Carrie Underwood learns from imperfect moments – NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — “American Idol” did more than launch Carrie Underwood’s career — it helped shape the picture-perfect image she has today. In interviews and public appearances, she never has a hair out of place and always says the right things. She only recently decided it was safe to join Twitter, and if there’s ever a controversial tweet from her account, assume it got hacked. Her carefully crafted persona doesn’t come from “American Idol” media training, but rather from what she feels were cringe-worthy moments during her winning run on the show in 2005 that stereotyped her as a naive “country girl.” – Read more at Associated Press

Queen gears up for tribute tour ‘Extravaganza’ – Any plans to perform with Lambert beyond that are unclear for Queen, who have toured on a handful of occasions over the past decade with Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers. “I don’t know whether that’s going to be ongoing,” Taylor said. “Brian and I are not the young men we once were. These are slightly experimental — we’ve got to see how they go, see how we get on, if it really works. Who knows what might happen. It really is slightly experimental right now. We didn’t really want to commit ourselves to too many things.” – Read more at CNN

Nigel Lythgoe Previews His New E! Show, Opening Act! Plus, Who Does He Think Will Win American Idol? – So how does Opening Act work? “What we’re doing is looking down through the Web, the artists that have placed themselves on the Web…and we’re going to say, ‘Listen, you’re very good on the Web in your bedroom, in your front room, but in five days’ time, you’re actually opening for Nicki Minaj.’” Talk about pressure! “These kids that have never done anything in their lives, never actually performed in front of anybody, have got five days to get themselves ready,” Lythgoe explains of the new series. “We’ve got an artist development team that will help them, but it’s going to be very exciting.” – See the video at EOnline

‘The Voice’s’ Tony Lucca on Christina Aguilera’s Comments: ‘I’m Just Confused More Than Anything’ – After the show, Lucca spoke to THR about Aguilera’s continued comments, and their relationship when they were on The Mickey Mouse Club many years ago. “We weren’t really friends on the show,” he told THR. “She was 12 and I was 17. So at that age, there were the older kids and the younger kids.” “We had a wonderful working relationship,” he added. “There were music numbers that we did where I would sing background for her, and there were dance numbers and all that kind of stuff.” “I don’t disagree with her suggestion that Adam consider us both. I think the world of Katrina. She’s phenomenal,” he said. “But of the four coaches, especially at this point in the game, it doesn’t seem like anyone is trying to manipulate or steer anyone else’s tough decisions, so for her to do that it seemed a little out of place.” – Read more at The Hollywood Reporter

Lambert’s mind is quicksilver – the charm and charisma come right through the screen.  His potential in so many different areas is a marvel to see.

  • Anonymous

Much as I love Queen, Adam needs to push his own music.  Happy these concerts are “experimental.”   Brian’s and Roger’s ages have entered into my mind as problematic during a very lengthy performance.  Only doing it will tell.

Marc Matel is phenomenal! He’s the one who should be playing with ^Queen.

For me it’s Freddie Mercury >> Marc Matel>>George Michael>>Tony Vincent >> Paul Rodgers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Adam Lambert

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

Marc Martel  is an impersonator. It’s why he’s doing the tribute and Queen chose Adam. They made it clear they wouldn’t looking for someone to front them that was a copycat of Freddie but someone that brought their own originality. Sorry to disappoint you. If Martel’s performance on Idol was any indication I can understand why Queen didn’t choose him for the real deal.

Leah LaBelle – pleasant, but nothing distinctive.

Tim sounds pretty good – song is nice – actually, rather hear him than Leah.

“Even if I did have a prediction, I wouldn’t be saying anything, but I really don’t and I’ll tell you why,” Nigel said. “There’s never been somebody who has won two weeks on the trot,” he explains. “One of them will win this week, someone else will win the following week, so nobody there is actually guaranteed a place in the finale, which is exciting.”

