A swing? Hm.

Siobhan Magnus – Cape Cod Melody Tent

Siobhan played a headlining concert at the Cape Cod Melody tent last night and I was there. She debuted 3 original songs–Her first original was called “Hollywood Carousel”. It reminded me a little of a Pink ballad. The next song was a homage to the artist, Edward Gorey, called “Black Doll”. This song had a good melody and a hard-rock vibe. The third song was called “Scapegoat”. This one was mid-tempo–sweet melodic verses, followed by a passionate chorus. I will have a longer review with more photos up later.

Inside ‘American Idol’ Season 12 Negotiations

Despite these frictions, all parties reaped vast profits from the Idol juggernaut. Still, since Sillerman purchased 19, his company’s stock price has tumbled more than 50 percent as the show has suffered four years of ratings declines (despite this season-10 uptick).

Now CKx is being acquired by private equity firm Apollo Global Management for $509 million. According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Apollo is looking for a long-term TV deal for the show — a minimum of five years. But even though Idol flourished in its first season without Cowell, there’s no guarantee that its momentum won’t fade, and Fox reality head Mike Darnell is said to prefer an annual contract.

‘You May Not Kiss the Bride’ will open Sept. 2 at Pearlridge

Rann Watumull and the rest of the folks at Hawaii Film Partners are ecstatic because they finally have a release date for their locally made feature film “You May Not Kiss the Bride”: Sept. 2 at Consolidated’s Pearlridge 16.

The romantic comedy, which began filming here in early 2009, will then head overseas in distribution deals that will screen it in 200 Russian theaters as well as in Romania, Hungary, Canada and Latin America, said executive producer Watumull, a co-founder of the Hawaii-based film and television company.

“You May Not Kiss the Bride” stars actor-comedian Rob Schneider of “Deuce Bigalow,” “The Hot Chick” and “The Animal,” as well as Hawaii’s Tia Carrere, the actress-turned-singer who won a Grammy Award earlier this year.

It’s the story of a pet photographer — played by Dave Annable of ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters” — who accidentally maims a cat belonging to the wife of a Croatian mobster. He ends up marrying the mobster’s daughter, who is played by “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee.

EMMYS: ‘Glee’ Costume Designer Lou Eyrich

But after Eyrich started shooting the season finale in New York, she changed her mind — now her submission is that episode, just in time for the April 29th deadline. “It was just so fresh, different, and fun for me. We popped all the color, and there was such excitement from the adrenaline of shooting there. Ryan Murphy loved what the kids were wearing. He and the director were really excited, and some photos even ended up in People magazine. Another reason I chose it was that we had just one day to dress, fit, and alter everything and get it boxed up by midnight and sent overnight to New York. So it was one of the most challenging episodes. And we pulled it off.”

Um. Does CA and Jacob know this is their core audience and likely who’s going to be showing up on their tour? ;-)

Um. Does CA and Jacob know this is their core audience and likely who’s going to be showing up on their tour?

After having been to a few idol related events I must say that I think this is an oft-repeated idolism without a basis in fact. Sure there are grannys at idol events…but, truth be known, I see a lot of grannys and gramps at a whole lot of concert events, movies, out to dinner, amusement parks, cruises, resorts, etc. Since we, the grannys of the world, tend to have some disposable income it isn’t unusual to see us spending it once in a while and, believe it or not, we do like to be entertained. In fact the last U2 concert I went to had a disproportionate amount of over 50s in the crowd….and when I went to the latest X-men movie…I think the over 50 crowd was bigger than the under 25. Ya know, we don’t all curl up and fade away at 20.

While some Idols might be surprised at the amount of die-hard middle-aged female fans who do meet and greats and stay after to meet the buses for autographs, I still say that the majority at concerts are families of all ages with plenty of kids and teens. At least that is what I noticed at the Idol concerts I have attended over the years and this year I expect there to be tons of screaming tweens/teens for Scotty and Lauren (mostly Scotty).

After hearing over and over about Adam’s diversified audience, I became more observant of other concerts. U2 had a crowd of around 20′s, 30′s 40′s. Didn’t see any Granny’s. Same with Bon Jovi. Gaga were in 20′s and 30′s, Muse the same age group as Gaga. Adam, all the way from tweens to Grannys.

About the granny thing. Gaga had peeps of ALL ages there, many even older than 50 for sure. I was shocked. The thing was many were with their friends, or significant other, not with kids. This older couple in their sixties were by themselves all dressed like for a formal ball. They looked so cute.

Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am “blocks” new Cher Lloyd song

More bad news for X Factor pop star Cher Lloyd.

This week a demo of the singer’s brand new single Swagger Jagger leaked online for one and all to hear and received a mixed response. Now I hear another of her debut album tracks is in serious trouble.

I can reveal her collaborator Will.i.am is “holding back” the eagerly-awaited song in the wake of his client Cheryl Cole’s sacking from X Factor US. From what I hear it’s a big worry for Simon Cowell’s Syco team working on Cher’s debut album – who are desperate for the track to be included.

