Music Review
My December (2007)
Kelly Clarkson

Are you on Team Kelly or Team Clive? It seems like everybody chose sides before even hearing My December, Kelly Clarkson’s darker, more personal, riskier third CD. There are those who see her as a bird escaping a gilded cage, co-writing her entire album and bravely forsaking the hitmakers Clive Davis assigned to 2004′s five-times-platinum Breakaway. Others view Clarkson as a spoiled brat, so impressed by her success that she’s telling the industry’s most established father figure to take a hike….

    Steinbeck’s American Idol

John Steinbeck may be best known for creating Tom Joad, but the author also provided the rough outline of Simon Cowell, a decade before the American Idol host was even born.

Newly revealed letters by one of Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s best known 20th century authors show that he was not only a prize-winning chronicler of his own times, but also a pop-culture genius, if more than a half-century before his time…

    http://bangordailynews.com/news/t/viewpoints.aspx?articleid=151267&zoneid=34

Good morning again, Lisa. I hope I did not re-post this. I happen to love John Steinbeck and was surprised to see his name mentioned with AI. :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

…Nonetheless, Clarkson’s most vulnerable moments are accomplished and affecting à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ from the frisky pleadings of ”Can I Have a Kiss” to the near-suicidal despair of ”Irvine.” If you ever wondered what Sarah McLachlan would sound like with an extra set of lungs, check out ”Maybe”; it’s a great slow build of a ballad in which Clarkson fantasizes about how the guy who got away would really understand her, if only she had another chance. The sentiment reeks of desperation, but with vocal willpower this indomitable, you’re surprised her ex hasn’t been sucked into the studio by song’s end…

I agree with this review. My favorite track on Kelly’s CD so far, based on a day of listening to the stream, is “Irvine.”

  • Lu

I know it’s not related to today’s headlines but I wasn’t sure if people go back to previous days topics to post. I asked in the tour thread if someone in the know could tell me the difference in the format of the ai tour shows. I’ve only been to one and I’m curious. Hope it’s okay to post this here, MJ…

  • madaboutu

Good morning and thanks LisaB for giving us some headlines on this summer day.
I saw Kelly C perform on Leno last night, and I don’t know if it was because the crowd was so loud or just the song, but I did not enjoy it. She seemed to be yelling the entire song. I think it was Never Again but I couldn’t tell. I need to go and listen to it on Amazon or some other site to judge it, and the other songs on her album.

  • Lu

I feel like Kelly is screaming at me when she “sings” Never Again. I usually like Kelly’s music but that song is not my cup of tea.

  • bean99

Lu, I’ve only been to last season’s concert so don’t know the different arrangements. If I were able to go this time, I’d like to see it changed because 2 of my favorites were voted off 10 & 9 and would want to see a bit more of them mixed in.

I haven’t listened to Kelly’s album so can’t comment but do agree with the article that asked for lower ticket prices if she were to tour. I don’t go to any big venue concerts anymore because they’re just too pricey. I wanted to see Kelly and the Dixie Chicks last summer but wasn’t willing to fork out close to $200 for 2 of us to go.

  • star

Here’s some video from Paula’s b-day party with Jordin, Blake, etc.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_Pwgc60rr8

  • Lu

    Bean,
I agree it would be nice to have the performers mixed in some instead of having them sing and disappear. That was one thing I didn’t like about last year. I’d like to have seen maybe a few more duets. I enjoyed that at last year’s show – especially Chris and Elliott. Also, I really enjoyed the guys’ Patience number. That’ll be nice if they put more stuff like that in the show this year.

  • JP

Lu, I agree with you. When Kelly screams “Never Again” she reminds a little of another screamer – Janis Joplin.

  • squishy

I wonder why Janis Joplin’s screaming works for her but doesn’t work for Kelly? Both are fabulous singers.

Not a fan of “Never Again” but “Sober” is amazing.

  • NOLA

Re the upcoming Bon Jovi CD, “Lost Highway” ……..

Bon Jovi will garner the #1 position on the next BB200 chart.
This is a fabulous album. Congrats to Bon Jovi!

  • griz

I wonder why Janis Joplinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s screaming works for her but doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t work for Kelly? Both are fabulous singers.

Janis Joplin was one of the all time *GREAT* female blues singers of her generation. Kelly Clarkson isn’t in the same zip code as far as delivery and passion. Kelly is no blues singer – she’s all pop.

