Idol Headlines for 05/12/12

Carrie Underwood and Scotty McCreery perform at the Grand Ole Opry tonight.

Carrie Underwood and her husband, Mike Fisher will appear on Oprah’s Next Chapter on  OWN on 5/20 9 pm.

Exclusive: Carrie Underwood on Marriage: “Time Apart Is Important” – After 22 months of marriage, Carrie Underwood tells Us Weekly Mike Fisher has grown accustomed to her “craziness!” But before the Canadian hockey player pledged to spend his life with her forever, Underwood — whose exes include Tony Romo, Travis Stork and Chace Crawford — “had my share of loves gone wrong,” she says. “But I couldn’t ask for a better husband and best friend. I’m finally happy in love, so there’s a reason some things don’t work out.” – Read more at US Magazine

Carrie Underwood’s ‘Blown Away’ Debuts at No.1 in Canada – Superstar Carrie Underwood’s fourth album, Blown Away, debuts at No. 1 on Canada’s Top 100 Country and Top 200 all-genre sales charts this week. Upon its debut, Blown Away was immediately certified GOLD in Canada. The album also debuted at No. 1 on the US sales charts this week. This is Carrie’s best first week in Canada across all previous albums. Its first single, “Good Girl,” bullets to No.2 on the Canadian country charts and is also certified GOLD. Blown Away also debuted at No.4 on the ARIA Album Chart this week giving Carrie her best first week showing in Australia. In support of the release, Carrie is scheduled for multiple upcoming television appearances in both the US and Canada. On Tuesday, May 15 she’ll perform on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars.” – CountryMusicIsLove

Is ‘X Factor’ The Right Move For Britney Spears? – “I think it is a good move, actually,” Entertainment Weekly writer Tanner Stransky told MTV News. “I think she has so many people on her team watching what she’s doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it’s the right move right now.” This new role certainly has many advantages. It keeps Spears in the public eye while keeping her close to her family, and it will most likely bring in the big ratings that “X Factor” and Simon Cowell are hoping for. Yet there are some experts who are a little wary of Spears taking a spot on the panel, since over the years, the pop star has been noticeably withdrawn from press, rarely giving on-camera interviews. – Read more at MTV

Clay Aiken’s Mom: Mother’s Day Revelations With Faye Parker – Not all of us know what it is like to have a celebrity son or daughter, but it’s interesting to pick the brain of a mother who has shared the “stage” with a famous offspring. And who better to talk to than Faye Parker (or better known as Clay Aiken’s mother)? Parker opened up about her son’s sudden fame in 2003 (when he was named runner-up on American Idol); how she’s treated by his fans; and how she felt when Aiken told her he was gay. She also gave us her take on her son’s appearance on Celebrity Apprentice and a few photos of her and Aiken, which you can see in the slideshow below. – Read more at Huffington Post

Clay Aiken is on “Face The Nation” tomorrow (Sunday) and on Wendy Williams on 5/18.

Wish I could be at the Opry tonight!!

By the way, thought I’d share this…it’s touching and not, this time, because of Scotty per se but because of the others involved…

One Direction are in Sweden, recording their sophomore album. Looks like they are working again with masterminds behind WMYB and One Thing.

Guy on the left is Savan Kotecha, songwriter, Syco’s A&R  person and now vocal producer and vocal coach on X Factor USA.

Adam is everywhere, even in Time magazine… So far, very good reviews… Just the “selling” dilemma still a hurdle…
I’m nervous about second week sales.  NCOE, I like the song a lot, don’t understand why it hasn’t done better.

  • windmills

Congrats Carrie not only on Blown Away’s #1 debut in Canada but also the #4 debut on Australia’s ARIA album charts! She hasn’t even done promo in Australia for Blown Away yet.

Should be a good Opry show tonight! Brad Paisley is also playing the Opry tonight so there’s a good chance we’ll get Carrie singing Cupid’s Got A Shotgun with Brad on guitar and possibly another Remind Me performance. Here’s the Opry schedule for Scotty and Carrie (all times are Central):

    7:30 – 8:00

    Mike Snider
    John, Jonathan & Nathan McEuen
    Scotty McCreery

    8:00 – 8:30
    Bill Anderson
    Carrie Underwood

    10:00 – 10:30

Reviews don’t mean much good or bad. Sellingwise, well the album and songs don’t really have a wide appeal, I can understand why fans love it and some critics but as someone who is on the fence the material is not very instant or interesting. As far NCOE goes, it will become a hit just not as big as WDYWFM, The song is just getting started.

