Tacoma farewell: The Idols Live Tour rides off into the sunset

On the second night of the 2009 Idols Live tour, the 10 were settling comfortably into their lives as wandering rock stars. At 3 p.m., the day was gray, frigid and windy outside the Tacoma Dome. The subdued crowd of a hundred or so leaned in eerie silence against the metal barricade as Megan Joy walked down the row singing autographs and posing for pictures. ‘ ¨  Inside, the ancient Dome seemed like it was just waking up, a universe away from the frenzied hub of activity around the tour kickoff at the Paul Allen-built Portland stadium. In a cafeteria-like room set up with round tables and folding chairs, half the Idols came to visit the four members of the press corps on hand.

Building up to Show 2, gone already was the repressed frenzy of anticipation the Idols felt in the hours before the show. Now that it was over, nearly all confessed to fighting back serious attacks of nerves, either from excitement of fear, in the countdown to Sunday night’s show. The giddiness that followed opening night seemed to have led the Idols’ emotional roller coaster on a long loop-the-loop; the group reported staying up until 5 a.m. Monday, despite fatigue, to celebrate their their bow.

Scenes from American Idols Live

A point of disclosure: I’m not the biggest ‘American Idol’ fan. Just don’t get it, actually. It’s kind of like televised karaoke, minus the sloppy drunks singing hideously off-key versions of Crue tunes before hitting the parking lot for a quick chunder. (For the record: Always entertaining.) So over the course of eight seasons, I’ve tuned in only about as much as my nine to five required; that is to say, I mainly just followed local boys Sanjaya, Blake Lewis and A.J. Gil (remember him? Season one?) and ignored most of the rest.

But I must confess that, as jaded as I am, I may have caught just a smidge of Lambert mania Tuesday night.

Adam Lambert On Coming Out & the ‘Idol’ Tour

The “American Idol 2009 Summer Tour” kicked off on July 5. Now, ET talks to season eight runner-up Adam Lambert about the tour, his upcoming album and why he chose to wait so long to come out.

ET: Can you talk about how you envision your upcoming album?

Adam Lambert: I am so excited, because I am getting to write with the top people in the business and that is such an honor. I never would have never gotten that opportunity if it hadn’t been for this. A lot of people go, “Are you rock, or are you pop? What’s your genre?” I did a bunch of different genres on “Idol,” so I don’t know why I have to pick one. It will definitely have elements of rock, but the production on it, the instrumentation sonically will be very modern and electronic. The word “pop” as a classification means that it is popular. All that really entails is that it is catchy. So, I want to write a bunch of catchy, rock-electro, dance, disco things with a lot of glam to it. Glam is about the visual presentation. It has very little to do with the actual music.

Jennifer Hudson definitely pregnant; baby bump evident at Michael Jackson memorial

Jennifer Hudson has never confirmed her pregnancy, but her baby bump was quite clear in photos taken before the Michael Jackson memorial at the Staples Center today (either that, or Usher is getting a little handsy).

A friend did confirm that the singer is expecting a baby with boyfriend David Otunga after the Chicago papers reported the baby shower last month. She’s believed to be about eight months pregnant now.

American Idol Justin Guarini Shifts Into Drivetime At Slot-1

Ambler, PA (PRWEB) July 8, 2009 — The soothing ambience of Slot-1 Studios has catered to an eclectic taste of musicianship over the years. Just recently, Philadelphia based jazz sextet Drivetime brings 2002 American Idol Runner Up Justin Guarini to the mic plate, where he lead sings to a handful of classic from ‘What You Won’t Do’ to ‘Let’s Stay Together’. These jazz style renditions will be featured on Drivetime’s new studio album titled “Reflections”, due to release sometime in August.

The new release was recorded and mixed by Slot-1 Studio’s very own Rick Denzien, where he also co-produced the record. “Reflections has the honest sound of real instruments, human feel and human taste”, stated Denzien. “This version pays homage to the original, written and released by the great Bobby Caldwell.”

Has the balance of power shifted to producers?

Does the potential alliance between Sir Philip Green and Simon Cowell indicate that TV content producers are truly the senior partners in the broadcaster/producer relationship?

NO – Matt Jagger, Creative managing partner, Naked
As I understand it, Cowell and Green are seeking to become broadcasters as well as producers. This is the Disney model. Produce the content and broadcast it yourself, then you are in control of both the major revenue streams – rights and advertising.

With the rise of online, it is now easier for producers to become broadcasters. But the difficulty is in making this pay and retaining audience – that is something the existing major broadcasters are better at.

Michael Jackson memorial: Jennifer Hudson sings ‘Will You Be There’

What: Jennifer Hudson’s “Will You Be There.” The knockout “American Idol” vocalist took on Jackson’s 1991 single, transforming it into a rousing, feel-good anthem. The set had a bit more choreography than the other performances thus far, and it moved the proceedings away from the more restrained recent performances.

But it worked, for the most part, and that’s largely due to the strength of Hudson as a vocalist who can reach for the stars as well as any singer. Things drifted a bit toward Hallmark-like hokeyness toward the end, as Hudson stepped back to make way for Jackson’s recorded vocals. The Times’ Ann Powers is inside the Staples Center. Her reaction: “In a truly angelic white dress, Hudson takes the stage and sings, ‘Hold me like the River Jordan,’ ” the opening refrain from the song.

Memorial moments: What they said, what they sang

All eyes were on L.A. as fans, famous friends and family gathered to honor Michael. USA TODAY reflects on memorable moments.

Hear the sadness in her voice

Mariah Carey set the stage for a succession of reverent musical tributes with a dramatic but un-divalike performance. Re-creating her hit cover of the Jackson 5 classic I’ll Be There with Trey Lorenz, Carey seemed tentative at first, her trademark hand gestures betraying emotional intensity more than technical affectation. As her voice gained power and confidence, its slight hoarseness made the lyrics seem more plaintive. “We never will say goodbye,” Carey sang at the end. She added, speaking softly, “We miss you.”

