J.Lo’s ‘Idol’ return is not necessarily good news

With Jennifer Lopez back in the fold, “American Idol” will return for its 11th season with the same judging panel it had a year ago. The trio of J.Lo, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson got a lot of credit for giving “Idol” a fresh face and a gentler attitude that kept it a ratings powerhouse despite the loss of Simon Cowell. So that means it’s good news that all three are back, right?

Not necessarily.

Interview: ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ judge Mary Murphy talks about her dance with death

On “So You Think You Can Dance, ” ballroom expert Mary Murphy is known for her ear-splitting shrieks, soaring whooos and generally being the most excited person on the judges’ panel. But after a bout with thyroid cancer, Murphy was decidedly low key when she returned to the show, giving all of us a chance to feel a little sad about the lack of Hot Tamale train action during a season when it seemed the most worthy. During a conversation at the Fox TCA after-party, I asked Murphy how she was doing, how she felt about changes to the structure of the top 20 and what she’d love to do for the finale — but, unfortunately, won’t be able to.

Travis Wall’s Top 10

With the finale of So You Think You Can Dance season eight upon us, I began to think about my all-time favorite routines. And one name continually bubbled up: Travis Wall. Whether he was dancing or choreographing, the season two runner-up ended up with more than half my top spots. That made me curious about which routines Travis considers his favorites.

So TheInsider.com tasked the Emmy nominee with picking his 10 favorite routines, with one restriction: any piece he was involved with couldn’t be in contention. So while we adore Jason & Jeanine’s season five piece and Allison & Robert’s Fix You from season seven, they were off limits!

‘So You Think You Can Dance’: Travis Wall predicts the winner and tells us what’s next

Travis Wall is sad to report that you will not see him in this week’s So You Think You Can Dance two-part finale. The Emmy-nominated choreographer, and season 2 SYTYCD runner-up, tells EW, “I was supposed to do the finale, but I had to cancel because I got the movie.” Indeed, Wall is currently in Miami creating contemporary pieces for Step Up 4, starring season 6 contestant, and season 7 and 8 All Star, Kathryn McCormick. “It’s my first movie to choreograph, ” he says. “I’m really excited.”

But back to SYTYCD: After getting his first shot on the judges’ panel this year, who does he think should take the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer” this season? “This is by far the strongest top four we’ve ever had, ” notes Wall. “I’ve been pulling for Melanie [Moore] from day one. I feel that not only is she the best dancer, but her personality is great.”
