Despite Lower Ratings, Cash Flow Rises for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

LOS ANGELES à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Can a television show with a shrinking audience actually increase its revenue?

In the case of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ the answer is yes, and the manner that the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s creators are going about it could change the way that producers and broadcast networks think about the longevity of reality television programs.

Despite losing viewers in each of the last three years, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ still the top-rated series on television, is generating ever-growing profits for its creators and, it appears, for Fox Broadcasting through brand extensions, marketing arrangements and licensing fees.

HITTING HOME

NEARLY 10 years after graduating, “Ameri can Idol” favorite Adam Lambert went back to the San Diego high school where, he told a TV reporter, he was the “weird kid.”

On a 12-hour, stretch-limousine tour of his home town that took him from TV and radio station interviews to fan meet-and-greets and finally to perform for the troops at San Diego’s Miramar Airbase, it was the visit back to his high school that was the emotional high point.

‘Idolatry’: A tribute to Allison Iraheta, and an in-depth discussion of ‘Dream On’

Fret not, Kris Allen fans and Adam Lambert obsessives! We’ll be discussing the performances of this season’s only acceptable remaining final-two combo in Monday’s episode of Idolatry. But for now, the two topics of screaming importance to the Idol world: Allison Iraheta’s unfortunate elimination after a world-class “Cry Baby”/”Slow Ride” combo, and Danny Gokey’s implausible success after he shoved “Dream On”‘s fist down the garbage disposal. In this two-part episode/therapy session, my cohost Kristen Baldwin and I vent our rage over the judges’ toolishness, try to make sense of Danny’s popularity, and finally (in part 2, which streams right after part 1) come to the realization that the “Save the Rocker” campaign was, in fact, a rip-roaring success. Idol Finalist Homecoming

Kris Allen comes home close to our neck of the woods, in Conway, AR.

It’s “kick awesome” in Conway, Arkansas, where Kris Allen’s fans are watching all the way from the rooftops and down past the stage where they can’t even see him. But they are there to cheer him on as he competes in the top three for American Idol.

Allen took the stage for his final homecoming performance singing Michael Jackson’s “Man In The Mirror”.

But Kris can really melt his fan’s hearts with his version of the Oscar winning song “Falling Slowly”.

“I love that song! It’s the best!” says one young fan,” says fan Jennifer Coon.

Beloit, Milwaukee churches rejoice in Gokey’s rise on ‘American Idol’

BELOIT à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Had Danny Gokey not auditioned for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and made a startling climb up fameà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ladder, the Milwaukee resident would have been at Faith Builders Church last Wednesday night, as always, for its mid-week service.

Instead, the husky Gokey stood at center stage before 25 million viewers nationwide and 300 Beloit-area parishioners, who watched one of the churchà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s three jumbo screens in its roomy sanctuary. During an only-on-à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ scene, Gokey à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ his arm, in support, wrapped around trembling teen contestant Allison Iraheta à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ listened to host Ryan Seacrest bring tension to the moment as easily as if he were driving over a grape.

‘Idol’ homecoming draws large crowd

Downtown was prepared, with painted windows proclaiming businesses’ support for Allen and Conway-themed streetlight banners reading “Conway, Home of Kris Allen.” At the University of Central Arkansas, about noon, a line stretched from the Reynolds Performance Hall to AETN made up of fans waiting to pick up their tickets to a performance by Allen.

Friday was literally Kris Allen Day in Conway. The Conway resident and UCA student advanced to the top three on “American Idol” this week, earning him a hometown visit. His first appearance in town was at UCA.

Linda LaPlante, her daughter Alexis LaPlante, 14, and friend Brianna Swindle, 14, were the first in line at Reynolds Performance Hall, and they were seated in folding chairs. They said they arrived at 5 a.m.

Live Review: David Archuleta @ Manchester Apollo

David Archuleta shares his name with a Japanese-based hip-hop vocalist and middleweight kickboxing champion. Amusingly, the two couldn’t be farther apart in terms of talent.