Lyndsey Parker (Reality Rocks Blog), from yahoo posted a video of some people who got rejected from trying out for American Idol this year. Its interesting to hear them sing for her, some of them are really good! The wanna be contestants say that the first part of the audition is more about how you will look on tv, etc. rather than the person’s actual voice. They are being told that they sing good but they aren’t what they are looking for. I wonder what they are looking for? lol Take a look: http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/realityrocks/247825/american-idol-reality-rocks-season-9-lost-auditions-episode/

I think Mariah was nervous as well because I don’t think her upper register is as reliable as it used to be and add on top the emotion of the moment. I’ve seen her singing live a few times this year and you can tell she’s struggling a bit to hit those old high notes.

  • BootStar

That Lyndsey video was very eye-opening. It makes me wonder if each set of producers in these initial auditions has a specific “role” or two they’re supposed to cast.

And to the dude dressed like pre-Idol David Cook (including the hideous bleached bangs): David looked awful like that and you do too! Luckily for Dave, he had an amazing set of pipes.

Actually I believe the abbreviation for Monsieur is a simple M. ah but plural monsieurs are Mssrs., par example Mssrs. Allen et Lambert

ah but apparently some Americans use Mssr. as the singular though apparently incorrect, I knowTMI, check the things out, journalists

or is that some suggestion Mr. Lambert has multiple personalities?

Mariah has been struggling to hit those high notes for a number of years. As she’s aged she has lost a lot of her upper range. But she hasn’t adjusted her arrangements to her current voice.

IMO Mariah’s recorded version of “I’ll Be There” is even better than Michael’s but that was some time ago.

Mariah Carey set the stage for a succession of reverent musical tributes with a dramatic but un-divalike performance.

She sure seemed like a diva to me — low cut dress, flashing her big diamond ring several times — but that’s Mariah!

  • ptslittlecomment

On the Today Show this morning, the show’s commentator on the event said Mariah did her song completely cold, having no rehearsal or warm-up. He also said her voice cracked when she caught site of Jackson’s casket. In a quick interview, Mariah said she “kinda felt like (I) have let everybody down”. But she said it was heartfelt.

  • lavender1960

It was subdued for Mariah, bwah. She has clearly adjusted her newer material to her current vocal range though. I love her new stuff too and I agree her studio version of I’ll Be There is even better than MJ. And not many people can improve on MJ. John Mayer was on Larry King Live and he said he chose not to sing because he said, and I paraphrase, I have a limited vocal range, that is why I write my songs to suit my limited vocal range and I was already humbled by being invited so there was no way I was going to ruin things by attempting to sing a MJ song, wise move.

  • debbie

Mssrs. – Monsieur (plural: Messieurs) meant “my lord” (mon seigneur) in Middle French, and is now generally used in French as an honorific for all men (not possessing a knighthood or some higher rank), the equivalent to the English titles “Mister” and (in some senses) “Sir”.

Mssrs is the plural of Mr. It seems like that writer was trying to be chic and doesn’t know the singular is …. Mr.

I find it disingenuous for someone who doesn’t watch the show to decide that Adam should have won. Yes, I agree that Adam is quite the showman and I enjoy many of his performances. But I still feel that Kris should have won … and DID.

I just wish Kris wasn’t wearing brown and plaid on the tour. Is this what Adam helped him pick out? Color me surprised.

  • unique28v

That Lyndsey video was very eye-opening. It makes me wonder if each set of producers in these initial auditions has a specific ‘role’ or two they’re supposed to cast.

I think they have a certain “type” that they want to win each year, in addition to casting the show. Now, that type doesn’t always win, but I think they have something specific in mind as they screen, which is why Simon/Paula/Randy/kara dont’ get to see everyone. If they did, maybe more true singers and less personality would get through to the show.

  • http://krisallenonline.blogspot.com/ kizgold

  • suebrody

Lyndsey’s video is spot on. (Marty is cute, but should not have gone in as Cook Redux. ;) ) I have the feeling that the Adam look-a-likes are not going very far unless they are VERY, VERY GOOD. I sometimes *do* wonder what they are looking for. For example, Kris came a *long* way (VERY LONG, AMAZING WAY) from his first audition before the judges, and I am guessing he was chosen because 1) he is cute, and 2) he is humble, aw shucks and they thought it would be one of those feel-good stories (the guy from Arkansas). And playing the guitar, as with Matt, gave him a huge advantage. I think we know why they went for Michael, Jorge, Lil, Alexis (sigh, no Tour, sigh), Scott (who I thought has a very weak audition before the judges), Danny, Allison, Adam, Jasmine (the next Jordin, they hoped), and Anoop (the diversity of singers and/or their *stories*). Megan stood out for her quirkiness. And then there were Tatiana (ugh) and Normund (funny, but really? Top 36?!), not to mention the ever-irritating Bikini Girl, but this is a reality TV show, and we can’t forget that.

I tend to think that the Top 10 (and certainly the Top 5 or 6) are deserving every year, but a lot of good talent gets lost in the mix before they even see the judges. And, as Marty said, Jordin auditioned more than once to get chosen, and that is the case with both Idol and SYTYCD.

  • lavender1960

Well saying Adam should have ended the show indicates a journalist who did not do his homework before hand or wasn’t awake enough during the concert to notice that the performance order is in the order of placement on the show and ever shall it be.

PS Apparently Mssr. is an archaic form of the singular Monsieur, which is no longer used by the French, like for centuries, they would be, ooh la la those American journalists, getting it wrong again, tsk tsk.

PSS. According to the Urban Dictionary, that “wonderful” online source of slang, using Mssr before someone’s last name is now a derogatory reference meaning that person is arrogant or conceited – the listing was made in 2005. Even more reason why you need to proof read and check these things out as a journalist.

Another Adam Single to be released in mid-July

Another independent producer is getting ready to release an Adam Lambert single. My guess is that this is not an approved release.

    1. There are some claims that Adam was working on this recording yesterday before the concert. But I think that is people misreading the tweets (see below):

    2. Adam Worked with producer/songwriter J. Scott G. six months before Adam auditioned for AI, on a song called “Live the Life.”

Well, here’s what J. Scott G. posted on his official blog:

    http://jscottg.blogspot.com/2009/06/austin.html?zx=fb96cf163df3e844

Oh yeah, you might also be wondering where the song with Adam Lambert is. It’s coming. I swear. I’m making the final adjustments to it and flying to LA soon to mix it. Look out for a mid July release… along with some amazing remixes. It’s all in the works now. I’ll also be starting a photo album of my adventures here soon on Myspace and Facebook, as well as some video blogs from the studio ….

