‘SYTYCD’ Judges Discuss This Week’s Shocking Non-Elimination

Speaking to reporters backstage immediately after the show, main judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed that the surprising decision was just as last-minute as it seemed on TV, and was made in the final minutes of Thursday’s live episode. “I called for Mike Darnell [Fox’s president of alternative entertainment] and Trae Williams, who is standards and practices, and said, ‘This is what we’d like to do. We’ve done it on ‘Idol’ before. I know we’ve never done it on this program, but it gives us another week for America to see [the dancers], get to know them, figure out who they want to vote for.” And thus, “SYTYCD” history was made.

Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’ controversy: Video production company says it was ‘blindsided’ by YouTube removal

Rebecca Black’s infamous music video for “Friday” remains pulled from YouTube due to a copyright claim by Black, as the saga surrounding the viral video continues to play out. ARK Music Factory, the company that helped Black create it, has fired back in a statement, claiming that they’re working to resolve a complaint from Black’s representatives.

The statement from ARK’s spokesperson is as follows: “We’re disappointed, having been in good faith negotiations with Rebecca Black and her representatives for months regarding any open issues. There’s been an ongoing, open dialogue with our company. So we were blindsided to get a Take Down Notice — with no notice — alleging copyright infringement instead of a call or email from Rebecca’s representatives.”

‘Glee’s’ Naya Rivera talks upcoming solo album: ‘I’m really excited’

It seems like “Glee’s” breakout star Naya Rivera is more than prepared for the hit show’s upcoming casting changes. The 24-year-old, who plays HBIC and sexually confused Santana Lopez, recently signed a record deal and talked to EW about what fans can expect from her debut album.

“I won’t have anything I’m working on until after the tour is over,” Rivera says. “So July 4th, when I get back home in L.A., is when I’ll hunker down and spend that whole month hammering out the details and the creative process of that. I’m really excited about that.”

Might I add that these guys put up a great American Idol season finale podcast this morning: http://www.smoresradioshow.com

I’m not surprised that the “no elmination” was a spur of the moment decision on SYTYCD. Cat looked genuinely shocked and even confused. It was like Nigel had to pull her back to her hosting duties, by saying her name. It was a good moment.

I’m loving these little talking snippets where David Cook says a bit about each track on the album. I don’t follow any other singers, so I don’t know. . .is this a fairly common thing to do to promote albums? Thanks to anybody who knows and can answer.

  • MBane

The second dance-for-your-life by the two boys was apparently just for show, though. So, the conspiracy theorists are 10% right.

I looked at my clock at that pint and they definitely needed to fill up some time.

I’m not sure how common it is as a whole but I know that David Archuleta did something very similar to intro his last album where they played a short snippet of each song and then David talked a bit about it.
I think it’s nice to have an idea of where the artist is coming from before you hear the album — can’t wait for June 28!

Spritely, I’m not following anyone else’s album drop either, but I did see a comment at DCO on that thread that Adele had done something like this.

I really like the idea – if the snippets were out (hint) they could have married the comments and the music – but this is still rather cool.

Listening to what David says about “We Believe” – I’m reminded that he wrote that with the same co-writers who worked on “Paper Heart” – and the Broken Records reviewer seemed to like that track.

His words: “We Believe” could be a second single Monster power ballad. If “Heroes” could be on commercials, then “We Believe” is ready for soundtracks.”

The Countdown is in Single Digit Territory – these little extras are a clever way to heighten the suspense. Heh. Like it needs heightening.

    IMO. Of Course

That’s a good gig for Siobhan.
Here’s an article about it from the Cape Cod Times.

  • songsungblue

That article highlights everything frustrating about Siobhan, IMO. She has management but no one can decide what direction she should go in? She’s STILL playing gigs a mile from her home? That’s not progress, that’s inertia. And it’s just sad that Siobhan equates fake blood with edgy.

Her manager’s website is so…rinky-dink, too:

    http://www.raine-man.com/

She is just spinning her wheels at this point, which is sad – she obviously has some talent.

Danny Gokey opens for Taylor Swift at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA

Looking forward to videos and pictures from Danny’s first opening on the Taylor Swift tour. I believe the show tonight is a stadium so should be a big crowd. I know for a fact that some of Danny’s fans who are regular posters on this site are attending so we should get good reports.

