Randy Travis Talks Carrie Underwood, Alan Jackson, Ray Price and 25 Years In Country Music

You’ve had a lot of success working with Carrie Underwood. ‘Is It Still Over?’ is your second duet together. If we rewind a little bit, we all know you did the Grammy Award winning ‘I Told You So’ together on ‘American Idol’. How did your friendship with Carrie begin?
I know when I saw her first. [It] was playing a show with her out in California. She called and asked if she could record ‘I Told You So.’ I thought that was funny because you know, everyone listening to us may not, but if a song is written, copywritten, and published, anyone can record it. You and I can go find any song that’s copywritten, published, put it down and ask nobody. That’s just the way that works. So, the fact that she made it a point to call and ask, I was shocked by that and my comment was, “Oh yeah, you can do that! I got several hundred other songs in a publishing company over there and you can have anything in that you want.”

Adam Levine Interview: Maroon 5 Frontman Talks New NBC Show, ‘The Voice’ & Tea

Recently, in a cover story for Out Magazine, the winning “Voice” coach Levine ripped the reigning champ of reality television, “American Idol,” calling them out for their alleged policy on gay contestants.

“I’m not a fan of singing competitions,” admits Levine. “I never have been. But there was something that rang true with ‘The Voice.’ It’s just a very sincere, honest show where we were allowed to speak our minds and be ourselves and help people along–in a real way. No one is being teased; no one is being mocked. It’s all about positive reinforcement. We’re dealing with a bunch of people who are all really talented to begin with.”

And when it comes to those rumors regarding the cast’s off-screen relationships, Levine assures fans that there’s absolutely no drama between him and co-star Christina Aguilera.

love to see Adam with kids, and the kids seems very talented =)

What on earth is Randy Travis talking about? Anybody can record a song that is published without asking? Does he mean cover it in concert or record it for sale? Because if anyone can record a song that’s been copyrighted and published then why are lawyers making money clearing rights on songs?

AWW!! I feel same way,Adam is busy finishing up his album, Adam withdrawal is very hard to deal with, anything Adam at this point is much needed relief for sure.

Well, this is Miranda’s second label move. I guess she got the shift since RCA doesn’t have really a “flagship” artist.

Megan’s Kickstarter campaign closed today. Looks like she got just under $19,000 — well over her $15K goal.

that TAXI listing is likely months old — by that I mean it was likely first posted months ago and is still on their listings because the original 9/2 deadline hasn’t passed. For example, I went back and looked at the ROW FAX posting MJ posted a week or so ago about call for submissions for Casey James — and what I found out is that listing first popped up on Row Fax’s tip sheet back on Oct. 6, 2010! 10 months later, it is still listed. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they are still looking for sumlissions — just that the tip sheet hasn’t removed the listing. TAXI still has listings for Kelly and Scotty — and their albums are done. Adam and Kris are likely past the point of accepting any more submissions as well.

Personally, I think it would be helped to songwriters who subscribe to these tip sheets if the original listing date was given so they could see how old it is. Might help them from wasting their time submitting to artists who might no longer be looking for material

That “Majors and Minors” show looks decent. Hopefully Adam, Jordin, etc. really do get to do a little mentoring..

Meanwhile, Kris has made his judge’s comments on the videos from the 10 semi-finalists for the KidzBop contest. You can read his comments below each of the 10 videos, here

Why wouldn’t they? Isn’t that the premise of the show? I’m excited to see it on TV, it looks cute and any Adam on my TV is a good thing :)

I’m no expert on copyright law, but the way I understand things work in the music business, the songwriter controls who initially sings a song — the artist must get a license from the songwriter. But once a song has been licensed and recorded, it’s up for grabs. Anyone can record the song after that. The songwriter will still get royalties from the song, but no longer has any artistic control.

    No way to know really.

I think that true mentoring requires getting to know each contestant individually, so that they can determine the kids strengths and weaknesses. I think that that is something that takes more than an hour or two. The real mentors on AI are Debra Byrd, Micheal Orland, and the other voice coaches that they use, and not the celebrities that show up for what’s pretty much a photo op, and a chance for them to plug their own project. The celebs can give the contestants some general advice about the business, and how to holdup under the scrutiny that they will have to deal with, but that’s about it.

  • Elliegrll

Nvm, I just checked, and Randy is right, but the copywright holder still maintains artistic control of the song.

Once the song has been recorded and publicly distributed, however, compulsory licensing kicks in and everyone who wants to cover (record) the song can do so without your specific permission. They are required by law to pay you a statutory royalty rate, however, as well as notify you that they’re going to release it, and send you monthly royalty statements. They are NOT allowed to make any changes to the words or melody or change the “fundamental character of the song” without the copyright owner’s approval. If the song is changed, it is considered a “derivative work.” Record companies rarely use compulsory licensing because they don’t want to have to provide monthly royalty statements. Instead, they go to the copyright owner and get a direct license so they can negotiate the terms more freely.

I was thinking “Majors and Minors” would be something more like how AI does it by having a guest mentor every episode and spends time with the kids. I actually like this concept better. Can you imagine the kids excitement knowing they’ll be seeing a different celebrity every week. I know I would. I think having different artists that represents different genres would be interesting because there probably be an artists one of these kids can easily relate to. These kids are obviously already talented to make the finals so getting advise from artists that are successful in the music biz would be a dream for them.

I’m sure Adam (and the others) will offer some great advice to these kids, and just think how exciting it will be for them to meet all of these stars! Adam is so good with kids. Plus any opportunity to see him on TV is great. The exposure is always a good thing!

Kris has made his judge’s comments on the videos from the 10 semi-finalists for the KidzBop contest.

I’m not familiar with KidzBop. Is this televised or is it just a web show?

  • sagi

Interesting about that Taxi site! I scrolled through and found this, too! According to this:

NEW LISTING — CONTEMPORARY HARD ROCK/METAL SONGS needed by an Independent Label for a young Male Rock artist a la JAMES DURBIN, a finalist in last season’s American Idol. Songs must offer plenty of opportunities for this singer to show off his KILLER VOCAL skills! Hard-driving melodies and powerhouse lyrics are what’s needed. Bring on those big, mighty hooks!! They need a breakout single for this new artist-let’s give it to ‘em! Vocal and instrumental demo presentation must be top-notch! Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Wednesday, September 28, 2011.
    TAXI # S110928ME

Does this mean James has been signed to an independent record label or is that just a generalization and could also mean major label?