I guess Nigel has confirmed what a lot of us has been thinking. Makes me wonder about Phillip, the only one not to have seen the bottom 3…

  • Nele621

Even tho I’m getting to like Lambert more, I’m still not that much of a fan. So my opinion isn’t particularly biased. I’m just going strictly by who I think is talented. This is how I would rank them: Freddie, Adam, George, Paul. Then Tony and Marc at the end. Yeah, Roger and Brian has seen and heard Marc enough, and if they were interested, they would have/could have asked him to front their band for a few concerts.

  • Nele621

That’s interesting. The votes must be close then.

  • Anonymous

I do not believe Marc Martel could last a single Queen concert. His voice is to weak, he would have to push to hard and his voice would give out Even tho he sounds close to freddie, he does not have the power or stage presence to pull it off, IMHO. Thus Queen extravaganza has 4 singers, not just Marc.

Thanks MJ for Elise Testone clips this am/pm.  Really helps dispel the pain of her departure.

I see on “The Boot” that The Zach Brown Band is going to present a ZBB Southern Ground Music & Food Fesival concert in Charleston, SC, on Oct. 20-21.  Sponsors are Landshark Lager and Jack Daniel’s.  The article states that the event is to have an eclectic line-up of artists to be announced soon.

Since Charleston, SC is Elise’s home, she’s a Charleston music scene fixture, now nationally known, coupled with the fact that the Idol Tour will be over by October, heaven and earth must be moved to get Elise on the bill as a performer.  Make it so.

Wonder about Phillip, too – what cross-section of the population is interested.  He gets that WGWG accusation – cute, etc.  But, after his performance of “The Stone” – certainly not “pretty” music – it’s raw and visceral – think his fans must be rather diverse.  Can see him attracting guys, too (well, as many as who watch AI, that is).

Adam can do both. As frontman of Queen it gives him huge exposure and cred worldwide. Exposure that money and radio play cannot buy. :)

Marc Matel is an imintator. I watched him on AI and his voice is weak and so is his personality. He was boring. I was not captivated at all. I was bored in less than one song. Adam’s EMA performance was riveting and his vocals had Queen’s phone ringing off the hook according to Brian May so there is a big difference. Marc’s voice is suited to mimic Freddie on a couple songs but outside those couple songs his voice is weak.

  • Anonymous

    Tony Vincent??? No.

GM and Adam are both excellent. Haven’t heard Rodgers but GM and AL are better over all than Matel.

  • Anonymous

Absolutely agree.  It’s not Adam that I’m concerned about.

I actually think it’s more telling of people like Josh and Jessica, who have consistently gotten tougue bathing from the judges, but still don’t seem to be dominated the voting week after week.

Whereas Phillip has stayed out of the bottom even when it wasn’t his week.

Re who should sing with Queen, I would think Roger and Brian know best who should sing with them, and they chose Adam Lambert.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but as we can see in the end, Adam was chosen by Queen, the others, not.

Adam just has something that made Brian and Roger want him.
Obviously it was a combination of his voice and his stage presence, but maybe there was another factor, one more elusive that we can’t pin down.

Whatever, I am thrilled that Adam was chosen and can’t wait to see/hear the concerts!

  • Kylee

So it looks like there hasn’t been a clear winner in the votes every week…for all we know, Phillip may have been on the verge of a B3 appearance a few times. This hopefully cements that fact that Phillip isn’t running away with this…

  • Anonymous

Queen Extravaganza is a ‘TRIBUTE” act , is not that Queen is reviving the original band a la Journey ( the original members have not the same energy from the past to do extended tours in big venues),  but more introducing and promoting their music to the new generations and making a tribute to FM , is because that they have 4 lead singers , a woman included and so many talented musicians on stage to do this show called ‘Queen Extravaganza’ ;) …. personally i think is an smart move from them to still promoting their music catalog. :D ….btw 40 songs gonna be performed on the show, so not way one single single gonna do it …… just saying.
Second,  Marc Voice is nothing weak lol , his voice is Amazing!!!!! , with a big range ,maybe not the taste of everybody , but surely attractive to many people who already bought tickets to see the show and enjoy Queen Music . He is doing this project because he and his band are taking a break , so the project is temporal for him too , Adam is a great performer and has a great voice , but like in Marc case his voice is  not the  everybody taste …. Anyway good luck to both of them Adam with the international concerts and Marc with the USA/Canada tour . :)

