Idol Headlines for 05/12/11 – The Evening Edition

Jennifer Hudson tweets some bad news to her fans, “Hey guys! I just want to apologize to all who were looking forward to seeing me on tour this summer. Due to my upcoming projects the tour has to be rescheduled. I would never cancel a chance to meet my fans! I love all of u n cant wait to see u! (I wonder if the problem was poor ticket sales…)

The CMT music cable channel will be airing a disaster relief concert tonight at 8 pm to aid those affected by the recent Tornados. Crystal Bowersox will be on hand to answer phones and Carrie Underwood taped a special segment for the broadcast. The show airs at 9/8c pm on CMT. We’ll all be watching Idol, but I’m sure it will air again later. Proceeds of the telethon will go to the Red Cross.

Carrie Underwood Tapes Disaster Release Message

Carrie Underwood pre-records an appearance for the Music Builds: CMT Disaster Relief Concert on May 11, 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee.

‘American Idol’ behind the scenes: ‘Idol’ coaches talk the Top 4 — EXCLUSIVE

HALEY REINHART – “Earth Song” (Michael Jackson)
DEBRA BYRD: She wanted the choir, because it’s a big song and she thought three back up singers would not give her the feel that she would like — the subject matter is weighty, she knew that she needed extra voices. I have to laugh [about Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez’s criticisms]. I sing a song about what inspires [me], and you say that song isn’t right for [me]. That’s just a bit odd. But hey, that’s the whole thing about this TV show — it’s all subjective. The interpretation I take from that is the judges see her in a specific light and they didn’t see her in that light. That’s what I got out of it.

Steven Tyler: Here’s the Idol Vote Americans Got Wrong

While Tyler didn’t say that James Durbin, Haley Reinhart, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina don’t deserve to still be there, he did make it very clear who he wishes hadn’t been sent packing.

“I was really bummed that Naima [Adedapo] got booted off because there’s character there,” he said. “The best ones are the ones that us ordinary folks can find character in and hang our hat on that. Not just the great singing.”

Ousted ‘Idol’ Stefano — I Wanna Win Grammys!!!

“American Idol” reject Stefano Langone refuses to get sucked into the county fair circuit — dude’s got MUCH bigger plans for his future … and they involve a six-letter word that rhymes with glammy.

We ran into this season’s seventh place winner last night in L.A. — where he channeled Randy Jackson by saying, “Just because I’m not in the competition, don’t mean I’m not in it to win it”

Stefano added, “Definitely still waiting for those Grammys.”

Paige Miles Debuts New Single LUCKY @ TheatreZone’s ‘Beehive — the 60s Musical!’

Theatregoers attending TheatreZone’s final season production of ‘Beehive – the ‘60s Musical!’ are certainly feeling lucky. At the conclusion of the musical revue they are treated to a live performance of American Idol Season 9 finalist Paige Miles’s not-yet-released single LUCKY.

Beehive is currently playing at the G&L Theatre in Naples until May 15.

According to Mark Danni, founder of TheatreZone and Ms. Miles’s director and mentor, the former Community School of Naples graduate returned to her hometown stage to star in Beehive and wanted to share her first single from her future EP release StarDust.

“Paige wrote LUCKY and the Beehive band put together the orchestration with her fellow Beehive girl cast mates singing back-up,” explains Danni.

Blake Lewis: ‘J.Lo and Randy Were Unnecessarily Harsh With Haley Reinhart’

The night started out nice. People usually arrive at my place around 8:30–9PM and we get the party started. This time my DVR box really didn’t want us to watch ‘Idol.’ I was pissed! It kept glitching out every two seconds during some of the performances. Oh well! We set the computer on a stool and plugged it into my stereo system as a quick fix.

We only got to watch the performances and a couple of the Gaga critiques. Kind of interesting not hearing the judges;usually that’s a contestant’s dream when on stage, and I have to admit, it was nice not hearing them. On that note …

Jedward – Lipstick ( Ireland ) Eurovision 2011

The 2nd Eurovision semifinal is over, X Factor’s Jedward sang for Ireland and qualified for the final! Check out the awesomeness below:

  • koshka

(I wonder if the problem was poor ticket sales…)

Thanks for the opinion. I don’t follow Jhud & was sort of thinking in the same line.

