DRAMA QUEEN
PAULA ABDUL JUGGLES FAME, TEARS, RED CARPETS, TINY DOGS AND MORE TEARS IN HER WACKY REALITY SHOW

As revealed on the new Bravo “reality” show, “Hey Paula,” it takes a quartet of underlings to keep her celebrity high-wire act going. There’s Daniel, the patient hair and makeup artist who takes four hours to get the “American Idol” judge ready to attend the Grammy Awards. There’s Kylie, her stylist, who, tragically, doesn’t pack the sweat pants Abdul wants to change into after the awards show when she dashes to the airport for a flight to Philadelphia where she will hawk her jewelry on QVC. There’s Courtney, her assistant, and finally, there’s Jeff, the publicist, who’s there when his very sensitive client regularly bursts into tears and sometimes breaks into a grin. When she warns, “I don’t want to be in a bad mood,” he knows it’s time to do battle.

KELLY CLARKSON: “MY DECEMBER”

After the Page Six stories about the power struggles surrounding Kelly Clarkson’s third record, “My December” – from Clive Davis’ demand that it be less rock and more pop to her summer tour going kaput – the album finally arrives Tuesday without a hitch. After listening, you have to wonder what all the bitching was about. It’s hardly the worst CD an American Idol has released (that dubious honor goes to Taylor Hicks). As Simon might say, “December” is “just OK.” ….

Former `Idol’ hits the stage in `Color Purple’

LaToya London was on one of the hottest seasons of “American Idol,” where she finished just under Jennifer Hudson, Diana DeGarmo and winner, Fantasia Barrino.

While Hudson won an Oscar in “Dreamgirls,” and DeGarmo and Barrino both made Broadway appearances, London is not far behind her past “Idol” mates.

Today, the 28-year-old portrays Nettie in the North American tour of “The Color Purple,” which is playing in Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre through Sept. 2. She began the show in April and is contracted for a year. The play will tour through 2010 nationally and abroad according to London…..

Memphis grooves to its own soundtrack

…A partnership that includes Simon Fuller, a co-creator of “American Idol,” has paid Lisa Marie millions for the rights to use Elvis’ and Graceland’s names and likenesses. Although she still owns the house, they are buying up land around Graceland, and there’s fear, some locals told us, that the quiet neighborhood could become more of an amusement park or worse — if hotels blossom here, people might stay just in this area and miss the whole history of blues, soul and rock as told along Beale Street and at Sun and Stax studios…

Technology forces networks to rethink schedules

…The breaks weren’t the only reason for the missing audience. “American Idol” stole viewers from everyone.

Still, don’t expect to see that trick again. ABC will hold back “Lost” until midseason and run it straight through into May. Even more creative is NBC’s plan for “Heroes.” It’s creating a semi-spinoff called “Heroes: Origins,” which will be a separate six-week series existing in the “Heroes” universe, and eventually, it’ll send a character to the mother show.

If there is any good for viewers in this whole mess, it’s that networks are looking for that kind of inventiveness….

Reba and Kelly strike right chord

If you think Kelly Clarkson looks like she’s needed a friend lately, you can relax. She has found one: Reba McEntire.

McEntire, one of the most successful country artists of modern times, joins Clarkson, the “American Idol” winner who has been all over the charts in the past five years, for a CMT production of “Crossroads” (airing tomorrow at 8 p.m.) in which they sing a bunch of familiar songs together and then, between songs, sit down and chat.

It will come as no surprise to fans of these two American Sweethearts that they can harmonize on popular anthems as if they were born doing it, or that when they talk they sound like the Nashville branch of the mutual admiration society….

If the Simpson/Pickler rumor is true, someone PLEASE get them their own show. Or at least a recurring segment on Leno. I have a feeling there’d be, oh, a few laughs there!

  • jpfan

Kellie and Jessica Simpson friends?? Have they even met? I’m agreeing that some country fans didn’t get Taylor’s soul set. Elliott had a radio intereview yesterday and said he’s doing a song with Randy Jackson. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?? Do any of Randy’s productions ever get released? I’ve read about him producing other idols but nothing seems to get released.

  • squishy

Kellie Pickler and Jessica Simpson should have their own reality TV show together. I would definitely watch it.