  • too-cool-for-school

Phillip’s fanbase is considerable but the assumption that a P2 victory is a foregone conclusion is just paranoia/WGWG pessimism, IMO. Anything can happen! :)

  • TheOther

I guess Nigel has confirmed what a lot of us has been thinking. Makes me wonder about Phillip, the only one not to have seen the bottom 3…

Phillip and Colton were probably splitting votes.  Colton has said they both share the same fan bases.  Iovine had hinted that Colton was ahead of Phillip; Phillip was ahead of Colton, etc.

There actually have not been 2 weeks in row without a Phillip/Colton match up.  Last week was the first – and Phillip stayed out of the bottom.

  • Trina

I never bought the idea that P2 was running away with the votes simply because he never hit the bottom. James last year also never hit the bottom, escaped the bottom even during a couple of bad weeks, then all of a sudden got booted in 4th place. I always suspected he was hovering near the bottom the whole time. I remember even during the week where he got some good buzz with his “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” performance, that he was near the bottom on DI so I kinda thought even then he wasnt pulling in a lot of votes. This season, Nigel’s quote just cements my belief that no one is running away with this.

I love Queen but would not go if Adam Lambert performed with them — just not the real deal.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

I love Adam but George Michael is awesome and even Adam would bow to him. Back in the day he would have did the job as a Queen frontman just fine but Queen today want a fresh new young blood who fits with their theatrical style. Adam also has the vocals and range to sing their songs. Queen had to do a lot of adjusting for Paul Rodgers to be able to sing their catalogs. He’s more of an R&B  singer with no showmanship at all. He is and was never a good fit and besides Roger Taylor can’t stand him. Tony Vincent? lol.

  • Anonymous

I really enjoyed Constantine’s interview with Elise. She is frank and personable. I learned a little bit more about her musical studies.

Surprisingly, I am really enjoying these weekly videos from Constantine.

  • Anonymous

Just because you’re never in the B3 doesn’t man you are running away with the vote. Or even winning the vote. It just means you aren’t in the B3 of how ever many contestants are left. You could be on top or you could be 4th from last.

In S8, Danny was never in the B3. Not only didn’t he win, he didn’t even make the finale. So I wouldn’t be handing PP the crown quite yet. At least on twitter, he is a very polarizing contestant — a lot of people love him, but a lot of people hate him. Polarizing contestants don’t tend to win these type of shows. Of course, there’s always a first time

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

It’s kind of more fun knowing that nobody is running away with the voting and anybody can actually win.   That is if Nigel is on the up and up.  At the very least it makes for better television.  I actually wanted Scotty to win last season, but it wasn’t that fun to watch in the sense that I expected he was running away with the votes from the beginning of the season, so there wasn’t much suspense.

I also don’t believe P2 is untouchable.  Heck, people thought Colton was a lock for the finale and he’s long gone.

  • Anonymous

You sound like a disgrunted fan of the other singers who are not going to do the concerts with Queen!  If the real deal is Freddy, of course Adam is not him.  FM was fantastic but also passed away many years ago.  I trust the judgement of Brian and Roger, and they know much better than I do.  That said, I think that Adam is an amazing singer and performer!  Good choice by those who know better…

  • koshka

I’ve only seen March perform ONE Queen song on YT and I looked. If you know of some performances where he has to perform Queen’s early rock or uptempo tunes, I’d love to see them. Until I see more, Marc is one mustache short of being an impersonator… which upon further reflection is perhaps what they are going.