    3. Based on some tweets from Tuesday, it seems they were working on the production yesterday and some fans took these tweets to mean they were in Tacoma working with Adam. Here are some of the related tweets:

buckmorello: Spent most of the day working on the new tune with Adam Lambert… This song is massive.
    1 minute ago from Ping.fm

BTW, buckmorello is J. Scott. G., electronica/dance songwriter/producer from San Francisco, and now Austin, TX. http://twitter.com/buckmorello

markusreuter: Selling out? Power chords, palm mute parts, tapped and slapped bass on U8 for J Scott G’s song with Adam Lambert (American Idol) on vocals.

Evidently someone questioned this Mark guy on the “selling out” part and he replied with this:

markusreuter: @djmrcooley Nah, not selling out… It’s fun and sounds awesome! There simply wasn’t any more room for a smiley in that tweet. :-)
about 7 hours ago from web in reply to djmrcooley

Well saying Adam should have ended the show indicates a journalist who did not do their homework before hand or wasn’t awake enough during the concert to notice that the performance order is in the order of placement on the show and ever shall it be.

Well, he did say that he wasn’t really a fan of AI, so it’s possible that he wasn’t aware that the winner has to close the show, or watched enough AI to know where everyone finished in the competition.

  • suebrody

How many more of these singles are gonna come out of the woodwork? Is there anything Adam or 19 can do about this? I hope that they are good and more importantly that Adam will get a share of the royalties.

  • lavender1960

Well when I went to the American Idol concert last year, they made it pretty clear with the placement numbers coming on screen behind each performer as they started their set but then again yes I already knew the order of finish quite well. Not sure if they are doing that again this year – did the journo think those were IQ numbers? But common sense would dictate the winner closes – certainly not going to start with the winner and end with No. 10 then you will see a mass exodus at half time.

  • lavender1960

Good question suebrody how many people hopping on the demo train?

  • Q3

Regarding the Ernest Jasmine review (Tacoma News Trib.), I think he misclassified the updating of Let’s Dance as “Minneapolis Funk” — it didn’t sound anything like that to me. I loved Prince and that whole sound in the 80′s, but just because there were some funk-rock elements, synth sounds and electro beats doesn’t make it MF in my book.

But maybe I’m not as smart as Ernest! LOL

I thought Bowie’s Let Dance was his homage to the disco era in general because some Bowie fans were not happy with that song at the time, I recall the word “sell out”. I loved the song so I’d say reinvention peeps.

PS Ah ha, Nile Rodgers produced that song for Bowie which is why it reminded me on another listen to an very early INXS song, Original Sin, which was produced by Nile Rodgers. A funk master indeed but not of the Minneapolis school. Niles had his own school of disco/funk.

In those initial rounds, the screeners are told to choose for personality and presence–and I’m sure they are giving pointers for what kind of “characters” to look for. They don’t screen for vocal ability until later rounds.

  • Sassycatz

I wonder what they are looking for?

I read somewhere that they seemed to be favoring the girls, which would make sense since they’ve had two male winners in a row.

I really liked a couple of those people — the Indian American girl was very personable and the one heavy set young woman who said she wouldn’t try again had quite a powerful voice. I wish the guy that looked a bit like audition-David Cook would’ve actually given us a few bars of his song. I was curious what he sounded like. Made me think he wasn’t that good when he sidestepped the invitation to sing.

    Happy Birthday (remix)

It is not certain that he actually worked with Adam yesterday, but possible that he worked with Adam’s vocals on a track that they worked on pre-AI. It would have nothing to do with 19/RCA, just another ‘Want’ situation… There is a thread on IDF about it..

It appears to be even more opportunistic than “Want”. J. Scott. G, the producer/songwriter first promoted this upcoming single in mid-March — when Adam made the Top 13.

And, I don’t see any way that Adam would have worked with him yesterday. And reallly doubt this is an “endorsed” effort.

I just saw Kris’ Heartless and Ain’t No Sunshine and I like both a lot. It is crazy how different his set is from Adam’s; two different concerts. I’d like to see Kris in a much more intimate setting, with a small band backing him up (sort of like Cook’s, maybe, like at colleges, but not rocked-out). I don’t see him fronting the KRIS ALLEN band. ;) Of course Kris should go last, but, without seeing the transition but seeing Adam’s Bowie medley, I think it has to be a kind of WTF moment. (I haven’t seen the transition, so I can’t say, however.) I like the way it was described (by Richard Rushfield, maybe?) as a kind of cooling down after a heatwave. Okay, that’s not at all what he said, but that’s what I see it as. I mean, you go through an aerobic workout, and then you have a nice relaxing shower afterwards. :)

There are probably going to be 100 singles coming out before Adam’s album. I’m kicking myself for buying Want now. No more demos for me, or anything that isn’t specifically authorized by him (and 19).

  • Vada

suebrody, Bright Lights is not exactly a relaxing shower. Before the tour, Kris described the concept as each of them having their own show. They are meant to stand alone, rather than as part of one unit.

  • AC

I’m thinking that Kris will be get a big reception in Little Rock because that show is sold out! I don’t know if any of the others are?

The only reason I would want to see Kris in an intimate setting is that it means that I’ll be close to him no matter what seats i get. hehe.. other than that, it sounds like he more than holds his own in his own set in a bigger setting so it all sounds good!

  • Kirsten

suebrody, Bright Lights is not exactly a relaxing shower.

Maybe it’s the part of the relaxing shower when your kid flushes the toilet. That always perks me up.

LOL at all the analogies. I have a bad habit of making them all fall apart in my head.

If each performance were a tree, what kind of tree would it be?
    (seriously, don’t do it!)

Adam to appear on an MJ tribute album!!
According to TVWeek , http://www.tvweek.com/tvmojoe/2009/07/michael-jackson-mania-whats-next.php How awesome is that!!

  • Q3

suebrody, Bright Lights is not exactly a relaxing shower. Before the tour, Kris described the concept as each of them having their own show. They are meant to stand alone, rather than as part of one unit.

But there are 3 Kris songs before he gets to “Bright Lights”. I still think it is jarring to go from the big-production Bowie medly to just Kris on the stage doing Heartless with his guitar, drapped stage and the spotlight.

They made a lot of small but important adjustments to Kris set for the second show. For example, I like the Seattle Hey Jude a lot better than the Portland version — it’s more animated. My guess it that Kris will keep working on these performances and getting better.