  • NOLA

    griz, I agree 100%!

  • Abilymom

Happy birthday, Randy Jackson!! This is your year to expand your vocabulary, I just know it!!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Kelly Clarkson isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t in the same zip code as far as delivery and passion. Kelly is no blues singer – sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all pop.

You must have missed her on Idol Gives Back, then. That was a chill-inducing performance full of “delivery and passion.” And when I saw her live, she was full of that “delivery and passion” that she supposedly lacks.

No, she’s no Janis (yet) but she’s not Britney either. Geez.

  • madaboutu

squishy…………..there are alot of screamers out there. Aretha and Patti are two others that come to mind, and people seem to respond as soon as a singer does this, have you ever noticed? Have no idea why that is. Maybe it signals passion to some people, I don’t know. I admit I myself react the same way. It is just that it seemed Kelly screamed throughout the entire song and now that I think of it, she did it in Sgt. Pepper too. I prefer her voice in softer stuff.

  • beachn

janis joplin’s sound had the affects of the
drugs she used as did much of the music of that
era. kelly on drugs would sound that way too.
    need i say more

    Sarah,
thaks for pointing out Kelly’s Idol appearance.
Kelly can sing any style she choses. She just
happens to chose pop rock at the moment.

  • http://airincaol.com coco

Who knows if someone is or isn’t on DRUGS when they are SANGing a song…….need I say more…..of course there are the obvious druggies but many conceal it.

  • griz

You must have missed her on Idol Gives Back, then. That was a chill-inducing performance full of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“delivery and passion.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ And when I saw her live, she was full of that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“delivery and passionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that she supposedly lacks.

No, sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no Janis (yet) but sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not Britney either. Geez.

Squishy was comparing the fact that is was acceptable that Janis Joplin’s screaming was acceptable and asked why wasn’t Kelly’s, and I made the point that Janis Joplin was one of the all time *GREAT* blues singers of her generation. There’s no comparison – Kelly is pure bread “pop” and should not be compared to a blues legend.

Kelly’s AI gives back appearance was good, but again, not in the same league as Ms. Joplin, as far as I’m concerned.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Kelly can sing any style she choses. She just
happens to chose pop rock at the moment.

    Exactly.

And MY point is that Kelly is not “pure bred pop.” She can sing whatever the hell she likes and quite incredibly in fact. That MIGHT be the reason why she won AI. Just maybe.

  • NOLA

Again, griz, I agree 100%. I guess you had to live through the Joplin era to understand.

  • squishy

I agree that Janis Joplin is one of the all time great singers but Kelly Clarkson can DEFINITELY sing her @ss off. I think she isn’t “just” a pop singer but definitely CAN sing the blues and rock.

  • NOLA

I have already pissed some off, so I guess I might as well piss everybody off……..

Comparing Kelly to Janis is like comparing Taylor to Ray Charles.
    There is NO comparison.

  • squishy

I didn’t say that it was “acceptable” for Janis Joplin to scream and Kelly not to. But I said that screaming “works” for Janis but doesn’t for Kelly although Kelly definitely can sing emotional blues.

An artist doesn’t have to be a “great” like Janis Joplin but still screaming works for that artist. For some reason IMO it doesn’t work for Kelly.

  • Lu

I’m glad y’all cant find me and smack me when I say – I like Janis Joplin even less than I like John Denver. Those that know me here know what that means… :)

Oh yeah, Randy – Yo Dawg Happy Bday… hope it’s HOT!

  • NOLA

Like I said, Lu, ya had to be there.

  • madaboutu

NOLA………..I doubt anyone is pissed off. I hope not anyway. We all have our favorites for different reasons from different eras.
coco……….the drug thing is so right. Ordinary people take drugs everyday both legal and illegal. I have tried to imagine touring and crossing time zones and being nice to people and worrying about your voice and trying to please everyone. Gah! That sure would turn me to drugs or drink. The 60′s though was a whole one extreme to the other.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

A few examples of what I like to call the different sides of Kelly:

The infamous drunk Kelly singing classic Guns N Roses with Metal Skool (language not suitable for the kids).

Kelly Clarkson singing “Cryin’” by Aerosmith.

Kelly Clarkson completely PWNING the competition on Big Band night, AI1.

Kelly Clarkson singing Tony Bennett’s “Because of You”.

    That IGB performance I mentioned.

Kelly and Martina doing “Does He Love You” at the Reba McIntire CMT Giants thing.

