Don’t stop believing: 10 Idols get ready to roll to 50 cities

All season, American Idol finalists sang shortened songs in front of a few hundred people, and millions more watched on TV. When their 50-city Idols Live tour starts Sunday at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore., they’ll expand the songs and the crowd, without worries about who goes home at the end of the night.

“I didn’t know how you’d fit 10 people in one show, but it flows so smoothly,” says Danny Gokey. “And the energy of 10,000 to 15,000 people will take it up a notch.”

The three-hour concert will be split between songs from the Fox series and material picked for the tour.
A four-song medley will spotlight Michael Sarver, Lil Rounds, Megan Joy, Matt Giraud, Scott MacIntyre and Anoop Desai. “There are some duets in it, there’s a group number, there are a couple of solo spots, but each of those Idols is featured,” says tour producer/director Raj Kapoor.

Also planned: a group performance of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing.

The set boasts a 42-by-18-foot video-screen backdrop, as well as four smaller screens, each receiving separate signals. “We’ve created custom videos for each one of them,” Kapoor says. “Whichever Idol you like, you get to see them in their own light, with their own vibe.”

Paula Abdul Will Drop In On Drop Dead Diva

Paula Abdul will show off her acting chops in a guest role on Lifetime’s new original series Drop Dead Diva.

‘I am very excited to guest star on Drop Dead Diva,’ Abdul says. ‘All of the people are extremely talented and it’s a charming, wonderfully written new show.’

Broadway star Brooke Elliott plays the sassy lawyer lead in the dramedy about a shallow model who, after death, finds her soul inside the body of a smart plus-sized attorney named Jane.

In a September episode, Jane will go before Judge Nina Hodge, played by Abdul, in a case about a store that refuses to carry plus-sized clothing.

American Idol finalists get ready to hit the road

BURBANK, Calif. ‘” Face to face at twin pianos, Matt Giraud and Scott MacIntyre strike the opening chords of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and playing in unison the two “American Idol” finalists start to sing the Journey classic.

They trade lines about small town girls and city boys, and as the song unfolds the rest of this year’s Top 10 Idols join in more or less in reverse order of their finish.

Michael Sarver and Megan Joy trade verses, then Lil Rounds, Anoop Desai, Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey take their turns.

Your shot at ‘Idol’

It seems like the Adam Lambert vs. Kris Allen competition has barely died down, but “American Idol” producers have already hit the road looking for contestants for Season 9.

This year’s Orlando auditions are July 9 at Amway Arena downtown, but you will need to arrive a day or two early. Participants must go to the arena on Tuesday or Wednesday, beginning at 7 a.m., to register for an audition spot. You will need to bring two pieces of ID and, if you are under 18, you will have to have a parent or guardian with you.

‘Idol’ puts up bigger numbers now that he’s a Billboard-topping rock star

Two of his four bandmates were with him in Oklahoma obscurity. A few of their current songs are ones they did back then.

“I always imagined them like this, with a crowd singing along,” Cook said by phone. “It just wasn’t the same when there were only eight people listening.”

Now it’s 8,000-plus. It’s been like that since Cook – who headlines the Common Ground festival Friday – became the 2008 “American Idol” champion.

Suddenly, the former Tulsa bartender was writing with Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls), Zak Maloy (Nixons) and his favorite, Raine Maila (Our Lady Peace). “Our first writing session, we did three songs in four hours,” Cook said.

Admit it: You are (I am?) excited about the new Blake Lewis CD!

This just in: American Idol’s season 6 runner-up, Blake Lewis, will drop his sophomore set, Heartbreak on Vinyl, on October 6th via Tommy Boy Entertainment. Also breaking: My voice, because despite my best efforts to suppress it, I let out a schoolgirl-like squeal when said record-release news landed in my inbox.

Yeah, I know, music hipsters would probably prefer to dismiss Lewis as a beatboxing Idol annoyance/the only person other than Jordin Sparks to sing “This Is My Now” to a TV audience of 25 million people. But I say the guy should not be dismissed so easily. Listen to “End of the World” (embedded below), an album cut from his debut Audio Day Dream (which sold 308,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and tell me that soaring chorus shouldn’t have gone directly to the upper quadrants of Billboard’s Hot 100 without passing ‘Go’ and without collecting $200.

B-side: Jordin Sparks hits the dancefloor

With much of the country sweltering under record temperatures, most of us can’t wait to hit the park, the beach or the garden to make the most of the glorious sunshine. Of course, no alfresco frolics are complete without a suitable soundtrack, which is where DS’s B-side of the week comes in handy.

Having remixed singles for Girls Aloud, Britney Spears and Pixie Lott in recent months, UK dance producers Bimbo Jones have now worked their magic on Jordin Sparks’s triumphant new single ‘Battlefield’. Dragging this soft rock monster onto the dancefloor with some throbbing beats and trancey synths, they’ve transformed it into a summer anthem almost as scorching as the midday sun.

