Irving Azoff may join Allen Shapiro in bid for CKX

Music mogul Irving Azoff may join one of the groups kicking the tires of CKX Inc., the parent company of “American Idol” producer 19 Entertainment.

Azoff, the chairman of Live Nation Entertainment, is considering backing the potential bid of $550 million being put together by Allen Shapiro, president and chief executive of Mosaic Media Group, and One Equity Partners, a private-equity arm of JP Morgan Chase, confirmed people close to the situation. The news of Azoff’s emergence as a potential player in the CKX sweepstakes was first reported by the New York Post.

If Azoff does throw some money Shapiro’s way, it won’t be the $200 million that the New York Post suggested. A person familiar with Azoff’s thinking indicated that any investment would be much smaller than that and added that right now the talks are very preliminary.

Idol fave, Evanescence team up

TORONTO – When he was looking to start a new band, the last place Evanescence co-founder Ben Moody went looking for a singer was American Idol.

“I didn’t watch the show; didn’t know anything about it, ” he says, relaxing in a darkened room above the El Mocambo on a scorching hot afternoon.

But after he decided he wanted to form We Are the Fallen with bassist Marty O’Brien (Disturbed, Static X) and original Evanescence members John LeCompt (guitar) and Rocky Gray (drums), he caught on to season seven alumnus Carly Smithson.

“Carly knew a girl that was renting a room from me who was hounding me to listen to her, ” he says. “We were looking for someone just like us, so I checked her out. That night I called her and said you’ve got to come over to the house and the next morning We Are the Fallen was born.”

Ozzy Osbourne Talks Tattoos, ‘American Idol’

“I suppose there are people who imagine me going to my Bavarian castle and hanging upside down from the f—ing rafters every night, ” he joked. “I’m just a guy, man — I’m just a crazy guy who started a merry-go-round ride many years ago, and I’m still here.” Ozzy has seen a lot changes over the years, but one of the biggest shifts in the music business — the emergence of reality singins shows like “American Idol” — is not something he cares to think about. “I cannot watch that sh–, ” said Osbourne, whose wife, Sharon, is a judge on reality performance competition “America’s Got Talent.” “I cannot do it for the simple fact that for a person to come out of the working-class thing, pass the audition, go on the show and then have a panel of people tell them how f—ed up they are … I’m a 42-year veteran and I could not f—ing do it. My hat goes off to all of those kids on those shows.”

Bret Michaels Talks About Health and ‘Idol’ Prospects

Bret Michaels has had one hell of a ride since he came to the PopEater offices in March. Since then, he’s suffered a brain hemorrhage that nearly killed him, had a stroke, won ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and appeared on ‘American Idol’ — an appearance that has led to speculation he may replace Simon Cowell at the show’s judge’s table. So what does he have to say about it all? PopEater was able to catch up with our old pal to talk about his recent life-threatening scares, the likelihood of him landing ‘Idol’ and how he’s going about life cautiously these days. “I combined diabetes with appendicitis with a brain hemorrhage, then a warning stroke and the PFO … that’s a five whammy cocktail punch. If you would have told me all that combined together, I would have said, ‘That person has to be a goner, ‘” Bret tells PopEater. After the jump, our chat with Bret, plus hear his cover of Sublime’s ‘What I Got.’

Clay Aiken: New Album Is Like a Homecoming

When “American Idol” season two favorite Clay Aiken belted out his touching 2003 rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Waters, ” he won over the hearts of millions.

Now, seven years later, he’s built his own bridge of success as a platinum-selling artist, Broadway actor, author and, more recently, a dad.

The down-to-earth, Raleigh, N.C. native just released his fifth studio album, “Tried and True, ” featuring classics from the ’50s and ’60s.

“It seems like a little bit of a departure from the last four albums I’ve made to some extent, but in truth, it’s really more of a homecoming in a way, because it’s really what I have always wanted to do, ” Aiken told CBSNews.com.

Paula Abdul Talks ‘Drop Dead Diva, ‘ Dancing & Needing Her Own “Judge Paula”

If singer-dancer-QVC maven Paula Abdul has truly mastered one thing, it’s keeping all of us guessing. Since vacating her judge position on ‘American Idol, ‘ Paula has been rumored to be doing ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and, more recently, pal Simon Cowell’s U.S. version of ‘X Factor.’

But surprise! It was recently announced that Paula’s got her own new dance-themed reality show coming midseason to CBS called ‘Got to Dance, ‘ where she’ll act as mentor and head judge. She’s also multi-tasking with some serious acting, playing a version of herself in dream sequences on Lifetime’s ‘Drop Dead Diva’ (season 2 premieres Sun., June 6, 9PM ET).

Ex-‘Idol’ music man moves to land of Leno

As a key player in “Idol’s” success — working with the show’s contestants, orchestrating the band and scoring musical arrangements — Minor doesn’t hesitate when asked how TV’s top show can reclaim its mojo after last season’s ratings dropoff.

“I think it’s a matter of casting, ” he says. “People watch that show because of the [contestants’] back stories, and I think in part it’s casting the show and making it interesting with interesting people.

“It’s just a matter of the talent out there and I think they’ll look at strong casting and musically expanding on their repertoire of songs.”

And Minor has a surprise pick for who he thinks should replace star “Idol” judge Simon Cowell, who left the show to launch the American version of his British hit, “The X Factor.”

“I really liked Harry Connick Jr., ” he says of the pop crooner, a guest judge last season.

“I thought he was great for the contestants by telling them, ‘Hey, I understand what you’re doing, musically, ‘ and then giving them pointers to help them further.

“It’s conflicting [for the contestants] when one person says ‘you need to make it your own’ and another judge says, ‘you made it your own.’