  • Anonymous

Yes, can sympathize – it’s not the “real deal.”   But since May and Taylor wish to go on playing their wonderful music and hearing it sung, I believe Lambert is a superb choice.  He has the voice, charisma, and ability to move on stage that are requirements for this sometimes operatic style of music.  So -if not the “real deal,”  perhaps a “new deal”?

I’m very much looking forward to these performances.

  • Anonymous

Hmm, I thought Jessica got subdued praises from the judges for weeks now and so was P2. And both also received some criticisms. The king of tongue bathing goes to Joshua and his 12 standing “O”s.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

I would be shocked if P2 gets booted off and I will be the first to pop the champagne. If he wins I doubt he will be burning the charts or sell any albums. You might as well have a girl win, heck I’ll have Joshua who isn’t a WGWG have a chance. My ideal would be Jessica for the win and Joshua runnerup but the reverse would be OK with me. Skylar will go on to have a nice career but if she wins AI will be mocked for turning into County Idol 2yrs in a row.

  • Nele621

If Phillip and Colton were splitting votes, wouldn’t that assure Phillip of winning? It seemed those two were the most popular.

I have no idea if P2 is running away with anything, nor do I really care. This could all be more manipulation and maufactured drama on Nigel’s part. Who knows?

But your suspicions about James got me curious so I checked DI from last season.
    Top 9 James came in 2nd place. Top 8-4th, Top7-3rd, Top6-2nd, Top5-2nd, Top4-3rd.
I guess we will never know, but my guess has always been that the stupid judge’s Haley bashing did James in. Also, it didn’t help that it was the one and only time the performance orders didn’t match the phone#s. The next week they went back and matched the numbers again to the order. No explanation was ever given why they changed it for that one week.
    Who knows?

My guess is they can and do manipulate everything they can to promote who they want and maintain ratings, and since they have never revealed actual numbers, no one can call them on it.

  • too-cool-for-school

    Hilarious. Thanks for posting, Pam!

  • http://twitter.com/raya4 raya

Besides the fact I still don’t really understand the assumption that Colton and Phil were splitting votes, I actually have never really thought that most that hardcore voters continue to vote after their fave gets the boot.  Especially in the week right after said person was booted.

May edition of Mid-Atlantic Rock Reviews about the trouble rock Idols have getting played on radio.

Mid-Atlantic Rock Reviews-May Edition Written by K-Rock Thursday, 26 April 2012 15:57 The Idol Irony

One of the reasons I am not a huge American Idol fan is that the rockers on the show don’t seem to stand a chance of getting all the way through. However a number of talented rockers have made it through, but seem to have trouble breaking through to stardom status in the rock and roll world. Somehow, it almost seems like their success on Idol sends a message to rock radio stations not to play them. Clearly there are three artists who have fallen victim more than any others to the Idol Irony factor.Coming in at #3 in my rankings is David Cook. David’s last release in March was an acoustic EP that was a decent effort that showed off his singing abilities in general more than it highlighted his ability to play decent rock music. We have had the chance to see David perform live and he can definitely rock a crowd. He may not be the ideal show for those in the mood for a little head banging, but for a nice evening of rock and roll, he’s pretty solid. David will be in the area in Washington D.C. on May 5 and 6 if I have sparked your curiosity.Best former Idol Rocker #2 is James Durbin, the phenomenal rock singer from last years’ contest. James quietly released his debut in November 2011. Just as with the other two singers on this list, the guy seems to be getting the cold shoulder from the rock radio world. James’ debut release “Memories of a Beautiful Disaster” is an unbelievably strong debut effort. This is not a pop star trying to create a rock image after Idol. This album is the real deal for rock music fans. James has a big opportunity to make a splash in the realm of live rock and roll as he plays at Rock on the Range which is one of the nation’s premier rock festivals. We haven’t seen James live yet, but he will be at Ram’s Head Live in Baltimore on May 17 with Steel Panther.Chris Daughtry is by far the best thing that American Idol has spawned. Suffering from the same lack of airplay that James Durbin is suffering from, Chris Daughtry may be one of the most underrated rock acts out there period. We’ve caught Chris live numerous times and the best advertisement I can give him is to tell you that we continue to see him at every opportunity. Daughtry’s 2011 release “Break the Spell” was a last minute nominee for our Mid-Atlantic Rock Reviews Album of the Year category in our annual Golden Horns Awards. The late release date hurt Chris in the voting, but I would suggest that it was among the best releases of 2011 without hesitation. So did Idol make or break these guys? The Idol Irony is that the very show that catapulted their careers may be the cloud that hangs over them and brands them as not “real rockers” to the rock and roll community in some sense. We have to wonder if the departure of Colton Dixon from the show this year will add him to the list of Ironic Idols. So let this be a lesson to you aspiring rockers. Beware of the Idol…it may make you and it may break you.