The dulcet tones of the 18 year old achieved runner up the in seventh season of American Idol, going on to debut at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, then selling over 690,000 copies of his album in the US alone.

Tonight though, Archuleta managed to shake the trend of being number two, and be support for McFly on their UK tour. Usually host to events heavier in nature, the Manchester Apollo was transformed into a venue full to the brim of screaming teenage girls, while their dads waited in the car park.

Fans get a full dose of pop at Wango Tango in Irvine

Wango Tango’s all about guilty pleasures à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ as in those trashy, brainless Top 40 songs you blast and belt in your car when you think no one’s looking.

Thanks to my lousy sense of direction, I somehow missed the 405 and ended up taking an extremely long detour which caused me to skip Madcon’s set completely (I heard they just sang “Beggin’”) and hear only the final strains of Kevin Rudolf’s “Let It Rock” as I sprinted from my car. The forgettable Soulja Boy Tellem took the stage as I finally made it to my seat and launched into “Crank That,”, the texting generation’s “Macarena” with an equally dumb dance and incredibly high annoyance factor.

Former ‘American Idol’ contestant Lakisha Jones’ advice to Allison Iraheta: Be yourself

Season six “American Idol” contestant Lakisha Jones has advice for Allison Iraheta, who was kicked off the show last week.

“I would tell her to continue being herself,” Jones told the Daily News. “She has a beautiful voice, she has a great talent, and it’s going to take her far. This is only the beginning. When you leave ‘Idol,’ it’s not the end, it’s the beginning.”

Like Iraheta, Jones also placed fourth in the singing competition. Now, she’s about to release her debut album, “So Glad I’m Me.”

That article on Idol’s revenue is full of goodies.

the average audience for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ peaked three years ago, at more than 30 million viewers an episode. This season, each episode is attracting about 25 million viewers an episode.

In other words, despite all the hype about Idol’s declining audience, we are talking the difference between around 30 mil and 25 mil. That’s still a ridiculous amount of people no matter how you slice it.

“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ could lose 12 percent of its audience every season and still be among the top 10 shows on television in 2016 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ even if every other show on television maintained all of its current audience.

Translation: Idol is going nowhere for the forseeable future.

this year that the company had experienced à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“eight straight years of growthà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in licensing and merchandising.

They make more and more money every year even with the decline. They will be looking for even more ways to make this a big fat corporate shilling machine. Soon the kids will have their outfits sponsored by Macy’s or something.

    Wow. Geesh.

IDK…just because you continue to make money doesn’t mean you have to be wasteful. Besides, they are probably spending it elsewhere, like the Ford commercials. Heh. It is definitely a strong brand and the agreement with iTunes is definitely a win-win. I think they could also branch out into sheet music (w/arrangements performed on the show and the studio) as well as backing and karaoke tracks.

Anywho, I would definitely buy a DVD of Adam’s trek through the AI machine as well as any subsequent DVD produced (with him as the focus).

Just watched Randy Jackson on the Today Show (thanks star)…

    1) Comparing the contestants – Really Randy? Danny can sing anything like Adam? Really? Seriously?

    2) Adam needs to show humility – IDK…I kind of like it when people have the ability to show confidence, swagger, and still be good competitors. Adam owns the stage when he is out there alone and shares it when there are others. What more do you want from him?

    3) Adam needs to figure out what kind of record he wants to make – here is one of my problems with AI. I get that it helps them market a contestant or performer. But I have always been of the opinion that an artist who makes a CD with similarly sounding music will lock him or herself into a market or genre and audience base. Whereas someone who is capable of being marketed across the spectrum is so much more interesting. Example: Norah Jones. With such a distinctive voice and style, her CD bores me to tears because every song sounds the same. I love the mixed CD I have of Adam’s performances because they have his signature, yet display different styles.

I get the sense that Adam knows what kind of record he wants to make. All of the above.

From GwendolynD…”Yes. I know. I mean, theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll benefit in the long run from cutting such an excessive cost.”

