‘AMERICAN IDOLS LIVE’: Blake takes the cake

The “American Idols Live” concert is like spending a fun evening singing karaoke with some of your good friends, except that all of “A.I.” Season 6′s Top 10 can sing better than any of your friends or you. And none of them are drunk.

Based on audience reaction, beat boxer Blake Lewis (right) is San Diego’s favorite. Granted, young girls scream loudly, but Blake had the audience on its feet with his creative and entertaining beat-boxing feats. Chris Richardson, Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle and military man Phil Stacy also proved popular with the crowd.

Here’s how the three-hour evening (including the late start and intermission) went down:…

….Unfortunately, there is a more than 30-minute intermission for some unknown reason, and during the break, videos of Daughtry’s “Home,” Kellie Pickler’s “Red High Heels” and Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” are played … again. Would it have been too difficult to play videos from other “Idol” contestants? Hello? Kelly Clarkson anyone?….

Live Review: American Idols Live in Glendale, AZ

American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks made a triumphant return to her hometown of Glendale, AZ, Wednesday (7/19) as the Top 10 finalists entertained a nearly full house at Jobing.com Arena….

….Runner-up Blake Lewis charmed television audiences with his beat-boxing skills, but live it was incredibly overdone, with nearly every one of his songs featuring his forte. It was subtle in his cover of “Time of the Season,” but the overwrought beat-boxing eventually was like nails on a chalkboard.

Shortly after an intermission, Stacey and Sligh, among others, pushed the audience to audition for season seven of “American Idol.” The self-promotion feel of it didn’t fit well within the show.

It’s unclear whether Sparks will be as successful as former Idols Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson, but at 17 she has the poise, grace and talent of someone 10 years older.

Elliott Yamin: Third Power
The ”American Idol” contestant just missed the cut for season 5′s final two, but he’s not complaining with his sparkling new teeth and the payoff from a bold decision to ”go indie”: a surprise hit with ”Wait For You”

…As luck à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and hard work à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ would have it, Elliott’s first single, ”Wait For You,” is an unexpected hit, and with a new shaggy ‘do and (gifted) $50,000 veneers, he looks poised to be the next solo pop star to break out of the Idol mold. ‘Glad to be working,’ Field says of Emmy nom

…The prolific Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer of Fox’s “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” both of which scored nominations, said the news was “delightful, isn’t it? I’m really happy with it. The live finale of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ is tonight, so it’s a tough day.” “Idol,” nominated 29 times since its 2003 start but with no wins to date, is a team effort, he said. “The worst thing is when you’re not nominated. It’s sort of a ritual and it’s terrific and fantastic to be nominated, and we don’t think, ‘We’re going to win!’ Each year, we say it can’t be ‘The Amazing Race’ again and then we go congratulate ‘The Amazing Race.’ It’s a shame we all start with the same ‘A’ vowel. My ass is always half off of the seat when they start to read the winner and you hear the ‘Aaaa’ sound.” Remarking on the previous season of “Idol,” Lythgoe said, “With ‘Idol Gives Back,’ we really went to town and had some good mentors: the editors; the camera teams; the director, Bruce Gowers, who doesn’t know what’s going to hit him every week.” He said that shooting for four days in Africa and on locations in the U.S. like New Orleans “was like two finales, and we were continuing to do the show, and a lot of hard work went into it.” Next up, “Idol” starts production at month’s end with the San Diego auditions as well as the start of another Lythgoe show, Fox’s “The Search for the Next Great American Band.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ …

Emmy tidbits: From ‘Idol’ to ‘SNL’

…The good news for “American Idol” on Thursday was the same as the bad news: seven Emmy nominations, its second-highest total ever, including a fifth consecutive in the reality-competition category. What could be bad about that? Only that “Idol” has lost all 22 of its Emmy races. Were “Idol” to lose in all seven of its nominated categories, it will beat the all-time record for Emmy futility of 25 winless noms set by “The Bob Newhart Show.” All the top-rated show needs to do to avoid the dubious achievement is win once, but that could well prove too tall an order for a season that gave us Sanjaya…

Hicks gave heart and soul to his shot on Idol

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been just over a year since Birmingham, Ala., native Taylor Hicks won first place in the fifth season of American Idol. Some more numbers from Ken Barnes today:

“Taylor’s Just to Feel That Way, the first single from the album, has sold 8,700 downloads. The current single, Heaven Knows, has 7,700 sold… Katharine’s new single, Love Story… 31,000 sold so far,”

In that same article that jpfan is quoting from, Ken has this to say about Bo:

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Will [Taylor] still be recording for BMG or, like Boà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s upcoming second album, go indie?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Ken is spending to much tine read these fans chat-sites. Why wouldn’t Taylor still be recording for BMG. Didn’t he win AI. Bo, just all the runner-ups before him, unfortunately had to prove himself with cd sales. And, who really knows why he was dropped. At It seems as if some is very quick to label Taylor a failure because of his cd sales but don’t be so quick to dismiss him. I kinda of recall a young lady who was quickly dismissed by some fans as a failure but is now more established than all of the Idols. I know we follow the AI pattern of measuring success by cd sales but in the real world it’s about establishing yourself as an artist and not just a cd seller..

