hitting a brick wall time and time again. A nicer slant on it than the old Taylor/bus notion.

that was brilliant from Sony: Have Kris sings a Script B-side songs (and tell him afterward that it was already released) and ride on Kris momentum as the AI to make The Script better known in the U.S and then release their album in the U.S.

  • girlygirl

I have to say that I downloaded a live EP and the studio album from The Script after hearing about them from the LLWD publicity. And now I can’t stop listening to them. “Breakeven” is a beautiful, angsty song about being one person being anable to move on from a failed relationship, while the other person has already let go and moved on.

This cross-promotion might work in two ways — Kris’ single can bring The Script some more notice in the US, while covering The Script’s song can help Kris gain notice overseas — particularly in the UK and Ireland, where the band are already enormously popular.

Meanwhile, Matt tweeted about having lunch with Daniel James Pringle — and that he is going to be writing with this guy and his wife.

I tried googling him and came up with the fact that Pringle and his wife co-wrote a song for Selena Gomez, but nothing more than that. Anyone have any other info on them?

Yeah, and it sounds like Kris is recording another of their songs. Plus, they’re opening for David Cook starting in November, and doing that gig with Kris in October. Sony is using Idol fanbases to get these guys launched. Kind of interesting strategy. I remember their video of “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” getting Vh1 play, but I didn’t pay much attention to them. Now, their name keeps turning up in Idol-related blogs and articles.

“Well, The Script are rather big in several countries in Europe and around the world. I’m sure this is just the US single release meaning that the song was released internationally ages ago.” —LOB

The Script’s video “man who can’t be moved” was played on VH-1 Top 20 Countdown, but I haven’t found any US chart activity on the song. Their first release in the UK was We Cry. The Man Who Can’t Be Moved was their second release and did very well with a #2 charting. Breakeven was the third single released in Ireland and the UK in November of 2008. “Talk You Down” was released in March 2009.

Breakeven may very well be considered The Script’s first official US release, although, Man Who Can’t Be Moved was a prominent video on VH-1.

Yes, Mtlfan, The Script is benefiting very nicely with Kris releasing LLWD. As long as, Kris benefits from it as well. Right now I have mixed feelings because of the negativity floating around, but the majority of people with any sense at all gets it for what it is — the association when all is said and done will have benefited both.

  • Tess

So you’re saying you believe Taylor Hicks pocketed most of $1,000,000.00 contract, instead of using it for promotion, videos and singles?

The winner of AI does not receive a million bucks to record a record. I’ll never understand where this old wives tale came from. The winner of AI wins a recording contract. The record company agrees to finance upfront money out of the potential profit of the album…but (by law) the recording artist must be paid a percentage (negotiated) of ANY monies earned from the album, not withstanding whether it makes a profit or not. Singers cannot be slave labor to the recording company.

I would surmise that most albums really end up in the red for the recording company. The artist does not have to pay back any monies spent that were not recouped by the sales. Also, personal appearances (less expenses) are usually reserved for the Artist. Sales, and radio spins revert back to the record company.

So, no, Taylor wasn’t being a thrifty old Scotsman. His music just didn’t appeal to a wide genre and the record company didn’t want to waste money promoting songs that had no chance of selling and recouping any monies they would spend on promo and videos, etc. Besides…if a million dollar check was handed to the AI winner my bets is that many of them would just say thanks and head off to greener pastures instead of gambling on their own success.

  • evanjane

That’s funny about the $1,000,000 contract. I, for one, must have read it somewhere. I usually don’t pick random numbers out of the air. At this moment, I can clearly envision Ryan Seacrest saying it …

Exactly. It’s not a negative thing. It’s interesting, though. This is from the Seattle review:

“Yet with little advertising, airplay, or sense of occasion so far from Jive Records — the recording outfit connected with 19 Entertainment,”

Yup. I agree. A release on iTunes on Friday without even a banner
Hopefully they’ll be one there tomorrow (at least as big as the ad that Jason Castro got). Getting Z100 to preview it but not getting any further spins on the station, even getting Kris on OHP this early are all
unusual for Jive. I know Jordin also got off to a slow start she had the benefit of Top 40 play. I’m not sure Kris will get as much of that.

