Clarkson gets ‘Sober’; McPhee tells ‘Love Story’

…- “Love Story,” Katharine McPhee

2006 “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee projected a big brawny voice on TV and yet her debut “Over It” reached a tepid No. 29 on The Billboard Hot 100.

Follow-up “Love Story” again digs at the root of the dilemma: a mega-talented vocalist aligned with ill-fitting material. Both tracks are generously catchy and clever, but pushing popper McPhee toward R&B/ rhythmic is far from the big-ballad brand that prompted millions of votes on the show.

Warning label: 2007 winner Jordin Sparks won with the same tableau as McPhee. Will the label also transition the latter from what comes naturally, alienating the fan base? Now is the

SYTYCD/Danny dances to Elliott’s A Song For You

First of all, I wanted to thank LisaB for placing these articles here every morning. This is truly an awesome job that you do for this blog every morning and I wanted to personally thank you.

I agree with what Billboard is saying about Kat. I think Kat’s problem isn’t that she can’t sing for she definitely can or her songs are not good (“Over It” and “Love Story” are good catchy songs) is that the public in general has not bought into her being a R&B/Pop artist. I still perceive her as more of a Broadway singer/actress.

  • jpfan

I’m not a music industry insider just a AI stalker but Kat the pop princess seemed like a horrible idea from the beginning. Being very pretty and sexy is actually not enough to make it in that genre. I vaguely remember Kat says she convinced RCA to drop the SOTR type music and go with this new direction. On the other hand, who knows how many CDs, a more adult album would have sold. Her number one problem was always – no musical identity.

Currently the artists who stay true to their genre on idol are doing the best. Every country artist from the past two years on idol is successful so far.

  • jpfan

Thanks for the link to SYTYCD. I’m following the show this year and Danny (along with Pasha) is my favorite dancer so it was pretty cool to see this.

Thank you for the clip of Danny dancing to Elliots song eventhough that song was not my cup of tea it is good for him.I really have not watched it that much so it is nice to be kepted up to date.

Bo new cd is comming later this fall and so is Aces which is good to hear about both of them..Way to go guys and I hope Bos health hold up .

Daughtry is number three on the bald and the beutiful which is good and I wonder if Mr clean made the list.

Sidenote here before the pie throwing starts: Just because I am not into one song does not mean I am not into other songs that goes for all of the idols contestants too.

It might have helped if the author of the article actually paid any attention to what Kat actually did on the show. Kat didn’t even sing a big ballad that I can remember until final 8 night. Before then she built a fan base by doing songs like Since I Fell For You, Think, Until You Come Back to Me, Come Rain and Come Shine. R&B/Bluesy/Jazzy stuff. And probably her most notable performance other than SOTR was Black Horse and the Cherry Tree which is hardly big ballad material.

I think Kat and Jordin attracted similar fanbases to some extent, but I don’t think they had the same style at all.

  • sarahinwv

Pop, not to worry – no pie throwing from me. Everyone’s music taste is not the same and that’s okay. What a boring world it would be if we all had the same taste in music! :)

I was Taylor’s concert at Six Flags Over Georgia last night. Unfortunately, a huge storm came up when he was only 40 minutes into his set, and the rest of the show got canceled. This is the third time I’ve seen Taylor in Atlanta, and he is much more relaxed now that he’s out from under AI. He talked with the crowd in-between songs, and even came down into the audience singing as it began to rain. Of course, he was surrounded by security guards. It was nice to see so many familys there, including lots of teenagers and children.

  • Lu

Cool Paula (except for the rain). I’m seeing Taylor a week from tomorrow. It’s an outdoor show so I’m really hoping for no rain!

