Concert review: American Idols Live tour 2009

I got there in time to catch the second half of Matt Giraud singing “Georgia on My Mind.” Sporting a fedora and sitting at a piano, he tore through a rendition of The Fray’s “You Found Me.” Then, a handful of other Idols joined him on stage to sing a medly of old school numbers like “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” and “Tell Her About It.” I liked how there was no down time between tunes. When one song ended, they just barreled right into the next one.

The Highs and Lows of Being an ‘American Idol’

In the music business, the road to success is typically long and grueling. Not so for Kris Allen, David Cook and Adam Lambert, who have been catapulted to instant fame by their performances in the hit TV show “American Idol.”

It is a coveted stepping stone, and this diverse group of “Idols” is making the most of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As they all grapple with the scrutiny, the rapport that the three have established with their various fan bases who have dialed and texted them into stardom continues to fuel their success.

Kris Allen enjoying reign as latest ‘Idol’ champion

Kris Allen, one of the more low-key “American Idol” winners, is wearing his crown lightly. The 24-year-old Arkansas native still seems a bit surprised by his win over the flamboyant Adam Lambert, whom the judges and many others considered to be a shoo-in for the title.

“I don’t know if (being the winner) is ever going to sink in – it’s not that I can’t quite believe it, it’s that I’m not getting any special attention, which I prefer,” says Allen, who performs 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Boardwalk Hall.

Sales numbers: Daughtry, Jordin Sparks stay hot

Daughtry’s staying strong for a third week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Though the sales of Leave This Town predictably drop, the album remains at #2 on the top sales chart this week, behind Fabolous’ Loso’s Way. The album has sold 432,000 copies in its three weeks out, making it already the 36th best-selling album of 2009.

Jordin Sparks’s Battlefield remains the most-downloaded digital track, but Kelly Clarkson’s new single, Already Gone, makes a huge leap, increasing by 252 percent.

Paula Abdul, Ju’Not Joyner Spotlight Ugly Side of ‘American Idol’

It entertains millions of viewers a week, creates water cooler fodder after every episode and manages to shift the majority of the country to the edge of its proverbial seat the night before each season finale.

But for some of the show’s contestants, judges and staff, the “American Idol” experience is something else entirely, and it’s not always pleasant. At times, they claim, the reality competition can be unfair and manipulative, grueling and deceitful.

Now, they’re ditching “American Idol” and coming clean.

Daughtry gets lost in the dullness of it all

FOXBOROUGH – ‘I’m Chris, we’re Daughtry,” said the lead singer of the band that bears his surname at the end of the main set of Tuesday’s sold-out show at Showcase Live. It was easy to imagine that Bon Jovi and Van Halen had to make similar clarifications early in their careers. The difference was, Chris Daughtry has yet to find his Richie Sambora or David Lee Roth, and that lack of a foil/creative partner kept the focus squarely on the former ‘American Idol” contestant.

Backstage At The ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Finale: Night #1

Throughout this season of So You Think You Can Dance, the judges–particularly the always outspoken Nigel Lythgoe–have griped that while this season’s top 20 may have been the most technically gifted cast yet, no one stood out as a “star,” a la past contestants like Twitch, Hok, Benji, or Lacey. However, judging from how the top four performed on tonight’s final competitive show, such complaints now seem groundless. All four were stars tonight, in their own way.

Too bad the concert reviewer missed most of the first half. It was nice however, that the Sun sent their pop writer. Also nice to know he didn’t have any biases coming in as he didn’t watch the show.

I’m glad he got there in time to give Matt a good review as Matt still needs to get signed. I was surprised he didn’t comment more on Allison. Seemed to like Danny and Kris well enough and of course spent most of his copy on Adam.

The E online story about Drake seems to be scraped together. Adam didn’t really say much and how is he supposed to answer that question? They took a couple of sentences and tried to make a story out of it. If it’s going well great, if it’s not, and he says it’s not, then that leads to more questions. I always hate stories about who people are dating…..It’s always wise to say something positive and move on to the next topic. Good job Adam.

The Baltimore Sun Review was fun.

LA Times Ultimate Interview Part 2 – continues to prove to be the Ultimate Interview. Just great.

The ABC New GMA article about Kris, David and Adam has some real interesting info in it but the attempt to weave the three of them together, and interrelate them is just clumsy. This particurly stuck me as odd:

When it comes to vocals, Lambert has been compared with Cook.

The both have great voices but who ever compared Adam to Cook?

    Here’s a Q&A from the Baltimore paper:

    http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bal-idol-tour-0805,0,2874452.photogallery

It’s always interesting to hear Adam critique himself:

If you could have a do-over on any of your ‘Idol’ performances, which one would it be and why?

Probably ‘One’ by U2. I wasn’t really happy with that performance. I thought it was a little bit pitchy and unfocused. And also, when I go back from a technical standpoint, ‘Black and White’ was a great song choice and I had fun performing it, but vocally it’s kind of messy.

I LOVE the second part of the LA Times article.

I don’t know. We never talked about that, but what was interesting about that was I changed a lyric in [a Change is Gonna Come]. Instead of ‘I’m afraid to die,’ I sang, ‘I don’t see what’s wrong with a little glitter around my eyes,’ because I wanted the song to be about what I was dealing with on ‘The Ten Commandments,’ this weird, ignorant, ‘Why are you wearing nail polish?’ Like this weird discrimination because I was expressing myself and having people feel uncomfortable with that and then everything tying into my sexuality and just being alternative in any way and wanting the song to be about that. It’s interesting that that came full circle with ‘Idol.’ Really weird and the same issues. Maybe more far-reaching this time and less personal.

    A change is gonna come…

  • Q3

*Part Two of Adam’s LA Times interview is also really good. It sucks that Adam seems to have to constantly prove himself.

Perhaps. It sounds like it is a double-edged sword to me. Adam clearly seems to get bored and eschew routine activities. Having to prove something seems to motivate Adam to work harder and keep him from getting bored.

Just a theory, but based on the info about Adam in the LATimes interviews, particurly Part 1 about his childhood and school
Adam is smart, very articulate and has great communication skills but can’t spell and transposes letters (“fianlly”)
he’s an academic underachiever who was bored in school
comments from his former teachers and folks at MET.
I’m starting to think Adam is dyslexic.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he is was dyslexic because it is so common among performing artisits. Many really gifted musicians, artists and designers are dyslexic (Mozart, Beethoven, John Lennon, etc.) because along with the challenges in some “left brain” functions comes some unique talents in “right brain” functions – artistic skill (visual), athletic ability in rhymic activies (dancing, diving etc.), musical ability, people skills, 3-D visual-spatial skills, vivid imagination, intuition, creative/global thinking and high level of curiosity.

The LA Times interview is fantastic, even better than the RS interview. While RS was great, I felt it was heavily edited. It had to be for conciseness. I get the feeling that with the LA interview, every single thing Adam said is being published, hence the need for 4 parts!

Interesting perspective on Ryan and the Judges from MSNBC.com:

Advice for ‘Idol’: Judges, host need to move on
Randy needs to quit trying to be cool; Kara needs to retire her inner fan

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32313619/ns/entertainment-reality_tv/

    A few highlights:

Randy Jackson: Kill the ‘tude, a’ight?
    Quit trying to be cool.

Your annoyances are legion and have been reasonably well-documented over the years. You’re repetitive. You turn to imaginary words like “pitchy” to get your point across, despite being a professional musician who surely knows the proper terminology. You ram inane catchphrases down our throats like Gretchen in “Mean Girls” still trying to make “fetch” happen.

Kara DioGuardi: Retire the fangirl aura
Realize that you’re on television, and downplay the fangirliness.

Maybe that’s a holdover from your extensive experience in the industry, where you could give the same advice to hopeful after hopeful behind closed doors and openly root for people without worrying that anyone would ding you for repetition or bias.

Simon Cowell: Are we boring you?

It’s fine that you’re Seà ±or Crankypants. That’s your thing. But it’s not just the bottom of the barrel that leaves you bored and unimpressed anymore. There have been times recently when your mouth offered praise while your face indicated “planning the quickest route to the airport.”

