Idoloonies: Thia Megia on Scary Vocal Coaches, Dream Idol Themes, and Her Love of…Reggae?

Thia Megia doesn’t mind a little tough love. The American Idol Season 10 finalist says “vocal coach from hell” Peggi Blu is one of the best mentors in the business. Thia is full of other surprises, too. In her Idoloonies interview, the teenage contestant talks about why waiting a few years to audition for Idol was never an option, how the stripped-down arrangement of her semifinal performance of “Out Here on My Own” came to be, and which of her iTunes recordings might turn you into a fan. ATLANTA — Every Wednesday night since she was 12, Lauren Alaina Suddeth belted out a two-hour set at a restaurant just across the Tennessee border from her hometown of Rossville, Ga.

She’d roll through “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and Miranda Lambert’s “Famous in a Small Town.”

The bubbly Suddeth, whose nickname is “LaLa, ” has breezed through round after round of “Idol” with her signature country sound. Her success on the top-rated show is no surprise to the high school sophomore’

Hudson tale too light for $1M

Jennifer Hudson has radically changed her image by dropping more than 80 pounds as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman, but she can’t seem to land a seven-figure book deal.

The Oscar- and Grammy-winning actress/singer and her William Morris agent, Mel Berger, have been shopping a book proposal to major publishers for four years about Hudson’s weight struggle and her eventual transformation from a size 16 to 6.

But while Hudson’s weight struggle and self-help tips are marketable, sources say because of her $1 million-plus demand for the deal, publishers are holding out for the full story about her coping with the horrific slaying of her family.

New dad, future movie star? Ex Idol Constantine Maroulis set to rock Houston with big dreams

Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. They fall in love and they sing ’80s hard rock.

He’s a big dreamer, she’s a small-town girl. Big hair, bodacious and totally awesome tunes make this an ideal fit for American Idol Season Four contestant, Constantine Maroulis.

Maroulis is playing Drew Bowie in Rock of Ages, which starts a Houston run Tuesday night at the Hobby Center in a Theater Under the Stars (TUTS) presentation. CultureMap caught with the busy rocker prior to his visit.

Maybe Americans are just not that into Cheryl Cole

Hello, friends. It has been brought to my attention that something called “Cheryl Cole” has been dismissed from the American version of something called “The X Factor” and replaced with something called “Nicole Scherzinger”. I gather that this dismissal is of interest to humans, because when my editor pitched this story to me he referred to it as the “Cheryl Cole situation” and assured me, rather conspiratorially, that he knew I would have “plenty to say.” Moreover, it has been suggested, it was Cole’s heavy northern accent that got her summarily kicked out of America forever – and could I please comment on that? How do Americans feel about various regional British accents, and which vowel combinations should savvy Brits choose in order to avoid deportation in the future?

Simon Cowell stretched by X Factor judging on both sides of the pond

Simon Cowell is back in Britain, with one or two things on his mind. It’s Britain’s Got Talent week – although the show seems to have just about managed without him on the judging panel – and, more to the point, The X Factor auditions are just about to begin in Birmingham on Wednesday and Thursday. Actually, the auditions were supposed to have begun nearly two weeks ago in Manchester, but somehow it wasn’t proving possible to get everybody in the right place at the right time. Which is probably a fair summary of where the ITV X Factor is right now: a last-minute scramble to get everything done on time.

There are, at the time of writing, no confirmed judges. There have, of course, been plenty of leaks to the media – Gary Barlow of Take That, Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child and Louis Walsh of Louis Walsh. Maybe Tulisa from N-Dubz – or even a newly available Cheryl Cole from California. But no public confirmation, no dried ink, and many complications – such as fitting in a summer Take That tour (there are dates on Tuesday and Friday next week to fit around those Birmingham auditions). No doubt, though, everybody at ITV is relaxed about the situation.