I have no clue if anyone has seen this, but this video is so sweet and awesome. It is to Kelly’s “Stronger”, and it is from the Seattle Children’s Hospital, where cancer patients and nurses and some doctors participate in lip-syncing the song. So basically, a Seattle Children’s Hospital music video to “Stronger”. LOL Get ready to fall in love with it and enjoy it. Thought I share with you all on a lazy Saturday afternoon. ;)

Warning: You may get a bit teary-eyed while watching this.

I love that video.  The other day Kelly recorded a message and sent it to them.  I do hope she gets a chance to get up there and meet them.  If not in the very near future, I bet she stops by there when the summer tour starts since it’s beginning up in Washington.

Reviews don’t mean much good or bad.

They actually do in a way.  While most music buyers probably don’t bother to read the reviews, quality of the album that gets multiple great reviews isn’t apt to get lost on people who hear it and judge it for themselves.  The same elements that turn reviewers on — or off — are often those most likely to affect reception by the general public as well.

Wendy William’s show website only has this posted for 5/18:

    Celebrity Apprentice.
It’s the season finale of “Celebrity Apprentice” and the two finalists are here.

Are you spoiling that Clay is one of the finalists? What is the source of your information?

What a delight to find Scotty mentioned in the headlines after quite some time and better yet to have him back in the music business. I´ve missed him. Sounds like a great night at the Opry. I sure wouldn´t mind taking a little trip over there  and see Scotty, Brad and Carrie performing.

  • Kitwana

I am absolutely stunned by the lack of media coverage of David Cook leaving RCA. Not even pick ups or reports based on The Hollywood Reporter stories. It’s not only the mainstream media but the blogs which are silent. This may be the canary in the coal mine pointing to the declining pop culture relevance of AI. When the story of the champion from 4 years ago leaving his label cannot generate even a dozen stories on Google news, that can’t be a good sign. The show lost water cooler relevance years ago but at this point, it seems like the public just does not care.

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

So I’m in Nashville for family stuff…can you just show up at the opry or do you have to buy tickets?

Michael Sarver has a new single on iTunes, which he tweeted about yesterday (? I think). And in another show of support among the S8 idols, Kris just tweeted about it.

    # Do yourself a favor and check out my friend @michaelsarver1 new song out on iTunes. You won’t regret it. … http://say.ly/DUW3ir0

People being dropped from their labels rarely makes the news.  Last year, people were going back and forth for months over whether or not Ciara was still with Jive, and that was months after the two sides had parted ways.

  • Anonymous

Scotty has some friends with him at the Opry tonight. Including Gabi:)

  • Kitwana

Elliegirl, I think Idols leaving their labels do get wide coverage. When Archie left Jive, it was picked up by AP, Reuters, EW and even Perezhilton, amongst many others, including Asian media. That was just one year ago. As I said, the lack of coverage of a former winner leaving his label is a canary in the coal mine for American Idol.

  • Chris

Good.  The more he brings Gabi out, the sooner some of his more “Scotty fever” teens finally realize, Lauren is not a threat.  Go spend your energy throwing darts at Gabi for “stealing your man.”  LOL

Video: Kris Allen Live Performance at Exclusive Listening Party in Los Angeles

One Direction are in Sweden, recording their sophomore album. Looks like
they are working again with masterminds behind WMYB and One Thing.

Wasting no time, I see. They are supposedly recording another Kelly co-penned track.  Back in April at her LA show, this person had a meet and greet with her and posted this on twitter:

    Jess Nguyen Phuong ? @npjessica

@1DNorthAmerica just met kelly clarkson and she told me that 1D will be recording another one of her songs!!

Could be a coincidence or not, but a new song was registered on ASCAP right before then titled “It Doesn’t Really Matter Anymore” and was speculated to be the track that Kelly mentioned.  Nothing more has been mentioned about it but strangely enough just a little bit ago on twitter some 1D fan accounts are running with it being the song they’ve recorded and that it’s in the running for first single.  Not a clue where they got their info from but it kind of sounds like a case of a few speculations being strung together to make some “facts” to me.  Time will tell, I guess.

I think media only cares about artists who have been relevant lately. It’s kinda like “what have you done for me lately?” Scotty still gets media coverage about picking a college, prom, and baseball because he has a platinum album and has been successful since he’s been off of Idol. Ex-Idols have media coverage sustained years after their season ended by being relevant or people need to at least care about them. At this point, I don’t think many of the media care about Cook anymore.