  • tripp_ncwy

“In the meantime, press for one benefits the other as they each get a mention.”

The truth is right now the press is only benefiting The Script. Kris is getting the backlash. If this was a true 50/50 association, the Script would have made some kind of statement. Kris gave them a shout out on Slezak. They should do the same to appease both fan bases.
The association may be good in the short term but in the long term Kris needs to separate himself.

    It is very, very amusing.

OMG yes, it happens every year. Some arguments come up again and again:

    On the voting results:
*It was the producer’s fault. They pimped the other guy/girl.
*It was the judges fault. They are the producer’s puppets. They have no taste.
    *The voting is rigged.
*It was a backlash against the judges pimping/my favorite’s daring personality
*America is just not ready for my favorite’s awesomeness. They are sheep with no taste
*My guy/girl is really the most popular, his/her fans just gt too comfortable
*The other guy/girl has a crazy block of tweens/Country fans/black people/grandmas/cougars/Arkansasians/homophobes power voting for them, that’s the only reason they placed higher than my favorite, the true winner.
*The producers planned the outcome from the start and engineered it that way.

    On the record sales:
*That was a hit because the label used payola
*That was a flop because the label is working with 19 to sabotage my favorite
*That was a flop because the label is stupid and chose the wrong single/strategy/video/radio format/etc
*My favorites album is the greatest in the world (until it flops, then my favorites album sucks because the label made her/him record that awful dreck.)
*My favorite is a success because (points to one bright spot in the era, ignores the rest)

I could go on and on. But you get the idea. All fanbases do it. And they all have their own logic, you can’t talk them out of it. Everybody is convinced they are right and the rest are fools. LOL Even the anti-fan sites have their own twisted logic. We’re all guilty to some degree.

Gotta love idol! What a ride. :)

I’ve changed my perspective a bit. New perspective: maybe they’re waiting to really promote the single when it goes for radio adds on October 13th, and are just releasing it now to get a little buzz beforehand?

For now, Adam and Kris are in the same boat… careers not launched yet. I think both will get their promo push soon, though. It’s just a matter of time.

    Steven Van Zandt

I know that Jason Castro considers him a personal friend and says that when he comes to NY he always sees Steven. I didn’t think David was part of that clique too.

Yeah, the Van Zandts have been to several Cook concerts and they are known to go out for dinner. I didn’t know Castro was friends with them as well. Cool!

Yes, there were tweets/picture a while back of Jason and Steven out for brunch.

I think Steven Van Zandt and his wife have always been idol fans and they get along with some contestants. That’s really nice of them. And just for fun, it was cool to know how the dog story ended.

According to the banter from DC’s show tonight in Bloomsburg, PA (some of the fans can make out the muffled banter better than me..lol) that he is heading to NY tomorrow to start writing for DCTR2.

LOL, there are some super-witty people on this blog….

  • Sassycatz

Yeah, and it sounds like Kris is recording another of their songs. Plus, they’re opening for David Cook starting in November, and doing that gig with Kris in October. Sony is using Idol fanbases to get these guys launched. Kind of interesting strategy. I remember their video of ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ getting Vh1 play, but I didn’t pay much attention to them. Now, their name keeps turning up in Idol-related blogs and articles.

I guess *that* should be flattering to the Idols. They are so popular, they can launch other acts. David Cook’s been helping to “launch” or “relaunch” acts all through his tour. ;-)

I think Steven Van Zandt and his wife have always been idol fans and they get along with some contestants. That’s really nice of them. And just for fun, it was cool to know how the dog story ended.

Maybe I’ve got this wrong, but I thought I heard that during the 7th season when the Cook family was trying to get Adam Cook to one of David’s performance, the van Zandt family was one of those offering help.

that he is heading to NY tomorrow to start writing for DCTR2.

Ooh, why New York? Anyone there he’s collaborating with or just using the obvious resources that are there?

