NEW ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Bucky Covington

With Bucky Covingtonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s arrival in Nashville, sightings of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ veterans along Music Row have become almost routine.

Thankfully, Covingtonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Country credentials are as real as they come and his singing is anything but routine. Growing up with his identical twin brother Rocky in Laurinburg, N.C., Covington was still a kid when he started listening to and imitating Tim McGraw, George Strait and Travis Tritt on the familyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s karaoke machine.

At 19, he heard guitarist Jeff Healeyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Angel Eyes,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and his fate was sealed.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The minute I heard it, I pictured myself on the stage playing guitar and singing,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Covington said. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“It was the best, warmest feeling Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve ever had. So I bought an electric guitar.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ……..

Sweet sounds: Randy Goodman assesses Lyric Streetà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s success

…Lyric Street has clearly done that over its inception, with a track record that includes 10 No. 1 singles and sales in excess of 19 million units.

The current roster includes powerhouse Rascal Flatts, Aaron Tippin, SHeDaisy, Josh Gracin, Bucky Covington, Trent Tomlinson, Marcel and Sarah Buxton.

While Flattsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ exceptional sales feats over the past couple of years have been well chronicled, American Idol Season 5 finalist Bucky Covington is now burning up the charts with both his self-titled debut disc and the single à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Different World.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ The full-length project is 2007à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s biggest unit debut from a new country artist as well as the best first week sales and highest Top 200 debut for any new male country performer since Billy Ray Cyrus in 1992.

Covington was featured last week on Good Morning America during its coverage of the 2007 CMA Music Festival. But Goodman adds Lyric Street wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the typical independent operation from the beginning…

Plus: Katharine McPheeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fans are angry about how a radio DJ treated her

…The angry calls and e-mails kept coming, and Kane shot back a lengthy response. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m getting increasingly frustrated by e-mails from McPhee fans that donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know the whole story and are writing me angry e-mails,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Kane wrote to them, scolding, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“It makes Kat look bad when ever other word in your e-mail about how you thought we didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t handle the interview professionally starts with an f—.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

He went on to describe in detail a scenario in which he said McPhee was pitched to the radio show on the condition that she appear live, that the appearance be pre-promoted, and that there would be no personal questions. You are there at the four-day CMA Music Festival

…Good sign for Covington

American Idol finalist Bucky Covington almost surely had sore muscles in his right hand after his first CMA fest.

“There’s a bunch of really strong country music fans here,” Covington said during a brief break Friday from his fourth two-hour signing session in two days. “You get to meet them from all different walks of life.”

Covington also worked in two performances, including an acoustic set that opened Friday night’s shows at LP Field. Immediately after, he hopped onto his tour bus and headed out for Philadelphia, where he had a show Saturday. “I get there in time to walk on stage.”

I’ve heard some people grumble that the city of Flint shouldn’t have given “American Idol” star LaKisha Jones a homecoming celebration Saturday.

Chris Daughtry Is Powerful Showman

Man, Ryan’s wrong about the ratings dip being Simon’s fault. Hope the PTB don’t think the same thing. Just go back to basics, AI!

  • squishy

I think that Ryan was making a joke on blaming Simon.

  • BlooregardQKazoo

“Man, Ryanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s wrong about the ratings dip being Simonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fault.”

Simon is at fault for the real reason ratings went down–an underwhelming top 24 almost exclusively r&b which he had 1/3 to 1/4 of the vote determining. Other mistakes in highlighting personality, people leaving way too early, and etc. were made, but it started w/ the talent selection lacking the something for almost everyone feel of AI 4 and 5.

  • squishy

Simon isn’t the only judge BlooregardQKazoo. There are 3 of them so if you want to blame the judges then blame all 3.

I personally think that a lack of diversity was a mistake but it is unclear whether they did have strong enough singers in other genres to make this past season more diverse. Was there a strong rock singer besides Gina? Was there a strong country singer? Who knows since we only saw what the producers wanted us to see. There may not have been.

I actually think that the lack of early investment in the singers who were actually there was more of a cause.

Longsong, Me think Ryan was just using the obvious to blame. Who were is really going to blame, TPTB. Simon was the best because he knows it really won’t go anywhere..

On another topic, I never got the call to bambard anyone because of how their opinion of a sitiuation. I know there were/are times I will read an article or two or three and notice the way the critics are treating Taylor but I vent on this blog. I really don’t have the energy nor the desire to go over to their site and send them any e-mails never mind wasting my money calling. I may leave a comment if the person was/is being straight up belligerent. Outside of that, it really isn’t that deep. In the end we have to except the fact that criticism comes with the territory.