  • sammy

Said it before (sigh) and will say it again. Most artists would be thrilled to have sales of almost 700,000 CD’s. I wonder how many of BMG’s singers have sold that many. Gotta stop comparing Taylor’s sales to that of other Idols,IMO.

Blake seems to be the favorite on the AI tour this year judging from what I’m reading (haven’t seen the show). I wonder how his music will sell? I’m guessing that he will (at least initially) be the top seller. There I go comparing…. :lol_wp:

This is what I got off his webcite it states that billboard announced :
    BO is signed with indie lable à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“StratArtà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I managed to find the article:

    BO BICE

    TBA (StartArt)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Sept. TBA

Season four “American Idol” runner-up Bice is getting back to his Southern roots on the follow-up to his 2005 debut, “The Real Thing.” “I enjoyed ‘The Real Thing,’ but [the new album] is more a labor of love,” says the Helena, Ala., native, now inked to indie StartArt. “It’s really me getting back to the roots of what Bo is, which is a Southern rock album and nothing more.” Recorded in Nashville with producer Frank Liddell, the album boasts more songwriting credits from Bice, who had little say the first time around. He also hand-picked all of his collaborators, including Gary Nichols and Chris Tompkins, whom Bice has known for more than a decade. “American Blood,” one song co-penned by the pair, is a slower, country-driven support song for U.S. troops.

  • Tony

I believe that that’s what I read in my Billboard Magazine (that he’s signed with StratArt). I’ll check when I get home.

And Elliott was too nice about season 6. They flat out sucked; the general consensus was that season 6 wasn’t as good as ANY year, let alone season 5.

  • Kirsten

That article also mentions Carrie and Jordin’s new album (Carrie’s says pretty much what we’ve seen in the press releases)

    JORDIN SPARKS

    TBA (Arista)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ November TBA

Jordin Sparks has been doing what most “American Idol” winners doà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ juggling rehearsals for the American Idols Live tour while planning and recording her debut album. “I definitely want [the album] to be radio-friendly,” says Sparks, who’s been in the studio with the production team Stargate. “I would love to do a mix between, like, Kelly Clarkson and Beyoncà ©. That kind of sound would be really cool.”

So, Billboard thinks she’s signed to Arista.

  • sexygirl

Back to the topic of Bo. As I said before, no one really knows why he was let go but I really don’t feel that it was because of cd sales.

Technically with AI, only the winner gets a multi-record deal. It seems as if the runner-ups are given a one cd record deal with option to extend if the record company chooses to. I think since Clay sold so well his first time out he contract was extended. Diana Degarmo and Justin were let out of their contract. Again, don’t know the real reasons behind their situation either. My feels with Bo being dropped, if he was indeed dropped, has more to do with his health than his cd sales. Bo has been quite sick for quite a while and still seems to be have problems with his health. That cannot bode well for him, as far as meeting a cd deadline. If the record label feels his health is more of a hinderance than it’s worth, I could see them not extending his record contract.

  • jpfan

Elliott’s indie deal is still a little murky. Who paid Stargate for the two songs on the album? They’re huge hitmakers and I’m sure don’t normally give songs to third place idol finishers. I figured Elliott financed the album himself. Anyway, it’s paid off for all concerned. Wait for You is becoming a bigger hit daily.

I think Constantine has the same indie deal as Elliott. I didn’t realize winners got multi album deals. So there are perks to winning after all.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Why is it conceivable. Are you going to tell me that if Elliott had gotten a chance to sign with a top notch commercial record label he would pass it up for an Indie label.

Well, you would have to ask Elliott, but I think he seems happy right where he is. Not only does he get a bigger piece of the pie, but he got to make the record that he wanted. It’s not unheard of for artists to leave big labels for smaller labels or to start their own. It happens.

And Elliott was too nice about season 6. They flat out sucked; the general consensus was that season 6 wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t as good as ANY year, let alone season 5.

Seriously? Do you have empirical evidence of this claim? j/k. Actually, I think this years crop is terribly underestimated by the critics. They are a talented bunch, they were just unfortunate enough to come at a time when the show became so big, the show itself overshadowed the contestants. TPTB are going to have to right this if the show is to remain the outrageous ratings success it’s been.

