Idoloonies: Thia Megia on Scary Vocal Coaches, Dream Idol Themes, and Her Love of…Reggae?

Thia Megia doesn’t mind a little tough love. The American Idol Season 10 finalist says “vocal coach from hell” Peggi Blu is one of the best mentors in the business. Thia is full of other surprises, too. In her Idoloonies interview, the teenage contestant talks about why waiting a few years to audition for Idol was never an option, how the stripped-down arrangement of her semifinal performance of “Out Here on My Own” came to be, and which of her iTunes recordings might turn you into a fan. ATLANTA — Every Wednesday night since she was 12, Lauren Alaina Suddeth belted out a two-hour set at a restaurant just across the Tennessee border from her hometown of Rossville, Ga.

She’d roll through “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and Miranda Lambert’s “Famous in a Small Town.”

The bubbly Suddeth, whose nickname is “LaLa,” has breezed through round after round of “Idol” with her signature country sound. Her success on the top-rated show is no surprise to the high school sophomore’

Hudson tale too light for $1M

Jennifer Hudson has radically changed her image by dropping more than 80 pounds as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman, but she can’t seem to land a seven-figure book deal.

The Oscar- and Grammy-winning actress/singer and her William Morris agent, Mel Berger, have been shopping a book proposal to major publishers for four years about Hudson’s weight struggle and her eventual transformation from a size 16 to 6.

But while Hudson’s weight struggle and self-help tips are marketable, sources say because of her $1 million-plus demand for the deal, publishers are holding out for the full story about her coping with the horrific slaying of her family.

Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. They fall in love and they sing ’80s hard rock.

He’s a big dreamer, she’s a small-town girl. Big hair, bodacious and totally awesome tunes make this an ideal fit for American Idol Season Four contestant, Constantine Maroulis.

Maroulis is playing Drew Bowie in Rock of Ages, which starts a Houston run Tuesday night at the Hobby Center in a Theater Under the Stars (TUTS) presentation. CultureMap caught with the busy rocker prior to his visit.

Maybe Americans are just not that into Cheryl Cole

Hello, friends. It has been brought to my attention that something called “Cheryl Cole” has been dismissed from the American version of something called “The X Factor” and replaced with something called “Nicole Scherzinger”. I gather that this dismissal is of interest to humans, because when my editor pitched this story to me he referred to it as the “Cheryl Cole situation” and assured me, rather conspiratorially, that he knew I would have “plenty to say.” Moreover, it has been suggested, it was Cole’s heavy northern accent that got her summarily kicked out of America forever – and could I please comment on that? How do Americans feel about various regional British accents, and which vowel combinations should savvy Brits choose in order to avoid deportation in the future?

Simon Cowell stretched by X Factor judging on both sides of the pond

Simon Cowell is back in Britain, with one or two things on his mind. It’s Britain’s Got Talent week – although the show seems to have just about managed without him on the judging panel – and, more to the point, The X Factor auditions are just about to begin in Birmingham on Wednesday and Thursday. Actually, the auditions were supposed to have begun nearly two weeks ago in Manchester, but somehow it wasn’t proving possible to get everybody in the right place at the right time. Which is probably a fair summary of where the ITV X Factor is right now: a last-minute scramble to get everything done on time.

There are, at the time of writing, no confirmed judges. There have, of course, been plenty of leaks to the media – Gary Barlow of Take That, Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child and Louis Walsh of Louis Walsh. Maybe Tulisa from N-Dubz – or even a newly available Cheryl Cole from California. But no public confirmation, no dried ink, and many complications – such as fitting in a summer Take That tour (there are dates on Tuesday and Friday next week to fit around those Birmingham auditions). No doubt, though, everybody at ITV is relaxed about the situation.

Every Wednesday night since she was 12, Lauren Alaina Suddeth belted out a two-hour set at a restaurant just across the Tennessee border from her hometown of Rossville, Ga.

Singing for 2 hours once a week for years is pretty rigorous. If this is true, I’m a bit surprised that Lauren developed vocal problems on the show. I would have thought that after this “training”, her voice would have been in very good shape.

  • Valentin432

The contestants sing for hours every day of the week while on idol.
There are older and more experienced singers who had vocal problems during their season and they all end up very tired at the end of it. I don’t think it matters what they do prior to that, it’s the luck of the draw.

  • mickeybordentwo

I know nothing about singing, but I wonder how many of the vocal problems of Idolettes are stress induced (or worsened).