  • Lu

Well, I’ll say this. I cannot wait to go see Taylor in two weeks but I wouldn’t be caught dead at a Country Fest! :)

  • sexygirl

I’m hoping one day Taylor and Elliott will do a couple of shows together. Something similiar to what they did with LMBO.

Taylor will win enough people over in time. One review is not the end of the world. Plus, I’m sure he won a few fans over. I’m sure the reviewer was speaking from her viewpoint not the entire ground…She is entitled to it. I’m sure others who attended will see it from a different perspective.

  • squishy

Taylor’s review wasn’t bad actually. It said he sounded great and played the heck out of the harmonica. It wasn’t that the performance was bad but that the Country fans were just not into it.

  • Lu

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m hoping one day Taylor and Elliott will do a couple of shows together. Something similiar to what they did with LMBO.

I am definitely NOT looking forward to the Spice Girls reunion. Isn’t almost everybody married now with kids? I just can’t see tween girls following them like they used to (or teens/adults either). They have moved on the Hannah Montana’s of the world.

    Morning everyone!

Awwwwwww, Squishy, cheer up. Chris wouldn’t do too well with a Country crowd either. :)

How is everyone this fine Sunday morning? I’m gonna make one more attempt to get into MJ’s Fort Knox chat tonight. I’ve missed ya’ll. Dang this new computer! *&^^%$#@!

  • squishy

Who knows if Chris would do well in front of a Country crowd but the article isn’t about Chris but about Taylor.

  • bean99

I didn’t like the Spice Girls the first time they were out, Squishy.

Interesting that Taylor doesn’t seem to introduce his band members. That’s the 2nd time I’ve read that. He’s doing that, cancelling and no-showing events, changing his Beatle song last minute for the finale ….. :blink_tb: I will say that having him at a country fest is strange. I imagine Daughtry would have had as hard a time or even worse, lol.

I just want to stick up for Kelly re: the discussion yesterday. She really has an incredible voice and it’s not just pop or rock. I’ve recently watched season 1 rewind and was so impressed when she was belting out those songs like It’s raining Men, Respect, etc.

  • Lu

Missgirl! I miss you in chat!

I’m listening to AT40 (w/Ryan Seacrest) right now. Kelly Clarkson is being interviewed. It’s a nice interview. She sounds unphased and confident despite all the uproar surrounding her new cd.

I know people joke about Ryan but I like him. He seems to recognize and appreciate talent and he’s a fun interviewer in my opinion. His interviews are light and funny but not disrespectful.

  • bean99

I like Ryan too, Lu. He doesn’t mind playing the fool or being the butt of jokes on the show and it does help lighten things up at times. My favorite this season was when he was trying to dance like Blake and sing “who’s your daddy” in that weak voice. :laugh_tb:

  • Paula

This review is by somebody that was at the Country Fest where Taylor performed Friday night:

“After Taylor started I looked around and most people were still in their seats and of the ones that left I saw many come back after he started. He got their interest and people started to applaud after the first few songs. His set was really good and he did an awesome job..in my opinion there is no way he didn’t gain fans last night.
My point is a lot of the people there were unfamiliar with his songs and stayed and listened but didn’t get up and scream..that doesn’t mean they weren’t impressed. They were impressed enough to stay and watch..and the majority of the crowd did stay and watch….and there were not boos or bad signs held up.”

  • Abilymom

Jeez, bean, two or three shows have been cancelled because of scheduling conflicts out of many, many shows. Every time I’ve seen him he’s introduced the band, and many others have commented that he has as well and can’t understand why the reviewer said that. If he indeed forgot those two nights, it doesn’t mean he never introduces them.

  • mississippigirl

    I’m sorry squishy….was only making a joke.

Lu! Good to see you too!

This may have already been talked about, but I just read my new In Style magazine and there’s a Q&A article with *** about her beauty secrets. She says she might go blonde this summer. And, this was surprising, it seems Kellie Pickler introduced her to the pricey La Mer skin cream, but Nick says it reminds him of his mother.

Well howdy msgirl, and a good Sunday morn’ to you too.

Thanks for the sweet Elliott article Lu, sounds like it was a cathartic experience for him. I’ll always love E for introducing me to the music of Donny Hathaway. And put me on board for a few Taylor/Elliott shows :)

Taylor at Countryfest is akin to Trace Adkins gigging at Ozzfest. Just not his scene. What were they thinkin’?