Idol winner Sparks’ whirlwind continues with Jonas tour

Pop/R&B star Jordin Sparks doesn’t want to wait for the inevitable.

As the opening act for the Jonas Brothers on their latest tour, she knows it’s only a matter of time before tabloids and bloggers start linking her to one of the siblings.

So Sparks, 19, is willing to make a pre-emptive strike. “We can start the rumour that I’m already dating Nick,” she laughs.

“We could have so much fun messing with people — it would be so awesome. I don’t know if I’m quite prepared for Jonas mania, but I think I’ll be OK.”

After all, she sparked her own following of rabid fans — the Arizona native won the sixth season of TV’s most popular reality show, American Idol, in 2007.

Taylor Hicks stars in Broadway production of Grease

He is surprisingly shy. It comes through the long distance phone wires in his hesitant speaking style and his long pauses.

Taylor Hicks may have been “American Idol, Year Five,” but he is surely not arrogant or self-important.

The “country boy” with the hefty voice will be landing on stage in Philadelphia in the iconic musical “Grease,” from July 7 to July 19, as part of the national tour, after debuting on Broadway in the role of Teen Angel.

“It’s wonderful – I love the show, I love the role, but I can’t say that I love the travel,” said Hicks, whose life changed drastically when he swept the “American Idol” title. “I certainly understand why Susan Boyle felt totally overwhelmed from the experience. That’s what it is – overwhelming.”

Analysis: Jackson Frenzy Drowns Out Competition

Sales of Michael Jackson’s catalog drowned out the competition in the week after his death. Consumers flocked last week to online retailers such as iTunes and Amazon.com to purchase Jackson’s catalog but the flurry of activity did not help other artists.

Total album sales dropped 8% versus the previous week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. New releases dropped 17% while catalog albums rose 3% and deep catalog increased 8%. A week-to-week change in the -10% range is not unusual, and the week did not have any blockbuster debuts.

Even so, the performance of the country’s top albums is clear evidence that Michael Jackson’s death had a negative impact on the rest of the market.

Except for debuts, no album in the previous weeks’ top 100 gained over the previous week. Of the top 200 albums, 149 had double-digit declines, 159 were in negative territory, two were flat and nine sold more units that in the previous week. There were 27 debuts that week.

Michael Jackson’s Estate: Saved by the Beatles

Will Michael Jacksons’ three children, Michael Joseph Jr., Paris Michael and Prince Michael II, end up paupers? The answer rests on the value of the performer’s largest asset: his 50% stake of a music publishing company called Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

Jackson, who died on June 25, left behind as much as $500 million of debts. That includes a $315 million loan owed to British bank Barclays, as well as millions of dollars of bills. “Jackson never paid his bills,” says a lawyer who did work for Jackson over the years. “Countless professionals who worked for him are still waiting to get paid.” In May, the singer’s long-time publicist Raymone Bain sued Jackson for $44 million in unpaid fees.

‘Endless’ Music In Michael Jackson’s Vault

NEW YORK ‘” Michael Jackson had a mountain of unreleased recordings in the vault when he died _ music that is almost certain to be packaged and repackaged for his fans in the years to come.

The material includes unused tracks from studio sessions of some of Jackson’s best albums, as well as more recently recorded songs made with Senegalese R&B singer and producer Akon and Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am.

“There are dozens and dozens of songs that did not end up on his albums,” said Tommy Mottola, who from 1998 to 2003 was chairman and CEO of Sony Music, which owns the distribution rights to Jackson’s music. “People will be hearing a lot of that unreleased material for the first time ever. There’s just some genius and brilliance in there.”

The releases, Mottola said, “could go on for years and years _ even more than Elvis.”

Karaoke Kate Moss’s a hit with Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell is not famous for his unbridled praise of amateur singers, but he was clearly taken with his latest protge last night – a 35-yearold mother of one from Croydon. The X Factor judge was on his feet and cheering after listening to an enthusiastic rendition of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean.

Perhaps it was because the song was a tribute to the late entertainer. More likely, however, was that the amateur singer in question was Kate Moss.

Exhausted Cowell may dump one TV show

Big bucks may not be the deciding factor in Simon Cowell’s ‘American Idol’ contract negotiations. Shortly after reports surfaced claiming Cowell could command as much as $144 million if he agreed to continue his ruthless judging routine, ex-girlfriend and current best friend Terri Seymour said the famed workaholic needs a break.

In an interview with the Daily Star, Seymour claimed an exhausted Cowell can’t go on juggling three high-profile talent competitions. Between his work on ‘American Idol’ and U.K. shows ‘X Factor’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent,’ one show has to go.

Ratings: Another Cowell Hit Brewing?