Every little bit helps drive greater profit or investment elsewhere.

Nice Randy interview. He may not be the most interesting or articulate of the judges but when it comes to the music industry, I think he displays the most insight of all the judges. He was a little too kind to Danny though but that seems to be an issue with all the judges this year.

Regarding AI cutting back, the production of the Ford spots is paid for by Ford, not AI. And Ford has slashed it Marketing budget. They have contractural obligations to be an AI sponsor, but they could be economizing on the production budget.

I can’t say anything about jet sharing, but I actually hope that they didn’t send two private jets to the mid-West — it would be easy to route to Little Rock and Milwaulkie on the same flight. Why waste money and energy.

But it seems hard to believe that either of them had the same day that the formerly chubby, formerly blond Lambert had at his old high school when Mayor Jerry Sanders took to a makeshift stage in front of the whole school to declare last Friday “Adam Lambert Day” in San Diego.

I love this, MJ! Thank you for yet another wonderful article on Adam. I love how his events are all small(er), yet so heart-warmingly personal and meaningful. Adam needs to show humility

Didn’t watch (can barely stand to hear Randy talk for 30-second stretches, so I’ll skip the interview), but that surprises me. Adam hasn’t ever gotten the “smug” or “arrogant” critique. He’s gotten OTT, etc., but overall, I’ve yet to see reviews on the net saying that he’s overconfident, which is remarkable, given how much praise he’s been given (in his own league, etc.). I think it’s a testament to the humble, likable persona he’s been able to convey post-performances, which is not easy. I don’t think Randy’s critique that Adam needs to show humility makes much sense. He needs to showcase his lower register, or one can argue there’s a variety of other things he could try if he wants to win over/connect with more viewers, but I don’t think his main problem is that he needs to show humility. If anything, Danny’s the one who needs to pay attention to his post-performance reactions, so he can stop coming off so much like a self-entitled D-bag.

  • maturin

Hmm re NYTimes. How many peeps have worked for a business that’s said something like this? Well, our core business is going down and we’re losing a chunk of our traditional customers. But we’re still the biggest, and from now on, we’ll make it all up on (not our core business: take your pick of “services,” “synergies,” “overseas growth”, “licensing our name to” . . . ). How well did that work out?

I don’t doubt they’re making hay off trading cards and branded ice cream while they can, but they’re in an industry where the next big television craze can arrive out of nowhere at any minute. Just like Idol did. As for that Time reporter who’s reporting uncritically that spiel about Idol running indefinitely: I wonder if he’ll buy my Weakest Link trading cards or Seinfeld icecream?

Congratulations on you article MJ. DA was also the nerdy choir guy, and it was hilarious how he was mobbed by the cheerleaders when he went back for his hometown visit. My how things change when the shallow people think you are somebody.

Do you think an interview talking of his lack of humility can hurt him in the long run and are they doing that on purpose. I don’t know why he would make such a statement.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Randy was also on The View this morning. In explaining Allison’s ouster last week he said “You need to show the personality. You need to sell it.” Give me a break! Allison did all of that and more.

From Brian Mansfield’s column last Wednesday, he said “Taylor Hicks saw a 148 percent increase in sales of The Distance following his appearance on American Idol last week.”

I’m really glad he got on the show this season. He needed the exposure and did a great job. So happy it helped him.

I would love to be at that Kelly unplugged show in Hongkong! But HK$5,000 and only 30 tickets (plus the swine flu scare)? Aww.

LOL I wouldn’t read so much into that particular comment by Randy. He said Adam is a superstar; you can’t get much more complimentary than that.

Thanks for the link to Jordin’s new song. I liked it. :)

Jordin’s new song is nice. Good for her!

Man, I will not be able to escape idols on my radio this summer. Heh.