What’s worse is the way you only seem to perk up whenever you indulge in your frequent gay-panic jabs at Ryan Seacrest. They’re dumb, insulting and not in keeping with the family-friendly aims of the show. So knock it off and either find a way to bring back the spark or think about following Paula gently into that good night.

Since they’re doing more than one song, but only one that’s getting aired, I’m guessing the first song from each will be between 8:30 and 9am, and the 2nd will be after that, but not aired. Just my guess.

Yes, it’s a mini-concert series. Green Day played for 45 minutes but since there are three performers, and they all need to be one stages between 8:30 and 9:00, bet it’s about 30 minutes. I thought that there were goind to be 6 songs, 2 songs each. One song for each on air during GMA and the second available only online.

I am now on board with burning the denim jacket. I voted in the poll last night as not really caring. However, seeing the GMA article with Adam sandwiched between DC and Kris, I have changed my opinion. The jacket is so not cool. DC and Kris look cool and Adam looks like a dork.

I agree it’s a theory, but it isn’t a huge leap. Adam and his parents talked openly about his high energy and difficulty with focus.

I never said he was a bad student, but that he was an underachiever. My son had a 3.8 high school GPA and was an underachiever. And a couple of his high school teachers said he was an underachiever.

There is more than just one misspelled word on Twitter. Adam is a poor speller, even some of his poetry was posted online had typos in it.

Finally, being dyslexic is not a criticism, and it’s really common. Dyslexica is also closely tied to high musical and visual arts talent — it’s not a bad thing.

I agree it’s a theory, but it isn’t a huge leap. Adam and his parents talked openly about his high energy and difficulty with focus.

It’s unfair to jump to conclusions, but my sense with Adam is that, at the very least, he has a great vocabulary, is quite articulate, and knowledgable about a lot of things (use of “big words” etc.) That said, I wouldn’t be surprised, especially with such strongly artistic inclinations from him, if he wasn’t the best student, which is hardly the worst thing ever in the world. And it certainly has little to do with his chosen career path.

I still maintain Simon screwed Adam over with “One” – IDK, but that song did not seem like a good fit for him. Adam and U2 don’t really mesh stylistically. Though Simon has always been known for unusual picks.

A quick off-topic article on Michael Jackson’s unreleased music- if this is true, this may not be good.

I like the vest! I know I’m in the minority but I like it! Maybe not on anyone else on the planet but on Adam it works for me. The vocal comparison between David Cook and Adam is just bizarre. I love them both but they are entirely different vocalists.

Imagine my excitement to see an Idol article in my hometown Press of AC this morning. Then imagine my disappointment when they take the hey-Kris-how-do-a-gay-and-a-Christian-get-along angle and misidentify Ring of Fire as I Walk the Line. Total fail, Press, total fail.

I liked the ABC news intereview with Adam, David Cook and Kris. Looking forward to the GMA concert tomorrow. I do hope Adam and Kris can sing somthing else besides Mad World and Heartless.

I really enjoyed the ABC news article. It had some great quotes from all three guys and was really balanced. David, Kris and Adam all came across very well.

I don’t have much hope of them singing something different on the live show. But there’s always the second song on the website.

  • Matt

I’m assuming David Cook will be performing first tomorrow since he has to be at R&K by 9am.

Scan of the new Skechers ad they were giving out yesterday. I do like this one the best out of the three ads he’s done so far but I was getting dizzy yesterday because it was plastered *everywhere*. Not just in JC Penney but all over the mall too.

LOL, I just can’t get over the cheese of the Skechers *poses* :) BUT it is nice to hear that DC’s face was plastered everywhere!

I’m excited to see Kris, DC and Adam converge on the GMA stage tomorrow.

    Q3:

There is more than just one misspelled word on Twitter. Adam is a poor speller, even some of his poetry was posted online had typos in it.

I don’t think people care as much about grammar and spelling anymore, in the text message age. Conveying the thought has become more important than the style, IMO.

I don’t see why it would be unlikely. I think we’re all people. Just because he doesn’t believe in what I believe in doesn’t make us not alike. We’ve become really good friends – people are people. We’re going to be friends, no matter what.

^^^ How many negatives can a person fit in one sentence? From Kris Allen, the guy who attended college on an academic scholarship. :-)

  • Q3

If you could have a do-over on any of your ‘Idol’ performances, which one would it be and why?

Probably ‘One’ by U2. I wasn’t really happy with that performance. I thought it was a little bit pitchy and unfocused. And also, when I go back from a technical standpoint, ‘Black and White’ was a great song choice and I had fun performing it, but vocally it’s kind of messy.

I still maintain Simon screwed Adam over with ‘One’ – IDK, but that song did not seem like a good fit for him. Adam and U2 don’t really mesh stylistically. Though Simon has always been known for unusual picks.

I agree, with Adam on “One” being pitchy and unfocused. The two live performances on the Top 3, “One” and “Crying” were both not so good.

IMO “One” was not reallly a great song choice for Adam but I think that the arrangement for the live version was the real problem — and cutting it to 1:45. I think the studio version, which has the full version and don’t have that OTT vocal section is much better.

If Simon was going to pick a U2 song for Adam, I would have preferred — “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, “Pride (In the Name of Love)” or “Beautiful Day”. These songs would work in 1:45 and seem to suit Adam’s vocal quality more than “One”.

Simon said he picked “One” because it is his favorite song, but in the past he has said that “Bohemiam Rhaposdy” was his favorite. Too bad he didn’t pick that for Adam.

I still believe that Simon picked “One” because of it’s association with Gay rights and social issues. Proceeds from the single were donated to AIDS research. The message of acceptance was welcomed by members of the gay community, many of whom interpreted it as a son telling a father he is dying of AIDS. It can’t be a coincidence.

Actually David Cook supposedly is pre-taping his Regis & Kelly appearance today. So that’s good, less rushing around for him tomorrow…

I thought I was the only one who found SYTYCD uninteresting this season. I watched it for the first time last year and then followed with SYTYCD Canada. It was fantastic. I fell in love with Joshua and Twitch. Everyone in the top 20 were so good. This year I started watching it and just couldn’t get into it. I taped it and never bothered watching the tapes and if I did watched 10 minutes of it and switched to something else. Hmmmmmm and I am not sure why. I understand they will be doing another series starting in September and I can hardly wait. There is nothing more exciting than watching amazing dancers or amazing singers. I am hooked on SYTYCD and AI

  • Q3

The Michael Jackson story is just bizarre. It is amazing to think that there could be 100 Michael songs that exist only on one hard drive. Including extra Thriller cuts and all those collaborations. I hope they find it and that it doesn’t crash!

  • isitoveryet

I’m with Q3 on this one.

I agree it’s a theory, but it isn’t a huge leap. Adam and his parents talked openly about his high energy and difficulty with focus.

There is more than just one misspelled word on Twitter. Adam is a poor speller, even some of his poetry was posted online had typos in it.

Finally, being dyslexic is not a criticism, and it’s really common. Dyslexica is also closely tied to high musical and visual arts talent ‘” it’s not a bad thing.

THEORY: There isn’t anything wrong with being dyslexic – Q3 is right that when you have a gifted artist, generally their brains are wired a little different. If he was a B- student that has the communications skills, is high energy & gets bored easily.. then yes… he probably has a is an underachiever. These are signs of a person with a higher than average IQ. Not saying he is a genius, but higher than average. Under the right circumstances he could have been one of those kids taking college prep or AP course.

The LA times article is definitely worth a read. Very interesting.

May I ask for a little help from people who follow Idols (those who get recording contracts) closer than I do? I was reading this article:

    http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/entertainment/article_ba52acfa-3a7a-5143-b2f1-0127bfa0ab25.html

Kris is asked this question and the first line of his response took me aback a bit:

Q: What do you have planned for your album?

A: I’m pretty sure we can get out enough stuff so that 100 percent is not from the show. I’ve done a lot of writing sessions – it’s going really well. We’re getting into the swing of things and pumping out some songs. I think the sound will be pop-rock and definitely will have an organic vibe, as well.

I have never purchased (or even looked at) an Idol album release, so I am completely ignorant. I would suspect that the “coronation song” would be included for the winner, but: Do they normally include some material on the first album that was performed on the show? I guess I expected a few covers, but this answer kind of surprised me given all of the collaborators Kris and Adam have been working with.