Sammy, I also noticed that overall Blake seems to be getting good reviews on the tour. I am looking forward to the Tacoma show to see how they’ve progressed since Tampa. :)

As for Bo, it doesn’t really matter to me if he was dropped or if he asked out of his contract. I’m just glad he’s going to make the album he wants to now. I hope he’s healthy.

“I kinda of recall a young lady who was quickly dismissed by some fans as a failure but is now more established than all of the Idols.”

Jennifer (presumably) or anyone else isn’t more established than Kelly and Carrie–or even Fantasia or Chris. Both have multiple grammies, critical not just retail awards, peer praise and respect, and are two of the biggest stars in their genres–even if My December struggles. And Jennifer has to excel w/ original material to be a true musical not just acting artist. Plus it takes more than one role–no matter how successful–to establish oneself in the movie industry.

Makes me wonder when writers will ever stop the this- idol-is-better-than-that-idol schtick.

Agreed. I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Yaminion, so I love it when the press says something nice about my boy. But I will be forever grateful to Taylor for the LMBO “shadow” concerts last year–not just for the one I was fortunate enough to attend, but for all the others whose clips showed up on youtube. Taylor and Elliott rocking the sh*t out of “Use Me”? Priceless!

Though I will be going to the AI concert this year, it’s a little bit of a letdown that there will be no uber-cool after-concert concert. Taylor shined in that element, and I suspect that a few of the current crew could really cut loose and have a blast, too. Imagine Melinda doing “Me and Bobby McGee,” Phil whipping out some old-school Hank Williams Sr., or Gina killing “Landslide.”

Technically with AI, only the winner gets a multi-record deal. It seems as if the runner-ups are given a one cd record deal with option to extend if the record company chooses to. I think since Clay sold so well his first time out he contract was extended.

For at least the first 3 seasons Sony/BMG signed anyone they wanted to, they get first rights to any of the top 12 they want. The ones they don’t sign must wait 90 days after the finale before signing with anyone or even talking about any deals they may be looking at.

Clay has a multi CD contract. Most likely 5 CDs or 7 years, whichever comes first. The label can drop anyone at any time but the artist can’t drop the label. I’m sure if he could have, Clay would be long gone from RCA. He recently told some fans at a M&G that his 4th CD may take a long time to materialize because he will hold out for originals if it takes many years of fighting. He does not want to make another covers CD like Clive wants. It could get ugly.

  • bambambam

Elliott is signed as a recording artist to a publishing company that also has him signed as a songwriter, Sony/ATV, which has just started up a label, Hickory, which has no in-house sales or promotion or distribution functions. It’s not corporately connected to SonyBMG’s labels like J or Arista or Columbia.

Sony/ATV owns massive numbers of classic songs, like the entire Lennon/McCartney Beatles catalogue, as publishers. They also have as writers big hit makers like Stargate. Basically, Sony/ATV asked their own current hit writers to kick in a song or two for the project. How did Stargate get paid? Probably there was something paid for the time spent in making the record…but Sony/ATV paid the big bucks to sign Stargate’s publishing to begin with. So it was Sony/ATV’s obviously good relationship with its currently signed writers that made it possible for Elliott to get a crack at something as A-list as “Wait For You.” That could easily have gone to Omarion, Usher, Mario, Ruben, you name it. But Elliott got the friends-and-family deal from a fellow Sony/ATV signee.

  • bambambam

Ohhh, PS, I wish Elliott could put out something as hardcore R&B as “Bed” by J. Holiday, which was written by a guy who goes by the name “The Dream,” who co-wrote “Umbrella.” That song’s going to be a monster.

  • jpfan

Thank you so much bambambam for explaining the Sony/ATV deal. They kicked in the songs, Elliott was probably responsible for his own promo.

I guess Sony/ATV figured Elliott had enough fans from idol to make some money. It was probably a very inexpensive album to make since Elliott’s counsin owned the recording studio and produced it. So E got a discount there as well. :)

With this kind of deal, people can probably make some $ even without monster sales. I wonder how Constantine will do.

I am a member of BoBice.com, Bos official website and over there they say he is signed with StratArt like you guys said. His CD is due out Sept 17th or 18th..too lazy to go look..lol. You can go to BoBice.com and look at the front page there is a contest to design Bo’s new CD cover and I dont think you have to be a member to do that. The new CD will probably be called “American Blood” after a song Bo wrote for the troops. It is a great song. I saw Bo in Bessemer, AL a few weeks ago and his new songs are wonderful. I recorded a few and put this one on Youtube.

I’m sorry I messed up the first time I posted that Constantine article and then double-posted. Sheesh!