    Storytime:

So im at a family gathering last night with a bunch of family and friends and the topic of Idol comes up. I try to play it cool (which lasted about 30 seconds) and then everybody was asking everyone else who they liked/thought would win. I of course said if there is any justice in the world, Adam would take the crown home. I was then out-voiced by a larger number of people who thought Danny should win. I immediately asked them why? Waiting for a response like, “because he can sing,” or “because we like the tone of his voice,” or “because we can hear him on the radio.” No. None of that. Instead, a teenage boy confidently blurted out, “Because it’s so sad his wife died.” To which everyone else agreed. And i forced out a smile and said, “And thats exactly how it’s supposed to work.”

    And I left.

I really donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get how Randy can make that lack of humility comment about Adam. Then again I never ever got the smug vibe from David Cook that apparently some others did. Both of these two are experienced and know what they can do musically. Then they go out and do it and entertain us. And neither seem to be jerks in real life. In fact they seem to be nice guys.
    I think Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d like this show if it werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t for the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“judges.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

They haven’t talked about it persay, LK09, but the harp, and the oh so very touching look toward heaven, and the ring being worn on only certain, touching songs all adds up to pimping his dead wife to me. Even the A for effort added to goulish widower pimpage to me. I mean, how can you kick a dog when it’s down? Of course, mileage disclaimers apply.
ETA to add a T because the and he will never be the same word.

  • GeminiDolly

Lack of humility? Ive heard whispers going around that Adam may be “too nice” for rock success.

  • Mad_World

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa!!! I haven’t watched the Randy video, but is he saying that Adam isn’t humble? Is that seriously what he said? He’s like the sweetest guy ever!! Just because he only says “thank you” while the judges are talking to him makes him arrogant? What is he supposed to say?

And Randy thinks Danny and Adam are just as good as each other? Hmmmmmmmmmm………….

  • JosieX

After thinking about what Randy could have possibly meant with his “humility” comment about Adam, I think I understand now why he keeps bringing up the “theatrical” thing on the show. He has an important point but he is just not expressing it well. Let me see if I can avoid the same problem! I love Adam, so bear with me a minute here.

I think that Randy understands that there are quite a few people who can’t/don’t make the leap of understanding that the persona displayed during certain kinds of performances don’t represent the full picture of who that person is. For example, “villains” on TV shows who have people yelling at them and shaking their fists at them when they go down the street. It’s funny, but dangerous for someone in Adam’s position. Think about it, in the last couple of weeks we’ve seen Adam as a sneering Rock God and swaggering Rat Packer with a Glam Twist. Some people will watch this and think “Huh, he thinks he’s all that” and don’t know that in every interaction with people that we’ve ever seen he is unfailingly a very sweet, funny and kind person.

I think Randy is suggesting that it would be good for Adam to make sure to do performances that show his sweet and vulnerable side. It’s good advice, things like his “Mad World” or “Tracks of My Tears” performances were extremely accessible to everyone. I think Adam is about as smart as they come so I am sure he will have thought this through very carefully.

Assuming that Adam makes it through this next round into the Final 2, I have no concerns about anyone thinking that he lacks humility after they watch his Hometown package. I watched as much of that footage as I could find and even though it will be edited down to just a few moments, I can’t imagine anyone watching it and concluding that Adam lacks humility.

  • colette

Ah LaKisha! I love Kiki just saying “Be yourself” to Allison. Good advice, ultimately and always.

  • noctem seizure

Lack of humility? Ive heard whispers going around that Adam may be à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“too niceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for rock success.

Either way, that particular question won’t matter, because if he’s signed to 19/Sony, Adam is not going to be a rock artist.

So David C. is arriving Tuesday morning, May 12, in Manila from the US along with David A. who is coming from the United Kingdom where he just had a solo concert, for their first-ever post-AI concert scheduled on Saturday, May 16, at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Concert Grounds, produced by Fearless Productions

I would agree with that, cuz I’m actually not a fan of the sneering stuff myself, but heh, I think that interpretation might be giving Randy wayyy too much credit. His track record for spewing nonsense does not earn him the benefit of the doubt.