MJ? Anyone that knows Idol recorded music?

It is impossible to determine any of these people’s intelligence level from what we know about them. People can be very poor students with poor communication skills and be brilliant. Likewise, people can be excellent students with excellent communication skills and be of average intelligence.

Dyslexia affects extrememly bright people and it affects people who are not so bright. Unfortunately those people are not likely to be able to overcome the problem and learn to read.

My brother has dyslexia and didn’t learn to read until he was around 10, but has a 160 IQ. They said his condition was so severe that if he hadn’t had the higher intelligence, he would not have learned to read.

  • AC

Do they normally include some material on the first album that was performed on the show?

They always add the coronation single, but sometimes it might be called a bonus track (mostly so it won’t get reviewed with the whole album). This is probably to say that No Boundaries will not be on there. Also, there were rumors of Heartless being re-released so that’s probably not going to happen? They probably had that as a backup in case they couldn’t get enough songs together by their deadline but it sounds like Kris is doing well enough in the co-songwriting area that they are moving along in good time, so that’s good!

Do they normally include some material on the first album that was performed on the show?

I think some winners and runners-up have included one cover song from the show, but it’s not the norm. (Fantasia had “Always On My Mind” on her debut and David A had “Angels.”) Most likely they’ll record 20 songs and will have enough to cover a CD plus Walmart/Target/iTunes bonus tracks without resorting to covers, or in Kris’s case, resorting to putting No Boundaries on any version of the CD. Kris probably has unreleased pre-Idol material to throw into the mix too.

  • Vada

Kris has been saying all along that he wanted to write or co-write most or all of the songs on his album, but I’ll admit that makes me nervous. Of course he has been working with hit makers, so that should help. Would I feel better if Chief Creative Officer, Clive Davis was on a personal treck to find him a smash hit? No, I wouldn’t. I would still be nervous. I can’t wait for the first single.

I forgot to mention this amongst my giddy rambling last night about the JC Penney appearance but apparently DC’s manager mentioned to someone he was pre-taping Regis & Kelly today.

That GMA crowd is going to be insane tomorrow! Still haven’t figured out what the best time to get to the park is.

I really enjoyed your giddy ramblings yesterday, Trina! Your story is too cute :) . I’d get there at the buttcrack of dawn. I have friends who’ve been to the GMA concerts and people do camp out to get good spots when it’s a big name. Please give a report after the concert!

I don’t think people care as much about grammar and spelling anymore, in the text message age.

Hmm, I’m younger than Adam and my friends and I all care about grammar and spelling. We’ll use short-hand and abbreviations when Twittering/texting, but try to retain basic grammar/spelling rules when possible. It’s kids who are Allison’s age, like my cousins and some of my younger friends, who seem to have completely thrown writing skills out the door. It’s pretty sad. That’s why Archie’s blogs and Twitters are so refreshing– at least his (cute) ramblings include punctuation and complete sentences! Anyway, that’s getting OT, but one cool thing about reading MJ’s is that posters here post so coherently/intelligently, especially for Internet standards. My brain and eyes thank you all :) .

I thought it was hilarious watching him do the pose/cheesy wide grin thing while wearing his pointy boots. At one point I thought he was going to burst out laughing.

I like how self-aware Adam is, because yeah, his One performance kinda sucked and was his worst performance of the season, imho. His B&W had some issues, but wasn’t a total mess and it’s emotional connection made up for it for me. So I concur with you Adam! If only Adam had just sung One on the air the way the studio turned out. Oh well, no cryin’ over spilt milk at this point.

Excited about GMA tomorrow with David, Adam and Kris. I know blah blah blah, MW and Heartless, but new songs for online, huzzah!

Thanks, Becky, Vada, AC, and cheese for your feedback. I’ve watched parts of seasons 1-3 and all of seasons 6-8. I only watch if someone really catches my eye to root for. I’ve only been moved to buy any of the contestants’ music this season (depending on how good the product is). This season, I liked Allison, Kris and Adam (in no particular order).

I am still curious if winner/runner up albums from other seasons included much cover material (from the show or otherwise)? Is there any kind of a ratio of previously performed music to new music (or a trend) on the first releases? I don’t remember enough of what they did on the show to even compare it to the tracks on their debut albums.

I could, perhaps, see Allison having more covers than the two boys. I don’t think covers are necessarily bad for new artists – some familiar music can help sell albums and even be hits as singles.

In a completely unrelated question, why would Matt be in Philadelphia today? Kris and Adam are in NY with the band. I am geographically challenged. lol

  • Q3

I guess I expected a few covers, but this answer kind of surprised me given all of the collaborators Kris and Adam have been working with.

Here’s what the last two winners had on their first albums:

David Cook – 13 to 15 tracks – including 1 American Idol bonus track “Time of My Life”, 1 hidden track, 1 iTunes pre-order bonus track, 1 Japanese/Wal-Mart bonus track.

Jordin – 13 to 16 tracks – including 1 American Idol bonus track “This Is My Now”, 1 digital bonus track, 1 digital/Christian Store bonus track, 1 digital/Wal-Mart bonus track.

And looking at older Idol album it looks like Kris needs about 15 or 16 tracks. He might need to do 25 or more demos to find the right songs for the album. That a lot to accomplish on top of the tour. No wonder he looks so tired!!

  • girlygirl

Matt and the rest of the Idols (aside from Kris and Adam, who we know are in NYC) are in Philly because they are playing Atlantic City on Friday. The TPTB probably don’t want them roaming around the casinos, so are headquartering them in Philly, which is easily the closest big city to AC (about 40 minute drive). I’m assuming they will head down to AC in the morning.

Meanwhile, I haven’t seen anything that suggests Kris is behind with his album. Here’s a snippet from his Newsday interview…

“We are working hard with some artists, some pretty big writers in L.A. and we’re getting in some songs as well. We’ve got some pretty good stuff so far.”

    ————–

And we know he’s been working on his album pretty much every off day he’s had, plus he was working on it before the tour started. He repeaedly has said the plan is to have it out before Thanksgiving, and I haven’t heard or read anything that suggests he won’t be able to meet that deadline.

  • tinawina

He’ll meet the deadline. All the idols follow the same process… they start by writing and listening to songs and they record rough demos of some of them while on tour, occasionally laying down vocal tracks for real at various stops along the way. If the single is chosen and going to be released early they record it while on tour. Aside from that, the bulk of the vocal tracks are laid down in the couple of weeks following the end of the tour in September. The album gets mastered and printed in October, released in November. Rinse, repeat next year.

And yes, most of the time they attempt to record at least 30 or so songs and pick the best 15 or so to make up the main album plus bonus and hidden tracks. That’s why it is so hard for these albums to be anything other than good, as opposed to great.

  • suebrody

I agree, Ladyguard. I couldn’t even remotely care about this season’s SYTYCD until Top 10, which was *not* the case for S2, 3 or 4. I enjoyed this season, but it didn’t have the “wow” factor for me that that the show had in the past. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t blogging it, but I can’t even remember most of the numbers (tho Crash Test Dummies will always be right up there, b/c it was so Wade-like, unlike his cheerleader dreck piece), whereas I can remember at least 75 percent of the dances from S3 and 4 (I only watched S2 after it aired on MTV, I believe). I hope that Brandon or Jeanine win, but I only voted a few times last night for Brandon, whereas I dialed my fingers off last year for Mark. ;-) So I hope I enjoy S6 more. (Maybe I am still in Idol detox, tho. ;-) )

I think Adam’s interview in the LA Times is the best I’ve read. Both parts are so detailed. I learned a lot more about Adam in these than I have in any others, tho Lyndsey Parker’s interviews were always fun and of course Michelle Collins from BEST WEEK EVER totally cracks me up. :) I am rather sad Richard Rushfield went to gawker.com, because I think he will need to be really snarky there for effect and his in-depth reporting will go out the window. Too bad. I listen to Adam’s studio ONE and am sad he couldn’t have done that on the show. It’s one of my three favorite studio tracks of his. I keep hoping he’ll perform it live, but I suspect not. God, I hope we don’t have to hear MW and Kris’s HEARTLESS and Cook’s CBTM. I know that everyone hasn’t heard these, but if you watch morning TV then you HAVE (even if you aren’t and Idol-aholic) and you might think, wait, is this all they’ve got (especially with Adam and Kris)? So songs from the Idols Tour would make sense from them to perform and then they can, you know, PLUG THE TOUR (which is why I assume they’re on there; I suspect Cook *will* do CBTM as his latest single, but that might not be the case).