Summer television may finally have a hit; and Simon Cowell has a hand in this one, too.

NBC’s talent competition, ‘America’s Got Talent,’ got stronger in its second week on the air this summer, leading the network ratingson Tuesday night with almost 13 million viewers. That is the biggest audience for anything on television ‘“- other than sports ’“ this summer.

‘AGT,’ as it is known, also attracted a 3.7 rating among the advertiser preferred group of viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, the best number for any network show this summer.

NBC’s ‘America’s Got Talent’ surges

After weeks of summer reality shows steadily dropping in the ratings, NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” pulled off a surprising reversal Tuesday night.

The second week of NBC’s competition series surged in the Nielsens and was watched by more viewers than any non-sports program so far this summer (on broadcast or cable).

“Got Talent” earned 12.9 million viewers and a 3.7 preliminary adults 18-49 rating, up 16% from its premiere.

One reason for the rise may have been the show’s lead-in, a “Got Talent” repeat (8.2 million, 2.3) that drew far more viewers than “I’m a Celebrity” brought to the time period in recent weeks. Or since the premiere was the lowest “Talent” opener ever, the gain could simply be due to some fans returning late to the show.

Katie Holmes to Show Her Dance Moves on TV!

Holmes has teamed up with “So You Think You Can Dance” co-creator Nigel Lythgoe, “Dancing with the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba and director and choreographer Adam Shankman to create the Dizzy Feet Foundation.

“So You Think You Can Dance”: Chains, aliens and ballet shoes

Caitlinjason This has been the episode of “So You Think You Can Dance” that I’ve been waiting for all season. While I liked some performances more than others, I really enjoyed parts of every dance, which means I’m growing closer to the contestants, which means eliminations will be more difficult, which means the dancers are going to have to step it up more and the show can only get better. Thank goodness.

I knew it would be a good episode with Mia Michaels sitting on the judges’ panel. Cat Deeley (wearing a fun, flirty fuchsia dress with a black studded belt) asked Mia if she had anything to say since the last time she was on the show, and Mia rubbed her hands in anticipation and said, “Without naming names, my opinion has changed for the better.” She was obviously talking about Brandon Bryant, who she took to task last time she was on the show for his “attitude,” but Nigel Lythgoe egged her on by saying, “Would this be for a small male dancer? Were the initials Brandon?”

    Very sweet of Kris.

  • Mary102

Kris also commented that he’ll be watching the rest of the show from the wings – which I loved! I can so see him standing by to cheer everyone on!

  • tinawina

I kinda want to go just to see Kradison, but I can’t imagine sitting through everyone else. Well, maybe Matt. And Anoop. I’m even a little curious about Megan. And Lil might not be too bad. So maybe I do want to go after all. LOL.

I would love to be a fly on the wall backstage during this tour. This group seemed so wide eyed and naive, talking like they really believed they were all going to get record deals and be famous. When reality sets in that only 3 of them (possibly 4) have deals, I wonder how that will change things? Especially since those 3 are pretty tight among themselves. Hmmm….

Except for Matt, that four song medley by the bottom 5 could not be less appealing…I’d like a four song medley by the top 4, and yes, I’m very greedy that way. I don’t understand why Matt couldn’t be with the top 4 (so, a top 5). Did this happen in past years?

As much as I hate to say it, I do think Adam’s Want is catchy. I wish it had been finished…it did get 6,000 downloads, not bad for a song without a show or airplay (but obviously Adam fans knew it and grabbed it ;-) ).

This will probably end the first half. As far as I remember, the show usually has 5-10 in the first half, and the top 4 in the second half, so this sounds pretty typical. The top have more songs, so it works out well.

The elim order makes me think back to some earlier comments about how if they did it in pure elim order, a lot of people won’t show up till the second half, and now I have to wonder about that.

Then again, I’ve always had one of the top guys as my fav, and I always go to the whole thing, and enjoy everyone, even the one’s I wasn’t fond of during the show. I figure I’m paying the money for it all, and it is still fun to hear them live.

I’m also wondering about Anoop’s earlier dancing comments, since most of the shows I’ve seen didn’t really incorporate much dancing, and there’s not room for much on the rather crowded, small stage they have for it. And yeah, most of the “dancing” these guys did on idol was pretty bad (except Adam – I remember him being a pretty decent dancer, maybe Matt too, iirc).

    From USA:

What is Allen looking forward to seeing? Allison Iraheta’s set. “Anytime she sings, I watch. She pulls me in.”

Two of the songs in Allison’s set, Barracuda and Cry Baby, are awesome, dynamic and complex. The Heart song? Guaranteed to be demanding, as well, whatever it is. They best be done right, or not done at all. Slow Ride, a treat, we know. Alli’s stunning vocals coupled with her riveting performances should launch the rest of the show into orbit. But, I’m saying nothing that you don’t already know. Just anticipating!