I hope that Narvel gets to manage Kelly. He thinks long-term as evidenced by Reba’s career. It doesn’t seem like that could be a bad move. The problem I see facing Kat and will face Jordin,is the fact that these singers are not allow to cultivate theirmage. They are molded into whatever is hip and hot for the moment and is only given one year to fit or be preceived a failure. Kelly seem to have been the only female from AI who did not have a real clear-cut image but was able to be generic enough that one can mold her into anything and it work. Plus, when Kelly first came out the soft pop girl image was the way to go. Now you either have to be a rocker chic or selling sex to get any real attention in the industry…Neither of which Jordon or Kat can pull of real well.. Hindsight is now making me wonder if Gina, the rocker chic, would have not been a better candidate had she won.

  • radname

Wow that Idol executive producer from Canada needs to get a clue, nobody from Toronto does good because Toronto doesn’t care about Canadian Idol. (not to mention that a lot of the people from Toronto just happened to suck huge that night.) It’s like being from LA, if you don’t have that home crowd voting for you, you aren’t going to last long in the competition.

  • Allen

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m agreeing with the posters about Kat and her music style. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no doubt that she has a great voice. My favorite performance of hers was NOT SOTR believe it or not. It was BHIACT. I loved it. I wish her songs had more of that sound.

I would love it if Kat had some songs like BHATCT on her CD as well. Unfortunately I don’t think it was very feasible for an idol debut CD. Nor would going in a Norah Jones direction that many people proposed for Kat. The thing about K.T. and Norah is they are both fairly unique on the airwaves. There aren’t a lot of other people that sound like them. Idol debut CDs have to be done in a fairly short amount of time and usually lean pretty heavily on using existing songwriters and songs that are already written (and for the most part people from idol are going to get the leftovers with the A material going to proven artists). K.T. writes her own stuff and I believe Norah does as well. So it is doubtful if there is much existing material laying around in their styles. Idol debut CDs mainly get created from the existing songrwiting infrastructure which means they are going to be based off popular styles that have a lot of songwriters to support them.

  • Kirsten

Have any Daughtry fans read the Joey Barnes bulletins?

I wouldn’t call myself a Daughtry fan, but you piqued my curiosity.

I think that it is very nice for Joey (Daughtry’s drummer) to stand up for Taylor Hicks and to call for a stop for the feuding on all sides. It’s all kinds of crazy. And it is getting old FAST.

I think I like Joey. He’s the cute one, right?

    Here are some excerpts:

I am tired of people bad mouthing others like taylor hicks…It’s 1 thing to
joke but it’s another thing when you go out of your way to hate another person whom you don’t even know!…Regardless of what you think you know or what you have read!…Forget it!….Don’t believe anything!…People get so caught up in their own soap opera!…Taylor is a Human Being!…So start treating him as such!…All the feuding going on from Both sides is F’n disgraceful!

    And then later

just got this reply and this is part of what it said…..and to whom wrote it…Don’t take this personally!

    Quote:

“The Soul Patrol started a war with us over a year ago when CHris was voted off and for some reason they think we still live in the past when we don’t”!

    WHAT!!!!!!…..WHO GIVES A FLYING freak!!!!!!….WAR!?!?!?!

War is in the middle east where many innocent…INNOCENT!!!…MANY!!!…people are dying!…I am speechless!……………………………………………………………………………….

Grow up!….Get your head out of your asses!

    freak THE DRAMA!!!!
    freak AMERICAN IDOL!!!!
    and on another note….freak SURVEYS!!!!

If you find my words to be offensive….BITE ME!

He talks about a lot of other stuff too, but I think the “Stop the War” message needs spreading, so that’s the part I excerpted. Don’t like it…Bite me! (j/k about the “bite me”…I wonder if Ghandi ever said “Bite me” when he was calling for peace? Lennon might have)

Snarking is fine, IMO. Warring? Not so much, IMO. Snarking is about laughing. Warring is about hate. Nobody on a cheesy television show about singing is worthy of hate. Dislike? sure. Hate. No (IMO).

There are a ton of Ace fans turning up at the Cutters game tonight, so you’ll be in good company. Get in line for the meet n greet early, so you don’t miss the whole baseball game (unless you don’t care about the game).

