Constantine Maroulis takes time, finds his voice on debut disc

Rather than rushing to put out an album fresh off of his run on “American Idol,” season four contestant Constantine Maroulis opted to take his time crafting his debut.

“I spent the last couple of years putting a little distance between myself and ‘American Idol,’” says Maroulis, who became known on the show for his smoldering glances and leather jacket-clad rock star persona. “There were so many great things that came my way after the show and things I wanted to experiment with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the main thing being to find my voice and the sound I wanted to accomplish on my first album.”……

‘Upfront’ ad sales show that network TV is still dominant
Commercial time is selling briskly, with buyers less worried about delayed viewing.

….The networks, however, are offsetting any decline in advertising dollars that result from lower ratings, because for the first time they will be paid for viewers who digitally record a program and watch it later.

Last year advertisers refused to pay for those viewers. But that audience could no longer be ignored, as about 17% of homes with televisions in the U.S. are now equipped with digital recorders. Advertisers will now pay for viewers who watched a show within three days after it was recorded.

Allowing that audience to be counted is likely to bring in additional hundreds of millions of dollars to the networks. The most popular programs tend to have the highest rates of recording and playbacks, so networks with the top shows will benefit the most…

… Many of the cable networks have not agreed to use the new system of measuring the audience for commercials. They are afraid the change will lead to substantially lower advertising prices. Not only that, but ad buyers are now more eager to put money on shows that deliver the most “impressions.” And those are largely network shows, such as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and Fox’s “House” and “American Idol.”…

    Daughtry – Borderline London

…”Daughtry” the album is released in the UK on the 13th of August with a single “It’s not over” hitting the stores on the 30th of July so Chris popped over to the UK with his band for a bit of promotional work, slotting in a London show in the process…

I must admit I did go along to the show more out of curiosity than anything else.Katharine McPhee was my season 6 fave but the “Home” track had grown on me due to it’s repeated plays on this years American Idol so I wanted to see what Mr Daughtry was up to.
As I said, it was a great performance and certainly exceeded my expectations.

During the show Chris mentioned that the band would be back in the UK later in the year so I’ll certainly do my best to catch Daughtry live again.

I would think that if the reviewer was paid, they would have been a Chris fan and not a Katherine McPhee fan.

Why would TPTB pay for review now? Daughtry has gotten their share of “the good, the bad, and the ugly” concert reviews just like everybody else. Why start now by paying reviewers off? That doesn’t make any sense.

It’s great to win new fans over at the concerts but how many new fans buy tickets to someone’s concert. I think they mostly get dragged there by friends, wives etc. Taylor still has to solve the problem of expanding his core fan base beyond the ones he picked up on idol. Although I guess he can make a decent living touring, selling CDs, books and T shirts to the solid group he has now. Hopefully they don’t run out of $ or interest in supporting Taylor for the next 20 years.

Kelly Clarkson’s current career meltdown is a study in the tricky politics of the music business. On one side of the aisle: a young singing star who wants to take the artistic reins from her seasoned handler. On the other side: the seasoned handler, Sony BMG chief Clive Davis , who wants his cash cow to keep cranking out the hits. The knee-jerk response: damn the suit, who values profit over art and would keep a budding songstress down in order to keep his revenue stream flowing.

But it’s more complicated than that……..

There have been classically trained singers in the past.

    American Idol: The Musical?

The press notes for the musical describe it as such:

Idol: The Musical is “a satirical musical comedy that focuses on the outrageous and delusional fan base of the hit television show. The musical takes place in Steubenville, Ohio where a group of dork-like students are preparing for their high school graduation after which they are determined to drag themselves out of the dregs of the middle-of-nowhere. There are eight of them; all belonging to the same cult-like club that meets daily in a barn that doubles as a shrine to Clay Aiken. They are actively ridiculed by the rest of Steubenville; a humiliating situation that doesn’t deter their quest for all things Clay. They are victims of A.D.D., Ritalin, their misguided obsessions and their innocent longing for their elusive ’15 minutes.’à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ …..

Yeah, one of the not fun things about being an adult is to compromise. Maybe meeting Clive halfway would have still let her get her point across and then maybe the next album push for what she pushed for this time. But what the hell do I know?

  • madaboutu

Well, I’m old, so I will give any of the idols the benefit of the doubt about their decisions. I’m not sure people in their 20′s always make the best decisions even with help, and are still trying to find their way.