Kelly singing “Why Haven’t I Heard From You” at the same CMT Giants thing.

    Singing Ray L’s “Shelter”.

Singing Annie Lennox’s “Why” in concert. I saw this live and it was f’in amazing.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Oh, so because I’m young, I don’t know the difference between good and bad music. Nice. I’ll make sure to remember that next time I go buy any music. :rolleyes_wp:

  • NOLA

    (((((((((mad)))))))))

Sure, artists can attempt to sing like others. One example of that was Carrie Underwood. She is one of the greatest artists of this generation and yet, she couldn’t do Joplin.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=eZ-9e0irrAY

  • griz

Again, griz, I agree 100%. I guess you had to live through the Joplin era to understand.

Right Nola, sorta like you have to have “been there”…. Janis was pure brilliance.

Check out her version of Summertime with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Have mercy!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGJynZNr7rk

She was and still is considered amongst her peers and critics alike to be a MASTER interpreter of the Blues. Now whether you like the blues is another story.

    There is NO comparison.

I’ll agree with that, Nola! high-fives, girl!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Hmmm. I happen to really like and appreciate blues. However, the comment that you have to “be there” to understand something REALLY pisses me off. Just because I am young does not mean that I don’t understand shit.

And Carrie Underwood, one of the greatest artists of this (my) generation? Hmmm. I tend to reserve that judgement until the artist has MORE than one album under their belt. And FTR, I don’t think Kelly’s one of the greatest either. They both still have a long way to go.

  • radname

I wouldn’t classify Janis as blues either, and I don’t think Kelly is all pop, she has the ability to sing different styles very easily.

  • radname

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin #46 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

  • db

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure Brittany and Justinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fans will say the same in 40 years.

Meh. I personally hope they’re both forgotten in 40 years time, but I’m not holding my breath.

ETA: While I’m not a Kelly fan per se, I do believe that she has a great voice and if she chose to do so, she could probably blues up a song quite well and do it justice. Does that mean she’s on par with Janis Joplin? I don’t know; I personally haven’t listened to enough of Joplin’s music to even make a judgment call like that. But even if I felt qualified to make that type of a judgment based upon listening to her music or experiencing the “Joplin era” personally, that doesn’t diminish Kelly’s talent. That only illustrates a personal preference. You may not like how Kelly sings, or what she sings (Or maybe this is better stated, “How she is packaged and marketed.”), but she can sing – and that goes for Janis too. Appreciate them both as individuals; it’s not as if they’re facing off on AI, lol.

And I do agree with Sarah on this one: Youth is not tantamount to musical ignorance or a lack of appreciation for music of the past. If that was the case, I wouldn’t have Frank Sinatra, Otis Redding, or The Rolling Stones on my iPod.

  • NOLA

I have most of Elvis’ music and have collected since the ’50s.

    Nothing wrong with some bootyliciousness.

I just listened to Kelly’s entire album for the first time and I kinda like it. It put me in a mellow mood. It is better than Nora Jones’ last CD (which put me to sleep) and I think Kelly can definitely write music. There are a few songs where she could have used some help with the song writing but overall it is good.

My favorite is “Sober”. A Fantastic song. Least favorites are “Never Again” (it could have been an amazing song if it had a hook and the “scream singing” was a little toned down) and “One Minute” (too disjointed for me).

I think Kelly is at her best with more mellow/heartfilled songs actually ie “Sober” but at her worst surprisingly when she goes rocker chick or pop princess :ponder_tb:.

Hmmm. I’m old enough to remember, and I’m not really a Janis Joplin fan. And yes, I like the blues. There are other singers of that genre who I think are better, like Etta James for instance.

Janis’s voice grates on my ear. It’s not a matter of “being there” it’s a matter of opinion and taste.

BTW, I think Kelly could be an incredible rock singer if she had the right material.

  • squishy

I agree that Kelly could be an incredible rock singer with the right material. None of the songs on the “My December” album IMO showcased her potential to be an amazing rock singer though. I thought she was better at the “non-rock” songs. Perhaps the next one…

  • NOLA

I agree, mj. I see Kelly as more of a rocker.

Hmmm, hard to judge exactly since the sound quality of the recording of the Kelly performance isn’t anywhere near as good as the studio track from the Broussard video but from what I can tell, it sounded like Kelly held her own pretty well there. I’d love to hear a good quality audio of her performance.
