‘American Idol’ roundup: What’s new with seven non-winners from past seasons — hear their latest music here

Something different is happening this summer, though. Idol alumni are taking charge of their careers and releasing a whole slew of new music into the world—and I’m not talking about the winners. Sure, David Cook has a new album, and Jordin Sparks is hitting the pavement to promote her new single, but a handful of Idol contestants (like Brooke White, pictured) who didn’t make the finals have new material due, and we’ve gathered them all in one big listening session here just for you.

Comic Legend Jerry Lewis Takes Aim At ‘American Idol’

The star of Encore’s upcoming “Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis, ” a documentary about the 85-year-old comedian’s life and career, took aim at weight loss reality shows and the contestants who try out for FOX juggernaut “American Idol” on Friday at the Television Critics Association Summer Session 2011 in Beverly Hills.

“The kids they get on ‘American Idol, ’ they’re all McDonalds’ wipeouts… They all worked there and now they’re doing that, ” he said of the people who try out for the show.

“We don’t have the soul in our industry that we had when I was working in it, ” he continued. “The soul has been desperately deteriorating [in] it, only because you’ve got a guy running a network whose aunt died and left him some stock.”

Meanwhile…so many Idols have lent a hand to Jerry’s telethon, including Ace Young who has served as guest host.

David Foster To Be Named Head Of Jazz Label (Exclusive)

David Foster is set to take the top spot at esteemed jazz label Verve, THR has learned. The producer-composer-songwriter has worked with Josh Groban, Michael Buble and Andrea Bocelli and has won 15 Grammys.

Foster’s arrival at Verve Music Group, which includes imprints GRP and Impulse (home to John Coltrane’s catalog), is part of Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge’s plan to reinvest in UMG’s creative resources. Under Foster, Verve is expected to shift its focus to adult contemporary pop, or “what David does best, from Groban on down, ” says a source. The label’s roster includes Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall and Ledisi. It also has released albums by Queen Latifah, American Idol alum Katharine McPhee and Treme regular Trombone Shorty.

‘SYTYCD’ Dancers Jordan & Jess Speak Post-Elimination

When Jordan and Jess danced a rhumba on “So You Think You Can Dance” this week, they shared little onstage chemistry–something that likely helped lead to their downfall (both were voted off this week). But ironically, when the two spoke to reporters backstage at “SYTYCD” Thursday, immediately after their elimination, they bantered together quite hilariously, their screwball personalities complementing each other perfectly.

‘SYTYCD’ Judges Discuss Top 8 Week Eliminations

This week on “So You Think You Can Dance’s” results show, while the judges ultimately decided to honor America’s decision and just send the two lowest vote-getters (Jess and Jordan) home, there was still plenty of debate between Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and guest judge Rob Marshall (of Chicago/Nine film fame).

Rob, a Broadway fan and old acquaintance of Jess, understandably fought for Jess, and all three judges agonized over which girl to send home (since both Jordan and Caitlynn’s solos were weak) and which boy to keep (since Jess proved he was more technically skilled, but Tadd was more unique). And all of the judges were surprised to see underdog Ricky finally escape the bottom four this week.

Blake Shelton remains a candid country voice

Backstage at “The Tonight Show” last month, Blake Shelton demonstrated little appetite for meeting Scotty McCreery, the freshly crowned “American Idol” winner with whom Shelton was due to share Jay Leno’s couch that afternoon. But the country singer’s lack of interest seemed less a professional reflex — Shelton just wrapped his first season as a team leader on NBC’s would-be “Idol”-killer, “The Voice” — than it did a byproduct of his determination to get close to Leno’s other guest: “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively.

Keck’s Exclusives: Glee’s Chris Colfer Was Excited for Now-Cancelled Spin-Off

Chris apparently stuck to Fox’s mandate when I spoke to him the morning of his Emmy nomination, insisting that he’d heard no official spin-off talks beyond rumors. However, with his Hollywood film career taking off — as both an actor and screenwriter (he’s
currently starring in Struck By Lightening, a 2012 comedy he wrote) — Chris admitted to some hesitation about relocating across the country should a spin-off take shape. “That would require me to move to New York, ” he said, quickly adding, “but I don’t think I could say no.”

Murphy claims he’d asked the actors for input on their spin-off storylines, and Chris told me he saw Kurt “taking some small internship at Vogue while being part of a Broadway chorus.”

Fellow Emmy nominee Kristin Chenoweth, who guest stars on Glee as washed-up Broadway star April Rhodes, was also excited by the idea of a Glee spin-off, telling me it would be “awesome” to welcome Kurt into the cast of her character’s new musical, Crossroads.

Ryan Murphy vows to keep Lea Michele and Chris Colfer out of New York forever

Murphy: The truth is, I’d been speaking to Lea, Chris and Cory for months about doing a spin-off, perhaps a New York City Julliard-type thing after their characters leave Lima Heights. The way I see it, I can make a bazillion dollars doing one hit show, or I can make two bazillion dollars by chopping that show in half and creating two shows. In an interview, I said they were to graduate and leave Glee, and then those ungrateful little bastards had the audacity to act shocked, which in turn caused thousands of fans to show up on my doorstep with torches and pitchforks. So I was like, “You know what? No. No spin-off! No spin-off for any of you!”

So you really won’t write them a spin-off? Because your feelings are hurt?
Murphy: That’s right. You know, last season’s finale in New York was all about setting the stage for them, but they shat where they ate, and now they’ll starve.

OMG Parody interview with Ryan Murphy is HILARIOUS