    LOL.

  • sagi

Well, the way I see it, if an artist is bringing “grannies” out to a show, he/she is doing something pretty amazing. To be scrutinized for being a “granny” and being at a concert says a lot about the effect of the artist to be brave enough and carefree enough to attend anyway! The only thing I see regarding older people is that they have aged, but I assume on the inside, feelings, excitement, love of entertainment, and life views are still as young at heart as the young’ns. :”)

  • Mel1

I hope Todrick gets his break soon. He is very talented. Too bad he was booted from S9. He would have made that season more interesting. I didn’t know he was from Texas. Where were his Texan fans to power vote.

  • mmb

I have to agree that the oft- repeated meme that idol fans ( the ones who attend the tour and buy the music) are predominantly female seniors is a bit overblown. It is unsurprising that, coming off a family- friendly tv show ( where the median age of the viewership is late30s/early 40s and skews female) that the fan bases have a broader age range than some other acts. And yes, the idol tour will attract more over 50 women than a Bieber concert. But this notion that everyone who attends the concerts of other current artists are teen-20 somethings is just wrong. I go to a lot of concerts – from current pop acts (BEP, Gaga, Katy Perry) to older established acts ( bon Jovi, McCartney, u2) and there are all ages at all of these shows.

  • Buffynut

Um. Does CA and Jacob know this is their core audience and likely who’s going to be showing up on their tour

Except that this isn’t true, in my experience. The Idol Tour is overwhelmingly little girls with their moms or entire families. It’s such a fun sight to see too. I love the Idol audiences!

ETA: The Gaga concert I went to had a very mixed audience, as far as age. It was predominately female though. I was surprised to learn, in that CeeLo review from the Rhianna concert, that the reviewer said the audience was predominately female. I would expect Rhianna to bring in a lot of guys. I think there is a statistic out there, that’s been quoted before, that says most Pop concert goers are mostly women. It’s only in the Idol bubble where that and age is seen as a negative. In the real world, everyone’s money is welcome.

  • Mel1

It is unsurprising that, coming off a family- friendly tv show ( where the median age of the viewership is late30s/early 40s and skews female)

I thought the median age went up by about 10 years (currently late 40′s).

  • artemis

Todays “grannies” are baby boomers who came of age in rebellious times when there was a cultural shift. There are so dang many of us that we still feel cool, no matter how younger people may view us. The music of our youth was awesome, and there’s still great music being made today, even though radio tends to play less of a variety than it used to. I’m not a grannie yet, but heading in that direction and I go to any concert I want-there are always others in my age group there.

Idol Tour concerts are a blend of young families with children, older couples, and women of all ages.

  • chili1000

This local reviewer loves Siobhan so it’s not surprising that he gave a good review. Even so, it sounds like she delivered as advertised. I agree with the writer re: it’s neat that she is using her “fame” to help advance the careers of others around her. Looking forward to what mj has to say.

Hey. Guys. Grannies. Gals. Just havin’ me some fun this lovely Sunday. I know that the tour will have all sorts of types. I went last year. And I suppose I myself would have been classified as older by many in attendance.

I’m certainly not saying that the Grannies of the world must all slink off into their wheelchairs instead of swinging from the chandeliers. Swing Granny! Swing!

    Re: The Hollywood reporter article.

Howcome I hadn’t understood that not only would A-Factor and Idol be broadcasted by the same channel, they would also be manufactured by the same production company?

Personally I don’t think that the shows are really competing, because the main competition is for the viewers and they are set to be broadcasted in different seasons. If X-Factor’s rating are low, it won’t be because a couple of months previously some other show had high ratings. (it would be because the show wasn’t entertaining or engaging enough.)

The audience won’t get saturated with Idol or x-factor alone, they are perfectly capable to watch reality singing talent contests all years around. Now, if merchandising would be a big thing, or the concert tours would overlap, then I could see the competition. Maybe the whole “competition” is made up only for FOX to pay less per episode for Freementle?

You are correct. The median age for the viewership for S10 was 47.2, up from 45.0 in 2010.

“American Idol,” once considered the hot show for young people, finished its first season 10 years ago with a median age of 32.1. This season, its median age is 47.2.

“Median age for American Idol has increased each & every season from 31.9 in 2002 to 45.0 in 2010.”

Median age is interesting but I would be interested in seeing the overall curve of viewership by age. My guess is a peak at 13 and a bigger peak at 50. My teenage daughters
used to like it but have moved on to grittier fare.

Ya know, we don’t all curl up and fade away at 20.

    XD
    Concerts I have observed:
-older and mainly female: Elton John, Neil Diamond, Adam Lambert
-Younger mixed leaning toward female: Switchfoot
    -Families & females: AI s9
-Older & Younger, 75% male tho: Linkin Park

i knew it! :D Funny none the less.