I understand why Kris watches when she sings. In the hallowed words of Chauncey Gardner: I like to watch.

We got a leak of the Top 50 downloads/plus a few extras and I thought it was interesting that this week that Michael Jackson and Co managed to certify the following digital versions of his songs:

Billie Jean – Platinum (Total: 1,084,127, TW: 158,493)
Way You Make Me Feel – Gold (Total: 538,464, TW: 136,330)
P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing): Gold (Total: 563,142, TW: 105,801)
I Want You Back (Jackson 5): Gold (Total: 562,363, TW: 64,186)
ABC (Jackson 5): Gold (Total: 556,574, TW: 60,020)

Now, it is possible that these had been previously certified under the old (pre-mid-2006) digital certifications (100K for Gold and 200K for platinum).

Seems like I remember Anoop messing up on something during it, but overall I thought he did a decent job, given his exrememely long, lean self.

Aside from the Disco Week one, the group numbers during the show were pretty badly staged, not to mention the lip-synching. It’s hard to get a feel on who can and can’t really dance. They hired a choreographer for the tour who has worked with Beyonce (among others), so I would think the staging will be a lot better. Not to mention, they can’t lip synch!

They all seem to like to dance — if it’s a little goofy, that’s ok. As long as it isn’t a train wreck.

A new article but taken place before Danny went to the meetings obviously. Is it me that I think Danny should have kept the meetings quiet. What happened to being quiet about things until something happens because things can always change. Also, Sarver talking about writing 900 songs and wanting to get to 1000 is kinda silly. Maybe he should just hone in on some songs since it’s about quality rather than quantity.

Anyways, I think I’m more anxious than some of the idols because I want Matt and Anoop to become more pro-active in getting a deal. haha

I posted some of this at the end of yesterday’s headline thread – sorry for the repost, but more stuff has been added to it, and more will come later.

This site has a different approach to interviewing pairs of idols – they asked them to answer questions about each other. It’s pretty fun.

    Here’s Matt/Anoop from yesterday:

Lil and Scott were added today:

And, the rest of them will be added as the week goes on —

    Kris/Allison

It’s the same interview pairing we’ve seen for the other interviews on their big press day.

Maybe I’m biased, but I found in that number Adam acted kinda like a lead dancer, not that he had more front time, but many times he led the group from one side of the stage to the other side and signaled the change of move sets.

Also in the finale Santana song and “If You Want My Body” Adam surely showed us that he can swing. :happy_tb:

Several people mentioned that Adam was a quick study. He can learn lines, dance moves, take direction, very effortlessly. I guess it also helps to be a natural dancer too. I’ve watched the disco number many times, and Adam looks like a pro (not that the number was that difficult).

  • girlygirl

Is it me, or do some of these kids talk like they just expect a deal to fall into their laps? It doesn’t happen that way (well, not if you don’t finish in the Top 2, anyway). I saw an article that talked about how Idol contestants really only have about 11 months from the time the show ends to capitalize on the exposure they received. After that, the next crop of AI contestants comes along, and those from previous years can get pushed aside. Look at the contestants from the previous seasons — only a handful of them have ANY kind of current record deal, let alone one with a major label.

I realize Kris, Adam and Allison are already signed, so have backing, but they are all showing serious dedication by working so hard on their albums. Those 3 obviously have the drive and determination to try and make it in the business. I’m not sure if some of these others have that same makeup, or whether they are just happy coasting on their 15 minutes of fame and leaving their future up to “fate”.

Since it seems that Danny was idiotic enough to release the information that he was in Nashville for “possible” recording deals he is going to have to live with the “results” whether positive or negative. I googled recording companies in Nashville and the result was interesting. Basically, companies doing “country” or companies doing “christian”. Don’t think I could identify one that recorded “r&b soul with a little latin flavor” but then I may be wrong.

I will say that Danny has a very nice natural singing voice. But, I don’t think I would pay money to buy an album of his when there are other artists with the same type of voice who are well-trained and artistically much better in my opinion.

Well, we’ll see how this little saga all turns out. If he signs with a Christian or Country label I think he is selling out based on what he told us earlier about what he wanted to record. Also, I don’t think the “country” market will embrace him, IMHO but then, what do I know. The country fans embraced Carrie, have welcomed Kellie, and Bucky seems to be selling enough to record another album.

  • lucy

What I don’t understand is why all of a sudden he is going country.

Because he’s always dreamed of being the engineer for a massive train wreck?

On the other hand, he keeps saying that before the show he wasn’t at all familiar with *any* popular music genres, so I suppose he has to start learning somewhere. Why not country?