Oh well, as Constantine himself says, “As long as they’re talking about me, that’s all that matters.” Heh.

Certainly it must be easier to gaze toward Phoebe than Simon Cowell.
Yeah, a little bit. Although he might have liked it. He did call me ”smoldering.”

    Oh Constantine…LMAO

Thanks later – Big Bo fan here. I love that acoustic singer/songwriter stuff he’s putting out. Good for Bo for reverting back to his true musical self and puttin’ out some great music! This is what I wanted to hear after Idol and if switching record companies enabled him to do this, then I say more power to him. I might actually buy this CD (I never did the first).

    RUMOR MILL

ALL CLEAR: Clear Channel Radio will no longer stipulate that indie and unsigned acts waive their digital rights in return for the airplay CCR is required to give the indie sector as part of its payola settlement, Digital Music News revealed this morning. The requirement raised the ire of groups like the Future of Music Coalition, which filed a formal complaint with the FCC, while also prompting a Senate inquiry. The new wording in the contract states: “In the instance when Clear Channel makes the decision to use the content for terrestrial broadcasting and, as a result, for simultaneous transmission through online streaming … Clear Channel shall be subject to and pay for all applicable current and future statutory royalties as well as public performance royalties.” A copy of the revised contract can be found at http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/stories/0719007clear. CAILLAT BUBBLING OVER, NOW 25 AND HOW
    Universal Republicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Colbie Caillat Crashes Top 5, Thanks to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bubbly,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ UMe’s Now 25 in Line for #1

…Otherwise, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s pretty much business as usual. UMeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s release of Now 25, the latest edition of the best-selling hits compilation set, will easily be #1, with a total that looks now to be between 220-230k, but could go even higher, depending on weekend traffic.

    Disneyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hannah Montana 2 remains strong at #2, with between 120-125k, leapfrogging repeat winner T.I.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Grand Hustle/Atlantic album, which drops to #3, followed by last weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s runner-up, Repriseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Smashing Pumpkins, at #4.

New Lineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hairspray soundtrack takes advantage of the film version of the musical based on the 1988 John Waters movie, starring John Travolta no less playing the role popularized by the late cross-dresser Divine and then Harvey Fierstein on Broadway, set to land at #6 with between 50-55k in sales, or even higher depending on the weekend box office. That would put it in a dogfight with WBà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Linkin Park, Interscope/A&Mà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Fergie and RCA/RMGà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Kelly Clarkson. Universal Republic chanteuse Winehouse (50-55k) rounds out the Top 10.

(I swear I am not a posting bot, peeps. I just need to be reminded that the next time I go out with friends on a Friday night, I don’t end that night drinking one tall cup of cafe americano, with half a refill. Heh.)

And also regarding Elliott, I thought it was an interesting tidbit to learn the conditions of Elliott’s deal with Simon Fuller: that he could do whatever he wanted, just that he had to hold off his release until all of the BMG-signed Idols released. Seems pretty reasonable.

    MJ:

Seriously? Do you have empirical evidence of this claim? j/k. Actually, I think this years crop is terribly underestimated by the critics. They are a talented bunch, they were just unfortunate enough to come at a time when the show became so big, the show itself overshadowed the contestants. TPTB are going to have to right this if the show is to remain the outrageous ratings success ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been.

Don’t get me wrong, though. While this season remains to be my least favorite of the six, I did have my favorite singers: Stephanie, Melinda, Phil & Jordin. I’m not a hardcore fan of theirs like I am Elliott’s (lol), but they were the only ones that kept the show together for me.

Phil was terrible for a while, but I think he progressively improved. Stephanie left WAY too early. And post-Idol expectations or not, Melinda, hands-down deserved to win….especially over BLAKE (can’t wait for his 70% beat boxing, 20% musical production, 10% singing album).

Jordin can definitely sing…but after 6 years of American Idol…meh. Been there, done that.

That’s what makes Taylor unique, when you hear his music, his voice is instantly recognizable.

Did Kelly Clarkson Commit Career Suicide?
The Decision to Challenge Music Mogul Clive Davis May Have Backfired

Did Grammy-winning singer Kelly Clarkson commit career suicide when she took on the iconic music industry executive Clive Davis?

Yes, is what some pop-music charters are whispering as U.S. sales of Clarkson’s third album, “My December,” begin to slide.

  • griz

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s what makes Taylor unique, when you hear his music, his voice is instantly recognizable.

By not following in a ‘pop’ genre and not being a ‘pop singer’, as more and more people are beginning to realize, the pressure is really off of him at this point. He can release a more true-to-style second album, where expectations of sales are lower and get a much more grittier, soulful, bluesy album. I’ll exchange big sales numbers for a more satisfying record any day of the week.