I don’t get why the internet is the only place Danny’s getting any real critiques. I saw Idol Tonight after Scream On, and Chris R and Kim Caldwell and Justin G were all “that last note was tough, it’s not his genre, but he’s still always so good“. I was like… WHAT? And I was surprised when JPL, who usually tells it like it is, was on Idol Wrap after Rat Pack week, when Danny actually had a good performance after weeks of mediocrity, was like, yeah, Danny’s been consistently great, but it’s good he stepped it up. Huh? Consistently great!? Did mainstream media get a gag order so they can never say anything mean about Danny? I know Kim and Justin aren’t allowed to say their favorites and are never too critical, but surely their guests can… my mind, it’s boggled.

Did mainstream media get a gag order so they can never say anything mean about Danny?

Ha. I used to wonder that same thing when all media outlets started trashing Taylor all of a sudden.

Anyway, I suppose it’s more likely that these people see something in Danny that you don’t.

I don’t think Danny is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I do feel that the Internets has been VERY unfair to him. I think it’s almost like a gang mentality, where once someone perceived as “cool” has said something, others start agreeing. New people come in and see the hate and think it’s fun and join the bandwagon. Then it kind of takes on a life of its on.

Obviously everyone has their own opinions, but I do think for alot of people when you read negative stuff about someone over and over, you can’t help but look at them more critically.

As for me, I think Adam is the best, but I don’t think anyone will ever convince me that Kris Allen has a better voice than Danny Gokey. To me, the difference is glaringly obvious.

This just makes me laugh. The internet is largely anonymous, so the “need to fit in” seems to me to be less pressing. But who knows. Folks here (and elsewhere) seem to me to do a pretty good job of thinking for, and expressing themselves.

All I see is that, for the most part, the media reports on what they see, and what they see is that the judges seem to love Danny, never criticize him, and give him a pass even when he sux (objectively.) Reportedly, the live crowds adore him too. So, they follow suit.

“For me, for you, for me,” Slezak and Baldwin get it now. For many, it took the Scream heard around the world to emphasize the problem with Danny, as well as the talent behind the “screams” from Adam. But, yesterday’s Idolatry sums it up quite nicely. Finally, some credit to Adam for just how difficult it is to do what he does.

Not everyone likes the same thing, of course, and styles and appreciation for them will vary wildly, no doubt. Acknowledging technical superiority is warranted, imo, even if the media cannot bring themselves to point out the other’s inferiority as well.

  • star

Simon is supposed to be on Oprah today, fyi for anyone that wants to check it out.

Well, I do see your point on this somewhat, too, and maybe that’s part of it. But I just don’t know why if he genuinely sux that bad, the judges would always give him a pass. I know they want to pimp certain people, and might want to forgive a bad performance here or there. I wouldn’t think they would want someone that they totally believed sucked in the finale. They obviously like something about him.

But, for what it’s worth, I do think ALOT of people in online groups do try to fit in, eventhough they are anonymous. I’m not really necessarily talking about here, but I’ve witnessed it.

Leaving aside Danny totally and just talking in general about what goes on in groups online, I see alot of one up man ship, y’know everyone’s a comedian.

  • aek

Folks here (and elsewhere) seem to me to do a pretty good job of thinking for, and expressing themselves.

I think many people that would express an opposite opinion do not come here or don’t post, because of the negativity on their favorite. Therefore, there’s noone to really contradict or offer another viewpoint.

Btw, I’m not saying that this is wrong so much as just trying to offer an explanation for why things seem so different in real life as opposed to the Internet.

Danny obviously has fans. He has alot where I live….alot.

  • IndyMuse

Anecdotally, I had someone tell me many weeks ago that we should all vote for Danny Gokey because he lost his wife. I feel that, without realizing it, people are setting him up for a fall. Will they buy his CD at year-end, too, because he lost his wife? What about the years after that? He is left with an idea he’ll sell millions, and I doubt that will happen, whoever wins. I should note that though I like Kris Allen (and liked Allison, too), I don’t really have a horse in this race. Danny’s voice just has done nothing for me. I don’t feel I’d be somehow serving him or his dead wife’s memory by voting for him if I don’t like his voice or probable musical choices.