Wow, so according to answers.com, Kelly got a cool million in cash PLUS a recording contract. Not bad Kelly!

Wiki, Answers, etc. are just internet bloggers answering posted questions with the answer they think is right. A million dollars was never mentioned….a recording contract “worth” a million dollars may have been. Idol has never given “direct” money to any contestant. Everything the Idols have “won” has been in direct relation to their sales and touring earnings, outside of expenses.

19 may be pretty dumb at times but they aren’t going to hand a million bucks over to a reality show winner….that would mean the Idol would have “control” and, by george, that ain’t never happened.

  • CathyMK

and ride on Kris momentum as the AI to make The Script better known in the U.S and then release their album in the U.S.

The Script’s video ‘man who can’t be moved’ was played on VH-1 Top 20 Countdown, but I haven’t found any US chart activity on the song.

The Script’s album was released in the US months and months ago, long before Kris was chosen as the Idol.

I posted this a few days ago-

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Can%27t_Be_Moved

The Wiki page for The Man Who Can’t Be Moved shows that it reached #15 on the Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks, which is the same as HAC. It reached #88 on the Hot 100. I remember seeing TMWCBM on the Mediabase charts over the summer myself, so the Wiki entry is correct. Not bad for a debut single from a debut artist. Breakeven is a fantastic song, but it’s not the 1st single in any way. Besides radio play, The Script have been on numerous late night shows, daytime shows like The View, and opened for Paul McCartney in the US. They’re doing just fine without Kris’ coattails. Sure, it’s to their benefit to be associated with writing songs for another successful performer, but that benefit is going both ways, as it will when they tour with David Cook. They’re not a floundering band being forced onto the Idols by any means.

    ETA:

    Hrrrm. Very catchy. I *guess* that’s good…

ETA: I am not saying catchy is *bad*. I am just thinking when Kris comes to mind, I think:

    soulful
    introspective
    intense
    passionate

I guess I don’t think of The Fray or One Republic as *catchy.* I guess you could call Jason Mraz *catchy* and Gavin DeGraw’s 2nd album (with the single “I’m in Love With A Girl”). But when I think catchy, I think Colbie Caillait or Sara Bareilles, not Kris. JMHO. I just wouldn’t have picked this as the first single. I still hope it does well, of course. I haven’t heard it yet; Heartless is still playing.

  • vanjess38

Who even takes comments under those articles serious? The same trolls at work trying very hard to make it look like Kris stole someone else’s song. Haha, a lot of people are still living on a didderent planet. Who cares if The Sript vocalist and Kris sound the same?
I personally listened to it long before Kris’ single dropped. But I listened to the first 10 seconds and listened to Kris’ and there was so much difference. The Scripts was a bit raw and flat for me. Kris did a good job with the phrashing and has a sweet tone to his voice. That’s what he meant by making it his own I guess. He doesn’t need to change arrangements to do that.
Don’t so many artists sound similar?

” They’re not a floundering band being forced onto the Idols by any means.” –CathyMK

To be honest, The Script was a new band to me only vaguely aware of who they were as I listened to VH-1 Top 20 countdown. I was watching for David Cook’s video. I liked Man Who Can’t Be Moved, but it didn’t really “move” me to buy the CD. A month ago I was itching to find new music and decided to take a chance on The Script. I’m glad I did. The CD was a pleasant surprise.

They are an up and coming band in the U.S. and I hope they do well, but it is telling that they will be the opening band for David Cook and not the other way around. I guess David Cook is no longer a neophyte in the music industry.

Internationally, The Script is well-known with many musical accolades under their belt.

I’ve metioned on another article that The Script and David Cook, as well as, Kris Allen are a “family”, falling under the 19R/RCA/Jive umbrella. I expect we’ll see more of these connections in the future. Case in point: The Script and Kris Allen will be performing at the Bosom Ball. I think The Script is a very cool band, so I’m happy for the association.

Truthfully, if I wasn’t involved in AI, I wouldn’t have known that LLWD was a song from The Script. I wouldn’t even care one way or the other. If by chance, I heard the song on the radio, I would decide if I like it or not and from there make the decision to get the CD or not get it. All very simple, all very normal. Most people will connect with Kris’s song this way, not through A.I. boards.