And I agree re: Kris. It seems like he has a long way to go on his album. OTOH, he has always been a bit quiet (HA, A BIT) about it, whereas Adam…has not. ;)

  • Mary102

I also enjoyed the ABC interview with David, Adam, and Kris.

In his time away, Allen has become very friendly with Lambert. Earlier this year, they roomed together on “American Idol.” While on tour, they’ve become more familiar with each other’s hidden talents. While Allen said he has maintained the “weird talent of blowing bubbles out of my mouth,” he’s also discovered his former rival’s quintessential quirk. “It takes [Lambert] longer to do his tour makeup than the show,” Allen joked.

Oh, dear god – these articles just TRY to give more material to the Kradam fanfic, don’t they ;-)

That process sounds grueling – and exhausting. 30 NEW tracks on demo to pick from? (I don’t know a thing about bonus/hidden tracks either.) What happens if they don’t have 13-15 good ones? Do they then delve into the Idol/cover tracks?

Last I read, Allison hasn’t recorded anything yet. Adam has been more forthcoming (perhaps too much so – his hyperbole/setting expectations concerns me) about his album than Kris has. I have a suspicion that Kris is on track, but he won’t talk much about it. I think he has surprises hidden – that’s his admitted M.O.

I do hope NoBo is a dead issue for him. I hope pulling it from the tour means it won’t be on his album (I don’t think Adam has to include it on his, does he?). I agree with those who say that it was not written for either Kris or Adam. (Given Kara’s reaction during the final 3 elimination, I feel certain it was written for Danny.)

This all sounds so daunting to me – for any of the three with recording contracts and are touring. They have two weeks before October after the tour ends. Do they just record themselves into the ground during that time (they can’t be using demos for the album releases)? Good grief, Gertie…I am tired just thinking about it.

Now I am wondering if Adam, Kris and Allison are letting each other hear their demos or at least the music as they go along – or are they not supposed to do that?

  • Sherena

What happens if they don’t have 13-15 good ones? Do they then delve into the Idol/cover tracks?

No. If there aren’t 13-15 good ones, they’ll just have to have filler (bland, unextraordinary) songs on the album. There won’t be more than one or two cover songs at most. This is where they’re supposed to demonstrate that they’re more than “karaoke.”

Yes, I thought I lived a pretty cool life so far and Adam had be beat by 22! I can’t wait for the next installment.

Here’s the article about the tweet bio that inspired last night’s Twitter trend #fianllyadam

Adam Lambert is on Twitter, spokesperson confirms

Look at the comments. Here’s one:

Why hasn’t he corrected his ‘Bio Fianlly here to shut down the posers’
    ‘Fianlly’ is spelled ‘Finally’

There’s at least one thread on ONTD_AI with a collection of these.

Note: dyslexica is not about being a poor speller – that’s one of many indicators. It is about decoding information differently than most people. Dyslexics more often than not push boundaries and do things their way — sound familiar.

The New York Times is recording that Paula will be replaced, and that Katy Perry will also be a guest judge.

Yes, There Will Be a Fourth ‘Idol’ Judge
    By Edward Wyatt

LOS ANGELES ‘” The search for the next ‘American Idol’ will also include a search for a new fourth ‘Idol’ judge. Peter Rice, the chairman for entertainment at Fox Broadcasting, told a meeting of the Television Critics Association on Thursday that the popular series will seek to replace Paula Abdul this season with a permanent fourth judge rather than return to a panel of three judges, as the show had before Kara DioGuardi joined the panel last season.

For the audition rounds, which begin this weekend, ‘Idol’ will employ various female pop-music stars as guest judges, Mr. Rice said. Among them will be Victoria Beckham (a k a Posh Spice) and the singer Katy Perry, though Mr. Rice said that he did not expect that either of them would have the time or the inclination to join the show permanently.

Mr. Rice said that he hopes to have the permanent replacement selected by January, when the show begins its ninth season on Fox with taped episodes of the auditions and when the top contestants come to Los Angeles for Hollywood Week.

Mr. Rice said he did not expect that negotiations with Ms. Abdul would be re-started; asked several times how he would react if she called and said she had made a mistake by leaving the show, he said he believed the negotiations were concluded.

Asked what he would be looking for with a new judge, he replied, ‘What we need to find is someone who has great chemistry. It’s really a casting job,’ one that is dependent on interaction with the other judges and the contestants.

‘There are multiple right answers and there are multiple wrong answers’ to who the new judge should be, he added. ‘Our job in next four to five months is to really consider what makes this the most fun and the most entertaining.’

Do they just record themselves into the ground during that time?

    Yes. Pretty Much.

Now I am wondering if Adam, Kris and Allison are letting each other hear their demos or at least the music as they go along – or are they not supposed to do that?

I’m pretty sure last year’s guys let each other hear songs while on tour. I remember them talking about it.

This is why people keep saying you are lucky if you get 2 or 3 really good singles and the rest is halfway decent filler. If you are lucky, the album will be in the competent to good range.

Not that its is impossible to pull off something great, it is just really really hard and involves quite a bit of luck. I hope a 3 of them mange it this year. I like Kradison a lot.

Scan of the new Skechers ad they were giving out yesterday. I do like this one the best out of the three ads he’s done so far but I was getting dizzy yesterday because it was plastered *everywhere*. Not just in JC Penney but all over the mall too.

God, I hope he’s getting paid a lot of moolah for this gig. That photo is cheesier than American Idol! And I hope he gets a haircut before his gig tomorrow because the Locktopuss is out of control.

Q3: And, has there been any word on who is producing Kris’ album?

Vada: Are you kidding me? This is Kris we are talking about. LOL If they need a guy to safeguard the code to the nuclear ‘football’, this is your guy.

This guy was in the pic that mj posted a few days ago with Chris D. and Kris in a studio.

    http://www.thegrixer.com/mikeelizondo.html

Yes, I knew he was in the studio with Mike Elizondo and Chris, but I thought was for a writing session. In an interview Kris said:

‘I know it’s tough to do with the Idol albums. It’s so hectic that it’s hard to get one producer for the whole album, but that would be my preference. The albums that I listen to and really appreciate, they all have that one-producer thing. Every song sounds different, but they still have that something about them that sounds the same.’

In a later interview, he said it was down to two producers. Has Kris ever said who is producing his album?

First someone hacked Trends last night (at least it’s an online hacker claim) and then they fry them. Twitter has real issues they need to solve — capacity issues, data issues, phone tweets that don’t arrive, the “know issues” list on the Twitter site is pretty amazing. (Of course that’s when you can get to it.)

“In a later interview, he said it was down to two producers. Has Kris ever said who is producing his album?”

I think Kris just doesn’t want to tell the whole world everything about his album before it comes out. Personally, I love the way he is going about things, trying to give us all a wonderful suprise maybe. I think it’s all good, afterall he’s not obliged to do so and keeping things under the radar has worked for him so far.

  • Vada

In a later interview, he said it was down to two producers. Has Kris ever said who is producing his album?

No, but he is doing an MTV interview today, so there is always hope. Actually, no there isn’t much hope. He just seems determined to keep it all a secret. I don’t really visit any fan specific boards though, so I could be out of the loop.

There might actually be a practical use for that headphone splitter that Kris got – sans the silliness about “cuddling”. I hope that Kradison are sharing their tracks with each other, bouncing ideas back and forth. It worked for them on the show. I was hoping they wouldn’t be “territorial” about what they are recording.

    tinawina wrote:

If there are 2 or 3 really good singles, the competent/good range stuff will grow on me – it always does with an artist that I like – as long as it doesn’t suck. Great would be wonderful, but given the constraints they are working under I really don’t expect it from any of the three.

I am hoping for decent – these three will be the first “new music” albums I have bought in more than a decade. I have a huge music collection (much of it on pristine vinyl), just not much (okay, nothing – lol) that is current. For me to be remotely interested in a new artist is saying something about the artist. To find three at the same time – has never happened in my nearly 50 years of appreciating music.