It’s easy to forget that for all 10, including Adam, have only done two big concerts — ever. I expect them all to get better with experience.

  • suebrody

Vada, I didn’t mean it as disrespectful. I love Kradam. However, it IS one show, so while they are mini-sets, they are still part of the overall concert. The whole is the sum of its parts. Which is part of the reason I would want to skip certain pieces of the overall concert puzzle (I cannot even go to that tree place, Kirsten ;-) ).

I would like to see Kris in an intimate setting b/c I loved Kris’s Heartless so much on Idol. I liked when I saw it on YouTube from the concerts, but it just didn’t *hit* me the way it did on Idol. Same with Ain’t No Sunshine…and I still disliked NB. I will always dislike NB, no matter where Kris and/or Adam sings it. When I say intimate settings, I don’t mean a coffee house that seats 50 people, I just mean a smaller venue (one that seats maybe 2000 people rather than 7-14,000 people).

Here’s a quote from the article:

So what’s next? Let’s count the possibilities… with the major caveat that what follows is only slightly informed speculation, nothing more.

It’s the author speculating on possibilities, it’s not fact.

I don’t understand why it is “jarring” go to from Adam to Kris.

Besides festivals where there are many artists performing and often they are all over the map musically, which I frankly enjoy, especially discovering new artists, I have been to concerts with just one artist and they go from balls out rock, four guitars a wailing, [I love four guitars a wailing] drums beaten to a pulp with full light show, to the lights turned down low, maybe just a spotlight on the lead singer, keyboard and drums, maybe an acoustic guitar, doing a quiet gut wrenching ballad or two or three and then back to the balls out rock.

  • Q3

“Don’t forget the tribute album(s). Expect all of Jackson’s catalogue to be used for a CD of big stars singing his music, released right around Thanksgiving. Adam Lambert of “American Idol” will be on this disc.” :clap_tb:

This is so cool. Adam is one of the few current male vocalists who is a high tenor, like MJ — way different vocal quality and style of course. But few men can sing most of MJ’s songs in the original key and arrangement. Justin Timberlake is the another signer who is high tenor. So this could be a really one.

Vada, I didn’t mean it as disrespectful. I love Kradam. However, it IS one show, so while they are mini-sets, they are still part of the overall concert.

And it is the same audience who just saw/heard a really powerful and energic performance. I can’t remember ever seeing two acts, back to back with no intermission, stacked like this in a concert. And I’ve been to a lot of concerts.

IMO is is not fair to the audience to force them into this sensory shift.

I would love to know how long they take to go from Adam to Kris. Perhaps someone who was at one of the concerts can report.

I would like to see Kris in an intimate setting b/c I loved Kris’s Heartless so much on Idol. I liked when I saw it on YouTube from the concerts, but it just didn’t *hit* me the way it did on Idol. Same with Ain’t No Sunshine’ ¦

I agree completely. When you watch some of the video from the upper level of Kris performing Heartless, he just looks like a spec on the stage. IMO Kris should either have had a bigger production for Heartless — which could have been a great opening number — or done something else first.

For example, Adam does Mad World, as a lone soloist on the stage, but it is produced for a big stage. There is no reason that Heartless could not have been produced for an arena — and Kris could have done the exact same performance — but it would have been more suitable for the arena. Perhaps without the plaid shirt!!

  • AC

I agree with Lavender1960- they do that with a lot of radio concerts and they have a wide range of acts in those too.

So does anybody know what the attendance percantage is for these concerts? or what other shows have sold out?

Also, regarding J. Scott G. ‘” he even has a photo of Adam standing next to him posted on his official blog, that is photoshopped. Unless I am mistaken that Adam photo is an old Adam photo that is just Adam.

If those two photos are meant to look like one, that is a really crap-poor photoshop job [photochop? heh]. That pic of Adam is one of the original Idol photos from the AI site.

Archie has been feeling ill lately, but fortunately he reports in his most recent tweet that he is feeling better…

Ugh I feel terrible. No fun being sick. Thankfully we have 2 days off, so hopefully I’ll be ok by the next show lol. (about 20 hours ago)

Thanks @realbrookewhite! Just been trying to rest and haven’t been on the computer much today since I’m sick. Hope you guys understand! :) (about 14 hours ago)

But P.S. Hi to everyone! And thanks for your get better messages!!! You guys are too nice haha :) (about 14 hours ago)

Feeling a little dehydrated but feeling waaay better! Been resting up a storm. Need to make sure I’m good for the next show! (32 minutes ago)

Poor David. Drink plenty of fluids! And eat some of your Abuelita’s fish soup. I know you hate it, but it’s good for you. Haha!

I don’t understand why it is ‘jarring’ go to from Adam to Kris.

IMO it seems jarring. YMMV. And I haven’t seen the show live yet, so maybe its fine. But even if Kris was on first, and there was no Adam, I still would prefer to see him in a smaller venue OR to have an arena-sized production.

I can’t ever recall seeing an arena show with back-to-back acts (no intermission) that went from such a big production to a “singer songwriter” type performance. So I would love an example.

The closest I can recall was in the early 80′s seeing Elvis Costello (power punk and a few emotional ballads) open for Van Morrison. But there was a 20 minute intermission and it was in a 2,000 seat venue. And it was jarring. For arena concerts, I can’t think of one similar case. The opening acts are almost always picked to compliment the headliner.

Most “10-act” concerts are either festivals or big all-star events. And although I’ve been to a number of both, usually they stack the acts to make the show flows. And most festival performances have a break when they set up the next act. Festivals rarely have back-to-back performance unless they are folk, blue-grass or other acoustic performances. Generally, it takes a good 15 minutes for a rock act to set up.

  • Anastasia72071

Yep, I love that too. It creates a roller coaster of a ride and afterwards you feel like you actually “went through” something rather than just “attended a concert” that was just one style – whether it’s flat-out rock or acoustic ballads, they’re both just a flat line, no variety. I also don’t mind at all when there are multiple acts with completely different styles. Having said that, getting a tiny bit of a breather in between, to sort your brain out is nice, lol.

