Exclusive: American Idol’s Ace Young Won’t Join Chippendales

Ace’s brother and business partner Ryan Young tells RumorFix that the male dance troupe flew Ace into Las Vegas to see the show and gauge his interest.

“But it’s not right for Ace right now,” Ryan tells us. If Ace would have taken the job, he would replace his buddy Jeff Timmons from 98 Degrees, who’s highly-successful run there ends on June 19.

Ryan says Ace is busy writing and recording music and acting.

Meet my new BFF: New U.S. X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger cuddles up to Paula Abdul… but does their pose look familiar?

ust a day after starting in her role as a judge on the panel of U.S. X Factor, and it seems Nicole Scherzinger is already firm friends with fellow judge Paula Abdul.

The 32-year-old star tweeted a picture of her and Paula cuddling up backstage at the show’s auditions in New Jersey yesterday with the caption: ‘A dream come true! I was & always will B her biggest fan! I cnt believe I get 2 work w/Paula. X Factor day 1!’

However, the picture did bear a striking resemblance to a similar picture tweeted by Paula of her and Cheryl Cole during her incredibly short time on the U.S. X Factor panel.

Color Purple Star Fantasia Barrino Sets Eyes on Mahalia Jackson Film

Color Purple star and “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino will explore the life of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in a new biographical film based on the Jules Schwerin book “Got to Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel.”

The New York Post reports that the $23.9 million film, to be titled “Mahalia,” is endorsed by the estate of the late singer, who first brought gospel to mainstream white audiences. The film will trace her life from her poverty-stricken beginnings through her rise as an influential performer and supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr.

10 things we learned about ‘X Factor’ from last night’s New Jersey auditions

The X Factor returned to New Jersey on Wednesday for the first of two days of judges round auditions. EW joined an audience of roughly 5,000 for the day’s second taping at Newark’s Prudential Center, which featured 22 contestants. Fox told journalists to refrain from IDing performers and revealing their song choices, backstories, and comments to the judges, as well as quoting the judges’ critiques, so we’ll have to speak generally. But we were able to cull together the following list of 10 things you can expect from The X Factor this fall.

J.Lo manager plays the diva

A driver for Jennifer Lopez’s manager, Benny Medina, quit — apparently over his alleged diva behavior — during a celebrity-packed gala before the “American Idol” judge presented an award to Bill Clinton.

The limo driver quit after dropping Medina on the red carpet alongside Lopez, her sister Lynda and husband Marc Anthony at the Samsung Hope for Children Gala, which raised more than $1.4 million at Cipriani Wall Street on Tuesday night.

What’s Next for Cheryl Cole

Cheryl Cole has weathered more than her share of drama in the last year and her ouster from the U.S. edition of X Factor is hardly the least of it. There was Cole’s divorce from English football star Ashley Cole in September of 2010, not three months after she battled malaria, which she had contracted on a trip to Tanzania with UK X Factor.

The title to her second solo album, Messy Little Raindrops, released in November of 2010, pretty much said it all, but in the last few weeks, the barrage of bad news was more like a downpour as Cole was effectively let go from the show. (To date, there has been no official explanation for what led to her dismissal, and according to one source, her camp remains “miffed” regarding the matter.) So what’s next for Cole? THR breaks down her options.

‘I was really upset, I hate bullying’: BGT star Ronan Parke speaks out about the pain caused by internet smears

Britain’s Got Talent star Ronan Parke has blasted the anonymous blogger who helped mar his performance on the show’s final.

The 12-year-old singer became the victim of a vicious smear campaign last week, when someone claiming to be a Sony Music executive alleged the show was a fix and that Ronan had been groomed by the show’s creators.

He eventually came second in the finals last week after losing out to Jai McDowall, 24.

‘Dance’ Judge Mary Murphy Tells of More Arnold Womanizing

So You Think You Can Dance’ judge Mary Murphy shocked me and host Joy Behar on her hit HLN show recently when she revealed Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t just have a wondering eye on housekeepers and Sandra Bernhard, he also once tried to hit on Mary’s makeup artist … in an elevator … two seconds after they met.

“He even hit on my makeup artist in two seconds,” the dancing judge told Joy. “Two seconds in an elevator. That’s all it took. The door shut, the two of them in there, and he leans down and says, ‘Do you want to kiss me?’ And she backed up and she’s like … Well, she’s one of my makeup artists. I’m not going to say which one, but this is true, and in such a short period of time. I mean can you imagine on a daily basis how many women, though, that he has hit on. This is somebody he’d never seen before.”