I think Kradison are (is?) immensely talented – in their own unique ways. I hope their labels/management don’t let them/us down with mediocre material across the board.

I am guessing from the discussion that Kris is still shooting for one producer – or has chosen one and isn’t saying who it is. Adam and Allison haven’t really said who are producing their albums either, but they will probably have more than one producer?

As a DC fan, I was happy with the ABC interview with the three guys, especially some of the DC parts:

Cook, who has had a year to find his footing in the spotlight, said he hasn’t become caught up in trappings of fame. “In one sense, everything has changed. But in truth, it’s all the peripherals. You get recognized more, for sure, but I don’t really feel any different.”

Just ask Lambert, who said, “David is very talented, intelligent and down to earth.”

Beyond embarking on another record and continuing to perform live, Cook takes a live and let live attitude toward his next steps. “The five year plan I’ve implemented involves being happy, making good records and playing good shows,” he said. I figure whatever is supposed to happen will inevitably happen, regardless of what I do.”

Today, Cook’s satisfaction stems from being able to identify himself as a musician. “Any time some sort of application for something comes in front of me, and it asks what my occupation is, I can write in ‘musician,’ and not ‘bartender’ or ‘painter’ or ‘mascot for a restaurant. ‘” The worst part of his new line of work? “The mascot job paid pretty well,” he said jokingly.

Can’t wait for tomorrow’s show … I’m curious to know what David Cook will sing.

I’m pretty sure it will be CBTM for DC tomorrow. No point debuting a new single on TV if there’s no coordinate radio add date, which there isn’t.

Found a new article about the Shechers promo from Ad Age.

Nice to hear the Skechers people are happy with him:

Rick Graham, senior VP-sales, said the company is in discussions to continue its relationship with the singer. “You couldn’t ask for anyone better as a celebrity endorser,” Graham said. “He’s done a lot for our men’s business. Our demo has gotten younger. We’ve always had a young demo, but he brought some hipness to it, some cool to it.”

But in light of the above, this cracked me up:

Yet when Cook and his coterie of handlers arrived — fashionably late — he sported well-worn cowboy boots.
    The Skecher-less Cook
appeared to take the chaos in stride, left-handedly autographing CDs for adoring fans…

I mean, I don’t think DC has ever worn Shechers outside of those print ads. He’s like the worst celebrity endorser ever, haha.

The albums have almost been entirely new material with very few covers.

When I said a couple of weeks I didn’t mean it in a hard and fast kinda way. I should have said a few weeks? Or maybe less than a month? Anyway, the norm is they get a few songs done during the tour – potential lead singles and whatever else they can squeeze in – and the rest gets recorded in a frenzy in the weeks immediately following the tour. Hopefully they’ve had time to learn all the words and play around with it before then. But they have to be done probably about a month or so before the release date (maybe longer) so there is time to master, manufacture and ship CDs. Not much time to think about what’s happening.

If there are 2 or 3 really good singles, the competent/good range stuff will grow on me – it always does with an artist that I like – as long as it doesn’t suck.

Yeah, I think that happens to everybody. :happy_tb: They just need to give us a reason to stick around for the next album. Keep hope alive!

DC’s usually quite good about toeing the company line, which is why I find his staunch refusal to wear Skechers so hilarious. Did you notice the header on the browser? It says, “Skechers Spokesman David Cook in Cowboy Boots”. Too funny. I just hope it doesn’t hurt contract renegotiations, or future sponsorship prospects, cuz I have friends in advertising and lots of industry folks read Ad Age. Oh well, apparently, DC’s not too concerned that not wearing the shoes could lose him the contract, and I kinda love him for it.

The albums have almost been entirely new material with very few covers.

I think that the new idols have to establish their brand. They have to establish their identity with the first album. So doing covers is not something that they should do if they are trying to establish who they are. They sing other people’s songs during Idol and they would be wise not to have their identity tied to closely to only doing covers IMO. That being said the timeline for the new albums is incredibly tight. Last year there were three albums released by the end of the year. David Cook and David Archuleta’s were successful, Kristy Lee Cook’s not so much. We will see what happens.

That interview you mentioned was with Brian Mansfield right before the tour started. There has not been any sort of public announcement. But I would be very surprised if he had not chosen a producer yet.

It also does not appear that Mike Elizondo has any previous connection to Daughtry. Of course it is never safe to assume but I am really hoping that Elizondo was there because he’s Kris’s producer.

He’s worked with a really eclectic group of artists and I think he would be a good fit for Kris.

Well I hope that Kradison are sharing songs and ideas as well. They seemed to do it during the season, so no reason why it wouldn’t continue later on. And it can be good to have the ears of someone else listen to your stuff, especialy if it’s by someone whose taste abilities you trust. So I think Kris and Adam, despite making very different music, would be great resources for each other there.

And yeah also totally agree about the schedule of the AI record and why most of them have been pretty crappy. Which is why Adam should take a queue from Kris here and not let the ensthusiastic puppy part of him out when describing his album, and go with his strategic self. Keep it more like Kris with his ‘I think it’s going well. I hope it is,’ kind of stance. And it’s also why I think some Adam fans need to dial back their expectations. Because it’s highly unlikely that the record will be anything better than just good. In fact it’ll be lucky to be good. And yeah, good for me will be 2-3 good tracks as well, and some others that can grow on me.

I dont’t expect any impact on sales. I would think that most people would expect him to be on the list. Further, most people are not aware that such a list even exists. I guess I should just speak for myself, but I just became aware of this list this year because I was searching for stuff about Adam. I think because of Adam, people are going to become aware of other people on the list that they were not expecting.

Yeah, sometimes his lack of filter can get him into trouble. On the other hand, I like his lack of filter in other things. Eh, sometimes one takes the good with the bad. I don’t find his lack of filter worse than the enjoyment I get from his being pretty honest, so I guess I’m okay with it.

But someone other than me will have to break it to clearone.

I don’t doubt it. But the list and the mag will be highlighted during the press interviews for his album. Reporters will ask him about the issue and his feelings about making such a prestigious LGBT list. And as a result, people who were not aware will become aware.

I can’t decide if that’s a good or bad thing in terms of sales. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Really, anyone who knows who he is at all, knows he’s gay by now – it’s a non-story. I would be surprised if “Out” magazine plays much of a role in any of the press he does for his album. It’s not a mainstream publication.

  • Q3

Funny tweet – how could anyone confuse the two?

saw david cook at nyc in jcpenny sketchers autograph signing & someone called him adam lambert

It actually might help record sales. Out Magazine is the largest circulation Gay Magazine in the US. Subcribers are young, mostly 18 to 34, college educated and affluent. They have a propensity to buy music. 5,000 records here, 10,000 records there, the next you you know you have a hit.

And the list is actually pretty well known, and along with the Awards Show, gets a fair amount of press coverage.

In a later interview, he said it was down to two producers. Has Kris ever said who is producing his album?

That interview you mentioned was with Brian Mansfield right before the tour started. There has not been any sort of public announcement. But I would be very surprised if he had not chosen a producer yet.

It also does not appear that Mike Elizondo has any previous connection to Daughtry. Of course it is never safe to assume but I am really hoping that Elizondo was there because he’s Kris’s producer.

He’s worked with a really eclectic group of artists and I think he would be a good fit for Kris.

Mike Elizondo is listed as first writer on some songs that may be used on Carrie Underwood’s upcoming album.

Adam is smart, very articulate and has great communication skills but can’t spell and transposes letters (‘ fianlly’ ) he’s an academic underachiever who was bored in school comments from his former teachers and folks at MET. I’m starting to think Adam is dyslexic.
That’s a HUGE leap. Adam said in the first part of the interview that he was a B student. That doesn’t remotely qualify as a bad student. I also don’t think you can criticize him based on what he wrote on a Twitter page. That entire universe is misspelled and every single Idol has done it multiple times.

I agree with you. Adam didn’t want to do his homework and didn’t study for test and he still got B? Some students have to do a lot of work to be able to get B, it mean he’s a very smart and intelligent person. (well.. you can tell that from every interview). He just doesn’t like being tied up in school/academic, typical artist that’s more interested in creative works. Well he said he’s creative early on and he also said he has a lot of energy and hyper when he’s young (probably still is now :biggrin_wp:). I think he is a bit of ADD/HDD, couldn’t concentrate on things that don’t interest him. Just like Michael Phelps with swimming, Adam with arts, theater, singing and performing. They’re both smart and intelligent young men that excel in the area they really love.