Re Simon F. buying up property in Memphis, why does that scare me. I wonder just what his plans are…maybe at least it will help the local economy. When (not if) Stax records rises in power, he’ll prolly be found trying to cut a deal with them, too.

The Spice Girls reunion makes me cringe…and did Geri Halliwell always wear such ridiculous outfits? Get some drawers on, woman! :lol_ee:

  • chewsday

I was at Country Fest (recap is on the b. board, if you’re interested). From my perspective, the country fans didn’t seem to know what to make of Taylor, but they were a polite if not enthusiastic audience. Typical for that event, the crowd increases as the performance goes on (after they’ve replenished whatever it is they’re drinking). By the time Taylor was finished, the crowd was a pretty good size, and I saw very few people leaving early. There was no “verbal dissatisfaction” expresssed.

Taylor didn’t change anything up in terms of set list or arrangements. I think his mind set may have been, “This is who I am. Hear my voice.” Of course, I could be wrong about that.

In my opinion, it was an odd gig for him, but it was exposure to a new group of music lovers. With that many people on the grounds, I would guess that at least a few of them took notice. One fan at a time….

  • sammy

I agree that it is odd. Bucky might have been a better choice for them. Wonder who’s idea it was.

Actually, by that time of the evening, so many in the Country Fest audience were, shall we say, slightly inebriated, that I’m not sure they were all that able to judge what they were hearing. Sorry, but there was none of that “spectacle” kind of behavior.

  • ShabbyChic

Oh by the way William Hung knows what he is doing and is making more than any idol in season five ecpet for chris D in a yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Laughing all the way to the bankà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..

Er…well, that was sort-of my point. People stay and watch William, but it’s not because he’s a great singer. :lol_wp:

  • mississippigirl

Yeah, but I’ve just never seen a book limited to a two year span of ages. Why just 9 & 10? How much different is an 11 year old from a 10 year old? It’s just weird, but maybe it’s a mistake. Oh well, what do I know? I have no children anyway, lol.

  • ShabbyChic

If you are talking to me, MJ, I read this blog everyday. My comments were strictly directed towards an article posted here about Taylor.

Wonder if Taylor’s book will be for ages 80 & up?

This book company trying to reach kids got me to thinking…and I just had a long conversation with my brother today about this very thing. May I poll you mothers out there? Do your kids’ schools today require them to read true classics, like To Kill A Mockingbird? I ask because we realized that our school did not and I think it’s a shame.

  • bean99

My kids have read many of the classics for school over the years, Mississippigirl. I think my older one had TKAM in middle school.

Thanks bean. I am just curious. And before anyone starts to think “well, maybe that’s what’s wrong with Mississippi..no reading required” lol…(yeah, I stepped right into that one!) we did read Steinbeck, Homer and a little Faulkner for good measure. :)

    http://www.mitchelllane.com/ml/whatsnew.php

Oh my goodness. These look like those insta-books that always come out after a disaster/terrorist attack/sensational murder. I guess some kids might read them if they won’t read anything else.

Here is an example of the prose:

“Unlike the previous year, when Kelly Clarkson was the obvious pick of the talent litter going into the final, this time America – as well as the American Idol judges – seemed evenly split over whether the winner should be Birmingham, Alabama’s Ruben “The Velvet Teddy Bear” Studdard or the boy next door with the golden voice, Clay Aiken, the pride of Raleigh, North Carolina”.

Does Kathleen Tracy write them all? Is she a real person or is she like Carolyne Keene, Franklin W. Dixon and half the writers of pulp romance fiction? (not that our dear Carolyne or Franklin would ever write a pulp romance)

Anyway, Clay has a book too:

One sentence paragraphs…now you’ve got me thinking about the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction contest (for the best first line in the tradition of “It was a dark and stormy night…”)

Here is a winner that at least mentions music so it’s kind of on topic:

A small assortment of astonishingly loud brass instruments raced each other lustily to the respective ends of their distinct musical choices as the gates flew open to release a torrent of tawny fur comprised of angry yapping bullets that nipped at Desdemona’s ankles, causing her to reflect once again (as blood filled her sneakers and she fought her way through the panicking crowd) that the annual Running of the Pomeranians in Liechtenstein was a stupid idea.