  • blmetsfan

Sad for JHud fans, but I also would guess ticket sales. Was she co-headlining with someone? That probably would help.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

    OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

2nd Eurovision semifinal is over … and … Jedward sang for Ireland … and qualified for the final!!!!!!! They had the pimp spot, looked unforgettable, sang out of key and tune, jumped around the stage … and qualified!!! To be honest, they are way better than Dustin The Turkey (YouTube that travesty).

    EPIC PERFORMANCE:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGXQnNhE81M

Green Room, waiting for the voting to end, Jedward work it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxs-iU1uQH0

Louis Walsh, X Factor UK judge and Jedward’s manager is in Germany too. Here is a quick interview for esctoday.com: Jedward’s goal was to qualify for the final. http://youtu.be/QBCeZLAz4yk

Oh, the voting was 50% televoting and 50% national juries.

What’s even more unbelievable, my country, Slovenia, qualified, too!!!!!!!!! That’s totally crazy, we qualified only once before since 2004, in 2007. But tonight, our girl Maja Keuc somehow pulled it out!!! Our national pride saved for another year! Our commentator was so happy he started crying on air!

    Okay, some other Slovenian entries:

1995: Darja Svajger – Prisluhni mi – so classy, flawless performance, they were still singing with the live band in 1995: Amazing ballad, it’s now Slovenian classic. 7th place

    2001: Nusa Derenda – Energy – 7th place

2007: Alenka Gotar – Cvet z juga – 15th in the final: Talk to the hand!

  • iggy

I just love how Byrd says the producers are fair about who opens and closes the show on any given week. So, Nigel, tell me, why hasn’t Scotty ever had the pimp spot? Hmmm, Tell us about your fairness when you let James both open and close last nights show. Jerk!

  • koshka

MO: For Leiber & Stoller, he definitely had a harder time picking. He didn’t know which road to go. He didn’t even really know “Love Potion No. 9.” I had come up with some different arrangements for him before we went and had our session with Lady Gaga, and then Lady Gaga kind of changed it up.She was like, “You really gotta do that rock thing,” and she was making me bang the crap out of the piano.

I’m quite sure James isn’t the only one.. but this just confirms how hands off these guys are in creating the arrangements. Its why originality is missing in the show.

  • saga

Sweden, land of Max Martin (also qualified): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT-83Hv23Ew

  • iani

Please Mateja(Congratulations for Slovenia!) or someone else for a link of a live stream for Saturday. Thanks again.
    ETA: Thanks mak!

  • Mel1

When I rewatched the judges comments after Haley sang, I sure could see on Steven’s face how pissed he was at Randy. Not only that, but after Randy repeated himself twice, he was trying to talk over Steven to repeat himself again.

I’m glad Haley has Steven in her corner, even if he praises everyone.

  • Incipit

He didn’t even really know “Love Potion No. 9.” I had come up with some different arrangements for him before we went and had our session with Lady Gaga, and then Lady Gaga kind of changed it up.

Koshka, hands off isn’t even a strong enough phrase. Disinterested, or unable, perhaps?

I mean, Madonn’ – – so he didn’t know the song – look it up on youtube and see if it will actually work for you – if he didn’t know it, he didn’t pick it – anymore than Lauren picked “Trouble” – with the ‘Evil’ lyric. *snerk*

Other contestants in other seasons managed it…they were able to be hands-on for their own futures, whether they needed arrangement help or not. Help is different than someone creating several arrangements ‘for you’.

It’s telling how all this is related so matter-of-factly, so – this is the new paradigm – and the contestants don’t have much to do with it anymore.

I don’t think it’s possible to state how much I dislike this puppetry. And originality was just the first casualty.

Eh, Beyotching does no good. I already don’t watch. Or vote. Or go to concerts, or buy iTunes or CD’s – But I can regret what Idol used to offer – every so often, there used to be magic.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • mak

Please Mateja or someone else for a link of a live stream for Saturday. Thanks again.