I’m weighing in a little late on this topic (work got in the way!), but I don’t think Adam is dyslexic. In one of her interviews, his mom mentioned that when Adam was little he liked books and music, and he started reading at a young age. If Adam is dyslexic, this probably would not have been the case, because his mastery of reading would have been somewhat delayed. My nephew is dyslexic, and, even with special classes, it took him longer than other kids to fully master reading.

Adam was probably just an intelligent kid who was bored in school. It sounds like he was more interested in the arts than in “mundane” classes like math and science, and his grades reflected that.

Re: twitter typos, maybe Adam is just a lousy typist!

The LA Times Ultimate Interview, the SDNN profiles and Leila Lambert’s interviews really indicate that Adam was notable in some way when he was a young child and in school.

LindaT, you are right. I do remember Adam’s mother saying he loved all sorts of books at a young age. When he was so energetic, she brought him to the doctor for testing. Even tho Adam says he is hyperactive, his mom said the doctor concluded Adam was just precocious.

I can’t find any reference to Adam reading at an early age, just to him being able to recite from memory and do character voices before he could read. Adam I think this is from the Leila Lambert interview regarding Adam and books:

    May 24, 2009

ml: At what age did you know there was something special or unique about your son? When did you discover his talent?

Leila: I would say as early as 3 years old, when I realized Adam could recite books verbatim and could make character voices even before he could read. He loved Halloween and taking on different characters.

And it doesn’t sound like he was ever tested for ADD/ADHD. Here the North Coast Times Leila Lambert interview Q&A:

Q: Going back to his childhood, Adam said in an interview that when he was growing up in Rancho Penasquitos that he was a ‘hyper kid’ who got into musical theater to channel his energy.

Leila: No, he wasn’t hyperactive, but during a checkup when he was little, I did ask his doctor about Adam’s behavior because he was just nonstop. The doctor said ‘No, he’s not hyper, he’s precocious. He’s just very aware of everything around him.’

I’m just catching up on all the days chatting. And here’s my thoughts for why he isn’t on The View:

It’s been quite some time since the interviewers drove us crazy asking about Adam’s “sexuality” (I hate that term!) and his crush on Kris. My guess is that his management and Idol finally told interviewers they could not ask about either of these two things anymore. If that is remotely the reason why Adam didn’t appear on The View then I am so effing happy. Those harpies drive me crazy just on the commercials for that stupid show. I was really dreading that interview and to a lesser degree the one that was supposed to be with Kathi Griffith on Larry King Live. And here I was feeling like a geek when I went to a friend’s house for dinner the other night (missed the Baltimore concert) because she lived off Lambert St. and her son’s name is Adam. I thought, “Hee!” (Her son is adorable and precocious too!).

My thoughts on Adam’s learning issues (if any) which I doubt: My brother was (passed away) off-the-charts ADHD; Adam is not. I’ve done extensive research and even shot documentaries on the subject.

I knew the second he used that term in Year of Birth week it was an exaggeration. There is no way he is ADHD and I doubt he’s dyslexic (though that’s a more plausible theory). I, for one, think he has other things to do than check for typos (and I’m an editor, so that stuff drives me crazy, but I also know, it happens to the best of us). Yes, his peeps (if they had a brain) could have fixed the mistake in a keystroke. I don’t know what they were thinking. Still don’t.

Even Adam was mildly ADHD as a child, it did not transfer to adulthood (as chemical changes in adolescence take place, these things often stabilize). Adult ADHDs generally have little or no COMMON SENSE. They don’t have that “playback” feature in their brain that prevents them from learning cause-and-effect rationale, meaning they make the same mistakes over and over again. Also, it’s hard-wired in them to push people’s buttons (and NOT in a good way).

I am in media and watch Adam’s interviews with a scrutiny like I’ve never had before (because I adore him, I hang on every word, every gesture). With anyone else, I think, “Okay, get to the point ..” Even people like Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and George Clooney, (who i have MAD respect for and adore), don’t inspire me to examine interviews as I do Adam’s. And he is all but flawless. He is uncanny. I swear, Palin’s people should have brought him in to train her.

He defines savvy. And from the Baltimore interview, he says it’s organic? Man, that boy is unreal.

Susan M, you’re probably long gone. Is the term ADHD even used much anymore? I’m thinking they’ve simply reduced it to ADD. (Or is the other way around? I’m sorry about your brother, BTW.)

I know some about dyslexia. I tutor students with dyslexia and have it myself. I’m extremely careful to try to check spelling, but many times do not catch it. I’ve noticed it even affects my sentence structure. The severity of dyslexia can be great or small. I could imagine Adam having dyslexia with a high verbal IQ. His parents encouraged him in the things he has/had strengths in (from what I can tell) and this is a key to overcoming dyslexia. Not curing, overcoming. I have been finding more and more that people with dyslexia tend to think outside the box. Sound like anyone we know? :)

Many with dyslexia have gone on to be very successful in life (doctors, award winning authors/playwrights, etc.), but the key always seems to be, having an advocate (mostly an adult when you’re young) to come along side and encourage you in spite of your struggles. From what I have read of Adam’s mom, she did this.

Adam was tested when he was younger and the doctor said he was just precocious. He said he did not want to do homework or study but he was still a B student all the while doing theatrical plays all year outside of school and Jazz Club and Drama Club and Chorus in school. I read that Eber said that the only subject he had problems with was Algebra but did well in Geometry.

I don’t think he is dyslexic as by daughter was the same way and we had her tested and retested. The doctor told us and her teacher the same thing as was told to Adam’s parents.

  • Truthiness

I don’t think he is dyslexic as by daughter was the same way and we had her tested and retested. The doctor told us and her teacher the same thing as was told to Adam’s parents.

I agree. We have no evidence of Adam’s being dyslexic and his parents did do tests for him and the only thing he was, was precious. I was an ‘under achiever,’ in school as well with a “B” average, because I scored very well on tests, IQ tests, and was in Talented and Gifted programs, but I was clinically depressed from when I was six and started manifesting an anxiety disorder in my late teens. Eh, it happens and yeah, it did screw with my scholastic career as I got older. My point being, there are lots of reasons one can be precious growing up, and still be an ‘underachieving,’ student that have nothing to do with dyslexia. So spelling or just typos aside, we have no evidence that Adam is dyslexic, and in fact, evidence to the contrary. Sorry for the oversharing, but really, people can not do ‘well enough,’ in school for a variety of reasons besides ADD, ADHD, or dyslexia.

What’s interesting to me is that Adam seems to have dealt with his issues by just finding what he was good at, and just doing it and pursuing that, even if it seems like it sucked. He looked at it as a learning and proving experience and tried to find something positive out of it. As per what I read into that second part of his “ultimate,” interview. I was not that brave at 19, or 20 or 21 or whatever. And shrooms or not, his decision to once again try and make himself happy by getting out of theatre and going on AI, was also brave. I think the next parts of his LA interview will get into his AI experience in a way that seems a little less facile than his RS interview. Good stuff in these interviews. Cool that Kris and Allison will also have some multi-part interviews as well.

D’oh! what a giveaway! Yes, he is precious, but I meant the word precocious. See? Misspellings happen all the time, and no, I’m still not dyslexic, I just can’t edit my post now. Can I blame the giant oogy spider that crawled on my arm right before posting and completely threw me off? Maybe not, but it was really oogy. And giant. And spidery. And I’m still really grossed out.

Can you believe an acoustic Starlight??? Wow! Saving that voice for tonight!

  • saga

Not really sure what I think of starlight acoustic. It will be really interesting to watch the recordings later. It certainly is interesting that Adam changes things up a bit and he sure has a killer voice, no doubt about it. I wish he’d lowered the key for the acoustic version to showcase his lower register. Also, I was sort of waiting for him to use his head voice in the higher register (witch I know he can) but he just didn’t. Maybe a morning thing, I know I can’t sing in the morning, but I still wished he’d go for it.