One example off the top of my head of someone who mixes things up during a show: Chris Isaak. He’s got everything from super high-energy to country-flavoured to slow moody ballad. It totally works. Isaak also wears flashy outfits – Elvis-inspired rhinestone-encrusted tuxedo to a suit completely covered in mirrors. I saw him in Vancouver (Commodore Ballroom – the BEST place ever to see concerts of any sort, IMO) – he came out for the encore in the mirrored suit and they turned the spotlight on him; he was transformed into a human discoball. A-Mazing!

  • alaadam

Having gone to many, many concerts-I can see why it would be difficult for a “Kris Set” to follow an “Adam Set”. I love Adam’s style. I like music that gets me pumped up and excited. Once I get excited and the house is rocking, I do not want to “come down” off my high. I would want to leave the place on it. I like Kris but I would never go to a ‘concert” to see his type of entertaining.

    New Archie blog…

While I slept for most of the day yesterday, I did plop myself in the back lounge of the bus to watch the Michael Jackson Memorial. I was really touched by all the performances and the things that were said by his friends that spoke. It was a really emotional memorial. It really got me when his daughter spoke at the end, and my thoughts and prayers go out to them! I hope we can all keep them in our prayers, and give them the space and respect they deserve and need right now. Their dad went through a lot, but he did his best to keep his kids away from all that craziness because he cared about them and knew what it did to people. But despite all the things that Michael dealt with and everyone looking down on him, now that he’s gone it’s amazing to see how everyone has remembered all the things he’s done in his life that have influenced so many people. The way he’s reached out to sooo many that were in need and in poverty, and then in the way he touched people with his music. All I can say is thanks to him, not only for how inspiring he was to me basically throughout my entire life lol, but for his contributions to music and to the world.

Song for the day: Man in the Mirror – Michael Jackson
I know this song has been everywhere lately, but thank goodness it is! It is one of the greatest songs, with the most amazing message of starting with the person in the mirror. So take it to heart: If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change!

Um, that TVWeek article is NOT fact…it’s just the writer speculating on what COULD happen in the wake of Michael Jackson’s death.

exactly. went to Coachella this yr (going to ACL too, so excited)….and I was able to enjoy James Morrison, MIA, the Killers and Travis/DJAM….all very diff in their sets/moods……one yr I was lucky to see Beck perform at Coachella in a small tent (acoustic set) and then hop to the main stage to watch a rock band jam out….I didn’t feel any letdown or experience a jarring moment.

good music is good music, regardless if its soft/subtle or hard/in your face. IMO

thus peeps can enjoy an Adam set (w. rock music) and then sit back down for a softer (yet still rocking) Kris finale

  • girlygirl

And about the whole transition from Adam to Kris. I don’t know why it would be that jarring. When I go to concerts, most acts have both high energy songs and slower songs in their sets. Without that change of pace, everything starts to blend together. Kris seems to be doing just fine following Adam…although I repeat that he would be MUCH better off if he didn’t have to perform that lousy coronation song. Bright Lights in particular seems to be a big hit, from the comments I’ve seen on twitter and on youtube…and they are only 2 dates into this tour, so I would bet some kinks still be worked out in the production as a whole.

I would think that once Kris and Adam and Allison and whoever else all have their solo tours, they will have both high energy “rock” and calmer, quieter songs (even if not necessarily ballads) in their sets.

  • carolinacharms

Regarding the News Tribune review: HWGA. These writers need a better vocabulary when describing Lambert and Allen. But especially Allen.

And as for fashion, Kris looks like the farmer boy next door. I’ve seen many guys his age wearing these plaid concoctions, so I guess they’re in style now. Somebody told me that David Archuleta has like 50 of them. I love Allison’s look. Scott looks handsome. Matt seems to disappear in the photos, lol. Anoop looks…well…like Anoop. But where else would one wear such a thing? Adam’s outfit is the worst I’ve ever seen him wear. The jean jacket is way too short….and the color went out of style way back in the 90′s. Lil Rounds looks HOT!.

Glad he’s feeling better, he must have been really sick. I was also really touched by what he said about Michael and the respect he deserves.

IMO there is a difference between “Kris doing fine.” and my preferences for the best concert experience. But as I said above, I’ll reserve judgment until I see the show.

I would think that once Kris and Adam and Allison and whoever else all have their solo tours, they will have both high energy ‘rock’ and calmer, quieter songs (even if not necessarily ballads) in their sets.

Just to point out the obvious, Adam already has Mad World in his set. And Starlight isn’t exactly “ball-to-the-walls” rock either.

And Kris has variety in his set, too — ANS to Bright Lights.

Nice things about all except Megan and plus one “snarky” comment about Adam.

Conscious excessiveness? Really? How about high energy entertainment.

    FEH.

I know there was a reviewer at the Seattle Times that was pretty anti-Adam all season. I thought it was Bob Payne, but it might have been this writer. I don’t understand her comment at all but that’s ok. One slam at Adam in a sea of terrific reviews is fine. She’s entitled to her opinion.

    Here’s an a quote from her Adam review;

It’s not overstating the case to suggest that Lambert really does have the makings of a revivalist, glam-metal rock avatar.

Ha! In her subtle, ashamed to admit it-non-fangirly sort of way, the author called Adam a potential Rock God!!!!! (Avatar is the manifestation of a divine entity).

I totally agree with her on that.

Her slam in the end ( I didn’t quote it here) about predictability just shows that she isn’t a fan of Adam’s kind of music that’s all.

‘By the end of his set, though, Lambert’s shtick felt a bit too predictable in its conscious excessiveness.’

I guess that Adam fans can now jump off bridges!! LOL

Misha Berson is the Seattle Times Arts Critic and doesn’t usually review Rock concerts, but a huge Kris fan. Here’s an open letter to Adam fans writen after the Finale. Considering this, it is a surprising great review for Adam.

  • Valentin432

The very first reviewer who gives a lukewarm comment about Adam, I hope the Adam lovers will know better and let her in peace.

Other than that, I thought her whole article was very positive and she compared this year favorably to last year.

Q3, the Allison comment also struck me as particularly great praise:

Garbed in black leather and spandex, her copper-toned hair flying, Iraheta worked her brass lungs and blues chops to ace Janis Joplin’s “Cry”; she had the sass for Pink’s “So What”; and she ripped right into Heart’s “Barracuda.” With the right material of her own, Iraheta could be the Joan Jett or Chrissy Hynde of her generation.

suebrody ” haven’t been to the concert yet, but I wouldn’t call what Adam does ‘shtick’

    From the Seattle Times review:

Likable No. 10 contestant Michael Sarver opened with passable renditions of Gavin DeGraw’s country hit, “I Just Want a Girl” and (somewhat surprisingly) Ne-Yo’s “Closer.”

