Thanks for the all replies to my question (about why everyone keeps watching even though they realize Idol is subject to heavy-handed manipulation). It just strikes me how willing the Idol audience is to suspend or at least set aside their disbelief, in that (I’m assuming) they are by and large aware of all the machinations, yet they keep faithfully viewing week after week, season after season.

I mean, technically speaking, we don’t know that they have ever counted a single vote on the show. The votes, as far as I know, have never once been independently audited. Sure they at least bring out some rep with a British accent from their own chosen firm at the finale to verify that the vote totals have been “certified”. But, we just take it on faith that what they are telling us is true that results night and every other one too.

The WNTS article was a little off when they put Chris Daughtry in the ‘pimped’ category. His original audition wasn’t aired in season 5. I believe it was shown for the first time just recently – I think on “Idol Tonight”.

Now in the beginning, the masses believed in the dreamÃƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ anyone can be a superstar, and so we Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…â€œdiscoveredÃƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Kelly Clarkson who was sold to us as a waitressÃƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ it was never mentioned that she had been actively pounding the streets of LA shopping a demo tape. It was far more romantic to believe that she just sang softly to herself and pleasantly entertained and impressed diner patrons in the process as she served them their rhubarb pie.

I watched season 1 and I knew that Kelly had gone to LA and tried to sell a demo, and gave up and went back to Texas. It wasn’t a secret. Yes she was a cocktail waitress, among other things. I don’t disagree about producer manipulation but I don’t think this was a good example of it. Kelly really was the rags-to-riches story and it wasn’t manufactured. In later seasons Idol got more savvy until this season which was the worst ever in terms of manipulation.

It was more likely due to all the press Cook got due to Adam’s death. Wasn’t his album also on sale over the past weekend on itunes and bestbuy?

Wow, that streaming chart is one Idol-heavy chart. LMAO

Cook had a really nice boost in sales this week, as did Daughtry following his Idol performance. Elliott sold 20K on his first week out. Kelly and Carrie also had positive updates. A good week for Idol sales.

Now I’m going to go listen to the interview to see what everyone is EWWWing about.
