David Archuleta Speaks for Children Uniting Nations

David Archuleta speaks at the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Children Uniting Nationsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 4th Annual National Conference held at The House Capitol Building on Tuesday afternoon (June 9) in Washington, D.C.

The 18-year-old American Idol alum tweeted after the event, saying, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Just had a press conference for Children Uniting Nations. Such inspiring speakers. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m so tired though! couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sleep.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Speakers included Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Children Uniting Nations founder Daphna Ziman.

For à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Voting Early and Often

Their success will also depend on their ability to inspire legions of fans to devote hours to sending blocks of votes into the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ polls. But the growing role of block voting also threatens to disenfranchise the viewers who are some of the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s most fervent fans. Just how big those block-voting efforts can get was demonstrated by Erika McMahan of Conway, Ark., who with two of her friends sent in 11,700 votes by text message on the final night of this yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idol.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

That such practices are having an outsize effect on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ results is the obvious conclusion presented by a strange anomaly that has grown over eight seasons of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Even as the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s audience has declined in recent years, the number of votes being cast has risen sharply.

Adam Lambert in His Own Words: Sexuality, Kris Allen and Life After Idol

It was the conversation he could only have with us.

“Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler,’ ” Lambert said. His patience paid off with a cover story in our latest issue (check out exclusive video of his cover shoot), and here, in his own words, more from Vanessa Grigoriadis’ conversation with Lambert à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ his true thoughts on his Idol experience, his future in music and why he refuses to hide his sexuality.

‘Idol’ Runner-Up Adam Lambert Signs With 19 Recordings/RCA

Adam Lambert’s bad luck apparently begins and ends with losing “American Idol.” The 27-year-old has signed a record deal with 19 Recordings and RCA Records and is prepping his debut album for a fall release, 19 Entertainment announced Tuesday (June 9). The news comes one day after the company announced that ‘Idol’ winner Kris Allen signed a similar record deal with 19/Jive Records.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve come to a creative and collaborative partnership and look forward to developing a really exciting album,” Lambert said in a statement. “We are 100% on the same page and are all anxiously awaiting the start of the recordings.”

“It’s going to be ridiculous!” adds Lambert. “Get Ready!!!”

Adam Lambert: Gay As He Wanna Be

The most ludicrous American Idol contestant ever, Adam Lambert, has finally come out of the closet. In a cover story for Rolling Stone! All of America’s gay boo-boos are now healed, or something.

It’s great that he’s out and unabashed about it. Well, at least unabashed about it now. And whether or not he was under contract from the Idol people to be tacit about his boning preferences, he still could have said something. But he didn’t! Because, he didn’t want to be like his lame gay Idol enemy Clay Aiken. He told our best friend Vanessa Grigoriadis:

Rob Zombie: Adam Lambert Is No Mick Jagger

Adam Lambert may have a great voice. He may have even performed with KISS during the American Idol finals. Heck, Queen has even said they want the young, guyliner-lovin’ singer to front the band.

However, all that praise and good fortune doesn’t make Lambert a rock star.

So says metal rocker Rob Zombie.

“I’m sure Adam can f–king sing 10 times better than Mick Jagger, but who gives a s–t,” Zombie told me the other day. “He ain’t f–king Mick Jagger. You know what I mean? There are probably a million guitar players in the world better than Keith Richards, but they ain’t f–king Keith Richards!”

No surprise, but Zombie doesn’t exactly tune in to American Ido

Adam Lambert comes out to Rolling Stone, and a change has come indeed*

LAMBERT The days of “don’t ask, don’t tell” are over for Adam Lambert. Rolling Stone magazine has posted a preview of the cover story in which Lambert unabashedly confirms his homosexuality, and the excerpts online indicate that, from this day forward, this season’s groundbreaking “Idol” expects the media and his fans to accept him for who he is, with neither scandalized whispers nor rainbow flag-waving rallies of support.

By making his calm, cool and collected stand in this particular magazine, Lambert indicates where he’s going next as an artist and a celebrity. Striking a hot pose in a space more accustomed to the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kid Rock, the singer claims a spot for himself as an openly gay man within mainstream rock ‘n’ roll, which has always tempered gender-bending with heterosexual machismo.