  • BeckyMD

Funny interview with the group, taken at the same time as those we already known, it’s when they rehearsal DSB. Nothing is really new. But you’ll find out who inspired Alli and Kris to get up everyday and be a better person, and how Adam and Megan stretch out and ‘drop it’.

    http://www.younghollywood.com/videos/filmtv/behind-the-scenes/american-idol-finalists-unplugged.html

ETA: Can anyone please tell me what they meant by ‘drop it’ in this circumstance?

  • BestAI

‘What I don’t understand is why all of a sudden he is going country.’

This may be the only deal he can get. I mean, who else would want him?

I forgot to mention that he said in an interview he never heard of “The Grand Ol Opry”. I’m sure the country music industry will really embrace him. (Picture me with one of Adam’s snarky facial expressions.)

  • aek

He’d better get a record deal after all his talk about it interviews and twitter. I guess he wants to make sure EVERYONE knows about it. What I don’t understand is why all of a sudden he is going country.

Well, he sang more country songs than anyone else on the show, I’m pretty sure.

He sang “I hope you dance”, “What Hurts the Most”, “Jesus Take the Wheel”, and will be singing “My WIsh” on tour. He also sang “Endless Love”, which has been covered by the country artist Kenny Rogers.

I do think that he really likes that style of inspirational ballady country, and I think he does well with it.

This may be the only deal he can get. I mean, who else would want him?

This is such a negative way of looking at it. Yes, in a sense, it may be the only deal he can get. Well, actually, I’m sure that he could get a gospel deal.

But with that said, the people at the record company obviously have seen what he did on the show. They listened to the country that he sang and thought that he could succeed in this area. It’s not like they have to negotiate a deal with him, which has to be done with a winner or runner up. They are choosing to meet with him about this.

Danny had a less defined style than some of he others because it wasn’t like he was singing in a band or on any kind of stage experience except church before he went on idol. In a sense Idol gave him an opportunity to experiment with different genres of popular music and for record execs see him doing different types of popular music. IF he gets the deal, it will be because he deserves, just like the other three who have deals.

If given the right songs and promotion, I believe Danny will do well.
Imo the boy can just flat out sing, and he sings with alot of emotion and passion which is well suited to the types of country that he sang on the show and on tour.

We shall see what happens, but for me he was the second best on the show, and he did this with a heck of a lot less experience than Adam (my number one). I think he deserves a shot.

  • Kirsten

Maybe I’m biased, but I found in that number Adam acted kinda like a lead dancer, not that he had more front time, but many times he led the group from one side of the stage to the other side and signaled the change of move sets.

Could be. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he was the only one (especially amongst the Top 7) who had ever had to learn coreography in a professional environment before.

Most of the other contestants are just interested in a singing career and watching them try to dance is just part of the cheesy fun of this show.

Of course, now that I’m thinking about it, I’m having visions of a disco dance routine featuring Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Janis Joplin with Celine Dionne leading the moves. Hee! (Disclaimer, just random singers that popped into my head. I’m in no way claiming that any of the Idols are Bob Dylan or the others).

I wonder if Nigel will ever try to get the SYTYCD dancers to try to sing glory notes?

I’m not sure if some of these others have that same makeup, or whether they are just happy coasting on their 15 minutes of fame and leaving their future up to ‘fate’ .

I suspect that part of the problem is that if they didn’t get picked up by Sony/19R, they can’t start working on their albums (or negotiating deals) until late August. So, all they can do is “coast”. Must be frustrating for some of them.

  • aek

Several people mentioned that Adam was a quick study. He can learn lines, dance moves, take direction, very effortlessly. I guess it also helps to be a natural dancer too.

It helps that Adam has been performing in theatre, which often will include dance numbers, pretty much his entire life. lol.

When you take that into account, the other guys actually did pretty darn well, imo.

  • jpfan

“I realize Kris, Adam and Allison are already signed, so have backing, but they are all showing serious dedication by working so hard on their albums. Those 3 obviously have the drive and determination to try and make it in the business. I’m not sure if some of these others have that same makeup, or whether they are just happy coasting on their 15 minutes of fame and leaving their future up to ‘fate’ .”

Kris, Adam and Allison are all working on the albums that have to be released by the Fall. It has nothing to do with drive or determination. Anyone 19 signs has to work like crazy to get their rushed albums out before people forget about them.

The rest can’t do anything about their careers because they’re under contract to 19 until the end of August. And when they are released by 19 they will not be allowed to put out an album until all the signed Idols have released theirs.

So it has nothing to do with drive, determination, ambition. etc. If Lil was signed by 19, she’d be working hard on her album while if Allison were unsigned, she’d be doing nothing but talking about the tour.

  • flicker

^^Jpfan said it best. I’d only add that I think any of the remaining 7 would probably give their eyeteeth to be working as hard as Kris, Allison, and Adam. I don’t think lack of ambition has anything at all to do with it.