    Could you be more specific..LOL

Taylor still has to solve the problem of expanding his core fan base beyond the ones he picked up on idol. Although I guess he can make a decent living touring, selling CDs, books and T shirts to the solid group he has now. Hopefully they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t run out of $ or interest in supporting Taylor for the next 20 years.

JPFan, you don’t have to worry your pretty little head over Taylor’s career. I look at it this way, better to have 500 who love you for you and be with you for the rest of your career than to have 5,000 who only love your hot cd and may not be around when your next one drops. Even Kelly is learning the reality of being an instant success and she is on her third cd.

Kelly Clarkson’s My December: Rumors Aside, LP Isn’t A Radical Departure
Singer’s controversial third outing has some aggressive, grungier songs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ but it’s not all rage and angst.

…And in a preview of the album on Monday night in Century City, California for a taping of “Nissan Live Sets on Yahoo! Music,” Clarkson joked about her label battles during breaks from rocking the stage with a powerful mini-set that boded well for the scaled-down tour she’s expected to launch later this year. (Check out a recap of the show.)

“It’s not about making people upset,” she said, referring to taking creative control of her album. “It’s about not settling. … Nobody wants a sequel to Breakaway, because sequels are never as good as the first one.”…

Two quotes that stood out for me from that Boston article on Kelly

Quality artistry and big sales aren’t mutually exclusive; look no further than Clarkson’s career so far, and Davis’s track record, for proof.

The most depressing part of all this isn’t witnessing the proverbial collision of Art and Commerce. It’s admitting — after cheering her declaration of autonomy and defending her right to self-expression — that Clarkson may be better at singing songs than writing them.

All I’ve got to say is, humility goes a long way. I hope Kelly finds some and relinquish her throne. There is nothing wrong with compromising. Especially when you’re new to the game…

Seriously, there was no way to surmise that she was drunk just from those pictures, and since there was no video with the article for me to watch and judge for myself, I figured it was a boatload of hooey.

But even if she were a little tipsy, who cares, really?

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

But Nanny, what happened to “good for Kat, so what if she was drunk, it’s Vegas baby?” ;) I agree with Abily, who cares if she drank (it’d be a different story if this were a concert she was giving, and she bombed out in front of young girls and their parents or something), but since she looked plotzed, I shall snark!

All Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve got to say is, humility goes a long way. I hope Kelly finds some and relinquish her throne. There is nothing wrong with compromising. Especially when youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re new to the gameà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

I think Kelly was being pretty humble about the whole thing. She knew it might not produce a bunch of hits or sell a million CDs, but it was important for her to make her CD this way. She’s said that if the album tanks, it’s her fault and hers alone, and she’s ready and willing to accept that. I think that’s very mature, and I stand behind her 100%. And frankly, if Clive Davis was concerned about his bottom line, he could have completely pulled the plug on this. As far as I’m concerned, by releasing the album, he and his supporters lose the moral authority to whine about Kelly costing Clive money. If he had that much of a problem with it, wouldn’t he have done something about it?

I am curiously waiting to see what the reaction is if Taylor, who sorry to say is no master songwriter himself, decides he wants to make a CD “his way” and has to go up against Clive and an army of Diane Warren-esque songwriters.

I think thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s very mature, and I stand behind her 100%.

Yep, she is..All the way down to believing that NA is nothing like SYBG..

Also, wanting something so badly that it is preventing you from seeing the forest for the trees is called stubborn, not humility.. No matter how good her words are.

if Clive Davis was concerned about his bottom line, he could have completely pulled the plug on this. As far as Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m concerned, by releasing the album, he and his supporters lose the moral authority to whine about Kelly costing Clive money. If he had that much of a problem with it, wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t he have done something about it?

Kat, Clive is a smart man. He may have a big ego but he is not stupid. He is not in the business for 40 yrs doing what he has been doing on a fragile ego. He seems to subscribe to the pholosphy, leave the a stubborn minded person alone and eventually they will hang themselve. As we are know seeing with Kat.

Just incase we have forgotten due to our blind hate for Clive, for whatever reason, Kelly came to Clive from a singing show, not as singer/songwriter.. There are artist in Clive’s stable who’s career he has built from the ground on up who have sold way more cds than Kelly and don’t have a problem co-writing or having other writers on their cd.

Mark my word, Kelly will be doing a lot of backpeddling in her own little way in the next few weeks. She will defend her actions, pretend that there was not any real feud between her and Clive. And claim tha this was all blown out of proportion, thanks to the media..

  • sexygirl

I am curiously waiting to see what the reaction is if Taylor, who sorry to say is no master songwriter himself, decides he wants to make a CD à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“his wayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and has to go up against Clive and an army of Diane Warren-esque songwriters.