I missed the live feed — will have to wait til GMA comes on out here in California. How did Adam, Kris and David sound?

Did Adam get bras thrown at him? Did the crowd go nuts for all 3 guys?

    Thanks

Sunn, I just sat here with my mouth open during the first part of Starlight. Just when I think I can’t love that voice any more he throws an acoustic version at us and he was amazing! And people say his voice is not radio friendly! Hah!

ETA Valentin432, they each talked a little. David fared the worse, just a little pitchy.

  • Q3

2 pages of dyslexia and ADD discussion is coming from 1 or 2 misspelled words on twitter?! I misspell words all the time, not just on twitter but here too, because I’m a crap typist, simple as that.

No, the original comment was not based on a twitter typo. It was based on the first two parts of the LA Times Ultimate Interview which contained several factors that were consistant with someone who decodes information differently – the most commonly know form of this is dyslexia. Along with Leila’s and Eber’s comments, the SDNN interviews and Adam’s previous comments.

There are 15 other forms including dyscalcula. People who decode information differently offen struggle in some areas in academics, are very successful in their careers, and often take non-traditional routes — very commonly marketing, politics (John F. Kennedy, Ben Franklin), physics (Einstein, Steven Hawkings), music (John Lenin, Mozart), performing arts, architecture and design. Over 50% of dyslexics have IQ’s over 140; and by definition have at least average intelligence.

Just to be accurate – the infamous typo “fianlly” that was trended on Twitter on Tuesday night was based to a typo in Adam’s 8 word Twitter biography on his home page. It is one of many “Adam spellings” that have been collected by fans more dedicated than me. I had forgotten about it until ONTD_AI trended it on Tuesday.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or AD/HD) and it was not mentioned in the original comment.

I guess this is where the GMA discussion is. Off hand comments: big crowd but kind of sluggish. I was surprised to see alot of kids. Without my Adam blinders on, I’d say there were alot of Cook fans there. And the screams seemed fairly equally divided although I didn’t hear alot.

To be honest if I saw Kris singing on the street, I’d walk by. Harsh but true. Adam and Cook seem on another level. Adam did a nice job on Starlight but he still sounds like Fantasia to my ears.Cook looked good but I really hate the song he did.

I liked the Adam version of Starlight but this guy is not for everyone. I don’t even think he’ll match Cook’s success. And he looked very unrocker standing next to Cook when he did Lies. I truly have no clue as to what kind of career he’ll have. Although kudoes for asking for bras. He know how to pander to the fanbase.

Cook is just a easier sell for radio. Adam is all over the place. Kris bores me but I’m hoping for a surprise. I could see him fading quickly though.

  • cookbunny

I went to the Memphis Idol show and I’m embarrassed to say I don’t really remember “Starlight,” maybe because it wasn’t a familiar song to me, or it just disappeared when compared to the Bowie medley, Mad World, etc. But BOY that acoustic “Starlight” really stands out!

I am kind of thinking he is not for everyone too… His voice in this version of starlight sounds very feminine, almost like anthony and the johnsons. They all had minor pitch problems at some point, and since that is out of the ordinary for all of them, the blame probably goes to the sound engineer.

  • girlygirl

That acoustic version of Starlight is sweet, but that wasn’t a great vocal — probably because it is so early in the morning. It was nice, but not fantastic. They aren’t used to getting up this early and singing! I’d love to hear Adam do this version in concert, though.

  • aa618892

  • CindyM

How was kris’s heartless? Why is no one talking about his performance, he went first right? How was he? And David? Which song?

  • saga

Listening to the rehearsal. He sings in such a weird key for a guy that I don’t really know what to think of it. Almost liked the rehersal better than the performance as I remembered it, sounded more dirty in places, which is good. His high voice is too perfect at times for my taste, almost like a choir boy. Still don’t know what to think though but he sure brings something to the table that no one else does.

  • jpfan

Kris went first with Hearltess and his face was obscured by the microphone. Adam went second with Starlight and David went last with CBTM. I think the order was correct in terms of performance impact.

  • adamland

  • unique28v

I was only referring to this performance. That will have no effect on their albums.

But its the same thing. Whether its a performance, a song, an album, etc. My point is, its impossible to say how billions of people are going to see something. For every 2 million that finds it boring or uninteresting, another 5 million will love it. there isn’t one person in the entire world that every person is going to think is great. Its just not realistic. But the crowd seemed to enjoy all three guys equally, so it seemed like a nice little concert to me.

  • jpfan

Well many fans think Adam will be Madonna and Micheal Jackson combined. So for the Adam fans who thinks he’s a superstar there may be millions who find him not their thing. We’re all just giving our opinions. I think he’s a polarizing artist who may have limited mass appeal. But maybe he and Kris will both surprise me.

This is Starlight is not what is the norm for Adam. And the rehearsal did sound really good.

  • will

So Kris did acoustic “Heartless” and Adam did acoustic “Starlight”? Why couldn’t they both rock out a little? Boring.

  • girlygirl

Can we please find out how Kris and David sounded? They were on the show, too!

I liked the acoustic Starlight — wasn’t blown away by it though. It didn’t have the same emotional power of his acoustic version of say, Tracks of My Tears. But it was still very nice — especially for that early in the morning. That has a lot of potential as a potential album cut.

I really wish Kris had sung something other than Heartless. He doesn’t seem to have much freedom as to what he’s allowed to sing on these talk show appearances. Are they still hoping to put Heartless out as a single? Because that makes no sense to me — how many versions of Heartless do they really think people will buy in less than a year? Already have Kanye’s original and The Fray version. Too many versions of the same song out at more or less the same time does NOT equal commercial success.

  • Vada

unique28v, it is only my opinion. No need to get so defensive. It was just a boring arrangement, IMO.

girlygirl, only about 3, maybe 4 people (j/k) ever heard the Fray version of Heartless. It played on a handful of Alternative stations.

Kanye’s, on the other hand, had massive airplay. Kris’ version almost sounds like a different song, though, because he made the ‘rap’ parts much more melodic.

  • gulfluv

I’m on Central Time, so I just finished watching GMA. Kris sounded his usual great self on Heartless, Adam’s accoustic Starlight was fresh and good, especially for this early in the morning, and David Cook did Come Back to Me and sounded good, but I think singing this early in the morning is prob not his thing either. I enjoyed all 3, and I thought it was funny that when Adam started singing my husband came in the room with his shoes and socks and finished getting ready while watching. He said “He really is an incredible talent” I’m not sure why that made me giggle a little. :)

Now I’m watching Jason Mraz on Today Show, what a great morning for music!

  • BeckyMD

So for every Adam fan who thinks he’s a superstar there may be a billion people who find him not their thing.

So the ratio is 1: one billion. Thanks for the info. Scratch that. Shouldn’t start a Friday morning negatively.

Hope the ratio will increase soon. :laugh_tb:

  • tierbee

I thought Kris’ performance was nice, I enjoy him a lot, just wish he’d lowered the mic a little bit, he looked like he had to stand on his toes sometimes :) . I wasn’t actually crazy over Adam’s performance, I also thought it was nice but I would’ve liked more of his lower register. And I’m pretty tired of Come Back to Me by now (especially seeing it yet again on Regis & Kelly afterwards) but it is surely nice to see David Cook on my TV :) ! I thought all three had nice albeit quiet and not all that exciting performances, and David looked more “seasoned” for a lack of a better word which certainly is to be expected. Was there an Idol tour show last night? I know David had a show.

But the crowd seemed to enjoy all three guys equally, so it seemed like a nice little concert to me.

That’s what I thought, too – a nice crowd that seemed to like everyone and a nice little concert. Nothing super exciting, just a nice show. Bet the weather was nice, too!

  • unique28v

unique28v, it is only my opinion. No need to get so defensive. It was just a boring arrangement, IMO.

I’m not being defensive. I’m just stating my opinion as well. lol I think its too early to make generalizations about how people are going to perceive a performance and/or album. I don’t care if people didn’t like Adam’s performance or not. Heck, I don’t think either of them are making it into the rock and roll hall of fame anytime soon. lol

  • LisaE

I haven’t seen the version on the show (west coast), but I LOVED the rehearsal version of Starlight. I was a little nervous, I’m not going to lie …but sooo good. I was trying to figure out how Adam would belt it out arena-style on a morning show and make it work. This is how he made it work. Awesome.