Rhinestones & Rolling Stone, finally (plus a sneak peek from Ferras about Adam’s album)

We ran into an old friend of Adam’s last night at Hollywood’s Hotel Cafe. Ferras, an out singer-songwriter whose “Hollywood’s Not America” was featured on last season of Idol, is writing a song for Adam’s new album. “Hopefully he will open up some doors for others to follow,” Ferras told Out. “I think weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re very fortunate to have somebody like Adam who the world has gravitated to because of his sheer talent. But ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s also time. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nothing new. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just finally happening because of the vehicle of 40 million people watching the show. I do think it says something that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s getting all this press. And ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s because heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s great, but ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s also because he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t give a fuck. He is who he is, and thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s something thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s very novel à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and respectable.”

Susan Boyle Preps For ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Tour

Fresh off her stint in the Priory mental-health clinic, “Britain’s Got Talent” runner-up Susan Boyle is getting set for a 20-date tour with the reality show.

Following her encore performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” during the “BGT” finale on May 30, the Scottish singer entered the clinic, raising questions about whether she would miss the tour entirely. But Boyle checked out Friday, returned to her home in West Lothian, and the U.K.’s Daily Mail is now reporting that she arrived in London on Monday to begin tour rehearsals.

According to the paper, Boyle received 24-hour care from Dr. Sarah Lotzof, a private physician who accompanied the singer on a flight back to London from Edinburgh on Monday.

Dance this way

Utah dancers Brandon Bryant and Randi Evans knew the show they were auditioning for, one of television’s highest-rated reality shows, isn’t called “So You Think You Can Be Timid.”

Both auditioned for earlier seasons of Fox’s dancing competition, “So You Think You Can Dance,” and both had been cut because, they claimed, they were each a bit too shy for the judges.

So Bryant, 19, and Evans, 23, stepped it up for their latest auditions and their tenacity and new-found vigor paid off. Both made it into the group of 20 contestants who will kick off the show’s fifth season by performing live tonight at 7 p.m. on KSTU Channel 13. The first results show airs at 8 p.m. Thursday

And Rob Zombie? Seriously?! I cannot wait to get the issue, and I cannot wait for Adam to start working on, you know, HIS ALBUM. I bet he won’t get to play on 20/20 (or any other show: is that TPTB forbid him going on Jimmy Fallon, Conan, etc. till after the Tour?), but it would be great to hear him sing and not discuss his homosexuality (b/c he went on Idol to SING, not to be GLADD’s spokesman). Not that I don’t think he is incredibly HOT, b/c I do.

Hey, here is more of the interview with Adam from RS. What he says in this piece about discrimination is really interesting (and funny but sad).

    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/28577050/adam_lambert_in_his_own_words_sexuality_kris_allen_and_life_after_idol

He also talks more about his relationship with Kris and Allison — awwwww…

One part that confirms for me that he knows what he’s doing:

    On life after Idol:
I’m hopeful. I have a great opportunity right now. There are a lot of people who want to work with me that I really respect. And hopefully it works. I’m not cocky because I’ve seen a lot of guys come off this show and bomb, so I recognize that I could crash and burn. But if I play it safe, it’s not going to work, so I might as well go for it with the same intention that I had on the show.

  • relyec

Since when has anyone said ADAM is MICK JAGGAR?? ADAM IS ADAM and not a rock singer but an artist all of his own, unique! CAN”T WAIT FOR THE CD!!!!

  • Sunn

From the RS Adam Lambert in His Own Words: Sexuality, Kris Allen and Life After Idol

    Two interesting quotes:

    On experiencing discrimination:

A few years ago, I did a musical with Val Kilmer, The Ten Commandments at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. I was finally personally awakened, wearing nail-polish, feeling attractive and comfortable in my own skin for the first time. We’d go out sometimes with Val, and it was the first time I’d ever been around a celebrity à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ it felt really fabulous. One night, we hung out at his house and Sean Lennon came over to jam with us. I was like, John Lennon’s son? This is the coolest thing I’ve done in my life. But I had a lot of problems with the people putting on the show. One day, the director pulled me aside and said, “Can you turn it down? The producers are a little uncomfortable. It’s a little too … gay.” I was like, “Um, are we doing a musical here? I’m sorry, there are fags all over the place, dude.” It was very upsetting.

    On making his sexuality public:

There are so many old-fashioned ways of looking at things, and if we want to be a progressive society, we have to start thinking in a different way. There’s the old industry idea that you should just make sexuality a non-issue, just say your private life’s your private life, and not talk about it. But that’s bullshit, because private lives don’t exist anymore for celebrities: they just don’t. I don’t want to be looking over my shoulder all the time, thinking I have to hide, being scared of being found out, putting on a front, having a beard, going down the red carpet with some chick who is posing as my girlfriend. That’s not cool, that’s not being a rock star. I can’t do that.