Apologies, again, if it’s already been posted, but I didn’t catch this story here at MJ’s:

USA Today: Where are they now? ‘American Idol’ Season 9′s Casey James

“My intention was always to go into country music, not traditional country but doing what I do. It’s a good fit,” says Casey, 29, who wooed American Idol audiences with his long blond hair and guitar skills. And the popular Sugarland is the perfect place to see country in action: “Nobody’s dishing out advice, more just chilling and hanging out, vibing. Watching their shows is like getting advice. You learn all you can from every situation.”

Since last summer’s American Idols Live tour, Casey signed with Sony Nashville, moved to Music City, has been collecting and writing songs for his album, has held auditions for a band, has done radio visits and played shows. “It’s been crazy,” he says.

No scoop on the actual songs that will be included on the album, but I like the overall description:

He’s writing most of the songs on the album and plans to play guitar on every song. “I’m going to be myself, do acoustic music and slow ballads but also rock out with the guitar and do bluesy stuff, all wrapped into one.”

ETA: Apparently USA Today’s “Idol Chatter” blog posted updates on all the S9 finalists yesterday (6/8/2011), so check your favorites out there.

I have to see it to believe it – by the way, Pia’s domain is bought – you can’t buy it yourself – it just hasn’t been transferred anywhere. She’s as good as signed in my opinion – working with all of these people behind the scenes is a pretty sure bet of that :) Even better bet than a domain :)

  • abbysee

    Trenyce sounds great!

Yes, she does. She is the one that imho got away. I think she is probably the best R&B female voice, who could have also segued into pop as well. I think she is awesome. Now her back up singers were atrocious!

  • moadms

I love James and really hope he gets signed. He showed me he can do current when he covered 30 Sec to Mars and Muse. In fact I have Uprising by both Muse and James on my Ipod and I have to stop and really listen to figure out which verson I’m listening to.
Pia’s being signed is the one I just can’t figure out, When’s the last time Celine, Mariah or Whitney had a hit? Not in the last 10 years. And she’s nowhere close to Celine or Mariah in stage presence. I just don’t get her appeal. She’s as boring as watching paint dry. Leona Lewis is the closest comparison as far as big ballad singers that are current and Leona just got really lucky with Ryan Tedder’s Bleeding Love. Her second album did not do nearly as well. Maybe they’re looking at the sucess of Susan Boyle but her back story is really what sold her. She’s not an amazing singer.

She’s young. She can belt out a song. She is very pretty. Somewhat mysterious. I think they see a “package” when they see Pia.
And we really don’t know what the terms of any agreement are at this time.

At the end of the day, it isn’t my money…so I want to see what they can do with Pia. How they market her – how they promote her – how they sell her song to the radio, and how it does on the radio.

Other than the fact that I like Pia, there are other reasons why I don’t mind her signing: Namely, she is in such a different genre than both Haley & James that I can’t see her signing (if she has) having any real impact on whether they decide to sign Haley and/or James. All three of them bring something different to the table.

I do agree with you that Pia will need to do something beyond the big ballad to have a chance – that type of music just is not what you hear right now.

  • Susan

I wasn’t familiar with the Muse song when James performed it, but I have watched it on youtube since. They are very similar, you’re right, especially the verses and the music. But I like James’ voice much better in the chorus.

  • McCreerian

Pia’s being signed is the one I just can’t figure out, When’s the last time Celine, Mariah or Whitney had a hit? Not in the last 10 years.

She doesn’t ONLY sing their music. And Mariah did have a hit with “Obsessed” and “We belong together” over the last 10 years. But she has pre-idol videos of her singing Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, and other modern pop stars. Its not like Kelly wanted to sing Aretha type music after she did idol.

You won’t find me disagreeing, because I do think Pia is amazing.
But I also agree with the original poster in terms of stage presence – even in those pre-Idol videos, she sounds very good – in a few, she sounds GREAT….but she isn’t really connecting with the song or the audience. I think this is something Haley improved upon as the season went along, and I think it is something Pia may have improved upon as well if given more time. Unfortunately, she wasn’t given that time.
I am anxious to hear her first single to see if indeed she can make something that goes beyond what defined her on the Idol stage.