Media only reports “celebrities” who are relevant, popular, are successful recently, or people care about. Media has just moved on since it’s another dropped Idol winner. Media doesn’t report about Taylor, Ruben, Lee, & many of the other dropped Idol winners because there’s too many of them now.

New vid out of James Durbin’s show at the historic Surf Ballroom last night. He is rockin and loose. I can’t wait to hear the 45sound vid of Higher Than Heaven but that will probably take a couple days. James has like a 10day straight stretch of zigzagging across the country performing.

The ARIA site hasn’t been updated yet to reflect sales for the tracking week that ran May 4 to May 10 (Blown Away was released May 4 in Australia and New Zealand). So, I’d guess you’ll be able to see Carrie’s Blown Away at #4 in Australia when it updates :)

There must be a covers theme at the Opry tonight, maybe for the GAC taping which was confirmed by Bill Anderson. After Scotty’s cover of Garth’s The Dance, Carrie did an absolutely gorgeous cover of Alan Jackson’s Remember When. She also sang Good Girl and Undo It. I really wish any song other than Undo It were her go-to uptempo song but she sounded fantastic on all 3 songs.

James is really improving – like the blond hair – hope he keeps it – looks trimmer and in great shape – crazy performance – boy’s having fun.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

Carrie is in a very good place and has been for several years–there is very little if any competition in County music for women.   All the greats are older than the hills and few are touring or even making music these days.   There would be something very wrong if she wasn’t getting the attention she is getting.   She also had a foothold before Miranda came along, so it all good!  The pop music field is overrun with artists at the moment unlike Country.   Besides Carrie is living the American dream–beautiful, good marriage making millions.   I also think she deserves to be exactly where she is!

  • windmills

Enough already: Carrie is in a very good place and has been for several years–there is very little if any competition in County music for women.

Wrong. You’ve confused the deck being stacked against women at country radio with a lack of competition for women in the genre. You must have missed the many discussions in the numbers threads here with the many articles posted about how country radio plays 1 song by a female for every 4 or 5 by a male and the disadvantages females at the format face.

When Carrie won AI in 2005 there were a lot of young country women competing for space at country radio, including but not limited to Miranda Lambert, Julie Roberts, Katrina Elam, Shelly Fairchild, Catherine Britt, and Jessica Andrews. You don’t even have to take my word for it, check out this USA Today article on Miranda Lambert from March 2005 talking about the scene at the time.

That doesn’t count Ashley Monroe, Emily West, Julianne Hough, Jewel, Ashton Shepherd, Mallary Hope, Sunny Sweeney, Lauren, Jana Kramer, Kristen Kelly and other females who have or have had major label country deals in the last few years and tried to crack country radio. There’s many more trying from indie labels (Katie Armiger is one of the bigger names among those).

Enough already: All the greats are older than the hills and few are touring or even making music these days.

Reba, Martina, Trisha Yearwood, and Lee Ann Womack are older than the hills? They’re barely old enough to be my mom so that statement gives me the sads :( Reba just got herself a new sitcom greenlit at ABC and is just 18 months away from her most recent #1 at country radio. Martina just had a t10 hit off an album she released last October. Trisha’s getting some new music together that she’ll release on the back of her Food Network show and Lee Ann Womack’s getting a new album ready too. They’re not killing it as far as sales or airplay but they’re certainly making music.

vu_hoa: I thought Scotty sounded very good on The Dance. He had some nice vibrato going on at times that I haven’t heard from him before and got a great response from the crowd. The Opry stream isn’t always that great (it can mess with pitch, make the voice sound thin, and the mix isn’t always very good) so if he sounded as good as he did on that then I’m sure he’ll sound even better in live video or the TV feed if we get to see that.

Brad brought Scotty out to sing Celebrity during Brad’s 2nd set tonight. The crowd responded great to that.

Carrie and Brad sang Remind Me twice tonight. Here’s one picture via @JennaTanner. It’s hard to tell from the stream but I thought the 2nd performance of it was especially good. The 1st one got a standing ovation from the Opry crowd, don’t know about the 2nd one.

Carrie’s 2nd show set: Blown Away, Thank God For Hometowns, Leave Love Alone, all sounded great. No Cupid’s Got A Shotgun, surprisingly but at least we’ve gotten 3 live performances of that one already.