  • Mary102

Rob Zombie ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t no fà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’cking Adam Lambert. And thank God for that! What a sourpuss!

Quotes like the one from Rob Zombie really make me think people ARE starting to ride Adam’s coattails ;-) When he first said that wrt Clay, I thought it wasn’t quite fair, but now, it seems like the cool thing to do is make headlines by making a disparaging comment about Adam.

  • noctem seizure

Slightly tangential, but can Idol fans– whichever one their a fan of– please stay out of the Defamer/ Gawker/ D-Listed/ Idolator/ Deadspin type blog comment sections when an article is posted about their Idol? Because the run-of-the-mill commenters at those sites are UNIFORMLY HILARIOUS, regardless of whatever kind of blog entry they are commenting upon.

Seriously, every single commenter on those threads should be a professional comedy writer. In fact, the next time there’s a writers’ strike, just track all of those peeps through their IP addresses, hunt them down and round them up, and bring them to LA to fill in as scabs, so we can still keep decent TV shows on the air and not the third iteration of “When Celebrities’ Animals Attack” or similar reality programming garbage….

But, anyway, whenever there’s a blog post about about an Idol, almost like clockwork, some avenging-poster or posters from a fanboard invade and disrupt the flow of snark. And that just kills the comedy buzz I have going from reading all the hilarity goodness….

Two thumbs down for you, Rob Zombie.

So Rob Zombieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s points are that Jagger is a terrible singer and Richards sucks on the guitar?

Maybe so although Zombie’s wrong yet once again. Jagger, Richards and Lambert are all fantastic in their individual ways, as I’m sure you would agree. My favorite band has always been the Stones but I have made room for Adam in that list of top performers, because he deserves it. His voice is like budda!

  • TKat

This was also in the new RS interview. lizardino thanks for poting the link!!

On his early attempts at songwriting:
My songs were like campy, sexy electro, like Peaches and Goldfrapp. I can look back now and realize I wasn’t very good at it. I was trying to put in way too many words. I was trying to be way too melodramatic and serious, you know? It’s like what a junior high student does with poetry. But over the course of a couple years, I started really trying to listen to what worked out there in music, like hooks à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and realized that less is more. The simple idea is better in a song.

On where he wants to go musically:
I want to do something that has theatricality, a nod to the glam rockers that I love, but is also contemporary. It’s not all going to be happy-go-lucky because I think it’s important to explore other emotional parts of yourself as an artist, but there’s a time and place for it.

I was pleased (and surprised) to read this. Most people are so self-aware. And this makes me more optimistic about his album.

The increase in block voting is of course because people are figuring out ways to vote more and more often. As I have noted there are now ways for people outside of the US to vote though I suppose that is a smallish number overall unless they are all block voting too. A “friend” of mine, ehem cast about 400 votes for one David Cook in Season 7.

If you move to online voting, for example, I wonder if that is easy to manipulate, or easier to spot or block “block voting” but even more importantly does Idol care? 100 million votes sounds more impressive than 10 million.

TKat à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ I have always thought of Adam as really savvy about the music and entertainment business. He knows what he has to do and is prepared for it. I’ve heard some idol fans say they want to go back to the “find people with no previous experience” approach to finding new contestants, but I completely agree that one of the best things to happen during the evolution of Idol has been to find more and more savvy, smart, professional musicians. Above all else, I want talent, I want people who are good singers, performers, etc. I don’t have time to wade through wannabes who don’t have much ability to begin with (and there are plenty of those who crack the top 10 every year).

I also love those quotes from Adam because they really suggest someone who has been through the ropes, stumbled, fallen, found his way, still needs some guidance and collaborative help, but understands what works and what doesn’t. Also, I completely agree with his “less is more” comment – very true of music – some of the best songs (and certainly some of the most successful) are surprisingly simple.

I also hope he continues to stay close to Allison – I think she will need his help more with all this new found attention!

Rob Zombie is only saying what the harder rock and alternative types say about Adam and say about Idol and will continue to say. This is why few if any Idols will get radio play on rock and alternative format radio play though I am not sure it’s that big a share of the market anymore.