And don’t worry about him being prettier than you. Once Ace wraps his arms around you, you’ll feel gorgeous! ;)

  • Lu

Mad – I did not realize that about Elliott’s Wait for You vid – very cool!
Pop – Happy to hear you’re spinning WFY on your pod!
Kylene – If you can get close to Ace, you will get an autograph and a pic. He’s very tuned into his fans. He’s an awesome person and he’ll make sure everyon who wants one will get their autograph or pic. He’s the bomb… super duper great guy.
Joey Barnes – It took guts my friend but you are a prince. Way to put it out there. You’re so right. The war people need to be concerned with has nothing to do with American Idol. The “my idol is better than your idol” crap is beyond stupid. The show is OVER. I think comparisons can go on in a fun way but the hate, conspiracy theories… geesh.

  • Lu

And donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t worry about him being prettier than you. Once Ace wraps his arms around you, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll feel gorgeous! ;)

Just remember… Ace is MY boyfriend!

  • pj

    Ahem. I heard that, Lu!!!

Kylene, have fun! I wish I could go. I heart baseball and Ace!

  • calimari

OK, I’m streaming Kelly Clarkston’s new CD. I’ve never paid attention to her music other than that which is played constantly on the radio. When she sang Never Again at the Idol finale, I wasn’t sure of the song, but I heard it later on the radio & found I liked it. So I listened to Sober – not bad. Right now “Irvine” – I love that song. One listen – love it. Now I’m curious about the others on the CD.

  • madaboutu

Paula………….I just read about the Joey Barnes remarks on here too. Perhaps someone will put the URL up for you and us to read off his myspace. The artists need to have a heart to heart with their fans too. They all have the means now, with the internet. I am thinking that it embarrasses them if they read fans remarks such as Joey is talking about. It’s why I am unable to snark.

  • madaboutu

Is there a poster who was a fan of Fantasia when her book came out? I would like to know if: she had book signings, and if someone went to one. Thanks

  • HMWD

According to Google, yes, Fantasia did have book signings.

  • http://jgrollersellshomes.com juliegr

Kirsten: Can you give us the url for Joey’s myspace?

    Thanks

  • madaboutu

HMWD………..thanks for that info, but I wanted to hear from someone who also went to one. Arista has sent out the rules for Taylors book signings, (yes, Arista)and I wanted to know if they were as strict with Fantasia. Or Clay….I guess Clay had a book too.

  • JP

    No, Lu, Ace is MINE!!

    How ya doin’, PJ? ;)

  • griz

I’m curious – besides Fantasia, Clay, Mandisa and now Taylor, who else from AI has written a book?

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m curious – besides Fantasia, Clay, Mandisa and now Taylor, who else from AI has written a book?

Simon Cowell & Randy Jackson both wrote books about American Idol.

  • jpfan

What strict rules? Usually, the rules for books signing say that the person will only autograph the book so no getting signed CDs, pictures, etc. Sometimes they also limit the photographs but those are the only rules I’ve ever heard of.

  • madaboutu

jpfan……….for those who have never been to a book signing, the rules might seem strict. I have been to book signings but not by musical artists. A little looser but of course for various reasons they have to have control. Just asking for those who are going to Taylors and at first I was a little taken back that it was Arista that was making the rules and not Random House……..but I can understand it now.

  • griz

    Thanks Nevada!

jpfan – apparently, Taylor will only be allowed to sign his name (no personalizations), no pictures, nothing else signed (except the CD if you bought a book). You can’t hand the book to Taylor either. You have to hand it to an employee, and then he/she hands it to Taylor and visa versa. Four book maximum.

  • jpfan

Those rules don’t seem so strict. The only weird part is you can’t hand Taylor the book. I guess they don’t want the nutjobs grabbing him. Four book maximum – I guess they don’t want the hard core fans to gobble up all the copies. Taylor could probably use a bodyguard too.

It’s a little odd that Arista is making the rules. Are they getting some $ from the book?