It’s one thing to be the cute kid singing in a nearby restaurant on Wednesday nights. It’s another to be singing in front of three judges, thousands of people in the theater and millions watching on TV,and that your chance at fame, fortune, and stardom is dependent on how you perform for a minute and a half.

  • OldHag

Moreover, it has been suggested, it was Cole’s heavy northern accent that got her summarily kicked out of America forever – and could I please comment on that?

Aw – I love Cheryl Cole’s accent. Then again, I also love a true slow Southern drawl. Maybe I have no taste.

They did push her to sing higher. Maybe that’s what did it? Plus, her breath technique needs work and if it’s not right then you end up with issues when you push it too far.

I’m kind of surprised that Scotty didn’t lose his voice too given how much further he pushed his voice as the season went on.

The contestants sing for hours every day of the week while on idol. There are older and more experienced singers who had vocal problems during their season and they all end up very tired at the end of it.

Everybody ends up sounding a little ragged by the end. It’s also all those interviews they have to give. The Top 2 get hit particularly hard and always end up sounding worse for wear on the Finale (those hometown visits are killers and then they have to do a bunch of Final 2 interviews). Then they get compared to people who have been resting their voices for weeks.

This year was even worse because they got one less day between Final 3 and Final 2 and they were recording a bunch of other stuff from the sounds of it (Scotty already has at least one other song in the can for his album and I’m sure Lauren does too). I mean, if Kat can lose her voice and her Mom is a vocal coach (she is now a vocal coach on the show and worked with Scotty), then some kid with no formal training can too. Remember that Kat ended up missing three weeks of the tour due to the damage she did to her vocal chords.

  • Lucy1234

The more articles I read about Lauren the more I like her. It really is unfortunate the way some Idol fans made her into this snobby spoiled brat. Everything I have read about her points to just the opposite, that she is a sweet, caring, bubbly teenage girl from a small town. No wonder she got so upset when she read some of things written about her on the Idol blogs. I am so happy that she made it to the final two. She has one of the best voices to come out of the show this season IMO, along with Pia but Lauren also has much more personality IMO. I really hope she becomes a country star, even if it takes her a while. At 16, she’s got plenty of time.

  • car3278sweet

Listening to Lauren sing in Georgia a day or so ago… you could tell she’s still mighty ragged. Especially when she talked – very husky. Hope she has some down time to catch her breath (heh heh) and let that voice rest. That tour is going to take the stuffing out of her though. Singing four or five songs every night plus all the press? Wow.

    What is The Seven?

It’s a pretty lousy show on MTV, lol- but it appears to be part of the Idol NY media tour. It’s on 5 PM Eastern.

  • girlygirl

The Seven is a show on MTV where they briefly talk about the seven top entertainment (usually just music) stories of the day or week. They usually have an interview in the show as well

  • TheOther

The challenge for Lauren: will there be room enough in Country music for 2 teen stars? And will she be able to separate herself from Scotty who has the bigger personality.

Also, will she get enough support from her label? Jimmy Iovine and company also seems to be coming in from another direction with Pia.

  • lili_anne7

The challenge for Lauren: will there be room enough in Country music for 2 teen stars? And will she be able to separate herself from Scotty who has the bigger personality.

Lauren has a bigger personality then Scotty.

  • SajiNoKami

I’m kind of surprised that Scotty didn’t lose his voice too given how much further he pushed his voice as the season went on.

I have a thought on this, personally I think he was holding back most of the competition and he actually had more ranged than he let on. Every now and then Scotty would hint he has more range, but it would be just a word, a note, maybe a single line, then he would bring it back down. Yeah he probably did gain a bit, but really most weeks it felt like he was hold back and I kept thinking: why does he keep holding back? Scotty even said to Beyonce that he had been singing low for most of the competition and wanted to go higher that week. The only song Scotty ever sounds like he is struggling on is Gone, because he sounds like he is trying to put grit and growl into it he may not naturally have. I have noticed he is favoring higher registers now with that show the other day and it sounds more natural. Sometimes that extremely low voice, singing and speaking, comes off as just a voice he does… after all, he did imitate Elvis most of his life.

  • car3278sweet

The challenge for Lauren: will there be room enough in Country music for 2 teen stars? And will she be able to separate herself from Scotty who has the bigger personality.

It appears TPTB are initially marketing these two as a kind of team. I guess it makes sense in that Lauren’s fans will buy Scotty’s music and vice versa. But long term, this isn’t good. For either of them. They need to break out of the “AI country kid duo” and forge their own identity or they are going to be just a novelty.