The rock crowd believes that you hone your chops in the garage, literally or figuratively, with a band, probably several bands, usually starting as a teenager, even Freddie Mercury started up his first band when he was 13, and then perfecting your craft on bar circuit, ducking beer bottles, and then you make records, and then you are ROCKSTAR.

I think the objection is to calling Adam a rockstar as many Adam fans and some of the media are.

You can say he is a talented singer and entertainer and even Rob Zombie and Gene Simmons would not disagree. Rockstars are picky about who qualifies for the title.

I’m glad Susan Boyle gets to go on tour. Poor girl. Hope she enjoys this wonderful opportunity.

I think Adam, Allison and Kris seem to be clear on a general direction of their music. For some reason, all 3 seem more confident at this point about their future. I see success for all 3. (and success to me is making a living doing what you love)

Rob Zombie made me laugh. Adam can sing better than Mick, but I see what he’s saying. But if had paid any attention to Idol, and all the press that Adam got after every single performance, then he’d see that Adam is famous for being Adam. Just like Mick is Mick and no one can be him. Adam grabbed headlines weekly for his talent and performances. He became a sensation because he “did his own thing”. So, I understand what Zombie was saying and know that Idol is looked down on because of this. But he doesn’t have a clue as to why Adam got the press and even the RS cover.

Allison’s press release is so awesome. They were going to sign her no matter what. They love that she is edgy, spunky (big personality Simon) and a power voice. She stood out from the beginning and that’s why they are so stoked to have her.

    Remember Danny Noriega?

    http://tvwatch.people.com/2009/06/10/remember-idols-danny-noriega-check-out-his-music-video/

    While American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s recent MVPs Kris Allen, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta all announced record deals this week, season 7à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Danny Noriega is making a move of his own by posting a music video on YouTube for a song is called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“24/7à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ as in, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m on the radio 24/7,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m on your TV 24/7,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m on your Internet 24/7à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m at the disco 24/7.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Yes, those are lyrics to his song, in which he also declares, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care what they say about me / I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care what they think / Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m no American Idol.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Danny missed Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s top 12 on season 7 of the show, but later sailed away with Rosie Oà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Donnell on her R Family Vacations cruise.

In the song, which opens with Danny saying, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“This is going to be TMTHà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (too much to handle), Danny boasts about being at other VIP spots, including Studio 54, asks à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to buy my drinks?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (the answer is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“you bà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ -!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ) and declares his love for haters and the paparazzi.

But the best lyrics come later during his rap when he says, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Let me see you get in the top 10 / I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even know how you got in / FYI, for your info / you make me LMAO.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Now, what would Kara DioGuardi have to say about that?

If Cook and Daughtry who at least write most of their own music don’t get accepted by the rock community, Lambert never will. I mean Kara is working on his album or maybe that’s Allison’s album. That won’t be very rock either.

  • Hazehel

My songs were like campy, sexy electro, like Peaches and Goldfrapp.

I don’t think I will like his songs if he isn’t going to do them like Peaches or Goldfrapp. The only Goldfrapp songs I like are the more folkish one like Clowns rather than their more usual electropop stuff (which isn’t very good IMO). I can totally see Adam singing Peaches type songs, which is a problem because I can also see that I’ll get a headache just listening to those songs. I’d be much happier if he had said electronica of the likes of Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, or Air, or more dance and glamrock like The Scissors Sisters. As it is, we’ll just have to wait and see what kind of music actually makes, but I am preparing myself to hate his music.

Now now, Mick was pretty cute and sexy in the heyday of the Stones, in the 1960s, [many still find him sexy?] as was Keith Richards actually. I can see why the girls might have preferred the bad boy Stones over the good boy Beatles.

Personally I’ve always like Keif better than Mick and I like him still, craggy and all, but I have a thing for guitarists as opposed to lead singers. And I’ve always seen Keif as the creative drive behind the band. Gotta love a guy who brings grannie on tour.

Rock and roll takes its toll. Bwah.

Aww MJ…so sorry didn’t mean it the way it sounded! I like it here alot! :)

Yes, the NY Times is a little late with this story but their article makes a number of valid points, including this one:

A belief by viewers that their participation is meaningless if they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t cast votes by the hundreds or thousands could limit their interest in the show.

I think the claims by people that they cast 10,000 or 12,000 votes at a crack have permeated the consciousness of the public at large and the perception is already out there among the casual voters that their votes don’t count. I think this sentiment will only succeed in driving viewship down even further and maybe that will finally prompt some much needed voting changes.

