My $0.20-worth “The Magic of Paula Abdul” book describes Paula’s “hit-making history” in this manner:

Few artists have had such a successful debut album as Paula. Literally, Paula rode the wave of success from Forever Your Girl for nearly two and a half years! With one solid gold hit after another, the album just busted up the charts, selling over ten million copies worldwide. And even when one of her slammin’ dance tracks slipped from its Number One chart position, there was always another awesome Paula tune close behind to fill the void. One disc jockey noted that Paula had managed to keep a succession of singles in the Top 40 for a whopping 66 straight weeks!

Spawning four Number One singles, Forever Your Girl spent over 100 weeks on the Billboard charts, and rested comfortably in the Number One album spot for ten of those weeks, helping to earn this tornado-in-toe-shoes a name for herself in the music biz – not to mention a batch of prestigious awards…

Most Idols can only hope to duplicate success like that. :)

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My label wanted me to sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Never Again,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ she says. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“And I was like, To promote yourself on a charity event is beyond crass. People are starving and dying and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m up there singing some bitter pop song? And believe me, everyone wanted me to sing it. Because they are jaded and they have no soul. Imagine sitting in a room full of people totally against you. Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t they hear themselves speaking? Capitalize on AIDS? Are you kidding? Insulting an entire nation of people? I just refused.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I think she made the right choice to sing something else, and her version of Up to the Mountain was just fantastic.

RE: American Idols Live, a summer concert tour that features the top 10 finalists from Foxà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hit show American Idol, shot up the ranks to the top of the concert category, with 8.8% of the concert tickets sold and 2.5% of the total tickets sold on TicketsNow.

    2 points ( Questions really ) :

    1) Does anybody know what the total box office total sales for previous Idol tours were and what percentage venues were sold out ? I can vaguely remember that last season’s Idol tour grossed $35 Million and was 98% sold out. What about the previous years ?

    2) I am particularly interested in how Idol winners and contestants do ON THEIR OWN when they perform their SOLO concerts as compared to other well known non-idol chart topping artists who perform on the same venue.

For instance, I would be interested to compare the sales numbers of Taylor Hicks at House of Blues venues with known artists because I know that top charting artists like — Akon, Robin Thicke, Britney Spears ( where her lip synched CD malfunctioned) and Five For Fighting have performed at HOB’s. Any comparison figures will be highly educational and greatly appreciated.

Music figure gurus like Kirsten or Nevada might enlighten us but anyone’s input are welcome.

  • SpenserJ

And what do you think will be the headline, Daughtry sold out! Or Daughtry tickets only ten pounds!

But I still don’t understand this from a financial standpoint. I get that they want to start with the small venues for various reasons (i.e. giving the band more time to get into their groove before playing larger venues). But, charging $10 – $20 in venues where the most they can be making is $10,000 – $20,000 a show? With multiple opening acts and all of the costs associated with a tour, they have got to be bleeding red ink to an enormous degree.

I think they could and should be charging more. Who actively tries to lose money? And, I’m not snarking – I truly am just baffled. Do they really think they can’t sell out to 500 or 1,000 people if they charge $30.00?

  • Little Boy Blue

It does seem rather odd. I’d be interested to hear what the PR people say is the logic behind that (not that they have to explain anything to us). Other groups without hit records are charging more at some of the same venues.

    At todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s exchange rate thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s about USD $20.00

I am interested in seeing how Idol tour sales compare this year to next. I won’t lose much sleep worrying about Daughtry’s finances though. Whatever his managers are doing, I think it’ll work out fine. I think Elliott’s had some sold out shows and others that weren’t. In the end, the challenge for all of them is to have a successful career independent of idol. If they can’t do that, they won’t make it in the end.

  • squishy

I don’t think TPTB are trying to make money off of DAUGHTRY concert tickets (that’s why they are only $20) and cheap in London. The DAUGHTRY tour IMO is for promotional reasons (as well as for the guys to get experience as a band together under their belt). They will be going to Asia for a week as well as to Australia. These are more radio promotional tours rather than make money from concert sales.

Maybe down the road they will be looking to make money off the concerts but for now it is just to get the DAUGHTRY name out there. They will be trying to market DAUGHTRY world wide soon.

In the article that Valley placed a couple of days ago, TPTB said they were to trying to establish DAUGHTRY to have a long term career rather than make a lot of money as quickly as possible. In that article TPTB said that this is the best way to market DAUGHTRY and to establish them to have a career (small venues first, large venues later). It seems to be working.

Chris must have been listening Taylor’s Access Hollywood interview right before his spring tour, cuz he said those exact words about starting small and getting bigger.