I doubt that people notice if the reviews are positive or negative, but what does help is that the review lets people know that someone is about to release music.  Positive or negative, it’s just another form of promotion that puts the artists name out to the public.  It’s a lot better than no reviews at all.

  • too-cool-for-school

Haha, I posted about that a bit ago too! It’s funny but not very nice. I tried to remove it but I don’t know how, LOL. xD

  • Anonymous

    Whoa, how do you quote?

Anyway, yeah, I wanted to fix it too but I got lazy and forgot how to fix it anyway. It seems like most times a contestant’s pic shows up on Wikipedia it disappears out of nowhere until they’re off the show. I assume it’s a legal thing.

Seems that Haley and Kris are in the same boat on that. :( I hope some shows get arranged for them soon. It seems weird that there is nothing official yet but maybe that is how it usually goes? It doesn’t seem like it should be that way, though, assuming their label wants them to be successful.

I would definitely buy tickets! As would a lot of people.

  • Anonymous

Usually tours aren’t scheduled until after an album is released, because the sales are how management figures out what the demand is.  Tours are scheduled by the artist and their managers, not by the labels.

Does Leave Love Alone getting performed a lot during the promotions period mean that it probably won’t be a single? I can’t remember which songs were performed during Carrie’s promotion rounds for Play On.

I hope we get a live performance of Wine After Whiskey soon. Love that song!

  • djafan

I was also surprised with Cook being the winner and all.  I stopped watching the show after season 7.  The shows manipulations became so blatant that year and I being on the public stopped caring about the show.

  • djafan

David A wasn’t dropped but THR picked up erroneous info and ran with it and it exploded in the media. I was receiving google alerts by the hundreds worldwide.  Interesting for sure.

  • Anonymous

Well maybe…If it came down to her touring with a fellow Idol alum then I’d personally prefer Kris.

I wouldn’t mind if she toured with Adam a little bit though. Just not for an entire tour.

  • Anonymous

Ah okay. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I’m just worried. My track record for seeing my female Idol faves live after the Idols Live tour isn’t great. In fact…I haven’t seen ANY of them on their solo tours. Not even Kelly.

Let’s just hope that Haley(and Kris)do well enough to get a nice tour.

  • Anonymous

Yes – Kris would probably be a better fit.

  • Anonymous

They all need to move on from the Idol tag, and touring together would reinforce it, so I really don’t think that it is a good idea for any of them.
If it was the only option it would be better than nothing, but only as the last resort.

  • Anonymous

True. I don’t mind seeing Idols tour with each other from time to time though. Those kinds of tours can be a lot of fun. Especially if you’re a big fan of both singers.

I agree. Also. If Haley and Kris were to tour together it would be too much awesomeness for me to handle. lol

It would be so cool if Haley could open for her lovely and talented fellow label mate Lady Gaga. Her music would be exposed to a large and diverse group of people too. Probably won’t happen though since their musical styles are far too different, and Gaga tickets are almost impossible to get as well. Which would make seeing Haley difficult for fans who don’t act quick enough. Also. Gaga’s on her world tour right now and probably won’t be touring in the U.S. until next year.

Scotty was great on the Opry tonight….especially his cover of Garth Brooks “The Dance”. He also sang “Water Tower Town” as was expected, but “The Dance” was unexpected and beautiful…to cop a Steven phrase. It really brought out the emotions in Scotty’s voice. The response from the sold out crowd was great.

He’s not there yet, but it brought to mind Randy Jackson’s comment that he was approaching the Garth level….that he is!

Carrie and Brad were great, too.

  • Anonymous

I have to agree about James, the thinner he gets the more the blond hair suits him.  James is really looking and sounding the part of a rocker on this current tour and I’m impressed at how well his voice has been holding up, he never holds back except for acoustic performances (where he should be).

It’s more than just his band gelling too, his identity is starting to emerge.  He’s a damn quick learner, they are changing up the songs so much, experimenting, seeing what sticks, etc.  That’s what paying your dues does for you.

If there is a revival in rock music and he evolves to this fully-formed artist we are starting to see, he’s going to be in a nice position to ride the wave.

  • Anonymous

I agree with everything you said!!!! Scotty’s cover of Garth Brook’s “THE DANCE” was especially amazing! His duet with Brad “Celebrity” was a pleasant surprise..