I would say that only Taylor and Clive knows what type of cd he is going to make on his second go around. Kelly is not Taylor. And just like all the other artist in Clive’s stable, one hopes he treats all the Idols as individuals and not how we assume he treats them. Especially since we really don’t know anything more than what we feed each other and deduce due to our personal feelings about Clive.

Also, Lucky for Taylor that he’s already ahead of the game. He has two cds under his belt and Clive allowed him to have three of his own written songs on his current cd. So that shows some respect for his material which can only make Taylor feel good. Also, since his song-writing has received quite a bit of positive praises from the critics, somethig tells me he will be fine.

Plus, I don’t feel that Taylor or any of these Idols should be a snob about allowing other writers to be on their cds. Especially if they are new to the song-writing game. As long as the song fits their cd. I think it’s quite arrogant of anyone of them to feel that only their works belong on their cd. If artists who have been part of Clive’s world for so long don’t have a problem with adding other writer’s songs to their cd, then I cannot understand why a bunch of singers from a cheesey singing show all of a sudden think they are above anything Clive asks of them. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you..

    Sexygirl,

You make a lot of sense. :ponder_tb:

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Just incase we have forgotten due to our blind hate for Clive, for whatever reason, Kelly came to Clive from a singing show, not as singer/songwriter.. There are artist in Cliveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s stable whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s career he has built from the ground on up who have sold way more cds than Kelly and donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a problem co-writing or having other writers on their cd.

But this isn’t about what other artists want to do, it’s about what Kelly wants to do. This was important to her and I back her on that. I don’t care whether or not she’s a good writer, because I don’t have to buy the CD if I don’t like it. I don’t care how much money she makes or doesn’t make for Clive, because it’s not my concern, and since he let this supposedly career-killing album see the light of day, I’m assuming he doesn’t have that much of a problem with it, either.

What I DO hate about Clive is how he makes these bright-line distinctions between “art” and “commerce” as if no person who EVER came from a talent show could ever be a real artist. Which, IMO, is a bunch of malarky. How come no one rallied around Clive Davis when Bo was dropped from RCA? All the talk was of Bo going on to greener pastures and Clive being evil and horrible for trying to force Bo into a pop box when he’s really a southern rocker. He and Kelly both came from AI; why is Bo an artist if Kelly isn’t? Why is Taylor an artist if Kelly isn’t? Can you not be a pop star first and an artist second? You might not like Kelly’s music or songwriting, but I streamed the album today, and I do kind of like it. So I don’t think one opinion is enough to determine whether or not her songwriting skills are worthy of the term “artistry.” To me, her music comes from the heart, from her emotions, and that qualifies.

I guess I don’t understand why Kelly wanting to write her own material is bad when she’s not out there shouting out about how it’s necessarily BETTER than what other people could give her. A better representation of her as an artist, maybe, but not necessarily better lyrically. She’s not claiming that she’s as good as Diane Warren or Kara Dioguardi (songwriters who, IMO, suck, but are proven hitmakers). Everything I’ve seen seems to indicate that she’s well aware of the risk she’s taking, that she’s 100% prepared to accept the responsibility of failure, and that this was something very near and dear to her heart. Wanting to put out one product during her career, a product that’s 100% hers, without input or influence, renders her in need of a spoonful of humility? I hope not. Thinking that NA and SUBG are different songs renders her in need of a a spoonful of humility? The two songs have similar themes, but are also quite different in a lot of ways (one is a less melodic, more stream of consciousness tirade; the other is a hooky pop breakup song).

I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s quite arrogant of anyone of them to feel that only their works belong on their cd.

A musician wants to write her own music!Oh, horror of horrors! SNORT.

I’m going to take a break for a bit.

Nothing wrong with Kelly wanting to write her own material. The problem I see was her not willing to compromise particularly since it is SonyBMG that is footing the bill for the promotion of the CD.

Once her contract is up and if she wants to put out her own music without anybody telling her what to do in which she doesn’t have to compromise, then she can go the indie route. Until then, there is nothing wrong with a little give and take.

  • Kirsten

The problem I see was her not willing to compromise particularly since it is SonyBMG that is footing the bill for the promotion of the CD.

The artist foots the bill for the promotion of the CD. Cross-collaterization means there is probably a lot of money in Kelly’s kitty.

Once her contract is up and if she wants to put out her own music without anybody telling her what to do in which she doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have to compromise, then she can go the indie route. Until then, there is nothing wrong with a little give and take.