No one’s asking for a recount or anything like that, and the best three all got their contracts and will make albums this year, but the voting rules need to be fixed. It may not happen next year, but I believe it will happen eventually.

This is precisely the problem with Idol – and I say this as a fair, logical and practical person, not as a fan of the “guy who didn’t win”. Nearly 12000 votes from three people, seriously?! From the very first time I watched the show (auditions, season 1) I was of the opinion that allowing unlimited votes is a recipe for chaos and a huge amount of inaccuracy and unfairness (is that even a word? It’s still early and I’m really tired!). I say, limit the number of votes per phone number to less than 10!

  • TKat

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve heard some idol fans say they want to go back to the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“find people with no previous experienceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ approach to finding new contestants, but I completely agree that one of the best things to happen during the evolution of Idol has been to find more and more savvy, smart, professional musicians.

I agree, I want to see people on AI who have the potential to be Idols but need exposure. I always thought that Adam having been in the chorus of Wicked and an understudy, made it a bit like an old 1930′s Hollywood Movie. Even though Adam is clearly more savy then the vast majority of contestants, I do not believe he is close to the most experience contestant ever on the show.

The idea that AI ever is a platform for taking a raw, untrained talent and making them a star, is for the most part a myth. Fantasia is the only winner who didn’t have much experience prior to being on Idol. This year, of the Top 5, Danny was the one who had no professional experience and no formal vocal training. I think that I’ll stick with the contestants with formal vocal training and some professional experience.

Here’s my take on a few of the winners and #2′s:

Kelly Clarkson had years of classical vocal training, had recorded a demo and was seriously pursing her musical career before she auditioned for Idol.

Justin was one of the most experienced contestants on AI — and he was on the first season. His musical career started at 4 when he was accepted by the Atlanta Boy Choir, one of the worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s finest boy choirs. He also has loads of high school and college theater credits, studied vocal performance and theater studies at the University of the Arts (Philadelphia) and the School for Film and Television (NY). He worked briefly on Broadway and was recruited by Broadway scouts to join the cast of The Lion King in their master classes before successfully auditioning for American Idol in April 2002. Shortly after being chosen for American Idol, he was offered a role in the Broadway production of The Lion King and he also had a contract offer from an independent record label.

Ruben majored in voice studies at Alabama A&M, sang with a jazz and R&B band and had recorded several demos.

Carrie performed in NSU’s Country show for two summers and was in numerous beauty pageants before Idol.

Taylor had an extensive professional career and recorded two albums before he auditioned.

Jordan participated in and won a number of talent competitions as Sprite Rising Star, Gospel Music Association GMA Academy, The Proof Is In The Pudding Contest, NBC/PAX America’s Most Talented Kids, Colgate Country Showdown and the 2007 Drug Free AZ Superstar Search. She also won the Torrid search for the “Next Plus Size Model.” She was flown to California, where she was used in a number of Torrid ads and promotional pieces. A full-page ad for Torrid featuring Sparks ran in the December 2006 issue of Seventeen magazine

David Cook and Kris had recorded independent albums before AI. Clay Aiken had recorded 3 demo albums. And David Archuleta had released two singles, was the Junior Vocal Champion on Star Search 2, and had performed on several national TV shows before AI.

I for one will never watch AI again. Actually the only reason I watched this season was because of Adam. Anyway, if AI would have only allowed ONE vote per person Adam would have won. ‘Vote number one’ had Adam way ahead and predicted him the winner. Here again, ‘Vote number one’ only allows one vote per person! Anyway, Adam will do fine w/o the ‘title’, he’s #7 on google today! BTY, Young Hollywood Awards just posted Adam’s acceptance speech from Sunday, it’s really good! Check it out on their website.

    Collette – I hear you :)

last year I started “watching” Idol – I don’t live in the US, so I can only search the you tube a day later. I found Rickey last year and loved it, until I found this blog. Now this is practically the only place I go for news. It’s GREAT. Well I do love Idolatry too :)

  • listen

I agree that the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Rock Starà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ moniker being bandied about for Adam is certainly premature. I bet Adam would be the first to agree. He always looked uncomfortable whenever Kara or Paula referred to him as such.

However, to state emphatically that he will never be a Rock Star or never make it big as a rock artist is premature as well. Granted, no AI contestant has been welcomed into the rock genre at this point, but none of us know where Adam will end up. I suppose if he sings a bit w/ Queen, that may help smooth the transition into the rock arena.