And not because of Scotty but it does help explain why he wanted to return to his community to complete his last year of high school.  As a former teacher I am in awe of Garner’s principal; his grace, humility and obvious sincere affection for all of his students are a shining example of what educators can be.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AGWO435FL6UN2ICRVTFLWRJZSA Lexie

That’s what I meant when I said it was touching and not because of Scotty per se (even though he, once again, showed incredible grace for an 18 year old…I’d like to hope my kids would be that sensitive).  The principal just amazed me…

Ah, I wish I was a late night person and had stayed up to hear the second sets from the Opry last night!  Will be searching for vids:))  And waiting for GAC to air this in June:))

Kitwana, I am stunned by the lack of media coverage of David Cook leaving RCA too. He was a AI winner just 4 years ago. I keep waiting for more media outlets to pick up Cook’s parting ways with his label story but it is not happening.  It does seem like the public does not care any longer. The story of Archie leaving Jive and leaving for a mission was all over the media.

  • BonnieDee

It just seems wrong to me that it’s the 21st century and Country Radio is playing only a few women, and percentage wise playing so many more guys.  It’s like we regressed 50 years.

  • BonnieDee

I agree, but David is so talented and I don’t think this is the end for him.  Just a bump in the road.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucie-Laniel/909560091 Lucie Laniel

Scotty was simply amazing last night at the Opry. His cover of the “The Dance” was totally a surprise and a delight to hear. The audience  seemed to welcome him with open arms and they stayed until the very end since he was the last performer of the night. They even interviewed him after he finished singing. He is going places for sure.

Also after coming out to sing Celebrity, Brad repeated “Welcome to the club kid”.
They really seem to have a good bond those two.

The out-of-country vote theory is like the Obama birther theory – and probably a lot of the same people believe it LOL!

I have a friend in Canada who votes on Idol but she had to purchase a US phone line. She’s been doing it for years – just a major Idol  fan. If she could find a way to save her monthly subscription, I’m sure she would.

Also, texts are expensive and the Phillipines is a very poor country.

I would love to see Joshua win but I also like Jessica. Hope they are the Top 2. I like Philip, too, but he’s not as good as the JJ’s. (Honestly – I like almost all of the Top 10 – I might even go and see them in concert.)

Yesterday I was thinking some more about the topic of music reviews and whether or not anyone pays attention to them. I can see where reading random reviewers would not be very helpful in terms of deciding if you personally would like something they recommend. But if you regularly read a particular reviewers you would gain an understanding of what that reviewer liked and usually recommended. If you know a reviewer shares the same music sensibility then their recommendations would carry a lot more weight for you personally. I would think that back in the day (at least pre-internet) when most people took one newspaper and read it cover to cover they would be familiar with their papers reviewers. This was also probably more relevant when you couldn’t go on iTunes and listen to snippets. You had to go to a record store and buy something (which probably also made radio more relevant, now there are too many ways to hear music outside of radio)

All that said I don’t regularly read any reviewer. Perhaps I should because I frequently want new music but don’t know what to buy.

Thanks roarpen and justmefornow for posting the James vids.

Great quality, great pictures, great sound, great show, GREAT VOICE!!!!

I noticed in all his opening shows, that he seems to be getting a very good response by the crowd who at large is not likely to know him or the songs. Yes, James, you are on the right track, win them over one bye one. :)

  • fuzzywuzzy

lol No, I just brought over what was posted on the WW show site here:

It’s the season finale of “Celebrity Apprentice” and the two finalists are here.

    http://www.wendyshow.com/2012/05/11/mansome-documentary/

Clay is not named as one of the “finalists” who will be on the WW show.  Your source can’t be that site, since Clay is not named and the WW’s website doesn’t spoil who the 2 finalists are, whereas your post does.

As of last week’s Celebrity Apprentice show, there are 3 contestants left (Arsenio, Aubrey and Clay) and one more is to be fired at the start of tonight’s show, after which the 2 finalists will compete to be “hired” as the Celebrity Apprentice. The date of the appearance on WW’s show is 5/18, this Friday, after tonight’s show, so obviously the “finalists” who will be appearing on the show are the last two who are left in the game. The fact that you stated that Clay is on the WW show this Friday is a spoiler if you know that he will be on as one of the “finalists”.

So again, what is your source for the information that you posted here that Clay will be on WW show on 5/18?

Thanks for posting this Scotty does a really nice job I enjoyed it.