    It’ll be here: http://www.eurovision.tv/esctv/future

What D. Byrd said about Haley’s “Earth Song” reinforced what I already thought: the song was sung exactly has Haley intended. She never fluffed even part of it; she was impassioned and the vocal reflected it.

The judges pushed a button when they criticized her song; it was akin to denying her ability to be spiritual or have deep feelings. Most insulting.

  • Chicagolaw

So, basically, James didn’t even pick his song. Or come up with the arrangement. Just how much is being done for these contestants this season? Sounds like they just show up in a lot of cases.

  • car3278sweet

Stefano added, “Definitely still waiting for those Grammys.”

Hahahahahah. Oh, my (wiping tears from my eyes). That was so nice to laugh so hard. Stefano – news. Even the great glam one is saying he’s going more dark and rough on his next record. You have missed the glam train. Well. Maybe not on cruise ships.

Sorry. Not so bitchy usually. But it’s been a bad day.

    Incipit says:

Oh, this, this, this. This season is the worst.

I know. Someone will come along and quote stats that say last year was the worst. But last year we had “Up to the Mountain” and “Jealous Guy” and Siobhan’s screams (which I am now loving compared to James’). We even had Key of Lee singing “Use Somebody” – which I still like. I connected with one contestant more than others last year, but I’ve connected every year to some contestant. I still am fond of Kelly, Bo, Daughtry, Kris.

This year? Um. Um. I guess Haley has been the closest. I wouldn’t say there’ve been any true ‘moments’, but she’s got balls and is willing to stand up to TPTB. But even she has been rolled over by the obvious contrived atmosphere and pimping. I honestly think the hostility she’s been getting from TPTB is somewhat related to the fact that she hasn’t completely fallen in line.

So, basically, James didn’t even pick his song. Or come up with the arrangement. Just how much is being done for these contestants this season? Sounds like they just show up in a lot of cases.

The contestants are now a cast on a TV reality show. They are not struggling artists with an idea of what kind of music they want. They are either kids too young to know what’s going on, or peeps willing to do what they are told and swallow the koolaid that they will be stars. Snort.

I have NO IDEA what kind of music these peeps really want to make. I have NO IDEA what is inside these contestants. I have NO IDEA what is in their hearts.

And yet we all (or most) applaud Scotty for how well “he’s playing the game.” Okay. Great. I don’t like this game anymore. Checked out.

  • n3mover

It’s so nice to see Josh Gracin’s name in the headlines. I’ve always liked him.

  • windmills

I suspect ticket sales for Jennifer Hudson’s postponement too. Originally she was supposed to coheadline with John Legend but then backed out of that because they expected her to be able to tour solo.

CMT’s Music Builds: Disaster Relief Concert will also be streaming live at CMT.com, Facebook, and other places.

koshka: I’m quite sure James isn’t the only one.. but this just confirms how hands off these guys are in creating the arrangements.

In the same article Michael Orland says this about Scotty and Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning):

When we were in the studio on Friday, working with Rodney [Jerkins], he and I were in the booth trying to figure out some stuff. That whole idea of him changing the melody on the second chorus, those all came from him. He really was so proud of himself for coming up with that.

So he had some input on at least one of his songs.

  • jeff2683

I feel bad for J. Hudson fans. It has to be hard to cancel a tour or even a date in the middle of a tour.

  • gangreen29

I know. Someone will come along and quote stats that say last year was the worst.

Stats tell more than individual opinions lol.

    Last year was the worst.

  • Robin40

I’m sorry for JHUD fans. To cancel a tour before it starts is not good. However, I must agree with those who suspect the cancellation (**coughs, postponement) has to do with low ticket sales. JHUD is a singer, not a performer.

  • HR

Adele is a singer. I don’t think that is the issue.

How large were these venues her team expected to fill?

Jennifer is a rarity. She received her recording contract after winning industry awards not immediately following Idol. She won’t have Idol fans boosting ticket sales this long after her time on Idol and her music has not had the crossover success to attract a larger audience. To fill venues for a tour she needs to build a live reputation the traditional way. Hit the road and tour constantly even if the venues and conditions are less glamorous.