I think last year was the first year I really thought through the idea that I should vote where I would buy, not just for someone with a nice voice singing music I’ve no interest in. I’ve never felt inclined to vote based on back story, either.

FYI, Allison’s video was still up on the iTunes list this morning at #220. Someone at iTunes didn’t get the memo even yet.

I don’t think Danny’s a ghoulish widower, and I definitely don’t hate him, but I do feel he’s been overpraised, and that has nothing to do with the gang mentality. I like his voice but don’t think he uses it very well. I understand that could be just my opinion, but I just find it interesting that the blogs mostly agree with me that he hasn’t been brilliant, while most of mainstream media thinks he’s been consistently great. And sure, he’s squicked me out from the beginning with the way he’s come off on TV, but I try not to hold that against him. I realize it’s hard to come off natural on TV (I was squicked by Archie for the last part of Season 7, but now I love him), but I’m nonetheless surprised that the greater Idol audience hasn’t seemed to find anything wrong with any of Danny’s post-performance reactions. Again, I don’t expect everyone to feel the way I do, but I just find it interesting that hardly anyone in the mainstream media has picked up any unpleasant Gokeyness while the internet audience seems largely outraged by him… And when I say maintream media, I mean more of the TV coverage, and more of the news articles as opposed to blogs– and I’m excluding EW, cuz Slezak is Slezak, as always. Haha, love him.

  • aek

I like his voice but donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think he uses it very well.

I agree with this. I think he has a very good voice that could benefit from training and performing. I do like his voice though. And yes, I agree that he hasn’t really had any standout performances except CROS.

As far as unpleasantness, I don’t really see it. That’s one of those things that has really been blown out of proportion imo. It seems that the guy can’t even look in a direction, move, smile, breathe, without someone projecting evil upon him. It’s be laughable if it weren’t sad (again imo).

Yesterday, I read someone talking about Danny being so clueless because he kept dancing after Matt was saved when everyone else had stopped. I happened to have this episode on my dvr so I rewatched last night, thinking I was going to see him doing something absurdly crazy. Turns out he just turned and danced/jumped up and down for maybe 3-5 seconds (Lil was doing the same thing) and then went over to hug Lil-possibly to tell her congrats for not getting sent home (she had been bottom 3). Further, I read it was Danny’s idea to chant for Matt to be saved. I think he was just giddy.

It’s like I said earlier, I’m not criticizing anyone so much for what they see, it’s just that I don’t see it and I’m trying to understand.

I think there is truth in that, and that this is a common factor in popular culture. Hey, this is exactly how I explain Quentin Tarantino’s career! ;)
But seriously, I think that Danny is someone who has an excellent voice but who is more socially awkward than the average contestant. I think he is introverted and struggles to express his thoughts articulately when he is on the spot, so to speak. I don’t know that he will ever be a natural charmer in the way that Adam and Matt are, but I think this is something that will likely improve over time as he gets more comfortable in the spotlight.

In Danny’s case I don’t think so. I would feel the same way about him even if everyone else in the world thought he was great. It is NOT unfair to be honest about him and what we perceive as his lack of talent. It IS unfair of the judges to praise him when he gives a terrible performance. It IS unfair of the judges to criticize other singers but not him. It IS unfair when he’s given a free ride.

Just because a lot of people strongly dislike him doesn’t mean that we are jumping on a bandwagon. I think we are capable of thinking for ourselves. My question is, who is voting for him? That’s the great mystery. And how could anyone defend his scream last week? It was horrendous.

I agree with you that it’s not as if Danny’s been doing anything outrageously unpleasant every week like slapping his fellow contestants or clapping for himself (oh… wait).