Besides the fact I still don’t really understand the assumption that Colton and Phil were splitting votes, I actually have never really thought that most that hardcore voters continue to vote after their fave gets the boot.  Especially in the week right after said person was booted.

Nigel Lythgoe has said that they do continue to vote.  I also think that the judges behavior can be interpreted as favoring one contestant over another, when the two contestants would likely share votes.  There’s a reason why Jimmy said that Colton/Phillip and Jessica/Hollie were splitting votes, and I agree with Slezak about the judges seeming to pick Phillip over Colton two weeks ago.  I think they did the same thing with Erika and Elise the week that Elise left.

  • justmefornow

This just confirms everything we have always known to be true about the “Idol Rock Curse”. Someone, I hope breaks it, and I hope it will be James.

Nice comments about James and MOABD. I hope the reviewer gets to see him on May 17. You have to see him live to fully appreciate how good he is.

“Mid-Atlantic Rock Reviews” reviews rock albums and all rock concerts up and down the whole east coast.  I’m sure they will catch James live at some point.  When they reviewed his album (back when it came out), they gave it a very good review.  I have to say too, that these people are not always nice.  If they do not like someone, they tell it like it is – but they clearly like all 3 – David Cook, James Durbin and Daughtry, which is really awesome.

  • Anonymous

Oh…I forgot to add…that Mid-Atlantic Rock Review column is in the May edition of Shockwave magazine.

  • dishwalla

Looking at the AI voting audience, when Danny was voted off, voters still had a choice in Kris.  When James was voted off, voters still had a choice in Scotty.

When Colton was voted off, their choice was going to be Phillip.  There was no one else left.

When Colton was voted off there was a huge backlash from his fans – targeted at Elise, Hollie, and Jessica.

That said, no one is is a runaway, lock.  I also take Nigel’s comments for what it is – him trying to stir drama for ratings.

Just finished watching Jim C’s recap.  That was pure genius.  His best of the season!  haha!

And I agree, awesome. I like all three as well.

Now, if only he gets a second single released to rock radio…..

When James was voted off, voters still had a choice in Scotty.

I doubt a lot of James votes went to Scotty. Just because they are both male doesn’t mean they share the same fanbase.

When James was eliminated, he asked all his fans to vote for Scotty.  I do know some people who did, just because James asked them to though.

Queen is arguably one of the top 5 rock bands in popular music history.  They chose Adam Lambert to front their band, and that is pretty amazing.  Hard to spin it into a negative.  Adam will kill it, people will want more, and Adam will gain worldwide respect from most music fans, and the few butthurt, will have to get over it, cause haters gonna hate!  Those who claim that Adam is not rock enough or Adam is to dance music oriented, just need to come to the realization that the man is so talented, that he can do it ALL with the best of them! Rock on Adam Lambert!

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

Yeah, Daughtry has really been hamstrung. Right.