In the end, none of this really matters. What really matters is that by focusing so strongly on her, Interscope and 19 are cheapening the competition. We are rapidly reaching the point that has been harped on by the likes of Vote for the Worst for a long time–that winning or placing high is beginning not to matter. Daughtry was a good precedent in many ways, and a bad one in others–good in that it showed that it was possible for lower-placing finishers to have great success–which is not a bad thing–bad in that it spawned such things as this Pia pimping. 9th place is not 4th place. Mandisa has had success after finishing that low, but in a very specialized genre. If you’re going to have such buzz after finishing 9th, what was the point in finishing 3rd or 4th? Obviously the two singers who finished in those positions had a lot of fans and people anxious to hear their music.

Somebody who finished as low as 9th should NOT be getting this treatment ahead of the higher-placers, especially when 3rd and 4th place were won by singers known to have rabid fans. As is proper, everyone should take a backseat to the Top 2, and that has been done. But if you can get such treatment from AI, 19, and Interscope for finishing 9th as Pia is getting, contestants are going to get the idea that actually trying to advance further in the show or, god forbid, win it, really doesn’t matter at all. Do I begrudge Pia for shooting for the stars? No. Do I want her to fail? No. Do I think she does deserve a contract? Probably. But she should absolutely take a back seat to at least this year’s 3rd and 4th place finishers. Something about the way it has gone down just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and that has nothing to do with my feelings about Pia herself.

  • HR

    Completely disagree about bad precedent.

The only person the show is obligated to sign is the winner. The record company is not obligated to sign someone who finished third and they certainly don’t have to sign and promote 1-8 before they are allowed to sign and promote a 9th place contestant. That has never been part of the rule book. Consider why a record label would agree to sponser a show that demanded they sign 1 through 11 if they wanted to sign the 12th finisher. No record label would ever agree to that.

The contestants have always known if you want to be signed you need to finish 1st or 2nd. That’s the prize for placing that far. Everyone else has to convince the record label they are worthy of the investment.

I’m not making an argument labels are always right in the ones they bank on. I thought Elliott should have been signed earlier then he was and to a major label. My argument is that they are not obligated to hand out expensive record contracts to everyone and anyone other then the winner and maybe second place finisher.

  • fuzzywuzzy

The voting system on Idol is so badly compromised that I don’t think that the placement of any of the finalists on the show (except for the winner and maybe the runner-up) should dictate whether or not they are signed or promoted by the label.

    Not sure what that means.

Have no problem if they sign her. If they try to turn her into the next Celine, I’m not buying what she’s selling. Not the type of music I enjoy.

ETA: further research shows that she’s probably signed just to 19 and Simon Fuller somehow. Same DNS as David and Victoria Beckham.

The contestants have always known if you want to be signed you need to finish 1st or 2nd. That’s the prize for placing that far. Everyone else has to convince the record label they are worthy of the investment.

And Pia did that…how exactly? By singing a string of ballads and then getting eliminated when she tried to do something different? This is why I said that the lower-placing contestants deserve, to some degree, to take a back seat to those who finish–oh, I don’t know, let’s use the “Daughtry line”–fourth or higher. If you couldn’t get enough people to vote you higher than 9th, where is the evidence that they would buy your album above the third and fourth place finishers who, in this case, showed INFINITELY more versatility and broad appeal than she did? It’s not a black and white thing for sure, but speaking to your point about convincing your label that you are worth the effort? I’m sorry, but Pia absolutely did not do anything like that. Haley and James HAVE done that. And this is why it bugs me. She is known for singing ballads, having long legs, being Italian-American, and being shockingly eliminated–and precious little else.

If you check any of the contestants below 4th place, you will see exactly the same registration for them as for Pia and Jacob. That is because 19E registers these domains at the very beginning so that they are available, should the need arise. When you try to link to the contestant domains you will get a message saying they do not exist, meaning they have not been activated – they are reserved only.

If appropriate, the domains are transferred to UMG, as was done with Scotty and Lauren whose sites are now active. Haley and James’ domains have also been transferred to UMG, hence the speculation that these 2 are at least being considered for contracts. Pia has not been transferred to UMG, which is interesting. This suggests that she may actually not be signed to Interscope/UMG, but is working with 19E, to whom she is still under contract anyways, (as they all are until the end of the tour) to produce music. Whether or not the recordings are released remains to be seen. I am sure there are many demo tracks that have been recorded by many artists, that never get released. Recording means little until an official announcement of a recording contract is made, and unless I missed it, this has not been done.
