Idol Headlines for 09/15/09

The Grin reaper

While all the other judges on the “Idol” lineup have welcomed DeGeneres aboard as Paula Abdul’s replacement, Cowell has remained mysteriously — and uncharacteristically — mum, sparking fans and “Idol” followers alike to wonder: Why so silent, Simon?

Is it solidarity for his frenemy, Abdul? Fear of having to match wits with the quick-thinking DeGeneres? Or maybe even lingering shock?

When asked whether the usually outspoken Cowell had any plans to speak about the situation, his spokesperson Lisa Dallos said, “Not at the moment.”

‘American Idols’ Live hits the ‘Cuse

The gang from American Idol 8 was at the War Memorial in Syracuse Monday night for the second-to-last show of their two-plus month tour and it was clear from the jump that this year, there were some significant changes in the production. Gone was the tin foil set of yesteryear, replaced by a rather plain Jane stage with a center riser from which several of the performers rose playing pianos.

Idols share a thought or three before War Memorial show in Syracuse

Allison Iraheta rode into the lobby of the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse on the back of Michael Sarver.

Five Idols had been summoned for what’s become a daily event in every city visited by the “American Idol Live!” tour.

This afternoon’s Press Hour talkers were Sarver, Iraheta, Scott MacIntyre, Anoop Desai and Adam Lambert. They rotated between a handful of reporters, granting each a couple of one-on-one interview time.

One-on-one with the Idols

The contestants from ‘American Idol 8’ are in town and before Monday’s show, the local media was invited to a press hour for interviews. We each had five minutes to spend with the five Idols chosen to participate – Scott MacIntyre, Michael Sarver, Allison Iraheta, Anoop Desai, and Adam Lambert.

Although five minutes really isn’t all that much time, I was able to get some interesting observations. Here’s how it went down:

Katy Perry: Andy Makes Her Cream, Idol Makes Her…Mean?

Meanwhile, Perry said she’d love to do more guest judging on American Idol. She recently joined Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for a round of Los Angeles auditions.

She said she had to break at least one person’s dream for musical stardom. “I was like, I just don’t really think this is your gig, ” Perry said. “I said, ‘Maybe you should start singing in front of other people and see what they think. They might think the same thing.’ ”

As for Ellen DeGeneres joining the show, Perry opined, “I think she’s talented and creative…You need some balance, and Ellen will bring that. Maybe she won’t be the most musical opinion, but she’s a genuine person.”

It’s 4:30 p.m. and Taylor Hicks, Clay Aiken, John Mayer, Nickelback and ICP Still Suck

In the world of rock writing, there are just some artists’ fans that you can’t help but fuck with. While you’re alternately enamored and disgusted by their chosen obsession, they exert a near religious fanaticism for their fixation of worship, making them all too open for mockery. In the past decade, the increasing omnipresence of the Internet and the advent of American Idol have created a new sub-species of rabid followers who take each barb thrown in the direction of their idol as a personal affront, and release a cluster bomb of hatred back, the likes which is usually reserved for publicly condemned rapists, racists and ex-boyfriends.

Aftermath: Taylor Hicks’ Supper-Club Soul Patrol at Warehouse Live

Monday night’s Taylor Hicks show left Aftermath with way more questions than answers, mostly of the existential variety rather than the musical. Our minds were blown, and not in the same “Oh man, I finally got to listen to Zaireeka the other night” kind of way that the Soul Patrol may have been hoping for.

Yes, our minds were blown. But in the kind of way when your brain gets catalyzed after you open one dresser drawer too many and find that your beloved grandparents are each filthy leather slaves, or that your dad modeled for an obscure lady mag in the early ’80s.

Laying odds on ‘Dancing’: Who will win?

Handicapping a season of “Dancing With The Stars” gets harder as every rule grows an exception. Football guys get close to the end ‘” except Lawrence Taylor. Pretty, inoffensive young women get knocked out early ‘” except Brooke Burke. People without name recognition have no real chance ‘” except Gilles Marini.

There are few reliable rules anymore, so all you can do is look at who has natural advantages and disadvantages. After that, it’s anyone’s guess how it will play out.

In this extra-large season with its 16-member cast, let’s look first at the advantages.

BBC to produce UK version of So You Think You Can Dance

British public broadcaster the BBC is set to produce a local version of hit US dance series So You Think You Can Dance.

The move is surprising as its rare that the broadcaster will acquire the format rights to a long running US series.

The series was originally created by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller and Pop Idol judge Nigel Lythgoe and was produced by Fuller’s 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions for the Fox network.