Clive has never been accused of being a shrinking violet. I’m sure that he has the wherewithall to stand up to Ms. Clarkson if he is so inclined. He can and has axed completely recorded CDs in the past. I’m sure that there was some and give and take between the two. There is nothing wrong with trying to get more take than give. That’s part of negotiating. Clive still has the whip hand.

Clive released the CD. His choice. He obviously decided that the possible gains exceeded the possible risks (afterall, he is said to be a good businessman and we all know he will get canned if he doesn’t at least try to make money for his shareholders). He may be a tad grumpy because he thinks he could have had even more gains if she’d recorded what he wanted, but he’s made the business decision to run with this one.

When I buy a car, I try to get the lowest price possible. When I sell my house, I try to get the highest price possible. I don’t consider either of these actions to be a demonstration of my lack of humility. I see them as capitalization in action. Nobody has to take the price I offer unless they want to.

If an artist is not willing to try to see their artistic vision fulfilled, they aren’t much of an artist. Kelly tried and she succeeded in getting her music on the CD. Clive let her do it. Who am I to complain if those two reached an agreement?

I may not personally care for Jackson Pollock’s works, but many people do. Who am I to say he would have made his art dealer more money if he’d stuck to the tried-and-true “Dogs Playing Poker”? I’m sure that the art dealer thought a time or two, “Why can’t this dude just paint a nice flower or a basket of fruit once in a while?”, but he stuck through the paint splotches because he figured there was some sort of market for them. Just as Clive has decided to release this CD.

Clive is not going to lose money on Kelly’s record. Typically the artists only gets 10-15 percentage “points” from each sale, and the label keeps the rest. (and the artist doesn’t even see that money until they pay the label back out of THEIR SHARE, so there you go. Don’t get me started on that one). So she doesn’t have to sell much at all for Clive to get what back what they put out. He just wants Kelly to make the label a huge profit like last time, and she’s saying he’ll just have to (possibly) settle with a modest one this go around. Big whoop. You won’t catch me crying for Clive. LOL.

  • jpfan

I’m not comparing them in terms of success, but Elliott said in an interview he rejected offers from majors to have more control of his music. He went with an indie and traded the support of a major for more control of his music. If Kelly feels unhappy with Clive, she will the opportunity to do the same thing and may be a happier artist for it. I wouldn’t normally cry for Clive either but the music business is in dire shape.

The label most certainly does NOT keep the rest.

I’ve seen rumours that Kelly signed a six album deal. That’s a long time to wait to have some artistic freedom.

She negotiated with Clive and got what she said she wanted. I don’t have a problem with people trying to get the best deal possible.

Sure, she won her contract on a television show, but I don’t think that means she has to spend 12 years of her life rolling-over and acquiescing to every one of Clive’s demands without any attempt at getting what she wants. The system gives her a little bit of leverage and she used it. I’m sure that she is aware that if the album tanks, much of that leverage is gone.

For those arguing that music is just a business, consider this exerpt from an article by Danny Goldberg of Artemis Records:

So let’s take our mid-level artist, and say that she managed to sell 200,000 copies of her latest CD. How does the artist make out? Based on a royalty rate of $1.40 per album, 200,000 CDs sold results in earned income of $280,000. However, before the artist buys her mom a car (or pays off her college loans), she first needs to deal with the dreaded recoupment. If our artist received a $25,000 advance and spent another $115,000 making the record, this $140,000 is deemed recoupable, which means that the label can collect that amount against royalties.

Also, let’s assume the artist received $70,000 in tour support (recoupable) and another $70,000 in recoupable video and promotional support (this is usually split between the label and artist). That adds up to $280,000 in recoupable advances, thereby canceling out the $280,000 earned by the artist on points from her CD sales. Royalty-wise, it’s a wash. (There’s a holdback for returns of 15-20 percent, but royalties for these à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“reserves” are usually paid out in 18 months minus any actual returns.)

Album royalties, luckily, are not the only stream of income for an artist. Artists who write their own material enjoy a tremendous economic advantage over those who do not. If an artist writes her own songs, she earns additional monies known as mechanical royalties. Assuming a mediocre .75 percent mechanical rate per song times 11 (a roundabout number of songs on an album), the hypothetical writer-artist would earn around 60 cents an album, or $120,000 on sales of 200,000 units. (Artists with a strong contract can get up to 85 cents in mechanicals per album-and these payments are all à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“from record one,” and not subject to any kind of recoupment.) Solo artists like [Aimee] Mann or [Michelle] Shocked also don’t have to divide royalties with other musicians, although they will have to pay managers, lawyers, and accountants (standard is approximately 25 percent of net income).

    http://www.rapcoalition.org/label_exec_$$_breakdown.htm

If the music industry is “just a business,” does Kelly’s behavior become more acceptable when it’s framed in terms of “counter-negotiating for a better rate of return,” rather than “being self-indulgent?”

