As it heads to St. Paul, ‘Idol’ tour is doing idle business

Jordin Sparks was the definitive winner of this year’s “American Idol” competition, but her group of competitors might be losers overall.
The “American Idols Live” tour that lands at Xcel Energy Center on Saturday appears to be limping into town, despite the high-as-ever ratings for the TV show last spring. Ticketmaster’s website shows good seats still available in the lower level of the St. Paul arena, including floor seats in the first 20 rows. Among the performers will be Sanjaya Malakar….

…..”This has been the weakest seller so far” of all the “Idol” tours, said Ticket King co-owner Brian Oberst. “It comes down to who the Idols are, and this year nobody seems to care about them.”…..

…POP: AMERICAN IDOLS LIVE

Saturday: Let’s be honest, here. History probably won’t be too kind to season six of “American Idol,” and so far anyway, we have yet to see any of the contestants threatening to become the new Chris Daughtry or Carrie Underwood. But then again, it did give us the hair-raising phenomenon known as Sanjaya Malakar! And early reports from the tour suggest we’ll see the teen wonder join Melinda Doolittle for a tear through “Proud Mary” – which should make up for Phil Stacey’s “Blaze of Glory” and “America the Beautiful” (for which he apparently dons a sailor suit)…

Daughtry: ‘Daughtry’
Released on Monday, August 20 2007

Placed fourth in the last series of American Idol, Chris Daughtry hasn’t been idle since he was kicked out of the competition. Turning down offers to join more established bands, instead the singer started up his own, was given bandmates by his record label, and has now got around to releasing his – admittedly lacking in an original name – debut album, titled eponymously.

This is an album chock-full of good old-fashioned rock music, full of power and emotion, Daughtry’s thick, penetrating vocal arching over the grinding guitars as the band swings through each track. If you’re looking for fresh ideas, you ain’t gonna find them in this album, but if you fancy a bit of drama and heavy melody, then you’ve come to the right place.

Daughtry is no Nirvana, the sound never builds up to anything too intense for a newcomer and indie lover to take, but it’s definite headbanger music, designed to appeal to a vast majority of Americans and the Download crowd here in the UK. Chaotic chords abound, zinging up the scale as Daughtry pushes his voice to the max throughout.

This isn’t for everyone, that’s for certain. There’s no new-fangled electronica, nothing but pure drama and streamlined hard rock, and that will do Daughtry just fine.

Tracy has more than just a few Idol hopefuls.

Several singers made the trek to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego on Tuesday for a chance to step into the American Idol limelight.

Jaron Liclican, 16, is one of the lucky few to make it to the second round. He will go on to sing in front of celebrity American Idol judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. The three judges were absent from the San Diego audition, but 23 show producers awarded between 300 and 500 golden tickets to singers selected for the second round….

Hicks on Coast looking for his Soul Patrol

Taylor Hicks, winner of the 5th season of the staggeringly popular TV show, “American Idol,” performs 8 p.m. today at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. A native of Birmingham, Ala., Hicks was signed to Arista Records by the label’s legendary founder, Clive Davis.

Hick’s “American Idol” appearances spawned a legion of fans, known as the “Soul Patrol.” And since the show, he’s released a popular self-titled Arista debut and penned his memoirs, “Heart Full of Soul.”

Hicks, 32, spoke by phone from Vicksburg with the Sun Herald earlier this week. Here are excerpts of that conversation.”Well, I’m in the middle of a summer tour, and also a book tour. So I’m kind of doing both right now.”…

I love how people are much quicker to blame the contestants than the show itself. American Idol has totally saturated the market and it’s just going to get worse. It fell in love with itself and it just caused people to lose interest in what kept them there in the first place: the personalities behind the faces. To say that nobody cares is ridiculous and false; if anyone is to blame for this, it is the show.

Besides, the novelty of the show is totally gone. It was bound to happen sometime. It just happened to this particular group of people.