By the way, can you supply a link to that article. There are people who may be interested in reading it.

  • justmefornow

I do remember that too. But a lot of fans not only didn’t vote, but stopped watching til the finale. The ratings for result night of top three were actually less than top four. (I think Desdemona actually posted them here a few days ago, can’t remember which thread, though).

I didn’t vote for Scotty afterwards, and I didn’t watch again until the finale. But I must add, Scotty was doing just fine without any help from James fans. He was pretty much running away from everyone at that point.

  • Anonymous

The predictable Scotty/Lauren finale was definitely that. Finales without any suspense just aren’t fun. Not to mention boring. I’ll forever be annoyed that Haley didn’t make the finale. I don’t care what anyone says. She deserved it. Yeah I know I know she’s most likely better off for not being in the finale, but still…

I’m happy that Scotty won though. Because he truly deserved it. Lauren’s a very talented girl and an awesome person in general, but IMO she wouldn’t have deserved to win. Much less be the first girl to win since Jordin Sparks won.

I don’t believe Phillip is running away with this either. Praying he’s not anyway…If a girl wins this year I’ll be happy, but I won’t be jumping up and down over it. Even if by some miracle Hollie manages to make the finale. I’m just not madly in love with any of these peeps voices. Hollie and Heejun both have lovely tones to their voices and have great personalities as well, but I’m still not sure if I’d by any of their original music. I only have a handful of their Idol performances so it’s up in the air at the moment.

I’m sorry I didn’t link it here, but for some reason I could not figure out how.  Maybe you would know how.

This is the link to Shockwave Magazine, and if you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page where it says latest news, you will see Mid-Atlantic Rock Reviews May Edition.

If it wasn’t for Idol, they’d still be at their former jobs.

Thank you thirdtime for the Shockwave Magazine link http://goo.gl/Lt4BM; I’m surprised  somebody has spent some time to write about AI-rockers and their struggles to have their music played on rock radio-stations. “Somehow, it almost seems like their success on Idol sends a message to
rock radio stations not to play them. Clearly there are three artists
who have fallen victim more than any others to the Idol Irony factor.”

  • Anonymous

Exactly.  That’s the irony part.  As they said, the very show that catapulted their careers is then the cloud that hangs over their careers later.  Ironic.

  • Anonymous

I’m surprised too – it almost seems like they can get respect from everyone else BUT radio.  It’s such a shame.

Neither Daughtry nor Durbin, for that matter, were hamstrung by winning Idol, nor did either of them have to sing Time of My Life for a full year. Furthermore, neither were as closely managed in regard to output because of having to cater to the “perceived” idol voters who put them over the top. That is, the *perception of the audience* TPTB had based on stereotype rather than on who they really were.

I agree with you on that.  David probably had the worst of the stigma to overcome out of the three for sure.

Try this – it’s the (long) link for that particular article, thirdtime. Really nice words for Daughtry, Cook, and Durbin. Thanks for finding it for us.

Exactly! And may GOD bless your words for it’s the same as my prayers for ADAM! That with these Queen gigs, the world shall recognize and acknowledge ADAM’s GOD-given explosion of talents in this beautiful piece of creation.

Even though Daughtry and Durbin didn’t win, their debut albums were composed with their respected Idol fan bases in mind. I don’t know as much about Daughtry because I didn’t watch Idol back then, But James definitely had to make compromises even being signed to a rock label.

It’s naive to think WindUp didn’t cater to the diverse fan base James has with MOABD.
I’m sure James would have loved to go around promoting Outcast rather than Love Me Bad for example. lol

So yeah, he was hamstrung to a degree from producing the really heavier metal influenced music he wanted to do, who he really is, to cater somewhat to his perceived Idol voters.

I don’t agree with how he diminishes David by not recognizing what *extra* David had to deal with as the rocker who won. No way did Daughtry and Durbin have to deal with the same constraints from American Idol, as their representative for a year, and from the label’s end that David did. So, Cook is, therefore, the lesser rocker? Yeah, let’s see Durbin and Daughtry sing When You Wish Upon a Star for Disney and a coronation song, including putting it on their album.