Does the label put any money in the process of making and trying to sell a CD? Who pays for the producer, the mixer, etc when a CD is made? Is it the artist or is the label? So if the CD bombs but someone (according to Kirsten is the artist) footed the bill to promote the thing in the first place.

Then if the artist is in the “red” than I guess the artist could lose thousands of dollars while they were trying to promote something that ended up bombing. Where does that money come from if the artist doesn’t have it in the first place and can’t recoup it from sales since there were no sales if the CD bombs?

So what the hell does Clive care if Kelly’s CDs bombs or not? He isn’t losing any money if that is the case if all the money comes from the artist. That is probably why Clive allowed it to be released for he doesn’t lose any money if it bombs (nor does he make any money of course).

Now it makes sense why Clive allowed this CD to be released. No skin off his nose.

(For the record, I do not think that Kelly’s CD is going to “bomb”. I think it will sell fairly well actually.)

  • Kirsten

Then if the artist is in the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“redà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ than I guess the artist could lose thousands of dollars while they were trying to promote something that ended up bombing.

It is a little more complex than that. Ideally, the artist never loses any money, they just fail to make any money.

Nevada has explained this many times much better than I can explain it (and Kat provided a nice explanation from the Rap Coalition above).

If a new artist puts out an album that bombs, the record company loses the money that they advanced (just like if the bank loans a business money and it fails before the loan is paid back). But, the company can recoup the cost if they roll the dice and the second album that the artist makes is a success. Or, if the artist previously had a successful album, they held some of that royalty money in reserve in case the next album flops. This is known as cross-collaterization.

So, let’s say for the sake of argument that the holdback is 20% (I don’t know) and that Kelly makes $1.40 per album (using the number from Kat’s article…but I don’t know). She sold almost 6 million copies of Breakaway in the US.

    6 million x $1.40 = $8.4 million

From that, the company would have recouped the recording cost of her album, advances, promotional costs, tour support, etc. And they would have held some of the royalty money for cross-collaterization.

    $8.4 million x 0.2 = $1.68 million

That’s $1.68 million to offset the costs of recording, advances, promotional costs, tour support, etc for “My December”

Of course, I’m just making up these numbers (except the 6 million) and there are probably contractual caps and all sorts of nonsense I know nothing about. But, it gives you an idea of what we are talking about. (Nevada is probably cringing at this wild a$$ speculation)

Summation: Royalty money from album 2 is used to offset the risk for the record company for album 3.

Still, there are opportunity costs and Clive wants max money so he won’t be happy if “My December” just doesn’t lose money. He wants it to make a LOT of money. Plus, he wants some money in reserve for album 4.

Sometimes I absolutely love life. I mean REALLY LOVE life. First, the brilliant Paul Potts wins Britain’s Got Talent. Now this proud announcement. MAXIM called ***. My bloody month has been made.

One of the best parts about this little news item, which makes it even more priceless, is that it was served up so nonchalantly. Oh the naivety of youth.

I am reminded of a time when I was growing up. My familyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the parents, two older sisters, three younger brothers, and meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ were all sitting down to eat dinner. Steven, my youngest brother, proudly announced that he had learned a new song at school that day. Of course, he was excited and we all encouraged him to sing it. He smiled broadly as he stood up from his chair and began singing the following lyrics with the naive innocence of a 5 year old child:

Old MacDonald sitting on a bench
beating on his meat with a monkey wrench,
He missed his meat, hit his balls,
and pissed all over his overalls.

    GOOD–He learned a new song.
NOT SO GOOD–He learned the above song.

All at the dinner table held in their collective laughter.

    So…..

I suppose it is an honor, of sorts, that *** has been recognized as a bachelorette (along with Lisa Lampenelli and Condoleeza Rice, among others)

    BUT it is for MAXIM

No holding in laughter at this one.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    :lol_tb:

    Why she made the list:
We always knew she could sing, but somewhere between coming up short on American Idol and appearing on The Tyra Banks Show, she got hot. Plus, she has no problem being felt up.

    Drawback:
She was discovered by one of the most annoying shows on television.
