Oh, if only today’s kids were as tough as we were

“American Idol” 2006 competitor Bucky Covington is back on the country chart with his latest single, “A Different World.” The song, written by Mark Nesler, Jennifer Hanson and Tony Martin, is a paean to a childhood without seat belts, bike helmets or the surgeon general’s tobacco warning labels.

The chorus:

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a nice evening it will be standing room only,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he said.

Pickler was the sixth-place finalist in the 2006 season of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and one of Simon Cowellà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s favorite singers. No. I mean, I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s entertaining but ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not much to do with music. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s more to do with personality and being famous, you know? It would be great if all the artists wrote their own songs. That would be interesting…

‘Pop Idol’ Winner To Star In Discotivity Show

Before ‘American Idol’ (yes, such a time existed) there was ‘Pop Idol,’ the British singing TV show that launched in 2001. It looks like the second season winner, Michelle McManus, has landed an unusual stage role: Mary in Discotivity, a disco version of the Nativity Story.

Hicks’ loyal fan base expected to pack The Maryland Theatre

While Williamsport resident Geraldine Andrews said she hadn’t seen Hicks’ blog entries or YouTube videos, she said she checks the news at his Web site regularly.

“I love his music. … He just makes a lot of sense,” said Andrews, 53. “He’s just a down-to-earth all-American and that, to me, that’s what ‘American Idol’ should be.”

Hicks’ loyal fan following is one reason Brian Sullivan, executive director of The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown, is so happy to have Hicks performing in the historic 1,377-seat theater on Friday, July 6. As of Thursday, June 28, all but 120 tickets were sold.

“Everyone knows him. His music’s really very excellent. He has a huge following and having him at The Maryland Theatre opens up the doors to a lot more (artists) coming in,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said he’s been aggressively marketing the theater to potential performers, including going after Hicks. He tries to lure artists who could stop by the theater on their way to other gigs. The access to Interstates 81 and 70, and fairly close proximity to Interstate 95 helps, he said.

Hicks is another name he can add to the list of well-known artists who have performed at the theater in its 93-year history, a list he rattles off when trying to book acts.

    ‘Soul Patrol’ in Hagerstown
‘American Idol’ winner Taylor Hicks to take theater stage July 6

    By JULIE E. GREENE

“American Idol” isn’t the only cultural phenomenon Taylor Hicks has been a part of.

His self-titled album, his first since winning “American Idol” in 2006, was released last December, reached as high as No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and went platinum (more than 1 million copies sold) in January.

Hicks’ first single – “Do I Make You Proud?” – hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop 100 Hot 100 charts. The song has raised more than $100,000 so far for the American Red Cross to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies, according to an e-mail from Julie Thurmond Whitmer, director of celebrity and entertainment outreach for the Red Cross. For every CD, digital download, ringtone and ring-back tones of the song, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Red Cross.

Hicks describes his stage show as “high-impact soul aerobics,” James Brown meets Richard Simmons.

Hicks’ popularity, along with his raspy voice, premature gray hair and “Soul Patrol” sign-out, likely led Weird Al Yankovic and “Saturday Night Live” writers to parody the blues and soul singer.

JibJab posted a music video of “Do I Creep You Out?” – a parody of Hicks’ “Do I Make You Proud?” – that shows the singer’s cartoon likeness singing the ballad and stalking a woman. The video can be seen at http://www.jibjab.com.

So what does Hicks think of these parodies?

To find out that and more read on …

Posh and Co return but they REALLY, REALLY refuse to sing

They were as loud, proud and opinionated as ever.

In fact there was only one moment when the reunited Spice Girls didn’t have that much to say.

It was when the Daily Mail suggested they might like to sing a song.

Giving their best girl power glare, they refused to take the chance to silence claims that their voices are to be digitally enhanced at their concerts.

“We don’t need to prove anything. We have nothing to prove. Come and see the show if you want to see us sing,” they replied…

…Earlier this week, the Mail revealed the group would – as many other pop acts do – use a computerised system which kicks in to correct out-of-tune live singing…

How is that not humble? It’s soul music that is active. He’s describing the style of the show. He didn’t say “the best music ever!” or “I put Ray Charles to shame”.