  • http://jgrollersellshomes.com juliegr

You’re right — this is SOP for booksignings — the monitors will also probably limit the amount and length of conversations with Taylor so the line can keep moving. I like that Arista will be listed as the rule setters — thereby sparing Taylor comments from disappointed fans that he didn’t “make eye contact, engage in conversation, give hugs, etc.”. as was sometimes the case following the “meet and greet” episodes. You may remember, that comments like this almost resulted in the discontinuation of meet and greets during the first tour.

  • andi

You may remember, that comments like this almost resulted in the discontinuation of meet and greets during the first tour.

Really? I knew people complained but I didn’t know he thought about not doing them because of it. Well, I hope that doesn’t happen this tour – I don’t see him until the end of August and I want a m&g damnit!

  • RightSaidFred

    The only weird part is…

It is typical at book signings that you hand your book to someone other than the author — often a store employee. It has nothing to do with Taylor. Limiting the number of books signed is also typical. In fact, you are often limited to only one or two books. Again, it has nothing to do with Taylor. Stores often have a stack of pre-signed copies available if you want to purchase more. Someone is usually there to move the line along and limit discussion with the author, as well. Not unique to Taylor.

Although the “rules” were announced through Arista, they are usually determined through a combination of the store’s wishes and typical ‘protocal’ and special requirements of the author, if any.

  • madaboutu

Hmmmm…..lots of good feedback on the book signings. I was taken aback by Arista being involved at first, but then, I wondered if they have a deal with Random House or if there is something in the Idols contract whereas they get something out of the book or can keep control on what the person says in the book.

As for not touching Taylor. I could think of alot of things business related. He is in the beginnings of another long tour. Getting sick would not be great at this time. Keeping contact to a minimum seems right, whether it is his wish, or the labels. He was prone to alot of infections up until the last one in Feb. He has been in top voice since then.

  • Lisa B

It’s not normal practice to fondle/maul an author at a book signing.

  • jersey

    LOL Lisa B.

  • RightSaidFred

    As for not touching Taylor…

LMAO. Why do you need to touch Taylor? I’ve been to a LOT of book signings and I’ve never seen an authour have physical contact with a customer. That includes shaking hands. It’s a book signing for Pete’s sake. Heck, often photographs aren’t even allowed.

The exception I’ve experienced are readings, where there is sometimes a “chat” session afterwards — sort of like a low key cocktail party — and the author will shake hands with people.

LisaB and coco……..I would hope people could tell the difference between a book signing and an orgie, but one never knows. That is probably why Clay had that humungous bodyguard behind him, just in case some didn’t. :)

    This is from Tami Gosnell:

    Tami News

    Hello everyone!

I finally got a chance to sit down and fill you all in on what’s been
happening! At the beginning of May, I went to Cannon Beach, Oregon to
do some songwriting, catch up on some business with my manager, and
play a show at the Warren House Pub. I actually got some press out
    of this impromptu gig.

“American Idol Contestant Surprises North Oregon Coast”

Gosnell plays Warren House in Cannon Beach

(Cannon Beach) — The tiny town of Cannon Beach got a bit of a
surprise Wednesday with an appearance by a former contestant on Fox’s
    “American Idol” show.

Tami Gosnell played a practically impromptu set at the Warren House
Pub that night, to a mellow but somewhat full house, filling the show
with powerful acoustic versions of her original material and a
rousing, rather intense set of covers from a variety of eras. She
also cut loose a bit for BeachConnection.net cameras and added some
amusing material near the end of the show.

Gosnell appeared briefly on this last season’s “American Idol.” Her
audition and subsequent quick dismissal from the show made a major
impact on the press at the time, garnering much attention by the
media as the big pick during the show’s preliminary airings of
accepted auditions. Gosnell was shown getting praised by even the
ill-tempered Simon Cowell, getting the green light to join the top 40
contestants in Hollywood. She was among the first 16 to be nixed from
that group, footage which the show also aired. On top of her gutsy
audition, it showed her walking out and telling people nearby that
she’d made it into the first cut. It later showed her walking out and
telling cameras she was cut from the first Hollywood group.