(Personally, I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care less in which genre he ends up, as long as he puts out quality records I want to hear.)

The only way to make Idol a relevant show with younger people who will actually buy an Idol’s cd is to make voting fair and easy. It is true that the perception is that if you can’t sit and powervote, then your votes don’t count. Also, it just clogs the lines. Fans of both Kris and Adam will tell you they know of countless people who attempted to vote the first 3 hours of voting on the East Coast and couldn’t get a single vote in. Most people can’t stay up to midnight on a work/school night to get s silly vote in. So, Idol didn’t count the actual number of fans.

Idol needs to make it simple. Include online voting. Make it fun for the average viewer.

In some of the RS quotes released today that weren’t included in the article, Adam acknowledges that he knows full well that not all Idols go on to huge success. He lives in Hollywood so I’m sure he’s aware of the 15 minutes of fame. I don’t think he’s claiming he’s a rock god. In fact, what he says is that he wants a good song, with a great melody. He says it has to have a great hook, and add in some futuristic stuff. All of that is what is popular in the Pop World today.

  • CindyM

I’m an Adam fan, but I still don’t think he would have won with one vote each. All fans power text, so to think only Kris fans did it is wrong IMO. I don’t think that relying on web site votes doesn’t work either because the casual fans don’t usually participate in those. At first I was angry and heartbroken thAt Adam didn’t win, now I’m not. I think if Adam had won, I don’t think Adam would have been allowed to be as open as he has been and I think the ability has been important for him. I’m happy for both Kris and Adam (Allison too) and can’t wait for what they’ll do next!

  • lucy

Jagger is proof that you can create an amazing aura of sexiness that fills large open-air arenas while being kind of an ugly little creature. Sort of the great god Pan or something. Who’s really interested in those goat legs? and yet …

  • TKat

I think the claims by people that they cast 10,000 or 12,000 votes at a crack have permeated the consciousness of the public at large and the perception is already out there among the casual voters that their votes donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t count.

I’m really glad that the Top 2 AI8 finalists both said they didn’t care about winning — just performing the best that they could. And I have no doubt that it’s best that Kris won. (And I am an OTT Adam fan.) But having the Top 2 finishers saying it doesn’t matter who won and having increased levels of Voter Apathy may present a challenge for AI.

The last legit consumer polls on AI voting were done in May-June 2008, and they found that over 50% of AI viewers believed that there was no reason to vote, that their votes didn’t matter. I haven’t seen anything for a respected consumer research firm yet this year but my bet is that AI Voter Apathy has increased significantly.

Not only are there general press reports about AI voting issues, but there was the BGT voting question about Susan Boyle, too.

Voter participation in AI is part of it’s formula for success. I doubt that AI will change the voting rules next year, but I bet that they go out of their way to emphasize that they can and will eliminate power text votes.

    http://blogs.usatoday.com/entertainment/2009/06/david-archuleta-kind-of-assumed-adam-lamberts-gay.html?csp=34

Most people probably werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t surprised by American Idol winner Adam Lambertà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s coming-out cover for Rolling Stone earlier this week. One of the least surprised of those was Idol finalist David Archuleta.

USA TODAYà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Arienne Thompson caught up with him last night in D.C. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I just kind of assumed it. I think everyone else did, too,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he admitted. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think it was a big surprise. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure he was happy with who he was.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    more at link
    ————————

    http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2009-06-10-foster_N.htm
(theres some classic david stuff here… ROFL Im cracking up!)

Fox, Union shine a light on foster-care issue

    -snip-
Archuleta performed Imagine, a song that won him rave reviews during his time on Idol. But even after singing it plenty of times before, the bashful 18-year-old was still a little nervous à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ this time he played the piano and sang.

“I have never accompanied myself on Imagine,” he admitted. But the important thing is to “get the spirit of the song across.”

    -snip-
    (ROFL wtf david im dying)

Sexiness was lost on Archuleta, however. He’s a prime target for the teen love craze in Hollywood, but he doesn’t seem fazed by romance at all. He’s going on tour with Disney star Demi Lovato this summer, but don’t expect any sparks to fly just yet. “I’ve only talked to her twice.”

Asked if he has his eye on any other celebrities, he deadpans, “No” and explains that he isn’t into the Miley Cyruses of the world for a very good reason.