  • RightNow

Congratulations to Danny on opening for Taylor Swift. This will be great exposure for him.

This isn’t just a gig a mile from her home. The Cape Cod Melody Tent is a major venue that draws national acts.

From what I can tell, aside from the three who received contracts after season 9, Siobhan has remained the most active in moving forward with her singing career – even turning down an acting gig to do so. Headlining a concert at a major venue tonight, album coming out in November (at this rate her album will come out before Casey’s – talk about inertia!) In another article Siobhan’s manager stated that they sat down and worked out a plan for this year. They are now working that plan. I imagine her plans for next year include some kind of tour to promote the album. Criticize all you want, but this is a marathon, not a sprint, and I like the approach they are taking.

mj – I know you’re going to the show tonight courtesy of Siobhan’s fan site. I hope you have a great time.

  • ross

And it’s just sad that Siobhan equates fake blood with edgy.

True. Only real blood is edgy. Tonight she’s going to bite the head off a live chickadee, the state bird of Massachusetts.

Everyone has to start somewhere. This is one of the better gigs she’s had. I happened to mention that it’s a good gig, when I linked to the article. I’m happy for someone who gets exposure playing a good venue.

Disagree, but please don’t make it personal.

Not that they are in competition anymore, but Andrew Garcia has a very active career, playing gigs recently in Alaska, Vegas, Boston, Various California venues, and Canada and Australia. He has a new single out and an EP coming up.
The Cape Cod Melody Tent sounds like a great opportunity for Siobhan to perform and gain some new fans. I think it’s hard to get a music career going if you don’t live in New York, LA or Nashville.

Adam played there – of course it was on his Glamnation tour and it was during the regular season – the regular season looks like it starts next week, with Darius Rucker. Anyhow it’s a good summer venue.

I was never a Siobhan fan, tbh, but she’s a local girl and she seems very nice.

I was a sort of Andrew Garcia fan so I’ve been interested to see he’s gotten these gigs; I’d like to know more about how they operate but it seems like what used to be called a “revue” – where a lot of acts are presented at once.

Congratulations to Danny on opening for Taylor Swift. This will be great exposure for him.

I read that the venue for the Danny’s debut as opener for Taylor Swift tonight at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh seats 64,000+ and is sold out! Here it is picture of the stadium for tonight’s show:

What a great opportunity for Danny to be able to perform in front of a crowd that size….so happy for him!

  • girlygirl

Good luck to Danny as he starts his stint opening for Taylor Swift. This is a good opportunity for him.

Anyone know how long his set is expected to be? I thought I read that he’s the opener, then then is also a mid-level opener as well…is that right?

Siobhan happens to live in the biggest tourist town on Cape Cod and they are all tourist towns. That is kinda like saying if you live a mile and a half from the Metropolitan Opera, you shouldn’t play it. Where Siobhan lives is lovely, we should all be lucky enough to live there.

    Have fun MJ!

  • happyhexer

Looking forward to videos and pictures from Danny’s first opening on the Taylor Swift tour.

Same here. But may depend what kind of seats Danny’s fans were able to get? That is one big stadium. Still, at least we will get reports back. Can’t wait!

  • happyhexer

Anyone know how long his set is expected to be? I thought I read that he’s the opener, then then is also a mid-level opener as well…is that right?

Girlygirl, my guess would be about 5 songs, maybe 6? Maybe twenty minutes or so? But I really don’t know. Just guesstimating based on what he did with Sugarland last year. Oh, and yes, Danny is an opener. The mid-level opener is NEEDTOBREATHE, and I would expect them to get about 40 minutes, which is what Luke Bryan had as a mid-level act at the Sugarland concert I attended last year.

  • Mel1

When is Danny going to be able to finish his album if he is already touring? Adam has only had one concert since December, as he is working in the studio every week (except when he took a couple of vacations).

  • fuzzywuzzy

From the description on the CCMT website, the show appears to be a very nice showcase for Siobhan:

Since returning to the Cape following her appearances on American Idol, vocal sensation Siobhan Magnus has been developing a stage show combining all her musical interests. Her local band, Lunar Valve, will kick off the evening and feature Siobhan’s unique vocals on original songs written by the band. A Siobhan showcase will follow featuring songs Siobhan loves to sing, standards, hits and some of the songs which brought her to international attention during her TV appearances on American Idol, Ellen DeGeneres and The Letterman Show. The evening wraps up with a high energy, theatrical set with Siobhan and her favorite show band, The Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra, who will present “rock opera” versions of some of the biggest songs of Queen, David Bowie, The Who, Led Zeppelin and more.