Oh, and good review by the Seattle Times. I like that they’re taking Jive to task. I still believe Jive knows what it’s doing. Three days sales on I-tunes will probably keep LLWD from charting really high, but if Jive was worried about that, they wouldn’t have picked a Friday for release with no visible promotion on the I-tune’s site. If there’s nothing there tomorrow, then I’m at a loss as to what they’re up to.

Critics seem to like the single. That, at least, makes me happy.

    RE: Seattle Times review

The writer of that review blogged during the AI season. She was a huge Kris stan and said many’ ¦ummmm’ ¦not so nice things about Adam. Her take on the single is not surprising to me. I am surprised that she went so far as to diss Jive for not promoting Kris properly.

Kris has had the SOP for single releases that are considered a ‘soft opening’. The Friday release connotes a ‘soft opening’ and many big recording artist are going in this direction. (see: Miley and Greenday) If Jive doesn’t have banners and such for tomorrow on iTunes, then I will start to worry.

Why does it surprise you that “a huge Kris stan” would diss Jive? Isn’t that just predictable preemptive damage control in the event the single charts poorly? And I’m not saying the complaints about Jive are completely unwarranted, just that it doesn’t surprise me in the least that a Kris fan would write that.

  • oceana

One thing, that article comparing Adam’s debut to the Beatles, sorry it just sounds OTT. Also, being #2 or whatever on Amazon at this point is not very meaningful. Clay Aiken was #1 or something on Amazon when his debut cd went on pre-sale, if he wasn’t #1 he was definitely way up there, I remember how excited his fans were. First, Amazon doesn’t mean much in overall sales, very small percentage of sales, second, those numbers are changable from day to day.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Adam’s going to sell a helluva lot of cds, but I just caution against getting overly excited about Amazon, and that article is really out in left field. But it does make me laugh how people constantly want to compare new singers to the Beatles and want them to break their records. Pretty amazing how strong they were and still are. Long live the Beatles, lol.

Kris can’t do the promotion of his single at the moment; he’s in the total rush for finishing the album by October 15th. I’m expecting Jive and him to go for it after that date.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but that P. Diddy show, Starmaker or whatever, is on MTV now, and Kim Caldwell is one of the hosts. I watched it tonight and enjoyed the show. Kim was not on camera very much and didn’t reappear after the beginning that I recall. Anyway, I thought the show would be hiphop and rap, but it wasn’t at all. “I didn’t realize Jordan and Archuletta were considered urban.”

Jive is also big on teen acts. Jordin and Archie are considered teens. Jordin actually has urban appeal. And of course urban and teen is their ideal combo. So far Jive’s treatment of kris has been kind of sloppy and done on the cheap.

There better be a banner or ad on iTunes for Kris tomorrow. Or I’ll have worse to say about Jive.

  • Q3

oceana: A lot of people were skeptical of Kris signing with Jive because they usually handle more urban and r&b music, and that’s not what everyone hopes Kris will do.

Actually, Jive has a lot of pop and pop/rock artists, too. (Britney Spears, Pink, Ciara, Justin Timberlake, for example). Although JIve has a reputation of being very cheap, I was optimistic for Kris when he signed with Jive because:

    1. Jive has a good record transitioning young artists from Idol to recording artist. The handled both Jordin and Archie pretty well. And, although Kris is older than Jordin and Archie, Kris has less professional experience. So being with a label know for developing artists and support them seemed like a good fit to me.

    2. Jive is great at marketing pop music, particularly to younger audiences — which is the biggest music buying market.

I guess we will know soon enough if there is a great, or even good, Kris song that they passed over to release LLWD, or if that was the best thing they had. Maybe someday we will learn the whole story, but for now I am very disappointed with Jive/19R management of Kris.

What professional experiences did Jordin and Archie have before AI? Kris produced an album, had his own band and performed in clubs for several years. I didn’t follow Jordin and Archie but I think Kris was experienced.