I am a major theatre freak and that’s exactly how I viewed theatre reviewers when I was in my 20’s and just starting to attend plays. There was one reviewer who rarely liked anything and it got so that local theatres would enarge her reviews to 4′ X 5′ posters and people would bond during intermission by standing around and talking about how wrong she was.

One thing I don’t understand is concert reviews. What’s the point of opening up the paper the morning AFTER a concert and hearing that you missed something great or didn’t miss anything at all. I guess most publications can’t afford to send a reviewer out of town to preview things any more.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

All that said I don’t regularly read any reviewer. Perhaps I should because I frequently want new music but don’t know what to buy.

Yeah, it wasn’t that long ago that more local newspapers had music reviewers who showed signs of knowing something about music, so one could learn to triangulate from their tastes to one’s own.

These days, if you’re looking for new-music guidance, I’d say to find a publication that gives a lot of coverage to the genres of music you like (alternative weeklies are often good, Stereogum does indie coverage, Boston Phoenix does a yearly round-up of indie bands nationwide, Paste is starting to do “10 bands you must hear” for each state — similar goodies must exist outside indie rock).

Or head over to Reverbnation, go to charts, narrow the list by genre or locality, and take a listen until you like what you hear.

I voted for Cook, but I dont remember ott manipulations like so many years.  Matter of fact, I thought they wanted Archie to wn and thought he had it in the bag.  I wish they would give them all a level playing field and let the best man win on his own.

People overseas are using Skype to vote for Jessica – they’ve even admitted it on some Idol forums – not fair to Joshua and Phillip.

  • Anonymous

There have been reports of peeps getting around the voting rules on AI for years, nothing new. It’s possible the accounting firm in charge is able to detect those votes & reject them.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think Haley is in any position where she can be too picky. She’s not a headlining act, so she needs to open for someone whether they are playing to 600 people or 6,000 people. You also have to remember that with summer coming up a lot of headliners  have already selected their opening acts, due to the fact that planning tours are not last minute things. There are a lot of things involved including things like scheduling venues,  promo for the tour, coordinating and maybe doing things with other artist that’s not a part of your own tour.

  • musicality

Just checking the headlines. I see two of the finalists are from the south and Jessica is from California. Jessica doesn’t stand a chance. The WGWG will win. I lay odds on it.

  • Anonymous

Thanks I’ll try to check some of those out

  • Anonymous

All I know about scheduling tours is from following Adam and he has said (both with fist album and now this one) they have to wait until they see how the album sells. They need to see how much interest and I would guess they need to see where the interest is to see where they want to tour, if they tour at all.  Adam’s advice is to “go buy the album” if you want to see a tour.

Actually….Scotty performed twice at the Opry. He sang The Dance and Water Tower Town for the 7pm show and then he sang with Brad on Celebrity and when they ended the song, the announcer said “Now that’s what you call an opry moment”!!. Scotty came on last for the 9:30 show and repeated The Dance and Water Tower Town. It was amazing!!!

Those Durbin vids are amazing. And I understand there are more to come today. God Bless the fan who filmed these vids – and WOW, did he pick the show or what? I think James must have been inspired by the colorful history of The Surf Ballroom. It was the last place Buddy Holly played the night of his plane crash.

Here is James and his two guitarists playing an acoustic Higher Than Heaven the next day on 3 hours of sleep after taking the red-eye to perform at the Wilmington Flower Market. I guess they squeezed this one in because the show benefits kids with special needs, obviously a cause close to his heart. They actually gave up a great show booked with Buckcherry to do this. I think that speaks volumes about James’ commitment to the special needs community, a cause that is also close to my heart. Enjoy!

Very well said Hugh29. I agree with everything. And his management did the right thing sending him out with Buckcherry. This is the right move. He gets the chance to learn from seasoned pros and the two bands have expressed a lot of mutual admiration and respect. This is exactly the kind of experience he needs, and his growth is showing. I am astounded that he never held back even though he was suffering from strep the first couple weeks of this tour.

  • Anonymous

Why? Can’t you vote on Skype overseas for Joshua and Phillip?

  • djafan

That was the first year I noticed because I became a fan of Archie and it was the first time I ever voted.  Oh I never believed they wanted Archie to win.  Simon was on a couple of talk shows the day before the finale it pumping up Cook it became apparent he was a Cookie.  So when he said Archie had a knockout I thought he’s trying to rally the Cookies to vote and it work. There was an incident where they pulled Archie’s song last minute and give it to Cook.  Somethings were obvious others were subtle.