Daughtry at the California Mid-State Fair

“Do you mind if we get sappy on you?” singer Chris Daughtry asked the 6000- plus fans who showed up last Saturday to hear him perform at Paso Robles Mid-State Fair. The band had already ripped through six rocking tunes before slowing the pace a bit with the love song “What About Now”. One more quiet song followed – Chris sang a fabulous spare version of Soundgarden’s “Fell on Black Days”, accompanied only by an acoustic guitar – and then it was back to straight up rock. And damn good rock at that…

    Daughtry – Over You Reviews

    About.com

    Guide Rating – 4/5 Stars

    The Bottom Line

This is the single that could easily carry the band Daughtry back to the top 5 of the pop singles charts. “Home” was a bit of a downer, but “Over You” is back in the muscular pop-rock mode that made so many American Idol viewers fall in love with Chris Daughtry in the first place.

    Guide Review

…What is truly phenomenal is that with a single like “Over You”, the group can realistically aim for the next million… “Over You” has been a fan favorite since the album Daughtry was released. The catchy singalong chorus makes it a great concert song. Look for this single to take a lengthy ride pop radio playlists well into the Fall of 2007.

The Star Tribune article is a little misleading. I’ve got my tickets for Saturday’s concert, but I’ve been keeping tabs on what tickets have been available through Ticketmaster. In the past few days, additional (very good) tickets have become available. So while sales haven’t been great (for the tour as a whole), it really isn’t as bad as the article makes it out to be.

    Interesting…

Shopping channels tune in to musical acts

Move over, MTV. Here comes QVC.

That’s right music fans. In between the blond women selling jewelry and the dermatologists shilling skin-care products, television retail channels are booking live musical acts — and not off-brands, either. Think LeAnn Rimes, Barry Manilow and the Goo Goo Dolls…

…QVC and HSN reach the 90 million homes that receive basic cable, and the channels are inviting celebrities such as Paula Abdul to talk about products and artists such as the Goo Goo Dolls to broaden their appeal…

…The partnership between the channels and celebrities can work especially well for musical artists, who are struggling to sell CDs to a younger generation that tends to buy individual tracks rather than whole albums…

It doesn’t actually, it says this:

While thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no official word on signings for Jordin or Blake, two Season 6 semifinalists have already signed on the dotted line and are getting ready to record their first CD. Sabrina Sloan and Sundance Head have signed with Universal Motown and will record a CD of duets. They are expected to hit the studio in August, with the goal of releasing the CD in November. This is the first time that anyone who did not make the top 12 (other than William Hung) has signed with a major label. Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s more significant is that they are the first from Season 6 to get deals.

Reading the Jackson, TN article it was exactly as I thought. They utilized the floor space to pack the people in there. When I saw Bucky at the same venue..they have this stage extender thing that comes up out of the floor and is lower than the regular stage. Bucky would jump down alot and dance around on that lower stage as their wasn’t much room on the higher one. They used that lower stage for the West TN Idol contest portion of the show as well. I will say that it was a great venue and that I wouldnt hesitate to go see another artist that I liked play there.

On another note..I cant believe the children in that article are starting back to school this week..my kids don’t go back til Aug 20th.

On another note..I cant believe the children in that article are starting back to school this week

I can’t believe that there were 6 year olds at a Rock concert. What happened to Raffi?

It’s not that I’m accusing Daughtry of doing or singing anything that wouldn’t be appropriate for somebody just out of kindergarten. It’s just that rock concerts are supposed to be pretty loud and kids grow up so fast these days. Lego is going bankrupt because 8 year olds don’t want toys anymore. They want cell phones.

I feel like I’m 100 years old. Back in my day…..LOL (it’s just that I secretly still like assembling Lego and have just now realized that I only have a couple of years more to use my kid as an excuse to buy Lego…People! I need a hug).

Legos will come back when there’s a huge blockbuster movie directed by Michael Bay with legos that come to life and save the earth. Worked for “Transformers” anyway. I had just gotten rid of all the boys’ old Transformers character and the damn movie comes out and there 25 new ones, many of which are sold out everywhere. Sigh.

And yes, I would let my kids see Daughtry in concert but only if he keeps his shirt on.