  • suebrody

We know the names of three of Kris’s songs and one has already been released as his first single.

We know the name of one of Adam’s singles and the one from the 2012 and we have heard exactly nothing. Very disappointing. And surprising to me (I guess I just expected more w/ the pre-orders on amazon/barnes and noble/best buy). I was SURE there would be some leakage tonight or better yet the date of the first single’s release. In fact, we don’t even know if TFM will be included in the 2012 roadblock, tho I can’t imagine how it wouldn’t be.

Also of interest is the following:

–how well Kris’s single will do
–what the other songs are, and why LLWD was chosen

I may be wrong, but aside from some *radio* promotion for Kris on Friday, there has been nothing, nada from Jive. Is this typical? And I honestly did not expect a single like LLWD to be the 1st released. NOT BECAUSE IT IS A COVER, but b/c it just does NOT sound like a Kris song (Heartless, Falling Slowly, etc.). I know I’ve said it before, but it just DOES NOT TO ME.

Oh and LOL on Jon Stewart.

Now about The Script opening for David…I’m probably ass talking here but some of the opening acts he’s used he chose himself or seeked out. Given the huge Paul McCartney fan he is would it be possible he knew of them and suggested them? And maybe Sony isn’t involved? Not that I think they wouldn’t love two of their artists being linked together on tour..I do remember hearing something about how they were supposed to do even more dates with him but it turned out to be a scheduling conflict. IIRC they’re only doing a handful of shows.

Itunes doesn’t go *poof* and completely changeover at midnight. It usually takes until the middle of the day on Tuesday for the weekly changes to be complete. Frustrating for those of us waiting to download music or see ads, but it does take humans to set up the changes, and that takes time. OTOH, sometimes songs or albums are available a little early, if they’re the first things that the iTunes guys get to.

At Itunes UK I’ve downloaded my music at exactly midnight on release day. Latest album I did that with was Mika, before that it was Muse, the reason I knew they were available was the banners announcing them. Maybe in the US the delay is to do with the multiple time zones.

  • BCU79

It seems like they have updated the store – but not the ads yet. Madonna’s new Greatest Hits collection and the new Miranda Lambert CD are both available for purchase. I’m sure other new releases are as well – but those were the only ones I checked.

Radio question for anyone who might know – what exactly does it mean when a radio station adds a song? I know it means they have added it to their playlist. But, does that guarantee a certain number of spins.

Four HAC, two Top 40 and 1 Christian AC have added LLWD to their playlist. But it appears that only about one quarter of Top 40 stations have reported their ads for the week so far.

I thought we were SURE that Allison was gonna release before Black Friday….uh oh… are they going to throw Allison under the bus? And srsly what is up with Adam? Not a peep from him or his camp. I was sure we’d have news today, an announcement, something! He needs to get releasin’ with his single before MJ’s This Is It strikes.

  • Niall

I thought we were SURE that Allison was gonna release before Black Friday’ ¦.uh oh’ ¦ are they going to throw Allison under the bus? (dramatic wording, but I am surprised at how little we’re hearing about Allison in comparison to Kris.

Jive will probably focus on Kris first then focus on Allison’s cd for the end of the year or early 2010. They’ll do the same thing for Allison that they’ve done for Archie and Jordin, and will probably do for Kris: they’ll payola their way to a first hit single and then hope they can catch on without it for the next few singles. It worked with Jordin, not as well for Archie. Allison finished 4th so she’s going to be treated more as a “new artist” than an AI contestant. That can be good but also has a downside, like the possibility there won’t be a cd until after the holidays.

Looks like Daniel Bedingfield (brother of Natasha) will be working with David on his 3rd album. He tweeted this…

Writing for/with @DavidArchie with @kinagrannis in november – they are two of the coolest and most talented people i’ve ever worked with.

I don’t see why they can’t focus on both at the same time…

Oh well. As you say, being treated as a new artist does have its benefits. Allison’s career is something to be viewed focusing on the long term, and so on… still waiting for a single though. And one from Adam. *still impatient*

  • BeckyMD

llwd is available on itune Canada and Sweden now. uh…I thought it was worldwide releasing at the start. Is it available in other countries? Does itune have seperate chart for each country? Does it have integrated charts like North Anerica top 100 or Euro top 30?