LOL Kirsten. Since I’m bored, I tried reading that in one breath. I’m feeling a little lightheaded at the moment. It could be all the Chris snark. Nah

  • day-tripper

Probably would go more like this:

“I also discuss what it was like when I realized Eminem has it right: when you only have one shot, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d better lose yourself in the music.”

  • mississippigirl

day-tripper… I’m CON-fused. Of what is this you speak?

  • Kirsten

Probably would go more like this:

We are talking about Kathleen Tracy here. She doesn’t write like that. Not flowery and breathless enough (although that was a pretty good platitude)

Here is what it will sound like:

Despite the stifling heat, the over 300 people who were packed in the CBS studio 4 were buzzing with anticipation. It was Wednesday, May 10, 2006, and the fourth person to be eliminated from the fifth season of American Idol was about to be announced. Certainty abounded, because this year’s contest seemed to have a clear winner. The only thing anyone knew was that Chris Daughtry was safe. Unlike in previous years when there was no obvious pick of the talent litter, this time America – as well as the American Idol judges – seemed certain on who the winner should be. Safe in this knowledge, little did they know the shocking announcement that Ryan was about to make. Something had gone terribly wrong. Much like the collapse of the dot-com boom, the explosion of the Hindenburg, the sinking of Titanic, the Fall of Rome and the end of the pet-rock fad, tragedy was about to strike.

    Chris Daughtry would go home.

Shock shook the conestants – written on all of their faces was the knowledge that it should have been them – the judges – horrified that they would be stuck with one of the remaining three runts of the talent litter – the audience – knowing that they were witnessing history – and the nation itself – aware that a deep injustice had been done. Reporters dashed for the exits to be the first to report on this urgent news. The crowd, as one, reached for their confiscated cell-phones and blackberries to alert friends and family back home of the impending doom. Nigel Lythgoe weeped. There was nothing to be done. The voters had spoken. The journey of the greatest musical hero our nation has ever known had ended, not in a bang, but with a set of puffed cheeks.

  • MN Sue

Riveting work, Kirsten, a great summer read. Would there be a chance of another installment?

  • jpfan

Haven’t been here all day but what’s up with all the Chris snark today? Did Chris sell another million CDs? Did he get nominated for a Grammy? Eeek.

  • mississippigirl

    LOL Kirsten!!!!

  • Abilymom

    jpfan, here’s a theory…maybe because it’s funny?

Why does there have to be an alterior sinister motive? I don’t get it.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

Kirsten made coco shed>>>>>>>>a single tear….actually more than a single…..but know this— every time daughtry sells a cd a wallet chain —somewhere—-clinks! congratulations to daughtry on another sell.

  • Abilymom

coco, careful. We’ve been reminded again that Chris gets carte blanche. I’ve joked a couple times today that kidding about Chris is off-limits, but I’m starting to believe that it truly is.

  • jpfan

Some of the Chris snark is funny but to me most of it just seems like “my idol good, your idol sucks.” Why do the Chris snark? Where’s the Taylor snark. His book seems like a dumb cheese fest as well.

  • Abilymom

jpfan, have at it! I’m bored tonight!

    I’ll wait…

  • jpfan

I dcn’t care enough about Taylor at this point to snark about him. That’s the truth. Sorry. Maybe, somebody funnier than me can do it.

  • Abilymom

OK, but caring has nothing to do with it, IMO.

I agree the book will be a cheese-fest, though. All those kind of books are. I just hope it doesn’t get made into a Lifetime movie like Fantasia’s…shudder.

I’m sure Jordin will get a book deal as well. Possible title…”I Was Only Seventeen!!”

  • meme

Seems as though Taylor is testing the waters out in a Country Festival atmosphere. Why would Taylor dress in a suit jacket and not a t-shirt and jeans. The Country Festivals are usually in the 90 degree range and full of beer drinkers and gool old boys, not a 9-5 banker type.

  • Kirsten

Some of the Chris snark is funny but to me most of it just seems like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“my idol good, your idol sucks.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Why do the Chris snark? Whereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the Taylor snark. His book seems like a dumb cheese fest as well.

