Hudson on Simpson Joining Weight Watchers – Jennifer Hudson’s performance was one of the highlights of last night’s star-studded 11th annual Samsung Hope for Children Gala in New York City, where she also accepted a donation for her charity the Julian D. King Gift Foundation, which she founded in honor of her late nephew who was murdered three years ago. Hudson also unsurprisingly had thoughts on Jessica Simpson’s recent highly publicized Weight Watchers deal, given that she herself famously shed 80 pounds under the program. “Oh I think she’ll do alright — get yourself back into those daisy dukes girl!,” she jokes. – Read more at ETOnline

Kelly Clarkson: ‘I Have No Desire to Be Super-Skinny’ – As for imparting tips to up-and-coming singers on her show, she says she’s giving the Duets contestants something she never had on Idol. “I’m going to be completely honest – I had no one looking out for me. They were looking out for the show, and it was horrible,” she says. “I was 19 years old. I was smart enough to know that it wasn’t about me, but that didn’t make it any easier. I’m all cried out about it, but my first four years, I hated my life; I almost quit a dozen times.”

elliegrll: It seems like the most successful idol alums realize that the show is the most important thing, but I guess that Kelly shows that it’s still hard to deal with that fact.  This is why the alums need management that is separate from 19, as well as very supportive family and friends.

Kelly really had to deal with a lot of startup issues on the management side though. At that point nobody knew if the franchise could launch a viable career, and everything was subsidiary to the franchise. I don’t think they had any idea how to support somebody who was an unknown before being on this TV show and was suddenly coping with everything. It was especially bad the 1st couple years (From Justin To Kelly, anybody?). I think after Kelly’s debut album success and Clay and Ruben’s big album sales out of the gate (and Clay’s threatened lawsuit over 19M’s conflict of interest), the management arm of 19 got a little more serious IMO.

They got Kelly Breakaway the song to help set up her sophomore album and stood by Kelly at least somewhat when she had battles with RCA/Clive for that album. They handled Fantasia pretty well out of the gate. With Carrie they suddenly found themselves thrust into a market they didn’t know, one with its own traditions and requirements. It could’ve gone so wrong but they listened to a lot of the right people and over the next couple of years set up an office in Nashville, got connected to Nashville writers, and so on and so forth. By season 5 they had the TV side of national promo down for the Idols they managed, but they also benefited from the legitimacy and pull Idol had.

But, what I’m trying to say is I really do think Kelly and Clay had it the worst on the management side. They did clueless things to start out with Kelly and in Clay’s case they actively held him back (not that I think it would’ve made a huge difference in where he is today). I think they got better, and maybe some of the management issues now are because Idol doesn’t have the same pull in the market. And, other than learning quickly about the country market (though they’ll never be treated as insiders in Nashville), 19M has never been that good at developing targeted marketing plans to take a mid-level act (or lower level act) to the next level.

The third place finisher always gets slighted when it comes to post show appearances.

Jessica really didn’t get to do more things, because of Phillip’s illness.  I can understand why 19 didn’t send her and Joshua out together in Phillip’s place, if they had then Phillip’s fans would have been upset.

With the announcement of that MMVA performance, Kelly’s got a crazy busy schedule this month.  She’s in the UK right now (Radio 1 Live Lounge performance in a few hours) through at least the 9th.  There were some rumors that she’d be heading to Sweden while she’s over there but nothing has turned up about that yet. Canada for the MMVAs on the 17th.  After that it’s to Brazil on the 23rd for that Pop Music Festival that J.Lo is also at.  Back to LA that week to get ready for the first live show of Duets on the 28th and finally to Milwaukee on the 29th for a concert.  I’m tired just thinking about all that travel.

I’m almost positive Scotty’s press release last year announcing his signing came around the 2nd week in June so there’s nothing unusual about Phillip or Jessica not having a press release yet.

eta: Cant find the official PR’s but there’s this dated 6/6

Kelly’s lost a legit 30-40 lbs. though and looks great on Duets.

There’s a piece on One Direction on GMA right now. Compared to them Stefano looks ready for AARP. lol
Watching the fan’s reactions, I’m at a loss, except to say today’s pop “stars” and music are really crap. All image, no substance.
    Sad.

I consider a lot of today’s pop stars to be like ‘plug and play’ hardware.  You can take any marginally talented person, plug into auto-tune and sound effects and get it on the radio.

    Sad, really…