The other two were blamed by implication when I said Simon was 1 out of 3 to 4 votes. And Nigel has one too in the final picks so he deserves fault as well. And there was diverse talent. They passed on Tami Gosnell who made the top 40 w/ a Janis Joplin like rock style. Her “whipping post” audition was strong and she had to have been better than Haley, Alana, and Antonella vocally in Hollywood Week–yet their cover girl looks won entry into the top 12 girls. The Brokenote Cowboy from the prior season made top 40 as well w/ a country baritone that would have brought variety and personality to a subpar male top 12. With Carrie, Kellie, Bo, and Chris doing well to outstanding, finding great country, rock, and other genre talent shouldn’t have been a problem for the judges. They either messed up in not selecting diverse musical talent or stacked the deck for their preferred genre.

Ryan and Simon are clearly good friends. Anything he says against Simon should clearly be taken with a grain of salt. Personally, I think Simon was a bit softer this season than he has been in the past. If anything, this season could have afforded a little more acid. It was somewhat lackluster.

meme, they always tape Friday’s show early but because of guest cohosts, they’ve been doing a lot of two in one tapings. Kim Coles was on today as guest cohost and is going to be the cohost on Thursday’s. So, since she was there today, Thursday’s show was taped today.

  • sammy

Just listened to Blake’s interview at the same station as the Kat interview. He really did a good job. That station should definitely not let the interns do the interviews.

  • squishy

That link for the Kat interview doesn’t work.

  • sexygirl

I don’t know what on expect from these DJs. Yes, some can be quite obnoxious but it’s a matter of rolling with the punches. Kat is still very much at the infant stage of her career. No matter how great her PR people are at spinning things about her, if she starts creating enemies amongst the DJs, that will not bode well for her music career in the long run. DJs are known for trying to bait artists but it’s a matter of rising above it. Sometimes it’s not as bad as we think.

Just saw Rayan’s face on my MSN page. I say all of this is a typical AI stunt. Everyone knows AI loves controvercy…Ryan is just doing what he does best. Don’t be surprise if Simon response with something sarcastic to push this “shocker” along..

  • pj

    http://www.hot995.com/cc-common/podcast/single_podcast.html?podcast=kane_guests.xml

Yes, the interns aren’t that great, but Blake did a good job. I do agree that the obnoxious morning DJ’s are probably the norm and that the Idols should be prepared to handle whatever comes their way.

Maybe at Idol Camp they should have a class on how to handle the press.

  • http://InternetExplorer DianeRN

Last weeks lesson on Flav of Love Charm School was learning how not to take the bait from the press. Always stay focused on your career or job. Some contestants failed miserably.

  • squishy

Blake’s questions weren’t too bad. Kat’s were worse but I thought she did fine actually. She just answered what she wanted to answer and didn’t get mad. The commentary makes her out to be someone who was seething but I didn’t get the impression. Chris was interviewed by the DJ not the intern and I thought he got the most invasive/obnoxious question of all particular since it was about his wife.

    All 3 idols did well.

Here’s another Blake interview with OutQ, a show on Sirius geared towards gay people. It takes a few seconds of commercials before it begins. These radio hosts said a lot of shit about Blake throughout the season and before and after the interview; they also dissed Clay after the interview. The after interview stuff is after the commercials in the middle.

Funny that they forgot to say any of this stuff to his face. My point – a lot of radio hosts are losers who hide behind the mic. It’s enough to make me respect Howard Stern.

On the other hand, the contestants are in the entertainment business; both them and their fans need to develop a tougher skin about these things. I’m not about to call every radio station or media outlet that said something bad or unfavorable about Blake.

THERE’S a civil war among the Claymates in Claynation. Clay Aiken’s rabid fans – who call themselves “Claymates” and say they live in “Claynation” – are at odds with each other over their former Idol. An insider said, “The war is between the batty members that are still clinging to their heterosexual fantasies of him and others that don’t harbor such illusions.” Aiken’s sexuality has been a subject of speculation ever since several men came out publicly and said they’d met him in gay chat rooms and had relations with him. Aiken has always refused to discuss his inclinations. The Claymates’ clash got so bad that the Official Fan Club at clayonline.com completely suspended its message board and noted, “Due to reports of extensive unrest and disrespect amongst members that has been carrying on for several weeks, the Official Fan Club Message Board will be shut down until further notice. Please note that should tensions continue on other areas of the fan club, severe consequences may occur.”

    STARBUCKS LAUNCHES TALENT COMPETITION

Unsigned Bands in New England Area Will Compete in American Idol Style Contest
    June 11, 2007

Now that they’ve got Paul McCartney’s career back on track, Starbucks is ready to take on American Idol.

With their splashy promotional campaign for the ex-Beatle about to land his new album at the top of the charts, Starbucks is planning an unsigned band competition in the New England area, according to Digital Music News.

The Starbucks Music Makers Competition will loosely follow the structure of American Idol, by soliciting music through an online destination powered by Boston-based web site Sonicbids. The promotion includes an in-store awareness campaign to encourage aspiring bands to upload their materials online through the site. The contest phase will last 10 weeks, featuring in-store promotions as well as recommendation and music-focused community startup Goombah, which will allow fans to vote thumbs up or thumbs down on contestants through its radio platform, integrated into the Starbucks destination.