Watch it here, starting at the 3:35 mark:

  • Kirsten

In the article that Valley placed a couple of days ago, TPTB said they were to trying to establish DAUGHTRY to have a long term career rather than make a lot of money as quickly as possible.

Not to pick nits, but that is about the third or fourth story his PR team has come up with for Daughtry playing small venues. When PR people keep changing their story, it begins to seem like spin.

And playing small venues doesn’t preclude charging more than $20 for a ticket.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. Obviously, Daughtry’s tour is getting good results (the press can’t stop talking about sold out tour dates) and he’s moving units, so it’s all good. I’m just curious about the logic.

Daughtry is huge success. No doubt about that. I wish him well on his international adventures. I suspect that Chris hasn’t had much of a chance to travel the world before now. So, if nothing else, he gets to see new sites. Must be exciting for him, the band and his international fans.

ETA: Griz, starting small is not a new strategy. I’m sure that it is adopted by many.

ETA: Rad, if they only needed to play small venues to find their groove and they are still booking themselves into small venues, one might conclude that they still don’t think they’ve found their groove. Or that there might be other reasons to play small venues.

  • radname

They are still trying to find their groove. Arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t these guys professionals musicians. They were on a 60 plus city tour and they still havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t found their grooveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.LOL

That’s not what the person who wrote the comment you replied to was referring to. They were simply saying that the reason they started out with smaller venues first was for them to help find their groove. They didn’t say they hadn’t found them, but the reason there were small venues in the first place was to get used to performing together. I think the OP is right, and I imagine Daughtry will be playing in larger venues as the headliner very shortly.

  • sexygirl

In the end, the challenge for all of them is to have a successful career independent of idol. If they canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t do that, they wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t make it in the end.

You’re 100 percent right. I was a bit shocked when I saw Justin Guarini back on the AI team as an announcer for their Idol Red Carpet show the week of the Finals. I don’t think there is anything wrong with showing up on the show to plug a single or a project but I think there has to come a time when you have to show that you can make it, whether it be on a small or large scale, without AI..

Because people always book concerts the day before.
I think these tour dates have been set up since last year. Theres really no way of knowing Daughtry would end up as big as they have been. You don’t just play a week of shows then go..okay, yeah I think we got it, now lets play in larger venues tomorrow.

When and where was Elliott in MEMPHIS???? Had I known I would have went to see him in a heartbeat. It is just a tad over an hour drive for us!

In the article that Valley placed a couple of days ago, TPTB said they were to trying to establish DAUGHTRY to have a long term career rather than make a lot of money as quickly as possible.

So let me see, if I get this with Chris..Instant success and making money is great as far as cd sales are concerned but not his tours..I think I got that. Chris does have the Spin Doctors from AI working for him..Well, as the saying goes, if you dazzle them with interlect, baffle them with BS…LOL

ETA: What I would like to know is, what size venues were Clay playing in when he was selling as much cds as Chris. I know he was the headliner but don’t remember the general size of his venues. Were they as small. I ask because I believe Clay was also managed by 19M back then..

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not what the person who wrote the comment you replied to was referring to. Actually, I understood what the poster meant but you just confused the heck out of me with your post..LOL

I am aware that these things take time, but new dates have been booked this year since Daughtry became a huge success. We are almost half way through the year here.

I’m not picking on Daughtry. Obviously, there is a strategy involved here or they wouldn’t keep booking small venues. It’s successful for them, so I’m not saying it’s a bad strategy. I’m just curious about the internal logic for that strategy.

  • jpfan

While it now seems inevitable, no rocker or 4th place finisher has ever come out of Idol a success. (I don’t think Bo Bice is currently viewed as a success.) Since DAUGHTRY is a cash cow, I’m sure they want this income stream for years. Plus I don’t see the reigning champ Jordin as setting the world on fire. Maybe Blake will move the beloved units but it’s not like multi plantinum selling artists grow on trees any more. And the days when winning AI guaranteed you 1.8 mil units minimum are over. So right now Carrie and Chris are doing it for Clive and I’m sure they’re being managed very carefully indeed.

Maybe Taylor’s Ford commercial gave him a big edge but to me Jordin has been a very low wattage winner.

Except they’re no longer booking small venues. If you look at Daughtry’s tour for the rest of the summer, only two or three dates(out of 40 or so)qualify. At one of the small venues, the Biloxi Hard Rock in August, tickets range from $50-$75 SRO(sold out).

I always thought there was a bit of a lull after the show is over until the single comes out but now that’s not going to happen. And then the tour comes, I hope Jordins able to make a good record, although she could easily sing Diane Warren fluff.

Is it my imagination, or is the buzz surrounding Jordin Sparks almost non-existant since the finale, except for her weight issues?

I think she (Kelly) made the right choice to sing something else, and her version of Up to the Mountain was just fantastic.