Exactly. The man knows he’s good and he ain’t too ashamed to admit it or think of himself amongst great entertainers. If you don’t toot your own horn, nobody else will, especially in Taylor’s case. It was this determination, self-belief and confidence that got him from being an unknown in smallclubs to becoming an in-demand world-wide public figure. Read the book ;)

BTW, this is the description of Taylor’s book in the NYC Public Library system, who incidently, ordered 104 copies for their city-wide branches. 104!! woot!

    UNDER PRESSURE / JOSS STONE

Yes, The wonderful Joss Stone DID ask me to play “Under Pressure” with her, and initially I did say yes. But when I realised how very different the arrangement was from the original, I realised that I was not going to be able to do it justice. So we talked, and I apologised, and we agreed that we would get together and create something new instead, some time soon.

Joss is a great talent, and that was a hard thing for me to do. If it had been “let’s try this out together down the pub”, I would have gone, no question. But this is an important concert and there is so little time to prepare; it’s not the time to be doing something which you’re not completely au fait with. If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing GREAT. Nothing else will do. I didn’t feel confident that it was within my capabilities to be great, doing this, at this time.

So, my apologies to all ! But something will happen. I feel it in my bones. And … Dear Joss … Rock ! I will be watching on TV !

I just finished watching the Diana concert and reading these posts of it. lol Funny how we all watch the same thing and get something diffrent from it. I didnt think Kenye was good and I was kinda bothered by Diddy. I felt he went overboard and to me it felt disengenious. I thought some of the veteran performers really got the crowd going good. It was fun to see Harry and William grooving to the songs.

fyi The Diana concert on at 8pm is only an hour long. Tomorrow evening at 7pm ET Vh1 will reair the whole thing.

A cautionary tale and proof once again that what goes up, can — and often does — come down hard:

It used to be easy to be a fan of Lauryn Hill, back when she was making some of the most important and successful albums of the 1990s and winning record numbers of Grammy Awards. It’s gotten much more difficult in recent years, as the diva has hidden herself from the public, appearing just enough to give Courtney Love a run for the money in the wacko pop star race.

And it was darn near impossible to be a fan of Hill during her rare concert appearance Wednesday night at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland.

How bad was this concert? Well, calling it a fiasco would be an insult to fiascos everywhere. It was so bad that it sent 75 to 100 fans into the lobby only four songs into the set, all of them grumbling loudly and demanding refunds. Those were the smart ones – the rest of us remained in our seats and watched what amounted to a two-hour train wreck.

    Congrats, Mrs. Trep!!

Nevada, thanks for posting that article about Lauryn Hill. Wow, does that make me sad. I loved “Miseducation” and have a recording of her singing “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” that brings tears to my eyes every time. I’m very sad she seems to have sunk so low.

I just deleted a bunch of posts. Stop the bickering. The bickering, defensiveness and my idol is better than your idol crap is pretty much why I closed the daily.

  • HMWD

Sorry, mj. My Idol isn’t better than anybody; but I love him. :)

…The Diana concert…Tomorrow evening at 7pm ET Vh1 will reair the whole thing.

I don’t believe this is correct.

On July 4 at 7 p.m. EST and July 9 at 1 a.m. EST, VH1 will broadcast a 2 hour edit of the concert. That is according to VH1′s website schedule (and the Washington Post).

All concert performances are available as streaming video’s at the VH1 website.

Heh. This San Francisco Chronicle article about the same Lauryn Hill concert caught my eye yesterday. She even went so far as to quote a Nina Simone song to the unhappy crowd. Apparantly she was was far from apologetic to the audience.

Hicks describes his stage show as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“high-impact soul aerobics,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ James Brown meets Richard Simmons.

    No photochop of Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s head on Richard Simmonsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ body?? The quote begs for a photochopà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

And if James could somehow be worked into the photochop, it would be a great Canada Day gift for me :)