Gavin Degraw’s “I’m in Love with the Girl” is a country hit??? Way to pay attention.

How does one go about meeting Adam at the Vancouver show? I was just reading on another board about this woman whose father is gravely ill and just adores Adam (actually both of them do). The father/daughter talk about Adam all the time, and she says that Adam is really the spark that helps her dad. She was encouraged to write to Adam about her dad, and Adam sent back an autographed picture with a really nice message.

She is going to the show tonite and would love to meet Adam to tell him how thrilled her dad was to receive his autographed picture.

That might work if the kid who won Idol were doing any “gut wrenching ballads”, but he’s not. He’s doing some Kanye West hip hop song, a godawful coronation song that Kara Dioguardi copied from a thesaurus, a moth eaten Bill Withers oldie that’s been covered by every Holiday Inn lounge act since the beginng of time, a Maroon 5 pop tune (hardly gut wrenching), and a cliche, get your BIC lighters out, Beatles tune that McCartney has used as a closer since the first Wings tour 40 years ago.

Where’s the gut-wrenching ballad in all that? I can’t imagine a collection of songs with less gut-wrenching emotion. If anything, that set list would be perfect for ladies skate at the local roller rink, and we all know how gut-wrenching that is. It’s just a dude strumming a guitar and pounding out karaoke songs on a piano trying to follow “the glittery alien from planet fierce”.

Countless garage bands play “Whole Lotta Love” and Bowie tunes every day, everywhere.

And hey, isn’t the live show all about cover tunes? Some of them are stuff these guys chose for theme nights on the Idol show, for themes they did NOT get to choose.

Do you have to slam Kris to appreciate Adam? That seems ridiculous to me. No one should probably go to this show if they don’t want to hear anybody but Lambert.

That confuses me too. I know Kris had made an album for which he wrote most of the songs. But that album was not a success and he chose to go back to collage after that. I think maybe you don’t have to make a selling song to be credited as a song writer.

  • hwc

Considering this, it is a surprising great review for Adam.

Nothing like being scolded by the art critic at the Seattle Times. Maybe she could join Donny on stage at the next tour stop and do some preachin’ with him.

  • Mtlfan

ouch… I guess Kris wouldn’t be tooo happy about the kissing photoshot of him and Adam kissing.
eeeewww.. people shouldn’t do that, they are friends … not lovers!!!

..but i couldn’t not notice how Kris is so damn sexy ;)

  • CindyM

You know that picture will spread across every email in the universe. And just like the ‘my boss woke up in his hotel room minus a kidney’ story it will be filed under ‘internet legend’ in file 13 (the trash) just as fast.

Yeah, I wish it hadn’t been posted here. We understand it’s a manip, but like all these other “telephone games” that have gone on, it will soon be a true picture and someone will have the insider scoop on all the juicy details, lol.

  • Tess

Yea…wouldn’t the best way to describe Kris be: the guitar strummer guy who manipulates proven songs to fit his voice and his instrumental ability….and we’ll describe Adam as: the high pitched wailer who picks proven songs to show of his range and his sexy body moves.

And I won’t pick on Danny this time ’cause I’m in a good mood today.

  • GeminiDolly

    That photo creeps me out.

I think singer/songwriter is an easy way to refer to musicians who appear to have a style similar to Kris’.

However, he DID write the songs on his pre-Idol album Brand New Shoes (some of which are pretty good, IMO) and he IS writing or co-writing most, if not all, of the material for his debut album.

So technically, that would make him an aspiring singer/songwriter, at worst.

Anyway, speaking of Kris, here’s his latest tweet:

I am afraid to even ask about the fanfic sites this year…..it was horrifying last year. What was more hilarious is that the Idols knew about this stuff and Cook and Johns were hamming up for the fans just to feed those little fanfic fantasies……bwah. Imagine fanfic that included little David A. And if you google blog your favourite male Idols it is hard to avoid seeing bits and pieces of it.

I am guessing that he will laugh it off, like everything else.

I can’t help remembering the recent interview where Kris says – “I have a mancrush on Adam, can I say that?” – Adam – “Oh, they will run with that” Kris “Ok, I’m screwed”

    And voila!!

Why is it only Kris might be unhappy?? In all the interviews I’ve seen, Kris is the more physically affectionate person in that friendship. Since he said in the TV guide interview, he also had a crush, maybe he’d be okay with it and Adam would be upset since he’s said he’s dating someone else. Ya never know.

  • lavender1960

He can send it to me,….spend it all and stimulate the BC economy?

There is one more concert in Canada, he can save it for Hamilton, ON.

  • Tess

Not to worry…US immigration lets you bring in $10,000. I don’t think Kris is going to be spending that much today.

  • CindyM

However, he DID write the songs on his pre-Idol album Brand New Shoes (some of which are pretty good, IMO) and he IS writing or co-writing most, if not all, of the material for his debut album.

I didn’t realizing he was writing his own songs for the debut. Is there an article about that somewhere? I’ve only heard about the co-writes, the same as Adam’s album. It would be cool if he did get to write his own material, I don’t think that happens with many AI debut albums.

When I traveled to Vancouver 2 years ago, they already took US dollar at par even. I think the dollar is weaker now than 2 yrs ago.

  • CindyM

I would never consider Madonna OTT though. She is like Goldilocks – she seems to get it just right, most of the time. That is why she’s the Queen of Pop.

Theatrical doesn’t not necessarily mean OTT.

I think Madonna is OTT and that makes me want to see her live even though I don’t think she sings that well in person. Her outfits are deinitely OTT, I loved her Jean Paul Gautier outfits back in the day.

  • girlygirl

    CindyM

I should clarify. Kris has said he is writing stuff for his album. It isn’t entirely clear whether any of the songs are being written wholly by himself or whether they will all be co-written with the collaborators we have heard he has been working with.

  • Kirsten

Is there any rules about how money Canadian currency who can bring back into the U.S.?

No, you are not allowed to remove any Canadian currency from the country. The boarder guards are very strict about this. The best he can hope to do is use it to buy Maple Syrup and beaver pelts at the duty free shop. He may be able to trade that for real currency when he escapes back across the boarder into the US.