  • aek

I don’t really see what difference it makes if Danny talks about the meetings or not. I’m sure he wouldn’t do it if he had been specifically asked not to. It’s not like he has said he is getting the deal, just that he is meeting about it.

He was pretty much HOUNDED on Twitter for ANY information about a record deal by his fans after Allison got signed, and he really is pretty much an open book. That’s just his personality, which can sometimes be good and sometimes get him in trouble.

edit: STOP talking about and questioning the motives of other posters STICK TO THE SUBJECT

  • girlygirl

I understand part of what Kris, Adam and Allison are doing is because their labels want to get the albums out in November. But that doesn’t dismiss the fact that they are very driven and determined. Haven’t I seen lots of stuff on this (and other) site about how Taylor refused to work on his album until after the AI tour was over? Wouldn’t he have been pushed as hard by 19 to get his album out quickly as the current 3 are? It DOES have a lot to do with the individual musicians — how dedicated they are to working hard and putting out a strong product. The management and label can only do so mush pushing and prodding.

As for the others, except for possibly Danny, I have a feeling they have already been told 19 isn’t signing them. Anoop even said in one interview that he is looking for a label that shares his vision of what he wants to be as an artist. That sounds like he knows 19 isn’t picking him up. Look at Scott — he’s supposedly already recording an album on his own. And there are things the others can be doing — writing, meeting with potential collaborators, etc. Even if they can’t formally sign any contracts, there are things they can be doing to prepare for post-Idol careers in this biz.

  • Heart

    http://www.younghollywood.com/videos/filmtv/behind-the-scenes/american-idol-finalists-unplugged.html

It IS a cute interview! My favorite parts are where Adam “inspires” Kris to wake up that morning (reminds me of the famous Camden fanfic at Gossip Candy) and when Adam and Megan talk about their pre-stage rituals.

About Adam’s various dancing abilities, it’s obvious that he has some serious skills from the show especially the Paula Disco number and the Kiss & Tell video.

I’ve always wondered how he would fit it in with his current new sound. Lady Gaga and Beyonce and Timberlake all fit it in nicely with their performances/videos. I love how Adam moves/dances and I want it to look cool and sexy.

I also CANNOT WAIT for the Top 5 – 10 idols to sing Madcon’s Beggin’ for their group song. It’s one of my favorite summer hits, so I hope they smash it! It’s very a very catchy and danceable song and since they’re supposed to have choreography, it should be great! I will not go pee when that comes on!

Well, Taylor was the exception. Since S6, the 19 signed finalists have always had their albums out by the fall. I’m not saying K,A and A aren’t hardworking, driven, etc.I just think it’s too easy to assume the others aren’t as hardworking because 19 has passed on them.

And I’m sure the rest know 19 has passed on them. But I’m not sure what they can do about it while they’re on tour. And if something is in the works for them, they can’t say anything until they’re formally released. AI doesn’t really want Idol contestants still under contract, getting promo for themselves or other labels. Doesn’t work that way. Notice it’s taken the unsigned S7 contestants a full year or more to get their albums out. And they seem like a hard working bunch.

  • ppwars

they can’t start working on their albums (or negotiating deals) until late August.

Nothing would prevent them from negotiating, they just could not contract without a release from 19. They could even reach binding contingency agreements (deals outside 19 contingent upon 19 releasing them). I imagine several are in active discussions exploring various avenues for their futures.

  • BestAI

Can anyone please tell me what they meant by ‘drop it’ in this circumstance?

She has to be referring to a hip hop dance move. You bend all the way down with your knees and back up again. I can see Lil doing that, and of course, Adam. I love Adam’s krumping. I would love to see him in a club dancing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbudq_gDsqI

And there are things the others can be doing ‘” writing, meeting with potential collaborators, etc

Matt, Michael and Megan specifically mentioned that they are writing now. And, Matt has met with some collaborators, he has mentioned it in past interviews. (Don’t know about the others)

As for Scott already recording, he said he has a recording studio in his home, and that’s where he’s working. Not many people have that at hand. Most people have to pay big bucks for studio time.

I’m not trying to take anything at all away from the 3 who are signed. I just think it’s a big leap to assume the others are lacking drive. I think they are merely lacking opportunity.

  • girlygirl

Maybe I’m just projecting all my past anxieties onto the unsigned Idols (ha!). When I was just out of college, I worked as an assistant to a lit/talent agent, and my dream was to get into film development, and eventually be a producer. Well, of course to get ahead, you had to do a lot of networking — and me, being EXTREMELY shy and not a big partyer hated all that stuff. So 2 1/2 years later, I was still a lowly assistant, while most of the assistants who had been hired around the same time had been promoted to agent or had moved onto higher profile jobs as development or production execs. My personality worked against me obviously, but I think I also didn’t have the same drive and determination as the people who did get ahead. I ended up quitting, getting out of the film business entirely. I have a good job now that I enjoy, but I still wonder “what if…” Most jobs require networking and determination to get ahead, of course, but there just seems to be a higher rate of failure in high-profile fields like music.