I didnt see my first concert til I was 14 and it was New Kids On the Block (go ahead…laugh everyone!) LOL I took Cecilia to her first concert at age 11. We went to see Little Big Town.
I have been to lots of concerts..mostly country and AI artists and I must say it amazes me the number of people that have brought toddlers and newborns to concerts. (yes, I said newborns.)

  • squishy

I think Daughtry’s concerts are very tame. No explicit language, no lewd acts, etc. Women hit on Chris at these concerts but he usually makes a joke or just ignores them. Chris prides himself that his music can be enjoyed from very young kids to “kids” who are young at heart well up into their 80′s.

But I do agree that I would be worried about hearing loss at rock concerts in general not just for kids but for adults as well.

  • SpenserJ

I didn’t see my first concert til I was 14 and it was New Kids On the Block (go aheadà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦laugh everyone!)

HA! I laugh at you not, as I also attended a NKOTB concert. Only – I was about a senior in high school, so that’s more pathetic. My excuse? I took my cousins, who were too young to go by themselves and my aunt bribed me to. Go ahead, laugh at me too, all my high school friends at the time did!

My first concert was Def Leppard in 8th grade lol.

And Kirsten, here at the Chez Spense, we have tons of legos and we build stuff all the time. We also have Lincoln Logs. My son is six now, and he does love the video games, but he’s only allowed an hour a day so he still plays with his toys. I just try to mandate the reading, coloring and building time so life is not sucked dry by PS2 and Spongebob. Although I must admit that we just got that Nintendo Wii and that’s hella fun.

I don’t think rock concerts are really appropriate for infants and toddlers. And, I agree that for the older kids, their hearing needs to be protected.

I also recommend that if the My Little Pony Tea Party comes to your town, and you have a little girl it’s a fun show. But, be prepared to spend some cash on the way out. There is a HUGE souvenir stand with stuffed ponies and magic wands that you cannot avoid unless you can figure out how to sneak out behind the stage LOL.

I think it is great that Mandisa will duet with Michael W. Smith on his Christmas album. Michael, is, I understand, the creme de la creme of the Contemporary Christian genre and it is a great compliment to Mandisa that she was asked to perform with him. I really do expect a bright future for this talented diva on the Contemporary Christian/Gospel circuit. As her second duet, I would love to see her and Daughtry get together for a song or two. Daughtry’s music is so clean that Home is charting in the teens on Christian Con. radio.

The wii can be played with one or more players. Typically, it comes with the “Sports Pack” which has baseball, boxing, bowling, golf and tennis. They have to stand and move around and use the little stick like it’s their baseball bat or golf club or tennis racket. My little guy loves it, and his little sister (who is 3) can already play the baseball a little. Mr. Spense and I like the boxing. You actually use both sticks and jab at the air – which pummels the guy on the screen lol. If you do it long enough, it’s not bad cardio!

Numbers please? How well is “quite well”? Nobody knows for sure until Ken Barnes gets hands on Boxscore numbers. But that ticket coordinator has some first-hand knowledge of how the tour is doing, which isn’t very well…

the quote comes from the Star Tribune….not me….I’m just asking if anybody knows….I guess we will have to wait for Ken Barnes report or something from Forbes.
I hear the tour is going well too, maybe it’s just St. Paul-Minn. that has poor sales.

I am really pissed off on how many people here just continously diss Season 6 contestants. They are a talented bunch!

They all put on a great show.
Blake for example has been getting great reviews everywhere he goes. So please stop complaining on Season 6. They are a great group and I enjoyed them very much. Go talk about Season 5 elsewhere. Like mj said, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s getting old.
    Thank you.

To my knowledge this is a news headline thread.

The discussion was about the season 6 tour and the poor sales as reported in the article.

Does somebody need a timeout? I think they do. Folks who refuse to follow the guidelines will be banned.

And as far as that article. It’s crap. I’ve been to every tour since Season 3 and excellent seats ALWAYS open up a few days before the show. Even for the most popular seasons. Yes, even Season 5. I nabbed front row seats two days before the Manchester show last year.