I don’t know who has the bigger personality, but Scotty did win so I would expect more push for him than Lauren.

  • Tess

I actually think that fans and non-fans, alike, are smart enough to understand that Scotty and Lauren aren’t a two-some, a pair, matching chinese dogs, a two for one deal, attached at the hip, etc. And if I recall Seasons 7 & 8 had a lot of joint promo for the winner and the runner-up…and they were all marketed to the same group. It really isn’t until after the tour is completed that Idols begin to really separate and become their own individual entities. Unless the marketing strategy becomes buy one and get the other free I think what is going on now is part tradition, part expedience, and a bit of “comfort” for both Scotty and Lauren.

Kelly Rowland said: ” Being a judge is never easy, but I promise to be as sternly honest as I can and also encourage everyone.”

    danwootton Dan Wootton
Louis Walsh said: “I’m the last original judge standing. I’m determined to find an act that can win and show the others how it’s done!”

    danwootton Dan Wootton
No mention of Cheryl Cole or Dannii Minogue in ITV and SyCo’s official press release. Bad form? Or just the elephant in the room…

  • TheOther

When it comes to personality, Scotty comes across more approachable, goofy sense of humor, extrovert. Lauren is sweet and posed, but is more reserved.

I was disappointed that Lauren was not part of the girls group performance with Beyonce. Whereas Scotty was right there, singing back-up, dancing, clowning with the other guys.

    Tess says:

Being Chinese-American, I want to know what is meant by the phrase “matching Chinese dogs.” I have never heard that expression before but it sounds a bit offensive. Is this implying that all Chinese look alike?

  • tierbee

I want to know what is meant by the phrase “matching Chinese dogs.”

I pictured a pair of Chows, are they a breed originating in China? That’s what I got from that, anyway, that they aren’t a matching pair of dogs, breed of which originates in China. Then again I had like no sleep so I may see things… askew.

  • Tess

Being Chinese-American, I want to know what you mean by the phrase “Chinese dogs.”

Sorry if it came across that way but my reference was to Chinese guardian lions, known also as Imperial guardian lions, shishi lions, or stone lions in Chinese art and often (incorrectly) called “Foo Dogs” in the West. Pairs of guardian lions are still common decorative and symbolic elements. The lions are always created in pairs, with the male holding the world in his hand and the female with holding a cub. They occur in many types of Chinese pottery and in Western imitations. My family, collectors of oriental art, have always just used the phrase ‘Chinese Dogs’ to relate to constant duos…like couples where you never see one without the other.

  • tierbee

often (incorrectly) called “Foo Dogs” in the West.

Hey, well, I was tangentially almost somewhere in the ballpark since I’ve heard that Chows may or may not be descended from Foo Dogs… lol. I need a nap.

  • lili_anne7

When it comes to personality, Scotty comes across more approachable, goofy sense of humor, extrovert. Lauren is sweet and posed, but is more reserved.

Actually Scotty is more reserved then Lauren. Lauren is a chatterbox and she’s very outgoing. If you saw her on Leno, she does not come off as shy at all. She was there laughing and chatting it up with leno and piers morgan. Scotty is more poised but he has his goofy moments too. At least they both have a sense of humor and they don’t come across as lacking personality during interviews.

  • Pam

Here is Slezak’s Idoloonies interview with Thia:
    LINK

  • Ratna12

I personally think that one of the reasons that Scotty’s voice was still OK till the end was because he felt less stress than Lauren, or maybe even none at all. He just has that personality that nothing seems to bother him.
After one of the songs on Top 2, Ryan was laughing to Scotty saying, “Scotty, just hanging and singing”.

  • katielynne

From all the seasons that I can remember, AI always promotes the top 2 together, so this season is no different. I can remember Kat talking over Taylor almost in every interview, and that was season 5.

  • Kirsten

Sorry if it came across that way but my reference was to Chinese guardian lions,

I knew what you were refering too, but I thought “Aren’t they lions?” They are a very common decorative feature. I believe they are a representation of the “Yin and Yang” concept.

They are always matched and together (and complementing each other), so it’s an apt analogy.

They do tend to send the top 2 out together. Let’s see what happens after this first big week of promo.

  • girlygirl

In S8 Kris & Adam did some post-AI press together and some separately. In S9 Lee & Crystal did the same thing. So I assume some of the press appearances will be Scotty & Lauren together and some will be separate

I did see some article that claimed Scotty said he would like to record some duets with Lauren. If that’s true, I can see UMG & 19 have them do more press together