I do agree with about the level playing field.  I think it would really bring the viewership up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucie-Laniel/909560091 Lucie Laniel

Aw! Forgot the Opry moment comment. For a young man like Scotty who is just starting his career, that had to be very special.

  • Anonymous

Simon was pushing for Cook to win, appearing on the Tonight Show and Ellen two days before the Final Vote.  Backstage rumors were spread to TMZ etc etc.

  • Anonymous

We have no idea if those votes count. And if they do, I have little sympathy for someone like Phillip, who probably has power texters voting 25,000 times a night.

  • Anonymous

Not sure why anyone actually cares about this now? Archie is doing absolutely fine in his life. Cook is set on a new post post Idol path.

They’re both great, genuinely nice guys; they’re both really talented. May they both find the path to success.

That said, if you asked 20 Archie fans and 20 Cook fans the same question, ‘Who was more pimped in season 7 and who did tptb want to win?’ I can guarentee that you’ll receive 20 completely opposite answers equally split between the two. Perception is all and it totally determine viewpoint and memory.

It’s a fanwar thing – and totally and utterly irrelevant this far down the track, surely?

  • Kitwana

Fadetowhite2 I think the original point is why there has not been more media coverage of Cook leaving RCA when the media seemed to work itself into a lather in reporting on Archie leaving Jive under very similar circumstances – with over a 1000 google news stories the day after the Hollywood Reporter article came out. My hypothesis, which started this discussion, is that this is the canary in the coal mine that shows that American Idol has lost its pop culture relevance.  The other possibility is that his management or publicist has utterly failed in getting other outlets to pick up on a very favorable interview by Shirley Halperin.  Unlike Archie, who never gave an interview about his departure from Jive, his management and publicist have a great article and video that they can get on AP or Reuters and very positively spin Cook’s departure from RCA.  That is what they are paid their 10-25% for. This has not happened.  So, it could be that his management and publicist have failed to earn their money or my canary in the coal mine hypothesis about American Idol is true.

  • Anonymous

If the media “doesn’t care about Cook anymore”, then why are all of my Google alerts about him leaving RCA?  They are from every blogger in sight plus USA Today, RS and many more of the larger news organizations.  Since Friday I have had on average 10 alerts each time I checked.

  • Anonymous

Kitwana – you’re asking the wrong fan.

I been perfectly happy to acknowledge that Cook has practically zero media interest for a while now. He received barely any press recognition when TLM was released. The only, few, articles I’ve seen about him for quite awhile now, have either been local concert promo or reviews, or local recognition of charity events.

I actually don’t think the media have ever been that interested or supportive of him, beyond the initial flood when he won, which goes with any Idol winner – and the flurry that followed the Billboard singles record thing.

Why? I don’t know. He’s not dramatic? He doesn’t play the game? He doesn’t give them anything? He’s not out and about in LA? He doesn’t go to events? He’s too PC in his interviews? He doesn’t have the right connections? He was never meant to win Idol?

I’m not really interested in playing along with the game of why Archie leaving his label got more press. I actually don’t really care.

Sure, I’d like Cook to get more press for his music. He doesn’t.

That aside – I think, as I said, both Archie and Cook are great, genuine, talented guys and wish both of them every success. Archie’s already started to cement a path for himself away from Jive. Cook’s tane the first steps away from RCA. Let’s hope both of them do well, out of the Idol shadow, where who was pimped on Idol and who wasn’t just doesn’t matter any more.

    It’s a pointless argument.

  • Kitwana

Fade2white2 Maybe there has been press coverage of Cook’s departure. I don’t have my google alerts set to David Cook but SallyAnne has gotten 10 alerts each time she has checked.

I think the lack of interest has less to do with Cook than the show itself.  Even media outlets that have traditionally had people assigned to cover the show are cutting back.  We all have our favorite bloggers from these media  outlets who are either covering Idol less for the outlet or not at all (Jambajim).  The comparison to media coverage of Archie’s departure from Jive was not an “argument”, as you say, but a powerful illustration of the dramatic decline in media interest in the show in just one short year. I would not be surprised if the next Idol who left his/her label does not even get a full Hollywood Reporter article but be relegated to a footnote in a story about a results show.

  • Anonymous

Kitawina – my first post wasn’t actually addressing your point about Idol fatigue: it was wondering why Archie vs Cook fanwar stuff was being revived now?