Thanks for looking up the DI ‘scores’ for James, justme – I thought I remembered that James was always closer to the top than the bottom, but sometimes our ‘rememberer’ isn’t always the way we thought it was.   :)

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

Not a fan of James but out of the 3 Idols I think he would be more likely to make a bigger impact in the Rock world. 1. He didn’t win Idol. 2. He didn’t sign on to a major label and 3. His label doesn’t expect big sales that would be depended on radio play. Him hooking up with other rock bands and gigs can help expand his fanbase and have a comfortable career doing exactly what he wants. He just needs to form a real band and promoted as such because a solo artist does not make a rockstar. Daughtry has all the right ingredients except he’s sign to RCA who expects radio play and sales. If it wasn’t for that he can continue having a career on the fanbase he has and tour comfortable. Cook is a hard one. I think his whole career under RCA/19m has been mismanaged and him continuing under Fullers management isn’t going to change anything. I know his fans think Fuller is a saving grace but he’s better off cutting all Idol ties and start under a new management that will gear his career toward the rock world. If he can cut RCA loose the better. He has the name recognition albeit not huge but he should go the Durbin route.

Fans s.b. slapping “Likes” all over that article above–they don’t come out any nicer than that!  Appreciate it being brought here.  Hope you’re taking this one in James–just in case you need a well-deserved shot-in-the-arm of praise.

    and THIS:
    –  “Suffering from the same lack of airplay that James Durbin is suffering from”

folks outside the Idol bubble have noticed it too!  Not the music–but getting it played!!!!

    Reminder:

Ban hammer is coming out. I ALMOST banned someone who has been posting here for awhile. I may yet.

Just to have it acknowledged by this guy in this rock magazine that in his opinion the only thing keeping David, James & Chris away from rock super stardom is just their lack of airplay on rock radio is absolutely awesome.

As it turns out, I did ban someone. And I should have also banned all 11 people who liked the obnoxious and rude post I deleted.

Adding to discussions re. how important radio play is (even in James case some saying not the end of the world):  besides tv, I can’t imagine it not being excellent for their careers, awards, people hearing about albums, etc.  There are other ways to get it done but I doubt few if any could downplay being on radio playlists.  I did hear LMB being played on radio & when the dj starts or ends with (JD from Amer Idol)–that’s advertising at it’s finest directly to the target audience.  As we’ve been reading this is not a specific style of music–many are feeling it, not just from Rock.  Fans on facebook complain that stations won’t play their requests–they are willing but understandably they give up.  How do you get around this?–very frustrating.  I find it dishonest that any artist brings a personal interview & performance to a radio station & doesn’t get play in exchange, as some have suggested happens.

Nice comments about James and MOABD. I hope the reviewer does get to see him on May 17. You have to see him live to fully appreciate how good he is.

Been trying since Friday night to not have to hijack a topic to mention this — James was awesome opening for Buckcherry!!  That video someone posted of “Love in Ruins” from Corpus Christi?  Yeah he danced around with his tambourine for the entire song.  He can actually dance lol.

The new a cappella opening to “Higher Than Heaven” (singing the chorus) is awesome.

James’ set: Outcast, Deeper, Liberate, Stand Up, Love Me Bad, Rainbow in the Dark, Higher Than Heaven, Love in Ruins.

My brother came with me.  We had the same taste in music until 1983, when I went for Duran Duran and he suddenly liked Ratt, Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister.  He has not heard James’ album, but he liked the show.  He was very impressed with the cover of “Rainbow in the Dark.”  He says Ronnie James Dio is very hard to do, and James is one of the few singers he’s heard that can do him justice.

And the bad news… Pop’s wouldn’t let my camera in.  They said it has to be thin like a credit card or it’ll give the tour manager a heart attack.  Booooooooooooo!!!