  • jms

How was kris’s heartless? Why is no one talking about his performance, he went first right? How was he? And David? Which song?

Kris’s Heartless sounded like it normally does for me. Yes, he went first. He didn’t seem to change it up at all so I’m not sure what to say.

Adam sounded a bit rough in places as if he’s still trying to get his voice to wake up for the day. While most of the acoustic version was only okay for me, there were a couple places where he used the opportunity to add in some wonderful intonation that worked really well. I think if he had time to play with it more, it could become one of my favorites by him but as of right now, I’d rather listen to the concert version.

I’m not a David Cook fan and am not familiar with his music and didn’t recognize the song. But he looked real nice. :)

  • jpfan

I edited that because I meant many people. Not one to a billion. Although there are millions who obviously never heard of Adam or Idol. :) I thought the concert was a little low energy for all involved because it was early in the morning.

Ok, how can Kris and Adam both look so freakin’ hot that early in the morning? That’s not fair…

Did you see Adam over to the side enjoying Kris’ performance? That’s cute.

Kris sounded fine…maybe a little rough in spots, but pretty good. Again, I don’t know how they can even sing that early in the morning…I’d be yawning the whole way through the song if I had to do that…

  • saga

I definetely liked the rehearsal better. Adam just sings too perfect for my taste sometimes, he needs to roughen it up a bit! I agree with girlygirl that it didn’t have the same emotional power as Tracks of my Tears but no one should be made to sing this early in the morning. Starlight is a very suggestive song and the singer really has to drive it hard, whereas TOMT is more laid back. I loved that he is taking a chance and doing something new because I guess they have very little rehearsal time for these things compared to other artists.

Am I in the minority here. I really liked the stripped down version of Starlight. I thought it was beautiful. I just turned on GMA here on the west coast so I haven’t seen Kris or Cook yet. I only watched the Starlight link above. I know the Cook fans will say Cook is the best and ditto with Kris. Like I said, I haven’t seen the other two performances yet, but I’m sure they did a good job too. They are all talented, if they weren’t they wouldn’t have done as well on the show as they did.

Well on a funny note.Hope allison was sleeping.Adam told national TV to throw all the underwear garments they want.

Bet somewhere in Canada clearone is saying “Nooooooooooo!” And Allison had better put her tennis shoes on for SR now to play dodge the undies.

Oy – well he may want to eat those words after he’s wading through a pile of underwear.

Yep, a perfect morning treat: FRESH & LIGHT

Not at all. I didn’t mean to sound unenthusiastic. I really liked it. I just think that is wasn’t what it could have been if Adam had more time to put his stamp on it. I’m thinking of what he did with a lot of the Upright Cabaret performances. There were a few places where he added the emotional intensity with intonation but I think with additional time/practice it could have been even better.

So Kris did acoustic ‘Heartless’ and Adam did acoustic ‘Starlight’ ? Why couldn’t they both rock out a little? Boring.

I guess rocking out at 8 AM is not easy, most singers are sleeping or are about to sleep at this hour.

Hard to judge the mass appeal thing but David Cook had the biggest impact IMO, good for him because he is the only one promoting an album right now.

Adam should pay for 2 things.Allison’s tennis shoes and the stage crews nail gun they are going to need now.

Good morning! What time is the concert going to be shown on TV? I am on the westcoast. I need to take my boys to school, just don’t want to miss any one of them.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

That acoustic version of Starlight is sweet, but that wasn’t a great vocal

Really? I have it on my ipod, I’m listening to it as I type, and the vocal is superb. No off pitch notes at all, imo.

I loved the stripped down Starlight, I have been critical of his concert Starlight before, but this version is sublime, again jmho.

    Vada:

C’mon, a LOT of people have heard the Fray’s version of Heartless. It is on the radio out here in L.A. basically every single day. 98.7 FM does this thing at 8 p.m. where they play the 8 most requested songs, and the Fray’s version of heartless has been on that basically every night for weeks now. KROC plays it alot as well. Not to mention they probably perform it in concert.

I’m one of the biggest Kris fans on this board, but saying no one’s heard the Fray’s version is just silly. Kris’ version of the song is different, of course, but IMO it is still too much overkill trying to put out 3 versions of the same song in less than one year and expecting people to buy it.

  • Squirrely

Agreed – he’s really the only *star* at the moment. I’m glad he had the *pimp* spot. Was anyone at his show last night? How was it?

Again, I don’t know how they can even sing that early in the morning’ ¦

Um, did anyone see the vids MJ posted of Kelly Clarkson on GMA? She didn’t seem to have any problems. No excuses!

girlygirl, I was going to just post the same thing. I hear the Fray version on 98.7 it seems like every day. If I were him, I don’t think I would release it as a single. Too many versions out there, although I like Kris’s version.

    8:30 – 9:00 am

Yay for Adam going second on GMA!! We can now avoid 2 pages of “pimping” or “spotlighting” discussion! Yay GMA!!!!

They could have rocked out. Maybe they were saving their voices being that they have a show tonight *shrugs*

When they come back next year with their own music I’m sure they will turn it out.

Anway I really enjoyed the acoustic version of Starlight.

  • ilovekrisallen39

I never heard The Fray’s version until after Kris sang it on Idol. But then again I don’t listen to alot of music. I go online and see what certain people listen to and go from there.I never even heard of The killers until Kris started singing it on tour. Most of the music and get certain Idol’s sing on the show and then I go online and see if I can find the orginal singers version online and if I like it then I’ll buy it throw I-tunes.I thought all three guy’s did great. To get back on topic.LOL

fyi mj now has a gma thread for this

  • Q3

Here’s my take of the performances:

    1. All three sounded pretty good. Nice to see them on HDTV.

    2. Opening song with all three was forgettable.

    3. Individual performances – all three are better than they were this morning – but I though all three were really good and enjoyable:

    - Kris – Heartless – same arrangement he usually sings of it. The beginning was quite nice, it got a bit pitchy toward the end and he was kind of screaming at the end.

    - Adam – Starlight – new acoustic arrangement and very different emotional feeling in the performance. I found the arrangement was really pretty good but a couple transitions didn’t flow perfectly – the transition to the lower register and the transition to the high notes toward the end. I expect he will sing this version again and work out this out. I really loved this version but can see how some people, even Adam fans might prefer the concert version. I liked it better when I replayed it and am very happy to have a new version.

    - David Cook – Come Back to Me – he sounded good, not great, but was boring. I know I am tired of this song, and I think that David might be, too.

No you are not in the minority, I absolutely loved it. I love even more that he gave us a totally different version than what he does on tour. It is like he is giving us a whole new song. I am sorry but this is the mark of a brilliant singer.

  • girlygirl

On the video of Starlight, Adam started singing at 8:39 a.m. Kris had already finished and there were commercials in between. So I’d guess Kris came on around 8:30 a.m.?

And it doesn’t look like there’s a link up on the GMA site for the Fleetwood Mac song that the 3 guys did together

PS – I will say again that I liked the acoustic version of Starlight. Didn’t love it. Would like to see Adam perform this acoustic version in concert though (in a regular concert, not at 8 in the morning!) because it’s a nice change from the way he normally does it, and I think it has the potential to be a kick ass version of this song.

  • girlygirl

PS – is twitter still having problems? I can’t get my tweets to post

aa618892 – I think people who have never heard Adam sing before would be blown away by the vocals. I also don’t pay attention to slight mistakes in live performances and I look at them as a whole and how I feel about them on an emotional level. And on that note, Adam was my favorite because it was a new version for me so the song took me on a new journey. But I do think all three idols sounded great. All three of them should be proud of their performances.

Kris was on about 8:32AM. There was a commercial break between Kris and Adam.

A lot of people have heard The Fray “Heartless”. It hit #25 on the US Alternative Rock chart, #79 on the US Chart. It got and still gets a lot of radio airplay, there are over 450 videos of it on YouTube along and they play it in their concerts. It was released 2/6/09 and has charted two times.

In terms of the Fray and their usual airplay numbers, this is not much. It never got very high on iTunes either, and it isn’t on any of their albums.

Kris’ version is very different (faster and more melodic) than the Fray’s.