  • CindyM

I agree, she’s not the typical Idol contestant and I think it will benefit her to be treated this way than as an Idol byproduct. Releasing on December 1st isn’t so bad, still in the holiday season. I’ve seen it on the boards that she has one of the best reps at Jive working with her, so good signs all around.

  • tripp_ncwy

Kris now has an icon on the front page of iTunes for his single but it is the same old cover art he had before. Don’t they have a decent picture of the guy they can use. He has had several photo shoots already. Good Grief!!!

  • jtoms

hmm..i see he’s under the singles tab, but he doesn’t have a banner on my itunes. i see glee, desperate housewives, and family guy though lol

Thanks Animated for the Top 10 iTunes link! It’s really interesting to see what is popular in different countries.

It seems that songs can be classified differently depending on the country. For example, I noticed that the only (?) country listing BEP’s I Gotta Feeling as a pop song is Canada. However, BEP seems to top the list in many countries when you choose the general option showing the top 10 songs

llwd is available on itune Canada and Sweden now.

It’s available in Denmark too, where it is actually cheaper than NoBo – wtf?

ETA: I guess the whole shift into digital music has internationalized the music market. I mean, I just checked iTunes DK and you can get lots of Idol music even though I’ve never heard any mention on radio/tv/magazines about the vast majority of them. I actually didn’t know you could get their music here. (Without going to an actual store and looking through their entire collection I will still presume that finding the actual CDs in physical form will be next to impossible.) Interesting.

I thought we were SURE that Allison was gonna release before Black Friday’ ¦.uh oh’ ¦ are they going to throw Allison under the bus? (dramatic wording, but I am surprised at how little we’re hearing about Allison in comparison to Kris.

Kris is the winner, people expect a single soon and lots of promotion. Allison is probably seen as a completely new artist and. They WANTED her and they were going to sign her regardless of where she placed in the competition, so I’m not worried about them throwing her under the bus. I think of it more as them focusing on getting a good product out and not rushing through things with her (not that they’re rushing through Kris). Amazon has her debut album dropping in December 1st so while she will miss out on Black Friday, she’ll still make the Holiday season. All she needs is a good first single and she’ll be fine.

I don’t know why people say we don’t know much about her album, we know quite a bit as a matter of fact. We just don’t have a date for the single but we do know a lot about who she’s been working with.

  • Squirrely

True and also Black Friday does not carry the weight it used to, most people lately are the week before Christmas shoppers. I’m really not concerned financially about any of them, my concerns are purely selfish, I’m tired of waiting for new music.

  • saga

I am excited for Allison and I think I read here that she is auditioning for a band which I think is great. I think they are doing the right thing in giving her a little bit more time. Didn’t she try to finish school as well as recording and touring this summer? If so they couldn’t really rush as much as Adam and Kris. Also she is very young.

Oh, I understand. I’m not concenred but I am anxious for some new music already.

Didn’t she try to finish school as well as recording and touring this summer?

She’s still doing school work at the moment, independent studies. According to her best friend, just last night she was doing homework so yeah, she’s got that school thing going on at the same time as the album.

    From Allentown Morning Call

Kris Allen’s new single is for sale before the end of the month, hitting iTunes tomorrow

So, there is at least on reporter who didn’t realise that llwd was released on Friday. I have a hunch sales will pick up now :) .

He obviously likes the song for Kris and feels it “expands his repertoire” because of the rap part. And he even addresses the cover issue in a good way (IMO), saying that yes it is a cover and yes it is performed in the same way as the original but that it is OK because:

But The Script’s version didn’t even make its album; it was released as a single in April 2008 and hit No. 15 on the U.K. singles chart. It didn’t chart in the United States.

There’s an obvious precedent for Allen’s move: The Jonas Brothers’s first hit, ‘Year 3000′ was a straight-up cover of British pop band Busted’s song, but became the lead single for the album that made the group a smash.