Anyway, I’ll just agree that, yes, he hasn’t acted in any irredeemable (is that a word?) fashion, but the whole complaint about folks dissecting his every look, move, smile? Like it or not, that’s AI for ya. It’s as much a singing competition as a political primary. It’s always been the case that media coverage and performance reviews include commentary on a contestant’s likeability. Contestants get hammered by reviewers for talking back, frowning too much, looking too nervous, anything that could be interpreted as smugness. Especially the smug or D-bag label– it’s thrown at some unfortunate contestant(s) every year for the slightest infraction, and Matt G and Anoop, are among two who got that at times (even though I personally really liked both their personalities). I may not always agree with this phenomenon, especially since I think a lot of it’s misinterpretation, but this kind of thing always been around. My confusion with Danny is this: he has arguably displayed a number of these “tiny infractions”, and while others in the past have been ripped to shreds for less, the typical nitpickers (except EW) have largely given him a pass. I guess it’s because Simon hasn’t said anything along the lines of, “that wasn’t as good as you thought”, etc.

He seems to be trying to fit in and make jokes, but it isn’t also perceived the way he intends it to be.

FYI, Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s video was still up on the iTunes list this morning at #220. Someone at iTunes didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get the memo even yet.

Hopefully they never will… maybe some other Idol performances will make it through the filter this week.

I know Kim and Justin arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t allowed to say their favorites and are never too critical, but surely their guests canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ my mind, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s boggled.

Their guests cannot name a specific favorite. They can say “Well, so and so has great stage presence, and Suzie Q has one of the best falsettos of the group” but nothing more. Michael Johns was on Idol Tonight and they had to retape part of it because he accidently said Allison was his favorite.

  • lefty

Maybe with Danny it’s less of a bandwagon phenomenon and more of a personal sensitivity kind of issue. For those who got a toolish vibe off of Danny in the beginning, everything he does is perceived as fitting into the “tool” box (sorry, I couldn’t resist).

I say this from experience, as I have been guilty of doing this not only with AI contestants, but in my own personal life. And it happens every year, with DC and the smug label, DA and the robot label, JC and the stoner label, etc.

It makes me happy that I’m not on TV.

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

Congrats MJ — great article. I got all smug, heh, I knew her back when ! (i feel a tee shirt coming on).

Randy needs to get his foot out of mouth. Adam has been overly gracious and constantly thankful for all the over-the-top praise he receives every week.

He’s either a blithering idjit or Alzheimer’s has kicked in and he has Adam mixed up with Danny.

  • luckeee55

Adam has been overly gracious and constantly thankful for all the over-the-top praise he receives every week.

Sounds like a certain teenage contestant from season 7. Only difference then was the teenager was bashed for acting that way. I am happy that people are seeing the value in humility this year.

  • AInoob

Not sure if this was posted somewhere already but several hours ago Paula posted this Access Hollywood link on her Twitter. Apparently she surprised Scott MacIntyre with a guide dog.

Really? That’s interesting. I listened to Andrew Cook’s radio interview with Matt G, and Andrew said something really interesting: he was in the audience country night, and wanted to go up to Matt’s dad and praise Matt after his performance, but didn’t want to do anything that would “make his brother look bad” if he talked to one contestant’s family and not the others. I was like, really? TPTB’s are that concerned with little things like expressing preference? This is all very strange to me.

  • Trina

This article about the David/David concert said more than 40,000 are expected to be there :shock_tb:

  • Keel

What I recall is people rolling their eyes because they thought Archie was faking being surprised that he was getting praise. They all thought the “aw shucks, who me?” persona was fake as opposed to being genuinely who he was. (If I recall, I guess people got pretty sensitive to this because of Melinda from S6 (which I did not watch).) In other words, Archie wasn’t so much bashed for being too humble but rather because he acted shocked when he did get praised (especially since he was getting praised fairly regularly). (For the record, I never thought this of Archie and was surprised when Slezak (as an example) snarked on Archie about this precise issue last year.)

That is strange, but I thought several former idols had expressed a favorite.

    from the new york post…..