  • Kirsten

Well, Taylor was the exception. Since S6, the 19 signed finalists have always had their albums out by the fall.

I kind of suspect that “The Story of Taylor” is a tale that 19 makes sure all new Idols know about. I heard that he was extremely difficult with the label and his refusing to record was probably part of that.

Now, little Idols, be good little boys and girls and listen to what Papa 19 says if you want to do well and make a second album.

Plus, it only makes sense to have your album out by the start of the Christmas buying season so that lots of people can think “Oh, I need a stocking stuffer for Mom. Oh, she watches Idol. I’ll pick up that CD for her” or “I can spread light throughout the world by gifting this here CD to everybody on the block, everybody I work with and everybody who is fortunate enough to cross my path. They will thank me for introducing them to my favourite Idol”

And, having a well-placed single for magical “iTunes GiftCard week” (week after Christmas) can really help to move the units.

  • girlygirl

I’d love to see my mom’s or dad’s face if I got them anything Idol related for Christmas! The only music they listen to is classical.

Tyra Banks loves telling aspiring models to do this, for some reason on which I won’t even speculate.

Is that move too raunchy for the Idols tour? Please drop it like that Adam!!

Well, thinking of Paris’s faux-Beyonce gyrations with a chair on the Season 5 tour, I’d say that it wouldn’t be considered too hot.

On the other hand, I think a lot of people felt that, because of Paris’s young age, her writhings were actually innocent and therefore just fine for a family audience. To me, that made them even more squicky, actually — seemed to me that having a just-17-year-old doing the stuff would make it even more likely that 7-year-olds in the audience would adapt the same moves, without realizing what the heck they were doing. lol (wouldn’t like to see that, myself)

Anyway, thinking of all that, I would imagine that the producers might be more inclined to think that it would be too raunchy if an adult like Adam did it — I expect they buy the “It’s not dirty if somebody underage is doing it, but it is dirty if an adult is” thinking.

  • Kirsten

It’s probably correct. You can see the numbers for the songs that made the top 200 in the numbers thread.

If you just look at his top 20 songs it is 1,822,907. I just added up the entire list of songs (and I probably made a few entry mistakes), but it came to 2,418,736.

Well in Taylor’s defense, I don’t think he was lazy. He was stubborn. He decided that he wanted to do a shadow tour with his old band that followed the AI tour. So he would get off stage from the arena, then go to some local bar and perform again with his band. THAT’s why he couldn’t make time to finish his album. For some reason, he decided the shadow tour was more important.

I am sure his label was not amused. Heh.

  • Lisa

Kirsten thank you. That is just incredible. They were also saying on the news no other artist had ever broken the 1 million mark sales in one week and he broke 2.3. I just hope the proceeds go to those kids. Not his parents. Nor Debbie Rowe, puhlease, chickie get a life.

  • Mary102

Is it me, or do some of these kids talk like they just expect a deal to fall into their laps? It doesn’t happen that way (well, not if you don’t finish in the Top 2, anyway).

I seriously think Kris, Adam, and Allison are the three who have the most potential for successful singing careers in the future. I would equate some of the others (Matt esp.) as potentially picking up a smaller indie label and releasing something similar to Michael Johns.

With the others, I dont’ see as much success in music. Anoop = should segue into an acting/tv personality type role. Ditto with Megan (she reminds me of a Kellie Pickler sort – quirky personality, very pretty, etc).

Danny is talented, but really really needs to figure out his style and niche. I still insist he hasn’t found that happy medium of what he does well and what he really wants to sing.

As for Adam’s dancing – yes, in musical theater, he would definitely be learning a lot of choreography (broadway shows are INSANE with some of the level of dancing required, in fact, you really need to be a triple threat (dancing, singing, acting) for some kinds of roles. So I imagine he has had some great experience with that.

  • BestAI

Back in Taylor’s season, some of the other contestants said that he had a temper, but he held it together on TV. I don’t know if that relates to being stubborn, but it could be combination of some problems he had.

Regarding Taylor after Season 5 – Whatever happened, Taylor learned a lot, no doubt, that will stand him in good stead. I’m just glad to see him make a living doing what he loves.

  • colette

I saw an article that talked about how Idol contestants really only have about 11 months from the time the show ends to capitalize on the exposure they received. After that, the next crop of AI contestants comes along, and those from previous years can get pushed aside.

You know, that’s true and it ain’t. Look at Jennifer Hudson, who hit the stratosphere long after her Idol boot. Constantine Maroulis is doing great, after some lull years. And I love Melinda Doolittle’s album, which came out nearly two years after she was on the show.

