Interview: Kris Allen Discusses the Making of Thank You Camellia – It’s a big week for Kris Allen. On Tuesday, the singer/songwriter and season eight American Idol winner followed up the release his 2009 self-titled debut with his latest album, Thank You Camellia. The 11-track pop-infused album, which includes his inspiring single “The Vision of Love,” is something that the singer said had “been a long time coming.” Amid his busy album release day schedule, Allen graciously took the time to talk with me about challenging himself as an artist, getting to take a more hands-on approach with the album’s production, and which song off of Thank You Camellia that he’s excited to play live. – Read more at Seattle-PI

Is it too much to ask that Forbes get their facts straight?… I guess so!

  • Anonymous

I find the Forbes article a little depressing in terms of who future winners will be. But that is being discussed everywhere and not just this article. But it offers little hope to contestants from the West Coast, Northeast,  Great Lakes States and the Rust Belt from having a chance to win this…except of course if there are a boy next door cute type wgwg.

  • Anonymous

But then it does talk about how sometimes other finalists do better than the winners.  So I suppose other contestants do have a shot at maybe not winning Idol but having a music career.  That could be why contestants across the country keep auditioning in droves, they get the exposure and the chance to make the top 24 and perform on TV and then hopefuly get the exposure and the good pay that comes with a tour if they make top 10.

Awesome time-lapsed video of the crowd that James Durbin drew at Rock on the Range on Sunday, James was first up:

I worry that Britney may not be in the best shape emotionally for XFactor, I hope I am wrong.  I just hope this show does not cost her health and stability.

  • justmefornow

Cool pic from the show last night at the Hard Rock in Biloxi
    http://instagr.am/p/LCTvhvyPc2/

And here’s a new RITD video from Rock on The Range last Sunday. I like the interesting overhead view.

And lol at the crowd surfers that appear twice.

  • justmefornow

We  posted that overhead video at the same time. Ha!
Don’t you just love those two crowd surfers? lol

  • iFoundIt

Elise has been very upfront with her support of Phillip.  She made no bones that she wanted him to win.  Their duet of Somebody That I Used To Know has been very popular on You Tube.

  • Anonymous

Oops…we both posted the same video of James singing at Rock on the Range at the same time.  I like that view too, the overhead view.

I’ll say it once again, Wind Up…if you are reading this…James needs to go in an all rock direction now.  The next album should be all hard rock/metal, and they need to get him more exposure at festivals like this.

    And yes…love the crowd surfers…awesome!

  • justmefornow

    Amen!!

  • Anonymous

Did you check out the video they posted of the time lapsed view of the crowd James drew?

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

I liked the Elise/Phil duet just fine and I do love that song, but is their version really that popular?  Not saying they shouldn’t do it on tour if given the opportunity, but I didn’t even think it was the best duet the night they performed it on the show, let alone something fans would be going crazy over for tour. I liked the Jess/Josh duet better.

  • justmefornow

    Yes, very cool!

  • fuzzywuzzy

I agree, but last year’s shows are available for viewing so she should know what she’s in for from Simon and L.A.

hahaha I think Adam is bored! But I love it! He´s explaining his songs on twitter!
    So far:

    @adamlambert
Trespassing: not following any of these lame ass rules. Look out bitches. ;)

Cuckoo: yeah that’s right. I’m nuts. But damn it’s fun, you coming along for the ride?

Shady: feeling loose now, gonna get my swerve on. Feeling nasty.

Never Close Our Eyes: let’s all stay in the moment and stay open to all possibilities. We have the power to create our reality.

Naked Love: come on folks! Relax!! Chill! It ain’t that deep- take a chance and express how u want. Strip away all the BS and get real.

Broken English: I’m trying to read u.. It’s confusing but soooo mysteriously sexy. Maybe words aren’t the key. Communication through touch.

Underneath: I’m doing my best. Underneath my best game face it’s still not always easy. I have my demons and they are powerful.