    Gosnell clowns for the cameras

Gosnell is currently under the wing of music industry
promoter/producer Scott Stimpson, who lives part time in Cannon
Beach. Stimpson is co-owner of two music companies: one which manages
up and coming acts like Gosnell; another that has in the past booked
major national acts, such as Guns ‘N’ Roses and Hootie and the
    Blowfish.

Stimpson brought Gosnell out to the area to perform coffee
house-style, just before she had to head back to her hometown of
    Denver, Colorado.

“She had quite an impact on the audience when her segments first
aired,” said Stimpson. “She had the most hits of all the female
singers at the time. The Associated Press ran a story saying she was
basically the most interesting at that point.”

That AP story did some siazable things for Gosnell’s career, she
said. The show itself was major publicity, but the subsequent media
    buzz was even bigger.

“We’re now in touch with a lot of publicists who want to work with
her,” Stimpson said. “We’re heading to Memphis to record some songs
soon, and there’s a record company in L.A. that’s interested in her.
There’s a great team that’s developing here. She’s been talking to
the press constantly since the show.”

Stimpson said Gosnell’s buzz included numerous comparisons to Janis
Joplin, including comments she was the closest “American Idol” would
ever come to having someone like Joplin on the show.

Gosnell’s voice has much of the same bluesy, commanding style that
was indicative of Joplin, but her material has a surreal sense about
it: almost as if Mazzy Star or Tori Amos had joined forces with the
deceased icon. Her songwriting is intelligent, even complex in
moments. Her own material far outshines whatever she can possibly do
to reiterate the songs of others’, no matter how passionate the
performance. It’s not hard to wonder if she was artistically injuring
herself by associating with the “American Idol” franchise, widely
regarded among music critics as a problematic, aesthetic cancer in
    the U.S. music industry.

Gosnell goofed around briefly with various patrons. After an extended
break, where the show appeared to have ended, she started in again
with some interesting covers from bands like Pink Floyd. Gosnell and
the audience got particularly wild near the end of the evening,
according to various reports from residents. This included one man
taking his shirt off during the show and amusing everyone— The
    Beach Connection

On May 13th, I arrived in Nashville for some songwriting sessions
with some great writers there, including Amanda Williams
(amandawilliamsmusic.net). It was very productive, fun, and
inspiring. Then I played some songs at Blue Bar on the 14th and Fuel
on the 15th. Then we hopped into a great studio and recorded one of
the songs we wrote called ‘The One That Got Away’. Thanks to Amanda,
I had a blast in Nashville and I will be making regular trips to and
from there for more writing, playing, and recording.

The last weekend of May I attended the Durango Songwriters Expo in
Santa Barbara, CA. I made so many great contacts, got to hob-nob with
some major players in the business including a private sing-along with
Tony Scalzo of Fastball. I also got to show some of my talent on
stage at the late night open mic, and I must say the response was
great. The weekend was so inspiring I wrote some new songs- once
again reminding me that my music knows no genre it just simply is!!
June was a month of gathering even more inspiration as I spent almost
2 weeks on the road beginning in Northern California. I played an
opener for the Jerry Garcia Band there in Guerneville, had a few days
off to look for a place to live. On the 19th, I saw the best show of
my life. Roger Waters of Pink Floyd played the Oakland Coliseum.
They did the whole Dark Side of the Moon album and also songs from
The Wall, Ummagumma, and Animals. Tears streamed down my face as
they fused music, politics, pure raw emotion, and multimedia in a way
that no one can. Then it was off to Moab, Utah to play a show with my
cohorts Baked Iguana at Frankie D’s. I had a great time there, the
club was great, and Moab is so beautiful, I had to stay an extra
    day!!

Thank you all for reading my update, and thanks for spreading the
word about me. I am recieving over 1,000 hits a day now and have a
map showing where visitors come from on the home page. We’re
    wordwide baby!!

    Peace out!
    Tami Gosnell

    Go see her she’s fantastic.