As for your point about cultural relevance. I don’t think it’s changed that much. The media has their favourites amongst ex-Idols, just as much as fans do. They still give plenty of press to either a) Those who sell lots of records (Kelly, Carrie); b) Those who they like (Adam, Kat); c) Those who are successful in another field (J Hudson, Fantasia) or those who have recently been on the show.

Cook just doesn’t fit into any of those fields, IMO. Or maybe not – as Sallyanne’s experience is different?

  • Tess

How does someone send 25,000 texts in two hours without AI realizing it and discarding the texts per their rules?  And how does some text 25,000 times anyway?  Nobody has explained to me how it works.

    # Do yourself a favor and check out my friend @michaelsarver1 new song out on iTunes. You won’t regret it.

so Kris tweets about Michael Sarver’s new single but never anything about Adam’s (even though Adam has tweeted multiple times about his music)?   that’s very enlightening….

  • Anonymous

Maybe Kris feels Adam will do well without the small amount of help a tweet from him could give, and he knows Michael Sarver needs all the help he can get?

  • Anonymous

I really think people are overthinking the amount of coverage that Archuleta’s departure received versus Cook’s.  (Yes, they are both getting Google alerts, but I do agree it seems like more attention was paid to the former.)

I think most people recognize that Halperin has a bias towards sensationalism unless it is in her interest to be more measured.

With Archuleta, it was a situation ripe for said sensationalism.  Management spilling the news on Twitter! Snarking about him!  Blindsiding the sweet young kid! “Dropped” by his label and management, right there in the headline!  That is dishy, and viralizes.

With Cook, Halperin got the exclusive sit-down interview.  So the terminology was the more measured “part ways,” and did not include any announcements about his management (obviously, since Fuller had just had him perform again, which could reasonably be construed as a vote of confidence).  He got to explain things in an “everything was amicable, I’m moving forward, here’s a new single that went down well with the studio audience” kind of way.  That’s just not as exciting as new copy.

It may well be partially about the waning pop culture influence of AI, but I also think it’s mostly about how the stories were framed.  In journalism, it usually is.

  • Anonymous

Okay…Whatever. I know it wouldn’t be wise for her and Kris to tour together, but it doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be enjoyable and entertaining for some.

Oh, and I’m sure that Kris and Haley have and will continue to perform to big crowds. :)

I think you’re missing the point. It is not even just a matter of tweeting. Adam, who was traveling all over the country, went out of his way multiple times to publicly pimp Kris’s single, including in interviews. Kris knew Adam had two singles out, but not a peep, but chooses to pimp Sarver’s single. How would you Kris fans feel if Kris publicly pimped Adam’s single multiple times and Adam didn’t reciprocate even once?

I think you’re missing the point. It is not even just a matter of tweeting. Adam, who was traveling all over the country, went out of his way multiple times to publicly pimp Kris’s single, including in interviews.

Honestly I think this is a bit silly. While some fans may call it pimping, it’s really not. Adam is a self admitted itunes junkie who is honestly legit excited about all sorts of new music and loves to talk about it, Kris’s new song included. That’s just him. I mean, just in the last few days he’s tweeted enthusiastically about the Scissor Sisters, and talked in an interview about loving new tracks from Nelly Furtado and Alex Clare. Music recs are one his most frequent types of tweets.

I think the last thing he would expect or even want is some kind of quid pro quo for it.

Yeah, I can see what you mean. I think Archuleta’s announcement was a bit exciting too as it also receive quite a bit of media attention. Not every day an Idol decides to go a 2-year hiatus.

  • Anonymous

I think this whole tit-for-tat expectation is ridiculous, but just for the record, Kris has mentioned Adam’s album drop date in a few interviews over the past couple of weeks.  I’m a fan of both men, so I notice and enjoy seeing them appreciate each other’s work, but I agree with those who think Kris and Adam are too busy to care about such a silly issue.

Amazing vids, if James and his band perform like this at Rock on The Range next weekend they are going to make a statement.  More people need to see these, his Dio cover was the best I’ve ever seen him do, but it could be because of the quality of Keith’s videos.  Liberate, Outcast, Crawling Home were just killer.

Surely you people know how David’s new single, the one he sang on Idol on Thursday, is currently in Top 1-6 on iTunes rock charts in many countries. Didn’t you also read his THR interview here in MJ’s Blog (on Friday or Saturday) – he explains many things in it.