    RE: Tony Awards

I see that Audra McDonald is up for a Tony again, this time for Best Actress in a Musical (Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess.)  If she wins, it will be her 5th Tony – putting her in the same elite group as Julie Harris and Angela Lansbury.

Fresno, CA girl – her father was my son’s HS principal, and what a proud papa he was!!  She comes “home” at least once a year and puts on a benefit concert for one of our local charities – and her shows ALWAYS sell out!

For all you Idol fans who have never heard of her (other than on Private Practice), take a look at some of her YouTube videos, from “Stars & Moon” to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” among others.  Incredibly talented lady!

  • shamrock

Great that you could see James live and enjoyed it (not that I really doubted the latter ;). I am just a *tiny* little bit envious. Pitty about the camera, but I am sure the memories will stay with you anyway, though I would have liked to see your videos.

And thanks for the article link, thirdtime. Interesting (and unfortunately confirming) read.

I believe James has enough stamina and work-ethic (the talent is a given for me) to go the hard and rocky road and slow road towards rock acceptance. I just hope Wind-Up has the same belief his fans have and is prepared to be in for the long haul.

That is an interesting article in the hollywood reporter that was posted regarding Christina Arguilera’s comments about Tony Lucca. People.com also did an article on Christina’s comments towards Tony. The comments there are not that supportive of Xtina.  http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20592107,00.html

  • justmefornow

Too bad about the camera :(

On the positive side, it’s sounds like it was a great set. I especially liked your comments about your brother liking the show and having not heard the album. This is James’ target audience now. Being exposed to new potential rock fans and winning them over, one show at a time.

And yes, James does an awesome cover of Dio, very hard to do.

  • mmb

Christian Borle is awesome.  So glad to see him have mainstream success and award nominations.  At this point, unfortunately, the only characters I’m interested in on Smash are Christian’s and Megan’s (sorry Kat, you’re doing a fine job, but the writers have created a drip of a character for you….)…and yes, Audra McDonald is an absolutely tremendous talent — she really can do it all, tv, broadway, film, concerts…

“His label doesn’t expect big sales that would be depended on radio play.”

The fact that his first single “Love Me Bad” was pushed to the POP/CHRformat means that Wind-Up cares about sales. James is not the kind of indie Rock musician who writes and produces his own songs. They’ve spent money on producers and songwriters for his album, so I’m sure that they want a good return on their investment.

  • Susan

Actually James co-wrote several songs on his first album and has been writing while he’s on tour.

That is some false information, man. On top 4 night performances May 11, 2011 registered 23.05 million viewers. Next week, top 3 night performances May 18, 2011 with 23.56 million viewers. And the finale, top 2 perform – 20.57 million viewers. Basically it went up half a million viewers after James left and went down almost 3 million after Haley left. Until the finale top 2 results, now that got 29.29 million viewers, with all the guest performers and other idols too, season’s highest of course.

  • justmefornow

If you check my post it was in reference to someone’s else posting about RESULT night ratings, not perfromance night ratings.

Check the ratings for those result nights top 4 compared to top 3.
    THAT’s what we were referencing.

  • justmefornow

Yes, and I can’t wait to hear what he and the band are working on!

Oh and Neo, James Durbin and James Michael wrote that Kick Ass song “Higher Than Heaven” in 6 hours!
    Not too shabby.

Of course they care about sales, but they don’t expect their rock artists to do as well as pop artists.  Besides, I think that Wind Up released the song to pop stations, because they hoped that James’ AI connection would get him more spins than the rest of the artists on their roster.  But, I think that saying that they promoted him to pop radio doesn’t tell us a lot about what they actually did. Besides digitally releasing the song to pop stations, which takes very little effort and money, did they send him to any pop stations, which takes a lot of money, or spend any time at all on the phones or in person trying to convince pop program directors to play his song?