“If they are younger than me, then it would technically be illegal,” he said with a laugh. “I wouldn’t mind going on a fun date.”

  • TKat

I agree that it was a good thing that Adam didn’t win Idol because that would have made it very difficult for him to do the post-Idol PR pivot he’s in the midst of. “I did it to get exposure — not to win.” has a lot more credibility than “I won but it didn’t really matter.”

I think if Adam had won, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think Adam would have been allowed to be as open as he has been and I think the ability has been important for him. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m happy for both Kris and Adam (Allison too) and canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wait for what theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll do next!

In the Rolling Stone article Adam states that it was his decision how to handle the discussion about his sexuality, and that AI PR said that they would support him whatever he chose to do. And in recent interviews he also said it was his choice to wait for the RS interview to come out. So, unless Adam is lying, TPTB didn’t stop him from talking about it.

They had every reason to think that Adam had a chance to win in March when those photos hit the Web.

If he won, they might not have chosen RS to get the big story, they might have gone with People. And that would have been a different article, but RS still would have cover the story.

Finally, there has been information about Adam and drug use online since before American Idol. I think that win or loss, Adam would have adressed it now so that it didn’t become a big rumor.

  • LaurelG

Wow, in that ET promo link posted above (thanks, Sunn) Adam’s hair looks much shorter on the sides. I know people were commenting about it during the YH red carpet videos, but I wasn’t sure – just thought it was the way he had combed his hair. Speaking of the YH Awards, did someone say that Kris had attended too. How do we know? Any photographic evidence?

So much discussion on the boards yesterday about the “sticking it” comment, which didn’t really faze me. The comment I wish he’d omitted? Sex Clubs. Because the ET promo really zeroes in on it …

It’s the clip that they recorded at the YH Awards. Hope it’s a good interview and that they at least spend 1 minute on music!

Adam made the #1 story on MSNBC’s Countdown (Keith Oberman) but there was almost nothing about music in the whole piece. Idol has been on Countdown before, but as far as I can tell this is the first time anything Idol was the #1 story on Countdown.

    http://www.latina.com/blogs/vivo-por-tivo/7-sexiest-latin-reality-tv-stars

David Archuleta: Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s entirely possible that the word à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“cutieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was invented for former American Idol finalist, David Archuleta, 18. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s also fitting that Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s first single (which made it to #2 on the Billboard 200 chart) was called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Crush,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ because every Latina staffer (and every Latina I know) has a major crush on the 18-year-old Honduran with dimples. David also has an infectious smile, and as we all know, an amazing singing voice, but what really makes him stand out is that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a genuinely nice guy.

Regarding the power voting, I’m completely ok with this year’s results, believe Kris definitely won fair and square (AT&T aside), but I do wish the system would change. I agree that the online voting makes sense – not sure why AI hasn’t jumped on that band wagon yet, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do soon (I predicted they’d do the itunes tie-in a few years before they actually got around to it). Plus, online voting gets them more votes to report for next year’s “record breaking total!”

I think texting sucks, though – especially only being able to do it on AT&T, and since it heavily favors a younger demographic, imo. Younger viewers are more likely to have unlimited texting, whereas someone like me has the “pay per text” (yeah, I’m lame) and can’t afford to send THAT many votes to someone (though I’ll admit I still spent way too much money on voting this year!)

Get a load of this PIC… Kris owns the same plaid shirt that Archie wore during the Teen Choice Awards. Either that or Kris borrowed it from him. They are after all label mates now. LOL!

David Archuleta of American Idol Woos Washington

Archuleta capped his two-day stay at a dinner for the conference last night. And while stars Shawn King and Terrance Howard performed, too, it was young Archuleta who earned a State Department standing O in the Benjamin Franklin Diplomatic Reception Room.

    -snip-
    about the christmas album:

He said the album will include traditional songs like “Silent Night” and up to three written just for David.

that usnews article and review for david in washington, dc is all kindsa awesome – good find frogcooke :clap_tb:

  • wand3rful

uh, that person who wrote that article must be NEW to Idol because people have been doing that for years since the early seasons.

LOL. I’ve noticed a lot of articles recently about the Idol voting system from non Idol viewers or reporters who are too lazy or cool to do Idol related research.

the texting option irks me bc im with verizon. but other than that, not sure what producers can change. limit calls per line? but that takes away from their glory of announcing the amount of votes at the beg of each show, heh.