Chris’s book is new news. Taylor’s book is old news. We’ve been snarking on that thing for the past year. Plus, Chris’s book has led us to a new treasure trove of snark…the “Blue Banner Biography” Books written about Idols and other notables (such as Brittany and Paris H) in the music industry. Those are the knock-off toys of the book biz and are always great fun to parody.

Just wait until we get our hands on the “Chicken Soup for the Idol Soul” coming out later this year!

  • radname

I read To Kill A Mocking Bird in school, but IMO it’s not the schools job to teach your children about reading of the great classics. That’s your job, I started reading when I was 3 and haven’t stopped thanks to my parents.

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

jpfan, don’t take it so seriously, mainly because it’s not meant to be serious.

I heard Cheese-It’s wants to sign Taylor for a commercial.

  • Abilymom

Wow, I disagree. It is most certainly the job of schools to teach the classics. What else would you have them teach when they are teaching English? Taylor’s book and romance novels?

I agree that reading and a love of learning should be encouraged at home, but it doesn’t rest solely on the parents. Most parents don’t have a literature degree.

  • day-tripper

“Why would Taylor dress in a suit jacket and not a t-shirt and jeans.”

He is just way too classy for that. Plus the extra heat from the jacket gives him that trademark after-O glow that the 401K-dumpers cannot get enough of.

  • radname

English is about grammar, spelling, Shakespere, reading and analyzing stuff like that. Not sitting a book infront of kids to read.

  • Ladybug

Been laughing since page 1 today!

Taylor’s “country” concert. Perhaps Taylor should have worn a tri-colored shirt with flames on it and a big black cowboy hat. It has been known to work for others.

Daughtrygnomes. I want the one with the guyliner. Are they available on Daughtryofficial.com? :happy_tb:

Kirsten. I am on the edge of my seat! I want to know what happens next!!!

  • Abilymom

radname, I’m really not understanding your point. No one here is saying that children should only read in school.

I’m sorry, but I’m an educated individual, but I’ll leave the teaching of Beowulf and the symbolism in a Tale of Two Cities to the professionals.

But that doesn’t mean that I don’t read to my kids, take them to the library, or have them read to me.

  • ShabbyChic

Radname, nobody said anything about parents not reading to their kids. My love of books today is a direct result of my mother. We lost ourselves in the pages of many books growing up and I’m thankful for it. But Abily answered better. :)

Shabby…glad you came back! I’ve wanted to ask you….are you in the shabby chic business? I’m looking for a particular old, primitive item. None of that new fake stuff though.

Taylor -scmaylor—-he is so on his way out and I am bored with him….I wanna talk about a real StaH!!!!!!!!…..HannaH……

  • chewsday

Hey, for a few brief seconds Taylor actually did put on a cowboy hat that night. I wasn’t fast enough with my camera to get a photo though. Darn! (It looked rather incongruous….) Brian G. wore a cowboy hat throughout the show and Loren wore a bandana on his head.
    **** **** ***** ****
Reading should start in the home, but I agree with Abilymom; leave the analysis and discussion of literary devices to the professionals.

BEAN99–so glad to hear you are watching Season 1 and Kelly. I watched every second and love her just as much as I do Taylor! For me, she has the “best voice” of anyone who has ever been on Idol! Ungodly powerful, a range most singers would kill for and every note perfection! She was just awesome! I love every note she sings..then and now…but I must admit.. I really miss what I pegged her “big notes”. Just when you thought she had given everything in the very beginning…you were always blind-sided by the “real” big notes! Enjoy the season…it really was great!

And Taylor is not a country singer…period!

    ————————————-
I absolutely agree there Albilymom. My mother never graduated high school until getting her GED after I graduated college. I didn’t grow up having a mother who did a ton of reading to me. She never would have been able to help me with Great Expectations, etc. That is why we have English teachers-to teach us how to appreciate books that don’t appear to deserve appreciating on the surface. LMOAO. (i think i made that one up, laugh my own a$$ off!) But even without any prompting, I was a huge book reader. I swear I read The Lord of the Rings twenty times by the end of high school. I continue to be book lover. My son also loves to read. Did you know that on average, people read 4 books a year? That is so sad to me. But I never would have gotten through some of the challenging books in high school without a good English teacher. Not all parents can help their children to understand challenging works.
