Idol Headlines for 05/13/10 – The Evening Edition

Big Mike shut out from lifting more people on live TV

With so few people on the American Idol stage left to pick up, Michael Lynche, aka Big Mike, got picked off last night. Was it his rendition of “Will You Be There”? Not according to him. Blame the teen girls!

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Big Mike! After you got voted off last night, you seemed to be walking around telling everyone it was okay. Did you feel like you needed to calm everyone else and not get upset yourself?

Michael Lynche: ‘You just never know when it’s your turn to go’

Michael Lynche may have missed the birth of his daughter, Laila Rose, back in January, when he was in Hollywood trying to make American Idol. Now that he has finished his run on the show, he’s making up for lost time. He has the 4-month-old with him as he does interviews. Laila Rose makes her presence known, cooing and snuffling, occasionally letting out a cry.

“When I was singing, they always told me that, back in the room, she perked up and watched the television, ” Michael says. “And sometimes I would be singing to her, my song of the week, and she’d be making noise right back at me.”

Lee DeWyze: From Mount Prospect to Hollywood and home again

When Lee DeWyze left Mount Prospect for Hollywood, he had no apartment. No job. No game plan for his future.

“I got kicked out of high school, but that’s totally not who I am now, ” said DeWyze on his “American Idol” audition tape.

“I totally know this is what I’m supposed to do. There is no backup plan for me.”

Less than a year later, it’s looking like he might not need one.

Is Lee DeWyze’s advance to the Final 3 payback for Chris Daughtry’s early dismissal?

When it comes to “American Idol, ” practically every die-hard fan of the show has a favorite contestant who went home too soon — personally speaking, Michael Johns, Alexis Grace and Siobhan Magnus come to mind, not to mention universal choice Jennifer Hudson. But for the millions of Chris Daughtry supporters, his fourth-place finish on season 5 was a downright “Idol” travesty. What did in the North Carolina rocker? Elvis night, and a double dose of The King, no less, with renditions of “Suspicious Minds” and “A Little Less Conversation.”

Idol Wants Artists, Not Contestants

Time was, there were no artists on Idol. “Art” has typically been the province of rock, and the show used to so unabashedly embrace its poptimist slant that Simon once cheerfully warned an auditioning Seger acolyte, “You may have to sell yourself out a bit.”

But now Idol is making the word its own, selling out its celebration of the commercial and aspiring to an aura of indie authenticity. All of Season 9 has set up this sea change, a deliberate campaign to legitimize Idol as more than just a music machine, and to remind viewers that the lines between pop and rock and art and schlock are about as real as reality TV.

Interview: We Are The Fallen

We Are The Fallen have officially begun haunting modern rock with their debut album, Tear the World Down, out now.

Tear the World Down conjures a heavy gothic hum that’s reminiscent of both HIM and Type O Negative, however, We Are the Fallen’s lush orchestral strings and guitars fuel their flight into a realm all their own. At the center of the band’s epic sound is vocalist Carly Smithson.

Can Fox Hang on to Its Lead?

Kevin Reilly, Fox Broadcasting’s entertainment president, is racing to find new shows. His worry is that the network’s buoyant ratings could sink once Simon Cowell, the caustic talent judge and star of American Idol, leaves the successful singing competition this month after nine seasons.

The Fox programming chief wants to remake a network that has relied on Idol, hour-long dramas, and cartoon comedies to lead in the crucial 18-to-49-year-old viewer category for almost six years. In addition to Cowell’s exit from Idol, TV’s most watched show, Fox is losing Kiefer Sutherland and his popular thriller, 24. The network needs fresh fare, especially because 18-to-49 ratings for both Idol and a medical drama, House, are slumping.

When asked if she was going to be a judge on Simon Cowell’s “X-Factor, ” Paula purposefully dodged the question. “That’s so cute, ” she said, pointing at a dog. “It’s like my Chihuahua. Did I tell you I was gonna buy a new Chihuahua?”