I get the feeling that the meet and greets at the AI tour this year might not include a lot from 1, 2 and 4. If Kris, Adam, and Allison are all going to be busy recording over the summer, I am sure that they won’t have a lot of time or energy to do a lot of the “fluff” stuff that goes along with the tour, i.e. autograph signings, before and after concert meet and greets. Based on last year the Davids, and especially Cook were called away a lot to do “other stuff” when they weren’t actual on stage. Archie also recorded, promoted, and made the video for Crush while on tour. I can see this sort of thing happening again.

I’m sure glad this kind of stuff is done by “twenty” year olds. I can’t even imagine someone like Susan Whatshername having the energy to keep up with the demanding tour schedule for Britian’s Got Talent. Hope she just sings, travels, and goes to bed.

  • wjmtv

Cookie’s gonna be on my TV again? Excellent!

I want to hear about the next record…

Really not looking forward to Kris’ next interview, though. They’ll be back to talking about Adam all the time again. I guess he isn’t going to have to worry about not “staying grounded” for a while yet….

  • AnnaMarieFields

Tess your freaking me out.I refuse to leave my AI concert without meeting or
getting a autograph from Allison,Adam and Kris. Those are the real stars.I need
there signature for when there famous and on top of the charts.I dont care for
anyone else but Matt just alittle.

Last year Cookie gave me a hug at the AI concert.Archie signed a picture for me.And werent they recording on tour? I hope my top three can be part of the meet and greets.I mean atleast allison???

I don’t know what the other idols did, but from following DA, he did an amazing amount of autograph singing and meet and greets, even with his busy schedule. It was amazing.

  • leome

Yeah, even with busy scheddule the guys still had time for the fans. Cook stopped going out after the shows at some point but it wasn’t just because of him having to fly away… If everything goes well this year I don’t think that will be a big problem.

American Idol alum David Archuleta recorded a studio version of Vanessa Carlton’s 1,000 Miles and just released it on iTunes.

And we love love love it!

    Check it out below.

Archie made himself available for long stretches during the tour–and he was recording constantly. Last year’s idols were also worked harder throughout the season.

Btw, did you all know Archie’s album has passed platinum outside the US? This would include sales in Australial and the UK. It’s doing particularly well in Asia. It has been #2 in the Philippines ever since the Manila concert; Cook’s cd is #5.

Yeah right. Zombie and Gene Simmons are right, Adam is no rock god, despite what Kara and Paula say. He has yet to prove himself, and he will never be iconic like Jagger.

Don’t know how you are reading your crystal ball, but it just doesn’t agree with mine. Only time will tell, unless perhaps some of us are living in the future. :annoyed_tb: I prefer to be more positive on this issue. JMO

  • noctem seizure

Yeah right. Zombie and Gene Simmons are right,

I actually appreciate Rob’s explanation of his perspective, not about Adam specifically, but his dislike for using reality show exposure as a pathway to “making it”. Because I always ask “rock snobs” (like my brother) the same question– “What about people like Bo Bice, Chris Daughtry, David Cook, Michael Johns etc. who have struggled for years “the legitimate way” to get their break and haven’t gotten it and see AI as their last chance, so to speak?”

Well, nobody, before Zombie ever provided me a direct response to that question. But, I get what he was saying, even if I don’t agree. It’s the fatalist point of view. If you do possess the chops to make it in the business, but you haven’t made it “the old-fashioned way”, then in the traditionalists’ view, you weren’t supposed to make it.

So, going the AI route is STILL not an acceptable road to them, even if you do fall into the “have-the-talent-but-haven’t-got-the-break” category. It simply wasn’t meant to happen for you. Interesting….

    *******************************************

(However, I will say that the description of this scenario wouldn’t seem to apply to Adam– if he IS going to do ROCK– because he really HASN’T cut his teeth the “old-fashioned way”, trying to make it in the genre (his theater experience doesn’t count as trying to make it in “rock”). His band experience seems to be quite limited, compared to the others I mentioned. So, he actually WOULD fall under the category of people using Idol as a “shortcut” to become “rock stars”, rather than those who have tried the “long-road” and gotten nowhere.

I am super interested in actually meeting the guys, getting autographs, etc. after the shows. Does anyone know how to do that? Every year I tell myself I’m going to, and every year I get too nervous (which is weird, because I’ve actually met a lot of celebrities in NY by waiting after theater shows (met Cyndi Lauper! Very funny and chatty in person (but short)!)