  • Fullmoon

If you go on pulseboard there is a whole thread on the breakdown on who dominates the people that go to concerts.

Gaga, Rihanna and most current female pop artists are mostly females 80/20
Katy Perry a lot of 13yr old teen girls.
Most male rock acts are dominated by females 70/30
    Muse 60/40 mostly males.

When I went to Daughtry concert it was 60/40 more females
When I went to Adam’s concert 60/40 more females. Ranging from teens to older. His international concerts skew teens, 20-30ys.

Out of all the male Idol concerts I observe Adam and Archie have the youngest fanbase.

Graphics design and execution for an album can take a long time. Better to get photo shoots out of the way so singers don’t later have to take time out of a busy recording schedule — and tour schedule in this case — and work on the album cover can progress as the production phase does so it will be ready and waiting when it’s needed.

  • Mel1

    SajiNoKami says:

What Adam concert did you attend? I went to numerous concerts and he had the most diversified audience I’ve ever seen. Many teens and 20s, yet all the way up to seniors.

  • Elliegrll

Out of all the male Idol concerts I observe Adam and Archie have the youngest fanbase.

I haven’t seen this for either of these guys. Archie’s older AI fanbase played a role in why his second album didn’t do well. The older fans were not going to support an album that they believed was geared towards pop or the teen crowd.

Being on AI introduces these people to a very diverse audience, so it’s not surprising that they would initially have fans of all races and ages.

  • girlygirl

I’ve been to concerts by Daughtry, David Cook, Kris and Adam. Of these four, I’d say Daughtry probably had the highest percentage of men at his gig. But all 4 guys had diversified crowds, probably 70/30 or 65/35 women, ranging from little kids to people in their 50′s and 60′s. From personal experience, I can say the people I hang out with when I go to one of Kris’s shows are mainly (although not all) women and range in age from early 20′s to mid/late 30′s. I think the oldest fan of his I’ve personally met is a woman in her mid-60′s.

  • Fullmoon

I haven’t seen this for either of these guys. Archie’s older AI fanbase played a role in why his second album didn’t do well.

I disagree with this. Archie’s second album didn’t do well because he didn’t have the backing of his label and had very little promo. Looking at his concerts domestically and Internationally he has a large young fanbase. Sure he has his share of older fans but ALL acts do. Concerts and album sales doesn’t go hand and hand with one another. I won’t even get into Adam unless you have seen all of his 125 concerts. lol

girlygirl, I agree. I singled Adam and Archie because they have a larger fanbase when it comes to concert goers showing up so of course there would be more of them. Daughtry doesn’t have a lot of kids and tween/teens showing up at his concerts.

  • McCreerian

WOW – that’s pretty early to be shooting pics for the album. Looks like UMG is going to rush Scotty and Lauren’s albums out before fall.

Archie’s second album didn’t do well because he didn’t have the backing of his label and had very little promo.

IMO, it had more to do with Archie’s young fans growing up and moving on. He had a huge teeny bopper fan base on AI who came out and supported his debut. But that audience is usually the quickest to move on to the next best thing. Archie himself was also growing up and not necessarily the cute kid from AI anymore. I can see both Scotty and Lauren facing that transition.

  • soverymel

it was at a casino, so that may have changed the demographic..

Well, yeah, that could make difference.

Even beyond the fact that the demographic likely to attend at a casino venue is older to begin with, I remember some of the casino venues had an age minimum due to state laws or something like that, which really frustrated the younger fans in those areas when they were announced.

  • goboywonder

IMO, it had more to do with Archie’s young fans growing up and moving on.

    That’s partly true.

Archie’s second album didn’t do well because he didn’t have the backing of his label and had very little promo.

This is the main reason TOSOD hasn’t done well in the US. Just look at the difference promo makes in Asia. There David’s songs are not only played on the radio, but they are on the top of the charts. A 4th single. the title track, has been released. IIRC, the album has reached platinum in Malaysia. There are articles from Asian countries that are not scheduled on his upcoming tour that are wanting him to include them. Here in the US, there are almost daily tweets from people asking, “Whatever happened to David Archuleta?”. Or tweets from people just finding out he has new music out. Or talking with people who got his first cd and were not aware that he had a new one out.

  • dy77

Yay for the new Kris song info! I am really looking forward to his album.

Dont feel sad for Lee he is just starting his US tour. Good times for Lee and fans.He has written 2 songs, and has some releasing from old label. He has also been talking about his next album. Its great to be a fan. Also cant wait to see him July 1st.

  • SajiNoKami

remember some of the casino venues had an age minimum due to state laws or something like that, which really frustrated the younger fans in those areas when they were announced.

Yeah he only did 2 casino’s here, I know he sold out the show i was at [3000]… the only all family venues we really have are massive stadiums, where idols live will be, not sure adam could sell that out yet. Maybe one of the theaters, but those are always booked.. then the clubs are 18 – 21+… so eh kids are out of luck here.