Just got change in Canadian money. What am I supposed to do with this?#

Just throw it away. It’s not worth the room in your wallet. It’s like that funky ‘tourist money’ you used to get as change in the tourist-only stores in China during the 80s. It’s not legal tender anywhere.

Top 10 Things to Do With Canadian Money
    —————————————

    10. Use it to replace the missing money in your Monopoly game

    9. Burn it to keep warm on a cold Canadian summer day.

    8. Annoy buskers in the States by tossing it into their tip jar. Especially if they are mimes.

    7. Use it to buy yourself some mukluks. You’ll need them.

    6. Use the coins as weights when ice fishing. Buy an axe first.

    5. Plug up American vending machines. Especially ones in which your bag of chips got stuck.

    4. Smuggle it out of the country and amaze your friends with all the pretty colours.

    3. Give it to Adam. He can add the coins to the sparkly stuff he already has on his finale outfit.

    2. Make oragami unicorns out of the bills. Sell them on eBay.

    1. Buy a new plaid shirt. Canadians are all lumberjacks so we have a nice selection.

All this kradam fluff will never end huh?

  • Mtlfan

@spring2009: I agree with you.. Kris (and Adam) will laugh at it but I still think Kris would really prefer to not have this kind of photoshot roaming the web.

  • Mtlfan

Really flattering for Kris the critics in the Seattle Times:

Even in a venue that might easily dwarf his more intimate musical approach, Allen rocked the hall with his passionate, “Idol”-winning take on Kanye West’s “Heartless,” wisely expanded live to include the show’s excellent backup band. (Special props to Tim Stewart, a guitarist who can sound like Jimmy Page one minute, Santana the next.)

Yes, he had to perform that tuneless “No Boundaries” ode ‘” another icky “Idol” coronation number.

But he survived that. And he demonstrated a musical creativity and versatility unique among his “Idol” peers, by singing a magnetic “Ain’t No Sunshine” at the piano, strapping on an electric guitar for a lively romp through Matchbox Twenty’s “Bright Lights,” and closing with a brilliant singalong choice: “Hey Jude.”

Kris is a ‘natural’ and it really shows. Can’t agree more with what is written in the last paragraph

  • cookcricket

They made a lot of small but important adjustments to Kris set for the second show. For example, I like the Seattle Hey Jude a lot better than the Portland version ‘” it’s more animated. My guess it that Kris will keep working on these performances and getting better.

I agree here. Even though I’m a Kris fan and believe he can hold his own right now, I think he’ll just keep getting better esp. by following Adam. I remember my husband saying, growing up, that he loved playing basketball with the star player down the street because every time he did he got better himself.

It’s getting to be a bit much. Lol.

What’s funny is that it seems to mostly be a product of Adam’s fans. I don’t know any Kris fans who even remotely like Adam. By contrast I know many Allison fans who like Adam but ‘Adison’ didn’t catch on to the same degree as Kradam.

  • girlygirl

    Natasha:

There are tons of Kris fans who love Adam…if you go on the Kradam thread on the IDF forum, the thread is over 600 pages long and has more than 600,000 views! The comments are pretty evenly spread among those who say they are Adam fans first and between those who claim to be Kris fans first.

And ontd_ai has a whole separate section devoted to kradam! It’s definitely a phenom right now. It’ll probably die out (or die down) once the guys go their separate ways after this tour.

Meanwhile, over on IDF, they are saying there is a photo spread on Adam, Kris and Allison in the current issue of US Weekly Magazine. Hopefully MJ or someone can find a link to the spread and post it (I went on the US Weekly website, but didn’t see it).

  • Mom in the Suburbs

About the Seattle Times review from Ms. Bertan, I don’t have a problem with her piece when read in its entirety. She makes clear Kris is her preference BUT she also is able to recognize Adam’s talent. She doesn’t just write him off as so many do with double-speak, which is how I read anyone who talks about the showy ott performance, diva style, etc. When people label Adam as too Broadway (this was pointed out by more than one Idol reviewer), they really mean he’s too “gay.” At least she objectively recognizes his vocal ability.

  • Kirsten

ROFLMAO – you forgot about the igloos!

I’m very sure that the Idols have been warned not to post twitter pics of their hotel/igloo. Each igloo designer has a distinctive style and the Canadians would know instantly which one they are staying at and we all know that you can’t lock an igloo. You can block the door with ice and snow, but a determined fan will just dig through a wall.

As a Canadian, i found your jokes pretty funny about our money.

Psst…I’m one of you. The proud, the free, the freezing.

    Mtl=Montreal?

  • CindyM

Yeah, I think there are equal part Adam/Kris fans that encourage the Kradam. IDF and Ontd:ai are full of threads by both fan groups encouraging it.

I agree. I thought it was a positive review for Adam overall. She recognized that as far as the audience was concerned, Adam was the star of the show. I think she prefers Kris’ style to Adam’s but that’s her opinion which she’s entitled to.

I agree with aspiring singer-songwriter. Here’s the WIki definition of singer-songwriter and I think that describes Kris really well — except he need to compose his own material.

Singer’“songwriter is a term that refers to musicians who write, compose and sing their own material including lyrics and melodies. They often provide the sole accompaniment to an entire composition or song, typically using a guitar or piano.

But for a more specific and traditional classification, I’d say Kris is clearly in the AC space. I’d say Kris’ genres are pop rock, folk rock, and acoustic rock.

He reminds me a lot of James Morrison (pop rock, soft rock) and some of Jason Mraz’ pop rock music. And Matchbox 20′s pop rock songs.

  • girlygirl

I was really happy to see the Seattle Times reviewer give Kris some love. Didn’t know she was a Kris fan from the show. And even though she criticized Adam’s mannerisms at least she recognized his talent and his potential to become a star. I do see a little of what she was talking about. I was watching the Youtube of “Starlight” and at one point I did think to myself that the gestures were getting a little mannered or theatrical at one point. But I still loved the overall performance. That’s just Adam, and I wouldn’t want him to change up his style too much any more than I’d want Kris to change up his style too much. Stick with what they love and with what works for them, (maybe just refine it a little bit as they get more experience performing live in front of big crowds).