Chokehold: your playing games w me and it’s putting me though it! But I’m addicted to the heartache and drama. I can’t get enough.

Pop that lock: is about being fierce. Basking in the glow of light you have the power to put out in the universe. That’s the key!

The “she” in Kickin In is about a guy friend of mine. Ya know? That one Banjee fishy queen you all call a she. Mary please. I know Banjee and Fishy are sorta opposites but my fav queens are that glorious half and half. they can just flip depending on the song. But it’s totally also about that crazy fruit fly who’s always stealing yo thunder by last call. Lol

Outlaws of Love:road to equality ain’t easy. Sometimes we get sad. All the hate because of the love we wanna share. But we are gonna be ok.

Runnin: when I don’t follow my heart, i get dark. vicious cycle that only I can pull myself out of. We all have the power to affect change.

How do we know the cultural importance of American Idol?

Attaching its name to a vague discussion of hackneyed business-guru concepts can get a writer space on a major business magazine’s site. Take that, X Factor!

Here are last night’s ratings from tvbythenumbers.

FOX was the number one network among adults 18-49, while CBS was on top in total viewers.

On FOX, the season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance earned a 2.4 18-49 rating, down 27% from last year’s premiere (which earned a 3.3 rating).

On ABC, the series premiere of talent competition  Duets  earned a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating. For comparison purposes, the opening episodes of The Voice and The X Factor earned 4.6 and a 4.4, respectively.

    8:00PM
    FOX So You Think You Can Dance -P (8-10PM) 2.4 8 6.232
    ABC Duets -P (8-10PM) 1.7 5 6.692

  • Nele621

I wonder who would win: a cute, straight WGWG from Calif or a cute gay WGWG from the south.

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

Duets may be a decent show, though I didn’t watch last night so I have no opinion on that front, but it’s going to struggle simply for the fact it’s yet another singing reality show.  The home audience has to be fatigued by now.  Especially with it gearing up like one day after the Idol finale.

  • Tess

Also…as much as some of us may think, the celebrity singers aren’t truly “household” names to the general public and since the show hasn’t gotten the promo or the opening time slots of The Voice or X-Factor it isn’t going to pull in the casual fan.  Just like The Sing-Off this show will come and go without much fanfare.

    Hello Everyone,

Apart from coming here to read about Adam:-) I thank MJ for posting interesting articles-the second reason to come here!:-)

Branding or should it be Re-branding? As a business there is very few aspects of AI I would follow. But it sets the trend for other music reality shows to follow-so respect to AI:-)

My brand is all about ‘connection and meaning’.

However,I believe that AI is long overdue for Re-branding if it is to survive any longer. How they  do it depends on if they have their finger on the pulse of the audience and correctly guide the contestant-its a powerful measurement of success or failure. Its no good prescribing the same antibiotics you will gradually become immune:-)

This has been said too many times so I wont go on about it.I decline to mention contestants. I want them all to do well:-)

    Enjoy your day;-)

Last night was graduation night at all the seven school districts in this county, (tonight for all the city school systems.)

Add to that two local outdoor music festivals (one free) going on in the area and afterparties, the first night of the local government installations four day weekend and I think it a lot of people were away from their televisions .

I would guess that this area isnt’t alone in the seasonal “distractions” . It seems like a very bad time of the year to premiere anything.

BTW Lauren Alaina will be the closing mainstage act for Chattanooga’s huge Riverbend Festival. Yes I know it is basically her hometown festival, but it is still pretty cool as she was playing small stages in the nine day festival just two years ago. It is a good gig for her as even people (such as myself) who don’t follow her will be at the venue to watch the major dispaly of fireworks launched from the bridge at the close of the festival. Riverbend usually draws several hundreds of thousands of people each year.

lol TMZ at trying to make a story out of a throw away comment. Kris’ face when they asked him about Howard Stern was funny.