Kelly was exquisite and captivating on the AI finale.

Re: Daughtry. I question nothing his handlers do. They have been spot-on perfect in making the right decisions for his career so far. I don’t get his popularity and never will, but I certainly applaud the way he has been promoted so far. Not one misstep, in my view.

I think it is simply the continuation of what was a less-than-exciting year and a less-than-exciting winner. That is my take on it, at least. Not much to buzz about during the show and not much to buzz about now that it is over.

  • radname

wow, full Sober version is even better then the radio edit, theres a lot of good songs on the cd, but my favourite are Irvine (very indie type of feel, catpower/fiest like) Chivas (bonus song) is just acoustic guitar that holds a lot of soul in it.
I really like this cd, definatly not as mainstream although there are a lot of radio friendly songs on the cd.

With the NBA Finals under way and the San Antonio Spurs out to a 1-0 lead, expect to see some top music stars performing the National Anthem during the series. LeAnn Rimes will sing before Game 2 on Sunday, June 10. Singer/songwriter Ben Harper will sing the anthem before Game 3 on June 12 and American Idol alum Taylor Hicks will perform at Game 4 on June 14.

I agree she sounded great on the finale as well. And I actually like Never Again quite a bit too but I think the other song worked better in the context of the Idol Gives Back show (and this way I got to hear both :) ).

Maybe it’s just me but I think it’s a bit much to believe that if you’re not successful within the year of your AI tenor you career is over. Jennifer Hudson must be thankful for her good fortune. She must have been seen as a hasbeen by the time she received her break..LOL

Also, I don’t see why Chris finishing in forth place and being successful is so surprising. I know AI like their success stories to come from the winners so it can fit their story of creating a “superstar” but anyone of those contestants can go on to be a success story regardless of where they finished in the show. After all it’s just a show. The only downside, and that’s AI fault, is the feeling that if someone outside of the winner can be a success story then why waste your time trying to win..

  • radname

sexygirl I think the key word there was COME OUT OF IDOL, not 4 years after appearing on the show all of a sudden catch a big break and become famous.
The only rockers on the show so far are Chris, Bo and Constantine (ew). I don’t see the last two ever being bigger than Chris.
Oh Canadian Idol started up here and for a competition that prides itself on finding unique singers (read: not very good) they’ve found about 4-5 Chris Daughtry sound alikes. And one sound alike/look alike. I don’t enjoy Nicklebacks music so I don’t want to be surrounded by copycats. (For the record, I like Chris’ voice, not necessarily the type of music he’s making at the moment.)

No, it is hilarious. I can’t believe that I cared, but I wanted that girl back in jail.

Another leak, this time from JHud. Courtesy of ONTD. Personally, I’m not too thrilled with the song. It feels very cookie-cutter. The song contains a bit of language, so if there are small children around, you may not want the sound turned up too loud. My apologies if I’m overstepping any bounds by posting this link here. If so, please feel free to delete.

Also, I ran across a mention of the AI finale’s Sgt. Pepper’s Medley in EW’s review of “Instant Karma” as I flipped through the mag this afternoon. It actually made me chuckle, because I quite liked the medley, but as they say, to each their own:

Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur

Maybe it’s too soon to release a John Lennon tribute, with the horrors of May 23 still fresh in our minds. Beatles fans haven’t fully recovered from that night’s American Idol finale salute to Sgt. Pepper à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ an assault that saw Taylor Hicks turning ”A Day in the Life” into a Michael Bolton ballad. Amid this lingering posttraumatic stress comes Instant Karma, a charity project that finds superstars and cult artists tackling Lennon’s personal, peace-mongering, hard-to-cover solo canon.

LOL, you’re not the only one. However, this is great publicity for her, and I’m sick of seeing her face on the TV screen. While I was at the gym today, a random guy stopped in his tracks to watch the news, which was non-stop coverage of the Paris saga. Before he walked off, he shouted at the TV, “Enough already!!” Made me laugh.

Blake is going to be on Best Week Ever tonight (VH1). This is what TV Guide says:

Blake Lewis visits the studio; Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan are discussed. Also: a look at à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hell’s Kitchenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Sopranosà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ finale.

The more EW writes reviews the more things stay the same. They mock Taylor’s rendition of the song, and then when you look at the comments below the article, you have a slew of responders who vent their anger on the writer ( many even canceling their Entertainment Weekly subscriptions on the spot ).

I guess this is going to be a constant in the career of Taylor Hicks. He will be slammed and slammed by critics in their internet articles and they will in turn face the wrath of fans.

What fans of Taylor don’t realize is that the writer is an equal opportunity mocker who DISLIKED what everyone did with Sgt. Peppers on the show (including Green Day’s version ).