I’m also happy that the other 8 people on this tour are getting at least some attention/mention in the reviews and articles. Before tour started, the majority of the media attention was on Adam and/or Kris. So it’s nice to see the others get singled out a bit as well.

  • Q3

Well I think it would have been really funny if the Times” theater critic criticized Adam for being too “theatrical”. But she actually wrote “Lambert’s shtick felt a bit too predictable in its conscious excessiveness” and that is just laughable.

There are a lot of definitions of the Yiddish word shtick, but in the theater world it means “incidental activity performed by an actor for dramatic effect”. And I don’t think that is an apt description of Adam’s Bowie medly which IMO was not filled with incidential activity.

I didn’t take the OregonLive review seriously because the guy had a bias, and I similarly can’t take Misha Berson since she also has a bias.

  • colette

Y’know, look at the youtube clips from Tacoma, and it’s clear that the audience went for Kris as well as Adam.

Were people more into Adam? If so, fine. Great. Adam is a terrific performer.

But it’s. not a contest anymore. and the notion that Kris was completely and totally outshone doesn’t bear out from what I’ve seen and read…

Re: Vancouver. So the money is different in Canada (Toonie anyone?) but do you think the fans/response will be different? I don’t mean in a big way different, but in subtle ways that mark the difference in the two cultures. (Or am I over-thinking this… yeah probably :)

EDIT Toonie = two dollar coin

  • Mom in the Suburbs

In fandom there’s nothing more popular than slash (which in fan world means gay love). I had NO idea fanfic even existed until a few years ago when I became a huge Lord of the Rings fan. I’ve always been a casual Idol fan, but this is the first year I’ve become invested (blame it on the Fierce One). I was astonished to find out that slash was part of this fandom too, lol. It doesn’t bother me, but it’s never been my cuppa either. I love that Adam is out and proud and Kris is happily married, so I guess fans can enjoy their harmless fantasies in whatever way. I am entertained by their friendship though, and the “bromances are in” vid is hysterical. You may have a good point as to how they became the two most popular.

  • richie10

I find it very embarrassing that this girl Jess gave Adam and Kris a manip of them hugging each other. What’s next? A picture of them having sex. This Kradam thing has gone too far when you actually take a photo to them to get their reaction. I’m sure they were nice enough about it to her face but I doubt they really appreciated it. Ugh!! I’ll be glad when Adam can get out on his own away from the idol group and all it’s silliness.

  • girlygirl

That girl Jess actually runs the lambert-pics website. Adam evidently went on that site and told her that he thinks it’s really well done.

And like pretty much all those Idol winners/runner-ups who have come before him, I wouldn’t count on Adam ever getting totally away from the Idol tag or its fans. That label seems to stick no matter what (see Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, David Cook, etc. etc. etc.)

You ain’t seen nothing yet if you are embarrassed about this one. There are 50 more shows and thousand of irrational fans, each of whom somehow looses all touch with reality and common decency and courtesy when it comes to Idol-dom. We get to see tons of body parts offered for autographs, and scrapbooks, and flat Adams and Kris and Dannys.

And just like this young lady there will be fans that go to every show within 500 miles of their home and somehow weasel their way into every meet and greet and after show signing. You will know them not only by their internet sign-in, but by their actual name and occupation.

    Brace yourself!

Hey Hey now Hamilton is not that bad, it’s a better venue than Air Canada Centre in Toronto, In my Humble Opinion, Copps just is just a bit less cavernous so the acoustics are better…….there is a cool area called Hess Village just down the road from Copps Coliseum, great bars and pubs and restaurants…get some good Alexander Keith’s ale eh? The coins are pretty and hey the Americans are introducing some colour gradually into the greenbacks. See with different coloured bills, easier to to decipher the bills when you’ve had too much ale eh?

Now I found the crowd a bit subdued in Toronto at the Idol concert last year, they were very loud but only the floor seats were really standing up for most of the concert, but I would blame the Idol crowd, I mean I had a grandmother who could barely walk, with a cane sitting in front of us, so no surprise she wasn’t jumping up and down and dancing, a Dad with his kids besides us, and the girl was excited and the boy was I want to go home, is this over yet, but then there were 2 little boys a few rows up who were wild for David Cook, so adorable, and dancing the whole concert.

But even David Cook seemed a bit pissed off that not everyone was up standing and dancing – we in the stands and my friend was just standing up BEFORE the show even started and someone told her to sit down and we were like wow this is going to one sad ass section – we are used to going to concerts in many places in Ontario where no one sits down for the whole concert – dance dance dance – they were older folks who were grumps, they only came to life for Jason Castro, and then back to grumps after he was finished, though come to think of it my sister and I were told to sit down during Janet Jackson at the same venue, how can you sit to JJ…..I think the Vancouver crowds are more spirited overall

That Seattle times clip is adorable, they are all so cute! Especially Matt and Danny, I love those guys together. Lil was making me smile too, she seems like she would be a lot of fun to be around. And Kris giving fashion advice about the shoes, you gotta love that!

Oh and btw the way thanks for the heads up on Ryan Adams. My husband brought several copies of his cds home from the library the other night to check him out.

Hope you enjoy him. Check out his Heartbreaker album. I think he’s a heck of a songwriter, as do people like Elton John and Bob Dylan. I’ve been fortunate enough to see Ryan Adams and the Cardinals twice in the last year. Terrific stuff. Soundboard recordings of almost all of his concerts are available free at the Internet Archive. The band’s sound engineers let tapers patch directly into the soundboard mix and a legion of fans upload these shows from the US, the UK, and Australia. Here’s a really nice acoustic show from Boston two years ago:

You can play the MP3 of the show directly from that site, or download high quality VBR MP3s from a link on the left side of the page.

Here’s a really good electric show from this spring’s tour:

OK, on behalf of my late bubbe (that’s grandma in Yiddish), I gotta weigh in on this “shtick” discussion.

Yiddish expressions often have multiple meanings. In the Urban Dictionary, shtick has at least 7 meanings, including somebody’s signature style, their stage routine, something that helps define what they do, or (pejoratively) their favorite gimmicks.

So please, let’s not attach some kind of definitive meaning to this word that suggests the wrong usage.

Or there’s this example from Merriam-Webster Dictionary if you prefer:

shtik: one’s special trait, interest, or activity : their bag, as in: “he’s alive and well and now doing his shtick out in Hollywood…”