I think the whole deal, really, is TALENT and CONNECTIONS. The recording industry, as we’ve all lamented many a time, is in the dumpster and hopelessly clingling to formula stuff when they should be scouting and grooming more new talent. So it’s tough to start with.

But I truly believe that the people who make it usually are those who should eventually. I say “usually” because, Lord help me, I think all of Kelly Pickler’s talents are in her bazooms….

  • Mary102

Good point about the time lag – that certainly doesn’t seem to matter much for people like J. Hud. I agree that the key is just to keep at, keep good connections, and something will hopefully come along when the timing is right.

Did they? I don’t really remember that. I do remember that someone said that he really laid into one of the AI minders for saying something rude to Elliott, and for following him into the bathroom. lol.

He also said in his book that he tried to organize the contestants to demand more money was it? from AI. Something about they wouldn’t have a show without the contestants….yeah, and that couldn’t have gone over too well either.

I think Taylor is very talented, and it’s a shame that he has in some ways been turned into an object of mockery. But I do think he’s a little hard headed and may in many ways have shot himself in the foot. I still love the guy, but he’s a little eccentric. lol.

And yes, there were many who thought Adam should win with his pants coming in as runner up, although which pants ought to receive the title was much-debated (I can’t remember for certain, but I may actually have been the first to suggest that the pants deserved runner-up status, LOL [I was definitely *one* of the first]). I personally put my money on either the RoF pants or the WLL pants (it’s all about the *zipper*!). In terms of ‘dirrrrty’, IMO that “drop” is probably one of the least-raunchy moves in that clip, hehe.

    USAToday
The set boasts a 42-by-18-foot video-screen backdrop, as well as four smaller screens, each receiving separate signals.

It should be interesting to see how they configure that at GM Place (Vancouver), considering that according to TicketMaster, the seating goes all the way around back of the stage.

    Boston Herald
The American Idols Live Tour opens July 5 in Portland before heading south to Los Angeles on July 16 and Ontario a day later.

Interesting again, that the writer does not mention that the third stop of the tour is Vancouver on July 8th (not to mention Tacoma & the 4 other California dates before L.A. on the 16th).

    Boston Herald re: Adam
” ¦earlier this month on the cover of Rolling Stone, talking about everything from his music to his sexuality (he’s gay, but then he figured you’d already guessed that.)’

I only quoted this because in an otherwise decent article, it really bugs me that the writer just HAD to put that in there – why on earth did he not simply say “…earlier this month on the cover of Rolling Stone” and leave it at that?!? Arrgghh!

    Michael Sarver (via Boston Herald)
“Before we go on, I plan to go to the farthest seat from the stage, to get a sense of what it’s like,” says Sarver, who worked as a roughneck in a Texas oil field before making it on the show. “Because I think we need to see what that’s like, and make sure they have a good show. I really do.”

Wow, I feel a little bad for being surprised, but this is a very astute comment from Sarver. I think all ten of them, while the stage is being set up, ought to spare a few minutes and hang out in the nose-bleed sections of each stadium, just so they know exactly how far they need to ‘project’. Even you-know-who has never performed for an audience as large as they’re going to have during these shows, so I think this exercise would be nothing but beneficial – for them and the audience.

Don’t forget that their are video feeds everywhere in these arenas. I have been to live concerts (as well as a few churches) where I have watched the screens much more than the live performers. The guys doing the live feed filming are usually damn good and really bring the performers up close and personal.

Brian Less, the keyboardist from LMBO, played with Taylor at his gig in Detroit last Monday. It was the ultimate Taylor concert for many reasons. If you’re a fan, check out YouTube for songs such as Maybe You Should and Indiscriminate Act of Kindness. He also did a killer version of Don’t Let Me Down.

(Dingo, if you read this, check it out. It was raw, acoustic Taylor at his best.)

As I understand it, the former members of LMBO all play in different bands, but sometimes play together under various names.

anyone know how this year’s tour is selling? I can’t imagine it will sell as well as last year’s, with the economy in the shape it’s in. Plus last year had so many likable finalists. I like alot of this year’s, but I strongly dislike alot of them too!

Thanks for the information Chewsday. I knew that Taylor and Brian were really close. I’m gonna look at the videos. Taylor is so good in that kind of setting. I saw him at the first shadow tour concert at Cyote Joe’s in Charlotte, NC that year. He was AWESOME!

He also said in his book that he tried to organize the contestants to demand more money was it? from AI. Something about they wouldn’t have a show without the contestants’ ¦.yeah, and that couldn’t have gone over too well either.

Taylor had a book? Was it a tell-all?

A good article on Taylor. Especially interesting is the information about the success of his 2007 tours.

Thanks for the article. I ordered a copy of the magazine.
I love the book ‘Heart Full of Soul’ written by Taylor Hicks.