I’m not a fan of her singing, but Siobhan seems like a nice person who wants to follow her own path. I wish her the best.

Anyone know how long his set is expected to be? I thought I read that he’s the opener, then then is also a mid-level opener as well…is that right?

There should be some good first-person reports on this one. In the stadium-scaled shows, it’s a longer overall show format and there are three openers.

I’m thinking today, Danny will be up second after Randy Montana and before NEEDTOBREATHE. No idea on number of songs, hoping maybe 5-6. Depending on how much talking Danny does, lol.

When is Danny going to be able to finish his album if he is already touring? Adam has only had one concert since December, as he is working in the studio every week (except when he took a couple of vacations).

Danny’s been writing, spending time in the studio, etc. since last fall. Once they choose which of the contending songs to record for the album, it may go fairly quickly from that point.

July thus far appears to be Danny’s busiest touring month. He’s got dates lined up off and on through August but not at the same pace as the second half of June into July. Finishing out June, Danny has two headlining shows this month, and his latest visit to the Opry. July has 10 dates with Taylor plus misc. other dates where Danny is headlining, and one where he seems to be opening for Joe Nichols.

Just four dates known in August, all headlining shows. He probably will add more concerts but that still leaves plenty of time for work on the album.

I wasn’t putting down her home town. I’m saying that she isn’t making a lot of progress with larger gigs in larger cities. I agree, she seems like a nice girl [although I could do without the screeching], but I think she’s lost a lot of momentum. *Shrugs* Whatever, I’m not about to worry on her career, or lack of it. I will say that Beatrice Dream was about the worst single and video I’ve ever seen. She could do MUCH better.

  • McCreerian

I just wish Siobhan would ditch her band. I think they are holding her back.

  • happyhexer

Anyone know how long his set is expected to be? I thought I read that he’s the opener, then then is also a mid-level opener as well…is that right?

More info: Apparently Y108 in Pittsburgh is reporting that Randy Montana starts the Taylor Swift show at 6:45 and Danny Gokey hits the stage at 7:15 tonight. So my revised guess is that Danny will have a similar amount of time — maybe closer to 25 minutes, though (factoring in time for the artists to change out on the stage)? Then NEEDTOBREATHE and Taylor.

This is double-hearsay, though, since I wasn’t listening to the Pittsburgh station myself, so YMMV.

  • macy

Tweet from Michael Sarver to Danny as he gets ready to open for Taylor Swift tonight:

@michaelsarver1: @dannygokey hey man! So proud of your success! Rock that stage like you know how tonight bro! Enjoy! You deserve it!

    So sweet!

  • happyhexer

I know nothing about what is going on with Siobhan, so I have no opinion on her situation. I’m sure she has more name-recognition than she did before she went on Idol, and if she’s performing, locally or not, that’s got to be a good thing.

That said, I do think it’s helpful when an artist has a good band supporting them. Danny is very lucky, because he has an awesome band. I’ve been to a number of his headlining concerts, and Danny and his band really complement each other. They interact well with each other, and always are high-energy and look like they are having so much fun. Oh, yes, and they are talented musicians as well.

No one told me @dannygokey was opening for @taylorswift13! Amazing!

Is Danny doing basically an acoustic set? I see the guy in the back playing the box but no drums or electric guitars.

Yes I believe Danny is doing an acoustic set. Not sure about length or number of songs yet. Will get more details later.

Good thing I put in the disclaimer about hearsay. From tweets I’m seeing, it sounds like the Pittsburgh radio station got the times wrong. Looks like Danny went on first. Also sounds like he got a good reception from the Taylor crowd.

Taylor Swift is class act. Heard she gave a shoutout to Danny and her other opening acts. Also heard the Pittsburgh concert was sold out and 52,000 attended. But LOL at the traffic jam afterwards. Looks like some video may be surfacing.

  • happyhexer

Apparently the Pittsburgh radio station wasn’t wrong after all. Randy Montana was listed to go on first, but for some reason, at the last minute, Danny went first. Not that anyone is going to see this since the threads are moving on. Just dislike being wrong, and sorry about the mix up.