Kris is in Arkansas for a brief moment (he got there last night, he has a show in MD tomorrow) and is doing a couple of radio performances as well as a cd signing at his local Wal-Mart.

American Idol: Why do Southerners Always Seem To Win?

Phillip Phillips’ American Idol win might be owed to the Georgia-born singer’s roots, but it’s not a ‘southern problem’
    ———
Great article here about why southerners seem to win most of the time.  Interestingly, it’s written in the UK…

That isn’t a good rating for Duets. I wonder what sort of rating ABC was hoping for?

That is an interesting article in The Guardian but it misses the essence of the matter.

Southerners are a musical people. When Scots-Irish lyricism, musicality and rhythms met West African lyricism, musicality and rhythms the world of music was transformed. Bluegrass in the mountains, blues in the Delta, gospel in the churches, jazz in New Orleans and country on the small farms were the results. In other words roots music.

I saw where Gregg Allman said recently he didn’t like the term Southern Rock because it was redundant since all roots music is Southern. It was like saying rock rock.

Great music comes from everywhere. Most of my all-time faves are from Cali. I would never say Southerners were more musical than anyone else but we are a musical people.

Maybe it’s just me, but I was really disappointed with that Forbes article. I was hoping for some in-depth branding wisdom or an analytical case study or some novel insight applied to AI… not nickel-and-dime observations I could have written myself.

TMZ is very bipolar about Idol. On the one hand, they act as Nigel’s mouthpiece. On the other hand, they crap on all of the actual Idols as much as possible.

But hey, they mentioned that he has a new album

  • http://twitter.com/MoriaPolonius Moria Polonius

That’s not bipolar. That’s tabloid. It’s not like any of those have any allegiances apart from sensation.

  • Anonymous

I did watch the video.  What happens is that Kris is going through an airport and focusing on navigating himself through the security, etc. while the TMZ reporter is yelling questions at him.  Kris basically grunts noncommittal answers in return.

So, this leads up to the reporter asking, “Maybe they should put it (AI) out of it’s misery?”  At which point Kris, who obviously isn’t listening replies, “I dunno.  Maybe.”  As he ascends the escalator.

It’s really a non-story delivered in typical TMZ fashion.  But at least they mentioned his album.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4PLQMZV4QX7CHQCAUVXJBXYUCM wicked

Listen to the clip. He didn’t say it was time to pull the plug. As Kris was walking through the airport TMZ told him AI ratings were low & asked Kris why, he casually said “I don’t know, man – maybe it’s just their time” as he went up the escalater. That was it – TMZ made up the headline and misquoted Kris – they love getting hits more than accuracy.

Interesting article from the NYT- I do like Jon Carmonica the critic.  He writes intelligently (sometimes to the extreme, lol) and isn’t afraid to give his opinion.
although he likes Joshua the best from AI 11 he also says that Phillip is the best WGWG of the last five; very interesting.  I didn’t read it in the headlines yesterday so am posting here.

“Mr. Phillips is the fifth fundamentally sensitive white male singer in a row to win, which probably indicates stagnation in the “Idol” voting base more than it does a resurgent interest in tepidity and middle-of-the-road rock. It is no small thing, and worth noting, that of these white men he is easily the best, not a dullard nor a mook nor a boy made good.”

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/25/arts/television/american-idol-winner-phillip-phillips-modesty.html

Thanks for posting that! The video looks very intriguing and Adam looks wonderful (as always).

LOL. “Mr. Caramanica” is a pretentious contrarion – he loathes the popular on principal, and champions the quirky for cred. I don’t dislike Phillip or anything, and I do think he is a talented guy, but “Mr Caramanica” lost me when he described his voice as showing “real range and power”. Ok then.

When I did an Essay on, “Music as Popular Culture,”  American Idol was included in my discussion.   It could be a part of Sociology, Psychology, Pop Culture, and Business courses.