    THE BEAT IS ON
BEYONCÃ ©, BRUCE AND THE BLACK EYED PEAS LEAD SUMMER CONCERT SCENE

In summer, a music fan’s fancies turn to stadiums and sheds, the better to hear the dulcet tones of favorite bands in the great outdoors. It’s the season when every musical act worth its salt hits the road, and these are the 20 best coming to New York City.

    8. David Archuleta June 24

    Nassau Coliseum ($36-$46)

The 2008 “American Idol” runner-up has had a ripping year since his goose was Cook-ed. He turned out a hit debut and his new single “Touch My Hand” is doing well. He even made a guest turn on “Hannah Montana.”

At first that article kind of freaked me out because I thought wow, Archie was more popular than Green Day! Then I realized that the numbers on the left were not rankings, but just the order that they appear date wise. :laugh_tb:

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but my daughter was at Anaheim House of Blues, last night. The group “Live” was performing. Chris Daughtry showed up in the middle of one of their songs, sang for about 3 minutes then left the stage. She said he was very good and it was really cool.

    OK! Interview: Allison Iraheta

What advice did your mom give you before you started?

It wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really, she just told me to do your best. She was just proud of me for trying out and do your best and stay true to yourself.

Tell me a little about your hair.

It was weird. Red is my favorite color. It was two years ago when they decided to do a makeover thing to me. I had long, brown highlighted hair. They just cut it short and dyed it red. Then my mom started getting used to it and slowly I started adding other colors.

My take is that Mr. Randy has a right to his opinion just like we all do. It’s just that he’s paid for his, of course! LOL! The fact that his opinion doesn’t necessarily always align with our own is of no practical consequence and certainly doesn’t signify that he’s senile, insane or otherwise imperceptive. Randy’s a harmless teddy bear, imo. :=) Besides, if you listen closely to what he has said, I think he’s been fair and balanced. Heck, one could make the case that Simon is the one who’s been almost completely one-sided in the press, but since we agree with him, we tend to ignore it.

Also, if you’ve watched the show for years as many here have, you know that Randy tends to favor soul, hip-hop, and R&B. That’s his wheelhouse. However, since he is a producer and has been a musician (in a rock band, no less!), I think he’s also more than qualified to pass judgment on or to comment upon artists of all genres. I know he’s more qualified than I am.

As for Danny, I’m guessing that he’s just socially awkard. Actually, he’s not even close to being suave; he’s borderline socially handicapped. I think it’s because he was raised in and insulated by a large family with its own unique dynamics (as large families often display). Additionally, some people are just kinda born nerdy, inept…different. And didn’t Adam say something about embracing our differences? LOLZ!! :thumbup_tb:

^^^”I hope they squash all the David vs. David marketing it seemed like they were gearing up for. In light of Adam Cookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s passing, it would be in extremely pooor taste.

    Translation from Achuleta Philippines

DA arrived past 3pm this afternoon. Soon as he went out of the arrival area of NAIA T1, he was mobbed by the media, even by the airport personnel and immigration people. People just kept taking pictures of/with the singer Afterwhich, he proceeded to the VIP lounge to take care of the necessary documents.

Cook arrived earlier this afternoon. Both are here for their back to back concert.

Archuleta is also set to guest on SIS, this Thursday

No, that simply isn’t true. He criticised other people, finding faults where there is none, insisting that he was just “keeping it real”, but when it comes to Danny truly appalling performance, he said that the performance was OK but then he would insist on adding that it’s an A for a valiant effort?. Ignoring something so stupendously bad and managing to say something nice about it must take quite a bit of effort.

Randy has lost all credibility with me, as for “keeping it real”, his opinion is as fake as they come.

  • EmmaJK

I hope they squash all the David vs. David…

Well, maybe the media will, but fans, unfortunately, have already started. The two David’s welcoming crowds at the airport have already been compared to each other, as well as the demeanor of each at the airport. Really, really hope this doesn’t keep up the entire time they are there. This constant comparing is unnecessary.