I thought it was a rather good way to handle the situation without omitting anything and giving it a positive spin. Of course MMV.

  • boredinschool

But I would love to here Adam as sing the Kol Nidre (the most important song in the Yom Kippur service) at my temple one year. Or even better Avinu Malkeinu, the most beautiful song for Yom Kippur:

Oooh yes that would be beautiful.

Oh yey Allison! December 1st eh? Illl have to mark that on my calendar

  • Mary102

Well, Jive only has so much money, so has to choose how to spend it on each of their artists. I agree, as the winner, Kris deserves the primo release dates, first single, etc.

And I also agree that, because they didn’t have to sign Allison, but obviously really really wanted to, that Jive has a lot of love and respect for her, and that they will do right by her. December will still be strong for the holidays sales.

    yeah!!!! finally!!!

llwd banner is up on ‘what’s hot’. it moved from #58 to #48 this morning.

  • Studio57

I noticed that just now BeckyMD- this is GREAT news for Kris. He is getting people to buy his song because they are hearing it and liking it now, not because of the AI fans.

  • jpfan

Wow, a little pic under what’s hot that doesn’t even have his image on it. I guess Jive went all out. Probably spent the whole $50 of their promo budget. Jason Castro had a big ad that his label sprung for. And I def remember seeing a big ad when Crush debuted. I don’t get it.

  • isisdagmar

    MJ:

I was wondering, there’s been some comparison between Kris and Adam and how they’re doing in pre-orders. Adam’s pre-orders are definitely a really cool potential sign of the interest in him, but how much do Kris’s pre-orders mean given that I would think that a lot of the really dedicated fans, who are now ordering Adam’s album, would probably have ordered Kris’s album a while ago with that itunes pass thing? Or are the numbers not really comparable somehow?

  • BeckyMD

Adam’s album in Amazon has a picture now, although a vampire one, better than nothing I think.

  • marysue

    isisdagmar -
That’s just what I did…ordered Kris’ album on the iTunes pass way back at the beginning of the summer, and ordered Adam’s album as soon as it became available on Amazon.ca.. I’ve never seen any pre-order numbers for Kris’ album, just for Adam’s, so I think we can’t pay too much attention to numbers of both albums right now. I think they’ll both be great and I can hardly wait till November!

And – yea! – finally got to buy Kris’ LLWD single this morning…it sounds way better – much clearer and crisper – than the youtube vesion I’ve been listening to (in desperation!) for the past few days!

  • BeckyMD

llwd banner is up on ‘what’s hot’. it moved from #58 to #48 this morning.

In less than 40 min, it climb to #44. Keep it going Kris.

  • Mary102

Adam’s album in Amazon has a picture now, although a vampire one, better than nothing I think.

PICTURE!!! Me likey :-) Yeah smoke and vampire look (hoping to rope in the Twilight crowd, j/k – or not…)

Not too fond of that pic, actually – his eyes look too dark. Same look they went for with the NoBo single art.

ETA: Just realized that I was completely self-contradictory in this comment. Clearly I need coffee this morning.

  • vanjess38

People definately love the song. If you check Kris’ @replies since friday, you would see it and after releasing it to itunes in other countries it’s a marvelling response.
The song grows on you the more you listen to it. And I bet Scipt fans who didn’t get the opportunity to buy it as a single will love to buy it too.
I feel it’s a strategy Jive is using to promote Kris out in Europe and that’s the reason why they wrote another song for him and working with those producers in London.

  • Mary102

And apparently Adam, Kris, and SuBo are frequently purchased together, according to Amazon. Hmmm. Interesting.

Acutally, has ANYONE seen any of Kris’ new photoshoot stuff yet?

Adam’s Sebring photos went up for general use pretty quick (even though most of us didn’t know initially why they were there), and were circulating in less than a week. You would think that Kris would have SOME new photos by now!! (I’ll even take new plaid, as long as it look different from the I’ve-seen-it-so-many-times-its-more-familiar-than-my-shirts plaid)
