Crystal Bowersox’s Friend Calls ‘American Idol’ Success ‘Surreal’

MAUMEE, Ohio — This time last year, Nathan Woodward could step out of the kitchen at the Village Idiot bar/ pizza restaurant and walk right up to the front of the stage to watch Crystal Bowersox perform. Now, even when he flies out to Los Angeles to see her rock the stage on “American Idol, ” he can’t get nearly as close as he could back in the good old pre-fame days of 2009.

Woodward, 36, met Bowersox two years ago at the Idiot, where he bartends and makes pizzas on the weekend and where, on a recent Tuesday night, he was sitting in on organ with the house band after a crowd gathered to cheer Bowersox on during the Frank Sinatra-themed performance night.

Idol Meter’s final weekly scores are up

“Michael [Lynche] was clearly on borrowed time, from the moment the judges saved him, ” Ken Barnes writes in this week’s final Idol Meter update, “and he did well to last this long. Of course, sheer talent was the main reason, and a case could be easily made that he deserved to last another couple of weeks.”

Crystal Bowersox, of course, remains at the top of the Meter. “Not a whole lot of suspense once Lee and Casey were declared safe, ” Ken writes. “Crystal’s survival was a no-brainer.”

Lee Dewyze Supporters Psyched For His ‘American Idol’ Homecoming

MT. PROSPECT, Illinois — It’s not that Lee Dewyze’s supporters are feeling cocky, but when they — from his high school principal to the drummer in his band to his old boss at Mt. Prospect Paint — were asked if they’re planning to go to his homecoming parade and rally on Friday, the answer was a resounding, triumphant, “Yes!”

And that was days, and hours, before Dewyze got the news on Wednesday night that he would be coming home after making it into the “American Idol” top three. When the verdict was finally read, the crowd of 100-plus supporters at the Blues Bar in Mt. Prospect erupted into joyous clapping, shouting, whistles and hugs as they all scrambled to figure out who they needed to call in order to get tickets to Friday night’s big event.

‘American Idol’ Experts: Michael Lynche Done In By Song Selection

In one of the toughest weeks to call yet, MTV News’ go-to “American Idol” experts were thrown for a loop by Wednesday night’s elimination. They both bet on the demise of cougar-bait cowboy Casey James, who toyed with self-parody with his ode to mother lovers, “Mrs. Robinson.” But it was brawny Michael Lynche who got the boot.

On the one hand, MJ Santilli, webmaster of the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com, was not surprised Lynche was eliminated, only that he was still around.

“Actually, it’s pretty amazing how long he stuck around, considering he was originally slated to go out in ninth place, ” she said, noting that the judges were not impressed with his cover of Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There, ” and, apparently, neither were viewers.

‘Idol’ winner drops into Ohio

When Taylor Hicks won American Idol in 2006, he probably never imagined that he’d one day be descending upon a stage night after night from inside a giant ice cream cone.

That’s what he’s doing eight performances a week in his starring role as Teen Angel, singing Beauty School Dropout in the national tour of the Broadway musical Grease, now at PlayhouseSquare’s Palace Theatre.

”It’s definitely a grand entrance, ” Hicks said. ”It’s over-the-top. It’s kind of like rock and roll heaven.”

The Next Simon Cowell Is…

As American Idol’s ninth season lurches to a close, its ratings teetering dangerously, its producers, at some of their lowest moments, might be tempted to recall the words of P.G. Wodehouse’s protagonist in The Return of Jeeves. Gazing upon the misbegotten construction of Towcester Abbey, the hero muses: “You know what this house wants? An atom bomb, dropped carefully on the roof of the main banqueting hall.”

Daughtry now friends with his idols

It’s been nearly four years since American Idol changed his life and Chris Daughtry still can’t believe his luck.

After being booted in the semifinals of the reality television show in 2006, he could have returned to being a struggling musician. Daughtry may have the self-possession and belief in his own talent to think that he belongs in the world of arena rockers and million-sellers, but he’s under no illusion about the process that got him there.

“It’s luck, ” he admits. “There’s no planning for this, no preparation, especially in this industry. We’re fortunate to have done as well as we have, but we’re also really lucky that the fans want us to succeed. We’ve managed to sell a million records, and it’s all because of them.”

The Great ‘DWTS’ Debate: Does Nicole Scherzinger Have an Unfair Advantage?

Now that the Pussycat Doll is inching closer to that coveted mirrorball trophy, it’s time to revisit this season-long controversy of “Is she too experienced” to be on ‘Dancing with the Stars‘ with a closer look.

Fans, bloggers, and the media have had their panties in a bunch over the fact that Nicole Scherzinger, the heads-above-the-rest frontrunner, has too much dancing experience to have been even booked on Season 10 of ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ The show has typically been a showcase for celebrities with no, or little, dance experience to spread their wings in a new area so we can watch them grow week after week.
